Subject: [LegacyUG] Showing Half Children

Hopefully, after months of not being able to get through to the list, I
might now be able to get an answer to this.

Before the last update, and I use Legacy Deluxe 6, I was able to show
children of more than one marriage with the father/mother's name in
brackets. I can't find how to do this now. Can anyone help with this?

Many thanks
Susan

Ed,

Thanks for your comments. We did, on July 17, publish an article to our
daily Legacy blog (see

about the current status as well as published the information in the Legacy
News section of Legacy Home. We should have published it to our website as
well, but overlooked it. We appreciate your support.

I, too, appreciate the effort to straighten out the LUG issues. Might I make
a suggestion for future reference?

In the event (heaven forbid) that this happens again, it might be a very
good idea, customer-relationswise, to put a noticeable message on the
website to the effect that there are currently mailing list problems,
and that they are being actively addressed.

I saw at least two messages since the list was reactivated today from
people who signed up during the outage and had no idea what was going
on. Most of us know that this is a very active list, but to them, it
must have looked like a black hole. Since Millennia must have had some
idea between July 5 and today that the problem was on your end, it would
have taken at most 5 minutes to place a notice on a web page.

I sent this suggestion to Sherry earlier today just before the list was
resurrected, but, by then, I guess it was unnecessary.

Ed Lawler

Ken McGinnis spoke thusly:
I made some changes this morning and it looks like some of you are
receiving mail again. Because of all the problems and not knowing
how to fix them we ordered a new mail server that will be setup early
next week. At this point I see some are getting email but I have no
way of knowing how many are not getting messages from us. This has
been very frustrating for us and I know all of you are tired of the
problems. Thank you all for your patience while we try to solve all
 the problems.

[LegacyUG] Pedigree Chart - Using Color for Emphasis

2006-07-24 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Question from Tom:

I recently extended the ancestry of one of my lines and want to give an
updated pedigree chart to my cousin. I want the updated information to stand
out - can I emphasize or colorize only the new people that I've added?

Answer: The deluxe version of Legacy makes this easy. Just follow these
steps. I've included an example of this chart below for your review. . . .

See Legacy News in Legacy Home for the complete article, or just visit

 Arnold,

The soon-to-be-released training video, Picturing your Legacy: a
Video Guide to Working with Digital Pictures in Legacy explains these
situations in detail. Basically there are 2 rules when digitizing
 pictures/documents:
 1) scan at a higher resolution, which it seems that you are and 2)
save as an archival-type image format. This would include .tif and
.bmp. I wouldn't suggest .gifs if you're wanting to retail all the
 image data.

The following training CDs will be available hopefully early next
 week:

 - Picturing your Legacy: a Video Guide to Working with Digital
 Pictures in Legacy
 - Creating and Sharing Perfect Reports
 - Insider's Guide to Legacy: Tips Tricks

As this may be off-topic, replies ought to be sent to me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]. If it's not off-topic and is of general
interest, reply here. I need advice from those with experience who
have scanned various vital records. I am mostly concerned with
documents which are photocopies, that is, those records that are black
text on white paper. I have been experimenting with .tif and .gif
 files. I have tried 300dpi and 600dpi. I have used Photo/Color,
Magazine/Color, and Newspaper/Black White. Sometimes it seems that
Photo/Color works best. Sometimes it seems that 600dpi works best.
My goal is to scan/copy into a graphic file what the original
document looks like with minimal loss in detail. Your experience will
 be most helpful.
The size of the resulting file is not a limiting consideration
anymore with large and fairly cheap hard drives.
 Thank you in advance,
Arnold

[LegacyUG] New method of receiving Legacy News and Notifications

2006-08-15 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
As you probably know, we publish news articles related to Legacy and
genealogy in general. The following article explains about 4 different
methods of reading these articles:
http://legacynews.typepad.com/legacy_news/2006/01/different_metho.html

In response to our users' requests, we have added another method by which to
receive notification of new articles. You can now subscribe (free) to the
Legacy News blog. By doing so, you will receive an email whenever new
articles are published.

Benefits - you wouldn't need to check the Legacy Home tab or your RSS
software to see if there are any new articles - they'll automatically be
emailed to you. You'll also be among the first to be notified of Legacy
updates or new products, such as the recent release of the new training
video set.

