Mike, can't remember what engine or carb you have. Pulling the power
back and having the engine stumble sounds suspiciously like the problem
I had with my VW with the Zenith carb that went very rich and fouled
plugs at mid throttle settings. I confirmed what the problem was by
installing a mixture meter as many others here also suggest.

I started descending back to the pattern with carb heat on. I was going
to extend the downwind to give me a long approach so I pushed carb heat
off and added throttle. Started a turn to base and that's when things
went bad. The engine started stumbling, needless to say, the funny thing
is that I was more worried about destroying the plane than I was getting
hurt. I had been in contact with my friend on the ground, calling out
temps, pressures and pilot status. I told him I had a Mayday situation

I used a portion of a leaf spring from a very old automobile
(1920's). I cut it with a hacksaw and cold bent it in a big a** vise
using a pipe for leverage. I dressed it down to accept the tail
wheel assembly.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/32133949/IMG_8714.JPG

I later replaced the solid 4" wheel with a 6 inch pneumatic wheel
from Matco and love it.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/32133949/IMG_8760.JPG

The spring seems to be about right for a KR in the 700 to 750 pound
range. A spring slightly too stiff rather than too springy seems the
way to go. Any good leaf spring in the 1 3/4" by 1/4" thick range
should work. Check out the springs on an old junk golf cart.

2016-10-30 Thread Mike Sylvester
OK Guys, Now that I'm down from a near adrenaline overdose (LOL). This is my
story.

I have been tail up taxiing for several weeks and was feeling pretty confident
that I could keep it on the runway. There was another issue that was dealing me
fits and that was nerves. I kept coming up with excuse after excuse not to fly.
I kept dwelling on what could go wrong, this is pretty serious stuff when you
think about it. I finally decided no more excuses, the winds where going to be
favorable Friday evening. I made sure the wife knew all the pertinent
information. Called a trusted friend to be my ground crew and to call the
rescue people if needed. Game on. Climbed in about 5 pm yesterday, fired her up
and taxied to the runway knowing there was no turning back this time. The crazy
thing was that the nervousness was gone. All business now. A quick run up and
let her roll out to 04. Throttle up, tail up, more throttle and she's pulling a
lot harder than my 150 with the same engine. She made a funny bounce and I
thought she wanted to fly, I was right, back on the stick and I was in the air.
I held her down for a couple of seconds before starting a 100 mph climb out. I
could not believe how simple that was and that I was not over controlling the
plane. All of my fears of POH and rolling her upside down on takeoff were gone.
I let her climb to three thousand feet while circling the field, pulled the
throttle back to around 2500 while leveling out. Checked speed, 140 mph without
the paints or spinner. Thinking that I would have to make several attempts at
landing and feeling pretty confident about the handling of the plane, I started
descending back to the pattern with carb heat on. I was going to extend the
downwind to give me a long approach so I pushed carb heat off and added
throttle. Started a turn to base and that's when things went bad. The engine
started stumbling, needless to say, the funny thing is that I was more worried
about destroying the plane than I was getting hurt. I had been in contact with
my friend on the ground, calling out temps, pressures and pilot status. I told
him I had a Mayday situation with engine dying, his response was, Get it down!
I had already started a turn to final, realizing that I could make the runway
all thoughts went to Oh Shit, I've only got 1 chance to land a plane that I've
never landed before. was this really happening ? I was way high once I knew I
could make it, engine still surging, Pulled it back to idle, checked speed,140
mph, Raised nose to slow to 120 mph, lowered speed brake, nosed it over hard
and the brake did it's job. Stayed at 120 aiming for end of runway, started
leveling out and crossed the numbers at 100, I held it off the runway letting
the brake slow her down while making sure not to move the stick, she finally
settled onto the runway, added some forward stick and basically nailed a
perfect landing letting her roll till the tail dropped. Engine ran great
taxiing back to hanger. Did a quick run up and no problems. After a lot of
discussion, We are blaming pilot error. While I was cruising at reduced power
setting, I had leaned the engine, I think I had more throttle than the lean jet
could handle when I tried to extend the down wind or possibly carb icing.
Lesson learned.

