[JAWS-Users] Jaws and a braille display -- how to shift to the left
Hi All, I'm using the latest build of jaws with an 80 character focus display on a windows 7 laptop in my job as a mainframe programmer. When using the Reflexions emulation package the braille appears way to the right of the display using only perhaps the right most 25 cells and leaving the rest of the display blank. I don't have this problem in any other application. Outlook, Lync, Word etc. all make use of the entire display, but not the emulator. I tried tweaking the pixels per space setting and got some improvement. Adjusting from 10 to 8 pulled the braille to the left a few cells, but still half of the display isn't being utilized. I realize this is a pretty specific scenario and problem and that I will probably have to call tech support, but I thought I'd run it by you guys first since I often get better answers here than from FS itself. Any help is much appreciated. Kimber -- Kimberly For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] Nonuniform tables in email? What the heck?
Hi All, Today I tried to read an email in outlook, a thing I've done thousands, maybe millions of times before. Except today jaws is reporting that the email is a nonuniform table which makes it extremely hard to navigate and read. Does anyone have any idea what I may have inadvertently done to cause this behavior? Or how to undo it? [JAWS-Users] How to priortize search results in win 7
Hi All, Is it possible to prioritize which programs come to the top of search results in windows 7? For example, when I begin typing downloads in the search box, I would like the downloads folder to be the first suggestion in the list rather than the third or fourth. Is this possible? [JAWS-Users] Maybe OT: Dropbox on a win7 computer with jaws
Hi All, If this is totally off-topic, please accept my apologies and respond off-list if you can help. I have been trying to use dropbox on my windows 7 laptop. The install seemed to go okay as did starting up and syncing the first time I used it to sync a file. Ever since -- at least until I uninstalled -- dropbox refused to open with the shortcut on the desktop. When I looked in the systray, I saw that it was syncing, and syncing, and syncing. Now I was only trying to transfer a single very tiny file, so the sync should have not taken that long. Does amyome have any ideas about what's going wrong here? I know lots of people use dropbox very successfully and that I must be doing, or not doing something. Any help is appreciated. -- Kimberly For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Wayne, I'm afraid this is not very helpful, but I know exactly what you are talking about because it has happened to me too and not just in Word. I've had the same thing happen in Outlook. I'll be typing along then when I go back to proof what I've written, I sometimes find portions of my text in a completely different paragraph or line from where I intended. Go into basics under the file menu on the jaws screen and set your keyboard layout to laptop rather than desktop. [JAWS-Users] Solved my jaws 16 vs. 17 hotkey problem
Hi All, It took some time and poking around but I figured out the cause of my inability to reassign control-alt-J from version 16 to version 17. For some reason, and don't ask me why I did this, I had pinned jaws 16 to the taskbar. So when jaws 17 was running, I actually had two instances of jaws on my taskbar. Dave, you were right when you said I probably had two jaws icons hanging around. It was just the taskbar rather than the desktop where the problem was. As soon as I unpinned 16 from the taskbar I was able to successfully assign control-alt-J to jaws 17. Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions. You guys are the best. [JAWS-Users] Trouble assigning a hot key for jaws 17
Hi All, I had control-alt-J assigned as my hotkey for jaws 16, but I wanted to reassign it to jaws 17. I went into properties under jaws 16 and deleted the key assignment, only each time I try assigning that key combo to jaws 17 in the property dialogue, instead of assigning the keystroke it starts up jaws 16. When I open the property dialogue under 16, it shows no hotkey assigned. What am I missing? [JAWS-Users] Install of jaws 17.0.1806 caused all jaws versions to revert to 40 minute mode
Last night I installed version 17.0.1806 on my Lenovo laptop at home. To my dismay I found I had run out of activations so I attempted to switch back to version 16. I found that now all versions of jaws on that laptop are running in 40 minute mode. I dom't remember this being the case with other versions of jaws. Has anyone seen this behavior? Re: [JAWS-Users] Delete key question under jaws 17
I just spent some time on the phone with John Carson. We did a few test maneuvers and he says he thinks he's on the trail of the problem. He says he'll pass the issue along to development and let me know when they resolve it. I'm impressed with how quickly FS jumped on this problem and will keep the list posted on what happens. As a side note, the only change I regularly make in my attachmate configurations is unchecking the box to use the extended insert as a jaws key since I need it to function as an insert key. Re: [JAWS-Users] Delete key question under jaws 17
Adrian, I hadn't thought of that, but when I just tried it, the documentation reports that jaws should delete the character at the cursor then read the next character gaining focus. It doesn't do that. The documentation also says something about the functionality being controlled by the application which I don't understand. I guess I will make a report to FS. So annoying! [JAWS-Users] Delete key question under jaws 17
Hi All, I use an emulation package called attachmate to do programming. Under previous version of jaws (as recent as version 16), when I press the delete key, jaws would read the characters being deleted. With version 17, jaws says "delete" each time the delete key is pressed which is totally useless information. Is there some way to get this functionality back? This problem is sufficiently annoying that it could keep me from using jaws 17 unless I can figure out a solution. Thanks for your thoughts. [JAWS-Users] Hardware decTalk -- is it still usable?
