Re: [lace] Learning lace on your own
I was pleased to read this, it makes a huge amount of sense and I learned this first going on to bucks beds etc. There are lots I haven't tackled but am usually happy working what I make. I used to get very angry at my mistakes, but am much more forgiving these days. Made a stupid mistake the other day by cutting off my bobbins while only half way through sewing in and tying off. Corrected most but still forgot one and cut it off short For a few minutes I thought it might have to be scrapped but the threads that weren't tied in go into a spider so all the other threads are holding them so that is our this year christmas piece and I am content to be so. Too much on my mind at the moment, but the lace work is still theraputic and helping to keep me calm:-) Hopefully I wont make the same errors the next time round. Sue T Dorset UK, where the stormy winds are blowing a bit wild this morning One reason for starting with Torchon is that is geometric on 45 degrees and if you make a mistake such as not closing the pin or forgetting a twist it is soo obvious and it might not be so obvious in other laces. So it's great if you're the type of person who wants to know that their work is perfect. Personally, I prefer my work to have "design features" and don't fret if there's a mistake (or even a lot of them). It's just for me, and even if I give it away, the recipient doesn't usually know it isn't perfect. I don't want lacemaking to be a chore - I do it because I enjoy it. Well done, that's exactly how I taught myself Bucks but I used Geraldine Stotts book "A Visual Introduction to Bucks Point Lace" I ended up with lots of little lengths of lace which being me I did not want to just waste, so I made a christening outfit for a small doll and decorated it with all the lengths ( including lace round the bottom of the drawers) if you would like to see it it's on my pictures on the photo site. Re: [lace] Thread advice please
Hi Brenda, Remembered your book very soon after sending the original email and checking out threads and numbers got it about right I think judging by an email from another Arachnid, so am happy to change threads for the next one and expect it to be much better. I took the finished one off the pillow and while its not the best piece of lace I have ever made its not too bad. hanging up with the christmas decorations it will look ok, so at least I dont need to throw it away or put it into a folder never to see the light of day. I have two other threads which appear to be the right size for that change, so next one will he worked using one of those, Many thanks and when you leave our county of Dorset you are more than welcome to take the wet and the wind with you:-) Sue T In dryer and brighter Dorset today. Re: [lace] Tatting left handed
Funny isn't it? I taught myself to tat after seeing an elderly man tatting at a craft show around 45 years ago. I got a shuttle, and a basic book (can't remember which one, cept it had an orange cover) and taught myself left handed (shuttle in left, thread in right). I've never had a problem with patterns etc, neither have I with crochet - hook in left, thread in right again. All I have to remember is that if I'm doing something like a jacket, then the right side is the left side. Not a problem as far as I'm concerned. Re: [lace] Thread advice please
Thank you folks, Having sent the email, got one reply back suggesting I might put more threads in. I did put an extra one in on the outside edge but not the inside which would have benefitted from an extra one as well I do feel that the whole thing will be too spidery thin for the best look. I started to think what other thread might work and got Brendas book out. I hadn't really got an idea of what thread would fit the bill, but took a sensible look through and actually did look at the 27, 28 wpc threads realising I do have a couple of threads which fit the bill. So thank you, as ever for the help and I am really rather pleased with myself for thinking that through and coming up with the same sort of numbers. What a long way I have come with Brenda's book and with lace via Arachne. Sue T Dorset UK Hello Sue and everyone You've enlarged the pattern 119% so I'm thinking the thread size should be increased by that. Brok 36/2 and E.C. 36/2 are 32 and 31 wraps respectively. Doing the arithmetic, dividing the 32 by 1.19 I get 27-28 wraps for the slightly thicker thread. Now to find an accessible thread. Madeira Cotona 30 is 29 wraps in Brenda's T4Lace, could do quite well. If you have that book, check out the 27- and 28-wrap columns. My go-to would be the Sulky 30 wt. in the 27 wraps section. Does this help? [lace] Thread advice please
