Re: [Audyssey] lunimals query

2011-11-30 Thread dark

Hi Josh.

On lunimals, can you say a bit more about where your stuck? I'm afraid I'm
afraid I can't remember mission two specifically, was that the one with the
huge mouse population? there's a very good walkthru by nocturnus, I suggest
having a listen to that if your stuck.

the link is in the documentation or on the Lunimals entry on audiogames.net.

As to dog who hates toast, well nobody said the game was easy :d.

If your stuck, you just need to start again and practice your memorization
skills, there's really no other way around I'm afraid.

I must admit, it took me a few goes to finish the game as well.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Hi,

Just got another bug to report.

I was on the outside of the safe zone. On the north side by the west corner.
I pressed my left mouse button and it said I could not attack in safe zone.
I had to side step a couple of ticks in order to fire.

As long as I am in the zone I never use my kit, but once outside
ofcause its normal.

I am not sure if I get the health boost or not but assume this does happen to.

Re: [Audyssey] The app is finally here!

2011-11-30 Thread Matheus Rheine
hi michael, wow man, this app is just amazing, all these classic beeps,
and all the games we can now play on the go. i think that the ios
devices still need many many more games for the blind, i know,it's easy
to say and not do anything, but i'm not a programmer, and now considering
that there are 6 games in the pack, even including monopoly! and all for
free, this is just unbelievable, it made my day.
so far i just played casino, i have some suggestions to the screen
layout, for example, when it asks for the bets,it could switch you
automaticaly to the numbers and instead of having all these simbols it
could display only the 9 numbers, for example similar to when you're
making a call, and then show the delete/confirm option at the bottom
right corner of the screen,i don't know if it's possible though, because
i know that it just simulates the dos prompts,it's not a big problem.
later on i'll play some of the other games, and if i have any other
suggestions i'll tell you here.
thanks again.

Hey, Everybody.
The app is in the app store and the great thing about the app IT IS FREE!
The name of the app is call De Steno Games and here is the description
of the app.
This app has six classic text games with sounds and music, and it is
fully accessible with Voice Over. The six games were originally
developed by Richard L. De Steno, and were very popular with people who
were blind or had low vision back in the 90's. A blind person would use
a screen reader, which is a piece of software that allowed a person who
was blind or had low vision to play these games just like a sighted
person. Here is a description of the six games.

1. Atlantic City Blackjack: This game of blackjack is played by the
rules set by the NJ Casino Commission.

2: Casino: This game has a selection of four games which are blackjack,
slot machine, flash poker, and minibaccart.

3. Dodge City Desperados: You are the sheriff of the wild west town of
Dodge City. Your mission, take out the Desperado Brothers before they
take you out.

4. Destination Mars: In this game you will be taking a 35 million mile
trip from the Earth to Mars, but it won't be easy. You will encounter
different obstacles on this journey. Good luck space pilot

5. Run for President: Ever wanted to be president? Well, in this game
you are a candidate running around the United States on a Monopoly
style board in a bid to beat the computer and become president of the
United States of America.

6. Sounds Like: In this word game, you must try to figure out the
hidden word from the clues that are given.

Notes:

- Turn on Voice Over before playing the games. It will read the screen
changes automatically.

- This app was put together by the following people: Michael Barnes,
Chaoji Li, Richard L. De Steno, Jeffrey Dawson.
So go get it and have fun!

[Audyssey] Asighted developer makes a different for blind gamers.

2011-11-30 Thread michael barnes

Hello.
Here is a artical that I got off the webpage of www.litchie.com
That displays how we as blind gamers can work beside sighted developers
to make a different for all gamers.

So here is the artical below.

I didn’t realize that a blind person can enjoy iPhone as much as
sighted people. Then our world crossed when Michael Barnes came forward
and proposed an app idea to port some classic text games on iPhone. We
talked and I listened to him using his iPhone with Voice Over. I never
used this feature before, and suddenly I think it is the best feature
on the phone.

iOS SDK doesn’t provide direct Text-To-Speech APIs, it was a bit of
challenge using only the UIKit accessibility functions. I also tried to
use a free TTS engine, but was unable to make it sound better than the
built-in one. After some investigation, I figured out a way (or a hack,
worked well most of the time) to use Voice Over to speak out text
changes on the screen automatically, and I thought it is fairly usable
for text games.

