എന്തിനാണ് കുതിര കയറുന്നത്? മത പുരോഹിതന്മാര്‍ ഇതിനെ എതിര്തല്ലോ, എന്ത്
കൊണ്ടാണ് അവര്കെതിരെ റിഞ്ഞു രാധ വായ തുറക്കാത്തത്. വര്കല പറഞ്ഞത് സി പി എമിന്റെ
ഔദ്യോഗിക അഭിപ്രായമാല്ലെന്നു രേഞ്ഞുവിനു തന്നെ അറിയാമല്ലോ, അപ്പോള്‍ സി പി
എമിന് നേരെ കുതിര കയറാനുള്ള ഉല്‍സാഹം പുരോഹിതര്‍ക്ക് നേരെ കാണിക്കാത്തത്
എന്താണ്?
അപ്പോള്‍ പൊട്ടകിണര്‍ പുറത്തു വരുന്നത് ഞങ്ങള്‍ കാണുന്നു.ഇനി

In Kerala, nobody opposedhomosexuality except left leaders, aloong with some
Christian groups. No other party, including the BJP came with any noise.
Varkala Radhakrishnan wrote very well that homosexuality is unnatural and
there are important reforms to be done than this. Still liberals oppose
'sakhakkal' on everything.

Sometimes for political reasons, what is wrong in 'adine pattiyakkal'?

ജീവിയെ തിന്നുന്ന മനുഷ്യര്‍ ഭൂമിയില്‍ തന്നെ ധാരാളം ഉള്ളപ്പോള്‍.പിന്നെ ഈ
ഭൂകമ്പം മുഴുവന്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കെണ്ടാതിന്റെ കാര്യം വല്ലതുമുണ്ടോ? വായിച്ചു ചിരിച്ചു
തള്ളിക്കളയേണ്ട ഒരു കാര്യം , വേണമെങ്കില്‍ പത്രാധിപര്‍ക്കൊരു കത്തും കൊടുക്കാം,

എങ്ങനെയാക്കിയെടുത്തു നമ്മുടെ ഒന്നാം കിട പത്രങ്ങളും മാധ്യമങ്ങളും. പട്രസംമെലനം
വിളിച്ചു കൂട്ടി അദ്ദേഹം ജനങ്ങളുടെ മുന്നില്‍ പോട്ടിക്കരഞ്ഞില്ലേ? സ്വന്തം
കാര്യം നോക്കി കഴിയുന്ന തന്റെ ഭാര്യയെ കുറിച്ച് പോലും അപവാദപ്രചരണം നടത്തി
എന്നദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ , അതെ മാധ്യമാക്കാര്‍ തന്നെ പല്ലിളിച്ചു പിടിച്ചു
ഇരിക്കുന്നതും നമ്മള്‍ കണ്ടതല്ലേ? ഇന്ന് ദേശാഭിമാനിയെ വിമര്‍ശിക്കുന്ന ആരെയും

A mistake is a mistake and there is no point in debating on this. News that
goes to the front page is not just a sub-editor's mistake. It goes through
several hands at least. Deshabhimani had the courage to admit it and provide
the corrected version. The courage came from the fact that, it was not a
deliberate act, but an error. To err is humane. The reason why, other
Malayalam dailies never admit to their fault is that, they do it purposely.

following the Hindu's lead, only corrects grammar mistakes and the likes.

That is a feeble point to make. Translation is a major work in the central
desk. May be editing and rewriting news stories from other centres also. But
as the media industry extensively relies on agency takes, the translation is
a daily exercise. The banner of a working class news paper doesn't insulate
them from knowing the source language and the target language. An editor's
desk is not an ideal place to post such a person. The same person might be
good in reporting. Posting the right person in the right position is the
key.

Its likely, especially when looking back to the track record of Deshabhimani
and its employee relations. But should such a mistake be spared? It will
create a bad precedence, if you take no actions. Then the employees would
think, anybody can make any mistake, and if it is found out, the News Paper
would apologise. Eventually, the credibility will be at stake.

may be. may be not. that doesn't make any difference. When in doubt, cut it
out is the golden rule of journalism. At least, he should have thought that
a man cannot finish eating one dog's meat in the prescribed time, let alone
68. And could even the late Rappai do so? There is more to common sense,
than to any preoccupied class sense.

Now that is a valid point. But can the journalists be equated with the old
school of blue collar working class? Do the same sort of working class exist
as it did at the time of communist manifesto? The mode of employee-employer
relations have changed. Classes have merged and reformed. There is as much a
capitalist in a laborer as there is a proletariat in a capitalist. The
production line has changed all.

Chengara and Lalgarh are two different issues. There is no point in mixing

i am no great fan of 'deshabhimani.' and, its not a newspaper i'd like to see 
first thing in the morning.