I am working one of Christine springetts circular pieces in a bangle and carried on using the 36/2 she mentioned only using egyptian cotton which I like. But, to get it to sit in my bangle I increased the size of the pattern to 119% and carried on with it anyway. Of course now I can see that while some can be increased without too much of a problem this was not the best choice on this occasion. I did mull over the threads I had but didnât know how best to decide how far to change it and what would have worked better. This was sort of a trial piece so need to know what to use for the actuals please if anyone can advice me. Have been very stressed lately (due to life), but found sitting with my lace pillow yesterday evening quite calmingI do need to make some more but want them to be right and look lovely so all advice would be very welcome. Re: [lace] Tatting
The particular pattern I am going to attempt is from the be stitched.com site talled Tatted Beaded Ornament. A gorgeous green tatted rings, then loops of chain between the 2nd round of pattern. Thread size 30 DMC cebelia thread and size 11 beads for anyone interested in that level of detail. It says on that row to put a large number of beads on the shuttle thread and obviously pushing of enough of the beads for each loop, which are between a single ring each time they have used 16 beads per loop. This particular piece lays over a christmas bauble. I am now off to continue on and maybe finish off a first biggish piece for me, a bookmark which is going to become a bracelet for my great granddaughter. Thanks for your reply which I will add to my notes for the future. At last I can see a future in tatting which I have never managed before. Quite proud of managing it at last. Feels good. [lace] Re: [lace-chat] Caring for needles
Some of the needles I have have been around quite a time and the ones I have left in their plastic insert seem to be ok, just this other lovely set which I thought would be a good emergency kit in the caravan has obviously got damp and rusted. I not remember ever seeing the option of either stainless steel when buying but I understand what you mean, so will keep my eyes open in the future. I would like to set up a little kit to take about with me but avoiding this in the future in the same way you keep a first aid kit and dont want to find rusty scissors inside if you ever need to use it, so if anyone has other suggestions for a way they successfully store and carry small amounts like this around, crochet hooks, tatting hooks or whatever. I have had a couple of very good suggestions thank you, but still haven't cracked this storage problem for the future. Sue T I think the problem lies in the fact that a lot of needles, pins and crochet hooks etc. (sewing, knitting etc.) are no longer made in stainless steel, but instead are nickel-steel. These will not only rust, but also flake (the outer steel layer comes off) etc. So be sure to buy proper 18/8 stainless steel- if you can find them. they are generally more expensive, but worth the extra. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK Subject: [lace-chat] Caring for needles This is a general question about sewing needles but also tatting needles and keeping them in good condition. I recently went to use some sewing needles that have been stored in a little cloth carry case and they look rusty at the point where they stick through the cloth so not something I would use to sew with, particularly not lace. This particular case has been sitting in a cupboard in our caravan so may have got damp at some time so understandable I suppose. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Easiest for who?
Morning All Ok so, some people have suggested using a mirror to 'teach' left-handers how to knit/sew/crochet/tat etc If you look on the 'net' there are a veritable wealth of videos showing just exactly how to do all of these using either right or left hands Alex says that she taught herself how to tat and crochet right handed so that she can teach it and that if the person was left handed then she struggles When we're making lace do we think which hand to pick up the pin? which hand to use the pricker in? No!! Most people who are left handed adapt very readily to a right hand world... I taught myself to crochet, and tat why?? because I'm left handed! Over the years I've found that most left handers are very adept at 'swapping' around when they see how to do something shown by a right handed person. they have to be, after all they don't teach you separately in school to write because you're left handed do they?? Before you all write in and share your experiences of being made to sit on your left hand and use the 'wrong' one to write with we know about those... LOL. However, we can write, we can read, bake, sew on a button Please don't forget that we've been adapting for years with scissors, tin openers, doors (it annoys my family that the 'handle' on our lounge door is 'left handed' and they catch their knuckles when closing it VBG), we don't complain that much because we accept it! So, if someone really wants to 'learn' they will!! Oh, and, I knit northern english method, with the right hand needle under my arm, and wool in right hand, continentals don't have a problem with wool in left hand, so if someone struggles to learn one method, learn the other!! I crochet left handed, and tat left handed, pins are picked up with the left for bobbin lace, as is the pricker, scissors etc And yes, I use a fork in my left hand and a knife in my right! after all, you use the fork more than you do the knife do right handers struggle with that?? Re: [lace] Teaching children