There are two methods to subscribe:

1) Click on this link: http://www.feedblitz.com/f/?Sub=78561

2) Visit our blog at http://www.legacynews.typepad.com and enter your email
address in the new subscribe box in the upper right.

  chart kinship
IF I understand this thread you're wanting to chart everybody in your
database in a descendant tree or chart.

As a convert from Brothers Keeper softwarehttp://bkwin.org/ I keep it updated to prepare
reports of this type GEDCOM-ing my Legacy database into it. BK has an
option to create a descendant report on any individual. Last time I tried
doing this I came out with a chart about 3' wide and 12' long. BK has the
ability to print on continuos feedpaper (if your printer will support
continuos feed paper). Otherwise you've got a LOT of pasting to do!!
Unfortunately, that's a drawback with ANY genealogy program I'm familiar
  with.

BKalso has an option to calculate and printthe RELATIONSHIP
on adescendant report of an individual of your choice to EVERY other
individual in the report. A very SIMPLIFIED and ABBREVIATED example:

  Levi Smith (great grandfather)
   Walter Smith
  (grandfather)

   Marlin Smith (father)

   Alan Smith (myself)

   Lisa Smith (daughter)

   Joe Smith (granddaughter)

   Marcy Smith (daughter)

   Moraine Smith (granddaughter)

   John Smith (grandson)
   Edgar Smith (great
uncle)
   Ruth Smith (great aunt)
   Levi Jr Smith (great
  uncle)
   Geneva Smith (great
aunt)

   Velma Smith (1st cousin once
  removed)

   Sarah Smith (2nd cousin)

   Tom Smith (2nd cousin once
  removed)

In the last hour or so of the Salt Lake Genealogical Conference a couple
years ago I had the chance to meet and discuss this BK feature with Geoff R at
the Legacy booth -drawinga chartsimilar to the above to
illustrate my point. While Legacy can calculate the relationship between
individuals I don't think there's any ability tocalculate, AND print,
anything like this BK option. Geoff seemed interested in thisfeature and
I hoped it might be something that would show up at some time in a Legacy
update. It may never have gotten any further than he and I discussing
it.

If that is the case I would like to formally request of Geoff, Sherry, or
other of the "movers and shakers" who decide these things that (I think) this
would be a tremendous assetadded to Legacy.

Unfortunately no. Cathy has suggested doing a chart from a

level ancestors. You can add a dummy person, and link all your top

chart. However, the only real solution is an all blood relatives

Keith:

I struggled for years trying various filing systems which did not work for
me. I finally decided upon the system outlined by Geoff Rasmussen on the
Legacy Site and am in the process of setting it up. With over 1000 MRINs in

my database (and growing) the prenumbered sets on the market would be a
costly option. I am using plain old cardstock and Avery index tabs with
computer printable inserts. The tabs are labeled 16221 S-101 1 clear.
There are 25 self-adhesive tabs to a package. I ordered 25 packages and the

cost was $44.75 - this would make the unit price $1.79. I cut them and the
inserts in half (there are now 1250 labels) and hand number them. You can
also print them on the computer. I was only able to find this specific
label on the Office Depot website, but there may be other sources in your
area. My process is obviously more labor-intensive and the end-product not
as professional looking as it would be with the prenumbered dividers, but it

works for me.

Hi Lloyd,

I said go via Gedcom as with direct Legacy transfer you can only
remove Private material.

You can't remove Research Notes, To Dos, only include Sources marked
for printing, suppress details for living people etc without going
the Gedcom route.

It would be great if we could have more options with a direct Legacy
transfer but currently we haven't that option.

Hope that clarifies

Hi Cathy and others,

If you want to keep everything in your transfer to a new Legacy
file, use the direct transfer. Do not go through the gedcom and
import, just export to a new Legacy file, then delete the Private
material. I just did that with a descendant narrative report for the
upcoming family reunion. Alternative, export the tagged persons to a
new Legacy file directly.

Hi Jane,

You can also include your Family File.

However you need to be aware that it includes the whole file. I
mean the whole file - not just the people tagged. I mean the Whole
File - there is no way of removing Private information or Research
Notes, Living Details etc. It simply copies the File as is.

