[lace] The Lace Dress.
Sue, I wrote to Kirsten very early on, when I first heard about the Lace Dress, as I wanted to know if she would accept tatting, or not. (Yes, she will if it is $40 thread or finer!) It was quite a while before I got a reply, - so maybe wait a bit longer to hear from her. I hope it is going ahead â I have made 5 of the small pieces â 5cm sized bits are very small!! I think it is a wonderful idea, though,. That Embroidered Red Dress is magnificent, and if the Lace Dress is to be preserved in a museum, it will be there to âflauntâ lace to everyone who views it!!! (I just would not want to be the person who sews the lace onto the fabric!! ) Regards from Liz. L. Thank you for that advice about clicking on Photostream. IO, too, have had trouble finding photos when someone says they have put them up!! So good to know, now, how to find them! I have not been on Arachne for very many years, but I enjoy it, and have bought a couple of tops â t-shirts souvenirs when they were available, and am proud to wear them when out and about. [lace] Lace Quote
I believe Needlelace as we know it today came into being because, before hand, it was worked in the spaces where threads from the fabric were withdrawn. When the garment was worn out â the needlelace was also thrown away, as it was part of the garment. Eventually they invented a way of making the lace separately from the garment, so it could be removed and used again on a different garment. Punto in Aria, and the needlelaces we know today came into being, due to this. Sounds sensible I hope everyone is staying safe from this wretched virus, and that 2021 will be a better year than this one has been. We are slowly coming out of a 6 month long lock-down. [lace] Happy Christmas greetings
Just a line to wish everyone the Compliments of the Season. (depending on your beliefs, and being Politically Correct!) Happy Christmas to those who celebrate it. I Love that quote, Elena, âa ship is sooner rigged by far, than a gentlewoman made ready.â We are supposed to be in summer, here in Melbourne, Oz, but it is a chilly, grey, damp day today. We need the rain, so are not complaining, but I actually needed a windcheater top on when we went shopping this morning. I wore my Shuttlebirds one that I bought last year â navy blue, with white snowflakes printed all over the front!!! Well, one can Dream of white Christmases!! I am busy tatting, and have made a few Split ring snowflakes mounted in fine wire bangles, and they have been welcomed to hang on Xmas trees around here!! The Blue Ice thread from Handy Hands, size 340 seems to work up nicely and then the Snowflake size seems to fit the bangle. Karen Bovardâs patterns, of course. They work up so well. Regards from Liz. [lace] Group lace pieces
Your write up was very interesting (as usual!!) Alex. When the Springetts came out to Australia, in the 1980s, Christine showed us a slide show of some of her collection of old lace. I always remember a cap & lappets in Beds Lace, and she pointed out a flower motif on each lappet and the cap, and they were all slightly different.. She said that obviously the pieces had been worked by different people, and they all solved the problems with the flower in different ways. For some reason this always stuck in my mind. We were all fairly new to lacemaking, so all these glimpses of History were fascinating! (They Still are!!! :) ) Muscle memory is a fascinating subject, too. Now I do mostly Tatting, I find it Very useful!! (Wish the brain memory was as good!! â I keep forgetting my stitch count when interrupted or distracted!! ..Grrr!!) Stay safe and well, everyone. We are now coming out of Lock-down after 5 months, - and it seems to have worked as the State is currently Covid free!! Fingers crossed it stays that way!!) Regards from Liz. L. [lace] RE: lace-digest V2020 #58
After trying various ways of making a tally, I found that holding the 3 passives in my left hand, between various fingers, and weaving the 4th bobbin â tail first â though them was the easiest way for me. Now I am tatting , I tried Cluny Leaves â the Tatters version of Tallies, - and found that doing them in the hand was âcrampyâ, so I turned to using a roller pillow with berry pines to secure the threads. I can weave the thread much like a Bobbin lace tally, and then weave the shuttle backwards and forwards just like the 4th bobbin! So using a frame and making them that way is a progression from my Bobbin Lace Days!!! It is nice when techniques from one lace can convert to another type of lace!! And my hands donât get cramps! I still have the bad tremor â that will never go away, - but at least I can adapt thingsâ¦! I find with tatting there is a lot of Muscle Memory, and I can tat with minimal âlooking at itâ for much of the time. â But I have to stop and recount the stitches, now and again, or I get lost/forget what the count was!! There is always a draw-back of some sort â but usually it can be overcome. Just making lace â and chatting to lacemakers around the world, makes mistakes a very minor irritation We are , at last, just beginning to come out of Lock-down, after about 5 months or so. [lace] Ithaca Day
I would have loved to go to the Ithaca event. Was it a day event or a weekend? â the latter I seem to think. All the reports I heard about it made is out to be so much fun, and I am sorry our trips over to USA were never at the right time!!! Now we wonât be travelling any more (Far too old!) so I will just have to rely on reading about events on the Internet, - and going over some very happy memories!! How boring, and tedious life would be â especially just now with Covid Lock-downs â if we did not have the Internet to browse every day!! Though today, especially, it is Terribly slow! What ever do people do who do not do any handcrafts, too keep themselves occupied? - Yes I know â the Internet, - but that can get boring after a while!!! RE: [lace] Fixing lace to a background
Thank you for your replies to my question about glueing lace to a background. It is for a picture, made up of small, separate pieces, and eventually framed with glass in front. [lace] Fixing lace to a background
I have just be studying my copy of âTatting Artistry in Threadsâ by Helma Siemann, and see that she has glued her multitude of Josephine Knots etc, to Art board, to form the pictures (which are lovely) Is this an acceptable way of fixing tatting to a background â and would it be accepted by a Judge in a competition? I have only ever stitched lace to a fabric background, so am quite taken aback by this method, and am wondering if Show and Competition Judges would pass that method, - or would they disqualify the piece? Personally, I cannot see what is wrong with it, as the pieces will never be used, or removed from the setting, - so why not, -- but I wonder if it would be acceptable when up against other pieces for Judging. I would be interested in other peopleâs thought on it- especially if you are a Judge at Shows! Regards from Liz. L. [lace] the Magazine
