Good lazy Friday question! ;-D

In theory, yes, in fact any storage medium (CD/DVD/etc) will do. The trick is
of course, how and in what format do you want to load and unload your data. It
also depends what type of recovery do you want to do.

What are you using to copy your data to/from your stick?

(Currently we have the catastrophe recovery system in 3590 tapes in a bank
safe, but it can be also in my pocket in an USB stick ).

In a bank safe? If you need these tapes in a hurry at 02h59 local time, will
the bank co-operate?

Yes

Ok, seriously: Define recovery backup z/OS system.
What kind of recovery do you want to perform?
Even IPL-able USB stick containing whole system and applications and
data is not a complete solution. What about IOCDS?

Note: z/OS cannot be booted from neither USB stick, nor DVD, nor tape.
Period. It is possible to boot standalone program from DVD or tape, or
(maybe) USB stick. That's how COD (driver) works: you can start
standalone program from DVD and restore 3390 images from DVD.

I would prefer to have not so standalone z/OS image on few already
restored 3390 volumes - it solves 90% possible problems. Remaining 10%
consist of 99% - disaster (standalone program is unusable) and 1% some
weird cases. ;-)

Re: Creating .xls on z/OS

2012-09-14 Thread McKown, John
Supposedly, but I haven't actually tried. Look at:
http://poi.apache.org/
quote
The Apache POI Project's mission is to create and maintain Java APIs for
manipulating various file formats based upon the Office Open XML standards
(OOXML) and Microsoft's OLE 2 Compound Document format (OLE2). In short, you
can read and write MS Excel files using Java. In addition, you can read and
write MS Word and MS PowerPoint files using Java. Apache POI is your Java Excel
solution (for Excel 97-2008). We have a complete API for porting other OOXML
and OLE2 formats and welcome others to participate.

OLE2 files include most Microsoft Office files such as XLS, DOC, and PPT as
well as MFC serialization API based file formats. The project provides APIs for
the OLE2 Filesystem (POIFS) and OLE2 Document Properties (HPSF).

Office OpenXML Format is the new standards based XML file format found in
Microsoft Office 2007 and 2008. This includes XLSX, DOCX and PPTX. The project
provides a low level API to support the Open Packaging Conventions using
openxml4j.

For each MS Office application there exists a component module that attempts to
provide a common high level Java api to both OLE2 and OOXML document formats.
This is most developed for Excel workbooks (SS=HSSF+XSSF). Work is progressing
for Word documents (HWPF+XWPF) and PowerPoint presentations (HSLF+XSLF).

The project has recently added support for Outlook (HSMF). Microsoft opened the
specifications to this format in October 2007. We would welcome contributions.

There are also projects for Visio (HDGF), TNEF (HMEF), and Publisher (HPBF).

As a general policy we collaborate as much as possible with other projects to
provide this functionality. Examples include: Cocoon for which there are
serializers for HSSF; Open Office.org with whom we collaborate in documenting
the XLS format; and Tika / Lucene, for which we provide format interpretors.
When practical, we donate components directly to those projects for
POI-enabling them.

Re: SMF Dataset CLOSE PENDING ISSUE

2012-09-14 Thread William Richardson
General note . Close Pending status for an SMF dataset is actually fairly
normal but should NOT persist for very long. It basically means that SMF is
still writing data out to that physical dataset but has logically reached the
end of the file and is collecting/targetting its current input data to the
'next' dataset (which in this case there is none - which I suspect might have
been the source of the issue).

Second note .. you really should have procedures in place on the system to
dump and CLEAR SMF datasets as soon they become FULL - you should never
really have SMF datasets that are in dump required state. That's system data
that has been collected and is just sitting there not being used for its
intended purpose. IF for some reason there is no actual need for the data then
just make sure to CLEAR the datasets as they become FULL.

