Re: [Audyssey] Game Help

2012-04-04 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi,

Sorry, but I am just totally stumped. The sapi speech is working as are the
arrow keys and the enter key with the VB6 input, but not with the DirectX
input. I can only get it to act like that using the enter key on the num pad,
but you said that your friend is using the enter key by the letters. I am just
stumped.

Sorry about that.

Hi Jim,

For what its worth I am just as stumped. I've got a laptop here with an
up to date copy of Windows 7 64-bit and I'm not experiencing this issue.
I've also tried them with the Windows 8 consumer beta, and its not a
problem. Plus every idea I can think of just seems to not to have any
effect on the issue.

Hey Mama Peach and all

I think I recall what the issue might be your friend is having. Since
Jim's games automatically extract themselves to the winkit folder when
installed, I believe they extract to the program files folder as opposed
to
the programx86 folder where the main Kitchen's in should be. I just
remembered someone else having a similar issue. All that needs done is to
just copy the game files into the other folder.

Hi,

Hmmm...It shouldn't matter If he quits Jaws before or after the game
starts. Once Jaws is unloaded it frees up the keyboard hooks it uses to
monitor keyboard input and DirectInput can acquire full control of the
keyboard. Although, it might be worth a try to test this just to be
sure. However, I don't really see this making any difference.

Hi,

Ok, since the arrow keys are working, it is definitely not the Jaws thing.
How about, in many of my games you must use the enter key next to the
letters, not the enter key on the number pad. Both will work in my game
menu program and some of the games but not others.

I hope that might help.

He clicks on Kitchens Inc on his desktop. The game loads just fine. He is
able to arrow through the different games. He lands on say Spanker. He is
able to click on that. Now when he arrows through these options, start
game, change voice, change volume, etc., he can't click on anything, not
even exit. So he tries to get out of this, but with no luck. He can't hit
escape or alt f4, it just seems to have locked up his machine. He has to
reboot his machine in order to make it go away. On River Raiders, he can
load the game, arrow through the menu options but he cannot click on
anything. He can hit the escape key and the game shuts down just fine.

Hi,

Hmmm...It shouldn't matter If he quits Jaws before or after the
game
starts. Once Jaws is unloaded it frees up the keyboard hooks it
uses to
monitor keyboard input and DirectInput can acquire full control
of the
keyboard. Although, it might be worth a try to test this just to
be

sure. However, I don't really see this making any difference.

Unfortunately, that won't work as Jim's games are set up to allow
very easy management. If the application for the game isn't in
the folder with the winkit files, it won't show up on the list of
games to play.

Hey Mama Peach and all

I think I recall what the issue might be your friend is having.
Since
Jim's games automatically extract themselves to the winkit folder
when
installed, I believe they extract to the program files folder as
opposed to
the programx86 folder where the main Kitchen's in should be. I
just
remembered someone else having a similar issue. All that needs
done is to

just copy the game files into the other folder.

Yep, that is where I had him install them to. Here is what happened when
he tries to play.
Same thing on Top Speed 3.

The kitchenSink games need to be installed under program files (x86) since
that's the sort of backward compatibility installation path for windows7

Me either. It makes no sense. I noticed something when we were looking
around on his machine which is weird to me because my machine doesn't
show this. When I had him go into the C drive to find program files, he
has three program files folders, one is just program files, one is
program files 86 and the other is program files X86. I only have program
files and program files X86. Why would his have three and would this

Hi,

Weather the game is installed or not probably doesn't have anything to
do with it. Keep in mind the RS Client and Quentin's Playroom are not
written in Visual Basic. I think whatever is wrong with your friend's

Hi,

No, that wouldn't be an issue here. Windows 7 comes with the latest
version of directX 8, and when Winkit is installed it adds the proper

He has turned his UAC off so I was told that should work. The games install
fine. He doesn't get an error, just can't click on any menu options in Jim
Kitchens Games, Top Speed 3 or River Raiders. He can play some games that
are ones that do not require an install but those that we have installed so
far, he can't go past the menu options because he cannot hit his enter key
with any results. The game just sits there..

Hi there.

The person who is having trouble starting those two games might try running
them as administrator. Hit the context key on the menu item that you would
normally press enter on to launch the game and arrow down to run as
administrator. Are they getting an error message?

