*** Goanet Reader: Quiet village life: Of Chorao, the island of fidalgos
-- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| || -- Quiet village life: Of Chorao, the island of fidalgos Prava Rai [EMAIL PROTECTED] Many people ask us why we chose to live in Goa and not anywhere else in India, or, for that matter, any other part of the world. The next question is Why Chorao -- an island village? After all even some people from Chorao have abandoned their homes in favour of city life. Of course there are compelling reasons for them to make this shift -- better schools for their children and proximity to their place of employment or simply a change from a quiet village life. We wanted to exchange the noisy city life with precisely this quiet village life. Initially, we lived in a rented apartment near the Indoor Stadium in Campal, the first floor of Villa Braganca Pereira. The location was impeccable and we could see the wide arc of the river as it flowed into the Arabian Sea. But to our misery, we found that the ground outside was a favourite New Year party venue. No doubt the parties were successful while we hunted around for a quiet hotel room to usher in the New Years noiselessly. On one occasion, we found that there was nowhere to go and decided to brave it out. It was a harrowing experience when the noise blasted on until eight in the morning -- long after midnight. For us it was clear that the further we were from sources of noise like new year parties, temple music and the clamour of traffic, it was better for our health and well-being. This is not to say that we are not assaulted every now and then by that ubiquitous equipment -- the loudspeakers -- proclaiming devotion and nuptials in equal measure of nerve-shattering insistence. However, it is not true that we are surrounded by sepulchral silence either. Each season brings with it its own special voices. Come September -- the evening meal time is filled with the works of an unknown soloist. The music we hear but the shy performer is hidden in the shadows of the night. My husband smiles indulgently when I perk up and tell him that the Spanish castanets are here, for the music made by these shy performers is reminiscent of the accompaniment to the flamenco dancers of swirling skirts and flashing eyes. In the days when my son had to catch 6.30 am bus to school, a bird voice urged him to hurry politely, it sang, Quick please, quick please. I would gently admonish him while he lingered sleepily over his breakfast, 'Even the birds are telling you to hurry up'. And there is another bird which gently sings, Slp – slp! These aerial singers are so many, some permanent residents and others that the seasons bring. Every now and then you hear a song which is different joined by myriad of singers building up a veritable airy Tower of Babel. I am reminded of Daudet's words (in a different context): Why are thy songs so short? a bird was once asked. Is it because thou art so short of breath? The bird replied: I have very many songs and I should like to sing them all. Often we not only hear them but also see them. A visiting friend was delighted when she saw a couple of Paradise Fly- catchers playing hide-and-seek among the tall branches in the garden. Once lured by a strange honking call, I wandered into the woodland surrounding our home and was almost brushed by the wings of a Great Indian Hornbill as it swished majestically away. Mr. Mendonca, the friendly proprietor of Mr. Farmer Nursery located on the NH 17 in Guirim, advised me to plant mulberry bushes. He said that birds will come to eat the berries. So I did and now the birds and I share the delicious fruits. They feast from the tall branches while I confine myself to the lower ones. Speaking about fruits, there are mango trees which have grown tall; I was told it was because they were competing for light with other tall trees like the teak and even kajra -- a jungli which grows in great abundance and with great abandon. We harvest kokum fruits with which I have experimentd. I make tart filling with it and it has proved to be a great standby for cranberry sauce to accompany pork roast or the Christmas turkey. There are three or four varieties of mangoes and wishing to fulfill my dream of making the land pay for itself, I have tried unsuccessfully to sell the fruits. There are a few sharks in Chorao who survey your trees around April and tell you

[Goanet] Horseshoe crab: MoEF promises prompt action
-- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| | Attending...drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]| -- Horseshoe crab: MoEF promises prompt action EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 25: Breaking its silence over the future of the endangered Horseshoe crab, the Ministry of Environment and Forest has promised prompt action to protect one of the earth's oldest survivors. ''We have received communications from the ST ministry. Unfortunately, there is no status study yet on horseshoe crabs. We will initiate work soon and, unless any other agency comes forward, will involve the Wildlife Institute of India for the purpose. Once we have the report, we will put the horseshoe crab in an appropriate schedule,'' Director General (Wildlife) RP Katyal said. The Indian Express had on December 21 reported how the MoEF was sitting on a proposal by Science and technology Minister