Third general thing . Close Pending is USUALLY an indication of a
thru-put performance iusse with SMF - that is, the data is being collected as a
FASTER rate than it is being physically written out to the SMF dataset. In
most cases there might be a data spike that causes this sort of behavior
instead of a sustained data rate issue; the other possiblity to consider is an
I/O (performance) issue with the physical SMF dataset itself.

Finally, as has already been noted if the problems persists then contact
IBM Service.

You might also see if .ods spreadsheets would be acceptable. A quick qoogle
search turns up lots of information about creating them. Here is one:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/web/library/wa-odf/

.ods is the native spreadsheet format for OpenOffice, Libre Office and others.

dataset but has logically reached the end of the file and is
collecting/targetting its current input data to the 'next' dataset

 source of the issue).

Interesting to know about CLOSE PENDING. But I don't understand the explanation
because, in the past, I have had all my SMF data sets fill up. In that case,
SMF started buffering in memory and the last used MAN data set was DUMP
REQUIRED. This was before I had CA-OPS/MVS issuing a command to start the STC
which would dump the switched from MAN data set. It is also why I have a
spare MAN data set already defined and EMPTY so that I can add a new one
quickly. IIRC, I had to do this one time when SMF records were being created
faster than they could be written to disk so every MAN data set filled up and I
couldn't empty the fast enough.

Second note .. you really should have procedures in place on the

I agree. I used to have an IEFU29 exit, but found it easier to use a CA-OPS/MVS
rule to start the dump process.

I was thinking that a hardware RESERVE on the volume containing the MAN data
set from a different z/OS system might cause this. I have converted most of the
hardware RESERVEs into GRS global ENQs.

I'm not sure, but looking at
http://support.sas.com/rnd/base/ods/templateFAQ/Excel1.pdf
quote
There are several methods of generating Excel or spreadsheet files using the

destination to
create the Excel or spreadsheet files. When you specify a procedure or data
step within
the ODS HTML statement with the .XLS or .CSV extensions, Microsoft Excel is
opened
in the Results Viewer. Excel is not an ODS destination and the fact that the
file is opened
in Excel is partially a product of ODS. The Results Viewer attempts to open the
file
based on the files registered extensions. By default the registered extensions
of .XLS and
.CSV belong to Excel on the PC.

it appears to me that SAS must be running on MS-Windows to generate a .xls

John,

I have used ODS in SAS and you can generate the XLS into a PDSE file that is
then send (via email or other FTP to a site) very easily.

From the ODS manual

With ODS, you can produce tabular output , which can be viewed with Excel.

Walter - I have recently completed development of a COBOL and Assembler
compatible API that allows the creation of full fidelity .xls and .xlsx
spreadsheets. Below is a summary of supported functions.

Full unicode support
Ebcdic (all code pages) to unicode
Packed, binary integers, ibm hex float
Row oriented data insertion
Cell oriented data insertion
Jpeg, bmp image support
Formulas
Multiple tabs
Lots more

I also have a simple control card driven utility (built on the api) that allows
a sequential file to be placed in a .xls or .xlsx format.

I also have many sample COBOL and assembler programs for usage examples.

There is no dependency on any third party products. No need for Java. The
.xls and .xlsx file can be binary downloaded and opened directly by excel.

Re: loading cryptographic coprocessor key part registers

2012-09-14 Thread Rob Schramm
Frank,

I would strongly recommend a checklist style with places for initials
for each of the MK holders.

Naming conventions - Your naming convention takes care of the test
v.s. prod.. which is good. But how do you handle migrating from one
key to another. Example. KEY1 is in use, KEY2 is the one that you
have to switch to... Depending on what you are using the key for ...
you may need both or need to replace the contents of KEY1 with KEY2
(think session keys... not data base encryption) The whole key
management thing can make things difficult.

Personally, I agree with separating test and production. However, you
may find that there are some keys (think PKDS) that have to be the
same in test and production.

As previously discussed the ability to move keys from one PKDS to
another using the KEYXFER tool is dependent on the MK being the same.
Not to say that I think having the same MK for test and production is
a good idea I would not recommend it it is just a reminder
that you may need to consider other options if the key needs to be the
same in both places.

