Re: [lace] Baby piece
Thank you Janice, I now have this pattern and have printed it off to show my neighbour. I worked this for a young women 6 years ago I think when she had a baby girl to attach to a card. This type of design has been mentioned by several people so it appears to be a popular choice:-) Sue T I have sent a copy of my rocking horse pattern to Sue. Mine is a simple tape lace suitable for beginners, especially as the ending is all the threads tied together to form the tail. Any tallies can be replaced with beads or just done in a plait. Thanks for remembering it Jane. Wish we had somewhere to place patterns written in Word. Janice HI All, I'm thinking I have seen a tape lace rocking horse by Janice Blair. [lace] Baby piece
Hi spiders My neighbour, who I have been helping to learn to make lace over the months of this year has just become a grandmother again to a new baby girl and my husband suggested she might like to make a small piece of lace for the new baby. Now had we started a couple of months ago we might have achieved something to go on the card for the arrival, but that happened in the week and she is still working, slowly on and off on her poppy. One more petal to go. We have not had a lace session this month due to my husbands birthday and then some major family situation when he brother was shipping back to this country 8 months after a major accident which has left him with some major brain damage, so for a woman who already has a couple of serious health issues herself it has been a very stressful month and not conducive to calm lace making. Anyway I spoke to her this morning about the baby lace and she seemed pleased with the idea so I am again coming through all of you to ask if you have any suggestions of simple braid type lace pieces that might go into a frame on the babies wall and not be consigned to a drawer after the first few days. I have seen a stork but thats for the here and now, not for a young child, have seen the elephants on the lace guild site which looked good, so are there any other good pieces out there. I will check out my books during the afternoon to see if anything comes up but its difficult to know what pieces are available without having every book that exists and most I have never seen or heard of but I do have a goodly number myself so far. I am sure there are one or two grandmothers out there so would be interested to know what ideas you might have used yourselves. Re: [lace-chat] Pennsic Wars
Our group was an informal lot, and met up in a piece of privately owned ancient woodland with a big field attached. For a number of years it worked very well with a few competitions of hawk throwing and knife throwing. One session where they were working with flint and steel to light a fire. I learned quite a bit from one of our friends about cooking on the camp fire and many pleasant evenings spent round log fires, chatting. The sight of a field half full of tents and tipis with candle lanterns burning and some of the fires lit is magical. Many of the folk there took up some sort of craft, beadwork, weaving on finger looms and jewellery making so my lace pillow fitted in very well. We imported a few books from America about Buckskinning and still have those in our shelves today all these years later. Our costumes were generally made with cotton, wool or leather, most as practical as possible for working around the tent during the day and then dressing up in better for the evenings and my blanket coat is still up in the loft, which we made out of a whitney blanket. Some of our day stuff was a bit tongue in cheek and we once organised a hobby horse race with the men starting off running the course between the tents guaranteed to have us all in noisy laughter all afternoon. In the evening my husband sang a song he had made up mentioning various people and their part in the race was very well received. For One of the arachne lace exchanges my partner sent me the humming bird (before I bought the disc and made one myself). It was definitely the best one I could have received and is now attached to my long pocket which is part of my evening dressing up outfit, as well as some lace cuffs and a lace edged kerchief I made to wear to keep drafts off my neck and prevent pain but looked ideal. So I was able to bring both hobbies together for about 7 years before we stopped going, but we still have the costumes stored. We also went to the re enactors market when it was held in Oxford one year and close to there another year. Ruth Goodman was there manning her stall which was all about Tudor times which is her favourite time but she also does other television programs from other times down the centuries for british television one of which featured Pat (sorry my brains gone dead) the lady who got a cbe for services to lacemaking last year who showed her how to work a piece of bobbin lace to give to the lady of the mansion when they did a christmas special. Right time to get back into the here and now, I have some work to do. Sue T Dorset UK Okay, now I know it is SCA. I didn't know anything about either when I lived in Pennsylvania. I had heard the name, probably on Arachne at some time but never followed it up. Sounds like fun. I remember going to a reenactment in Lichfield, England when my kids were little and it sounds a lot like that. I went again on a visit and this time found a bobbin maker and bought my one and only jingle bobbin. I used to demo at another reenactment in Illinois every September, but it was only for a weekend, which was enough sometimes as it could be very cold. Re: [lace-chat] Pennsic Wars