Probably too lean...I'd keep it close to full rich unless it's stumbling
or something, until you can get it to altitude and see how far out you
can lean it before a cylinder starts missing. Are you sure you're
getting full travel on the mixture lever with your control knob? It
didn't seem like enough travel, but that's all dependent on the
geometry, so maybe so. I really doubt it could ice up that quickly,
especially with the temps we've had lately.

Anytime the engine starts stumbling, my number one suspect is mixture.
This is where one glance at the mixture meters usually clears the matter
up in a microsecond...

I concur with that. I did 10 or 12 on my Sonerai 2. When I came in over the
fence with oil on the windshield the landing configuration was familiar and
the resulting landing though blind in front was a good one. Get very
familiar with the ground cues.

Great to hear Mark. We've been lucky enough with the weather here in Kansas
City I've been able to fly the last two weekends. Had to replace a flat tube in
one tire, but other than that my plane is flying great. Maybe once you get
settled in in Florida you can host a winter KR Gathering for the rest of us to
come visit you!

I chipped away the ice from the bottom of my hanger door this morning. Took me
about 3 hours with a manual ice spade. Good workout on the arms. For the first
time since December 19 my ?Deer Slayer? KR saw the open skies. After a
preflight inspection she came to life after a little coaxing and away we went.
We bored holes all through the sky looking at the horizon in every direction.

KR> First flight of 2015

2015-01-18 Thread Mark Jones
Woke up this morning to clear skies and 31 degrees with a front moving in
rapidly. I knew I had to fly. I managed to get to the airport about 8:30 and
prepped my "Deer Slayer" KR for flight. She fired up around 9:15 and the winds
were at 7 mph and gusting to 19 mph as the front was approaching. As I fueled
up the edge of the front crossed the airport and it went from clear skies to
5000 overcast. Once done with the fueling I called taxing to runway 30 and
headed out. After I did my run up I checked the winds once more and they were
now 9 gusting 21 from 260. Away I went for a very smooth climb out and with the
head winds a very short take off roll at that. I flew around the local area for
about 45 minutes as the skies continued to deteriorate so I finally decided to
head back in. Checked the winds and they were back to 7 gusting 17 from 270.
Called in the approach and greased her right in for a smooth landing on 30.
Can't wait till the next opportunity presented itself to sneak in another
flight in my KR. For those of you who are new and do not know why my KR is
called the Deer Slayer check out this link:

My first flight of the year, 1/11/2015

with my oldest 12 year old son, Juan Eduardo, we flew to San Nicolas, Buenos
Aires landing and come back to San Pedro, the flight was 50 minutes on very hot
day, 95? f out and 101? f into the cockpit
San Pedro landing was at 1470 feet over the soft runway (grass), in San Nicolas
was at 990 feet with a density altitude of 2170 feet.
the climb was very soft to keep oil temperature below 248? f, the cruiser to
1500 feet was comfortable if we forget the heat.

KR> First flight of the year

2015-01-02 Thread Robert7721
Managed to get in a quick flight myself yesterday. More to ensure the airplane
doesn't get neglected and shake off the rust of my flying abilities. Only about
a half hour, but still felt great to do it. It was still pretty cold at 20
degrees F so I did a pre-heat on the engine before starting. Still took a
little bit of effort to get her warmed up and running smoothly. Once warmed up
she ran great.

I've been running Foreflight on the Ipad now for a couple years and love it. I
haven't bought a paper sectional since then. I was always extremely difficult
to use a paper map in a KR anyway. Just try and flip it over while flying, next
thing I know I'm doing unusual attitude recovery training. I see they have
added new EFIS functions lately and believe the IPAD is now a great poor man's
Attitude indicator. Would not want to actually fly IFR, but as a tool - great
stuff. I hadn't heard they had worked out how to use one for engine monitoring
- that would be excellent.