Some people will find this a useful feature provided they make a
new Family File with only the elements they are happy to share. You
need to use Gedcom export to do this and then import into a new Legacy
File.

Be careful

I've been attempting to use the Legacy Research Guidance tool.

So I'm investigating Ancestor X1.

I've used Legacy Research Guidance to (Step 1) create a timeline for him and
(Step 2) Preliminary Survey-- linked databases-- then done a search on him
on the ,e.g., LDS FamilySearch site.

And that database has some files and I want to compare some of THEIR info
with the data I've already entered into Legacy.

But I can't find a way to view any of MY data (except for the timeline I've
created for the particular individual) OR to add any notes!?!

I tried to open Legacy a 2nd time so I could have the data file available
but was unable to do so.

Can anybody tell me how to do this?

Of course I could export all my info to Family TreeMaker and use that but
that's a nuisance and not very practical -- for example, if I want to take
notes on anything I find -- well I guess I'd just have to use an independent
Word processor to have the info readily available.

So -- is there a way to switch back and forth between Research Guidance
screens and my Legacy data??

Or is it possible to open Legacy a 2nd time -- does that make sense?

Thanks as ever,

Pat

Subject: [LegacyUG] problem with sourcing

I have Legacy 6.0.0.110.
This is complicated.
I am trying to find out how to get the source to post to the right field
without using the source clipboard.

To be specific--

(Let's say I am entering a bunch of info for a bunch of different people who
are already in my database. Most of the new info is from a single source, a
good genealogy book, which I have on put on the clipboard. NO PROBLEM
THERE.)

So I'm getting ready to enter info for Jane Doe, who is already in my
database from an old gedcome import, and the only info I have is her name.
The only info in the genie book is marriage info.

I want to enter her dob, which I'm picking up from a census that is already
in my Master Source list.

I do not anticipate that I will use this Census source again in the near
future, so I don't want to bother putting it on my source clipboard.

So to put in the birthdate, I go to Jane Doe's edit screen, and put my
cursor in the Born field and then click the source icon (the three books).

That takes me to the Assigned Sources screen, but it highlights the
Unspecified Events line which cites my gedcom import. I do have the option
of moving to the Name field (for which I have a different citation), but the
Assigned Sources screen offers no option for entering a source for a Born
or Birth field!??

So when I select the Census source and add it, it is added to the citations
for the Unspecified Events field or to the citations for the Name field.
THAT'S IT! !!??

OR -- I can put the Census on the Source clipboard. Then when I'm on the
Edit screen and put my cursor in the Birth field and then click on the mark
at the left to post that source to that particular event (Born) and then
check it out on the Assigned Sources screen, I see that the program has
added a Birth Event and put in the Census source.

SO-MY FIRST QUESTION is -- How can I get Legacy to add the Birth field into
the Assigned Sources so that I can add a source without going thru the
Clipboard routine??

ALSO, What REALLY scares me is this -- I began using Legacy MONTHS ago and
din't use the source clipboard for sometime. In the meantime I assumed the
sources I was citing were going in the fields I was clicking on.

But now I don't know!! Is this a NEW bug? Or has Legacy behaved this way
all along?? And what on earth can I do to be sure the facts and sources are
correctly matched?? It will take me weeks on end to go back and verify
everything.

RE: [LegacyUG] Entering source details

2006-10-12 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Before my airplane takes off, let me share a few thoughts

First, to respond to how to record a census. I do add census information to
an event, although a census is more of a source. However, because that
census event has been entered, it will appear on the chronology showing me a
date and a place where a person lived. If I called the event Residence
instead, that would probably work okay too, but, because it has the term of
census, I can easily see in the person's chronology if I have identified
him in the census or not. Not true with the residence event.

I also personally enter the transcription of the census in more than one
place: in the census event's notes and in the detail text of the source.
While this may seem like I'm duplicating my efforts, the value of this comes
when, in the future, I want to print a report that includes transcriptions
as part of the source detail. If I had only entered this information in the
event's notes, I would have to reenter it into the source. And vice-versa.
So by copying/pasting the information in more than one place, I have the
flexibility I need in the future.