Hi All, I was cleaning out my office the other day (they are giving us new carpet at work), and I found an old hardware DecTalk with a serial connector. Now aside from the connector issue, is the hardware DecTalk even supported anymore by Jaws? If so, is there a converter that will allow me to connect it to my laptop? In my opinion, the hardware DecTalk was the best speech ever so I am really hoping it is still a viable option. Thanks for any info. [JAWS-Users] Excel thinks it knows what I want to type but it's wrong
Hi All, This seems like it should be simple, but it's driving me crazy. I'm entering data on an excel spreadsheet. Column A contains days of the week. Column B contains dates like 9/16. Column C contains hours worked for each day/date. However when I attempt to enter a simple numeric value in column C, excel keeps changing it to a date. I've tried deleting the contents of column C and retyping. I've tried deleting the contents of column B (the actual date), entering the hours then retyping the date. Nothing is working. Excel keeps changing my hours to dates. How can I fix this? It's making me crazy! I have some very good and detailed instructions for creating ring tones which I can send you off-list, if you would like. Just let me know. As for your question, and I am going from memory here so beware ... If you put focus on the track you want to turn into a tone then press the context key, there's an option for get info or something like that. There are several tabs under that selection and the one you want is called something like options. In there you find some checkboxes for start time and end time along with the default values. You'll have to tab around play to get what you want but it's there. Sorry I can't be more exact, but I'm not on the computer where I have iTunes installed. In version 17, when I check the box to differentiate between numpad and extended keys, my insert key does not insert and my delete key when pressed, simply says "delete" rather than speaking the characters being deleted. I didn't have this problem in either version 15 or 16. Thanks, Kimber -- Kimberly For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] Forms mode problems when switching between versions of jaws
Hi All, In version 17 I have set forms mode to semi-auto because I can't get manual to work consistently. However, when I unload version 17 and load version 15, I am unable to activate forms mode at all. Can anyone confirm this behavior? [JAWS-Users] Links not activating in Outlook 2013 messages
Hi All, I've had this problem for quite a while but have just gotten around to posting about it. Frequently when I get email from a company like Audible for example, and the email contains links that are identified as graphic links by Jaws, I am unable to activate the link no matter what I do. Enter does nothing, Jaws cursor and left click does nothing. I know the links are good because I can forward the email to my gmail account (accessed on the web) and activate them there. Is this an Outlook issue? A Jaws issue? Something up with my security settings? Can anyone give me a clue what might be going on here? And maybe how to fix it? Thanks for any thoughts. How do you accomplish the cut and paste if the link doesn't appear as an address? For example, I might come across a link that says link graphic recommended for you. It doesn't show as a listed link and can't be reached with the tab key either. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS says new paragraph and new line in word document
Hi Neil, You can stop the announcement of "new paragraph" but the only way I know to do it is from within Word itself. Press alt F for the file tab. Jaws will not announce anything, but never mind that, you are in the correct place. Arrow up two or three times to options then press the spacebar. You will be placed in a selection of categories. Arrow down once to display. Tab through the options until you reach a checkbox for paragraph marks and uncheck it with the spacebar. Now you will no longer hear the announcement of new line and new paragraph. I hope this helps. Re: [JAWS-Users] I will pay someone to help me with face book with jaws
I feel like I have a lot more control in Firefox than in IE. I can more easily keep track of where I am on various pages, update status and make comments on the status of others. It seems like navigation is smoother too. Don't misunderstand, Facebook is still no picnic. But it's usable and I don't end up tearing out my hair with frustration. FB is only thing I use Firefox for, so it isn't that I am against internet explorer. Quite the contrary. But I suggest giving it a try. Re: [JAWS-Users] outlook 2013 navigating between email accounts
