Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and freezing
I don't want to overwhelm this serious issue with inherently worthless responses. However, technicians at VFO have told me that the issue is "under the hood" so to speak. Apparently, the newer versions of Jaws have been redesigned in such a way that their headroom can be inundated by software which requires more than normal functionality. In other words, the more complex the software, the higher degree of probability that Jaws might freeze or even crash under certain conditions. On the other hand, I have noticed that with jaws 18, the program will often recover itself without any prompting. The freezing is annoying but if we can be reassured that Jaws will recover, it might be something we'll just have to put up with until the designers find a way to deal with it. Personally, I think that Jaws had made some amazing progress recently. I have no reason to think that the designers won't continue to make it a better program. [JAWS-Users] A REALLY DECENT SCANNER
Hi group, First of all, Merry Christmas to everyone. Santa brought me a really nice flatbed scanner for Christmas. I didn't know that they were still made. This is an Epson Perfection. It has quite a few advantages over the older scanners I have used. First of all, the Epson Perfection no longer requires separate AC attachments. The disk holding the drivers will install automatically. It adds an icon to your desktop for their built-in software package. However, it works quite well with Open Book. The scanner is small, light and very quiet. For some scanning operations, I still prefer a flatbed scanner over the Pearl Camera. What's more, this thing is now on sale at Best Buy for under $100. [JAWS-Users] A QUICK ACCESS TO ATTACHMENTS USING MICROSOFT OUTLOOK
A QUICK ACCESS TO ATTACHMENTS USING MICROSOFT OUTLOOK BY: JOHN JUSTICE Outlook offers an easy way to view, read or save attachments. This process works on any attachment, text or audio. 1. Open the e-mail message in Microsoft Outlook. 2. SHIFT+TAB to the list of attachments. That list will include the message itself. 3. Use the right arrow to highlight the attachment to be read or listened to 4. Press Enter to activate whichever app will be used to access that attachment. With audio attachments, the default player is Windows Media Player. For Word documents, Outlook will open a Word based document in that environment automatically. If the attachment is in text format, Notepad is the default application. NOTE: This process will not automatically save the attachment. It will simply open it for you. To save the attachment, press CONTROL+S and follow the prompts. FORWARDING AN E-MAIL ATTACHMENT USING MICROSOFT OUTLOOK Outlook will still show the list of attachments on a separate screen. Focus on that screen and press Escape to close the display. To forward a message including the attachment, 1. Return to the list of messages. 2. Press CONTROL+F to activate the Forwarding option 3. Type the destination e-mail address 4. Tab to the message body and press ALT+S to send the message. When I begin to type, the first few letters are spoken by jaws even though Ive always had this setting to echo speech off. The more frustrating thing is that focus will jump around and what I type is spread out all over the document. This is especially annoying when Im working off a template text and have to go hunt for the stray letters. The thing is, if I type the first couple of letters and then erase them, everything works fine. I have to believe that in all my typing, I must have accidentally enabled some sort of odd setting since this has only been a recent issue and I dont experience it in a standard Word document. Only in Outlook messages. My version of Outlook is 2010 and my messages are set to HTML. I am using the most recent version of Jaws 18. Does anyone have an idea of what may be causing this issue or what setting I might try to change to fix it? That or is there some sort of set to default setting in Outlook for composing messages? Re: [JAWS-Users] is Avast! better than windows defender?
Charles, I started using the free version of Avast about 7 months ago. The interface isn't perfect by any means but the latest version is quite navigable. I have been tempted to upgrade to the paid version since the one I am currently using is excellent. For a while, I was using Microsoft Essentials but I had several problems involving Internet Explorer corruption. after I ran the free Avast, those problems went away. You may find it necessary to navigate the interface with your Jaws cursor rather than the system cursor. However, in the latest version, updated on the 21st of October, if you use your Jaws cursor to click on Scan, an easily navigable list comes up and you can choose what you'd like to do. One of the options is something called Smart Scan. This is a combination of a quick scan and a review of your software. If anything requires updating, Avast will give you that option. Re: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading to JAWS 16
Hi Kate, I'll answer each question in the sequence you provided. I need to know how to save the new version to my desktop and how to create a hot key for it. If you install Jaws 16 on your computer, it will automatically create a desktop icon for you. Freedom Scientific assumes that you will want to use the new software right away. Can I leave the old version of JAWS on the desktop? Yes, you can. They will be marked Jaws 13 and Jaws 16. Also will my computer start up each time with the new version of JAWS? It will if you set it up that way. After installing Jaws 16, presss INSERT+J to reach the Jaws window. You will be presented with a menu. If you press ALT+O you'll be taken to the Options menu. The first choice in that menu is Basics. The title is followed by three dots. That means that you have to press Enter to open the menu. Within that menu, is a submenu called Automatically Start Jaws. Activate it by pressin your spacebar. The first option is to start Jaws automatically. That is a check box and you press the spacebar to check it. There are other options as well. If you are the only one who uses Jaws on your computer, choose Start Jaws for All Users. Some of these settings are already chosen. Jaws 13 will still be on your system but 16 will now start automatically. Jaws takes up quite a bit of space on your hard drive, Kate. But I certainly do understand that you might want to return to Jaws 13 until you are completely familiar with version 16. Are there any major changes from JAWS 13 TO 16? Yes there are. The best way to learn about the new features and capabilities would be to read the What's New In Jaws 16 choice in your Help menu. Jaws 16 comes with a full set of instruction books, also available in the Help menu. Some of them are Daisy books which will speak automatically. To access the Jaws Help menu in version 16, Press INSERT+J to reach the Jaws window. Press alt+h to access the Help menu and use your up and down arrows to choose the topic you'd like to hear. If you press Enter while focused on one of those options, the reader will start automatically. If you are unfamiliar with a Daisy player, it works like Windows Media Player. You can stop the reading by pressing CONTROL+p. That command also starts the reading again. To shut down and close the reader, press CONTROL+S. If you need more help with the reader, there's a complete manual describing how to use it in the Help menu. I have been using Avast as my anti-virus protection. It also looks for unwanted programs or for software which needs updating. There is a free version and recent updates have made it quite accessible for Jaws users. It also has its own voice and sound elements. I am very pleased with the results and with the accessible status of Avast. The web site is below. http://www.avast.com IMPORTANT NOTE: There are two Avast versions. Re: [JAWS-Users] New recordings using Jaws with various programs