Hooray, - some decent reading for later on!!! The IOLI Bulletin has just arrived, so mail is getting though, though slowly. With everything closed â including Libraries, - Lockdown has been rather boring!! Thank Goodness for our Lacemaking!!! At least we all would have had lots to do â and even, perhaps, finished a few UFOs. (shock! Horror! ð ) We lost our âState Branch of the Guildâ Librarian, early on in the Lock-down, and had to watch the funeral on the computer. It was SO sad to see her family â only 8 of them allowed, all sitting apart, due to regulations. They needed to be together and hugging and supporting each other. We will miss her a Lot. She will be a âhard at to followâ. She was always telling us to Finish what we were working on, so as a tribute to her, we decided we would each finish a UFO in her memory! I have found the discussion that Devon and others have been having on Lace IOLI Identification and History has been fascinating. Thank you for all the photos and information. [lace] Tatting article & Long tallies
Thank you for the link to the long article on the origins of Tatting. It was very interesting. I really enjoyed reading all the different theories! Thank you also to Devon for the close-up photos of some very interesting lace, and the discussion that goes with them. Yuk! I am glad I donât have to make such long tallies as were made in that lace!!! Working a braid would be much easier. I wonder why the lace was made that way! Must have been someone who was a glutton for punishment!!! :) This is what makes Arachne SO interesting. â We learn so many different things from some of you scholars, and it is all SO, SO interesting, and fills out gaps in our knowledge. The history of Lacemaking is so convoluted, but so interesting, and is such a big part of our general lives. I hope everyone is well, and safe from this terrible virus that is doing the rounds. During this summer over here in Australia I have been wearing my Arachne 2002 souvenir t-shirt with a hedgehog and spider on it. â and I can still fit in it too! ð The Arachne navy polo shirt I also have still fits, as well!! ð And now it is starting to go chilly in the evenings, as we head towards winter, I have been pulling on the Arachne socks I was gifted at last years Arachne lunch in Spokane. They are grey, with black spiders webs on them and gorgeous sparkly mauve little spiders on each web!!! I donât know who gifted them, but a Very Big Thank You. They are a good fit, and come up over my ankles perfectly. It is not cold enough to go into my winter, fluffy slippers, yet, but these socks are doing a good job!! ð I think about the fun of meeting many of you, every time I wear them. [lace] Bedford Hangings
Thank you for this very interesting article. I went to school next door to the Bedford Jail! I remember that they had a magnificent wisteria climbing over the inside wall, - which was beautiful when in full bloom, =- but was only seen by âOutsidersâ when the large front gates were opened to allow traffic in or out! When we were in the Upstairs Science room, we were about on a level with the top of the outer wall of the prison, and there were small windows, in cells, - one of which had a broken pane of glass, and every now and again â when the teacher was turned away and writing on the board, - a hand would come through the hole, and wave to us!! We often got into trouble by waving back!! Isnât it silly â the things you remember :) I did not know of the history of these hangings at the gaol, until much more recent times! To us kids, - it was the town gaol, and that was that!! We had a church on the other side of the school I have a Worsley hanging bobbin â well, I have passed it on to my Daughter, now, but it came to me though my Grandmother, and belonged to my Great Grandmother, - both Lacemakers (of course!) [lace] Concerns about us.
Thank you, everyone, for the concerns for us all over here in Australia. The bush fires have been, - and still are â horrendous. I live in an outer suburb of Melbourne, and we are quite safe, - but it is lucky we were not in Mallacoota where they had to evacuate everyone by Sea â the largest evacuation of people in Australian History, we are told!! It is where we have been holidaying for the last 45 years, - but 2 years ago we had to stop going there as it was too far, and we were not managing to tow the boat, and use it, as we are really too old for that now!! This last Christmas was just the 2nd year we have stayed at home, - so we were Very lucky. However it breaks our hearts to see the destruction there. It is such a pretty town and such friendly locals, who always had a smile and friendly greeting for us when we went back there. It was our âHome away from Homeâ! These terrible fires are still burning, some are still out of control, but we have not heard of any Lacemakers burned out. I know of 2 lacemakers on the South East coast, who have been evacuated twice, but are now both back in their homes â hopefully for good! A very big Thank You to New Zealand, Canada, and USA for sending some firefighters over to help out. They are doing a great job. All the Fireies, from everywhere, are so brave, and have been working literally day and night to try to gain some control. They are all SO brave, and they are all Heros in everyoneâs eyes. RE: [lace-chat] Posts and summer
The Tatters Guild here in Melbourne (Australia) has to bring a box of books for us to browse through, each meeting, as we have no library cupboard at the Hall where we meet. For any special book, we can email the librarian and ask for it to be brought to the next meeting (which is every 2 months) There is a list of all available books at the entry desk, if you want to see what is available. It seems to work OK. I have asked after a type of tatting book, and a couple were brought for me to borrow if they were what I wanted, and another time I asked if they had a certain book, and yes, it was there, waiting for me at the next meeting. So I live in hope of getting the magazine soon! â and I suppose the UK Lace, and Oz Lace will be due, too. The Bulletin looks to have some Very interesting articles in it â as usual. [lace] This & that.