Well, since Mark Jones didn't pipe up with "first flight of the year"
news, I guess I should take up his slack. I flew 1.8 hours today, doing
10 landings at three airports. N891JF has been down a few weeks, as I
had to send my iEFIS and iBox back to MGL for some maintenance. I still
haven't swapped out the brakes, because I figure the cold temps will be
kind enough to the o-rings to keep the brakes intact for a few more
weeks, at least. I'll have them swapped out in time for Sun N Fun
though, for sure.

My experience with the iEFIS has convinced me that the way to go is an
iPad running your choice of aviation software. At least if it goes
down, you can get another iPad for reasonable money, and have it
overnight if you need it! And if you don't like one app, just buy a
different one next year. I've been expecting somebody to come up with a
bluetooth engine interface for the iPad, and there's at least one at
http://sportair.aero/news/wireless-in-flight-engine-data-now-available-for-icub/

, probably more if I spend a few minutes looking, and certainly more in
the future.

I was skeptical of the brightness of the iPad, but now that I've
inherited my daughter's (she's happy with her laptop at college), it's
plenty bright enough for an open cockpit KR, and fits just about
perfectly in the panel height available. Even two iPads on the panel,
one for navigation and one for engine monitoring, would make a lot of
sense in my mind. You could use ForeFlight or the iFLY app for nav, and
an engine monitoring for the other, and if one went down you could do
both on one iPad. Poor man's glass panel, in my mind, and would be what
I'd do if I could do it all over again. Maybe I'll have that chance
with my next one. The iPad is ubiquitous, and stuff like ADS-B is "plug
and play" with it. No longer do you have to wait for a particular
software vendor to add compatibility...just about everybody wants to be
compatible with the iPad first.

And I also have to confess that there's nothing wrong with steam gauges
for basic flight instruments. At least they only fail one at a time,
and I do think they are easier to read and digest the info quickly.
That'll open a large can of worms, I'm sure.

I did install cabin heat in N891JF this week, and it's a wonderful thing...

KR> "First" Flight Report

2014-11-09 Thread John Bouyea
Hi Tony.

Congrats on getting your KR into the air.

Thank you, I?m still quite excited about it! And sorry for the delay in
answering your query. I?ve been having too much fun flying since I got off the
ground. C177A, KR2, RV8A, and a RV9A all in the last 48 hours. YeeHaww Larry!

I'm interested that you're operating from a 2,000 ft grass strip.
Let me clarify that point.

Our strip OR81 (http://airnav.com/airport/OR81) hosts about 15 airplanes
ranging from RV?s (4, 6, 8 & 12) using about 1/3 of it to a Beech 36 who uses
about ? of it. Most of the pilots here have flown from here many years and it?s
what we just know and use. I actually land my Cardinal in less than factory
book numbers when I?m really on top of it. I can get down and stopped in under
600?. There?s not a lot of room for variance in speeds. There is something
about only having so much available and just making it work. It?s a whole
separate topic but ?Slow Flight? and being comfortable operating close to MCA
has a big impact on being successful. In the Cardinal, I have more fun going
slow than trying to go fast.

Did you have any concerns about your KR operating from your strip? Is it the
takeoff or the landing that uses the most real estate?

Yes. I?m afraid it?s going to be the landing part that is the issue here. My
first takeoff I was off the ground in about 800? no problem. That doesn?t leave
much/ any room for putting it back down if there is a problem but that?s a
given here. Friday, I launched from here and flew to MMV
(http://airnav.com/airport/MMV) for my first landings. Having a mile of runway
in front of me made that almost a non-event. My first landing at MMV I floated
above the runway almost 1500? according to Jerry VanGrunsven. That simply isn?t
going to work at home. My plan is to learn/ teach myself how to slow fly this
thing. I don?t know who said it but Dan Pritchard reminded me he read that 5
knots extra on landing could equate to 500? more landing distance. So to answer
your question, landing takes more than takeoff.