Excellent work, Jim. I'd like to suggest a possible change to the way you are recording which will improve the quality of the sound. There are audio mixers available which would allow you to send the signal from your PC and your voice into a hard wired connection. In doing so, the recording software would have a much cleaner signal to process. This is in no way a criticism. Your work and delivery is top notch. I'm a professional musician and for me, getting the best sound available is important. If you'd like to try this suggestion, please e-mail me off list and I can research what is currently available for you. Keep up the good work. Re: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade
Hi Fred, It looks as if some of our members didn't quite understand your questions. I'll try to help. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WINDOWS 7 AND 8.1 Windows 8.1 doesn't have the same setup as Windows 7. There is no Start menu in the same configuration. Instead, when you press the Windows key, you go to a list of apps which are arranged in column format. You can still navigate to the Desktop by pressing WINDOWS+M or WINDOWS+D. It is still possible to move items onto the Desktop. However, many of the things you already have installed in your system will appear on the list as apps. I have Office 2010 for example and all of the separate programs are listed. To open one, all you have to do is navigate to it and press Enter. The Search capability in 8.1 is great! If you are on that list of apps, just start typing your search term and the system will automatically jump to the item if it is on the system. It will also show you documents pertaining to that item. Once you get into any of your applications, 8.1 doesn't behave any differently than Windows 7 did. It's faster, much faster than Windows 7. Accessing the Control Panel is a bhit more difficult because 8.1 divides the listings into groups sorted by their purpose. You can still reach the Programs and Features list, however. I believe that 8.1 was designed to be more attractive to those who would be using it on a portable device. There are some differences in the operations of 8.1 but essentially, it is a good operating system. Many people hate it, Fred. It took some getting used to for me but now, after working with it for a while, I find it so good that I'm in no hurry to upgrade to Windows 10. You were right about your older system not working with 10 by the way. It requires more head room than you probably have on that older system. I hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] iTunes latest 12.225 update, good news
Rose, John Justice here. I have a suggestion which might work if you are using ITunes on a computer. There is a company which has developed a set of scripts that make it easier to navigate ITunes. The web site is below. It costs $10 but it's worth every penny in my opinion. www.blindtunes.net I use ITunes only for music and many of our other members do much more with it. But some of these scripts do things like creating a list of options, navigating directly to the Search Window or to the ITunes store and so on. It's certainly worth a try. The good thing is that once you buy the original software, any future updates are free and the company definitely does try to keep up with the changes in ITunes. I don't know if there's a version which works on a phone. Re: [JAWS-Users] Upgrading W7 to windows 8.1
Hi Fred, John Justice, here. I made the transition a while ago. Here's what I found out. 8.1 takes some getting used to. It opens on a screen which contains all of the apps loaded into the system. Some, but not all of these apps are accessible. They are arranged in columns and you can navigate up and down or across using standard Jaws commands. For example, the Weather app is good once you have entered your location. The Music app is okay but it takes some getting used to. The Mail app, in its original form, insists that you have a Microsoft account. I don't have one of those so I avoid that app. There is a Desktop app but it leads you to a special desktop, not the original one and it isn't particularly accessible. Windows 8.1 will learn your preferences as you go along. There is a Search capability which is excellent. You can either shift tab to the Search or just start typing and the system will move quickly to the Search dialog. Accessing the Desktop can still be achieved by using WINDOWS+M or D. Fred, finding things like programs and features is a bit more difficult. Here are the good things. Windows 8.1 is much faster than Windows 7 in loading. However, there is a Sign-in page which appears and you have to enter your password every time. Windows 8.1 contains biometric sign-in options but they probably won't work on an older system like yours. 8.1 has, for me at least, very few crashes. It's quick and crisp when changing programs. The WINDOWS+E function allows you access to all of the stored files in your PC. Most of the Windows functions are still available but they are not as easily accessible in Windows 8.1 when comparing it to Windows 7. Finding All Programs for example is a challenge unless you type that phrase into your Search window. 8.1 tends to divide the listings into sections pertaining to their general function. This is a general description. I hope I have it all correct. I have been using 8.1 for more than a year, now. If you run into trouble, just yell. **VERY IMPORTANT** Narrator is absolutely fantastic in 8.1. You can turn it on by using WINDOWS+ENTER and in its original configuration, you turn it off the same way. The voice is clear and can be used quite effectively when Jaws isn't working. You may need sighted assistance when loading 8.1. I have heard people say that they did it without help. Quite honestly, I couldn't make it happen. But with the assistance of a neighbor, I had it up and running in a very short time. If you are in the Documents window, if you delete an item, it just disappears without requesting confirmation. That's a relatively simple thing but it is important to a screen reading user. John, Here's my take on your questions, after having updated 2 of my computers to Windows 10 in the past week. 1 of these computers was a Windows 7 machine, and the other was an 8.1 machine. 