I just got my digest, with lots of news in it! Firstly,. Sorry to hear of your loss, Daphne. Congratulations, Susan, for winning the Advent Calendar Challenge. I certainly recognised the first photo â the Bedford Bridge!! I went to school in Bedford, and eventually lived and worked there, before I relocated to Australia!! Also, thanks for the link to that Excellent article. Alex, that sounds like a very interesting book you are starting to write. Although I find Honiton Lace too fine for me to make (I have had a few goes at it!) I do love looking at it, and have a friend over here who makes the most marvellous Honiton Lace. What a marvellous web site you have just made, Brian. Very many thanks. I have just had a very quick browse, and will spend a lot of time, another day, working my way though it all. Best wishes for the /surgery, and I hope it is very successful, and that you make a quick recovery. Goodness!! The knowledge you have accumulated about Lacemaking â and you are not even trying to make it!! ð I loved the story in The romance of thee Lace pillow, about the little boy at the Elstow school who got so fed up with his lacemaking that he took his pillow out of school and dropped it down the Well.!!! ð Fantastic, - so thank you Very, Very much. Alex â what is your new book about? Carolina, thank you for that lovely animated card on your web site. Happy New Year to eve4ryone. I hope 2019 is a good year for you. Regards from Liz. [lace] Armenian Lace
Seasons Greetings to everyone, and I hope the Festive Season and in to 2019 is a good one for you. (How can it be almost 2019 already? I know we had a couple of weeks of October, - but whatever happened to November? Did we get one this year? I think I missed it!!! ð ) I get the Digest form of this list, so am a bit late with answering! Elena asked about Armenian Lace. Elena Dickson has written a couple of books on âEastern Mediterranean Knotted Laceâ â and they are excellent â I learned from them! They are in English, with very clear diagrams. I can recommend the books â one is well out of print, I think, but she produced another one with much the same beginners instructions in it, but with some different patterns to make! That should be still available â âMediterranean Knotted Lace,â by Elena Dickson (Milner Craft Series) Published 2005 â so it should still be available . Mine has a soft cover. If you are looking for her first book (hard cover) it is called âKnotted Lce in the Eastern Mediterranian Traditionâ published in 1992 â also by the Milner Craft publishers. You might be lucky and can find a 2nd hand copy â like I have! Her 3rd book is more advances â Bebilla flowers. It is a nice lace to make â once you get the basic idea, can make the knot, and get it Tight! (My problem, - so Elena told me when I managed to get a class with her â I was not tightening my knots enough!) [lace] Lace Museum & Lacis
While at Sacramento for the IOLI convention a few years ago, the Wednesday bus tour was to the Lace Museum in the morning, and Lacis in the afternoon â an absolute Feast!!!It was just the Best Day Out!! Try to do both if you can. We were fed our sandwich lunch on the bus as it travelled from the Lace Museum in the south to Lacis in the north â so it did not take too long for that part of the journey. I would not want to pick one above the other â they were both Gems. The Museum had a display, and lots of drawers in cabinets to investigate, and a shop for some goodies, - and not enough time to spend drooling over some superb lace!! Lacis â well, that was like an Aladdinâs Cave! Book, supplies for every type of lace, there were items hanging from the ceiling, - you name it â it was there! Then we discovered a staircase at the side (outside) which took us up to a display room which was being set up for a display of lacer items â I cannot remember details, -- but Lots of eye-candy there!!! [lace] Professional or not.
Firstly, before I ask my curly question â I am SO pleased to hear your wonderful âLace, not Laceâ is going so well, Devon. You have put so much into it, and I am thrilled for you that it is such a success. Now â the IOLI competition has classes for 2 groups of people â Teachers, and Non- Teachers. I have been a Teacher in Bobbin Lace and Needlelace â only. I am a Learner in Tatting and have never taught that craft. So â do I enter a piece in the Non Teacher class, - or would Tatting be classed as âLaceâ and I am therefore put in the Teacher class? I have written to the competition convenor, but not had a reply yet. I asked a few people at our Lace Day yesterday, in Melbourne , just for curiosity, but no-one had a clear answer. Most thought I would be classed as a Non- teacher, though. My thought , at the moment, is to do an âOwn Designâ, and then they can put it in either section, as the Teacher class must be an Own Design, and the Non- teachers have 2 classes to chose from â Own design, or someone elseâs design!! But it is an interesting question â if you teach one type of lace . â does that class you as a Teacher for all Laces? Regards from Liz. [lace] Lace Magazines. etc.
Sorry to hear of Marionâs passing. Oh Dear! another lacemaker up on that cloud now. It is getting to be too full up there, so I hope everyone will stay down here for a lot longer! I have received 2 Lace Magazines in the last 2 days â Wonderful!! The first to arrive, yesterday, was the IOLI Bulletin, and today the Postie brought me the UK Lace magazine. â so I have some good reading to do tonight!! I must put my creative juices to work, and see if I can come up with an entry for next yearâs IOLI convention. We are hoping to be able to go, - and are tentatively planning the trip. Yes, I know.. [lace] Lace Conventions
Well said, Catherine. It is lovely, for us who could not be there â to read all about the Belgium Lace Convention/Congress (is there a difference between to 2?) Many of us would have Loved to have been there, and reading about it in detail is the next best thing! Thanks, Anna â and if you have too much rain in Sydney â just send some down to Melbourne!! I have just started a tatted piece using the new Lizbeth Metallic thread. Although it is a bit harder to work with, and needs more careful tensioning, it is really sparkly and the finished piece will look very nice, I think. It is ideal for Xmas decorations!! I am a lot slower when using it, due to having to pay more careful attention to the tensioning of each stitch, but I think the finished product will be worth it! (I hope so, anyway!!) [lace] Plaited ribbon edge.