The app is a game pack of six classic games developed by Richard L. De
Steno. A detailed list is put on the App Store description page. I
never played these games before, but Michael had fond memories of them.

Hey, Matheus.
No I'm afraid that the developer can not make the keyboard work like that.
That was one of the things we tried to do doing the beta testing.
However if you have a blue tooth keyboard you can use it with the app.
Let me share the key features.
The app has blue tooth keyboard and if you got to exit the app for
whatever reason it pauses until you return to the app.

Thanks for your ideas.

The game I have been trying to play is the destination mars game, and I

Hey, alex.
What you should have on the screen if you are not using a blue tooth
keyboard, is a on screen keyboard.

When the game start that you want to play it will ask if you want instructions?
You then select y or n on the on screen keyboard or if using a blue
tooth keyboard press one of those letters.

I hope that helps you out.

When we get done with this then I'll talk to him about putting the two

No I don't have a problem with you sending message after message about the app.
After all that is what the list is for.
The trilogy that we are going to start on will hopefully be out in

The three games are classic apple II and dos games.
The games can be played by both sighted and blind people alike.
I will share more information about it when it gets close to release.

Hi,
thanks for your reply, I actually didn't see any dialogue asking if I
wanted instructions when I first ran the game, but that was because I
was two impatient when the copyright notice came up.
I am using a bluetooth keyboard, I hate the iPhone virtual keyboard with
a passion, the only time I sometimes use it is when entering passwords
as then I can be certain I am selecting the right letter.

But normally I only use a bluetooth keyboard.
I ran the app again, and was able to get the game started this time.
I had a thought, obviously you have to respect the authors original
copyright, but due to the limited screen space on the iPhone, perhaps
you could put the copyright stuff under a separate button, called
copyright information or something.
Besides, lets face it the games are so old, I doubt the author really
cares what happens to them now, and I guess he must be amazed people
still play them.
How many people have downloaded the app so far? I know the itunes store
does keep track of numbers of downloads, but I have never scene this
statistic on any app pages I have viewed in the app store.

of course we shouldn't expect lots of games to now suddenly be ported to
the iPhone, I doubt the developer who ported the 6 games we currently
have will

port every possible game under the sun.

Speaking for myself, one game I would really like the ability to play on
the iPhone is called humbug, its interactive fiction, but unusually the
guy who

wrote it didn't use a standard IF language, I think he wrote it in pascal.
In fact he wrote several games, which he has now made freeware, though I
don't think he released the source code to any of them.
Jackaranda jim was also another funny one he did, though I was never
able to beat that one.

Humbug was cool because of the way all the puzzles were interconnected.
Of course I can't use any of his games under windows 7 because it won't
run 16 bit applications, but I have an old dos pc which I keep just for
old games,

its about 15 years old and still in full working order.
To be honest I probably wouldn't play old dos style games that much, but
they would be cool to have around for long car or train journeys.

the games are simple enough. Later down the road there could be
potential for gamecenter integration for stuff like scoreboards for

Please write a review in the app store so that me and the developer and

   Hi Michael,

first of all, you don't find the app in the appstore by searching for
call de steno games, just search steno games or you won't find it, it's
called de steno games in the appstore.

I already installed it and took a short look at it and it seems to be a
good adaption of the games for the iphone. It's just a bit weired to
read things like press escape in the instructions, maybe it would have
been better to adapt the instructions for the iphone version as well.
But apart from that it works great and seems to run without problems
here.

Best regards
Sarah

2011-11-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

That's a good question. There is one Dos game I use to play a lot
called 688 where you were a submarine commander in command of a 688
Los Angelis-class attack submarine. Another game I played a lot was
Elite which was discussed already on list. More recently I've gotten
into the Dos wrestling sims like Piledriver and Wrestling League
Manager. I'm sure there are plenty of other Dos games I could think of
given enough time, but copyrights and things like that would be a big
issue.