Kapil Sibal to include the crab that has survived 16 ice ages, in Schedule IV to ensure protection and research. Claiming it would involve research along the entire coastline, Katyal initially said a status report might take anything between six months to two years. Told that the dwindling crab population of just 3,000 found at a pocket along the Orissa coast, may become critically endangered by that time, he opened up: ''It's true we don't have much information about horseshoe crabs yet. We can certainly benefit by the work done by the CSIR scientists at Goa and Pune. We will also like to see the film made by Mike Pandey.'' Mike Pandey, whose landmark film - Timeless Traveller - on horseshoe crabs has won nine top international awards, expressed satisfaction. ''We make these films to generate awareness and save the species. The policy-makers are welcome to watch these. But I would be happier if these films are also shown to the masses in national television,'' he said. Speaking from Goa's National Institute of Oceanography, Dr Anil Chatterjee, who is researching on horseshoe crabs for years, offered all help to the MoEF. ''We will certainly help to accelerate any process that secures the future of this unique creature,'' he said. At Goa lab, nine patents are filed and scientists are at the threshold of some path-breaking discoveries. Though being bred in labs at Goa, the absence of legal protection and the fact that they take about 10-12 years to reach sexual maturity, the horseshoe crabs face danger of extinction in India. -- |Goa - 2005 Santosh Trophy Champions | || | Support Soccer Activities at the grassroots in our villages | | Vacationing in Goa this year-end - Carry and distribute Soccer Balls | --
[Goanet] Nightmare in paradise
-- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| | Attending...drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]| -- Nightmare in paradise Sunday December 25 2005 15:07 IST newindpress Colin Todhunter Sti it, there's sumthing at the bottum Siggi had just finished impersonating my accent very badly for what seemed like the 50th time that morning, then proceeded to light what might have been her 20th cigarette of the day. Then, through what seemed to be a permanent haze of tobacco smoke around her head, she went into her slapstick routine for the 10th time centred on some hapless South African guy we had met on Baga beach the day before. After that, she made yet another joke about how old I was. By the time she had finished I felt like I was 80. I think you'll agree that's pretty good going seeing that it was still only 9.15 in the morning! My traveling companion Siggi, and her laser beam humour, is the only redeeming aspect of Calangute that I can recall. Calangute is the centre of Goa's international package tourist trade and each time I visit I notice more and more new hotels, restaurants and English pubs. Given its position, it should be the jewel in the crown of Goan tourism. But ever sprawling Calangute is becoming over developed and appears to lack any coherent planning strategy. If there is any strategy then it doesn't seem to be having much of an impact at least as far aesthetics is concerned. The place is commercialism overlaid with more commercialism, with each trinket and jewellery shop, each overpriced restaurant and each shopping or hotel complex leaving me craving to escape. The hippies arrived on Calangute beach in the early 70s, much to the dismay and even moral outrage of some of the local people. At that time little existed beyond fisher families and villages. Then in the 80s came cheap flights from the UK to entice the British package tourist who sought sun, beaches and low costs. The prices in the various concrete high rise costa del hell holes British tourist spots in Spain increased and over the last decade Goa has become the new Spain for many Brits. Now Brits, Germans, Scandinavians and increasingly Russians flock here. It always strikes me as pretty strange that so many Brits travel half the world to arrive in a place where they expect (and get) fish and chips, English pubs, and now a fully blown Irish bar, with varnished floor and brass hand-pumps, which could have been transported from any number of UK high streets. It's not an imitation - it's the real deal. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Calangute itself. Sometimes when in Calangute I have to remind myself that I am actually still in Goa. Mexico, Spain, Thailand, Turkey and any other number of places have their own plethora of Calangute type places, each conforming to the standards of commercial tourism and each having a huge impact on the local economy, culture and ecological systems. I guess they serve a purpose however for those hankering after the tourist dollar (or pound or euro or rouble) and those in search of cheap breaks. Whereas Spain is just a short hop from the UK, Goa is in India, a faraway place and one of the most exciting and diverse countries on earth. To travel half way around the globe and then never venture beyond a six kilometre radius of Calangute, which is what many do, seems such a waste. Calangute is the tourist ghetto par excellence. During my latest visit in October, I found myself on a moped just outside of Calangute and asked Siggi if she would like to take a photo of the scene at hand. There was a newly built, surprisingly