Kimsan, I have a similar arrangement within Outlook on my laptop. What I do is move to the top of the folders list then press the first key of the account I want to access. For example, if you have two accounts one called Kimsan and the other called Workmail, pressing W will take you to that account then you can arrow down once to get to the workmail inbox. It will still be called inbox when you get there, but at least you're certain of which account you're accessing. It's not a perfect solution, but it works for me. Well, the other way to handle it would be to simply press K twice to reach the second K account. Yeah, it's an extra keystroke but it will get you to the right spot without arrowing through all your folders. This is what you have to do to change the account name in the navigation pane. If you are using a POP3 account or personal folders (*.pst), you can change the name that displays in the folder list and navigation pane using this method: 1.Right-click on the data file name you want to change and choose Data File Properties (Properties in older versions of Outlook). 2.Click the Advanced button on the Properties dialog 3.Change the names in the in the Data File Dialog On 10/6/15, Kimsan <kimsans...@outlook.com> wrote: > Yep, pressing K twice is not favorable for me lol. > > I just changed my work email to work but it still begins with "k" and this > is even after restarting outlook. > Not a hill I choose to die on but if I figure something, I'll just make the > change. > Kimsan Song > kimsans...@outlook.com > > -Original Message- > From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On > Behalf Of Kimber Gardner > Sent: Tuesday, October 6, 2015 9:11 AM > To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com > Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] outlook 2013 navigating between email accounts > > Well, the other way to handle it would be to simply press K twice to reach > the second K account. Re: [JAWS-Users] creating a signature in Outlook 2010
Hi, This may seem a bit convoluted, but it's not too bad really. Create a new message -- alt H, N Go to the insert tab -- alt N and arrow down once to the incllude box Arrow right until you reach the signature dropdown and press enter. You'll find yourself on the word signatures followed by an ellipses. Press enter. You are now in the email signatures tab. Tab three or four times until you get to the "new" button and press enter. Once you've done that, you will be in an edit box where you want to type the name of the signature, like My Sigline or whatever. Type the name then tab to ok and hit enter. Now you will find yourself in a tab with all sorts of options like which account you want the new signature associated with, the font, alignment, whether you want the signature added to replies or forwards etc. The last tab before ok is the edit box where you will type the text of the signature. Once you type the text, tab to ok and press enter. If you have questions, let me know. To turn off the preview pane in Outlook 2010, do the following: Go to the View tab by pressing Alt V then the letter V. Tab over to Other Settings and press the spacebar. Now tab until you reach the radio buttons for how you want to handle the auto preview pane. Select the button for no auto preview then tab to ok. I think that will do what you want. This also applies to Outlook 2013. One thing to be aware of, I think you have to do these steps for each folder individually. Re: [JAWS-Users] question about Excel and JAWS
There is a way to make jaws read column and row titles as you arrow around your spreadsheet. It's been a long time since I set it up and I can't recall exactly how I did it, but there are some pretty instructions in the jaws help files specific to excel. Kimber On 7/1/15, dacia.l...@gmail.com dacia.l...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, what I am one thing, is for it to read the column and row titles as headings. Re: [JAWS-Users] Using Netflix with JAWS
Hi Tim, A while back someone (I think it was Rex) posted these instructions for using jaws with Netflix. They're pretty good and should get you going so you can start watching. *** Hey all, I wrote this little tutorial to help Jaws users effectively navigate NetFlix. Hope this is helpful to some. You can access Netflix, start and stop play, move forward and back and use the video play controls but it does take a little enginuity. Let's say we want to watch House MD. We log into netflix, click on our profile name and then click on the search link. Type in House MD and press enter. Now you arrow down until you find something that says graphic House MD. Right below that is a link that says Y Player. If you click that link, the playback will start where you last left off. If this is the first time you have clicked on a movie or series, it will start with the first episode or at the beginning of the movie. We'll get to the playback options in a minute. Let's assume that you want to access the list of episodes for a particular series. Using our House MD example, arrow back up to the area that says graphic House MD. It may say something a little different on your computer but the idea is that you find the graphic for the show you're trying to access. Now, press home to make sure you're on the graphic. route Jaws to PC with insert+[, access the Jaws cursor with insert+p and