What are the characteristics of your KR (engine, weight, flaps, etc.) that
might affect takeoff and landing performance?
I?m learning to fly a KR2 ?kinda S? as it has an extra bay in the back but no
2? extension in front of the mail spar.
Revmaster 2100, Great Plains 4-into-1 exhaust header (and I DO think it makes a
difference)
About 630# and I want to reweigh it after the trim incident (separate message
coming on that)
Belly brake ala Heath/ Jones/ Langford variety (long overdue updates coming to
my KR web page soon)

Great big 5.00x5 main tires running at 20psi and Deihl nose gear without any
fairing yet

Once again, congratulations.

Thanks again!

2014-11-08 Thread Tony King
Hi John,

Congrats on getting your KR into the air. I'm interested that you're
operating from a 2,000 ft grass strip. From other discussions on the forum
I've developed the impression that 2,000 ft would be a minimal strip for a
KR. The reason I'm interested is that my own strip is about 650 metres
(close enough to 2,000 ft) and I've been wondering if I'll be able to
operate my KR from there.

Did you have any concerns about your KR operating from your strip? Is it
the takeoff or the landing that uses the most real estate? What are the
characteristics of your KR (engine, weight, flaps, etc.) that might affect
takeoff and landing performance?

Once again, congratulations.

Cheers,

Tony

I don't think the trim tab is ever above the elevator only below it.

Bou;

I will add my congratulations to those that the others have offered, and of
course we're all happy that the flight brought you back to earth safe and
sound. You'll soon get to the bottom of the stick force issue, I'm sure.

What I am *not* sure of is why I might merit special mention when you were
thanking people for their help? As I recall, the only thing I did was drive
out to Paul Martin's shop with you one day to look at his KR2 when he was
converting it from its original KR retracts and tailwheel to trigear. The only
reference I have to that is a little webpage that I put up describing my first
flight in a KR (Paul's), here: http://www.flysquirrel.net/ride.html . That
page is dated December 1999, fifteen years ago, so anything I did to help keep
you motivated back then has long since burned out ;o)

Again, congrats!

KR 19-8322 here in Aus. finally flew her first flight today, (and I am still
buzzing) only for one circuit tho as there was a high EGT alarm but bar graphs
were in the green, so it was landed on caution , Test pilot said it flew well
just slightly nose heavy, just a few minor things to fix up now then on with
the
rest of the test fight hours.here a video of the first

Thanks guy's for the reply, I had not even considered the thought of flying
several different aircraft before mine but it is a good logical idea and i know
were it is coming from as I have driven a lot of different machines over the
years, from small underground loco's to giant mine face shovels and you need to
approach each one differently and feel what the machine is telling you before
you act. but for this purpose I am only limited to a small few planes. And by
the way if any one is on the hunt for tail wheel came across this, a Tail Wheel
Assembly and hardware. from fisher flying products, looks like a neat unit.
--always great to find something after you have already made it!!--And thanks
Mark for the offer for my link but my my web site is already there in the
builders list. unless you had something else in mind, in any case it's OK, its
out there for anyone to look at.

Gentleman I am assuming we can have different points of view for the
purpose of education and not offend anyone. The gentleman I spoke of a
Sonerai flying just like a cub I believe could be a dangerous statement for
some. I have flown many different types of taildraggers including
champions, chiefs and cups along with a Cessna 140.
All of those it is true do have similar flight characteristics though
they are unique to their own. A higher performance amateur built aircraft
does not fly orl land the same. Build a mansion aircraft does not have any
dangers flight characteristics it is still a sensitive airplane. Mine had a
climb rate of 1500 feet per minute and a roll rate of 180 degrees per
second. Please do not take this wrong! I just believe that it could hurt
someone that is a little bit ignorant that they can fly something that is
fairly tame and jump into a higher performance sport aircraft and not have
to the very careful! This is a great website and though none of the
airplanes if flown within their respected flight parameters are inherently
dangerous we must be careful how we use our experience to convey knowledge
to others. My Sonerai was a very nice handling airplane and I do miss it
but none of these aircraft are tame is the previously mentioned Pipers,
Aeronca's or Cessnas. Again I hope no one takes offense to this but I do
feel that it is important that we do not compare our homebuilts to factory
builts when it comes to performance.