architecturally pleasing building set against a forest of coconut trees and green hills. It was a beautiful scene. Siggi declined the option however and instead asked, Is that building a hotel that caters to foreigners who never interact with local people because there is a bar, restaurant and pool on site, and they never have to leave the complex? I responded that it probably was. Siggi was as sharp as they come but let's face it, it doesn't take a PhD in world tourism to understand the nature of much of modern day tourism. Believe it or not, I actually like Goa. And there is certainly a heck of a lot more to it than Calangute. It has some lovely beaches, great historical sites and beautiful scenery ranging from lush paddy fields and towering coconut trees to the rain forests leading up to Castle Rock in the Western Ghats. It is an international draw for good reason and I am continually drawn to the place. But for some reason and at some point I

[Goanet] Memorial services mark tsunami anniversary
-- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| | Attending...drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]| -- Memorial services mark tsunami anniversary NDTV Correspondent Monday, December 26, 2005 (New Delhi): It's been a year since the tsunami hit the Indian Ocean on December 26 in 2004, and changed the destinies of thousands of people. It began with an earthquake off the western coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Measuring an unbelievable 9 points on the Richter scale, it was one of the largest earthquakes ever to be recorded. Scientists later said that the earthquake itself lasted close to ten minutes when most major earthquakes are no more than a few seconds. It caused the entire planet to vibrate at least a few centimetres. But the worst was yet to come. The earthquake caused the seabed to rise vertically by several metres, displacing massive volumes of water. Worst-recorded tsunami The turmoil in the ocean took the form of a killer tsunami that devastated the coastlines of Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and South India. It was nature in its most raw and ferocious form, the single worst tsunami in mankind's recorded history. Entire villages in Indonesia and Sri Lanka were swept away, five star resorts in Thailand were swamped, and in the Maldives whole islets temporarily disappeared. Thousands of homes were also destroyed on coastlines from Malaysia to east Africa. Port Blair was the first place in India to be hit by the killer waves. Chennai followed soon after, killing hundreds of people. Rows upon rows of beachfront properties were completely destroyed by the wall of water when it crashed, and thousands of survivors had to spend the night in the open. The Nuclear Power station in Kalapakkam near Chennai was shut down after water entered it. Extensive damage Of the 13 districts that were struck by the tidal waves along Tamil Nadu's coastline, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Kanniyakumari were the worst affected. Nagapattinam alone accounted for 6,065 deaths in the catastrophe, which was 76 per cent of Tamil Nadu's total toll. A majority of the victims were fishermen, who not only lost their relatives, their homes but their means of livelihood as well. The tsunami caused extensive damages in Jetties at Aberdeen, Phoenix Bay, Junglighat and Haddo. Little Andaman, however, was the worst affected in the Andaman Island chain. There was immense damage at the main settlement on Hut Bay. But there was staggering damage and loss of life in the Nicobar chain of islands close to the epicentre of the undersea earthquake that triggered off the tsunami, and Car Nicobar was the worst hit. While Nicobarese tribals in interior hamlets lit candles in commemoration, the chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Force converged at the Air Force base at Car Nicobar and dedicated a Tsunami Memorial in memory of those killed. In the Jayanti village another memorial by the Nicobar district administration was unveiled. Recovery efforts All the countries around the Indian Ocean, from Indonesia to Somalia, are observing the first anniversary of the tsunami with memorial services and silent prayers. Thousands of foreign survivors and bereaved relatives are in the affected countries to mark the event and to promote solidarity and remembrance, even as the tsunami disaster zone struggles with recovery efforts. Memorial ceremonies were also held at sunrise over Patong beach in Phuket and Bang Nian beach in Kaho Lak. Indonesian President Susilo Yudhoyono presided over the memorial services in Banda Aceh, which suffered catastrophic damage. The mourning comes as survivors and officials take stock of the massive relief operation and peace processes in Sri Lanka, one of the hardest hit by the tsunami. In Sri Lanka, troops have been patrolling the streets of the capital, Colombo, as security has been tightened for ceremonies marking the tsunami's anniversary. Disputes over aid delivery and an upsurge in LTTE violence have dashed hopes that the tsunami would bring a final end to the country's long-running civil conflict. Memorials in Sri Lanka, which lost about 31 000 people dead, will focus on Peraliya, where a train was engulfed by the waves, killing more than 1000 people in the world's worst-ever rail disaster. President Mahinda Rajapakse will make an address to the nation from the site. The country's tourism board has also organised vigils at the coastal town of Bentota. -- |Goa - 2005 Santosh Trophy Champions