Cheers!

of course we shouldn't expect lots of games to now suddenly be ported to

port every possible game under the sun.

Speaking for myself, one game I would really like the ability to play on

Humbug was cool because of the way all the puzzles were interconnected.
Of course I can't use any of his games under windows 7 because it won't
run 16 bit applications, but I have an old dos pc which I keep just for
 old games,
its about 15 years old and still in full working order.
To be honest I probably wouldn't play old dos style games that much, but
they would be cool to have around for long car or train journeys.

I'll work on fixing those problems as soon as I can. I ended up being asked to
work a double shift last night, and again today. That has kept me away from
the house for so long that I am just now even turning on my laptop in over 24
hours! If people don't hear much from me in the next few days, that will be
the reason.

yay jeremy for giving us a key
 config, you rock.
i have changed a few of the keys, such as making q
and e rotate 45 west and east, but when i tried assigning
the w key to move forward, it fires my gun when i hit w
instead, seems like the tail is wagging the dog with the
 mouse commands maybe.
i tried a few different ways, such as assigning
mouse 2 and so forth,  looks like the code is confusing
mouse 1 and 2 somewhere, and the game confuses w as a
incorrect mouse button command when its changed
 perhaps,  its odd.
also, according to the default config file, mouse 1 is
right mouse button and mouse 2 is left, is that right?
usually, its the other way around i thought.
finally,  there is a typo, it says hunging
rifle instead of hunting rifle, not sure if that matters or
 not.
good job man, games getting more enjoyable every
 update.

[Audyssey] Swamp: a couple of insects crawling around the game

When a zombie dies near you but you aren't the killer, the zombie splat
sound doesn't happen, the zombie just disappears. It's a bit disconcerting.

Also, people are reporting that donating guns doesn't return the expected

correctly every time.

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp: a couple of insects crawling around the game

2011-11-30 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Jeremy,
When I worked on Tank Commander, we played a looping tank tread sound for a
tank object as it was moving or stationary.
When you hit the tank the tread sound was removed and replaced by an
explosion that only played once.
Then if the tank was still living, we removed the explosion sound and
brought back the tread sound.
If the tank was dead we replaced the explosion with a looping burning tank
sound that had a timer attached.
Once the timer ran out, maybe in ten minutes, the burning sound was replaced
with a smaller explosion sound that represented the ammo blowing the tank to
bits.

After that sound was played, we removed the tank as an obstacle.
All of the sounds were mono files so the sounds would play in the same
coordinates as the tank.
With zombies, you could go from walking and moaning sounds to a body being
hit and cry sounds, to a body falling and if the zombie had any equipment a
metal falling sound.
Then blood gushing from wounds for a few minutes while flies discovered the
dead zombie.

Then the current looping flies could be used to find the body.
When you get into range of the dead body you could play your foot hitting
something then the description of what you found on the dead zombie.

You could have a rustling sound of you going through the pockets.
During this time maybe the flies would be scared away. Once you get the ammo
or guns the flies would come back.

And then their sound would fade out as they finished their feeding.

Hi all.

This will not be helpful on the iphone list however I'd also like to see some
more games done for the Android platform. We have Stemstumper on there but
that's pretty much it so far as I know. There are probably some interpreters
for some of the text games out there but I have not really looked into this,
I've not really been into text games much these days.

Game on.

2011-11-30 Thread Kelvin Tan
hi jeremy. when i donate more than 1 item 1 after another, the rep points
tends to mix up. i donated a m60 it gave me the rep points that i was
supposed to get, but right after that, when i donated shot gun shells, mthe
game tells me my rep has increased to ---, but in actual fact, it has
actually decreased to my original amount. lost quite a number of rep points
because of testing that. lol it hurts!