Hi All Been watching this thread with interest. I am enhanced CRB checked and do hold a current certificate however here in the UK it would only cover me for being a School Crossing Patrol! If I wanted to go into school to 'teach' then I should be CRB checked for that... if I wanted to work with 'vulnerable adults' in other centres again another CRB check would have to be made. Trusteeship of a group registered with the Charities Commission would need another CRB clearance All of which must be paid for by an organisation, and the paperwork can take up to 6 months!! This situation is rather ludicrous, as each of the above checks would be made by the SAME County Council!!! Now where is the sense in that?? IMHO it's a great way of raising extra money! Also, if someone is 'retired' or self-employed, there is NO WAY that they can get their employer to pay for a CRB clearance doesn't enter into the scheme! In other words, whereas I could potentially go into the community to teach lace because I'm 'employed' , someone else who is retired couldn't, unless they could 'persuade' the relevant school or whatever, to pay £60 UKP EACH TIME!!! Separate ones for separate schools/centres etc this is probably why it just ain't gonna happen here in the UK!! There was a joy and eagerness within the group and others in the glass doing other crafts. As with all arts, crafts and lessons I think that a variety of people will respond but not all, so agree it wouldn't be right to push all to take it up. Many of you have had excellent responses from young boys as well as girls with the fishes and the snakes rather than the strips of lace but if they see a variety of types and have chance to try themselves, I think there might well be a good response. Anything else it teaches the children and we know there are lots of benefits to be gained would be really good. Sue T Dorset UK where we have been basking in fabulous sunshine now for days:-) At last Dear Clay, et al, That is not what was said. The point is that many women whose minds are mathematically, etc. inclined are drawn to lacemaking. That is, of course, not the only group drawn to the craft, but there seems to be a fairly large number of such math, etc. types who are drawn. There are, of course, other aspects of lacemaking which draw other people to the art, but that argument will not go nearly as far in promoting lacemaking in children, as there are so many other disciplines, areas, that do that. Music, the arts, painting, to name a few. But since those areas do not involve lace, I was emphasizing the mathematical connection. And note, I mentioned Torchon in particular. Flanders would be another mathematical lace. Binche went beyond that, and while it incorporates Flanders in some ways, it went on to other areas as well. lrb I am astonished that no one has challenged the notion that people with superior math/science/computer programming skills make the best lacemakers!! It may be that those who are making the claims happen to have those skills, but being able to execute a lace pattern is not the same as making it a thing of beauty, which separates the competent lacemaker from the extraordinary one. And it take an artist to design the lace in the first place. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Hello All Our group here in East Yorkshire have been demonstrating lace today and are back again tomorrow, at a Garden Centre in Dunswell, just outside of Hull. This morning we had a lady who was very interested, and we're keeping our fingers crossed that she takes it further... while she was chatting to Maureen, her son of around 14 was eyeing up the practice pillow after showing him what to do, we set him the challenge of finishing off the small piece of lace that was on there just a small 'fish' shape he finished it and was extremely proud to be able to take it home!!! Fw: [lace] Pattern drawing software
Just to add my bit to this conversation, I have the Easy Lace program which could be sold on to an interested buyer, as I no longer use it, but I have been using Lace 2000 which has been improved upon by 2 further updates which I love and use a lot. No axe to grind and just a user, someone who wanted to create some of her own patterns and have succeeded with this program. The other one was much more difficult but I did make up a few. Sue T The information is just a little bit out of date, I'm afraid.Lace RXP was replaced by Lace8 a year ago and Easy Lace went out of business about three years ago. As I've said to someone, Lace8 is the nearest thing to drawing patterns by handinstead of graph paper, pencil and eraser, substitute computer screen, mouse and delete button! But of course, with all the computer extras such as copy and paste etc. I don't want to be seen as "advertising" which is why I've stayed quiet on this discussion - and I should point out that I cannot supply anyone out of Australia or New Zealand with copies of the programme anyway, due to licencing restrictions. Fw: [lace] Re: Tatting Books
