Hey Richard,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. MP3 TAG on the
blind-computing.com site was the little program that did the trick.
I may even give a couple of the other programs you mentioned below a
try...I have learned more than I ever wanted to know about MP3 Tags in
the past two weeks, so I might as well keep learning. Right!

Thanks again.

Hi Kurtis,
Here's a couple of tips,
If you use CDEX to rip, you can specify which type of tag you want to
give
the file.
If you use WinAmp, you can edit the I D tags with it's tag editor.
Also, you can check the documentation for audio files at:
www.jaws-users.com
on the tips and tricks page, or the audio files page under the tips and

tutorials heading at:
www.blind-computing.com
I believe we have several tag editors on both sites.

Hi all,

I just want to say that this group is great. I often learn answers to

questions I didn't even know I had.

Now for the main reason for this post.

I am looking for a JAWS accessible program that can edit / convert MP3
tags
from IDV 1 to IDV 2.

The Stamp program that was posted here a couple of weeks ago was very
JAWS
accessible, but it did not quite stamp the genre correctly (at least
not in
the version 2 that I need).

Maybe there is a good CD ripping application that would also accomplish
this
task? I am open to any ideas or suggestions. The program doesn't even
have
to be free. I just want to get these MP3 tag problems figured out.

Okay, thanks for any help and keep up the awesome job of sharing
information.

Gold Wave is a fine program. In fact for the price which is around $50 it is
a wonderful application for everything audio. If you're not a professional
it will do everything you might need it for. Another tip is the next version
that is coming out will have multichannel capabilities. Also free life time
upgrades are included in the price.

[JAWS-Users] list memo

2007-05-30 Thread David Ferrin
The move will be very soon, between today and Friday if all goes according to
plan. I had a system crash the other night and still putting things back
together for the final touches. Thanks to my wife for helping out with the
membership list file from google with her skill using access the schedule looks
like it is still on track to go. Honestly I wouldn't have been able to work on
it when the system was completely gone the other night and needed reloaded from
nothing. It's not the entire way back up, but it's getting closer all of the
time. Unless somebody doesn't wish to move with the group I will simply
subscribe everybody who is on here right now to the new service myself because
it seems that would be the easiest for all concerned to do it that way. You'll
receive complete instructions for posting ETC, The audio on mail man might be a
bit slower in coming do to the previously mentioned system crash as those
things take quite a while to record and edit. I thank you all for making this
list a success and for the patients during this time of transition. Questions
concerns ETC should be directed using the form mentioned at the bottom of this
message. I'm still typing my signatures manually as they aren't even put back
in as of yet. Computers are supposed to make our lives easier, I'm still
waiting for that some days. They do things that we as blind people wouldn't be
able to do other wise, but there are days.

[JAWS-Users] guide lines

2007-03-26 Thread David Ferrin
This list has just hit a mile stone, well at least in my opinion any how.
The membership is now right at 250 subscribers. So quite a number of people
have joined this month alone, and not knowing how many folks actually
subscribed from the guide lines page on the web site or not I'm posting them
here. Please read them, and if you have any questions at all there is a link
at the bottom of every message posted to the list that will take you to a
form for contacting all four moderators at the same time. Thank you all for
wishing to be a part of this little community.

***

Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The
purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader
Program.

So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what
software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better
with
scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be
requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we
all know
works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or
want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently.

Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact
instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It
creates
a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does.

The ideal place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that
everybody no matter how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers
will have
the confidence to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck
the list will be there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say
that
help is quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last
than first. So try it yourself first what ever it might happen to be. If you
get stuck then let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your
current dilemma. Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a
post
asking if there is a software package that does a specific task and works
well with JAWS is perfectly fine.

The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and
Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of
Freedom
Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then I suggest
you take it up with Freedom Scientific directly. Please try to keep subject
lines
relevant and descriptive as possible. Also any news letters except those
that directly pertain to JAWS should not be posted to the list prior to
receiving
moderator approval. Attachments should never be sent to the list at all for
any reason what so ever.

When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive
in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply
delete
messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are around 200
subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here.

Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines,
then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions
that
are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not
receive an answer for a number of reasons.

Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the
footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. There you
will
find the group web address along with some other relevant information
pertaining to contacting the management team ETC. It is very frustrating to
read
a post asking for the group’s web address when the very next line states
visit the JAWS Users List home page and the next line after that is the URL.

Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you
may receive an email from Google Groups asking you to reactivate your
account.
Please don’t simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the
directions to reactivate your account of course after making sure it is from
Google
Groups. If you don’t after receiving a number of such messages then we will
figure that you no longer wish to be a member of the list and remove your
email
address.

The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting or other such inappropriate activities. This is not a high tech
swap shop
or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services
will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is
off
topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does
not make it all right. Lastly please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes,
safety
tips, or pleas to help dying kids, should ever be forwarded to the list.

My hope is that this list will always be a place where everybody no matter
what their particular skill level can feel safe to ask any question at all
with
in the guidelines that I have set forth. It is my experience that such rules

If you are happy with 8.0 and have no plans on going back, then no you don't

Thanks David I found Jaws 5.1 in where you said, and found the enu folder.
Do I need 5.1 anymore, and if not how do I get it out of there?
I wonder how many programs I have that I don't need.
If I clean some out will that make my computer run faster?
I'm running Jaws 8 home and window xp

May be someone else on this list will write if they know how to go in to the
JAWS folders to initiate a repair. The only way I know how to do this, is
to put your 6.0 disk back in and start an installation. 1 or 2 steps in to
it, you will have a chance to click on Repair. Go ahead and click on Repair
and see if that helps.

Beyond this, I think you'll need to contact Freedom Scientific for help.

I hope it works out for you! Vicky V

I just wanted to post that it is in the middle of a rewrite at this time.
You will notice that the headings will be rearranged alphabetical but other

reason is the page has grown like the rest of the site much larger than I
expected and the directories are getting cluttered. I would also like to
announce that the home page has been hit over 7000 times since last March 17

should remain on my schedule of things to do. This list now has 241 members,

Lisa; try downloading the very latest version of JAWS as a demo and
 install
it, you can obviously try that to see how it works but then if you go back
to running the old version of JAWS it should have updated stuff like the
video intercept sufficiently to do the job.

  Hi Lisa,

Sounds like you have a couple of problems.
First off, support for Microsoft office 2007 starts with version 8 I
believe, so I do think your version is too old.
Secondly, these they have changed the entire layout for office 2007. It
think now they call them ribbons instead of tool bars or some such thing.
Someone else on here may be able to give you some extra tips, but I think
you'll need to upgrade your jfw to get maximum use out of your new
 programme.

  Hello everyone,
When I write letters I have always used the HJ pad, and I found it quite
easy to use. I recently purchased and installed Microsoft office student
and home adition 2007 on my computer. This includes Microsoft word which
 I
always wanted to have because I thought it would be better then the HJ
 pad.
I opened up a blank document in Word to write a letter, and I hit my alt
key, so I could have a look at the menues. All it said was home tab press
control tab to switch pages. I have never used Word 2003 with jaws, but a
friend told me that the menues are totally accessible with jaws. I am
running jaws 6, so I'm wondering if my version of jaws is too old for this
newest version of Microsoft Word, or has Microsoft totally changed the way
Word 2007 looks? When I rooted jaws to PC I didn't find things like file,
edit, view, tools, and format. If anyone could help figure this out i'd
really appreciate it!!! I have windows XP home adition, and I'm running
 jaws 6.
  Take care,
  Lisa ,

[JAWS-Users] the tips and tricks page

The revised version is up as of now folks. It has been changed around a
little compared to it's earlier self. The headings are now in alphabetical
order and some of them have been renamed as well. Also there are a couple
of new headings to mention. The most important to me is the heading for
outlook and outlook express since those files listed there apply to both
programs. I've done the same with the CD/DVD programs as well.

Hi Victor,
thank you for responding to my question. I now have a much clearer
understanding of what I'm dealing with. I purchased this program for my son
because he needed it to do his home work. He is sighted so this is no
problem for him. When I called places like best buy and circuit city to get
prices for this program I asked about Word 2003, and they told me that they
no longer sell that version. So I have a few choices here I can either
upgrade my jaws, continue using HJ pad for letter writing, or purchase a
copy of Microsoft Word 2003. I'm not sure what I'll do yet, but if I decide
to get Word 2003, do you know where I can buy a copy of that program? Again
thanks for your help!
Take care,
Lisa

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws and Microsoft Word 2007

  Hi Lisa,

I have a similar problem, or at least, I had a similar problem as you.