Subject: [Audyssey] Swamp, version 1.6b update

I've posted version 1.6b. I'm super short on time so I won't spend a lot of
time explaining it here.
The full download link is ready, but if you already have version 1.5b then
there's no need to waste time downloading the larger file anyway. Just
download this small patch file and you will be updated to version 1.6b.
www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/SwampPatch.zip

Changes from version 1.5b to 1.6b
-

- Put the code back in that prevents guns from being fired in the safe zone.
- Finally went through and recoded the graphics. They no longer bog down
the slower computer systems.
- I've done some optimization to various parts of the code to speed up
zombie calculations. This should also help with game performance.
- Killing stronger zombies now gives more experience.
- Killing zombies with weaker weapons raises your reputation slightly faster
than if you use stronger weapons.
- Phantom zombie and loot sounds should be fixed now. The buffer wasn't
always being properly cleared if another player grabbed the loot or killed
the zombie.
- The server has been adjusted to better handle player positioning. This
should improve hearing eachother's weapons, voices, and foot steps.
- Corrected a code mix up that was causing the garbage network traffic which
was discovered in the past version.
- The bug is fixed that let people donate a gun to the Safe zone but then
still use it.
- I've added a few new features to the server that help me monitor the
players. This is mostly for my own entertainment though.
- Fixed a bug that prevented page up and page down from being used as an
alternative to cycling through online messages.
- Added a keyconfig.ini file which allows players to customize their
controls. If you ever mess up the file, just delete it and the game will
create a new one next time you play. Because this config file would allow
some to play using only the keyboard, please respect that the game is meant
to be played with the mouse. What I mean by this is that if you are playing
the game with only a keyboard, don't post suggestions or comments about the
game being too difficult. I have absolutely no intention of lowering the
difficulty of the game to accomodate the restricted movement and aiming of
the keyboard. My apologies if this sounds harsh.
- The grown rate for zombies has been increased by 20%.
- Increased the server's drop rate for med kits.
- Fixed a few small bugs related to the guard and how his voice was
transmitted.
- I think I've fixed a bug that would cause people to have enough xp but not
level up.
- Pressing Alt + / now toggles your radio settings. You can use these 3
modes to change how incoming multiplayer chat is presented.
- Fixed the bug that caused online chat messages to be played twice.
- Replaced the leveling up sound with the one Kai had given me a while ago
but I forgot to put it in. Lol, oops.
- Shortened the message that's read when you go to type a multiplayer chat
message. It was quite long.

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp: a couple of insects crawling around the game

2011-11-30 Thread Richard Sherman
Hi,

Currently my only pet peeve is when sounds bleed thru and don't stop.

For instance. I went east to the river. When I left, I could still hear the
river sound. Then as I went behind the k mart, I picked up a fly sound that
too did not go away. On to the gas station where I picked up the dingging
sound that is there, and that too didn't go away. None of the sounds stopped
until I left the game and restarted. I can manage with the river and
dingging, but the fly sound that didn't go away kept me from noticing other
flies.

As for the purchasing and donating bug, I haven't run across it yet. Someone
said it mainly affects armor and not ammo.

Don't know if this would fall in to this category, but I used to play two
games on Bulletin Board systems. They were Trade Wars and another one which
slips my mind. These were multi-player games and you were allowed 60 minutes
per day to play. You could go to other galaxies and destroy or plunder
planets or develop your own planets moving items from place to place to
develop planets and your fleet of fighters. They were much fun. I miss them
very much.
If anyone remembers these games and can suggest an alternative I would be
very happy.

Thanks in advance.

Hi list, I just sent this message to the viphone list without thinking,
grr I hate it when I do things like that, I just filled in the address
 on autopilot without thinking.

just thought I would throw this question out there to see what sort of
 replies come in,
what other old dos games would people like to see ported to the iPhone?
of course we shouldn't expect lots of games to now suddenly be ported to
the iPhone, I doubt the developer who ported the 6 games we currently
 have will
port every possible game under the sun.

Re: [Audyssey] what other old dos games would people like to seeported to the iPhone

2011-11-30 Thread michael barnes

Yes that is correct about the copyrights law.
However if the app was a free app then there wouldn't be any kind of problems.
I have done my homework on this.
The one thing that my developer ask is about me getting the promission
to put these games out as freeware.
However if the person or people who made the game tells me that he can
sell the app then he will sale the app.
With the way that bavisoft is about not contacting people I would
release the app with those two games for free to be on the safe side.

Thanks for your concerns and thoughts.