My addition to this subject is not to take away from any of the suggestions from tatters, people who tatt often or who teach tatting, but to people like me who have wanted to, or would like to learn to tatt from scratch but either not achieved it, or struggle. A dear friend suggested a book to me and I wondered if yet another book and dvd was worth the buying with my record over the last 30 odd years. I have loved the look of but never quite understood how to achieve it (until recently when I used a lacet chart and shuttle kit and got the click when showing my husband what he wasn't doing right, LOL.) We were both trying alongside the disc playing on the household television. I have achieved rings, a butterfly and a motif from needle tatting in the last year, but still wanted to learn shuttle tatting. Anyway yesterday I received the new book and disc and have played the first 3 lessons this morning and Eureka, I saw and completely understood the movements and the chant I wanted, ie when to go under over and when over under movements. It is called Learn to Tat by Janette Baker, with an interactive dvd. I know nothing more about her or it than what I have seen in 24 hours, but have seen the book on the Roseground website in the UK. Sue T Dorset UK I think I would suggest looking at Lyn Morton's books - her website is www.tatting.co.uk - also the small inexpensive books that Rosemarie Peel has produced over the years - http://www.lacet.co.uk Both are very helpful ladies, and Lyn also supplies threads and shuttles etc. Rosemarie's diagrams on her 'Learn Tatting with Lacet' leaflet (and in the new basic tatting book) are about the clearest I've seen. I would also suggest you join either the Ring of Tatters or The Lace Guild - both have libraries which include books that are now out of print, and this would also enable you to see what was available before purchasing. -- Jane Partridge - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] LED lighting
Before I went away on my recent trip I asked about LED lighting in relation to lacemaking with a view to possibly changing some of our lighting in our home and maybe for our trailer caravan. We went to a Motorhome show and rally and there i got graphic first hand knowledge of the difference it might make. We bought a couple of strip lights to replace the caravan ones and changed just one of them (something to do with the way the electrics worked, but the light from just this one lamp made a huge difference to the visual difference in the caravan. Amazing and for once I said WOW, :-) So I think some investment in those bulbs will happen in our household over the coming months. Fw: [lace] Ott LED mobile task light
I was interested about LED lights and bulbs to put into other lights and lamps to aid my lacemaking but can I ask what the Ott bit means please. I have sort of been able to follow this story but now have time to ask the question. Sue T Dorset UK Hello All! Having received some off-list electrical counseling, I need to clarify the issues with this light! This light does eat batteries--period. It's not suitable for fine work over time because my light was purchased in the morning & the batteries were dead by noon. The Ott company does not supply an AC adapter with the initial purchase, nor does it sell one as an after market accessory. The purchaser is on his/her own. As pointed out to me privately, an AC adapter must be "sized" correctly for the device, something I felt I had done when I purchased one at Radio Shack. Ott blames the premature failure of the light on the use of an incompatible AC adapter. The light weight, compact, flip up design is great. The light is pure. Unfortunately it's a very expensive flash light & "green" only to the extent that the entire device may be recycled at Waste Management. What should be a win-win is a big lose-lose for the consumer. It turns out there are a number of re! views & suggestions regarding this product on Amazon. When my fluorescent Ott light quit during the morning session of an EGA class, I didn't take time to read product reviews. I needed a light immediately & the EGA vendor had the LED model in stock. It turned out to be a costly mistake. I will follow up on the other LED lighting suggestions that have been offered before purchasing a replacement. There should be an answer here somewhere, but is Ott part of the solution or part of the problem? Re: [lace] Types of lace