The video on sources, the data in the sample file, and the source examples
at the tips site provide information to 1) help you standardize the data
entry of sources and 2) provide ideas for flexibility. Yes, we are actively
engaged in improving the ease of working with sources. As a professional
researcher myself, I need to be able to enter information quickly but also
have flexibility and standardization. We (Millennia) are committed to
achieving this.

The purpose for which I published the templates at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/tipsSourceSamples.asp was to help us attain
consistency. I've seen the same source entered as:

- 1850 Pennsylvania census
- Census - Pennsylvania 1850
- Pennsylvania 1850 census
- ... and so on

Subject: [LegacyUG] Entering source details

I personally (maybe it is me) find entering source details confusing and
prone to error and inconsistency.

For instance in entering census data for an individual there seems to be 2
places where one might inadvertently enter the details of what is on the
census sheet.
a) in the event notes
b) in the detail text of the assigned source.

Obviously the latter would be preferred (I think).

The confusion (for me) arises because, before applying a source, one needs
to enter an event to assign that source to and only then does the source
detail field become available. While entering the event, it is therefore
tempting to enter the details in the Notes section, especially if the event
is labeled Census. Because of this I've sometimes entered the census text
details in one and sometimes in the other - which will obviously create
problems with the reports.

It might be useful (SUGGESTION) for Legacy to somehow 'remind' the user by
either better guiding the user through the available field labels (and
better flow of data entry). Actually as has been mentioned in an earlier
thread, the entire sources module in Legacy badly needs to be reworked to
guide the user better as many other software programs do. At present, the
user has to work within a book source data fields and the entire system is
awkward and prone top inconsistency.

Now, I have to find the census details I entered in (a) and those I entered
in (b) so I can make them consistent and that is going to be a problem! Any

advice appreciated.

Jeff
P.S. If Legacy permitted the user to modify the titles of some of the
fields, the user could add his/her own reminders to avoid such problems till

Legacy changes things.

I have only begun to explore the Research Guidance tool and find that I am
thrilled with it. However, I do have a question I hope someone can answer.
On checking a married couple in my file, I find that the Suggested Sources
for the wife include the appropriate census to check. However, when I check
the husband, the no census is listed under the Suggested Sources.

I want to use the Research Guidance to keep track of which census years I
have checked and which I still need to do. This is easily done by checking
Done. But since, in the instance cited, the husband's sources list no
suggested census, I don't have a way to track for him.

My questions are why doesn't any census show up on the husband's list and is
there a way I can add them. Many thanks to anyone who can give me some
guidance.

Mary

The 5 training CDs of volume 1 were redone for version 6. Much of the

Volume 2 was released last month. It contains 3 new CDs. Free previews and

I was wondering if there were suggestions on how to handle potential
relatives within Legacy. By this I mean individuals who might be related
but for which there has not yet been a connection made. Entering them just
as unlinked individuals would cause them to be lost within the database. I
suppose tagging would be a useful way to track them, as would entering them
in a separate database file, but how do others handle this in Legacy?

Over the years of collecting genealogy data, I have
discovered that I have lines that stretch back into
antiquity ... as in before year 1000 AD. Most of this
has come from the FamilySearch genealogy data, and
really isn't verified.

I have come to the conclusion that 99% of the
genealogical information before AD 1500 is pure
speculation, so I need to purge my database of most
of mine.

I am finding whole branches of dubious info, and
having backed up the total database and created one
that is purged to work on, I need to know if there is
a way to delete a whole line, as in choosing a
patriarch born about 1500 and then deleting all of
the related ancestors to both parents.

[LegacyUG] New Genealogy Software (Legacy Family Tree) for Danish Researchers

2006-11-09 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Millennia Corporation Releases New Genealogy Software for Danish Researchers

Surprise, Arizona, November 9, 2006 – Millennia Corporation, a leader in
family history software, today announced the release of the Danish language
edition of Legacy Family Tree.

The software, used by beginners and professionals to record, plan, and share
their family trees, is now the premier choice for Danish researchers.

