Re: [JAWS-Users] update
No, it's not the spring release; that hasn't come out quite yet. The naming conventions for Windows 10 update releases is: First two digits signify the release year; Second two digits indicate the month. Hence, 1709 was released in September, 2017 -- and is otherwise known as the Fall update. Re: [JAWS-Users] update progress with win10?
Hi Adam and everyone, In this case, MS is wrong: up until Version 1703, you'll get a progress bar when downloading and installing all updates. Starting with Version 1709, you'll get status messages for individual updates. Also, JAWS needs to support UIA progress bars and certain events coming from universal apps such as Settings app in order to tell you what's going on. Unfortunately, from time to time, Windows ships with broken UIA implementations, including a case where progress bar values will change along with download/install status text, which is annoying (fixed in 1709 but it also introduced a bug of its own). Speaking of NVDA, I am the one who brought you update status message announcements (ask me offlist if interested). Cheers, Joseph -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Fernando Gregoire Sent: Friday, October 20, 2017 7:25 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] update progress with win10? Microsoft Disability Answer Desk is partially correct. The stable (released to the general public) versions of Windows 10 from which the update to version 1709 is downloaded show update progress, but only a general one and not for each update separately, therefore if there are more than one update available you'll be unable to check individually the progress of version 1709. Insider builds (those targetted to techies who want to test Windows beta versions) show progress for each update separately inside the list item of each update; you can see this info with JAWS by using the Touch Cursor with Advanced Object Navigation enabled. In any case, unlike NVDA and Windows Narrator, JAWS is currently unable to report the progress automatically as it does in traditional (remember that Settings is actually an Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app), so if using JAWS you need to check the progress manually, even when Progress Bar Announcement in JAWS is turned on. Another alternative is to use the Media Creation Tool to download an ISO file for the language and architecture you want and then mount and install the ISO manually. Since the Media Creation Tool is a desktop app, JAWS will read the download progress correctly. In the installation program the percentage is said in text instead of a progress bar; no screen reader can therefore report the change, but you can press INSERT+B or use JAWS/Invisible Cursor even if you don't have JAWS 2018. Re: [JAWS-Users] update progress with win10?
Hi Adrian, While before the latest update released on October 27 only Windows 10 beta versions displayed progress for each update separately and this was similar to Windows 7, the way used to get that information on W7 is not applicable to Windows 10 for a couple of reasons: 1. Windows 10 have neither the update progress icon on the System Tray or the Open Windows Update option in the Action Center context menu. 2. In Windows 10 the Windows Update functionality is witting the Settings app, which is an “Universal” app. Therefore, you can't use JAWS Cursor to review information. 3. In addition to the need of using Touch Cursor to get to the update progress information, for some kind of bug, unlike NVDA and even the Windows Narrator, JAWS does not read the progress information automatically as it changes, even when Progress Bar Announcement option is turned on. 4. Although this is not a percentage, in Windows 10, unlike 7, you never know which update related to the total is being downloaded or installed. As you know, Windows 7 display strings like “Downloading Name of the Update (update 2 of 9);” those strings, however, are not present in Windows 10. 2017-10-20 10:05 GMT-03:00 Adrian Spratt: > Adam, > I'm using windows 7, and I can confirm that a Windows Update is > downloading and even get some information on progress, although if more > than one update is involved, the percentage indication is limited to each > item, not the whole set of downloads. > In Win7, I do the following: > JAWS key+F11 for the system tray. > Arrow down to something like "Update is ready" and press enter. Re: [JAWS-Users] update progress with win10?