Many thanks to Lin who has put the 2 photos on Flikr for me, and sent me some instructions which I have printed off. And also a big Thank You to Sue for sending me more detailed instructions to get into Flikr. They are printed off, and saved as well, - so I should be able to find any use them in the future!!! I think a glitch in the system a while ago somehow made Yahoo think I had disappeared off its list!! One photo is a scrappy diagrammed instruction, - and I see that in that one I show passing the 2 ribbon lengths Left over right, and in the photo picture it show going right over left! Well, it does not matter which way you start, as you use first one, and then the other piece, anyway!!! Just so long as you alternate them, and tension them as you go, passing them from the back to the front though the loop, you should get a decent result. I stitched the finished plait onto the card, with the stitches hidden in the plait, so they are not seen. Easy!!! :) Regards from Liz.in Melbourne, Oz. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Aurofil, needlelace etc.
Thank you all for the kind comment about my Gros Pr. Needlelace piece. Gros Point is my favourite lace to make!! Doing the raised cordonets and embellishments if great fun â providing I have planned them carefully beforehand. I tend to get carried away, and over do it a bit sometimes!! Apologies for not answering sooner, but I was out all day yesterday demonstrating at a Pioneer Cottage Open Day. I was the âTatting Ladyâ this year!! There were 2 bobbin lacemakers along side me, and we created quite a bit of interest â as usual! As to the remark I made about Aurifil thread. â Jeri, I only used the #50 for that needlelace. My comment about the #28 thread was in regards to some bobbin lace I made with it. Re the plaited ribbon âframeâ â It takes a long length of ribbon â I think it was 9 times the finished length (but I wonât sweat to that!) â fold the length of narrow ribbon in half, - so you start in the centre of the length, and fold it Right over left, leaving a small loop. Take the left thread (was originally on the right) and take it to the back and pass a loop through the first loop, and ease to tighten that first loop. Now take the right hand ribbon (was originally on the left), and pass it around the back and through the 2nd loop (made with the left ribbon tail), tighten the loop, -- and carry on alternating the ribbon tails, and tightening up each one as you go. It is hard to describe, - and you canât see my hands waving around! :) I will try to put a photo on my Flikr page. (If I can remember how to do it!!) It does look nice around a piece of lace, and is easy to do, once you get started. I use a narrow ribbon, about a quarter inch, or half centimetre wide, I think. It sounds like that was a wonderful trip for the World Congress. [lace] Aurofil threads, storm, etc.
Firstly â I do hope everyone is safe and well protected from that terrible storm that is just about arriving on the East Coast of USA. We have seen TV pictures of it, and had the predictions, so we have you all in our thoughts & prayers. I hope it is not going to interrupt your Exhibition, Devon. Good luck with the event â I am sure it will be a huge success. The Australian Lace Magazine is now out and about, and the back cover features a Big enlargement of a piece of Gros Point type lace I made using Aurofil #50. It has also come up Very white (not how it really looks!) Not too sure about seeing it That large â all the âindiscretionsâ show up I found the thread quite nice to work with â though I found the #28 (?) not so nice, as I thought the twist was much looser. [lace] Threads
I used a polycotton for the Dress Cap I made (in navy, as I am white-haired now, and white lace would not show up !! ) I did not enjoy using the thread, as it did not want to stay in the hitch around the bobbin!, but otherwise the finished product turned out very well . the best part is that it never creases, so I can just pull it out of the case I keep it in, (with other doilies, neck tie etc) and wear it. A cotton lace piece would need ironing, but not the Polycotton piece! I have used 50 Aurofil for Needlelace (and won a prize for it!) and it was really nice to use. I did a small piece of Gros Point type, and the sheen just enhances the work. I found the 28 weight Aurofil rather loosely spun, and only tried it for bobbin Lace. I did not like it a lot. [lace] Cilaos needle lace
This interesting lace seems to be a variety after reticella. If you have Margaret Stephensâ book on Embroidered Lace â the basic structure is very similar, - except she withdraws all the threads in the square, not cut to the corners and fold the triangles back. The stitches used are different, and the outcome looks different, but the basic idea is very much the same â well to my eyes, anyway! You can also see a relationship[p to Sols/Teneriffe Lace, too. [lace] Typing and Magazines
I have the Digest form of Arachne, and I see Devonâs message there twice â but Interestingly, the first one has the 2 paragraphs together, and the 2nd one has a double lin space between the 2 paragraphs!! Work that out! :) Many of the emails â especially Jeriâs have odd hieroglyphics when apostrophise etc. are used. I received my UK Lace Magazine this morning. Great!! Now I have some more good reading for this evening!! On the first page is a photo of an Early Lace in gold & silver, with spangles. Well, I have that pattern on my pillow at the moment, but mine looks very much the Poor relation, as I am working it in white cotton thread, , as I plan to make just enough to fold over, gather at the fold, and use as a Jabot on a blouse!! I have stitched an Early Lace â a pointy edge from the Rosemary Shepherd Early Lace book around the edge of the collar, - as that piece Must have been the edge for a Ruff!! Last time I wore the blouse â to a Lace Day, I used a set of 3 very small knotted lace-edged doilies, folded and pinned on to form a jabot. [lace] Colour in Lace.