I decided not to join in the bookmark exchange this year as I was very busy completing some lace I promised my sister over a year ago, now done and ready to post:-) Also I wanted to knit this one cardigan/jacket in peach which is about 2 thirds done now. Have made Torchon, Bucks, Beds, 1 piece of Russian lace but want to do more and 2 pieces of Milanese and again want to make more and two small samples of Flanders but have never seemed to have time to carry on learning that one. I have knitted since I was little and a friend and I learned to crochet in the 70s. I did a number of lacy shawls in the 70s cardigans and I once worked a very pretty lace babies dress in the very early 80's (just because I wanted to do it) which won a 2nd place in a local craft show before handing it over to my sister in law for her new baby daughter. I would like to learn to do tambour lace as I now have the right things to try it, I would like to try needle lace and I want to learn shuttle tatting to a point of competency to make little motifs, also improving on my needle tatting skills without having to struggle with every move but need more time to spend just trying and working at it which seems to escape me at the moment. Sue T Dorset UK At present I am making my bookmarks ready for the exchange but I am also making the 'map of the world' from the Eeva-Liisa Kortelahti book 'let's make bobbin lace'. I'm making it in black and intend to mount it on a piece of fabric which I will paint in a wash of blue with hints of browns/greens behind the land masses. It will hang alongside the two world maps I have already (one in blackwork embroidery and the other cross stitch). As for other laces I make or have tried; Torchon, Honiton, Bedfordshire (not keen), Bucks (I like), Russian tape lace (really enjoyed), a little Withof (must try more), Bruges flower Lace, Hairpin lace, Needlelace, Milanese, Miniature laces for my dolls houses and have dabbled with a little designing. I like to knit and crochet and am very pleased that I have at last mastered Tatting with the help of You-Tube and so at the moment spend a fair bit of time practising my tatting techniques especially trying to get uniform sized picots :-) Hoping for warmer signs of Spring soon Celia in SE London where it is cold and grey outside. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Nothing on the pillow!
Sadly Clay I am in the same position. I had one new pattern pricked ready to begin but feel its not quite right so am going to redraw it (asap) and as I dont know how many bobbins I will need I cant even prepare those. I was doing some knitting for me while travelling around to visit my Mother in hospital recently and although seriously ill (and my sisters didn't expect her to get to her birthday on Monday just gone) she seems to be fighting on, :-) While there she asked me to make her a cardigan like the one I was wearing so as I have promised I feel I need to get on with that but need to get this one off my needles first before my brain forgets what its doing. Working on asap so I can begin on hers.So I am trying to keep my mind focused on the knitting but will be happy to return to my pillow as soon as I can. Luckily the lace project can wait, if it must, and I have got on top of all the other lace projects I promised myself I would do apart from that one so far so must drive myself on with the knitting. I might have to pause and work a couple of small things for my own sanity Noelene but as Mum is now 89 and quite poorly I have to achieve that for her first. I am enjoying reading your mail as always. Sue T, Dorset UK, where at last we have a sunny but very chilly day, no snow here. Many people struggling in various areas due to some very freak weather, Huge snow drifts in the north and farmers loosing sheep and lambs underneath it all which is terrible. I can't believe this! I do not have a lace project in progress! I don't know what to do with myself! I just finished a piece of Milanese, designed by Louise Colgan. I'll post this to Flickr when I can photograph it. I have a workshop with Vera Cockuyt coming up soon, where I'm going to start a Vologda piece, and another workshop in May (Tonder), so it doesn't make a lot of sense to start something and then get caught up in two other projects. Re: [lace] Jean-Marie Leclair
This lady was born in about 1816 and married in the late 1830s I think. Her sister was also a lacemaker at that time and I am trying to remember if a couple of their daughters were lacemakers. They lived not too far away from honiton but of course because of Carol Mcfadgeons (sp) work and books we now know there was Devon Trolley lace as well as Hontion lace in that area. No idea what type they did would would love to know. When we went to the area looking for their information with just their names and date of birth we were new to the search but when i found the information I was over the moon to see lacemaker. This was 5 years after I began making lace and a real connection which this unknown lady who was a relative of my lace mother in law. I later bought the first two of Carols books but have yet to try working of the lace which i have promised myself I will. Sue T Dorset UK Dear all, Fascinating topic. I speak with no authority other than Alex Stillwell told me that a woman who was a lacemaker