I was running Jaws 7 with Xp home, and installed Office 2007 as an upgrade
to my 2003.

If you think the menu items are screwed up, you ought to see how it
displays an already modified document.

According to my brother, 2007 displays almost like Internet Explorer 7,
with tabs and the like to navigate between multiple documents.

If you use the classic shortcut keys, such as alt-F or alt-T or other
shortcut keys that you use to access the old menu bars, you'll find that
they do work, however, they open a new set of menus.

The menus, as you've already heard, have been completely re-designed and
are called a ribbon, or an information ribbon, so some such name like that.

In any case, when I opened an already modified document, such as a user's
manual for my MP3 player, it displayed the multiple pages side by side, and
when I used the arrow keys to go through the document, it would read the
information on both sides of the window.

So, if the first line on page 1 was hello, and the first line on page 2
was goodbye, when I got there with the arrow, Jaws would read it as hello
goodbye.

Very confusing if you don't know what you're reading.

As I had already read the particular user's manual I opened, I knew what
the first page should say, and was confused when Jaws read something from
page two.

In any case, as was stated on another response to your question, you'll
have to upgrade to Jaws 8 to use Office 2007, or just keep trying to make
the current version of Jaws you have work with it. I wasn't able to do this
and had to uninstall 2007 and go back to 2003.

Unfortunately, I didn't have any time to play around with it as I needed
MS Word for work I was doing at the time, but if I had had more time, I
would have played around with it and tried to see if I could make it work
with earlier versions of Jaws.

The good news is that Office 2003 is very compatible with Jaws 8 and
lower, and I have had no problems using it.

In fact, I think you'll enjoy using it more than HJ Pad, and even more
than Office 2007.

I mean, comparing HJ Pad to Office 2003 is like comparing a farm wagon to
a Rolls Royce, the two are miles apart from each other in terms of what you
can do, but if you just want to write letters and the like, farm wagons
aren't that bad as letter writing goes, but if you can afford it, I would
definitely go for the Rolls Royce.

  Victor

[JAWS-Users] Re: Question about check disd

There should not be any problem unless you have a BIOS password, and I'm
pretty sure you don't. If you did then JAWS wouldn't talk you through the

Hello everyone,
This question is for Denny, or anyone else who can answer it. I was reading
the PC maintenance on the jaws users website, and I got to the check disd.
When I follow all of the steps it says I must restart my computer for the
check disc to run. It says that it will do the check disc before windows
starts up. I have my computer password protected, so I have to put in my
password before windows starts up. Will this interfear with running a check
disc? Should I follow those directions, or should I do something different
since my computer is password protected? I just wanted to clear this up
first, so I don't screw anything up. I just want to say thank you to Denny
for writing that PC maintenance page! The instructions are very easy to
follow.
Take care,
Lisa

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Tax Software

Hi All,

I have used tax software in the past as a sighted user to prepare my tax
return and file it online.

I realize that the software I use isn't available in the U.S., but I do know
that the company that makes the software I use also has software available
in the U.S.

The software I use is called Quicktax and is by Intuit, the makers of
Quicken and Will Expert.

Anyway, I have been told by them that I can't use Quicktax 2005 to prepare
my 2006 income tax return.

The unfortunate part of all of this is that the 2005 version was the most
compatible version I've used with Jaws since I went blind.

While this completely bums me out because I'm about to spend money on
another version of Quicktax without knowing if it's accessible with Jaws or
if they've made any advancements in making it accessible, I'm wondering if
anyone here uses a particular software package that works well with Jaws.

I know that Intuit also makes TurboTax, and I believe that this particular
tax software is available in the U.S., however, can anyone tell me how well
it goes with Jaws and how difficult it is to use?

Any responses would be welcome.

Thanks,

Victor

[JAWS-Users] Re: the wait seems to be over for everything to move

2007-03-07 Thread David Ferrin

Between 5 to 8 inches of snow right now, fortunately I have the power tools
to do the job. On the other hand there are some broken links up on the web
site that require my attention soon as possible, but since I'm not twins
things will get done probably when they get done and not much before that
time. I'm not complaining, it's for a good cause helping you folks out.

Oh heck, take time for 1 doughnut. How much shoveling can you have to do?
Won't it just melt in a day or 2 when spring arrives? Oh, if you are up
north, I guess you have 2-3 more months of winter left.