“Until now, the choice for many [Danish] genealogists has been Brother’s
Keeper or Family Tree Maker,” wrote Lars J. Helbo in Alt om DATA (Everything
about Data magazine). “The first has a rich set of functions and a perfect
localization, but the user interface is not up to date. The latter has a
modern user interface, but lacks a number of vital functions. If that was
the dilemma, Legacy has the solution. Legacy simply combines Brother’s
Keeper’s and Family Tree Maker’s strengths without their weaknesses.”

Key Features
- user interface, reports, help files – all in Danish
- Danish census forms from 1769-1950
- Timelines of Danish history
- checklist of suggested sources for Danish research
- same excellent features as the regular edition including over 100 reports,
To Do List, calendars, expert tips/advice, statistics, web site searches,
and much more...

Pricing and Availability
Legacy Family Tree 6.0 - Danish Edition, is now available at
http://www.legacydansk.com for US $29.95.

Other Languages
Legacy is also currently available in the following languages: English
(Australia), English (Canada), English (United Kingdom), and English (USA).

Translation is in progress for the following languages: Afrikaans, Deutsch
(German), Eesti (Estonian), Español (Spanish), Français (French), Italiano
(Italian), Nederlands (Dutch), Norsk - Bokmål (Norwegian), Norsk - Nynorsk
(Norwegian), Português (Brasil), Suomi (Finnish), and Svenska (Swedish).

More information about the translations is available at

I'm a little confused by this release. I was under the impression that the
Danish already had access to Legacy (translated) but maybe I was wrong.
However I know that work is underway for a UK version of Legacy. How will
these versions differ to the current Legacy and how will it be
marketed/priced.

I guess what I'm getting at is:

A: What will be the differences in local versions
B: Will these just be a switchable option for deluxe users
C: Will deluxe users be able to switch to a local version free of charge

While I applaud raising Legacy's profile in countries such as the UK, I
don't think current UK deluxe users should be penalised for getting on board
early and supporting Millenia. I hope that's not the case.

Thanks to everyone for your input on Family Atlas. I'm glad that it works
with Legacy's gedcoms. I figured I would have to create custom gedcom files
to hone in on exactly what I wanted to see and not have the map cluttered
with non-related lines. It would be nice if the programmers could work it
out to allow the user to choose the ancestors/events/locations more easily.
Also, I take it that the program would not recognize old US division or
district numbers that were found on the old census listings (i.e. Division
27, Decatur County, Georgia, USA)? I don't want to do a bunch of editing in
Legacy just to make the map work.

I found this article on Dick Eastman's BLOG which lists a few features and
sort of compares it to Map my Family Tree:
http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/10/family_atlas_ge.html#
more.
(Make sure you copy this entire link for it to work.) This product costs
$29.95. Reviews seemed to be more favorable for this product than the one
below. I get the impression it works best with US locations.

In addition, Dick also did a review of Map my Family Tree here:
http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/09/map_my_family_t.html
This product costs $39.95. Dick seemed to like it!

It still sound like these products could both use a little more tweaking,
but I'm very interested in them still.

Thanks for all the input and if I learn more, I'll post it here.

imports a Legacy database directly but if you have a large database,
it will result in a very cluttered map. The good news is you can zoom
in very closely and get more detail. The biggest con I've found is
that regardless of which facts or events you have chosen for it ot
plot, it will plot everything. To make it useful, I created a gedcom
of direct ancestors exporting only birth, death and marriage facts.
That worked very well. You can also pick subject people (ancestors,
for example) in Family Atlas but when you plot, there will be a LOT of
unwanted facts also plotted. This behavior has been reported to the
developer. Overall, if you think through your project, it is an
 effective tool.

RE: [LegacyUG] GenSmarts vs. Legacy Research Guidance

2006-12-05 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Jennifer,

I'll chime in with a few thoughts.

While the two have similar objectives, they are quite different.

Firstly, GenSmarts primarily only focuses on online sources. While this is a
good first step, must research must still be done offline. Where GenSmarts
provides a long list of items, the order in which they should be searched
does not follow the research cycle. In other words, Legacy first suggests
that you look at preliminary survey type sources - or, sources that are
published online, in print, or elsewhere. These should be searched before
original research is undertaken.

Legacy's RG also is broken down by goal. So you pick your goal (to find the
birth, death, marriage, parents, etc.), then the sources will appear,
prioritized, to help you achieve that particular goal. All sources have
tips, links, and/or repository information.