The security for keys will be made much easier if you keep them
separated name-wise. You will regret choosing the same name for
test and production (only seems like a good idea... but your security
folks will stage a revolt ... tar and feathering may be involved.) I
am making an assumption that the security rules / security data base
being the same between test and production. I am personally a fan of
doing things one way. Centralizing databases and rules means that
even if you make a mistake.. and production ends up in test for
example ... then the same rules are always in effect.

Additionally, I would suggest implementing some of the newer controls
for CSFKEYS which allow for a bit more granularity that the old method
of READ or NONE.

Also, I would consider using the Protected key if performance is a
consideration. This topic has been discussed at some length on this
list.

Are you running more than one production LPAR that is going to share keys?

I have personally been thru a conversion from using Thales security
modules to using the Crypto Express cards. It is awesome.

Re: Creating .xls on z/OS

2012-09-14 Thread Lizette Koehler
John,

Not truly my area of expertise. I know it works. But from the z/OS
Companion for SAS has a description.

The SAS Output Delivery System can be used to generate graphical reports of
your SAS data. Remote browsing enables you to view your output directly from
the SAS session, either in real time as the output is generated, or on
demand from the Results window. Remote browsing displays ODS output that is
generated to z/OS native data sets (sequential, PDS, or PDSE) or a UFS
directory. HTML, PDF, RTF, and XLS file types are displayed with the remote
browsing system. If your browser does not have the appropriate plug-in for
non-HTML data types, it will display a download dialog box rather than the
actual data. This dialog box will enable you to download the report to your
PC and view it using a local program, such as Excel for an XLS file.

Note: When images or graphics are written to az/OS native data set and
remote browsing is being used to view the output, the URL=NONE option should
not be used with the ODS statement. Using this option causes the HTML to be
written with incomplete filenames, and the remote browsing system is not
able to determine the location of the image or graphics. When this situation
occurs, the browser displays broken image icons in the HTML output.

You might find it helpful to save another software vendor's file to a DBF
file and then convert that file into a SAS data set. For example, you could
save an Excel XLS file in DBF format, upload the file, and use PROC DBF to
convert that file into a SAS data set. Or you could do the reverse; use
PROC DBF to convert a SAS data set into a DBF file and then load that file
into an Excel spreadsheet.

The process I have used is to generate an RTF file on the mainframe and then
using SAS EMAIL process, email that result. Then when my recipients open
the email, the RTF shows up in the Browser. I have seen several SAS papers
on Mainframe to Excel processes. SAS also has a Microsoft plugin that
allows you to use SAS to extract the data you want while in Excel prior to
allowing Excel to present the data. Basically you write the output from SAS
in a different format (XLS, RTF, HTML, PDF, RTF) to an HFS or PDSE file (I
have not worked with ODS with other file types). And it works.

I do not know how the ODS engine works to make the magic happen.

If you would like a sample SAS code, write me offlist and I will share.

Lizette

Thanks for the correction. That is a real XLS file, not just a file
which can be opened
in Excel (like CSV can be opened in Excel)?

Willie, Please open an issue with Level 1 support. We need to determine how the
particular volume(s) is being retained. Just changing the KEEPDATE may not
change the retention if the volume is retained by another retention method,
catalog control for example.

Re: loading cryptographic coprocessor key part registers

2012-09-14 Thread Rob Schramm
Frank,

That is not true. Try option k. But the only reason you would need
it would be if you need to store the operational key parts outside of
the mainframe. Also, KGUP should support key part entry... although
it is one of the oldest interfaces for ICSF. Auto generating keys is
probably be the best if the keys are not required outside of the
mainframe. Although you should be able to leverage a transport key or
temporary session key if you need to exchange the key.

The problems are that the management of the operational key parts are
not really being managed outside of some interface like TKE or DKMS.

TKE can actually enforce the presence of multiple people for key
entry. DKMS has a whole host of ways of actually managing key
materials.