[JAWS-Users] file Encryption software

2007-03-07 Thread David Ferrin

It seems to me that recently somebody mentioned to me about a program that
can encrypt a data file. So does anybody out there have such capability? I
have those pass word storage programs up on the site, but I was looking for
the ability to pass word protect a file all by itself.

You might want to check-out:
http://www.truecrypt.org/
Using this software, you can setup an encrypted vault to store your file(s).
You can copy the vault onto a CD, thumbdrive or email the vault to someone.

It is totally Jaws accessible with no scripts. And best of all, it's free.

 There

[JAWS-Users] the web site

2007-03-02 Thread David Ferrin

Like I posted last evening, the site will be down for a day or two until all
of the DNS information gets transferred to where ever it needs to go. I'm
currently uploading all of the files to the new location as I possess the IP
address for that location. I don't see any point in posting that
information since it won't be of any use to anybody at all at the time when
everything catches up. So my email accounts may experience some brief
interruptions in service, but hopefully not for long. Other than that I'm
in the middle of a two hour upload, so it's off to read a book for a while.

Hi All

Using jaws 8 with windows xp on a lap top and I do have my keyboard set to
lap top. In outlook I know on the desk top computer you press insert and
the letter a to open an attachment. When you pres this key stroke on a
lap top it starts reading the E-mail. Does any one know of a lap top
command to open attachments. I have found a work around, I just shift tab
and this puts me on the attachment. I was just wanting to know if there is
a specific command. I have also looked under lap top commands in the help
files.

Hi Don,

I think you may want to give Win rar a shot also.

It's pretty cheap and it lets you compress entire folders, while keeping the
actual folder in the file, something that WinZip lacks.

It's completely Jaws friendly, from what I've seen of the program and I use
it quite a bit.

Anyway, I'm sorry I can't give you the web address for the program, however,
I'm sure that you can Google it without any problem.

Not sure what version of Outlook you are using, but here are instructions
for Outlook 2003.
Creating a distribution list in Outlook 2003.

1. Go to the address book, control shift b.
2. Do an alt f for file and press enter on, new entry.
3. Arrow down to, distribution list and press enter.
4. Type in the name of the distribution list. (Something you can identify
it with.) 5. Tab once to, select members and press your space bar.
6. It will say, type name or select from list. Tab one time to your list of
contacts.
7. Arrow down through your contacts and for each person you want in the
distribution list, press enter.
8. This will put you back in the, type name or select from list field, so
tab again to your contact list and arrow down to the next person you want to
add and press enter again. Repeat this process on each person you want
added.
9. You can tab a few times and see a list of the contacts you have added.
10. Once you have everybody added, tab to OK and press enter.
11. This will put you back on the, add members button. Press escape and say
yes, to, keep the changes?
12. You will now be in your list of contacts, so press escape to go back to
your inbox.
13. When sending a message to this distribution list, I would recommend
putting the name you gave your distribution list in the BCC field.

Tell your sister that Outlook does this a bit different. When she is
creating a new message and she's in the to field just start typing the
person's name in. She can either type part or all of it. Outlook will
fill it in automatically after she leaves the field. If there is more
 than
one match in the address book she will be prompted to choose which address
she wants once she goes to send the message. She can confirm what is in
 the
field by hitting the alt key and the # 3 key on the keyboard not the
 number
pad. Let me know if you have other questions.

 thanks

Patty,
Jaws 4.51 doesn't have the explore my settings.
I think that was added in version 6.
But what you can do Gabriel is, If you made the changes in your default
dictionary, you could do a windows find for the default.jdf file. Just make
sure that it is in the 4.51 Jaws enu directory that you are copying from.
Once you have found it, copy it to the clipboard and then like Patty said,
go to your program, Jaws 8, explore Jaws settings an finally to, Explore my
settings.
Here you can paste that file you have in the clipboard.
If the dictionary is something other than the default, then do a windows
find for, *.jdf and then select the dictionaries you want.

[JAWS-Users] Re: new programs

2007-02-22 Thread David Ferrin

Well first of all folks I'm not going to post a program on my web site that
is in any way harmful to your computer. Next of course each and every
program is going to be screen reader friendly as well. I mean think about
it for a minute what the name of the list and web site are called. Add to
that the fact I need JAWS myself in order to function with the computer just
like any other blind person. Like I said just think about it for a minute.