On Mar 31, 2012, at 9:40 PM, Phil Vlasak wrote:

Hi,
It could be that those games were written in a language that isn't
supported by windows anymore such as Visual basic 6.
Some game companies have added vb6 libraries to their game installations
that fix that problem.
If you downloaded and installed Shades of Doom or Jim Kitchen's WinKit,
then you have those vb6 libraries and those games will work.
Another hint is to install the games as an administrator instead of just
install them.

When you installed the games did you choose install as administrator?
This choice is found by using the context menu key, which is to the right
of the space bar between the alt and control keys.

The same thing happens, not able to click on menu options. I just don't

Hello,

This may sound stupid, but does this fellow person you are talking about
have something in his system which can block any attempts to access the
games? It is the only thing I could think of right now, because I have not
got any issues on running games in windows seven.
Best,
Muhammed.

Yep, that is where I had him install them to. Here is what happened when
he tries to play.
Same thing on Top Speed 3.

The kitchenSink games need to be installed under program files (x86) since
that's the sort of backward compatibility installation path for windows7
etc.

Hi,

It might be a problem. By default Windows 7 comes with Program files,
where 64-bit apps goes, and Program Files (x86), where 32-bit apps goes,
and the other directory shouldn't exist. I recommend he check what was
installed to Program Files (86), and then try and install them to the

The only thing that springs to mind immediately is that Jaws or
another screen-reader might be interfering. If your friend can put the
screen-reader to sleep or just unload it while he plays, that would
likely do the trick. Just be certain that you make hotkeys that are
easy to remember for loading the game once you quit the screen-reader.
Most screen readers make a hotkey such as control-alt-n for loading
NVDA as an example. Hope that helps.

He has unloaded Jaws, which is the only screenreader he uses, and he is
still not able to click on menu options in the games so I can't see that it
is Jaws causing this problem.

Hi,

It might be a problem. By default Windows 7 comes with Program files,
where 64-bit apps goes, and Program Files (x86), where 32-bit apps goes,
and the other directory shouldn't exist. I recommend he check what was
installed to Program Files (86), and then try and install them to the
proper location. In 90% of the cases most apps should go in c:\Program
Files (x86).

has three program files folders, one is just program files, one is
program files 86 and the other is program files X86. I only have program
files and program files X86. Why would his have three and would this
matter in any way?

That is, in a word, bizarre. I've never encountered that problem on any

Linux computers using Wine, the Windows emulator, without experiencing
that issue.

Hi,

Hmmm...It shouldn't matter If he quits Jaws before or after the game

monitor keyboard input and DirectInput can acquire full control of the

sure. However, I don't really see this making any difference.

Hey Mama Peach and all

I think I recall what the issue might be your friend is having. Since
Jim's games automatically extract themselves to the winkit folder when
installed, I believe they extract to the program files folder as opposed to
the programx86 folder where the main Kitchen's in should be. I just
remembered someone else having a similar issue. All that needs done is to
just copy the game files into the other folder.

Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please

2012-04-02 Thread Desiree Oudinot
Hi,
The only explanation I can come up with that hasn't been mentioned on
this thread so far would be to make sure an antivirus program or
firewall isn't blocking the game. I don't see why it would try to
block the Kitchensinc games, since none of them connect to the
internet, but Top Speed will almost certainly make your firewall pop
up a few times. You just have to click on the allow button and it
should work after that. A hotkey for jaws would be useful for figuring
out if this is the problem. Then your friend can load Jaws and see if
a window from his firewall or antivirus is there. If the music is too
loud, he can go into the volume control and turn down the volume for
the application. It's probably not his computer that's frozen,
probably just the game, and after he figures out whether this is the
problem, he can either click on the appropriate button to run it
properly or simply go into task manager by hitting control shift
escape and killing the program that way, saving him from having to do
a reboot.
Hth,
Desiree

Hi,

Ok, since the arrow keys are working, it is definitely not the Jaws thing. How
about, in many of my games you must use the enter key next to the letters, not
the enter key on the number pad. Both will work in my game menu program and

Hi,
It could be that those games were written in a language that isn't
supported

by windows anymore such as Visual basic 6.
Some game companies have added vb6 libraries to their game installations
that fix that problem.
If you downloaded and installed Shades of Doom or Jim Kitchen's WinKit,
then

you have those vb6 libraries and those games will work.
Another hint is to install the games as an administrator instead of just
install them.
When you installed the games did you choose install as administrator?
This choice is found by using the context menu key, which is to the right
of

the space bar between the alt and control keys.