There are many re enactment groups in this country. Many different times in history and includes American, Roman, Tudor and any other time you can think of.It amazes me how much time and effort goes into researching to get things right and so many times crafts come in as well. We had someone come and demonstrate how a forge worked and allowed people to try their hand at it. My husbands character was of a scot who had gone out to the americas on a vessel and been left behind, so I ended up making the red and beige jacket, kilt, knitted white socks and then 18 months into my lacemaking learning I made him a jabot and cuffs to wear with the jacket. We bought a pair of trews which were worn more than the kilt (it can be very chilly even in August at many of these events). Although I spent more time in colonial type costume with the lovely tight laced wool waistcoat which kept my back nicely warm, he made me a couple of different leather fringed dresses, hand stitched and beaded, sewed beads onto my moccies and also some leggins up to the knee also beaded. My possibles bag was made by him for me with a fabulous turtle design on the front, cut away leather with felt showing through, plaited leather around the shell part, beads, fringes with bells on the bottom so they could tell whether i was in a hurry or not going about my business on the field by the jingles I made, I heard someone say âhere comes a woman on a mission,â LOL. His bag had a bear paw on the front, almost his signature for a while, beautiful work. I was always stunned by his ideas and the end product and able to offer suggestions sometimes. I tried to make a dream catcher once with a bear paw inside the lace to go in the centre of the ring, its ok but not as good as i would have liked, but I was still a fairly new lacemaker at the time, so i wont beat myself up about it. Another one had the dragonfly from one of my patterns. It hung on my wall for a long time and I hung it outside our tent at quite a few camps in the awning part. We got into this via the American confederate and union balls and country music venues we went to. In my folder on Arachne (HURWITZEND) there is a photo of us dancing in my lace ball gown and he in mountain man gear I think. You see I have always been a lover of lace Sue T Dorset Seems odd to me that you in Britain are reenacting American history and over here the SCA are doing reenactments loosely based on European history. I guess whatever appeals works. Kind of like lace where we all have our own favorite type of lace. Re: [lace-chat] Pennsic Wars
Sounds amazing and I did just look on google. Didn't see anything lace though sadly. We used to do living history American fur trapper times and we made a Tipi and used it for a couple of seasons camps. Amazing dwellings and I would think the yurt would be fantastic. Moving the 22 ft poles about because too difficult for us so we went back to using a trailer caravan and using a white wall A frame we made instead just to sit around in the day time. I took my lace pillow there several summers and did some bits of work. Always something that it didn't matter if it got dirty but would be useable if it came home clean at the end of the time. [lace] How can you estimate thread
I have just finished drooling over the most beautiful piece of Russian lace, it was a bolero/waistcoat/shrug type garment. Fairly simple but so elegant I want to try to draw a pattern in a similar way as I have no idea where I could buy a pattern like that. All the russian lace patterns I have are picture type things, or collars. I almost made one of those but got involved in another longer project for my Mum in the time I could have used for it so didnât actually get it done.I think I would get much more mileage out of a waistcoat than a collar. BUT by question is how on earth do I calculate the amount of thread I might need to purchase at the same time to make sure I had enough for the whole thing. I have tried in the past to estimate for a set of napkins and have lots of spools in my box waiting for me to maybe make some lace for a tablecloth to match maybe, but I dont want to be short of thread either. I have chosen my thread of choice (Gutterman silk) and also the colour of choice as I have one in my box. Most of the pattern will be trails of tape/braid so just passives and joining links and then little bits of pattern, but not much between areas once I work out what I like and how to draw it onto my pattern. I am hoping to make this my big project for after the christmas pieces are done, so to be worked over december, january and february maybe so it gives me chance to attempt the pattern and get that right before I begin, but I would like to get the thread before that is done and I can begin. Re: [lace] How can you estimate thread
Thank you for the voice of sanity, My mind couldn't consider where to begin but having read this it is so obvious and I bet several of you are laughing at the screen right now. So first to find a paper pattern shape and start playing with a pencil. I knew it would be lots of thread especially the worker pair but thank you for reminding me about the next one too it as well which obviously does go off wandering a bit more than just the straight passing way.Yes your answer helps a great deal so I will save it to file for later on. Many thanks Sue T Hello Sue and everyone For a pattern for a garment, using a minimal number of bobbins, the broad answer is 'lots' of thread. One can get a good idea of the amounts per passive by placing a single thread all along the curving trail, then measuring that thread. I do this for the entire length if it is a small Russian tape pattern, could get away with measuring a quarter of the design if it is large, multiply by 4 for the length per passive bobbin. Allow more thread on the passive edge pairs for the extra twist, if using CTCT at the edges, and especially for the passive pair that will depart with the weaver to do any fillings, and though it seems a small amount allow for the tethers on all bobbins as well! Hope this helps. [lace] One of my bobbins