I myself published an article on him in the 1980s in the now defunct Sunday Standard at the behest of Dom Moraes who was its editor. I dont have a copy with me. Perhaps Dr. Pereira has and can share it with you though it must be outdated. Re: Mr. Jorge Noronhas and Ms Livia Noronhas mail on three points about Abbe Faria, apparently my reply didnt reach you. So here it goes again. 1. Dr. Manohar Rai Sardessais translation of Abbe Farias book on Lucid Sleep, was sponsored by Margaos eminent psychiatrist Dr. Rajendra Hegde who is pursuing the matter of its publication. 2. Regarding the translation of Varde Valaulikars biography of Abbe Faria, Id suggested that perhaps Dr. Hedge could get it done. Since then Dr. Hegde has been pursuing the matter with some potential translators. But the main problem is getting a publisher since the Abbe is not well known outside Goa among the general public and publishers are reluctant to take on the task. 3. Regarding Farias year of birth, 1755, which appears in the quote from his baptism certificate in Dalgados book is a misprint. A copy of the same document is reproduced as document no.49 in Cunha Rivaras Revolt of 1787 edited by Charles Borges and shows the correct year as 1756. There is no doubt regarding that date. Luis S. [Goanet] Adventure tourism picking up in India, infrastructure needed
-- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| | Attending...drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]| -- Adventure tourism picking up in India, infrastructure needed New Delhi, Dec 25 (PTI): With tourists, from within and outside the country, showing a marked preference for adrenaline releasing sports over other attractions, Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) has asked the government to facilitate infrastructure for it. More and more tourists inside the country are now asking for adventure sports. We need government's support to meet the rising demand from the tourists both from within and outside the country, President ATOAI Ajeet Bajaj told PTI. With the government support we can attract half a million foreign tourists and the domestic adventure tourism market can see a ten-fold growth in next five years, he said. Adventure sports include trekking, rafting, mountaineering and other water sports, camel/jeep/horse safaris, bike tours, sailing, ballooning, hand gliding and other aero sports, skiing, wildlife safaris, fishing, scuba diving, tribal tours and heli skiing, he said. The industry has witnessed a growth of over 500 per cent during the last decade, but infrastructure has not swelled accordingly. Import duty to bring in sophisticated equipments required from the sports should be scrapped, he demanded. Currently, the operators end up paying over 4 per cent of the equipment cost as import duty. We request the government to scrap the duty so as to help us establish infrastructure that could hold and attract tourists from the foreign soil. About the growth projections, he said on the domestic front there is an annual increase of 40 per cent tourists while the number of international holidaymakers is growing at the rate of seven per cent per annum. Out of about 20 lakh adventure tourists, international tourists contribute up to 10 per cent. While the rest 18 lakh are from within the country itself. Ratio of foreigners and Indian adventure tourists is now 10:90 as compared to 60:40 five years ago, Bajaj said. On the trained manpower in the sector, Director Maxxfun Holidays (a Delhi-based tour agency) Surpal Singh Deora said: there are limited numbers of institutes that offer serious courses while most of the sports are managed by untrained people. There is an urgent need to have more such institutes that could offer serious courses. About the states with possible geographical terrain, he said: Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Uttaranchal are few states which are the major contribute to the growth of adventure tourism in India. On the growth of the sector in India, Bajaj said: India as an adventure tourism destination has grown in popularity both in the domestic and international market. The industry has seen a boom in the last decade but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Given the right impetus, India could attract half a million foreign adventure tourists and the domestic adventure tourism market can see a ten-fold growth in next five years, he said. -- |Goa - 2005 Santosh Trophy Champions | || | Support Soccer Activities at the grassroots in our villages | | Vacationing in Goa this year-end - Carry and distribute Soccer Balls | --