Wow! Alex, that hits it right on the head!! Texture or colour? One does seem to override the other. Yes, I agree. I do a lot more monochrome lace, and I know just what you mean about the texture showing up when it is not distracted by colour. Catherine, I worked your Strawberries â and learned Such a Lot while working the pieces â flowers wired, leaves with wired veins, and a double layer of stitching to make the strawberries. It was such fun to do, - and a belated big Thank You for the pattern â and in fact, the whole book!! However when I put that piece in my Proficiency exam, it was written, by the examiners, as Stumpwork. I am not sure whether they accepted and passed it, or not!! Stumpwork is surely partly Needlelace, anyway â isnât it?!! Well, that whole piece is Needle Lace to me, anyway!! (But then, - I was always a bit of a rebel!! â and I refuse to be Politically correct!) Devon â Yes, I too get odd dots, Capital letters, and other marks put in to some Arachne letters â Jeriâs and my own among others. I have no idea why, and no way of altering it. [lace] Lace Revival of the 1970's
Yes Shirley T. and David, I remember the shop called The Lacemaker very well!! Goodness! It was about the only place you could get lacemaking supplies. It was very sad when it closed. Before that, though, I used to buy cones of linen thread at a little shop in the city where they kept it on a top shelf â and a very old man used to climb up a ladder to get it, - and we were always so afraid he would fall! I still have a couple of cones of it left â but in the finer threads â 100 and 120 I think. Hmm! I Must get it out and use it up!!! I believe it is Brockens thread. Then I discovered that Lace could be made with a cotton thread â and The Lacemaker opened, - and as that was Much nearer to my home, I always shopped there till it closed. [lace] Lace Revival
My earliest books were the 1970s version of the Margaret Maidment book, Louisa Tebbs book (by the same publisher), and the little Amy Dawson book. Then we got the Pam Notting hamâs mixed laces book, and Pam Robinsons book, and so on. I found some classes here in an outer suburb of Melbourne in 1977, just after a trip back to England where I bought the Miss Channers book, and a few plastic bobbins, as I had decided to learn lacemaking while on the trip. I had done one small 9 pin edge with my Grandmother when I was about 19 but had not followed it up. Suddenly I decided to have another go , and with my early teenaged daughter who was also interested we got started â I went to class, then came home and taught her!! (well, she had to go to school every day so could not come to Lacemaking with me!) â and we are both still making lace!!! Kant Magazines were available â but not in English. [lace] Yarn help, please.
I have just been going though some old Anna Magazines â what Wonderful magazines they were!! â and one garment I want to make â a tatted Vest! â needs:- âMedium Fine wool Schoeller âSouvenirâ â(50g/195m/213yds.) Would this be, - a 3ply or 4 ply wool? I wonder if some of you Continental ladies might know what thickness this yarn might be. Medium Fine does not mean a lot ..! [lace] Eye of needles
On a TV programme travelling around Britain by train, Michael Portillo visited a factory where needles are made, and we saw the machines punching out the eyes of the needles. I only found out a few years ago that there is a good side and a bad side when threading needles!! Now I have seen the needle factory working, I can understand it all a bit better! (So watching TV can be Constructive, and not always Destructive ) Regards from Liz.in Melbourne, Oz. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Jeri's emails
To those missing out on Jeri's emails - perhaps think about switching to the Digest form of Arachne. Jeri's emails are always there. Thank you Jeri, for all your wonderful information that you give us on such a variety of Lace subjects. You are a "fount of knowledge" and it is always a delight to read your emails with all their knowledge and help in them. I had a great day yesterday. We are away on holiday, - to our usual spot, - and we took a long drive to the next town - over the State border, - and met up with some other Lacemakers for lunch! Lots of laughter, lots of lace talk, and also some 'looking at lace' that they were making or had made! Lacemakers are such a lovely group of supportive people, - various age groups, and lifestyles, but brought together by our wonderful craft. I am very distressed by the recent bickering and nasty comments here on Arachne. Please, everyone,. - lets get back to Lacemaking, and Friendship, and leave the nastiness well out of the way. This is not the right place for spiteful comments. Liz in Mallacoota lizl...@bigpond.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Lace Tells, etc.
Many of the Bucks Point prickings have only about an inch of dots for the ground pins. It took a long time for me to find out that this was because after the last row of ground pins the lacemakers would be able to work the ground without any pins, so the work would be a lot faster. I wonder if the tells were spoken quicker, or were there different tells for working faster ground? !! These are the sorts of mysteries that will never be answered, but are fascinating to ponder on! (OK, we are in the midst of a sudden heatwave, - so maybe I have had too much sun!! :) ) If only I could remember more of Grandmaâs stories about those days!! I always enjoyed listening to them,. But never listened hard enough to remember them!! Thank goodness for people like Thomas Wright!! Regards from Liz. [lace] Xmas Card Exchange
I have just received 2 lovely cards with gifts inside. Very many thanks to Agnes B. For the card with bookmark and the pricking, too. It is a wide piece of torchon type lace, beautifully worked, and will be treasured. Thank you, Agnes. I also received my 2nd exchange card â from Lin H,. The card is decorated with a hand-crafted candle, and holly, and inside there was a lace tool â a fine pin lifter/pusher- of a sort I have not seen before. Very many thanks, Lin, - and I can assure you the tool will be working hard very soon!!! May I ask what thread you used for the candle, please? It is so pretty, and has a lovely feel to it!! [lace] Lace tells & History
Thank you all for your contributions which has made such interesting reading. The History of Lace and these tells is fascinating.. The men learned lacemaking as children, and as agricultural workers they were dependant on the weather, - so during times of bad weather, they were able to earn a few pennies by making lace, until they were able to return to the land. There is a delightful story of a Lace School in Elstow (I think) where a boy got so mad at his lace, that he grabbed his pillow ran outside, and dropped the pillow etc down the well!! My family came from around the Bedford area â not far from Olney! â and I have recently found out that they were Straw Plaiters, too. This, I am told , was common amongst Lace makers, as the same Cross & Twist is used to plait the straw, and was very Portable, so they could plait some straw while walking to market, and then sell it to the Luton Hat makers â Luton being also not far away, and the centre for straw hats, boaters, etc. This is a whole different story, though! But interesting how one leads to the other!! Regards from Liz. [lace] IOLI Bulletin.