I was recently given quite a few midlands bobbins by a lace maker who had stopped making lace and there are quite an assortment. Plenty of different woods and some which seem to be quite a good quality plastic but one stands out as different. It is white and has the wire twisted down the shank and is a bit heavier than the rest. I am expecting it to be bone because of that but there dont seem to be any flecks in it at all. Some had been gifted to the lady by their previous owner who had retired before that. Normally I just have the bobbins I have bought or have been bought but end up using certain ones that work best for me in that they are nice to handle and hold sufficient thread for whatever pattern I decide to make. Is there somewhere where I can look at images of bone bobbins. It is just plain apart from the wire twisted through it, not like one I just saw on ebay. I am not concerned with worth, buying or selling, but interested to understand what it is that I have. Re: [lace] a tiny lace dress...
What a sad but beautiful task to have undertaken and a beautiful way to lay this child to rest. Condolences to all the family who must feel devastated at the moment. When my father died in 2003 I made all the members of my family a small bobbin lace star and most still exist and are put up on the christmas tree each year, so they are part of the family Christmases which include remembering him especially at this time. maybe you can do something like that for you all, the butterfly sounds lovely and can help ease the sadness over time. Be gentle with yourself but something will spur you on into the next piece of lace. Sue T Dorset UK I have mainly lurked for a while, but do read each and every email. Just have not had heart to write much lately. But I did want to share what was recently made lace wise... I knit a baby christening dress in pink with white roses. It had a beautiful winding leaf pattern down the front with lace vines. Around the neck were small leaves that had some white roses on it. It was a sad labor of love, as my Granddaughter Rayne Ann was born Monday 7/28/14 and passed away 44 minutes later. Today we buried her in the dress. I had wanted to make her a white silk dress with some hand made lace, but just did not have the time to do that. Now she is wrapped in knit lace for eternity, something made with love. We had found out a little over a month ago she would not make it much past birth due to a defect in her heart, a hernia that allowed her stomach, liver, and intestines in chest. That in turn kept her lungs from developing as only one had room and that was not developed enough to sustain life. When my Son and Daughter in law chose to allow her to pass peacefully I knew that a dress would be made by me for her to wear. My son chose the yarn the day we got the bad news and I worked on it, only finishing the day before she was born. Tonight, I am hoping to work on some lace if the motivation ever comes back. [lace] Need a leaf for my poppy
Or so I keep being told, or rather asked when people see my new poppy. I made two petals using Janicesâ pattern (thank you Janice) but drew a new slightly bigger one to replicate some poppies growing in my garden at the moment (I took one gently apart and drew round the petals to get an idea of shape and size. I drew the black lines on, as in the original idea but also included a lovely little gold button which looks amazing and I am very pleased with it. I have taped it into a small stem which I have attached to a brooch pin. This suits me better than the way I finished off the original one in 2007 and this one has definitely seen better days but has done a lovely job. I have several different flower books but I cant see any leaf patterns that I have been shown are the right ones for a poppy, so for now am not doing anything. Has anyone else made a leaf to go on theirs and if so what shape leaf did you use please?I could make one with the ordinary poppy petal shape, but the images show almost a holly leaf shape. I am using Coton Perle 8 so its not fine threads. Happy Lace making, I am currently being very good and making one other flower to go with two that I made several years ago in finer threads and various colours to fit into an old clock dome, so will finally complete one of my long term UFOâs. I promised myself I would at last before I get swept up into lots of other second half of the year items. Hi Alex, it was a small drop of blood and the vanish didn't seem to help at all, I didn't use salt as I can never remember which way to do it and have set stains in, in the past this way which i didn't want to do again. I used the neat liquid I normally use in my washing machine, rubbed it into the stain with my finger tip and it came out. It then went into the machine with a normal load and is sparkly bright clean now, thank you. Sue T Hi Arachnids I’m a little late replying and am surprised that on one mentioned blood stains should first be soaked in salt water, 1 teaspoon to 1 pint, preferably immediately, but even if it has dried it helps to soften the stain. Thank you to several people who advised me of ways to remove the oil stains off of the carpet, which is now clean and looking good. Since then I had some dental work and have since found a small blood spot on the shoulder of a blue cotton blouse, so would things like vanish rubbed in remove it now it has dried on? Now for the lace content, I am going to be working on some bridal lace (ring pillow, garter, that kind of thing) in the coming year for two brides with an italian connection so I am wondering if there is anything special that might give it that little italian edge. [lace] Care of lace