Some game companies have added vb6 libraries to their game installations

If you downloaded and installed Shades of Doom or Jim Kitchen's WinKit,

Another hint is to install the games as an administrator instead of just

Hi Gamers,
A friend of mine is having a problem with a couple of games. We both have
installed the two games, River Raiders and Top Speed 3. I am able to use
the
games just fine. He, on the other hand, for some crazy reason, can't
click

on a menu option to start the games or anything. Any idea why this is
happening to him. We both are running Windows 7, 64 bit machines. Like I
said, both games work perfectly for me, but he can't even get past the
main

menus on either game. Please, any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Yes. One of the easiest ways to get all or most of the Visual Basic
dependencies is to install Jim Kitchen's Winkit. So if you have
installed Winkit and he hasn't that would explain why you have most of
the dependencies and why he does not.

opens Kitchens Inc Games, he can click on a game but he cannot click on any
of the options inside of the game such as start game, change volume, change

exit the game and he cannot hit alt f4 to close it either. He has to reboot
his system to get it to go away. And the same thing on River Raiders, he
cannot click on any menu options. I am so lost as to what to tell him. It is

Ouch! That blows my theory out of the water.
Apparently Michael had the same thought. I haven't a clue what to try
next.

[Audyssey] Game Help, Please

2012-03-31 Thread MamaPeach

Hi Gamers,
A friend of mine is having a problem with a couple of games. We both have
installed the two games, River Raiders and Top Speed 3. I am able to use the
games just fine. He, on the other hand, for some crazy reason, can't click
on a menu option to start the games or anything. Any idea why this is
happening to him. We both are running Windows 7, 64 bit machines. Like I
said, both games work perfectly for me, but he can't even get past the main
menus on either game. Please, any help would be appreciated.

Sometimes I have had this problem. I would restart my PC and then things
would work. So I guess it refreshes the ram enough to play the games.

Hi,
It could be that those games were written in a language that isn't supported
by windows anymore such as Visual basic 6.
Some game companies have added vb6 libraries to their game installations
that fix that problem.
If you downloaded and installed Shades of Doom or Jim Kitchen's WinKit, then
you have those vb6 libraries and those games will work.
Another hint is to install the games as an administrator instead of just
install them.

When you installed the games did you choose install as administrator?
This choice is found by using the context menu key, which is to the right of
the space bar between the alt and control keys.

Hi,

Does he have all the required dependencies. By that I'm specifically
asking if he has installed the Visual Basic 6 and DirectXS 8 legacy
runtime libraries. If not that would be a good reason to fail. As as
Windows Vista Visual Basic 6 support libraries do not ship with newer
Microsoft Windows products and must be installed manually.

Cheers!

Hi,

Not necessarily. While Windows 7 comes with most of the DirectX 8
libraries the file dx8vb.dll was removed from DirectX quite some time
ago and does not ship with Windoews Vista, Windows 7,or Windows 8. So
confirming he has installed and registered that library manually would
go a long way to seeing if he has a compatible version of DirectX.

Hi,

That's not stupid at all. As long as you install from the primary
account and if UAC is disabled then you are running as an administrator.
You only have to use the Run as Administrator option if UAC is enabled
or you are attempting to install something from a standard account.

have obviously just picked up the necessary things by installing games
because I know nothing about getting these things or even how to help him go

what is needed to play some of the other games that are out there, such as
the things you mentioned, if he just installed the game?

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please

Cheers!

Hi Gamers,
A friend of mine is having a problem with a couple of games. We both have
installed the two games, River Raiders and Top Speed 3. I am able to use
the games just fine. He, on the other hand, for some crazy reason, can't
click on a menu option to start the games or anything. Any idea why this
is happening to him. We both are running Windows 7, 64 bit machines. Like
I said, both games work perfectly for me, but he can't even get past the
main menus on either game. Please, any help would be appreciated.

[Audyssey] Game help with AudiOdyssey.

2012-03-11 Thread michael barnes

Hey the other night I downloaded AudiOdyssey from www.gambit.mit.edu.
It said that I could use a Wii remote to play the game instead of just
using the arrow keys on the keyboard, however the game works good with
the keyboard but when I connect my remote to the computer the game said
that no Wii remote was found.
I know that I have connected the remote to the computer because I
played the ViFit games that require the Wii remote to play.
So how can I get the game to connect to my remote? Thanks for the help
in advance!
