wow the optagon now that is something I haven't used in a long time. yup books, news paper articles, and print documents are what you can read with that machine, if you could handle all that vibration on your finger lol. The optacon, if I spell it right, is a device used in the old days to read something. I'm not sure what you can read with the optacon. If I'm not mistaken, I think you can put a sighted document such as a book into it and then it will write the letters on your hand palm so you put your hand inside it then it will write the letters on your hand palm .You will not have sighted writing on your hand, it just makes the pattorns on your hand. You need to know how each sighted letter looks like in order to use this machine. I do not know if it is still used today. Re: [Audyssey] New accessible train simulator in development
hello, I was wondering about the ms train and fs 2004 are they both free? and if so where can I get them as a website or if they do cost roughly how much? thanks Sal - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Friday, August 14, 2009 10:58 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] New accessible train simulator in development Hi, Well, if their train simulator is anything like Microsoft Train Simulator there is a whole lot more to it then just inputting two locations and letting the train go. In MS Train Simulator you have a variety of trains to choose from. You can pick anything from a classic steam engine to a state-of-the-art electric powered engine. Each train is unique to drive, and you have to train with the simulator a while before you get the hang of driving that particular train. Then, you have to select a route. Once you have selected/filed the route to drive you need to drive the route. I've not had much experience with Train Simulator, but I know it can get pretty involved in driving the routes. For example, you pretty much have to get a feel for when you should begin slowing down for a curve in the track, when taking a train bridge, or when passing through a town. If you have your realism settings turned on the last thing you want to do is take a curve at maximum speed. That is an accident waiting to happen. If you are taking a long hill you will want to throddle down to 0 in order to let the train coast thus saving steam/fuel on the descent. As I mentioned the other day there are things you can do such as on steam trains you can have the computer fireman manage your coal, fire box, etc for you. You can turn the computer fireman off and handle the job as fireman as well as drive the train. There are some advantages in manually being your own fireman such as if you are good at it you can operate the train at peak efficiency. Of course if you take over the job as fireman you need to be able to tell the difference in the smoke and find out if you have a full head of steam or you have too much or too little coal in the fire box. Another thing about MS Train Simulator is they use the actual train wistle codes. A lot of people think that the engineer blows the wistle for fun. Not true. The train wistle is used for a variety of signals and messages that you should learn when playing Train Simulator. Nick Helms wrote: Same here Is this a train simulator that you are developing, or did Harren find it? Also, forgive me, but what exactly do you do in a train simulator. Do you just imput two stations and hit ok and watch your train move between them? No afence, but what exactly does it involve? ? The order is tennis on top, then bowling, then baseball, then golf and finally boxing at the bottom--or if you want boxing, up one, golf, up two and so on. In baseball--the game, not the training, you'll need to turn the sound up a bit. You'll hear two vooming sounds when you're the batter. Swing about a third of a second after the second zoom starts--varies according to pitch speed and there is no indication of that based on sound but you can still kick most sighted tail if you practice. To throw pitches, do a throwing motion for fast pitches or hold down a, b, or both to varry the throw. HTH Do you live near Sandusky Ohio, or are you planning a trip to Cedar Point? As far as accessibility most games have some barriers for us blind gamers, but I do play some fighting games on ps3 a lot, and gotten pretty good at it. The hard part in video games is to always memorize the menu set ups and stuff when there is no audible feedback to let you know where you are at. thanks for the help yeah looks like that is the thing on here also it dinged at me and that was about it. thanks again for the help Sal - Original Message - From: ChB chr1...@gmx.de To: 'Gamers Discussion list' gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, August 13, 2009 1:01 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Nintendo wii and intro The wii should be connected to the tv and then of course the ac adapter for electricity your wall outlet for power. At least this is the way my ps3 works. After that you have to find the right av channel on your remote control also. Then you will get a set up screen where you will need some sighted help to adjust certain things like date, time, resolution etc. after that you will always get some kind of welcome screen. I don't know if wii plays a jingle or not. Ps3 does not but I can always tell once the hard drive inside starts spinning that it is getting ready to start. chrissy -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of sal Sent: Thursday, August 13, 2009 9:32 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Nintendo wii and intro Hello I am wondering about the connection of the wires I am connecting the wii to my cable box and have it powered on with the sports cd inside does it make any musical sounds? or am I going to have to put in a music cd to see if it plays anything so I can figure out with wire is what thanks - Original Message - From: ChB chr1...