Hi Spiders Over the last 5 years I have made 3 specific pieces of bridal lace waiting for the first of the family brides to need them and then the first one decided they would get married on their holidays, something I only heard about 8 days before the whole family left the country for the holiday and wedding combined. In that time I was able to run the silver elastic into the garter, sew a flower on and box and send ,everything was here just to go, thankfully. The handkerchief edge I made and Liz In Australia challenged me to get it sew up while she was away a couple of years ago so I had accepted that challenge and got on with that so that was also ready on time, thank you Liz and the horseshoe lace was also already made but I had struggled to get the right shape of acetate. I had to tackle that which I finally got to work ok, so with a very tight deadline I did get it all there on time and my sister packed it all away in her hand luggage to make sure it was safe. Her initial feedback when she received it was very pleasing. Her subject line was Oh Wow, so I was happy. Hopefully the bride was also pleased with it. The horseshoe and hanky are hers to keep and I need to find the information about how to turn it into a baby bonnet for her whenever she decides to have a family but not immediately. When the garter comes back to me I need to remove the elastic, wash it carefully and pack it away again into the acid free tissue paper waiting for the next wedding. Because one branch of my family all live in Canada I have decided to design and make some lace just for them, to save the garter going backwards and forwards over the atlantic with the possibility of delays or loss and would like some information please to tell my sister the best way to preserve and pack the lace items for safe keeping in their changeable weather. At the moment it is shorts and tee shirt weather and from October to April at least it is Minus figures and snow for weeks on end. I know we have Arachnids in every part of the world and hope that someone with the experience of that kind of climate would be kind enough to give me some ideas. I am making and packing in tissue and minimal packaging for her to take back home in her suitcase and then buy packaging and store in the best possible way until needed. One item is for multiple use so will need to give her the washing and packing instructions for the garter but the other items I make need to be kept presentable for individual use and gifting to the brides on their day. My great nieces and nephews are aged from 7 - 17 at the moment so the lace wont be made all at once but over the years in my time, so will need to be stored for the future. I want to make them while I am able and we never know when we will have to stop, for health reasons. Many thanks for reading and to those who might help. Re: [lace] Lacemaking on BBC
Thank you Christine, looking forward to seeing that, will need to keep my eyes open for it. i agree it would be really good to see a little more of the lace making than in some programs. Sue T Dorset UK Yesterday I was filmed by the BBC making lace, for an episode of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. Presenters James Braxton and Lesley Joseph were looking around Waddesdon Manor, and they were also shown some antique lace. They then watched me working, and Lesley had a go! She grasped it very quickly and worked a couple of rows. It was great fun and hopefully the BBC will include more footage than the few seconds of Lacemaking they showed on Country file earlier this month! The program is due to be broadcast next spring. [lace] Boxwood
Countryfile was on the british television yesterday evening while I was busy but as I usually watch this weekly I had set it to record. Dinner over I settled down and set the recording away and suddenly remembered the mention of the bobbin lace group in connection with the box wood. So I gave a little less attention to the cardigan I was sewing up and a bit more to the television, luckily I had got it already pinned properly so didnât make a mess of sewing it up. Once I saw the man with the lathe working I kept my eyes glued to the screen which was lucky as the lace pillows came next and had I been looking down I would have missed them, it was brief but nice and clear if you were watching at that moment. We did get a good shot from behind one lace maker, so could see her work on the pillow, bobbins and threads. Nice to see lace on the television, even if only a tiny snippet. Re: [lace] Lacemaking on Countryfile (hopefully)
Looking forward to seeing that Christine. Sue T Dorset UK Yesterday, I spent a very exciting day with 2 friends, Eileen and Jan, being filmed making lace for Countryfile. We are members of Isis lacemakers, and were asked at very short notice by The Lace Society if we could attend. Of course, any other plans (such as work) for that day were cancelled! It was a lovely sunny day and we were given just a few minutes to set up a display on a picnic table! We were then filmed making lace. We were not interviewed on camera, but got to meet the lovely John Craven, and also spotted Ellie Harrison, who I've always thought a pretty girl; believe me, in the flesh she is quite a beauty. We were part of a feature on boxwood and its uses, and had been asked to bring along boxwood bobbins. Also featured were a wood turner using a bow lathe, and musicians playing boxwood wind instruments. The BBC crew were so nice, everything was so calm and laid back. So, look out for Countryfile on 1st June BBC1. As it usually pulls in an audience of around 6 million, we could be seen by a lot of people (potential lacemakers??). Hopefully there will be more than a fleeting glance, but even if we end up on the cutting room floor we had a great time! Re: [lace] de-fuzzing lace in progress?