I had a Sonerai for a little while. When I bought it the previous owner
told me that if flies just like a Cub. I though no possible way, but
sure enough it flew just like a Cub. A KR is nothing like a Cub. Time
in a Sonerai, or anything different than you normally fly for that
matter, will help you, but it will still not be like a KR.

This has been some good conversing. The advise on going over the aircraft
for a few weeks instead of jumping into a first flight vindicates my
thinking. I put the cart before the horse in buying N186RC in thinking
because of my Sonerai time I could just go. High speed taxi and ground
effect flight humbled me a bit though it settled down nicely. I also
realized because someone else built it that the interior needs to be
adjusted for me. The airplane survived my hanger doors being blown off by
severe winds last night with nary a scratch! I figure this little bird.
snd I have alot of flying together as LONG AS I GO ABOUT IT NO DIFFERENTLY

That's an awesome plane, Robert! I particularly like the "other woman"

I think you'll be fine with the modifications you've made to the tail and

Which Sonerai would you be able to fly? I suspect that a low wing version is
quite similar to a KR2s. However, my only point if comparison is the
differences between my somewhat tricky Sonerai I and a Corvair powered KR2S.
Between those two, the KR is the easier plane to fly and land.

If you can get Sonerai time, do so. I any time in a highly maneuverable
aircraft is going to help.

Few people on this list can speak specifically to the comparisons you
mention, but Jeff Lange will probably chime in, since he has a lot of
Sonerai hours and recently started flying a KR2S. From what he told me, the
KR2S is more stable. If you're talking about a regular KR2, good luck
finding something comparable. Just remember to don't make any sudden
movements of the stick...it doesn't take much! If the plane is set up
properly though, it should fly itself once it reaches takeoff speed.

Obviously the usual "first flight rules" apply. What I would do is let the
plane fly when it wants to on takeoff, climb out slowly at first to get a
good feel for it, circle to a good 3000 AGL or so above the airport, reduce
throttle, and start feeling out the plane. There's a whole checklist of
things to do on a first flight, and if you need one of those"cards", there
are several for the KR. Most of these have their roots in Rick Junkin's
effort. He was (is?) a KR builder who was also an F-15 test pilot, and
wrote a "test card" that even the RV builders have copied. The link to it
is bad now, so I'll dig it up out of my hard drive and post it later today.
I think some other folks probably have a copy of it too.

More later...

I was asked several times about the g forces during my first flight in my
KR-2 on March 23, 2013. Contributing factors of pilot inexperience and a
control malfunction resulted in damage to the nose gear on landing. The
Dynon D10A recorded maximum of +1.7 g and minimum of +0.3 g. Exactly when
these peaks occurred is unknown. My guess: the peaks occurred during
take-off when I was struggling to regain control of the aircraft immediately
after the trim tab failure.
Aerobatic maneuvers under 50 feet AGL are definitely not recommended,
especially during first flight.

KR> First Flight Issues - Elevator Trim Tab

2013-03-27 Thread Sid Wood
On the first flight the elevator trim tab Nyrod sheath anchor point broke
loose and moved the trim tab to the full nose up position resulting in near
loss of control. Epoxy does not stick to well to plastic surfaces.
For the fix: I installed an aluminum angle to support an Adel cushion clamp.
The clamp captures a 1/4 inch fuel hose that was slipped over the Nyrod
sheath. Wrapped the Nyrod with vinyl tape for a snug fit in the hose. The
clamp keeps the cable from wiggling around and prevents the sheath from
moving without pinching the inner cable. Operation of the trim tab is now
smooth and positive.
Here is a picture from my website for the re-worked cable support:

KR> First Flight Issues - Elevator Trim

2013-03-26 Thread Sid Wood
On the first flight, 3/23/13, moments after lift off, the elevator trim
jumped to Full Nose Up. Trim control in the cockpit was non-responsive. I
had to hold firm forward pressure on the stick to maintain level flight with
the stick position about neutral. The bounced landing bent the nose strut.
Investigation after the flight revealed the epoxy seal on the sheath of the
Nyrod trim tab rod had broken. The Nyrod center rod and the sheath were not
damaged. The break is at the entrance to the horizontal stabilizer leading
edge inside the fuselage. This allowed the sheath to move resulting in the
trim tab moving to the Full Nose Up position. The fix is to secure the
Nyrod sheath. This is the same practical installation requirements for any
Bowden cable.