So far as what each program actually does I've tried to place a reasonable
description on the site as to what their function might happen to be. There
should be documentation included with virtually each and every program up
there, if not then let me know please. Certainly if you have the real speak
voices that shipped with JAWS 8 they are far superior to the Microsoft
voices. They are just up there so if a person only has Sam as their
computer's default voice they could have a choice of either Mike or Mary.
Personally of those I choose Mary myself.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Page up and Page down are not working

2007-02-22 Thread David Ferrin

I can't say for sure, but here's what I think for what it's worth. It most
likely has something to do with how your system is set to receive email
messages. I pick up mine as HTML where others might use plain text. Check
your settings out to see if that might make a difference.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] System Restore Help

Below is a friend of mine experiencing some problems locating how to do a
system restore. I copied from the web site the info listed but guess she's
still needing assistance and I am not sure just how to tell her to find her
system's restore feature.
Can anyone help please?

Hailley

Hi, I have windows xp pro and I guess the teck who set up this machine

didn't feel that I needed access to this function. I can't get into systems
tools, it only allows me access to internet explorer.

that is so weird, are you using xp? below is steps to locate the system's
restore feature provided you use xp which I guess I assumed you did..

Restoring your computer using System Restore, and Jaws.

This procedure was used successfully with Jaws 6.2, on an eMachine computer,
with an Intel 2.8ghz processor, 256mb ram, and 80gb hard drive, with the
display resolution set at 50% of the maximum available screen resolution,
and color pallet set at highest 32 bit.

1. From the system restore window, choose, restore my computer to an earlier
time, and tab to the next button, and press enter.

2. Use control home, to move to the top of the page, then arrow downuntil
you hear the current month and year. while arrowing down the page, you will
hear instructions for restoring your computer.

3. While the cursor is positioned on the current month, shift tab, and you
will be on the previous month button. if you want to see the restore points
in the previous month, press enter on the previous month button.

4. Follow the above steps to locate the month from which you want to select
a restore point from. Each time you select the previous month, or next
month, you can use the up and down arrow keys to move thru the text on the
selected page.

5. Once you have selected the month you want, from the available choices,,
arrow down the page until you hear the day of the week you want. This is
where a simple NotePad file of your restore points comes in handy. After
making a restore point, if you record this imformation in a file, you can
refer to it to see the exact date you want to restore to. This makes it
quicker to locate a restore point in the restore point calendar.

6. place your cursor on a day of the week, and then tab until you hear Jaws
read a restore point, and from here you can use your up and down arrow keys
to see the list of restore points on the page.

7. once you have found the restore point you want to use, tab to the next
button, and press enter.

8. Here you should get a confirmation page, so, start at the top of the
page, and arrow down to read the imformation.

9. If you are satisfied with your selection, then tab to the next button and
press enter. The system restoration should begin.

10. Do not disturb the computer during this process, your machine should
re-boot when the restore operation has been completed.

There may be a restore confirmation screen presented to you when the machine
re-boots, and you can okay this dialogue to close it, and resume using your
computer.

NOTE This is how the process went on the system mentioned above using one
particular version of Jaws, and does not reflect how Jaws will read the
imformation on every system.

[JAWS-Users] Re: JAWS and VISTA

2007-02-19 Thread David Ferrin

This absolutely does not belong on my list and further such bashing will not
be tolerated at all. The product is what it is and we have all decided to
use it in our daily living. The guide lines clearly state that there will
be no bashing of Freedom Scientific on here at all. If this door is left
open even once then the list will turn in to nothing more than a place for
people to moan and complain. Honestly I won't manage such a list at all and
neither will the other moderators. If anybody wants to create their own
list dedicated to bashing Freedom Scientific then feel free to do so, but it
will not happen on here I can promise you.

This list is going to be a positive place for people to learn and share
ideas, and that's the way it's going to be. If anybody doesn't like the
rules I've written then get off of here because you're not welcome.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and VISTA

Gripe for the day:

You know, I am pretty sick and tired of companies such as Freedom
Scientific, who don't keep up with the times or don't be ready when changes
come to technology. I recently downloaded Power DVD and some other software
under XP and they all are sending me plug-ins or fixes for Vista without
cost. I hwead a podcast from FS and they were saying they will be Vista
compatible soon, but it will cost us JAWS users to get the vista ready
version of jaws. I have JAWS Pro and it is more costly than the normal jaws
version. I am not sure how it works, but I think JAWS and Windoweyes and
any other screen reader programs should be upgraded by the sellers
regardless of the version at no cost to the users or purchasers of the
product--as we didn't change the OS, microsoft did, and that is who should
foot the bill for the change.