I was always happy to work with my cats about and just keep my lace as clean as possible. One of them is shown on my website in his favourite position laying along the arm of my chair and sometimes just holding the ends of my spangles down on the pillow. He never harmed anything and just a tough on his paw was enough to make him move it slightly further away if I felt it was necessary. He was a lovely friend and occasionally made sure I put the lace aside so we could both have some cuddle time. He is much missed but wont be replaced but I enjoyed my lacemaking then and I still do now and have managed to achieve both, having my lace hobby and the animals while they lived as well. Mind you I have never managed to achieve any of the incredible laced I have seen from both Clay and Carol. Sue T If someone asked me to choose between my lace and my four-legged companions, I'd have a monumental crisis! So far, I have chosen to make lace for my own pleasure and the expansion of my knowledge of lacemaking. So if a stray hair shows up that cannot be removed, I have a reminder of a dear pet who may no longer be with me. Currently, I have a cat who loves high places, and there is no place in my lace room that appeals to him. However, my small dog insists that I pull up another chair so he can sit/lie beside me while I work. My life would be very diminished without them! Re: [lace] Re: Lace with and without an end use
I did work some small samples of a type of piece, especially the complex bucks point which is in my folder, before I went on to make a full piece but as my teacher always gave me a corner of a pattern which I copied and using the computer got a square for beds hanky or square edging for photo frame (or could have been a hanky) that is what I made. She occasionally showed us a piece of her lace which might have been withof, Duchess or other beautiful dolphins, it seemed appropriate looking at full pieces as a piece of art or working item. I have been reading your two process vs product and have been amazed and fascinated that you never finish. Will have to train my brain to accept that idea and maybe I will get to try some of the other beautiful types of lace pieces that appeal to me. Thank you ladies. Sue T Dorset UK This is the process vs. product argument again. I'm an unrepentant process-oriented person. I have no particular use for lace. I don't wear Robin P. Re: [lace] Milanese books - correction
Talking about coincidences, I used to live in the town for the first 29 years of my life but dont remember ever seeing the lace section in the museum until years after I had moved away and was visiting my parents, just after I started making lace, probably about 2001. I have since visited several times and bought some of their patterns for myself and friends. I decided to make a clock face in bucks point lace (using Alex Stillwells pattern) which keeps begging me to do it. It was to be a gift to my sister who left the town 20 years ago to live in Canada. Her son makes fabulous wood items so we got our collective thoughts together via the internet and he is making the body of the clock plus he bought the face when he saw something he loved, while I get on with making the lace. When i received the measurements I realised that the piece in question wouldbe too big to fit, so reduced it and Alex kindly checked it and told me what thread would work on the new size. Since then I found a piece of lace made by me which was made using one of the patterns redrawn from an old piece of lace and sold by the museum to raise money to aid the preservation of the Lace Dealers Pattern Book. Symbols within the lace which I made because I just loved the pattern are just so right for my sister, and is a much better fit for the clock as is, so she is getting that but I still Must now make this other lace but can now return to the proper size and make it just for Me:-) I have also bought the introduction to Milanese lace book you mentioned which is very good and I have plans to improve my skills in this very beautiful lace. Now if any of you know how to make each day last twice as long or me be able to speed up more than my current speeds I would be very grateful. There is so much beautiful lace out there I must make. I think I might have to abandon making lace for others in the future and just keep working on all these forms of lace for the love it them rather than making something with an end use and an end user. Re: [lace] Lace with and without an end use