Sid,

Good job getting her back on the ground with only minimal stuff to rework.

I got rid of the nyrod type trim tab before I even started flying. Got rid of
the second option (RC model servo) as well. I have a fixed - but ground
adjustable trim tab. I use a bungee cord in the cockpit for some additional
adjustment - for like when I fly two passengers. Simple stuff but effective.

Don't even fly with wheel pants till everything is stable. You need to check
out the brakes and tires regularly for alignment issues.

Engine cooling - check your baffles for gaps and inlet issues.

Don't quit, you're too close - good luck.

Made the first flight with N6242 this morning. That's 26+ years of steady
building, modifying, sanding, painting, fixing and tweaking coming together
for 10 minutes of flight with 2 laps around the patch.
Winds were supposed to be calm as reported by AWOS; not true at any altitude
above 20 feet. My pitch trim was set for neutral, but soon as flying speed
was reached, got immediate pitch up, which of course, I immediately over
corrected. Nearly lost it, but managed to keep going while holding lots of
forward stick. Started to encounter more gusts a few hundred feet up with
more PIO. By 1500 feet was getting better control, but still gusty. Still
had full down trim and holding lots of forward stick. At 2000 feet oil temp
spiked at 240 degrees F and oil pressure was dropping off. Reduced throttle
to idle to glide to an airport landing. Was to high and fast over the
threshold. The low morning sun washed out everything on the Dynon during
final approach. I did not know if the engine had enough oil for a go
around, so pressed for a landing on the 4200' runway. Estimate the first
touch was about 80 knots half way down the runway with more PIO. The third
bounce bent the nose strut and trashed the wheel pant. Got to taxi speed
with about 100 feet of runway to spare. Taxi back to the hangar was
uneventful except for the fear induced adrenaline shakes.
Inspection at the hangar revealed the nose strut bent at the curve up from
the pivot. The wheel pant had asphalt scratches indicating a classic
wheelbarrow touchdown and had been destroyed. Engine oil was at the full
mark on the dip stick. Heat in the cabin during flight indicated inadequate
airflow through the oil cooler; excessive air duct length may be the
problem.
The elevator trim tab would not extend beyond the neutral point using the
cockpit control. The Nyrod shaft on the trim tab seems to be jammed to keep
the elevator in the full up position. My right triceps still aches from
holding forward stick so hard for so long. Troubleshooting is still ongoing
to fix the elevator trim. Will also need a new nose strut and maybe a new
oil cooler.
My intent with persisting with the climb was to get enough experience with
the controls to calm down the PIO for landing. Engine oil over heat
preempted that training.

I had the same issue you had with my trim tab. My trim tab motor was located
far from my trim tab and I used a Nyrod cable that bent and traveled all the
way up behind my seat. I found that there was to much play in it by having the
motor mounted so far from the trim tab and trying to keep the Nyrod cable
clamped in place without binding it. I spent a lot of time relocating the trim
motor in the back of the fuse and closer to the trim tab and horizontal
stabilizer. This helped but it did not completely eliminate the play in my trim
tab and its effectiveness.

I would suggest that if you trim tab motor is not located in your horizontal
stab that you relocate it there. I am going to relocate mine there. This should
eliminate all play or binding. There may be several members here that have
documented how to do this but I suggest you start out by looking at Dan Heaths
pages and pictures on how to do this. He has done a lot of research and had
both failures and success on how to do this and what to use and not use. I will
be using Dan's pictures and procedures on how to redo mine.

