Hi Matheus,
I checked the root to that link and it only gives me this text:
It works!
This is the default web page for this server.
The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet.

I could put the link in my list, but it is to the ftp page with no

I would prefer something in html that tells people what the zip is and how
to use it.

though if you have quicktime and win media or whatever active it will

To fix it easiest way is to disable the addon though if you have a

Re: [Audyssey] collection of accessible emulators for the blind

2011-03-27 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

That would be Internet Explorer at fault. In a case of mp3s and media
files like that Internet Explorer will often assume you want to
play/stream the media instead of download it. Its been ages since I
used Internet Explorer, but there should be something under Internet
Options that allows you to change this behavior to prompt you to
download or play the file. The web browser I use, Firefox, certainly
has such an option and that's how I avoid certain files automatically
playing when I click on the links.Firefox comes up with a dialog
asking me to open/play or save the file.

Re: [Audyssey] collection of accessible emulators for the blind

2011-03-27 Thread Ken the Crazy
First, the links to the rom packs are up on the audiogames.net forum for
everybody to see.
Second, to legal and ethical issues, I would have to say that first, I doubt
a company like Nintendo is going to come after a single person or group of
blind people for downloading their roms when dozens of rom sites exist,
especially since they know that one can't get blood from turnips.
Second, I think that people playing roms, even if they don't own a game
console, is good for business. For example, my son has a game boy advanced.
I played the rom of Sound Voyager, and now I have no doubt but that I'm
going to buy that game.
I've also been playing the Mortal Kombat 3 rom on the SNES emulator. I know
I'm not going to get an SNES console and buy Mortal Kombat 3 for that
platform, I'm really tempted to find a version that's made for the PC--if I
can find one that moves the sounds of the players in stereo as the ones for
the SNES do. Therefore, since the roms are much older, and the emulators
are not as good as a real console, I don't see why anybody should complain
about this.
For example, if somebody made a rom of Phrase madness, and, since it was
emulated, had a very slow response time and didn't work as well as the
original, it would be almost like a demo of the game. Sure, you'd have
limitless access, but eventually you'd want the real thing.
The roms pack releases are geared specifically for the blind and will get a
lot more people playing games as long as they don'g get scared about legal
action which isn't going to come anyway.

That is a computer thing, because you have a program associated with that
file type and plays it.
For me with mp3 links I have to right click and save target as.. to get
the file.

Hi,

The link was fine when I downloaded the emulators collection. If
people are having troubles downloading it now I would imagine Flopbox
as reached its maximum download limit and is refusing downloads.
That's what happens if you have a free Flopbox account. It only allows
you a limited number of downloads and then Flopbox stops working. In
my opinion Flopbox is a worthless pile of junk for sharing files on a

Re: [Audyssey] collection of accessible emulators for the blind

2011-03-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shane,

Smile. Yes, I was talking about Dropbox. I can't tell you how many
times friends of mine or just people on various lists have uploaded
their content to Dropbox, and when I attempt to download the contents
I get the download has exceeded message because Dropbox has exceeded
a certain number of downloads for that account. Not only that, but
when you compare the space you get for a free Dropbox account verses a
paid Sendspace Max account the difference is no comparison. Dropbox is
alright if you just want a free sharing account to share with a few
people, but it is not and was never designed for sharing with an
entire list of people like this list. Dropbox is just way too easy to
exceed the download limit and that's why I nickname it Flopbox,
because its a flop when it comes to a reliable file sharing service.
The only way you will get reliable file sharing services is to pay for
them, because the free file sharing services don't work. For instance,
here is what I get with Sendspace Max.

* 100 GB of file storage space.
* A total of 8 GB download bandwidth daily.
* No adds or popups.
* The Sendspace Wizard that allows you to upload, download, and manage
files remotely without ever visiting the Sendspace site directly.
* Files remain on the site until you delete them.

Now, compare that with Dropbox and the answer is pretty clear which is
the superior file sharing service. Of course, Rapid Share and Mega
Share have similar features for their commercial plans, but over all I
found Sendspace is probably the best for the price. Especially, if you
know lots of people on Sendspace and can exchange files with them easy
enough from Max account to Max account.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] collection of accessible emulators for the blind

2011-03-26 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Milos,

Right. this download is only for the more or less accessible rom
emulators themselves. If you want the roms you will have to go to a
dedicated rom sharing site like
.doperoms.com
to actually download and install the roms for each emulator.