1.We know that Jaws doesn't work with the Edge browser or with the e-mail client at this time. 2. There is a solution since Internet Explorer is also an option with Windows 10 and apparently, Windows Live Mail and Outlook do work with the new operating system. Answer for #s 1 2: You are right in what you are saying, but Internet Explorer does work very well with Windows 10, and so does Windows Live Mail, which I have used for years, and I have heard many saying that Outlook is working well too, so this should not be a hold back from updating. 3. Is there enough of a difference between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 to make the change worth the transition? Answer: I say yes, there is a huge difference. First, if you have had the opportunity to use both Windows 7 and 8.1, then you know the differences there, and as well, you know what you liked and disliked about both of them, this being said, imagine an operating system that takes the best from each, and combines them into one major upgrade, then, Microsoft gives it to you for free! What's not to like? Secondly, I have not found very much in Windows 10 that just does not work. Everything that I have tried so far, except for Edge and the Mail app have worked well, even Cortana workkes well, and she always seems to give me the information that I ask for, or perform the task that I ask her to. . 4. Will Jaws be able to work with Edge and the e-mail client later on? Answer: I say yes again. I believe that Microsoft and/or Freedom Scientific, will do what ever it takes to make both of these applications work with JAWS in the near future. It is true, that right now, they are both in an unusable state, but this was mentioned up front, and the decisions to update have still been in record breaking numbers. Mostly, I have heard only good reviews of the program to this point, and yes, there have been some who have experienced some problems trying to install the update, but many times, I believe it has been because Microsoft's recommendations were not followed during the process. I have installed the thing onto 2 of my computers so far, one of which I am about to give uto someone else to use, and I am about to install Windows 10 onto my last computer, a Lenovo desktop which I recently purchased. So far, I have not experienced any problems with updating either of my computers, and the whole process takes only about 2 hours to perform. I used narrator during both of my installations to select the Typical installation option, and shortly after, my computers rebooted and JAWS began speaking again. Nothing was lost in the process, just as promised. Having used Windows 10 for a little while now, I don't think that I would want to go back to 7 or 8.1. Both are great operating systems, but both are lacking in some areas that I believe are made up for in Windows 10. At any rate, this is my opinion, and I believe it counts for something, if not to anyone but me. I say to you, Update man, you won't regret it. [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS 10, IS IT WORTH UPGRADING NOW?
I feel as if I'm the only person in the room who sees the elephant. 1.We know that Jaws doesn't work with the Edge browser or with the e-mail client at this time. 2. There is a solution since Internet Explorer is also an option with Windows 10 and apparently, Windows Live Mail and Outlook do work with the new operating system. 3. Is there enough of a difference between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 to make the change worth the transition? 4. Will Jaws be able to work with Edge and the e-mail client later on? UP till now, Microsoft has been very supportive where screen readers are concerned. Why then, is part of Windows 10 not accessible with Jaws? Or, is it too early to load 10? [JAWS-Users] JAWS 16 ANNOYING E-MAIL PROBLEM AND SOLUTION
I'm using Outlook 2010 and Jaws 16 with Windows 8.1. I have noticed that when you delete messages from a folder, the last message looks as if it is still there. First of all, it isn't. If you do a mass Delete, it is removed with the other messages. This is some kind of odd Jaws behavior. There is a way to deal with it.Once you have deleted the messages, press the Backspace key. Re: [JAWS-Users] open attached doc. in protected view
Sure thing, Tom. 1. Open document in protected view. 2. Locate the File tab on your ribbon. 3. Down arrow to the Info menu. 4. Tab slowly and listen for the Allow Edit button. That should be two tab positions from the start. 5. Press Enter to activate the allow Edit button. IMPORTANT: Once you have taken a document out of Protected View, it's always best to press CONTROL+S to save the document. In most cases, once Protected View is removed, it stays that way. But occasionally, Heaven only knows why, you close the document and when it's re-opened, Protected View reappears. If you save the document in an editable form, that doesn't happen. You could get the Home and Student version which will contain Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and One Note for a little over $100. Word by itself will probably cost you this much, I have not checked in years, but the last time I did, the different Office softwares as stand alone applications were running $99.99 each. Then there is the Office 365 route. This is Office 2013 sold on a monthly subscription basis. You will always have the latest version updated automatically, and for $6.95 per month you can get the personal version which will include Word, Excel, and I believe Powerpoint and maybe Outlook? but I am not sure about this one, but you do get 4 of the Office software packages with this subscription. To subscribe to this, go to www.office.com, and sign into your Microsoft account, and there will be an option to purchase Office 365 on the page somewhere. If you decide to purchase an Office suite, then you will find better deals on the internet or maybe at one of the chain type office supply stores. Try www.softwareking.com. Hi D J, Karen gave you one way to do it. In my opinion, this one is a bit more navigable for someone who isn't familiar with the process. 1. Press ALT+F to open the File menu 2. Tab down to the Save Attachments dialog and press enter 3. Locate the Okay button and press Enter again Note: You have now isolated the attachment. 4. If you press Enter on the Save button, Windows will save the attachment to the default location, usually Documents 5. To specify a saved location, tab over to the folder tree and locate the one you want it placed in 6. Back space to the Save button and press Enter. That seems more complicated but it is easier to work with. I have found that Karen's method sometimes works while at other times, for whatever reason, the attachment file doesn't show. [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS 10, OBSERVATIONS AND ANALYSIS