Adam, I'm using windows 7, and I can confirm that a Windows Update is downloading and even get some information on progress, although if more than one update is involved, the percentage indication is limited to each item, not the whole set of downloads. In Win7, I do the following: JAWS key+F11 for the system tray. Arrow down to something like "Update is ready" and press enter. (I don't have one in my system tray now, so I can't give you the exact wording. However, MS is not named.) Now I press tab until I come across the system tray list in button form. Once again, I locate that "Update" item and press enter. >From here on, I can get JAWS to verbalize update progress by pressing JAWS >key+tab. I hope I've correctly remembered these steps. Re: [JAWS-Users] Update your Freedom Scientific products before the W-10 creators update
My only question with using previous versions of Jaws was related to reading .PDF documents while using Windows 10. I have found that I have several .PDF documents that JAWS 15 and above, especially JAWS 18, will eliminate necessary information when reading. The only way I can get all of the information I need in the document is when I use JAWS 14. Since one of these documents relates to my bank statement and several others relate to other documents where I need all of the information read to me, I was wondering what will happen when I need to switch to Windows 10 and have no choice but to use a later version of JAWS when reading these documents. Hi Rose, Not sure what you are responding to. Vicky ask in her email quote: What about people who use JAWS 14? I switch back and forth for reasons that are related to reading certain documents correctly. What if I update to Windows 10? Will JAWS 14 work correctly with the updated version of Windows 10? I informed her she could not use Jaws 14 with W10 and she had to use the latest versions of Jaws 16,17 or 18. So I am not quite understanding your snippy one sentence response. I thought we were suppose to help answer question on this group. Re: [JAWS-Users] Update your Freedom Scientific products before the W-10 creators update
Hi Kathy, this means if you are using a W-10 computer, you need to update all the Freedom Scientific products on it before April eleventh. The new creators update will start installing on all W-10 computers starting on the eleventh. So Jaws 18, is already updated for this Creators update as of the February update to Jaws. But if you have Jaws 16 or Jaws 17 installed on your W-10 computer, they must be updated before the Creators update to work correctly on your machine. I hope this helps explain it to you a little better. Smiles. Your humble pinhead! Owner of the W-10 and Jaws Yahoo group! Thanks Mike. Justin -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B. Sent: Thursday, August 11, 2016 11:29 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] update now available to speakDropbox fixingwin10 anniversary update bugs Hi Justin, Hope the following explains it well enough: Welcome! Welcome and thanks for trying out SpeakDropbox. For other applications that I've written see my web site at http://valiant8086.com What is this thing anyway? SpeakDropbox is a lightweight application that runs on the system tray and looks for a Dropbox icon in said tray. If found, it watches the tool tip text for that icon and can automatically read it out loud or play sounds when there is a change to said tool tip text. As a result, SpeakDropbox is able to announce out loud or produce alert noises when the Dropbox app is up to something like downloading a file, uploading a file, indexing, connecting, downloading file list, etc. Additionally, it allows for manual checking of said tool tip from anywhere with a configurable keystroke (especially useful when using sounds only and wanting to find out what Dropbox is up to when you hear one of the sounds), and a double press provides an easy way to open the Dropbox menu from anywhere without the need of using "system tray listing" functionality in your screen reader or simulating a click on the Dropbox tray icon. SpeakDropbox will probably be most useful for people who are blind or visually impaired and using a Screen Reader like NVDA (Non Visual Desktop Access), as it uses the Screen Reader to provide the speech output. however, it will speak via the Microsoft Speech API 5 or later using the computer's built in voice if there is no Screen Reader that it supports present. In other words, if you're not blind, or visually impaired, or if you have a screen reader that SpeakDropbox does not support, you may still have use for this application. Requirements list of 3 items . Same as Dropbox for windows itself . Dropbox, of course click here to visit their web site . if using with screen reader, SpeakDropbox supports the following list of 4 items nesting level 1 1. JAWS, not sure how far back, 10 at least 2. Window-Eyes, no clue how far back, I'm guessing earlier than 7.0 3. System Access, to my knowledge it's not really possible to be running an old system access so how far back is not applicable 4. Dolphin Supernova and Hal, no clue what version, most likely it'll work though is my guess list end nesting level 1 The reason I'm not totally sure about how far back these go is I didn't write the code I use to access the screen readers and the documentation for that doesn't tell me. If you're using something ancient and you wonder, try it and see if it works. Installation Run the installer. It will want administrator privileges, so if you have user account