 

yet 


i don't think this is any 'strategy,' but a sub editorial 'mandatharam,' that 
merits inclusion in journalism text books. hope at least some of green youth 
members have heard about the famous '100 sleepers were washed away,' news. 
according to the version i have heard in my journalism class, the blunder 
happened to a sleepy sub editor in kerala kaumudi, years back, during the days 
of teleprinter news service. 

 

the sub in charge of night duty got this news about '100 sleepers washed away,' 
the guy excitedly translated the news into a front page screaming headline in 
malayalam, something like 'urangikkidakkunna nooru per olichu poyi' which 
means, '100 people who were sleeping were washed away in the rain and floods.' 
in fact, the 'sleepers' in question were 'railway sleepers,' in some north 
indian village or town. the next morning, the sub woke up to find the screaming 
headline in his own newspaper alone and the real story, in a small single 
column in inner pages, in all others. the story goes that the guy never set 
foot in the office again, send his resignation letter by post and left for 
bombay or delhi ! 

 

another 'funny' story - malayala manorama once reported the death of g.a.menon, 
founder and chairman of toonz animation, of a cardiac arrest in a los angeles 
bound flight from singapore. the manorama story contained a tearful description 
of how his son, who was sitting in the next seat, never realised his father had 
slipped into the final sleep until he tried to wake him up for getting off the 
plane, so on and so forth. 

 

the next day, along with the news of his burial in the us, the manorama carried 
a small 'correction,' which said that mr. menon's son was not with him in the 
flight ! some sub editor who happened to think that mr. menon's son was in the 
flight, got his fancy unfurled ! 

 

and, nothing to tell of the arun nayar - liz hurley hullabaloo. when the model 
and small time star liz hurley and the Uk-punjabi business man arun nayar's 
engagement was announced, manorama decided immediately that arun nayar was a 
malloo nair and the headline read, 'hollywood nadi malayalathinte 
marumakalaakunnu..' (hollywood actress to become kerala's daughter-in-law.' 
this time, no 'correction' was ever found.

One more example you missed Rasheed. You should have asked this to Damodar.
When Dr. Binayak Sen was arrested for "anti- state" activities, lot of Human
Right activists made noises( With International support). When Pinarayi
Vijayan was harassed by CBI ( for saving the State from "darkness"), no
human right activists - except Madhvan Kutti, and some support from Canada)
came for his rescue:)

Hello Fatima,
The pedantic tone of your advise makes me ask just two questions. You may
have very inconvienient answers, I know. Pls. let us know it anyway:
1. We keep silent on issues
Which are those issues on which a raising of voice is required? Is this
silence restrcited to this domain or were you speaking about a broader
domain of media?
2. ..Eversince barking at left...
Do you mean CPI(M)? or Left in a very generic sense? Does it include many
new mobilizations perhaps not under a particular party banner by name CPI or
CPIM?
3. The kind of hierarchy...
Pls. let us know the priority of issues to be debated. That makes it more
convienient for enabling a discussion than making some generalized remark

That said, there was no reason to blow out of proportion a clerical mistake
of desabhimani .

Our participants are in hurry to grill Deshabhimani for a clerical mistake!
A mistake in translation, that in ways not going to affect any of us. But we
keep silent on issues which are really important to us. Its very convenient
for many of us to simply sit and make comments on this kinds of issues ever
since barking at left has become a fashion and convenient job. The kind of
hierarchy of criticism that we construct here is very problematic.

I dont think that making goat a dog is a crime in translation!

Hope these comrades who defend "Left' left and right will ensure that the
subeditor who translated the story would not be harassed by the management
for this silly mistake.  This is important given the poor history of "Left"
controlled media management in employee harassment. Poor journos in Kerala
may not have the option to approach the Human Rights Commissions also:)