As for the issue of sharing the roms on list that's sort of
problematic as far as copyright issues goes. Most companies such as
Nintendo don't have a problem with someone sharing their roms provided
they A, own the original game console, and B, the actual physical
cartrage the game came on. Since I still own my original NES with
several games like TMNT, Double Dragon, Castlevania, Megaman, etc I
can legally download those roms and play them on a NES emulator for
Windows or Linux with no problem. However, since I didn't own a
Nintendo 64 I could get into hot water downloading and sharing N64
roms since I never owned the original media. In some cases it is
questionable when we are talking about multiplatform games.

For instance, I own the original Tomb Raider game released for Windows
95. Unfortunately, it will not work on Windows 7. So what I did is
grabbed the Tomb Raider version for the PSX and now play it under
Linux via a PSX emulator. That is sort of questionable legally since
it is the same game I own, but for a different platform. Not sure how
Edos would respond to me playing the game for a different platform
than the version I purchased back in 1996. However, I technically do
own the original game/media so its not like I am outright wripping the
company off since I paid for the game.

That said, here is my opinion how to handle this as a moderator. Since
it is probably not a good idea legally to simply zip up an archive of
roms for various platforms I think the best thing to do is to suggest
sights where to download the game roms and you download and install
them at your own legal risk. Since I don't know if you legally own the
game or console in question I can't forbid you not to download rom x,
but as a list moderator I can't let people just post these things
freely on list not knowing who has and does not have the original game
and platform. Since I suspect many of you don't actually own a
Gameboy, N64, Super Nintendo, etc as well as the games sharing them in
that case would be software piracy and goes against our list rules. So
just share trusted rom sharing sites and leave it at that. Ok?

Cheers!

I don't personally feel strongly enough to voice an opinion either way when it
comes to the ethics of rom downloading. I did, however, want to just jump in
to post a quote released by Nintendo regarding Rom downloading if you already
own the game in question.

Copied from Nintendo's corporate legal site:
Can I Download a Nintendo ROM from the Internet if I Already Own the Authentic
Game?

There is a good deal of misinformation on the Internet regarding the
backup/archival copy exception. It is not a second copy rule and is often
mistakenly cited for the proposition that if you have one lawful copy of a
copyrighted work, you are entitled to have a second copy of the copyrighted
work even if that second copy is an infringing copy. The backup/archival copy
exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the
rightful owner of an authentic game to ensure he or she has one in the event of
damage or destruction of the authentic. Therefore, whether you have an
authentic game or not, or whether you have possession of a Nintendo ROM for a
limited amount of time, i.e. 24 hours, it is illegal to download and play a
Nintendo ROM from the Internet.

 Hi Milos,

Right. this download is only for the more or less
 accessible rom
emulators themselves. If you want the roms you will have to
 go to a
 dedicated rom sharing site like
 .doperoms.com
to actually download and install the roms for each
 emulator.

As for the issue of sharing the roms on list that's sort
 of
problematic as far as copyright issues goes. Most companies
 such as
Nintendo don't have a problem with someone sharing their
 roms provided
they A, own the original game console, and B, the actual
 physical
cartrage the game came on. Since I still own my original
 NES with
several games like TMNT, Double Dragon, Castlevania,
 Megaman, etc I
can legally download those roms and play them on a NES
 emulator for
Windows or Linux with no problem. However, since I didn't
 own a
Nintendo 64 I could get into hot water downloading and
 sharing N64
roms since I never owned the original media. In some cases
 it is
questionable when we are talking about multiplatform
 games.

For instance, I own the original Tomb Raider game released
 for Windows
 95. Unfortunately, it will not work on Windows 7. So what I
 did is
grabbed the Tomb Raider version for the PSX and now play it
 under
Linux via a PSX emulator. That is sort of questionable
 legally since
it is the same game I own, but for a different platform.
 Not sure how
Edos would respond to me playing the game for a different
 platform
than the version I purchased back in 1996. However, I
 technically do
own the original game/media so its not like I am outright
 wripping the
company off since I paid for the game.