control turned on, the UAC prompt will come up. Follow the installation wizard to choose where to install it and where to put the start menu shortcuts and whether you want SpeakDropbox to start automatically each time your computer is started. the installer will give you a chance to check all the settings made. If all is well, hit install. Installation should take about 10 seconds. On the last page there is the opportunity to choose whether to start SpeakDropbox immediately, view documentation and view the change log to see what's new. how it works SpeakDropbox will hang out in your system tray and look for a Dropbox icon. if it can find one, it will watch for that icon to change it's tool tip. When SpeakDropbox detects a change to the Dropbox icon, it will automatically read out what the tool tip now says, after stripping some of the information away so as not to be rattling on about transfer rates and the like as that every time the speed changes which, for most people, is pretty much continuously. It can also play a non obtrusive sound to alert you when something is happening, either in addition to or alternatively to the spoken output. These can both be disabled in the tray menu, enabling for use of SpeakDropbox to have quick read outs of the Dropbox icon only when desired, by pressing the keyboard shortcut, and having the ability to open the Dropbox menu and Dropbox folder but not having to put up with continuous Dropbox status updates. If it can't find a Dropbox tray icon, it will announce "No Dropbox Icon found". It should be able to pick up the icon automatically if you start Dropbox after already having SpeakDropbox running. Also it should be able to pick it up again if you have to exit and restart Dropbox and you leave SpeakDropbox running. You can click or press space or enter on the SpeakDropbox icon in the tray to bring up a menu of options that will allow you to make SpeakDropbox: list of 4 items nesting level 1 . test the speech output . toggle settings, like whether to Automatically speak or pla
Re: [JAWS-Users] update now available to speakDropbox fixing win10 anniversary update bugs
Hi. My first guess is that it's right about the setup files being corrupted. Can you try redownloading again? If you manually run the installer, you'll need to manually close speakDropbox before it can install. To do that hit the context key on speakDropbox in the system tray and choose exit, or Assuming the screen reader is JAWS, insert+f11, arrow down to speakDropbox, tab once and hit space on right single click, then up arrow to exit. If you tried self updating by hitting enter on the speakDropbox version in the speakDropbox tray menu, you might be able to try again by just hitting that again, I'm not sure if it would redownload it or use the existing download. The only other possibility that comes to mind could be some kind of antimalware application is thinking that speakDropbox is a virus or something along that line and modifying the installer in some way without making it obvious to the user what's going on. http://valiant8086.com/applications/speakDropbox Cheers, Aaron Spears, general Partner - Valiant Galaxy Associates Developing "very good audiogames" for the blind community http://valiantGalaxy.com Sent with Thunderbird 38.5.0 portable On 8/12/2016 7:16 AM, patti wrote: Aaron I did the update on my laptop, and I got this message. Re: [JAWS-Users] update now available to speakDropbox fixing win10 anniversary update bugs
Hi. Welcome to my world. That happened to me too. Maybe restarting the computer will work. I ended up finding the speakDropbox context menu on my touch screen, because it wouldn't put keyboard focus in the window, which so far as I know is no fault of speakDropbox. When you hit the context key on speakDropbox or do what ever it takes to activate the menu, the menu may open but doesn't gain keyboard focus for some odd reason, there's no way with the keyboard so far as I can find to focus it, and once it is open speakDropbox is stuck, it locks up when that menu is open. So yeah, there may be tricks to get it to happen but just a computer restart might get it working long enough to update. By the way, if you're updating it with the downloaded installer, you could kill speakDropbox from task manager in order to be able to get the installer to run, that should work fine. Re: [JAWS-Users] Update On Outlook 2016 Folder Display Issue And System Restore
Allen: You are correct. Control shift tab also gets us to the Outlook folder list, so this is another workaround, in addition to control Y, and shift F6. It's good to have these possibilities, for sure. I haven't discovered anything else broken in Outlook 2016, but time will tell, I guess. At least Jaws tech support and Microsoft are aware of the shift-tab issue. Re: [JAWS-Users] Update w10
