[hlds] TF2 update coming later today

2008-03-06 Thread Eric Smith
We're planning to ship a mandatory TF2 server/client update later today.
We'll have the list of changes for you when the update is ready.

There are a few items (below) we're working on that won't be ready for
the release today. We're aware of these issues and are working to have
them fixed for the next update.

- SourceTV issues (port/connection problems, and servers with
maxplayers 32)
- mp_timelimit not functioning correctly on custom maps
- FCVAR_NOTIFY broken on Linux servers

We'll be doing some work to educate players on the new Custom servers
tab, using both PR and user interface changes. Now that the
Internet/Custom servers system is in place, we'd like server admin to
work within it. We'll be delisting servers with custom rule sets that
deliberately work around the system.

RE: [hlds] TF2 update coming later today

2008-03-06 Thread Andrew Armstrong
Hi Eric,

Has it been considered that the Custom tab simply filters the Internet tab?
And let the Internet tab keep all servers (ie, servers always appear in the
Internet tab).

Otherwise now people need to look in two places to find a group of servers
they may play on.

Regards,
Andrew

I think it means that they'll be delisting servers with custom rules
sets that deliberately work around the system.

But that's just a guess on my part.

Unfortunately we can tell you from many years of experience it doesn't
matter how much PR or education you put behind something like this,
it simply wont work as gamers are:-
1. Lazy
2. Creatures of habit
3. Quite stupid

As I previously mentioned this is from bitter experience with Epic's
failed attempt at a similar feature which was very much simpler, a
tick box for Standard servers only that was selected by default.

We look forward to the changes you propose to the UI and hope this
takes into account the information we have all provided since its
release.

In short creating a single search interface which allows users to
quickly and easily filter servers from a default show all list is
the only option. Splitting XYZ servers over here and the rest over
there is simply too confusing / complicated for your average joe.

As an annalogy, you dont see Google only listing XHTML compliant web
pages in their main search and forcing users to go another page to
search all none conforming sites. Yes XHTML compliant sites will
likely provide a better more consitent user experience, but when it
all comes down to it 99% of users simply dont care. They want to
sample whats out there, if they try something and it doesnt work
for them they will go somewhere else.

RE: [hlds] TF2 update coming later today

2008-03-06 Thread Spencer 'voogru' MacDonald
I think we have to see the new UI changes first.

If they do not solve the issues, I think a very large protest is in order
along with graphs showing what happens to servers that get put on the custom
tab.

To valve:

Without people running servers, you have no game.

Also, I'd like to see a solution for my standard TWENTY FOUR player server
that's flagged with the increased_maxplayers tag due to having 25 slots to
accept connections for reserved slots. I wonder if SourceTV has the same
effect.

Do I need to run a 23 player server now? Wonderful.

I think the server tags thing can be made much nicer if the 'server tags'

Don't know why you have alltalk on, but if you turn it off you server is in
the normal list again and your server is again full for the whole day. I
had the same problem. I was in the custom list. But after a Sunday of trail
and error, my server was back in the normal list. The next day and forward
where always 10 hours straight 24 players on the server.

If your really worrying you server.. put it back to the normal list. Your

I agree with this. There is already a filtering mechanism on the Internet
tab. Why not just keep one tab and add the tags thing to the existing
filters? This is how I imagined the tags would be implemented when it was
first introduced and still makes the most sense to me.

I think the server tags thing can be made much nicer if the 'server tags'
box was simply moved to the Internet tab, just allowing it as an extra
filter.

We'll be doing some work to educate players on the new Custom servers
tab, using both PR and user interface changes. Now that the
Internet/Custom servers system is in place, we'd like server admin to
work within it. We'll be delisting servers with custom rule sets that
 deliberately work around the system.

Everything needs to be moved to one tab with it defaulting to showing
everything.

Then let the player decide to filter out servers all on his own.

This works both ways, the player that actively looks for a vanilla server,
will find one easy.
The player that just wants to find any server to play on, will find one
easy.

I doubt valve is even reading any of these messages, but if they are and
they intend to put servers to a custom tab hardly anyone will see for any
little change, expect a huge backlash because of it and expect that you'll
have to spend more time solving the problem while making server
administrators angry, or worse, taking down their servers and moving to
other games.

And about the delisting...

If I programmatically strip the increased_maxplayers tag from my 24
player
server and get delisted because of it, I won't be too happy.

I was excited about the tags when they were first announced, it's too bad
they have turned it into something quite lame with the 'secondary' list.

And what about the primary list outside of the game? Do these show all
servers or just servers that are vanilla?