*ഹൈ ടെക്  കള്ളനും തേങ്ങാ കള്ളനും.*
 ഞങ്ങളുടെ നാട്ടില്‍ പഞ്ഞ കര്‍ക്കിടകക്കാലത്ത്
രാത്രി കള്ളന്മാരിറങ്ങും.അത്യാവശ്യം വാഴക്കുല, പുറത്തു മറന്നു വച്ച് പോയ
പാത്രങ്ങള്‍ അങ്ങിനെ അങ്ങിനെ അത്യാവശ്യം കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ പട്ടിണി മാറ്റാന്‍
വേണ്ട സാധനങ്ങള്‍ മാത്രം മതി ആ പാവം കള്ളനു. എന്നാല്‍ പലപ്പോഴും നാട്ടുക്കാര്‍
പിടികൂടി കൈ വച്ച് വിടുകയും ചെയ്യാറുണ്ട് താനും ,അതോടെ അവന്‍ നാട്ടിലെ
അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന കള്ളനായി. പിന്നെ ഏതു കളവു നടന്നാലും ഇവനായിരിക്കും പ്രതി.അങ്ങനെ
ഇണങിയും പിണങ്ങിയും ഉള്ള ഒരു ബന്ധമായിരിക്കും ഇവനും സമൂഹവും തമ്മില്‍.
 ഇതില്‍ നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തന്‍ ആണ് ഹൈ ടെക്
കള്ളന്‍. അത്യന്താധുനിക ഉപകരണങ്ങളുമായി വന്നു നമ്മളുടെ കുടുംബം അടിയോടെ
മാന്തുന്നവനാനവന്‍. നമ്മള്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും പ്രശ്നം ഉണ്ടാക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുമെന്ന്
സംശയം തോന്നിയാല്‍ മതി നമ്മെ കുടുംബത്തോടെ ഉന്മൂലനം ചെയ്യാനും അവനു മടിയില്ല.
  ഇതില്‍ ആരാണ് വലിയ കള്ളന്‍, രണ്ടുപേരും
കള്ളന്മാര്‍ തന്നെ എന്നാല്‍ രണ്ടു പേരോടും ഉള്ള നമ്മുടെ മനോഭാവത്തിനു
മാറ്റമുണ്ട്.
 ഇത്രയും പറയാന്‍ കാരണമുണ്ട്. ഇന്നത്തെ
ദേശാഭിമാനിയിലെയും മലയാള മനോരമയിലെയും മുന്‍ പേജ് വാര്‍ത്തയാണ്
പ്രശ്നം.ദേശാഭിമാനിയിലെ പട്ടിവാര്‍ത്ത തന്നെ. ശരിയാണ്, ലേഖകന് പറ്റിയ അമളി
അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ വിവരക്കേട് തന്നെ , സംശയമില്ല. ഇനി മനോരമയിലേക്ക്. ലാവലിന്‍ പി.ബി
യാണ് പ്രശ്നം. ഹെദ്ദിംഗ് ഞാന്‍ ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നില്ല. എങ്കിലും ഇതാണ് ഞാന്‍
ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കുന്നത്. വി.എസ്. പറഞ്ഞു "വിജയ
." വി എസ് പറഞ്ഞ വാചകങ്ങള്‍ അതേപടി
നല്‍കിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഒന്നല്ല രണ്ടു വാചകങ്ങള്‍. ഈ ലേഖകന്‍ പി.ബി മെമ്പര്‍ അല്ല
എന്ന് നമുക്കൊക്കെ അറിയാം. പിന്നെ ഈ വി എസിന്റെ വാചകങ്ങള്‍ എവിടുന്നു കിട്ടി,
അദ്ദേഹം ഭാവിക്കുന്നത്, പി.ബി അംഗങ്ങളില്‍ ആരോ ചോര്‍ത്തി കൊടുത്തു എന്നാണു.
പക്ഷെ നമുക്കറിയാം, വി എസ് അല്ലാതെ മറ്റാരും ഇത് ചെയ്യാന്‍ പി.ബിയില്‍
ഇല്ലെന്നു. പക്ഷെ അദ്ദേഹം ഇത് ചെയ്യില്ലെന്നും കേരളതുകാര്‍ക്കറിയാം. പിന്നെ
ലേഖകന് ഈ വാചകങ്ങള്‍ എവിടുന്നു കിട്ടി.ഹൈ ടെക് കള്ളന്റെ കളി കണ്ടോ? നമ്മള്‍
സംശയിക്കില്ലായിരുന്നു, പക്ഷെ നമുക്കറിയാം ഏതൊരു കള്ളനും  തന്നെ പിടികൂടാനയി
ഒരു തുമ്പ് അവശേഷിപ്പിക്കും എന്ന്. അത് ഇവിടെയും നടന്നു. പി.ബിയുടെ വായില്‍
ബാലാനന്ദന്‍ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടും ഒക്കെ കയറ്റിവിട്ടു. അതൊക്കെ പലപ്രാവശ്യം പൊട്ടി
തീര്‍ന്ന പടക്കമായതുകൊണ്ട് നമുക്ക് പെട്ടെന്ന് കാര്യം പിടികിട്ടി.
  അപ്പോള്‍ ഹൈ ടെക് കള്ളനും തേങ്ങാ കള്ളനും പിടി കിട്ടിയില്ലേ
സുഹൃത്തുക്കളെ. തെങ്ങക്കള്ളനെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യാനും കൈ വയ്ക്കാനും എളുപ്പമാണ്
ആരും ചോദിക്കാനും പറയാനുമില്ല.കൊമ്രെട്സ് പിണ്ടികെട്ടു എന്നോ എന്ത്
വേണമെങ്കിലും വിളിക്കാം. പക്ഷെ മറ്റവനെ സൂക്ഷിച്ചു കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യണം.
തട്ടിക്കളയാനും മടിക്കില്ല അവന്‍.