was in high demand as a wife because she could bring in extra money. We must remember that for the lower classes it was a hand to mouth existence, and so doing anything that brought money/food/shelter to the family could be the difference between success and the workhouse. Lace didn't pay well, but it paid, although probably agricultural work paid better for the time spent, so you don't list everything you do to make a living, but it doesn't mean you don't do it. 9 to 5 jobs didn't exist. Lace will wait, can be done in odd moments or bad weather, and the equipment doesn't take up a lot of space in a small cottage, nor is it a large investment in equipment. Men probably could find better paying work than lace in off times, but not necessarily, so it could be a good alternative. For women/mothers, they were more limited because they had to be at home with small children. Although I don't do a lot of needle lace I made a container for mine with a box that Badminton shuttlecocks come in from the sports shop. I cut it so it was 9" long, Padded it slightly and covered it with cotton cover, you need only tuck the ends inside as the cases come with metal ends that snap in so you can pop all the lace, threads etc into either end and snap shut then all is kept clean and tidy. Re: [lace] Help me find this book
Hi Jenny As both a bobbin lacemaker and tatter I can imagine what you thought re your group member wanting to learn this pattern however, as I own a number of Christines patterns can I just say that her instructions are VERY detailed and easy to follow!! She 'talks' you through every stage! Also, if you get stuck, I'm sure she wouldn't mind you emailing her!! Sorry I don't know what the book is but when you find out can you let the rest of us know please?? [lace] - Lurkers vs. Volunteers
When I have been struggling with something in lace the people on arachne have been wonderful, mostly. But not all of the answers come through the main group, occasional answers, or snippets of information have come through directly to me. Some from very prominent members of Arachne and other times from very quiet people who probably dont teach but have that vital piece of helpful advice which has been really appreciated. I think many others have been helped in a similar way and on occasion have been able to do our bit in helping someone else. Myself and another arachnid guided and helped find ways to describe how to work a certain pattern to a new lady attempting to make lace with no access to a teacher and working from books. To our amazement it worked and she continued to work for a couple of years until patchwork took her away from lace for now. So not all would be lurkers are actually taking only, many are giving where they can but very quietly in the background. Not everyone in life is able to pass on their knowledge or even continue with this wonderful craft all the time but reading the mail from the group is enjoyable mostly anyway. So to all the arachnids where ever you are I am proud to be of their number. Sue T Dorset UK where it is raining heavily and I am off to complete cooking dinner When there are probably less than 50 regular contributors to Arachne, and we know that there are another 1,000 or so who are lurking, does that matter to you? Do we have a lot of knowledgeable people out there who are takers, instead of sharers? And do they even care to realize how frustrating that is for some of us to contemplate? - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Straw Plaiters
I was born and brought up in Luton during the 50s and hat making was a fairly big industry at that time. My Mum did some piece work in some of my childhood years. We took my mum for a trip around the museum a couple of years ago, firstly on the ground floor to see the lace and then upstairs to see the straw hats and other interesting things. My brother in law was a big time Luton Town Football (The Hatters) supporter when he got married in the early 70's and was given a straw boater as a gift from the club. Sue T now in Dorset UK I think they made hats. At the Luton Museum, which I visited for lace purposes, there was an awful lot about straw plaiting and the hat industry. In fact, I got the feeling that people might move between lace making and straw plaiting depending on what was "hot". Devon In a message dated 3/13/2013 9:48:27 A.M. Can someone please tell me exactly what they produced? Some of these were as young as 5 and 7 years of age on the censuses!! I'm sure it wasn't all macrame hanging baskets!! Re: [lace] Straw Plaiters
Hallo David, don't know if it is the same thing, but my Gt Aunt Polly made what we called straw dollies which hung in the house and were made with the current years straw and replaced the previous years dollies which were then burnt, I think it was something to do with getting a good crop the next year, they were quite complicated things to make as I recall. Ian I, too, am saddened to hear of Erica's death. We had lost contact after your move from Christchurch.