Hooray!! My magazine arrived this morning. I have not had a chance to open it yet, - but I know I will have some good reading this evening, when I get time to sit and look though it!! I must learn to concentrate better â I mad a bad boo-boo with my tatting last evening, - and used the wrong colour in some Daisy Picots, and had gone on quite a way past them before I realized! Going backwards is not that easy â especially with a finer thread (#40) Grr!!! The Josephine Knot took me ages to get undone, - but I managed it, eventually! [lace] CA. fires.
Those California fires are Terrible. Will they never end? Nice story last night on TV of a couple going back to their burned out home â with nothing left but their Dog was still alive and at the ashes of the house. Amazing. We had a âBlack Saturdayâ of terrible fires a few years ago when we lost 78 lives not far out of Melbourne, so we understand ..! A small holiday town was burned out last summer along the surf coast to the south west of Melbourne, so we struggle with fires every year. Gosh! You people over in USA cannot win a trick right now â with cyclones, and now fires. I hope all lacemakers and their families are safe and well. Know we are thinking of you all. I am now back home, after a great week at the Australian AGM week held this year (and the next 2 years) in Launceston, Tasmania. Organization was Excellent as was the Hotel, and the way they looked after us all. A very pretty old-world town , plenty of shops within walking distance, Excellent company, and lots of Fun!!! Too much good food â as usual at Lace happenings! â and lots of happy memories. Regards from Liz. [lace] IOLI Magazines
Hooray, - and Wow! The postie delivered the IOLI Bulletins this morning â Yes, Plural â there were 2 of them!! Spring and Summer editions, - so I have Lots of interesting reading for tonight! I have had a very quick flip though â and see there are Tatting patterns by the Shuttle Brothers. Great! I love their patterns as they flow on through the whole piece â very few, if any stops and starts till the end! Like the round mat in the previous Bulletin, I think only the last round was âseparateâ â all the others were worked continuously. So now my âTo Doâ list has grown somewhat Well, I am off to Launceston, Tasmania, on Saturday for a week of Lacemaking at the Australian Lace Guildâs Annual Convention, (where I am teaching needlelace) so I may get some tatting going while on the plane! Yesterday I was demonstrating bobbin lace at a local Pioneer Cottage. I was working on an Early Lace, - and had another early lace piece aro8und the collar of my blouse â a pattern out of the Rosemary shepherd book â that was probably (to my eyes, anyway) an edge for an Elizabethan ruff. â so I had to put it around a collar â didnât I?!! The weather was kind, and Lots of families came out to visit, so it was very busy â but fun. I have been demonstrating lacemaking there at their Open Days for about 25 years I think! [lace] Condolences
So sorry to hear of your loss, Sue T. , - just remember all the Happy memories of your Mother. How nice that you have been given back the lace you made for her, and that she obviously treasured. Now you can keep it safe. Too. Those wedding garters are appreciated by the various brides, I am sure, - and good that you have got them back for future use. Making lace is wonderful âtherapyâ and it is nice when others appreciate our efforts. I must go and sort out some lace to wear on Sunday, when I am demonstrating Lacemaking at a Pioneer Cottage near here, at their Annual Open Day! I must look out for the new IOLI Bulletin which is now out and about. I hope all the lacemakers and their families in the Caribbean and Florida re safe and well, and in Mexico, too I have heard from Jo Anne and all is well with her. It was so nice to meet up with her in Philadelphia a few weeks ago, - when the weather was fine and very hot! The TV footage of âIrmaâ is terrifying. With cyclones in the East, and centre, and earthquakes in the west, North America is taking a hammering at the moment. Best wishes to everyone in these disaster areas â we here in Australia know all about Extreme Weather happenings, so can sympathise â though I live in a âsafeâ area where a bit of hail is about the worst we get- occasionally!!! Very sad to hear of the passing of Santina Levi. Condolences to her family and friends. Her History of Lace is a magnificent book, and I believe she had a hand in the Le Pompe book, and the âHowe toâ part at the back! The Happy news is the challenge for both wire and fibre lace that Lenka has put up on her website. What a great idea. RE: [lace] Gil Dye new book - Bone Lace
Very many thanks, Jeri. I have found the New England site, - and your book reviews, and bookmarked it!! I have been in touch with Gil, and have ordered her new book. We missed you at the IOLI convention. It was, as usual, very nice, the Hotel was good, and lots of fun was had by all! It was a Very long way away, though, for us to travel â I estimated we had a 35 hour Day the day we flew directly from Melbourne to LA, then after about a 4 hour stop-over, we flew on to Philadelphia. Yuk! Time zones, and the International Date line throws ones body-clock out of whack!! Still â we survived, and getting there a couple of days early to get over Jet-Lag worked, and we had a good time. Coming home we just flew to Seattle, and stayed with daughter, Helen, and family for a few days before coming home, so that part of the trip was not quite as taxing!! It was nice to be warm (hot!! Philly was around the 98 ° each day) for a while, as we have had a very cold winter this year, - and we are still in it!! Regards from Liz. [lace] Early Laces
I have just started an Early Lace from Rosemary Shepherdâs book. It is an edge- but I have repeated it, (footside to footside) to make a double si9ded piece. It seems to be working OK!! Gil Dye has another book out now, I think - #5 in the series? Where can one get it? â Can one get it directly from her? I seem to have lost the URL to her web site â and Mr Google canât seem to find it!! Grrr! Yes I know there is a great write-up by Jeri and it will be in the Archives, but I donât seem to be able to fine the Archives at the moment. More Grrr!! I love the Early Laces, and now, with this bad eye that surgery made worse I feel the early laces may be all I can make these days â putting up a pin Where Necessary, rather than in properly defined pinholes!! I rather like a pattern I have with âfeathersâ but that takes specific pins in holes, so I have left that till I get more used to not having good 3D perspective! I have happy memories of the class I took with Gil a couple of years ago, and hope to add to my collection of her books. They are gems â not just for the lace patterns, but for the History she writes, too. The History of Lace is a fascinating subject, and to be able to make the lace from those times is Great. I recently did a class with rosemary Peel on the Early Tatting â but I am glad we tat in todayâs way, though, not how they did it long ago Regards from Liz. in Melbourne Oz. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Convention posting.