On the oil cooling. I am not sure if you are running a VW or a Corvair. I would
assume that if you are having oil cooling issues, that you are running a VW. My
advice. Dont do what I did. I bought a big oil cooler and then bought all the
Earls fittings and such and by the time I got done with it. I would have been
far ahead to just have bought the Revmaster large oil cooler kit. I am saying
that from a cost to build standpoint. I think my 60 dollar oil cooler cost me
over 300 bucks by the time I got it done. I think the Revmaster is less than
200 but I have not looked it up lately.

As it relates to cooling and the high pressure and low pressure side of your
engine and cowling. I have done a lot of experimenting in this area. Not as
much as some but a bit. I was never really able to make much of a difference in
oil cooling by making changes to my cowling both upper and lower. Someone
correct me if I am wrong but I think if your inlets are farther away from your
prop hub or as far outside as you can get them, you are going to get better air
flow in. Look at Marl Langfords site for data on this I believe. I think Mark
L. has done a lot of study and research on high pressure side, lower pressure
side and the effects on cooling. I guess I should check some of my resources
before I make those claims.

I am also thinking of adding some baffle seals around my nose gear strut to be
sure that I am not allowing a significant volume of air to enter into the lower
cowling and cause an increase in pressure on the low pressure side or bottom of
the motor.

I"m sure glad you made it , Sid. On your trim tab, the obvious, if it
doesn't work on the ground it won't work in the air, it would seem to me. I
am working on my cooling and am hoping to use a fiberglass plenum on a VW
similar to Mark Langford on his Corvair. I hope to prove reasonable cooling
on the ground. 26 years sounds about right for me, I don't know if I will
have the guts to put it in the air when I get there.

Sounds uncannily like my first,Sid.
I my case my overheated Revmaster quit on base and I had to dive to get
speed enough to get over trees on the threshold!
I put mine down to :
1- intakes too small.
2-outlet ditto.
3-use of aviation oil instead of recommended multigrade.
4.-Trim tab reduced in size by our masters which made it difficult to
achieve landing attitude.
I enlarged the intakes. Made an adjustable exit flap.Changed the oil to
Multigrade and fitted a "Gurney tab" to the elevator.
This worked for me -your results may differ!
Best regards,

I would also like to congratulate my KR companion and friend for one cool
test flight. I was the ground/safety crew & observer + picture taker.
After reviewing the video it did not appear to be as bad as Sid described.
If he had not said anything, to the casual observer it would have maybe
looked like a non-event first flight that was shortened due to mechanical
problems. But I am sure the cockpit view was a totally different
perspective. He has joined that elite crowd of Orville and Alan and Neil as
a fellow test pilot who took to the air and returned their aircraft safely
:)
Sid has been one of the most persistent builders I have known and all
of his years of engineering and construction work paid off - I hope to join
him some day in that elite group of first time test pilots. I also salute
all those KR pilots who have gone before him!

WOW !!!? Guess that's why they call you a test pilot.? Sure glad you got
through it without a scratch.? Good writeup, you had me on the edge of my seat
reading your account of events.? Goes to show that no matter how much we know
about our planes they can, and will, always teach us more.? I am interested in
hearing more about the oil cooler.? I have though many times about how I might
plumb my air flow and would like to capture the heat for the cockpit.? The more
I learn the more it looks like my idea is impractical.? Guess we'll call it

Sid,

Glad to hear you got to fly her. Twenty-six plus years... that's a LONG time
to wait for that moment. Sorry it wasn't perfect but it sounds like any
repairs can be done without sanding! Maybe someone has a nice used trike
gear they'd sell you cheap. I have a KR2 in my garage that will hopefully
fly someday. Keep us posted.

Thanks a bunch,

Netters,

I have a stock Tri-gear KR2 that is ready to be test flown.  I'm looking for
someone that is current in a stock KR that would be willing to make the
first flight for me.  And then check me out in it.  I have only had three
short rides in the right seat of a KR.

I have been assigned to do the first 40 hours at Rancho Murieta Airport
(N61).  If you are willing and able to help me, I will give you a round trip
airline ticket to Sacramento, CA airport. and cover your costs.  I don't
expect you to do this for me for free.