I have heard the complaining by Freedom Scientific and other accessability
vendors that it cost so much to make or create these products and they must
recover their cost and I don't buy their arguments--as every vender must do
the same and they don't pass the cost on to its users. Why should
accessibility venders be any different. They decide to go into the market
and should be willing to pay the cost of keeping up.

Also, with JAWS, I can't stand the thing about SMA (or that thing about
paying in advance for upgrades). My thinking is that I should pay for the
version I want--that is, if I have version 51, but don't want to upgrade
until version 8, I should be able to do that and only pay a one-time upgrade
fee, say $100 or $200 for the upgrade and nothing else. No one else I know
does such a thing as they do. I use to own Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 came
out recently, I didn't have to pay for theones in between. The same thing
with Power DVD. I have heard the reasons for the practice, but it does not
seem right.

I know I won't change the practice, but it needs to be stopped.

Finally, with the vista version, I heard FS people say that, in order to
get it, current JAWS 7 or lower users will have to buy version 8 and a
two-year service maintenance agree (or upgrade fee) to get it, but they
won't zap us with an upgrade charge--real big of them. For example, I have
version 71, but in order to get 8, I'd have to pay almost $600 for
everyting. I could just save my money and buy a full new copy of the
program.

Thanks very much for listening tome and I hope I haven't violated the list
rules by complaining.

James Robinson

[JAWS-Users] Re: glad to be on the list

2007-02-18 Thread David Ferrin

Good point my friend for sure. It would naturally take a lot more horse
power to operate a very human sounding voice as apposed to something that
was out 20 years ago. Thanks for stating it so clearly. We just make the
best of what is available to us and that's all we can do. That's why this
list exists, to help each other out.

How is it so difficult to understand that is the compromise?

It takes a lot more code to be executed and a lot more memory to be accessed
to provide very high quality human sounding speech. This takes time and
computer processor cycles.

There is a reason why super sonic jet fighters are very small and not well
suited to hauling cargo. It might be possible to get similar performance out
of a wide body passenger jet with enough effort but the example of Concord
demonstrates people aren't willing to pay for it.

In this day and age for sure blind people are not willing to pay for that
level of performance, what I constantly hear is that blind people aren't
happy about paying for current levels of performance.

Sorry moderator if this is verging on the limits of list topic. It seems
though that we are unsure about what it is we require from our access
technology, access, versatility, speed, luxury or just what? Be careful what
you wish for. Our scanning and reading software hasn't brought us any real
advances in print reading for at least a decade. It does give us all sorts
of voices and dictionaries and buggy access to already available libraries
which many of us are refused access to but the actual reading capability
depends on other software providers like Abbey.

For my money I would prefer screen access technology which gives me reliable
screen access to all of the functions of my computer and so long as it is
intelligible I'll accept that until the primary functions are achieved. When
we no longer have queries about scripts to be able to use this or that, when
all Web sites are rendered intelligible, when Word or Access or Visual Basic
and other IDES work for us then is the time to worry about absolute language
perfection. Seamless and convenient access is where I prefer Freedom
Scientific to spend their development time and money on.

Actually, no new voices have been integrated into Jaws.
Version 8.0 of Jaws shipped on cd with the RealSpeak Solo voices on a
 seperate cd.
Everyone should be clear on the fact that these voices are not a part of
 the
Eloquence synthesizer that ships with Jaws.
The voices available at Nextup.com, are Sappi compliant voices that will
 work with Jaws.
Sappi is a different synthesizer altogether.
Now, it would be nice if the Eloquence synthesizer that Jaws uses, could
incorporate these newer voices, so we could have better speech output,
 with
 the performance of Eloquence.
I don't have any idea how this would be done, but you would think in this
modern age of technology, it would be possible.

HI, in making a message rule, must you have the complete address of the list
so that the mail goes directly in to a folder for example jaws
[EMAIL PROTECTED], would go in to jaws users. even though there are
other jaws lists, this one has a distinct address that is different from the
others.