then use insert+8 to leftclick. This should cause a link to the show to appear further down the page. Arrow down through the information and go past service code and copyright info. You should reach a link to the show. Click that link. Now you can move around and look at the episodes in the season you've reached. If this is your first time accessing the show, you'll be on season 1. To change seasons arrow down past recommend to a friend and you will hear season 1. Press enter on the number of the season. This will cause a list of seasons to come up. Press enter on the season you want. Now just find the show you want to listen to and arrow down one time to the play link and press enter. Now, press insert+z to turn virtual PC cursor off. Press the tab key and you should hear something like scrubber ... press shift+tab to go back and you'll be in the play options area. Press the upp arrow to increase the volume, down arrow to decrease, spacebar to stop and start and left and right arrows to move through the show. If you move forward or backward, you may need to press the spacebar to start play because it will stop when you arrow through the show. There are some other things you can do in this area. Just explore by tabbing through the page. Remember that your virtual cursor is turned off. When you're ready to leave that page, be sure and turn it back on. This may require a little trial and error on your part but you can quickly master the netflix system. On 5/15/15, Tim Ford ttf...@gmail.com wrote: Hello All, My daughter just set me up with my own profile on Netflix. I was able to pick my profile, although JAWS did not say it was a link, just a graphic, but a left mouse click command on the keyboard did open my profile. Below each show title is a link to Y Player, and when I select that, I get a screen where only the Netflix title appears, no links or anything. [JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 frequently goes silent
Recently I began consistently using jaws 16 and I'm seeing some odd behavior which I wonder if anyone can confirm. During remote sessions using VPN, jaws 16 frequently goes absolutely silent for minutes at a time. Occasionally speech will return if I wait long enough, but often I have to reboot the computer before I am able to regain speech. This same behavior would sometimes occur with older versions of jaws (prior to jaws 15), but then it seemed to be fixed. I work from home several days a week, signed on to my desktop at work and these frequent silences are very disruptive, not to mention the reboots. Has anyone else seen this behavior with jaws 16? I intended to report it to FS, but I'm not sure even how to explain it since it seems to happen randomly without regard to what application I may be using at the time. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 frequently goes silent
How do you find the program in the list when there is no speech? Sometimes when this happens at home I can turn on NVDA and it gets things untangled. But I am not allowed to have NVDA on my work computers, so there goes that workaround. I too have seen the skipped characters (most often in Outlook), as well as my cursor moving eradically around the document so characters I have typed come out all jumbled up. This happens only with jaws version 16. On 5/5/15, Annette Carr amca...@verizon.net wrote: Yes, I am seeing similar issues. It seems like the computer is hanging up, so JAWS does not speak, and I can't switch to another open application. The silences range from 3 seconds to 34 seconds today. I am continuing to have random occurrences of spaces missing from e-mail replies that I create, and random 1-3 letters will be missing from what I am typing in the body of Outlook messages and in Word Documents. I've got an open ticket with FS regarding all of this. The problems were happening with JAWS14 and FS said that I had to update to JAWS 16. After battling my employer over this, JAWS16 was installed and the problems still existed. Went back to FS and was told that I had to install the next update and the problem would go away. I have since installed the last 2 updates, with absolute no improvement. I am trying to schedule a phone conference between FS and my IT department, but it is like herding cats. [JAWS-Users] Unable to locate an attachment in outlook 13
Hi All, Despite my subject line, this issue occurs in both outlook 2010 and 2013 so ... There are times when I receive an email with an attachment, but no matter what I do I am unable to either find or locate that attachment. Most of the time I have no problem with attachments, either finding or opening them. But it seems that from certain coworkers I have the problem all the time. Does this have to do with how they are making the attachment? Or something else? It's incredibly frustrating for both me and the person who sends me the attachments because I can't tell them why their attachments are inaccessible. Has anyone else seen this? And more to the point, can you explain why this happens and how to remedy it?