The opinions expressed in this document are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of Freedom Scientific or the list management. After reading The FS-Cast podcast and studying other informatory resources, I have reached the conclusion that Windows 10, at least in its original form, is not a good choice for those who use screen readers. Please note. Windows 10 is still a work in progress. Freedom Scientific will certainly keep tabs on things as they develop and make the necessary changes. THE EDGE WEB BROWSER: Microsoft has already made massive changes in this new web browser and they admit that it is not as good as was hoped. The software was designed like Firefox and Google Chrome but it doesn't function nearly as well as either of those programs. Unfortunately, it does not work well at all with screen readers. The Windows 10, scheduled for a release on July 29, is definitely not a comfortable fit for Jaws. THE NEW WINDOWS 10 CONFIGURATION: Microsoft has heard us and is trying to bring back the older configurations like Windows XP and Windows 7. According to an article published by Microsoft, their attempt to design a Start menu which worked well with smart phones and IPads, resulted in numerous complaints from PC users. The version of Windows 10 scheduled for release can give you a taste of what is coming but that too is currently in a fluid state. I asked a Microsoft representative why they are sending out a product which is still imperfect or incomplete. His response was, Look, we're going to hit most of our customers at home with this new software. Some will buy it because it is new. Our free upgrade will add many more customers to our list. What we're trying to do is get away from 8.1. We have had so many problems with that version of Windows. We almost had to do this to keep from losing too many retail customers to the Apple software. People like you and other customers who use screen readers or magnification are a tiny minority when compared to the rest of our customer base. That doesn't mean we won't work to fix these issues but we won't be able to do it right away. I asked him how we should proceed in the meantime. His suggestion was to maintain our current versions of Windows or, ideally, load Windows 10 but change the Default browser to Internet Explorer, still available in this new release. Windows 10 is currently being tested by Freedom Scientific and this latest Jaws update has indeed addressed some of the problems. However, many issues still exist. To quote Jonathan Mosen, If you enjoy experimenting with software and trying to find ways to make it work, Windows 10 is going to work for you. For those of us who use our computers to do work or reach out to other people throughout the world, the last thing we need is a system which might or might not work in any given situation. Re: [JAWS-Users] Text columns
Hi Wayne, When navigating between columns in a document, use CONTROL+ALT+RIGHT ARROW OR CONTROL+ALT+LEFT ARROW The columns are already a part of the document, Wayne. You could copy the text and then put it into a Word file. That would require a lot of data handling to make it a simple document. It can be done. 1. Copy the entire document onto the Clipboard 2. Open a new Word document Note: You can paste the text only into the document by using Paste Special. 3.Press CONTROL+ALT+V A dialog will open which includes a number of paste options. 4. Choose Text Only and press Enter The text will be pasted into your document but no column formatting will be included. You can then manipulate the text in any way that suits your needs. Re: [JAWS-Users] stop jaws completely
Petras, Mike has the right set of instructions here. The only problem with his plan is that Jaws will not start at all when you turn on the computer. You won't know if everything is up and running or not. There is a way to do this but it's involved with setting up a different User profile, one which doesn't include Jaws starting automatically. Arranging User profiles is difficult but not impossible. If you'd like to attempt that, please let me know and I'll research the procedure for you. What will happen though, at least in Windows 7, is that you will be presented with a page where you have to choose which User to open. That is a silent display in some cases, depending on how your Jaws was set up originally. If, for example, Jaws was set in the Basics menu to Log On At Startup, then you would hear the User page. Petra, wouldn't it be better just to show your friend how to turn off Jaws? That's a simpler and more direct process. Re: [JAWS-Users] using an alternate voice during say all
As Mike has already noted, Say All was abandoned. Personally, I wish it was still available for the very reasons you pointed out. Below, you will find some suggestions and detailed instructions. First of all, the premium voice you downloaded is still there. However, it is listed under a different synthesizer. If you downloaded the voice from the Freedom Scientific web site, it is listed under the Vocalizer Expressive synthesizer. You can, as Mike mentioned, change to that voice by choosing it from the list. 1. While focused on the application you want to use, press INSERT+CONTROL+S 2. This command opens a list of voice profiles. The one you want is Vocalizer Expressive 3. After choosing the profile, tab to Okay and press Enter Now, if you would like that voice to be called up automatically when you switch to that application, you can do that. Here's an example of what I mean. If you are using Microsoft Word and you would like Ava Premium to do all of the reading in that environment, follow the steps below. 1. Press INSERT+J to open the Jaws interface 2. Choose the Options menu by typing ALT+O 3. Choose the Voice menu 4. Locate and press Enter on the Voice Adjustment option 5. Tab to the Profile list and choose Vocalizer Expressive 6. Tab past the Delete Profile and Language options 7. Tab to the Adjust Voice dialog and leave it set on All Contexts 8. Tab through the settings and adjust the voice to suit your personal needs 9. There are a couple of settings referring to Spell Rate and Upper Case Pitch. Avoid those 10. Tab to the Save As option and press Enter. Here, you can choose a different name for the profile and save the settings you have made. I usually create a profile named after the application I'm using. For example, in this scenario, I'd choose Microsoft Word. Type that in and press Enter. 1. Now open Microsoft Word or whatever word processor you are using 2. Press INSERT+CONTROL+S. Use your up and down arrows to choose your new profile 3. Note: There is an option to use your new profile as the Default. Don't do that unless you want that same voice used in every application or environment 4. After making your choice, tab to an option which asks you what profile is to be used for the word processor 5. Place focus on the new profile you have created 6. Tab to Okay and press Enter From this point on, every time you open that application, the correct profile will be automatically chosen. There is an advantage to making a profile change on the fly. The change is temporary. You can choose another voice to edit the document. If you exit and reopen the application, the program will be loaded with the Default profile. I hope that this helps. [JAWS-Users] JAWS 16 KEYBOARD ISSUE, RESOLVED