@gmx.de To: 'Gamers Discussion list' gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, August 13, 2009 5:16 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Nintendo wii and intro I think all the aforementioned consoles have something good to offer. Wii is more family oriented in their games while playstation consoles are traditionally more 'hardcore' gamer oriented, with more shooters and racing games available. Each has good games, so it is primarily a matter of what type of games appeal more to the potential buyer. As far as accessibility most games have some barriers for us blind gamers, but I do play some fighting games on ps3 a lot, and gotten pretty good at it. The hard part in video games is to always memorize the menu set ups and stuff when there is no audible feedback to let you know where you are at. When I play ps3 I usually have some sighted person play me and they set up the game and stuff. chrissy --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. that's cool, yeah I find myself doing the same thing the ps 3 will be next on my list have fam that has it its a great system I love playing the fighting games, gta, and the skater games along with that gta like one in los angeles and woriors is really cool also but yeah as always its a tricky thing at first but once its up and going its no problem used to handle the atorry, classic nintendo and saga back in the day so should be pretty easy once its ready to play thanks again for the help. It is really tricky because if you have no clue what is going on it is next to impossible to fully get oriented, as usually all set ups required to get into the games will have no really audible feedback to let you know what choices you made. Most times it is just sounds. One of the fighting games for ps3 gives you the name of the characters when you choose them, as they all have different weaknesses and strenghts. I end up playing the same character now always as I was able to figure out some good working combos for him. So maybe if you can get someone to first explain what is going on on the screen, it is a lot easier to try and memorize the layouts for each game. It would be awesome if someone would come up with some sort of jaws like screenreader that you could integrate into consoles. But I guess the market would be too small and such a reader would cost way too much. But it would be cool to see if more blind gamers would then try out and enjoy some mainstream videogames. I also have a psp with tekken and stuff to play on it. Re: [Audyssey] nentendo wii and intro
oh for sure I like them both for their own ovious reasons. have not tried the x box or game cube but yes I do like the wii's aproach to the family type setting great for a friday night will have to go on nintendo's site to see what selection of games they have haha its a trip though how I have heard that some folks actually lost weight from playing wii and also how the strap helps out cause of people getting knocked out from their drunk buddies playing and forgetting to put the strap on. ah well it happens I guess lol Sal - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, August 13, 2009 3:58 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] nentendo wii and intro Hi Shaun, I don't think it is a matter of good or bad, but it comes down to personal preference here. The WII is intended to be a family oriented console rather than for hard core gamers. That's the reason why the WII doesn't feature games like MK VS DC, Tomb Raider Underworld, and various other games you see on the PS 3 and XBox 360. If the WII games appear to be lame it is because of Nentendo's new family oriented approach to gaming. All of the WII games I know of have an E rating and you don't see a lot of M rated games like you see on XBox and PS 2 and PS 3. So it is like comparing a G rated movie with one rated R. Good or bad is in the eyes of the beholder, and is subjective here. shaun everiss wrote: aggreed man. Hello my name is Sal. I am glad to be on this list and look forward in meeting you all. I was wondering about the wii, I just received one today and have checked out some of the archives on this list and the podcast on be c t. I was wondering if the setting up of the wii out of the box is possible for some one that is blind or is sighted help needed the instructions seem pretty good on the Nintendo site but just curious on some more tips. also besides the sports game what other games are as accessible in playing? has any one played the resort game, and does the wii have that game like ps 3 with the taking of cars and shooting people in the streets of new York? thanks for the help Sal --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. of course I understand what your saying, especially with lonewolf even though their are so many different levels you still switch up after a wile. sal - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Charles Rivard woofer...@sbcglobal.net; Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Tuesday, August 11, 2009 1:38 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] game cycle? Hi Charles, As a matter of fact that's almost exactly how I am. I'll play something like SoundRTS for a week or two, get burned out, play Chess or Uno, get burned out, and play something else. Eventually, the cycle will start over. It is actually difficult for a game to keep my attention for very long. Take Sryth for example. While I truely enjoy the game I go through spells where I play it almost every day, and then there will be a spell where I don't do anything with my character for a month. Then, one weekend I'll find myself board, login, and play actively for a week or so before growing board with it again. This so-called cycle is what makes it hard for me to complete a game like Jim's NFL Football game. I'll start out a season make it through 6 or 10 games and get board off my rear. Perhaps a month later I'll start playing and resume the season again losing my momentum and drive to make it to the Super Bowl. I've litterally had a game of football last a year before i made it to the Super Bowl, because even though I like the game it can't keep my attention for very long. I'll play a couple of games and not pick it up again for weeks . Although, I am pretty sure why this happens. The bottom line is there aren't very many accessible games that truly satisfies me. Before I lost my vision I was into games like Tomb Raider, Jedi Knight, the original Heroes Might and Magic, Mech Warrior, and various other games that were out in the mid 1990's. There are very few accessible games that really compare. Shades of Doom and GMA Tank Commander are the closest I can think of which is why I purchased both as soon as I could. I don't personally get the same entertainment or satisfaction out of playing Uno, Hearts, Aliens in the Outback, etc. The games are good in their own way, but not my cup of tea. Smile. Charles Rivard wrote: Just curious if anyone else finds themselves doing this: You are in the mood to play a particular game. You haven't played it in a while, and you get caught up in it. You play the heck out of that game, but none other. After a time, you decide to play another game. You haven't played that one for a while, and you get caught up in it, ignoring all other games on your PC.