[JAWS-Users] Wave Pack

2007-02-13 Thread David Ferrin

I'm in the process of uploading an audio compression program called wave
pack. It's free to use and the author clams no warranty according to the

operate.

I'm trying to create a Portable JAWS CD, but when I try to select the CD

with the device with which it was bundled (or something to that effect). I
recently downloaded and installed the version of Nero available on the JAWS
Users web page so am confused about what I may be doing wrong. I had
previously had used some 5.something version of Nero and the last time I
tried using it to burn a CD had no difficulty.

Any tips?

Good evening,

Need some quick advice. I have on board sound in my Acer computer and the
chip or whatever went bad on the board last night thus NO SOUND. I have
available slots to add a sound card. What good basic ones are folks using?
I also listen to music and have a great speaker system complete with
subwoofer so I'd like something decent but not top of the line. It has been
years since I've used one but I remember Soundblaster used to be good.

Is there any other options like an external sound device that could be used
and plugged into a USB port? If so would this enable all sound from
computer including CD et to go through it?

thanks folks (using a spare computer in the house to do this)

[JAWS-Users] new footer message

2007-02-11 Thread David Ferrin

I've just changed the footer message but only very slightly. The reason is
so for those folks who wish to contact any of the four of us privately about
list business there's only going to be a single central point for the
address. This just means that if I ever need to change the moderating team
address it will be seamless for all of you good people. What I've done is
place a link at the bottom of every message to the contact form on the web
site for you to fill out. It's a learning process and I wish it would have
occurred to me earlier but no matter. The purpose of this is so once you
get accustomed to contacting us in this manner it shouldn't ever change
again. Sorry for giving you more work but consider how much I've given
myself already this morning, just kidding.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Tips and Tricks?

Download and install a program called clean up from my programs page. Along
with several other items that it will empty out it will also do what you
need.

Don't know of any way to delete the commands in the run list, but they will
eventually be replaced by other commands.

That worked.

By the way, how can I delete the incorrect command in the run section?
I tried selecting the choice and then hit delete, but that did not work.

Thanks again.

Try putting a space between the chkdsk and the /f.

I have XP and JAWS 6.0.
I was following the tips and Tricks suggestions under the PC maintenance
 heading.
When I performed the Check Disc , heading number 3, I only put in the
 edit
 field chkdsk.
When I hit enter, the function seemed to start right away without giving
 me the option to re-start.

After reviewing the instructions I noticed that I should have put in the
 edit field chkdsk/f.
When I tried to perform the instructions this way, I got a dialogue that
said, that file can not be found.

My question is; should I have used the /F?
Did I screw up anything the first way I performed this action?

 Thank you for any help.

 Rich

Good evening,

Need some quick advice. I have on board sound in my Acer computer and the
chip or whatever went bad on the board last night thus NO SOUND. I have
available slots to add a sound card. What good basic ones are folks using?
I also listen to music and have a great speaker system complete with
subwoofer so I'd like something decent but not top of the line. It has been
years since I've used one but I remember Soundblaster used to be good.

Is there any other options like an external sound device that could be used
and plugged into a USB port? If so would this enable all sound from
computer including CD et to go through it?

thanks folks (using a spare computer in the house to do this)
Al

2007-02-10 Thread David Ferrin

If you need the help before I ever get the chance to post the instructions
or do an audio tutorial I could always contact you privately and walk you
through the process. It's not too much of a change but a person wouldn't
get it just by stumbling on it either.

Let me consider it for a bit, but here are my first thoughts on the
matter.
Yes it is possible to automatically mute jaws when a given application in
launched and have it wake up upon exiting that same program but it
wouldn't
work for a given user in my experience. Jaws doesn't care which user is
at
the controls, because it bases itself on the executable file that is in
focus instead rather than who is logged in at any given time. So my first
thoughts are no I doubt it would work, now if somebody can prove me wrong

 Hi David and others,

A thought occured to me. A couple weeks ago, one of the
listers was asking whether there was a way he could get
jfw to come back up when his wife logged off the system.
Earlier this week, you shared some scripts with me for
using different synthesisers and then Carla asked about
different jfw settings for different user accoutns.
 Here's my question,
How possible do you think it would be to have the no
speech feature activated in one account and when that
person logged off, jfw would revert to the default
 settings with speech.
 What do you think?

 Kerry

Well, if any one out there know anything about using Jaws with Linnics, I