Just a few thoughts

Thanks,

to normal text as it expanded under a picture. Fixed.

Book Reports - Fixed some page numbering problems when output is set to RTF.

Book Reports - Fixed some situations where a person with no surname who had
a
middle initial with a trailing period, was getting two consecutive periods
at
the end of a sentence. ie: Tom married Sarah A.. Fixed.

Event Window - The Add Another event button was not working correctly.
Fixed.

Events - When adding a new event, clicking the Sources button would
sometimes
show the event list without the new event. Fixed.

FGR - Sometimes some event sentence text would be duplicated when it wrapped

around a picture and had multiple carriage returns within the text beside
the
picture. Fixed.

GEDCOM Export - Marriage User ID is now included in GEDCOM export when there
is
no other marriage information entered.

Gedcom Import - We now import the Gedcom tag _UID into Legacy's
IntelliShare
number.

Name List - Default Cursor Position should always be set to one of the
Search
boxes when the form is first loaded.

PAF 5.x Import - We now import the PAF's tag _UID into Legacy's
IntelliShare
number.

Picture Center - Fixed a problem where the current description information
was
not being saved and refreshed properly when browsing to a new picture
folder.

Publishing Center - Changing the target person for an Individual report
chapter
was going through the report menu instead of going directly to the Record
Selection screen. Fixed.

Publishing Center - Moving a Family Group Record chapter in the list would
change the starting name. Fixed.

Relationships - The last build caused a problem where Half relationships
were
not showing correctly after doing a Set Relationships. Fixed.

Sources - The Print option on the Source Entry screen now honors the text
formatting.

Timelines - Fixed a description problem for Elizabeth II in the Rulers of
England timeline.

View Menu - In the View menu the hot key for both Timelines and Tree Finder
was
a T. Change Tree Finder to an R hot key.

Web Pages - If an individual has multiple parents, the parents names were
blank
in the Family Links box on Pedigree style web pages. Fixed.

Web Pages - Standard Edition was including links to private individuals even
if
the option was not checked. Fixed.

2006-12-06 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Arnold,

Legacy will automatically check for new news articles and new builds every
six hours I believe. If Legacy is open at the time a new one is made
available, you might experience what you suggested. Otherwise, the next time
you open Legacy, it will be refreshed. Or, you could click on the Options
button on the Home tab, and select 'check the Internet now'.

Geoff,
I had to close out Legacy and restart it in order to see that the new
version is available. I do not recall having to do that in the past. Before
closing out Legacy, I (1) clicked on the icon with two green
arrows and (2) clicked on Legacy Home, Family, Legacy Home, etc. Arnold

Geoff,
Thank you for mentioning the Legacy Home/Options/Check the

I had assumed that clicking on the Refresh icon (the one

I'm in the process of reviewing my entire Legacy database of individuals
looking for missing information.

I want to create a list of ONLY the male individuals of my surname indicated
as having a spouse but no marriage information.

I THOUGHT this would be a simply query using the Detailed SEARCH feature.
However, I find that SPOUSE is not an option in the numerous fields in
WHERE TO LOOK. Only thing I came up with was a list of EVERYBODY who's
married!

Anybody have any ideas as to how, or if, I can fish these males out of the
pond?

Subject: [LegacyUG] How do you personally put in information that you think

My father and I have been working on one of our Ancestors for 40 years now
(he is our brick wall.)

I recently discovered that one of the sources we had used for some
information probably does not pertain to this ancestor after all. My father
had found our ancestor living in a Mental Assylum in the Canadian 1881
Census, under the name of McCasline (our name is McCaslin...). From that
information and further research, we had an exact death date and place (from
the assylum), a calculated birthdate (a few years off our other calculated
birthdate), and some other information. The rest of the family had not been
found on the census.

I have since discovered that ancestor AND most of the Family living in the
same county as they did in 1871 - but under McCastin (the t didn't match
the l in Soundex, but of course looks very similar!) The information
matches the information from the other census's.