Hello everyone, I had a real problem with Jaws 16 and several keyboards I was using. The hotkey INSERT+V which opens the Quick Settings dialog was not recognized. The issue has now been resolved but I thought the information might be useful to someone else who has this problem. KEYBOARD COMMANDS NOT RECOGNIZED BY JAWS 16 1.Is this problem unique to one computer? 2. If so, have you tried several different keyboards with the same results? 3. Do remote keyboards act differently than hard wired ones? In my case, I have an older HP desktop. When I pressed INSERT+V, nothing would happen. I tried changing keyboards, thinking there was an issue with that particular wireless model. There was no change. Next, I purchased a keyboard which connected directly to the system using a USB interface. Again, that made no difference. Finally, I decided to institute a Jaws Repair. . I located my Jaws 16 disk and clicked on the Run option when Autoload came up. . I followed the steps, choosing Jaws from the options offered. . Eventually, the installation wizard came to a series of buttons including Repair. I pressed Enter on that choice. . Jaws went through quite a lengthy process, then asked me if I wanted to save my personal settings. I chose yes. . Finally, Jaws informed me that I needed to restart my system for the changes to take effect. I pressed Enter on the Okay button. . When restarting, Jaws goes through a dialog similar to the Basics Settings menu in Options. I carefully went through all of those settings since Jaws will occasionally remove check marks in some areas. As soon as Jaws started up, I checked by pressing INSERT+V. It worked! Apparently, something had gone wrong with the original installation or with one of the updates which followed. Important Note: Apparently, when a repair is initiated, it has no effect on the current version of Jaws in your system. Finally, if you decide to purchase a wireless keyboard, be sure to buy one of the models which are rated as better quality. Theoretically, a remote connection should have no effect on the keyboard's functionality. However, it has been my experience that wireless keyboards which are relatively low quality tend to behave oddly at times. Several manufacturers are normally reliable: Digilogic, Microsoft, HP, On the other hand, USB keyboards are normally reliable, even the ones which are inexpensive. The only issue is that the contact points wear quickly. The average age of n inexpensive USB keyboard is about two years. Gerald, I have been using the free version of Avast with good success. They constantly update the software and Avast automatically downloads new virus definitions when they are available. Windows 10 is a well-meaning effort by Microsoft to mollify Windows 8 haters and coax Windows 7 loyalists to upgrade - all while stubbornly sticking to its goal of a single OS for every possible platform. And by framing the problem that way, Microsoft has given itself a nearly impossible task. . To the company's credit, each new build lurches closer to being usable, although with new bugs every time, it is difficult to evaluate how smooth the final release version will be. Best case: It may earn the grudging acceptance of Windows 7 users who refuse to move to Windows 8. And part of that acceptance will come not from sudden enthusiasm for a new way of interacting with the desktop, but from a desire to take advantage of the clear core benefits Windows 10 provides in performance, security, administration, and memory usage over Windows 7 and even Windows 8. . So why is it so hard to convince users to move to a brand-new, free, feature-packed, more efficient OS? . http://www.extremetech.com/computing/205320-microsoft-windows-10-will-be-the -last-version-of-windows . . Apple does it all the time. Simply put, because Microsoft didn't build Windows 8 or Windows 10 for Windows users. It built them to further its own business strategy of using the power of the once-ubiquitous Windows platform to extend its dominance into the rapidly growing mobile space. The result is an OS whose features are now flipping and flopping with each new build - as Microsoft tries to fix problems of its own creation. . Imagine how good a desktop OS Windows 10 could have been . What if instead, after realizing what a terrible mistake Windows 8 was, Microsoft had made the truly brave decision to come clean and change its strategy? If Windows 10 had been designed from the beginning to be the best possible desktop OS, and the thousands of developer years spent trying to make it everything to everyone were instead spent providing services and applications for the mobile OS platforms people actually want? If in tandem Microsoft was willing to let go of its sub-3% market share in mobile, it could also have spent the cash it used to buy Nokia to build out its cross-platform services offerings instead. We could have had a really excellent desktop OS - worth paying for - . http://www.extremetech.com/computing/201601-microsoft-desperately-wants-you- to-move-to-windows-10 . . and great integration with the leading mobile platforms. . Certainly Microsoft has woken up to providing competitive versions of its applications on Android and iOS. But imagine how much further along it would have been if it had put real work into the effort starting years ago. Perhaps we wouldn't have to use third-party utilities to sync our information between Google and Outlook, for example. Or OneNote might have supported syncing on Android during the first several years it was available, instead of only recently. Pick any Microsoft desktop technology you access from your iOS or Android device and you can come up with a list of features that would make it much more useful. . . It's not like there isn't anything to fix in Windows . Anyone who thinks Microsoft didn't focus on desktop users as it evolved Windows 8 and 10 because its desktop OS has no need for improvement hasn't spent enough time wrestling with the inscrutable hex error codes from Windows Update, or debugging driver version mismatches, or finding information they're sure is somewhere on their disk. While Windows 10 isn't final, judging by the builds so far, all of those problems are still there. Even support for high-resolution displays is still spotty. Windows 10 adds some new Zoom options, but there is still no serious scalable-font solution that works across the full range of possible displays. . As a good example of how this alternate direction would have worked, let's look at the Control Panel. No one doubts that it is an old, crufty system for managing a computer. [JAWS-Users] FW: WINDOWS 10 AND SPARTAN