When you consider the hours spent on any project they have to go to someone who will love and appreciate them, or find a home on our walls, or whatever. Those items that have been sitting in my box or in a folder are a bit sad and not so alive. I have got lots of books and patterns and every time I look through them I have a list longer than my arms of items I would love to make but when made where would they go. I have run out of wall space. I am also from a time when I make what I need and need what I make or a gift for someone special. Only occasionally have I given someone something and seen the blank look on their face. They have no concept of the time and skills used, the craft or the value of this hand made gift, so I am more careful these days. Sue T Dorset Uk where we have had a bright day, living near the coast means its always a bit cooler than I would like but always grateful for the sunshine. Sue brought up an interesting topic. Making lace with an end use and a recipient, or making lace for the love of it. Me, I find that I like making things with a use in mind, and I tend to choose those projects. Handkerchief edgings, bookmarks, applique for a T shirt, a decoration for a particular item of clothing is what draws me. But I know of others who just like to make lace, and perhaps no actual contemplated use is necessary. What kind of a lace maker are you? And do you have any idea why? Me? I think it's because I am, at heart, a German peasant, who needs things to be useful. What about you? Brilliant, I loved the piece and what a nice change to see something given 30 minutes rather than 5 or so which is definitely not enough. He seemed completely out of his depth for just a few minutes but you got him right in to it and his responses were pretty good. I went into the lace making without any interest in its history 12 years ago, but of course it doesn't take long to find they are all interlinked but I did feel you linked the old and the modern so well. Certainly we have all noticed that over the last couple of years fashion has included lace in many ways again. Sue T Dorset UK Hi all, Good news to share. I landed an interview on our local TV station to talk about Lace - a 30 minute interview. The anticipation was getting to me, I had to send them questions - they wanted five, I sent 15 (thanks to help from lace friends); they wanted five pictures; I sent them 70. I had been giving my talk Lace is Everywhere so much of what I would speak about was done - though I did more. Please take a moment to watch the show the lace interview begins at about 32.15 into the clip. [lace] beginners bookmark
Hi spiders, I am teaching my next door neighbour to make bobbin lace, she has had just a few lessons only so far and progressing quite well. I am starting her off working the christine springett spider next week for her grandson and am not sure if she wants to do the same but different colours for her slightly younger granddaughter. is there another simple pattern that the girls naturally gravitate to, maybe just a similar simple shape that can be done in cloth stitch and colour. I have to be away for two of our usually meet up afternoons after next week so hopefully something she can just work on her own. I would like to be able to offer her a choice if there is one she is capable of. So far we have worked on the usual cloth stitch starter piece in very thick thread then another one with finer thread and a variety of ways hs, cl st, and others with twists in, and now on a grid pattern, working half stitch ground and then whole stitch ground, back to hs stitch ground. I could set her up with the second piece and another set of bobbins so they are both up and working on the pillows before I leave her to it, so I want something just rhythmical cloth stitch really. Re: [lace] Cotton
I used this thread several years ago when I made an Alex Stillwell piece out of her Geometric book, looked a bit like tipis to me around the square hanky frame I made. The pattern was bucks point, so quite fine and in the early part of the pattern i did have one or two problems with it pulling apart, about the S or Z twist I think, or maybe at the beginning of the spool. Once it had happened twice I was fairly careful with it and the piece worked up nicely and after a hefty push from Elizabeth in Australia ;-) I actually got it finished off and around the edge of my hanky. Have fun Ann. Sue T Dorset UK Whilst I haven't seen that brand of 60/2 Egyptian cotton I'm pretty sure it will be fairly fine, and being 2 ply will work up into a soft lace which drapes well, so suitable for clothing trim. Re: [lace] Re: Stunned