Arlene, Many thanks for that posting about the Convention Venue. I get the digest, so I only got it just now. It was Most informative, and will be very useful. Unless the next Digest comes though quickly, I will have left here before it arrives. We are arriving on Wednesday evening, and wondering about whether the Shuttle bus or a taxi would be best. We will be SO tired after the 15 hour flight to LA, and, after about 4 hours there, we get another 5 hours flight to Philadelphia. We will leave home by 5AM on Wednesday to get to the Airport in time for Checking in etc for our early morning flight. It is the International Date Line , and Numerous time zone changes that confuse our bodies!! [lace] re Question
Being English/Aussie, I use the word Plait (or occasionally Leg â just to confuse things further!!) for the 2 pair ct,ct,ct section, And Braid, - to me â is a wider piece with more passive pairs, and one pair of workers going backwards and forwards -, as in Tape lace. Lacemaking, having sprung up in so many different places, and people not travelling around like we do today, has brought about lots of confusing bits like this. It all adds to the fascination of Lacemaking, I suppose!! Look at â Workers, walkers weavers, leaders and runners! â 5 terms for the same thing! [lace] RE: Wearng Lace, a Memory of Gabrielle Pond
Some of you may remember the late Gabrielle Pond, who had vast Lace knowledge, and a wonderful collection of lace. I usually wear lace at Lace Days â but one time I did not â and, as usual, I went to say Hello to Gabrielle Pond, who lived in Melbourne and always came to our Lace Days. I always spoke to her. She was a lovely lady, so generous with her knowledge, and it was always nice to chat with her. Anyway, this one time she looked me up and down, in the way only âUpper class Englishâ can do. She said, âI did not recognise you. You are not wearing any lace!â Well, that was a Big reprimand! Next Lace Day, I draped myself in heaps of lace, went to speak to her, and again I got the up and down look, then a glimmer of a smile, and âI recognise you today, Liz. You are wearing some lace!â  Everyone had a good laugh. Now I try to always wear lace at a Lace Day - well, she might be looking down at us!! I like wearing lace. I made it, and like to Flaunt it!! I have been known to wear little doilies folded, and pinned to a neckline. I was told I had such a pretty jabot, one time â it was 3 little doilies folded, and pinned down the front of a blouse, each one overlapping the lower one so it looked like a jabot. I have a hankie âfallingâ out of a pocket of a jacket. It is always safety-pinned on the inside of the pocket, so it can not go missing. I have not tried that on an outside purse pocket meant for a cell phone, as a friend does, though that is a good idea. I have 3 prs of Needlelace Earrings that I wear. I have been advised to change the setting from HTML to Plain Text, to get rid of the strange bits, -- but I am using the Windows 10 email section, - and canât find where to change the system. I canât find that setting anywhere. Grrr!!! Last year, when over in the States, I found a Microsoft shop in the mall, and told the guy there that the MS guys were getting too clever for the rest of us. He took a good look at this white-haired little old lady, and just nodded! :) They have made this system so complex for many of us,- Windows 7 was much more user-friendly!! I, too, am not on Facebook, but enjoy Arachne so much. At IOLI conventions it is a joy to meet, face-to-face, with Arachne members and get to know them âfor realâ. [lace] Magazines & Geneology
Firstly, thanks for letting us know the IOLI Bulletin and the UK Lace magazines are out and about. We, down-Under have not received either of them yet. I watch for the post each day, but without success as yet! As to the research into the old Bobbins - I Love it, - so keep talking, Brian :) I made a bonnet for convicted "First Fleet' prisoner for the bonnet collection that was being made by a lady in Tasmania - a bonnet for every transported woman, and I found "My" lady's trial at the Old Bailey in 1786 . It was fascinating reading - she was Transported for the theft of 3 handkerchiefs. She had dropped a couple, luckily - or she would have been hanged! The history of Lace and bobbins, and all that era is fascinating, I think, and the more old lace I see, the more in awe of the "Old timers" I am - they did n ot have books to tell them how to do certain techniques (and few of them could read, anyway, - and they had only candle light, and poor spectacles, ..Gosh! they were so clever, really. I think it was delayed due to the Editor's illness, so I presume the Fall Bulletin will be late too. [lace] Lace Magazines
Yes the list has been quiet recently. I get the digest version, and there has been quite a gap since the last one. With regard to the Lace Guilds Publications, - Although we don't want the list to be filled with the "Me too" type messages, it would be nice if one person could mention when a UK Lace, IOLI Bulletin, or other regular publication arrives in their letter box, - so the rest of us know to look out for it. 3 (that I know of - including Me) were about 4 months late with the Spring Bulletin, I must say the Guilds are Excellent in replacing missing magazines, - promptly and without any hassle, - but sometimes we don't realize we are one missing. PostaL services are dismal these days, so we know we may have to wait a bit longer - for those of us in far-flung places! - but we don't want to miss out completely. I understand the Summer IOLI Bulletin Will come out - but not sure when, - the Autumn/Fall edition is about due too, now. I understand the Editor is ill, and I hope she has a full recovery. [lace] 2018 Congress Cancellation
Sorry for the delay in replying to this. I agree with you Jeri, - there is No room for nastiness on any Lace List. I have known of just 2, I think, - one on each of 2 lists, and the Moderator of each list soon clamped down on it. Other than these 2 people, I have always known only great friendship from other Lacemakers. I feel I have friends all over the world, and enjoy the chats and help and support. This is one of the Joys of Lacemaking - not just the making of lovely textiles, but the warm friendships that have come from it. Yes, we all have different likes and dislikes, but we can 'enjoy' our differences without being nasty!! Think how boring it would be if we all liked the same thing!! I hope the Brussels people can sort out the problems with OIDFA, and have a congress of some sort in 2018. I haven't been to an OIDFA one, but I know how much fun I get at the IOLI ones!! [lace] Tatting kit.