Hello group, It seems that my recent post has created some questions and confusion. With that in mind, I'm sending a copy of an e-mail I sent to Bob Entofer. He had some reasonable questions and I'm hoping that this message will help to clear up anyone else's concerns. From: John Justice [mailto:john.just...@virtualvisiontech.com] Sent: Monday, April 20, 2015 1:35 PM To: bob.edenho...@gmail.com Subject: WINDOWS 10 AND SPARTAN Bob, I can answer some of these questions but not all of them, yet. How did you find out that Microsoft is no longer going to use internet explorer for windows 10? That information has been available for quite some time. If you were to Google Windows 10, you would find that information. In addition, Freedom Scientific and Microsoft always work in tandem and make sure that any new software they come out with is compatible. Can you tell me a little bit about Spartan? Will it be accessible with jaws? and can you use adobe flash player with it? Spartan is a search engine built with Google Chrome and Firefox as the initial platform. It has characteristics of both Google Chrome and Firefox. Adobe Flash Player is an independent software package. However, be assured that Adobe is no fool. I'm sure that their software is already compatible or that they will come out with one of their new updates which will render it workable with Windows 10. Will it be accessible with jaws? I have never found a Microsoft major software package that wasn't accessible with Jaws. Some of the elements in Microsoft Office aren't Jaws friendly but for the most part, there hasn't been a Microsoft operating system that Jaws couldn't work with. Could I also use Free YouTube to MP3 converter to download and convert music videos to mp3? Again, you are asking about software which operates independently from the Windows operating system. I don't see any compatibility issues but only time will tell. Will I need to install Spartan if I upgrade to windows 10? Or, does it come installed with windows 10? Windows 10 will use Spartan in the same way as prior versions used Internet Explorer. There will be no need to upgrade since Spartan is already a part of the Windows 10 operating system. Why is it, that internet explorer is being replaced? In the past two years, Microsoft has reported thousands of instances in which Internet Explorer was used as a gateway into personal and commercial computer systems. Although Microsoft has attempted to recognize and deal with these situations, it was determined that the most reliable way of handling all of these intrusions was to develop and implement a completely new search engine. That is what will be done with the introduction of Windows 10 and The Spartan search facility. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. http://www.avast.com For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and google chrome!
Ladies and gentlemen, We ran tests on these browsers at Virtual Vision Technologies. Regrettably, there are some browsers out there which are incredibly fast but they aren't accessible with a screen reader or magnification. Each of these browsers has elements which are unique and keeping them around is an excellent suggestion. However, each person uses an internet browser in his or her own manner. INTERNET EXPLORER: Reliable and fairly consistent in all types of HTML environment. However, Internet Explorer has been targeted for hacking and interference more than any other software of its type. 2. GOOGLE CHROME: Not completely accessible. Due to its incompatibility with screen readers, Google Chrome can be frustrating at times . The spoken search capability is an excellent option once it has been set up with a PC. However, that is a difficult process for anyone except an advanced computer user. Once acquired, Google Chrome can be almost twice as fast as older versions of Explorer but it is affected by Internet traffic and will slow to a crawl in high volume conditions. Google Chrome is still a work in progress and it too has been hacked and abused on many occasions. The opinions expressed here are based on our observations. We tested and timed both browsers using Windows 7 and 8.1 systems. Local internet conditions must be taken into consideration. With the introduction of Windows 10, Internet Explorer will no longer be used by Microsoft. It is being replaced by a new browser called Spartan. Spartan uses technology originally made available through Google Chrome and other lesser known search engines. We anticipate that Spartan will be an entirely new approach to surfing the Internet. As always, early versions of Windows 10 may require additional upgrades to deal with bugs and development issues. Thank you for taking the time to read this. As explained below, there is a work-around that is actually much more direct and stable. Instead of going through Adobe, open the PDF directly through Openbook. You use the standard Openbook folder/file open command, control and o, or go through the file menu. Although it might not be necessary, I would cursor down in the file type box and pick PDF. Otherwise, the dialog boxes work the same as for any Windows program. The above eliminates all the hassle and potential crashes when using Adobe and the Freedom Import printer. It also is much more direct. If you want to make it even easier to use Openbook in this way, add Openbook to the open with dialog box you can get to if you are in Windows Explorer with your cursor on the PDF file. Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with excel
Jaws can be set to read the cells in many ways. There are specific settings in the Quick Settings section. 1. While focused on Excel, press INSERT+V to open the Quick Settings dialog. 2. Arrow down to the beginning of the texdt or use the Search window and type something like read cell contents. 3. The easiest way is to press the letter T twice. That takes you to a setting indicating that Jaws should read the cell contents. 4. Now use first letter navigation C, pressed twice. 5. You will be in the settings for cells. Here's the great part of Quick Settings. If you aren't sure, just highlight a setting, then tab over and there will be a text box explaining what each setting does. The text explanations change, depending on which parameter you have highlighted currently. Before doing anything, look through these. 6. You can try a change, make a note of it and then if you don't like the results, open up Quick Settings again and try another setting. Excel settings for Jaws are quite extensive. I suggest you figure out what you want to do and then try to find the setting that makes Jaws do that. Reading cell contents is one of those settings. You can also have Jaws read the column or row settings in Excel but that's for another message. Re: [JAWS-Users] iTunes 12.1 fix