ICSF has an ISPF interface that you'll use to enter the key parts.

2012-09-14 Thread Pat Hughes1
Willie, CATINQR/TLMSINQR is the only supported PROC/Program in current
releases of TLMS (12.0 12.5). It has not been officially supported for the
majority of the TLMS reports and updated since release 5.5. It was provided
through release 12.0 to allow clients time to modify all their JCL. When TLMS
is upgraded to release 12.6, all JCL/PROCS referencing TLMSRPTS will receive a
S806 abend. If anyone is preparing to convert to release 12.6 and needs to
identify the use of obsolete programs, please contact Level I support. We will
supply a utility that will scan SMF Type 30 records to identify JOBS using

Supposedly, but I haven't actually tried. Look at:
 http://poi.apache.org/
 quote
The Apache POI Project's mission is to create and maintain Java APIs for
manipulating various file formats based upon the Office Open XML standards
(OOXML) and Microsoft's OLE 2 Compound Document format (OLE2). In short, you
can read and write MS Excel files using Java. In addition, you can read and
write MS Word and MS PowerPoint files using Java. Apache POI is your Java
Excel solution (for Excel 97-2008). We have a complete API for porting other
OOXML and OLE2 formats and welcome others to participate.

OLE2 files include most Microsoft Office files such as XLS, DOC, and PPT as
well as MFC serialization API based file formats. The project provides APIs
for the OLE2 Filesystem (POIFS) and OLE2 Document Properties (HPSF).

Office OpenXML Format is the new standards based XML file format found in
Microsoft Office 2007 and 2008. This includes XLSX, DOCX and PPTX. The
project provides a low level API to support the Open Packaging Conventions
 using openxml4j.

For each MS Office application there exists a component module that attempts
to provide a common high level Java api to both OLE2 and OOXML document
formats. This is most developed for Excel workbooks (SS=HSSF+XSSF). Work is
progressing for Word documents (HWPF+XWPF) and PowerPoint presentations
 (HSLF+XSLF).

The project has recently added support for Outlook (HSMF). Microsoft opened
the specifications to this format in October 2007. We would welcome
 contributions.

2012-09-14 Thread Pat Hughes1
All, the various solutions given are the reason I suggested the OP contact CA
Support. Since we have various solutions, and also the most important question,
WHY?, I will try to explain some parts of TLMS Retention processing.

1. VOLUME level KEEPDATE/EXPDT values (UPV) are not used by TLMS retention
processing, and only reflect the maximum KEEPDATE (determined at data set close
by TLMS) or EXPDT (determined by EXPDT=\RETPD= in JCL. These fields are not
updated by changes to data set KEEPDATE/ EXPDT updates by either TLMSTRS or
manual/online updates. However, the fields may be tested in User Exits and
reported upon using CA EARL.

2. Data set level EXPDT is only used by the retention system if there is no
Retention Master File entry that matches the data set name of the CDS
(Controlling Data Set).

3. Data set KEEPDATE will be used if the retention type assigned to the
controlling data set uses the KEEPDATE (Types 2,3,B,C).

3. The only certain solution is to use the UPV vv,SCHED= command. It will
never be changed by the Tape Retention System.

Re: Creating .xls on z/OS

2012-09-14 Thread Farley, Peter x23353
Martin,

I have no trouble with formulae in .csv, I do it all the time from Rexx on
z/OS. I will generate two calculation cells like this, for instance:

=IF(D20,(F2-D2), ),=IF(D20,(H2/D2), ),

I found that I have to surround the formula with double quotes (because of the
embedded spaces) and double any embedded double quotes for Excel to interpret
the CSV formula correctly and generate the calculated result. The above cells
look like this once the file is downloaded from z/OS to the PC and opened by
Excel:

=IF(D20,(F2-D2), ) =IF(D20,(H2/D2), )

HTH

There are many things which cannot be kept in .CSV: graphs, complex
formula, column formatting, page setup, multiple spreadsheets in one
file, etc. etc.