I agree with this. There is already a filtering mechanism on the Internet
tab. Why not just keep one tab and add the tags thing to the existing

Yes, having SourceTV on your xserver adds an extra slot. That DOES add it to

Wonderful.

of PR is going to change that.

Please take our concerns seriously. It is ok to second guess an idea that

We won't think any less of you for listening to the general public. ButI

This so-called PR and education effort is a barely noticeable url on the custom
tab page. Therefore, a user is not get pr'ed or educated if they don't even
click on the custom tab in the first place and from experience, they don't. The
custom tab is practically useless against non vanilla TF2 servers running mods
that do not change any of the watched cvar, for example, sudden death melee,
ammo/medpaks drops.

hahah server Apartheid that's awesome.

Its like server Apartheid. Why is it so hard to put everyone in one list
and let the player decide? This is ridiculous.

Everything needs to be moved to one tab with it defaulting to showing
 everything.

Then let the player decide to filter out servers all on his own.

This works both ways, the player that actively looks for a vanilla
 server,
 will find one easy.
The player that just wants to find any server to play on, will find one
 easy.

I doubt valve is even reading any of these messages, but if they are and
they intend to put servers to a custom tab hardly anyone will see for
 any
little change, expect a huge backlash because of it and expect that
 you'll
have to spend more time solving the problem while making server
administrators angry, or worse, taking down their servers and moving to
 other games.

 And about the delisting...

If I programmatically strip the increased_maxplayers tag from my 24
 player
server and get delisted because of it, I won't be too happy.

I was excited about the tags when they were first announced, it's too
 bad
they have turned it into something quite lame with the 'secondary' list.

And what about the primary list outside of the game? Do these show all
servers or just servers that are vanilla?

I agree with this. There is already a filtering mechanism on the
 Internet
tab. Why not just keep one tab and add the tags thing to the existing
filters? This is how I imagined the tags would be implemented when it
 was
first introduced and still makes the most sense to me.

 Yeah.

I think the server tags thing can be made much nicer if the 'server

 filter.

We'll be doing some work to educate players on the new Custom servers
tab, using both PR and user interface changes. Now that the
Internet/Custom servers system is in place, we'd like server admin to
work within it. We'll be delisting servers with custom rule sets that
 deliberately work around the system.

Yes XHTML compliant sites will
likely provide a better more consitent user experience, but when it
all comes down to it 99% of users

RE: [hlds] Team Fortress 2/Dedicated Server updated

2008-03-06 Thread Spencer 'voogru' MacDonald
I think it would be better to protest the two lists and have everyone add
protest to their sv_tags.

Use valves own system against them when they start getting spam from all of
the newbies complaining that they only see a few servers.

If every server implements their own tags, all of the players will just have
to start using the custom tab and it will just make the people who don't
know what they are doing go complain to valve and valve will have lots of
fun with that.

I think it'll work great.

Yeah that would work great... But only 10 people will do this. Servers
already on the Custom Tab don't count of course.

I recently got regulars from my server adding me to friends and asking me
why I have shut down the server, when it will be back up and if it will be
back up. Sadly to say it seems like most people are retarded. If they can't
use the favorites tab then how can they learn to use the custom tab? I'm
still baffled as to how they were able to add me to friends yet not able to
find my server on the Custom Tab...

Not amused :(

2008-03-06 Thread Kitteny Berk

Sounds like a plan to me.

Other option of course is what we had to do to get anticheat in CoD2 a
few years ago; turn our servers off for 24 hours.

These changes are screwing everyone, Forcing us to use totally stock
settings (which aren't quite right, IMO) or have our servers put where
no-one will see them.

Seems a bit like valve are cutting their nose off to spite their face here.

Personally, I'm getting a bit pissed off with it, as much as I like
TF2, I'm about ready to kill my servers and give the resources to CoD4
- A groundbreaking game with a 5 year old server browser that does
everything valve are trying to, and lets me set the game up how I like.

/Rant

Use valves own system against them when they start getting spam from all of
the newbies complaining that they only see a few servers.

If every server implements their own tags, all of the players will just have
to start using the custom tab and it will just make the people who don't
know what they are doing go complain to valve and valve will have lots of
fun with that.

I think it'll work great.

Remove the custom tab, add the server-tags and the filter-options into the
internet tab and everything would be fine ... people are intelligent enough
to check this server has no tags, it must be a standard one

the current system is absolutely useless!

Do you mean the server browser which cannot handle all servers at the same
time? Currently we have the COD4 patch 1.5 and there are still problems to
see all servers without refreshing 1000 times.

Best regards