It is very important to learn Music, and thus preserve our great heritage. Though Goans have it in their blood, still we should keep learning, as music notation has no end, said Mr.Kamat, while speaking to Daijiworld correspondent. Harmonium, Pakwad (percussions), 'Tall' (small cymbal) are being given to Hindu cultural groups over the past years. Also this year it has been distributed to 40 groups of south Goa and also on 28 December they will be distributed to North Goa cultural groups. While revealing the scheme to this correspondent, Kamat further said that members of the legislative assembly had unanimously demanded that government provide the benefits of this scheme also to Christian cultural groups. By taking cognizance of their demands, the department a special scheme, and decided to give drums, trumpet, violin and guitar under this scheme, under which the groups will benefit from next year. -- Cheers, Gabe Menezes. Is the Christian school system not promoting an entrepreneurial mindset? Do the schools encourage an employee mindset versus a employer or business person's attitude? The stakes are high. On Hill Road alone the turnover is in the crores. Who supports and who benefits from the opportunities of the system? Who stays with the status quo and who progresses? [Goanet] No title specified - Pio Fernandes
-- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| | Attending...drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]| -- No title specified By EUNICE del ROSARIO http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/Story.asp?Article=130937Sn=BNEWIssueID=28281 Indian writer and composer Pio Fernandes came to Bahrain more than 15 years ago as a young man fresh from Bollywood, with the dream of one day being able to reach out to others through his musical compositions and stage dramas. Today, he is one of the most respected composers in his community and his work is fast getting the attention of many others in the field. The 37-year-old artist last month released his latest album, a drama entitled You Are Great Grandpa, which was received to great reviews from Konkani- speakers in Bahrain. It was the follow up to his debut CD, Tum Ostore (You Woman), released in August, which features 12 original songs by Pio and sung by seasoned Indian artists from Goa and Bahrain. PIO FERNANDES When did you discover your love for writing? I started out as a poet when I was very young and I developed that talent, which I believe is God given, more and more in time. I have written for newspapers and radio shows in India and developed my gift more when I arrived in Bahrain. When you are far away from home, you tend to forget many things about the land you came from and writing poems about my country, my family and friends and just things I was feeling, made me feel good. The poems made sure I did not forget people and things that mattered. How was it like working in Bollywood? Do you think of going back and working with some of the world's busiest actors again? I worked in Bombay as the assistant to Goan director Joy Augustine two years before coming to Bahrain. I very much enjoyed it. Working in the film industry is exciting and Bollywood is filled with many talented people. I worked with top actors like Shakti Kapoor, Tom Walter and Chandrachud Singh, who is also known as 'Rocky', but I think Bahrain is where I will be staying for a while yet. Coming from someone who has lived in Bahrain for a long time, do you think there has been an increase in leisure activities here? Actually, I think the number of leisure activities, particularly cultural activities that many enjoy, have decreased over the years. For example, there are very few events that cater for the Goan community in Bahrain. After my last stage show Tuven Uzo Cailo (You Set the Fire) in 2000, there has not been a play for Goans. I hope that there would be more cultural events, which everyone - regardless of nationality - could enjoy. I believe doing things in a unique way and innovative ideas should be accepted by all communities. What do you think should be done to change this? People in Bahrain generally know where to go to be entertained, but what people need is a variety. There is a lack of cultural events, which a more mature audience would enjoy - such as stage plays. I think when people start supporting the staging of such shows and voice their needs for these activities, then things will change, because there is no problem with support from the authorities when it comes to staging cultural shows. You have just released your second album, which is proving to be a success. What can people expect from you next? I have plans of releasing an album in English to reach a wider audience. There are also plans of releasing a video album, which will be shot in Bahrain. I enjoy writing and people can expect more to come. You've worked in Bollywood, released successful albums, staged several plays and right now you are working on another album and a music video. Is there anything else you would like to do? I have written several plays in Konkani, Hindi and English over the years, all for radio listeners in India. A number of them, including the English drama House for Sale, were performed in stages in India and Bahrain. I wrote it in memory of the late Amir, HH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. I hope to one day be able to write short plays for radio listeners in Bahrain. Writing is my passion and it would give me pleasure to write plays for listeners here. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Yes, and that is to read a lot. It is unfortunate that these days, fewer and fewer people read, when there is still so much to learn. I always believe that one can never learn too much. There is always room for more knowledge. I don't to this day consider myself an expert because I am still learning something new with every day. It is
[Goanet] India: Raping of women on running trains seems very common now a day.
-- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| | Attending...drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]| -- India: Raping of women on running trains seems very common now a day. Woman gang raped, passengers looted in running train. Just about 2 weeks before, I read on Goan Dailies about a woman who was rapped on a running train. Just 2 days ago, I read another such case (on Times of India Print Edition dtd 23/12)where a 22yrs old women was gang raped on Puspak Express on Mubai-Lucknow bound train. It was during this robbing spree that one of them laid his eyes on a 22year old married woman. The dacoits soon dragged her to the toilet and began gang-raping her. When three men protested, they were thrown out of the train The nightmare began at about 10pm when about a dozen armed men barged into the train in Bhopal. From there, as the train sped towards the next station, Bina, it was a sheer orgy of violence that lasted almost three hours; there was no trace, of course, of the GRP or any other police force. No GRP in sight, the criminals have a free run. Carrying the loot, they get off near Janshi and fade into the night. However, the Railway minister, Lalu Prasad said in New Delhi that the rape could not be confirmed. (Source: Times of India (print edition) dtd 23rd Dec) My comments: I must say this route is very notorious, where armed GRP themselves looting passengers at day light particularly Goans on Goa Express. Ref. my prev. posting see below. It wont be surprised me if GRP themselves are involved in the daring rape/dacoity or go hand in hand with the dacoits. Shame on Indian Railways!! Hak'k thu Quote: As 'Travelling' is one of my hobbies, I often travel by train. Last time I travelled in March 2005 by Goa Express to Delhi and came back by Goa Sampark Kranti. [Goanet] Goanet Reader: Quiet village life: Of Chorao, the island of fidalgos
-- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| | Attending...drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]| -- Quiet village life: Of Chorao, the island of fidalgos Prava Rai [EMAIL PROTECTED] Many people ask us why we chose to live in Goa and not anywhere else in India, or, for that matter, any other part of the world.

-- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| | Attending...drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]| -- Hello Friends, Merry X'mas and a Prosperous bright New Year 2005 to all of you. Have been reading very constructive and educational articles by very intelligent writers on the Goanet and hats of to them. At times we concentrate on issues which may be less important at the moment forgetting those which need our attention and action. Who could/would inform us as to how many legal cases are pending in all the courts of Goa? How does our judiciary system work in deciding cases, there are cases which are pending for donkey years the main complainant/s may have died so what happens to those case when there is no one to follow? Why can't all legal cases be heard and disposed off at the earliest? Let's go back and think for a moment what have i/we given to Goa and Goans in 2005? In how many houses have i managed to connect water/electricity, how many Goans have i managed to provide employment, how many homeless have we been able to provide homes? How many poor lives have i managed to touch? How many hospitals have i visited to check on those patients who are suffering. Have i managed to keep my area clean ?How many people have we provided clothing and shelter? With how many poor people have i shared my food ? Goanet is no doubt a very interesting source of information but at times it can get too political, to monotonous, and at times one may not find anything interesting ? People should go to the interiors of Goa and come up with stories which were never told or heard , find out the miseries of those less and underprivileged Goans. Can anyone figure out how many unemployed Goans are there in Goa be it qualified unemployed or not qualified unemployed and what are we doing (let's forget about the Governments role in providing jobs to Goans till date there have been names in Employment Exchange from 1980's onwards wonder what is happening in that department?) Goanet should come up with a survey to find out its own performance as to whether its reaching the Goan masses, how constructive it has been to Goans, what changes should people of Goa propose to Goanet and how could Goanet surge ahead touching Greater Heights. LET'S FEEL THE PULSE OF THE POOR, HELP THE UNEMPLOYED YOUTH. GOANS, THE MEDIA SHOULD PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN DEVELOPING THIS AND MAKING IT SUCCEED, OTHERWISE WE ARE JUST READING ONE ARTICLE IN DIFFERENT MANNERS. Let's ponder for a while and see how best we could improve those dark/grey areas in Goa where one needs to attend it Urgently. According to the notice published in weekender dated 11.12.2005 Ramesh Dessai has cleared stated Cuncolim union functions from his residential address of Dandora Salcete, Goa. The notice given in the address clearly shows that Cuncolim Union functions from his residential address, vaz has stated his reply to the notice. For the records Cuncolim Union does not have an office premises of its own nor does it function from any fixed location of its own. The notice inserted by the Cuincolim union president