However I can't imagine which of the features have to be created on
mainframe side. Usually a mainframe dataset contains some data
(records), which can be easily converted to .csv file. In this case
there is no big sense to bother with .XLS details.
Of course the data can be a source for nice graph for CEO, but why to
create all the bell and whistles on z/OS side? I would look for some
tools on PC side.

Phony IBM press release from 1980 for Mainframe-Attached Toilet

2012-09-14 Thread Charles Mills
Here's a Friday topic if there ever was one. A friend who is cleaning out
his place just sent me a scan of a purported IBM DPD press release (on what
appears to be genuine DPD letterhead) from 12/11/1980 announcing the model
3082 Attached Toilet. (The 3082 is a multi-port, user-operated waste
removal system with continuous roll forms ... featuring NCP (Network Commode
Protocol).)

It's a PDF of a medium quality scan, about 500K.

If anyone wants a copy send me a private note: charlesm at mcn dot org.

Re: loading cryptographic coprocessor key part registers

2012-09-14 Thread Frank Swarbrick
Color me very confused.  Do you not agree with the following statement from
http://www-03.ibm.com/support/techdocs/atsmastr.nsf/WebIndex/PRS189?

Abstract:The ICSF, application key generation
utility, KGUP, does not provide the capability to enter keys using dual custody
of key parts. Without using a TKE Workstation there is no way to enter multiple
values that will be used to create a key value. If a TKE Workstation is not
desired nor required for any other reason, this working sample application
provides the ability to enter application keys under multiple custody from the
TSO terminal.

I can't get the K function to even do anything for me.  It either says CKDS
RECORD EXISTS and when I press ENTER again says KEY NOT FOUND, or, in the
case where the label in fact does not already exist it just says KEY NOT
FOUND and then says it again when I press enter.

From the documentation I'm looking at (Loading Operational Keys to the CKDS
in the TKE Workstation Guide) it doesn't even show any examples (that I can
see) of entering key components from this screen.

So I am lost.

In any case, we share operational keys with Visa and MasterCard, where they
create the key parts and send them to us (triple custody).  Would you agree
that this is a case where this is required.  Actually, I am referring to
transport keys (key exchange keys), not operational keys, so perhaps I am
going totally down the wrong path...?

TKE can actually enforce the presence of multiple people for key
entry.  DKMS has a whole host of ways of actually managing key
materials.

C and LE -- when prepend userid on file names?

No doubt this is wonderfully documented somewhere but I am sitting here
tearing my hair out.

I have a C++ *batch* program that I could not get to open a conventional
z/OS dataset by name to save my life until I finally figured out it was
prepending my userid onto the specified name a la TSO.

If I have encountered this behavior before and/or how to turn it on and off
I have forgotten. It sure does not jump out at me from the manuals.

IBM LE C running in batch: what determines whether it prepends your userid
onto a conventional z/OS dataset name?

Thanks!

Does this apply even outside TSO? Does LE read the TSO profile
data set to make the decision? I believe that in UNIX System

not surrounded by apostrophes with the user ID (not the defined
TSO prefix).

Try surrounding your data set name with apostrophes.

Not all the world is TSO.

Packed, binary integers, ibm hex float
 Row oriented data insertion

I also have a simple control card driven utility (built on the api) that

I also have many sample COBOL and assembler programs for usage examples.

There is no dependency on any third party products. No need for Java.
The .xls and .xlsx file can be binary downloaded and opened directly by

 Subject: Creating .xls on z/OS

 Hello all,

I've been asked if there is the possibility to create Excel tables (.xls)
 files on z/OS,
using a batch job. I've searched the archives, the developerwork IBM's
 site, redbooks,
 but found no clue.
We run the XMITIP tool which is able to create .csv files, but this seems
 not enough.

We are at z/OS 1.13, with Java 6.0.1, and Perl from the Ported Tools,
 1.2.0.

Any thoughts, experiences links, books ?