Some years ago my DH used one of my early pieces of Torchon Lace taken from Elizabeth Wades book to frame around a photo of my parents at their wedding which hung on her wall for some years afterwards. Last year she was very ill and we feared for her survival, but she is made of stronger stuff than we thought, :-) and then it was decided her independent life was over and she was prepared to go into a care home. Three of my siblings dismantled her home, leaving basic essentials to go into the home with her, threw away masses of stuff, normal clutter, but also this particular photograph including my lace. We didn't find out until she was settled into her room and we were able to visit. She had none of her items which made her room home, except her clock which was a wedding gift. Eventually some of us have restored some of her photos and other little pleasures of life but of course the lace is lost. I am going to take her a new piece that has been hanging on our wall for several years to replace it, but putting a label on the back tell them to return to me when she is finished with it. I was disappointed with my sisters for not returning it to me first. Sue T Dorset UK Jane wrote Thank you for all the comments. Jean, thank you for telling me about Bill Blake. I'm so glad he enjoyed this pattern. It's difficult to tell from the photo but the lace looks beautifully made. I wondered if it was someone clearing his estate and it seems very sad to think the work hasn't gone to members of the family to be treasured, but as Sue said, better that the lace should go to someone who wants it rather than it be thrown away. Thank you for all the conversation, its been interesting and helpful. Its great to have a community like arachne to 'chat' with. Re: [lace] Stunned
My guess is that the seller of the lace has no idea of the value of the pieces. And I don't think Jane should feel too upset about the pieces being sold from her patterns. From what Jean Leader says they weren't made to be sold for profit (or loss, as in this case). We have all made pieces of lace from patterns in books and magazines, and if no-one wants to keep what I have made, I would rather they were sold when I die, than put in the trash. Thank you ladies, I love to learn from you all. I want to use this on a piece of clothing so wonder if cotton might be a smarter plan? although the dress is not cotton, so might the anchor embroidery thread work as well? Not sure at the moment whether to to try to match or contrast colour. When i took the pattern out last night I wanted to get started, but now I think I will need to check out the threads first. Thank you all. Sue T Mouline is stranded cotton so they are possibly suggesting you use one strand, or more for gimps.  Quite a few of my Russian lace books have stranded thread pictured and it's what we were given to work with in Moscow. The easiest way is just to see which thread is the right size to fit x pairs in the braids.  It might be finer than you think, and if it's too thick the plaited fillings will look clumsy. Jacquie in Lincolnshire Mouline means stranded cotton, so DMC stranded embroidery cotton, Anchor stranded embroidery, any other brand ... they are all pretty similar. Hi Shelly, I am just about to complete two coasters just as you describe. Not sure which country you are in but I am in the UK and have purchased the acrylic coasters from Clairs lace in Bournemouth. I chose her as I have purchased them from her direct at a lace day and when I ran out I purchased via phone so knew they were right for my project. They are not huge and only take a smallish piece of lace, could measure mine if it would help. again just a satisfied customer. These make a nice useful object, a lovely way to show lace and nice for gifts. I have gifted several of these in the last couple of years. Sue T Dorset UK Hello spiders! I do hope everyone has survived the cold weather and snows we have had in the US and elsewhere. I have been thinking of ways to display and use my lace pieces. The one piece is a square and after thinking about it some I thought it would be great inside a coaster form. Does anyone know of anyplace to find such a thing? I am thinking something along the lines of acrylic cover that would protect the lace but be functional as a coaster. Does that make sense? Thanks! Re: [lace] print on demand
As Susan says, quite a few books have changed over... 2 on a 'lacy theme' that spring to mind are Tatting Collage and Mastering Tatting, both by Lindsay Rogers. I have both of these books and they certainly lay relatively flat and are just as easily handled as any other book! The only other 'binding' that I would 'enjoy' is the idea of Ulrike Voelker where she produced the torchon books in ringbinders. This is also extremely useful to the lacemaker as it also lays flat! On demand book publication in A4 or the american equivalent could be good, as the purchaser could provide her own binder then she or he could colour coordinate according to the type of lace inside the folder!! As for Noelene, if you do produce another book Noelene, we all need to know about it and how to get hold of it! Sue T Dorset UK Happy New Year, everyone! I like the idea of spiral binding when it comes to being able to open the book to work from it or to copy a pattern. I also see the problems with not being able to see what the book is. We use binding systems at work, so I'm somewhat familiar with them. You don't always need to use a clear plastic cover page. Re: [lace] Print On Demand books