states that he (Armstrong Vaz ) is having the records/materials of the union. A charge which has been rejected by vaz. Incidentally Ramesh Dessai in his notice has not stated what are the materials /records in the possession of Vaz. these yet another ploy to harass me Vaz has cried in his reply to the allegations leveled by the president in the notice. The former general secretary has questioned that if the suspension order of his was taken on 11/7/05, why the president has woken up from his slumber after a gap of five months and inserted a notice in the papers. Further Ramesh has stated in is notice that the decision to ask for the records from Vaz was taken on 17.08.2005 then why was he sleeping over the decision for 118 days, questions Vaz. These is just a ploy to harass a journalist who consistently criticizing and exposing the wrong doings, shortcomings of Cuncolim union over the last one year, states vaz in his clarification to the notice. The president Ramesh Dessai has stoop to such a low level to drag my mother into the controversy and has leveled false and baseless allegations leveled against her in the notice. She is no where connected with Cuncolim Union then why drag a third party into the issue. The ploy to drag her name in the notice exposes the true character of Politician who has lost power and it is a clear cut act of a frustrated and out of power politician. He states. As the president Ramesh Dessai had taken charge from the outgoing president, all the records where handed over to him by the out going committee and he is having the records and is trying to mislead people with a false and malicious notice published in weekender dated 11.12.2005. Further Vaz has stated that the only materials/ records in his possession were the two rubber stamps of Cuncolim union which have since been handed over to the former chairperson of Cuncolim municipal council and neighbour Dilip Dessai on 7th Sept 2005. As Cuncolim Union does not have an office premises of its own nor does it function from any fixed location, vaz has stated that he handed over the two rubber stamps to Dilip Dessai at his residence on 7th Sept 2005. He has further stated that regarding the false , malicious and defamatory allegations leveled against me through a letter dated 25.06.2005 by Ramesh Dessai relating to press publicity and one of abuse. Vaz has replied to the letter of Dessai in his reply dated 30th June 2005wherein he had replied and denied the charges leveled against him through a three page letter. The reply which was handed over to vice president and senior member of the union Rudolph Noronha. The reply of vaz handed over to vice president and senior member of the union Rudolph Noronha was rejected by the president as it was not handed over to him but another committee member Vaz mentions in his clarification. Dessai in his weekender notice dated 11.12.2205 has stated that whereas a show cause notice was issued to shri Armstrong vaz general secretary of Cuncolim union seeking explanation from him within eight days from receipt of the said memorandum for the misconduct enumerated therein. He has further stated in his notice that he has failed to give an explanation to the charges leveled against him. when I have asked for eight more days and submitted a letter through the vice president Rudoplh Noronha , it left best to the imagination of the readers who is trying to misguide and beat around the bush and push the real issues in the back ground vaz states. Wouldn't it be nice if you had a bunch of freely and legally available Christmas songs you could listen to all day? Burn on CDs and hand over to your relatives? Well, here's a list of 110 126 songs which are all explicitly released under a Creative Commons license (no, I did not consider songs which are merely podsafe!) and thus can be shared, listened to, and sometimes even modified freely. -- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| | Attending...drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]| -- It appears nearly every state in India is planning progressive developments in its transportation system. All this, designed to bring in more domestic and International tourists. Yet the Goans, as seen on cyber Goa, are in the usual griping mood about what they have and what perhaps is needed FOR THE FUTURE. Not long ago on the national Nightly Business Report (NBR) in the USA, an Indian reporter from New Delhi, informed the listeners how airline travel in India has increased and is projected to triple in India with the burgeoning middle class. He said, the prediction are that rail travel in the India will be like in the USA - a thing of the past for most upper and middle income Indians. To meet this demand, national and private airline carriers from India were among the biggest buyers of new commercial aircraft at a recent European air show. So perhaps, just perhaps, Goa may need two airports. Ok I will settle for one-and-a-half commercial airports - if you know what I mean. Or do we want to cry later how Goa is neglected by the Center? The two new domestic airports have been planned in Kota and Kishangarh near Ajmer, while Jaipur and Udaipur airports are likely to be granted the international status in 2006. A cabinet memo has been finalised and is scheduled to come up in the next cabinet meeting expected to be held in the new week, official sources told IANS. The union government has already granted its approval for developing the existing Kishangarh strip into a domestic airport and to establish another airport in Kota for which state government has already identified and acquired land, the sources said. Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials would visit both places for a preliminary inspection of the proposed sites. The proposed airports are expected to boost the tourism sector in the state. Kishangarh is about 25 km from the pilgrimage town of Ajmer, where the shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti and the world's only temple dedicated to Hindu god Brahma attract a large number of devotees. Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel is expected to visit the lake city of Udaipur to launch the airport expansion project. In a bid to facilitate and attract more tourists to the state, the government has also decided to launch a meter gauge heritage train on the lines of Palace on Wheels. Tourism department officials were negotiating with the ministry of railways issues related to profit sharing, operation and management of the project, which is to be launched in January, sources said. In the Middle Ages most European countries used the Julian calendar and observed New Year's Day on March 25, called Annunciation Day and celebrated as the occasion on which it was revealed to Mary that she would give birth to the Son of God. With the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1582, Roman Catholic countries began to celebrate New Year's Day on January 1. Scotland accepted the Gregorian calendar in 1600; Germany, Denmark, and Sweden about 1700; and England in 1752. Menezes, who graduated from IIT, Bombay, in 1970, has pledged a total $3 million to the institute. IIT gave me priceless education – and this is a small way to say thank you, said Menezes, who has been a long-time and consistent supporter of IIT, Bombay, and is co-chairman of Heritage Fund, the institute's alumni fund. The centre is among several major projects that the institute has planned to mark its golden jubilee celebrations in 2007-08. The proposed facility will provide the needed space for meetings, conferences and other events that will continue to attract the best students, faculty, and researchers. It is also expected to act as a stimulus to increase RD initiatives and enhance collaboration with the industry, thereby helping Mumbai and India build and maintain a position of global leadership in science and technology. -- || |Goanetters annual meet in Goa is scheduled for Dec 27, 2005 @ 4pm | || |The Riviera Opposite Hotel Mandovi, Panjim (near Ferry Jetty/Riverfront)| | Attending...drop a line to [EMAIL PROTECTED]| -- Goa in a celebratory mood Webindia123.com Panaji | December 25, 2005 12:15:06 PM IST Goa is in a celebratory mood. Rated amongst the world's top five most-visited destinations during Christmas and New Year, it is gearing up to host a record number of tourists this year. Goa tourism authorities are estimating the state will be home to over a 100,000 visitors, one-third of these will be foreign tourists, during the week intervening Christmas and New Year's Day. Room-occupancy in most of the multi-segment hotels that dot the state's nearly 105 km beach-fringed coastline has crossed 90 percent, according to Goa Travel and Tourism Association (GTTA) official. The continued demand is likely to see tariffs hit the roof. A room priced between Rs.12,000-15,000 a night is available for Rs.18,000-24,000 during the Dec 24-31 week. Sources in the hotel industry say the upward trend of prices may continue till mid of January. Goa's immigration officials confirm they have booked over 12,000 foreign arrivals by direct charter flights to the state's sole airport this fortnight alone. The authorities also have on their books some 4,000-odd registrations by foreigners who arrived earlier and have long-term, multiple-entry visas. They enter the country through Goa and travel to other parts of India from here. But most return to spend the Christmas week on Goan shores, Rina Torcato, deputy superintendent of police, incharge of Foreigner's Branch, told IANS here. Goa's booming hospitality industry has planned a mega treat for the visitors that include brunches, dinners, traditional local dance and music and beach parties. Some of the biggest Christmas events have been scheduled at beachside venues in the famed Calangute-Baga stretch of the northern coastline. Meanwhile, unmindful of the hype and hoopla over the commercial-driven festivities, Goa's numerically large Catholic minority is sticking to tradition to participate in religious and family-centric celebrations associated with Christmas. Catholics account for over a quarter of the state's 1.5 million resident population. Christmas is also the time when a majority of Goa's expatriate population, mostly settled in West Asia, Europe and North America, return home for an annual family reunion. This apart, Goa, touted in some quarters as the place that gave trance music a global brand, also has an unofficial, clandestine method of celebration - rave parties. This year, the police have turned the heat on these drug-laced parties that are frequented by foreigners looking for a 'kick' as these become a hotspot for deals in narcotics and other banned stimulants.