That said, here is my opinion how to handle this as a
 moderator. Since
it is probably not a good idea legally to simply zip up an
 archive of

Hi Michael,

The 7z file format is a zip format used by 7zip. The 7zip archive
utility is free and isn't full of spyware, extra taskbars, and any of
that crap. It is simply an archive tool like Winzip, Winrar, etc, but
unlike Winzip and Winrar it is totally free. The 7z format also has a
huge improvement in compression over rar and zip as well.

you can also get 7zip from http://www.7zip.com/

I actually use it as my main zipping and unzipping program, sinse it's very
symple to use (you can do it from the applications menue in windows
explorer), had a great compression wrate as Tom says, and also has lots of
nice options, like if your unzipping multiple folders, it can put
everything into propper individual folders, or into another location, or
just stick everything where the zip files are.

it's also great for alerting you of broken files in the archive or similar
as well.

I'm a big fan of it myself, I just wish more people new about and used it so
that I could compress stuff in the 7z format more often without getting lots
of questions.

Re: [Audyssey] collection of accessible emulators for the blind

2011-03-25 Thread dark
Well Ken, Mame if I remember rightly stands for multiple arcade machine
emulator.

Thus, the rom's you can run on it are only those of arcade games, be that
Tron, the simpsons beat em up or something else.

Sinse back in the 80's and 90's, many games like golden axe and double
dragon also had ports on consoles like the Snes and Mega drive, this means
there are some duplications sinse games like double dragon came out as
coinops on those systems, though there are often advantages in playing games
both on the arcade system and on the console version.

for instance, Arcade golden axe has better sound and graphics than any of
it's console ports, however Mega drive golden axe has a duel mode, a last
level, and far more options in the game.

Then of course there were many games that never had arcade originals
before, --- -Mario brothers 2, the Turrican series, the donkey Kong country
games on the snes etc, so you won't find these on mame.

Myself, Mame is the only emulator I've ever got into running being as I
personally own a snes and mega drive anyway, and playing on the original
console is far easier than running emulators.

i've also done amigar emulation, though only to play original turrican games
sinse Amigar emulation (as your emulating an actual computer not just a
games system), is far more complicated.

Generally I find emulators extremely buggy and tempramental, and some roms
may or may not work, so though I've had some fun playing a couple of arcade
classics like the Turtles walk along beat em up game and arcade double
dragon, it's not something I tend to bother with, especially
considdering that a lot of ports of older games are available in far more
stable versions on consoles, for instance the Nes classics series on the
gameboy advanced which I can run on my gamecube through the gba player.

Running old games is chiefly what I'd be interested in getting a wii for,
though as I've said I've never found a sufficiently workable way of using
the annoying menues enough to run a game once I had it.

Beware the Grue!

Hi Dark.
In the case of you having the consoles, there's no point in having a
emulator to run the games, the original versions will be always better.
although i can say that the emulators are working pretty good, since
these consoles are old like the psx, snes etc, you don't even need a
awesome system to run the games, and all of then that i tested worked
perfectly(at least the sound) and run really fast.
i strongly recommend you try the psx emulator with some of the games
i'll post in these packs of games, there are lots of fun stuff there to
try.

What is the difference between this pack of emulators and the MAME
emulator, which seems to run just about every kind of game out there?
There was a game I used to play, when I had the MAME, called Tron. In the
first level, you and your opponent would throw power discs at each other.
It was a bit simplistic, but rather fun as well.

Ok, while this interface seems somewhat accessible, how would I get it to
find something like a mame image of a game I have - have tried copying it
all over, moving it around, etc. etc., and never appears?

Re: [Audyssey] collection of accessible emulators for the blind

2011-03-25 Thread Bob Montowski

I have been playig with the MAME emulator for years now.
The only real problem I ran into was when new version of MAME came out to
emulatore newer arcade roms, some of the rolder game roms stopped working
and would not even show up in the MAME list of roms on your system.
I solved this by putting roms onto a DVD with all versions of MAME that I
had.
If I wished to play a certain arcade game, I might have to change fromone
MAME to the next till the game showed up int he game list.
MAME was cute in that you had to put quarters intot he emulator...grin...to
start up a game.

I found all versions of MAME to work fine with Jaws.
So it will be interesting to try this blind accessible version this thread
is talkign about?

2011-03-25 Thread Ken the Crazy
Well, judging by the low volume of traffic on the list today, everybody
seems to be playing it lol. It's not just mame though. The mame emulator
is only one of about four or five.

you only need a program to unzip it
my favorite is called 7zip, it's free, fast to use and there are no
spywares or anything like that.
go to
www.7zip.com
and download.
the file is very small.