Absolutely not. The libraries are separate files and are not impacted by the removal of ITunes and its components. According to Apple Support, it is not necessary to remove the older version or the defective one. All you need to do is activate the special .exe file. [JAWS-Users] JAWS 16, STRANGE E-MAIL ISSUE
I'm using Jaws 16, Windows 7 and Outlook 2010. I have incoming messages sorted into folders based on the subject. When I delete messages from one of those folders, Jaws 16 indicates that there is one message remaining. But if I exit the folder and then return, the message is gone. There are some observations I can make in hopes that this might help some of the list members whom are having trouble with that feature. I have attached a typical .pdf document. I hope that Mailman won't strip it out. 1.The new Document OCR works on the type of .pdf document which cannot be read normally by Jaws. This document is what is sometimes referred to as an imaged .pdf document. Rather than an actual copy of the document in its original form, a photocopy is made which is then transmitted. For the sighted user, this does not present a problem since the document is visible when opened. That kind of document can be exported to an exterior program such as Open Book which then scans the document and is able to read it. Microsoft Word has a feature which can also convert the imaged material but it can be difficult to use. 2. When a document like this is opened, the only thing a Jaws user will hear is Alert! Empty document At that point, the new Document OCR can be very helpful. 1.Press Insert+Spacebar. Wait for the spoken confirmation, then press the letter D. A spoken confirmation will be heard: Document OCR Started. Please note. This process is very slow. Once it has started, there is no way to tell whether the process is working unless the user tries to Alt Tab away from that screen. In that event, a message is spoken: Document OCR In Progress. Gathering elements. If anyone would like a copy of it sent to them personally, I will be happy to do that. I believe what might be causing the concern expressed by some of the list members is the silence once the command is engaged and the length of time it takes to process a document. This is a five page document describing the condition of a house and detailing issues that the new owner might encounter. The results aren't perfect by any means but they are much better than anything OCR has been able to accomplish up till now. For the record, processing a five page imaged .pdf takes about two to three minutes. Once the operation is completed, Jaws begins reading immediately. Re: [JAWS-Users] Outlook 2007 help
Ann, You can create new rules easily when using the later versions of Outlook. I am referring to the e-mail sorting capability. Other rules and alerts can be created. CREATING A RULE IN MICROSOFT OUTLOOK: 1. Focus on the message on which you would like to create a rule. I use rules to divide the messages and send them to folders. 2. Press the Applications key or use Shift F10. 3. Down arrow until you hear Create Rule and press Enter on that option. 4. Outlook gives you several options you can use which includes simply sending that particular message directly to a folder. To create a rule, tab until you hear something like, When I get messages from, - - - - Edit that information until you have only what you need to sort the message. For example, jaws-users-boun...@jaws-users.com Further along in the same dialog, is a checkbox indicating Subject Contains. Using this option, you can edit the information to look for specific contents in the Subject field of any message. For example, I choose the name of the e-mail list and edit the field so that only that information is shown. 5. Continue tabbing until you locate the checkbox indicating Move To Folder and press spacebar to put a check there. 6. As soon as you check that option, you will be able to tab to a folder list. Press Enter on the folder name you would like to use. If you need to create a new folder, be sure to move up until you reach the top of your list marked Personal Folders. If you Shift Tab at that point, you'll reach the New option. Press Enter and add the folder name when prompted. In this way, your new folder will be a part of the main list, not a sub-folder created within an existing folder. 7. The focus will be returned to the option marked Move To Folder. Tab carefully through and make sure that the correct folder is chosen. Tab to Okay and press Enter. You may be asked if you'd like to apply the new rule to already existing messages. Press Enter and the new rule will be applied to the contents of your In Basket. IMPORTED RULES: There are rare occasions when a rule created in Outlook Express will work in Outlook but in most cases, they do not. One of the functions you will find in the Rules option is something called Manage Rules and Alerts. If you press Enter on this function, you will eventually come to a list of rules. You can delete any of those old Outlook rules here. You may need to use the Move Up and Move Down buttons if your list is extensive. When you press the Delete key, you will be asked to confirm your choice. In this section, you can also activate any or all of the rules you have created manually. MESSAGE CONTENT DISPLAYED: The Outlook defaults will usually provide most of the information you are looking for unless the View settings have been changed. Ann, be very careful with these settings. It is possible to inadvertently create a situation where your messages will not be read at all. There is a Restore To Default option. The condition of your screen will often determine how much information is being shown. When you open Outlook, make sure that the display is set on Full Screen, not Restored or one of the other options. You mentioned the .pst file. That file stores your Outlook environment. It contains a list of your folders and any other view options you may have chosen. The file is updated every time you open and close Outlook. I recommend that you do a file search and save a copy of the .pst file to another location before making any changes in the View settings. In that way, you can go back to the original by importing the .pst file you have saved. That is a fallback for you if you run into trouble with the settings in the View tab. The Import and Export options are located under the File tab on your navigation ribbon. I hope that this helps you, Ann. Someone else may have already answered your questions. Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Is there a way for JAWS to determine the completion status of a iPod syncing project?