I have replied to Linda privately. Basically, the "Emergency" kit that lives in my handbag is a small coin-sized pouch with shuttles and a cropped pattern - just the minimum amount of instructions, for a simple ring and chain piece! (No Ball of thread -that is too bulky,). It is just something to fiddle with in Dr. waiting rooms, etc!! My other "Out and about" kit is slightly larger, and has the ongoing tatting, ball, spare shuttle, small snips or scissors, crochet hook, etc. That pouch measures about 7X5 inches. I had never seen - or heard!- of these needles before I took the tatting class at Indy, this year. A packet of them was in our kit that we were given for the class. They are wonderful! It was an amazingly comprehensive kit that our Teacher gave out, and it was a very enjoyable class. I am so glad I chose that class out of all the ones to choose from!! [lace] Lace at the Olympics
Fancy Lacemaking getting to the Olympics! Wonderful!! Lace has "arrived" ( after about 500 years!!! :) ) Yes, - in answer to Alice - there were bobbins hanging from the pillow, and the lacemaker was toying with them as she stood there, - but not making any lace, I don't think! [lace] Parcel email
"I am reluctant to click to find out more suspecting it is a scam.." That is Spam, Alex. Actually it is Ransomwear - it will freeze your computer and you will have to pay them - whoever they are - to unlock your computer. I have had a few of them, and I use the Shift and Delete keys together to completely remove each letter from my computer. Australia Post, Telstra, and even Paypal have been hacked, so I treat them alls the same - shift/delete, and click yes when the box appears asking if I really want to eliminate it! I have reported it, - but that has not stopped it appearing now and again. Why don't these people get a proper job, - not bother others with such rubbish! [lace] Wearing Lace
I am with you, Jeri, -- Wear lace -- Lots of it!!! As often as possible!! I do whenever I can - like at Lace Days! Many years ago, at one of our Lace Days I said my usual "Hello" to the late (and greatly missed) Gabrielle Pond. She paused, looked me up and down, - and then replied "Oh! I did not recognise you - you are not wearing any lace"!! Well, ..!! (It was said with a smile, though!) Next Lace Day I wore Lots of lace -- and when I spoke to her, again I got the up and down look, and then "Oh! I recognise you today, Hello"!! Said with a Very Big smile!!! She was such a lovely lady, and her knowledge of lace was massive, but she was so generous with sharing her knowledge, too. It was a treat to sit near her, and listen to her talking about some lace subject or other. Moral -- Wear lots of Lace - and be noticed!! :) After all, you have taken many hours to make beautiful lace, -- so go out and Flaunt it :) Regards from Liz in bitterly cold Melbourne, Oz. lizl...@bigpond.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Survey, and Convention
Survey - I am 1-C and 2-B We are safely home now, -- after a Very long day of flying from Indy to Melbourne!! Yuk!! But it was SO nice to meet up with everyone. My DH took some photos at the Arachne lunch which Janice organized for us -- thank you Janice, - and I have sent 4 of them to Devon, who I believe asked for some photos. I see she uses a different email address, than the one I have used previously, and I sent the photos to this new one that is used when she writes on Arachne, now, - so I hope she got the photos Ok. I am having some computer problems, (and need a whole new machine) so who knows where they ended up!! I sat opposite the other Elizabeth at the lunch, and it was so nice to meet her face to face! She had a very nice display of Sol type laces in the Exhibition room for us all to see and enjoy. [lace] Retirement.
Very best wishes, Brian, for your 'retirement' I, too, have just turned 80 -- obviously 1936 was a Vintage Year! Good pre-war quality! Your bobbin collection, and all your writings have been wonderful, and I am sure all Lacemakers will join me in saying Thank You for your efforts to help keep our craft, and it's wonderful history, alive, I hope all Lacemakers and their families are safe from the extremes of weather the planet is having at the moment. Here Down Under there have been the most terrible storms and floods - a 2000 km storm along the East coast - yes 2 thousand km long storm! Terrible flash floods etc. We, here in Melbourne missed them so are safe, but Sydney copped a terrible battering., as did Brisbane (Qld), right down to Launceston (in Tasmania) We saw, on TV news the tornados in USA. Just terrible. Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz, lizl...@bigpond.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] RE: IOLI convention
Elizabeth Correa -- I look forward to meeting you at the IOLI convention. We will be there a couple of days beforehand. What class will you be in? I am in the morning Tatting class - making the necklace shown on the IOLI convention list of classes. ( class 514 I think). It is always fun to meet up with others on this list, and I have made many friends though the list, and meeting them at Convention. I will have a husband tacking on!! I hope there will be some other husbands there, so he can find someone to talk to while I am busy learning tatting!! The Husband he has made friens with for the last 2 conventions we have been to, is unable to come this time, - so I hope he finds someone else to befriend! Saves me worrying about him getting bored. :) Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz. lizl...@bigpond.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