Hi, I had not gotten the update yet either, today, in Columbus, Ohio. I went ahead and used the media creation tool with out a hitch to upgrade both of my laptops this afternoon. You just have to uninstall JAWS and the JAWS mirror display driver, and use Narrator to upgrade with the media creation tool, and you will be up and going in a couple of hours. Just reinstall JAWS, and all will work well. Take care, David Moore -Original Message- From: Holger Fiallo Sent: Friday, August 5, 2016 6:42 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Update w10 Had not heard from anyone regarding my question. Hi Jim, Thank you so much for your directions. Last night, by using your directions that you put on here, I was able to upgrade both of my laptops to the win10 anniversary update. Now, I am figuring this out, and having a lot of fun with Narrator. Take care, everybody. Anyway, having spent far too many hours on this needlessly-created issue so far, I decided to call the Microsoft Accessibility Hotline for assistance. It turns out that somehow, the "get windows 10" message, and associated files had been installed on my computer in several different locations. It took the accessibility specialist a full hour to get everything properly uninstalled and operating as it should. I couldn't tell for sure, but I even think the accessibility specialist was getting frustrated at several points. I used this situation as an opportunity to let her know in no uncertain terms that Microsoft is not making any friends among blind computer users who are being harassed repeatedly with the "get windows 10" message, and that I would hope this could somehow be taken into consideration. I am sure, as someone else pointed out, this complaint and my situation will not mean diddley to Microsoft. But, I would urge anyone with this issue to contact the Accessibility Hotline, rather than trying to go it alone with only frustration as the end result. At least, this is my suggestion at this time, based on my recent experience. Re: [JAWS-Users] Update On "Get Windows 10" Saga
This is exactly why I continue to be so disturbed by this entire scenario. I can assure you that if the "get windows 10" notification re-appears on my computer, the Microsoft Accessibility Support line will get another call from me, and I will not be happy. I always teach my studednts and my children to choose their battles, but this is a battle that I feel must be engaged in. I find it totally un-acceptable not to have the complete and free choice of whether or not to install an operating system, or any software program for that matter. And, to be constantly harassed if you do not is totally un called-for. Hi, It makes no difference (so far as getting the upgrade is concerned), whether you have JAWS active on your computer or not, so long as you in the past had purchased JAWS. Also, and precise details of this ought to be verified officially or by recourse to the pertinent or relevant links on the FS Website, although you don't pay the full price for the missing version, you do pay an increased 'premium' because of the extra version upgrae entailed, regardless of any SMA you might then pay for. )Rough example: Instead of paying $240 for an upgrade through two versions, the first of which you didn't buy, you will be paying $190/$200 for said upgrade, before the cost of a requested SMA would be added afterwards. -Original Message- From: Mike Boyd Sent: Thursday, March 05, 2015 3:59 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] update You can upgrade your JAWS at any time as long as you have an active version running on your computer, and you are still in the Freedom Scientific data base as a current user. Re: [JAWS-Users] update
You can upgrade your JAWS at any time as long as you have an active version running on your computer, and you are still in the Freedom Scientific data base as a current user. The upgradee will cost you the new price for the version which you are running, plus the cost of the SMA if you choose to purchase that as well. Mine opened up in the script manager when I did it that way but the script didn't compile like I said before. You need to change your file associations, try opening a JSS file from within the script manager. With luck that will fix that minor issue. Re: [JAWS-Users] Update to latest build of Jaws 14 strange issues
Hi, Downloading all JF isn't solution. Why download for example if I am connected through mobile or 3g. Why isn't published only the small package or all installer. The installer of update isn't downloading all JF from the web only the update. This was the first time I ever had problems updating from within Jaws help menu. I went to the site and downloaded but my update feature, as of Sunday, Aug 25, said I had the latest version. Re: [JAWS-Users] Update to latest build of Jaws 14 strange issues
Yes, Bharat. I was not connected to internet during the first install effort, and I did get an error message which said three files could not be installed- and JFW did not work at all- not even a little bit. I wanted to wait to connect to the internet until I had JFW and anti-virus installed first. The error message sounded like it was referring to the same files you mentioned- but since all I had was Narrator to speak what was happening, I did not get the spelling of the file names. I have trained many students on JAWS and probably installed it hundreds of times- and this error was totally new in my experience. Strangely, the update hadn't been reflecting in y automatic or manual check for updates, so i had to manually download the same. after i downloaded it tried to install it, the installer started downloading something. I virtualised the window got the below message: Downloading vcredist2005_x86 it then installed the software. my question is, why did it have to download this component. wht would have happened if i weren't connected to the internet. would the installation have failed? Please suggest if anyone of you also faced this issue the probable fix for avoiding this in future. I must mention here that, i am not really facing any issue but am just wondering, why JAWS would have needed to download this component probablly more, since all i was doing was installing an update. thank you, bharat.