Don, When I'm syncing my IPod 5th Generation, if I tab along, there is a section in ITunes which indicates the completion of the project by listing the percentages. 46% completed The display is similar to the one given which shows how much of a disk burn has been completed. That only works with ITunes in the most recent builds however. If your IPod has IOS 7, you should be able to find that information. However, if you are using an older IPod like Version 3, the information is not available in the same way. Re: [JAWS-Users] junk mail
Sugar, 1. Which operating system are you using? 2. Which version of Jaws do you have? 3. Finally, what are you using to read your e-mail? If you are using Microsoft Outlook, the problem is simple enough. But if you are using ILM, that might require a bit more manipulation. 4. Are there certain e-mail messages that are going to your Junk folder that you don't want to go there? If that's the case, with most decent e-mail programs, you can set things up so that the sender is not treated as Spam. I see not the stars, yet their majesty guides me. Hi Becky. If you are using a Desktop style keyboard, the suggestions made should work fine. Hold down Control and the Alt key. Press the right arrow twice. The first click will put it sideways and the second click should return everything to a normal display. It would be best, as was suggested by another member, that you have someone sighted around to confirm the setting. But as Linda and I know, that isn't always possible. [JAWS-Users] NOTES FOR OUTLOOK 2010 USERS, JUNK FOLDER OPTIONS
Hello group, I was having an awful time with messages from certain senders ending up in my Junk folder. I asked for help here but no one seemed to know the answer. I did receive a hint from another technology list and I thought it might be good to share it here. Outlook 2010 has a very capable Junk folder options list. Unlike earlier versions of this e-mail client, the Junk submenu provides ways to avoid having certain messages, diverted by the Spam filter, from ending up in the Junk folder in error. The Junk menu contains several options for adding people or domains to a Safe Senders list. That can be done manually if you have the correct e-mail or web address or it can be done automatically. 1.While in the Junk folder, press the Applications key or Shift F10. Locate the Junk submenu and press the right arrow to access it. 2. Press the down arrow and review the options which include never blocking sender, never blocking a domain and so on. 3. The original message will still remain in the folder unless it is deleted. Those options apply to any subsequent messages sent by a particular sender or domain. 4. Press Enter on the option that applies best to that particular message. The software will respond either with a message indicating that the sender or domain has been added to your Safe Senders list or requesting that the e-mail identity or domain be added manually. 5. In either case, an Okay button is provided. Press Enter to confirm the action. 6. If there are several messages from an e-mail list such as Jaws-Users and you want to move them to the appropriate folder, eliminate all of the other messages, then highlight all of those from that e-mail list. 7. Press the Applications key or Shift F10 and choose the Move option. A list of folders will be offered and you can move all of those messages into that folder at the same time. Now that I know how to do this, it seems so simple. But the key is knowing that such an option exists. I hope that this information helps someone else with a similar problem. Re: [JAWS-Users] New I tunes question
I hope you don't mind my butting in, here. As indicated in other messages, yes, you most definitely will need all of those files in order to have I Tunes work properly. FYI, I Tunes usually brings files into the system using a format called M4 A. That is not MP3. Some systems will not recognize it. The only way I know to bring those into the MP3 format is with some kind of converting software. For example, if you have Gold Wave on your system, you could record the song, then save it as an MP3. Re: [JAWS-Users] iTunes 11
A bit of a correction here. The hotkey combination for enabling the Sidebar in ITunes is Control S. It's a toggle so you can turn it off or on with the same combination. I have been studying I Tunes 11 and I found that some of the lists are set up in a horizontal display rather than in column format. This may confuse some users. The album list is now very prominent and that is something which is a recent development. You can still copy and paste items into a playlist but it isn't quite as easy as it was in earlier versions. You have to be sure to be in the correct display. The new I Tunes radio feature is now right out front and it is accessible by tabbing to that feature. However, here is a key thing I discovered. In order to access a particular part of I Tunes 11, you have to use the check mark feature to confirm that is what you want to see. Playlists, album lists, songs, books, movies and so on are all there but the layout is different in some respects. Maybe this will help or maybe it will only confuse you more but I hope not. It's a pretty good system once you get used to it. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are burning to a disk and it runs to more than one, be careful. There are messages which alert you if there's a problem but they're hard to find. Usually, the disk drawer will be ejected when the first disk is finished but not always. Look for an monitor the section of the display which tells you how much has been completed and what remains. Jaws will get a bit confused and sometimes read values which are already completed. Just listen for the lowest value or time remaining. That is usually the best way to deal with this. Navigating I Tunes 11 with Jaws is possible but it will take some patience and familiarity. [JAWS-Users] EASE OF ACCESS IN WINDOWS 8
I found that function by going to the Start page. As you know, if you start typing while on that display, it shifts automatically to the Search field. Type Ease Of Access and then use the up and down arrows to find the specific one we need. Tab over and you'll find an option which allows messages from Windows to be displayed at 7 seconds, 15 seconds and so on. Once set, I believe that it will stay there as it does with Windows 7. Andy, When you download those voices from the JFW site, it detects what kind of system you are using and provides the appropriate voice profiles. If I mislead anyone inadvertently, I apologize. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws not reading lower ribbon in Outlook 2010
I'd like to add something else to Mike's suggestion. There is a system based hotkey combination which will automatically minimize and expand the ribbons. It is Control-F1. This is a toggle command. However, this does appear to be an issue with Outlook 2010. I believe that you can save the Outlook environment in such a way that the ribbon function is deactivated. I have often wondered if that might not be better. I'm not sure how to do that but I was told that you can choose to use or not use the ribbon commands for each of the modules in Microsoft Office. [JAWS-Users] ODD PROBLEM WITH OUTLOOK 2010
I'm using Windows 7 Professional, Office 2010 Home Business and Jaws 15, latest build. I hadn't used this computer for quite a while. Now, when I try to open Outlook 2010, it takes a very long time, occasionally as much as 2 minutes. This is not a common occurrence on this machine. What could cause Outlook 2010 to slow down like that in the Startup? Here's what I have already tried. I went in and deleted all unnecessary files from the folders. I can't find any kind of diagnosing tools in the system but maybe I'm missing something. Will it be necessary to re-install this program? If so, do I have to re-install the entire Home Business 2010 or just the Outlook program, itself? Any help would be welcome. [JAWS-Users] WINDOWS 8, MY THANKS TO THE AUTHOR
Dave Ferin gave me the hint so I looked up David Bales and his incredible web site. I'd like to thank David and Dave personally for the recommendation. For anyone trying to learn Windows 8, this is a fantastic resource. David's guides are written in HTML format which can be a challenge at times with Jaws. Is there a way to convert HTML into text so that I can save and edit these files for personal use? David asks that anyone using or distributing these files provide recognition to him and the group he represents. I sincerely appreciate the work which has been done and have every intention of making use of those resources. Thanks David. I must agree with Rose, here. I have had no trouble with Jaws 14 and Office 2010. However, each of us may use the software in a different manner. The latest update seems to have corrected some of the more challenging elements. Computer problems are a complex element, made of two parts computer system issues, two parts user misunderstanding and one part a mystery which is rarely solved without tedium, blood, sweat and amazing luck.