That's a surprise as, here in the States (where I know you live) even OfficeMax, Staples, Kinkos etc offer spiral binding. Two of the difficulties with spiral binding are 1 no spine, so you have to pull them off the shelf to identify which book you want, and 2 the plastic covers can rip off leaving a sharp remnant. I am in half a dozen of so fo these groups and it's just so easy for everyone to post their photos, tell their stories and view everyone else''s posts. Re: [lace] Miss Channer's Mat
I also have Miss Channers mat pricking ,hidden away until I obtained enough skills to work it, now I feel able to I find that in my estimation it will take 200 plus pairs which means I will have o finish every project I have on the go so I have enough bobbins, ah well maybe later in the year. Re: [lace] Lace8
I say about my lace work, is that it keeps me out of mischief (but then I sometimes take mine out on a funster rally, my DH was looking for mischief but only found the funsters:-) I am still using Lace 2000 and it has just gone on my computer again after a change of hard drive and enjoyed remaking one of my patterns recently. It is great to be able to see your motifs come together and looking like a professional, clear pattern to work from plus it gives you the ability to change the grid size and gives you a glow of satisfaction to see it in print. I have used the book and instructions which is a real help. So your work has certainly been appreciated over the years. Sue T Dorset in a lull between storms. Dear Sue, that was a nice compliment to wake up to this morning!I do enjoy the challenge involved in solving the computer problems, and, as my mother would've said it keeps me off the streets!Very big grin!! Re: [lace] UFOs
Happy New Year from us here in Dorset as well.I cleared up lots of little lace pieces during the last 2 or 3 months of the year and have now in the middle of making a gift but have sat and begun to list ufos of sewing, lace and things like that that must be done soon, then a list ofodd ufos in my little box with no end user yet. When I heard about an engagement I have made items of lace over the years, but they dont always lead to a wedding. One piece wasn't ready in time so still sits as pieces of lace in my box and needs to be all sewn together, I wanted to have a couple of horseshoes waiting so that if I heard of an engagement, special wedding anniversary or something I didn't have to rush at making one, so have left them unfinished. One piece I have been unsuccessful in cutting out the right shape acetate to sandwich in between so is not finished. Now need more acetate. Most of my ufos are down to the sewing completion my weakness it would appear. I haven't yet left any unfinished lace in the making on pillows. I have been asked to teach my next door neighbour to make lace so need to get some items together for that and someone else wants me to show her little craft group how to do the needle tatting which I made for several bauble coverings. I have plans to learn another craft which means reading and trying, watching video clips and seeing how I get on, but I have more faith in myself now having used this method to learn the needle tatting in 2013. No big lace projects in mind yet this year so I need to go through my books and choose my patterns and ideas for the future. First time in a very long time I haven't had a long list of things to do already, :-) I dislike sitting without ideas of what to do next though, so need to find something soon. Sue T Dorset UK Happy New Year to all fellow spiders, have you made any resolutions? Mine is to finish all UFOs before I start any further new ones, to date it is:- 1 almost finished Honiton tortoise sampler, 1 very large tablecloth edging ( just 10 repeats to do) 1 Multicoloured dragon (very large) 1 Bucks Point snowman (started for Christmas but not completed in time ) 1 braid glove in black , oh and 1 cross stitch of 2 Chinese children started about 3years ago I'm ashamed to say but put away and forgotten. Re: [lace] Photos
Clay and I are trying to find a work around / secondary password to allow people outside the United States to upload their own photos. We need a computer literate person outside the USA to help test this, please! Meanwhile the easiest approach is for me to upload them for you. Send me a private email with: the photos title of the lace (if there is one) a description of the lace tags (e.g. Needle Lace, Honiton, Binche etc.) what set you wish the photos to be put in I do not find Flickr to be intuitive to use (other than for simply viewing the photos), and it keeps changing it's layout, and where you find out how to edit info and sets. So adding all the info when uploading is much the easiest And for Janet Theaker, who doesn't seem to get my messages directly: I guess you are not receiving my emails as you have not replied to any of my earlier messages offering to upload your photo. It is much easier for me if I get all the information at once. Please let me have that, and I will then upload it.