So either the McCasline was the wrong person - or he was sometimes at the
assylum, and sometimes at home - and got counted twice. (so obviously I
need to do more research)

So now the question.
I do have what I've found commented in the notes.
I don't want to just remove the information from the files but I don't
want to get confused either, thinking I have the definate information when
it is now put under a great amount of doubt. And even if I do disprove
the information, I don't want to just remove it either, as others might make
the same mistake?

So - how do you put disproved or doubtful information (that others might
find and think is right) into Legacy in such a way that it is totally clear
it is disproved or doubtful?

I do realize there isn't 1 right way - but I'd like to hear what people
would suggest!

Thanks!

Is there a way to change the default priority of items added to the To-Do
list through Research Guidance? I noticed that everything gets added with a
priority of High and I don't necessarily want that. I know I can change each

one individually, but would prefer to change the default if possible. Thank

Hi all,

I am new user wondering about how people save family files.

Do you have one file have everyone - husband wife (starting couple)with
families all in one file

or... do you break the files save by surname. Example my Husband parents
surnames are Clifton, VanDyke(dads side), Unruh Hopkins (mom's side)So
would you save a file for each one build the family from there.

Doing it the second way, you wouldn't have a complete picture of all of the
family (then how do you create a web site with everyone).

I don't want to over complicate this, but also want to have a good complete
file, if you share how you save your family groups I would appriciate...
Thanks in advance!

Cheryl

Out of curiousity, how do people deal with conflicting evidence and
decisions about it in Legacy? For example, what do you do if you have a
death certificate and a census record that give conflicting birth years
and you have to make a decision as to which one is the more likely one.

What I do is use the 'Research' tab of the notes to record the
conflicting evidence and my decision process and then exclude the
research tab from any reports. Does anyone else have a technique that
they use?

Dave

Yes, Legacy allows you to work in an environment such as this. When the

ability to handle multiple users

Hi Listers,

I'm looking to buy a genealogy program that is relatively easy to use
but powerful at the same time. I've read many good reviews on Legacy
and had a question that I didn't see answered in the FAQ.

My data is currently in TMG. My wife does not want to deal with its
learning curve, so I'm looking for something easier.

The problem is that we both do genealogy and we both need to be able to
work on the database using two computers at the same time. Does Legacy
support a home network setup that allows multiple users to edit the
database?

If Legacy can't do this, what are my options that will allow us both to
edit our data simultaneously using Legacy?

Thanks for any input on this issue!

Dennis

RE: [LegacyUG] exporting made more people??

2007-03-14 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Dee,

In the past, I remember Ken McGinnis mentioning that sometimes these counts
will be off because of something to do with the Access database upon which
the Legacy family file is built. Doing a File Maintenance will correct the
differing counts, but there aren't any problems with extra people, or people
getting left out. It's just the count that sometimes needs to be corrected
using either File Maintenance or exporting to a new family file. Hope that
helps some

Okay, I compared the lists. Here are all the steps. I started with a file
called Gagliardi line. In the name list, it says it has 253 people. I
exported it to a Legacy File on my own computer. I told it choose all
records, export private people, keep the original ID #'s, formate names nad
palces, export general To Do's, exclude LDS info. I told it Don't Assign a
Source. The new file is called Export Gagliardi. Its Name List says it has
255 people in it. BUT, when I compare them, they have exactly the same
RIN's. Now there's a mystery! Why does it say there are two more in the
new file?? It would really be good to understand this.

I tried it again, not excluding LDS info or private info, etc., and got the
same results -- always two extra people supposedly in the file. I counted
and compared twice, with the files side by side, on a split screen, going
down one by one. I was pretty careful, though I can't say I'm perfect.

The reason for the export is to go on to export another file into it and
make a combined file. But I want to be sure I have the complete info and no
extras. Help (small whimper)??

Dee

Sherry, I tried that, however, I just did it again,-and it still doesn't
work. I've uninstalled legacy, then reinstalled legacy after deleting most
of the files in the directory. I still have the same problems in the
research center. Also, while viewing from the family page, when I try to do
a direct Internet search from the tools menu (search the Internet for
current person) and it brings up the list of available search engines. I
choose ancestry.com then click on the search button, below is the address
URL that it takes me to which does not establish a connection to ancestry.

http://service.bfast.com/bfast/click?siteid=22846411bfpage=search_box_3bfm

I know that I can change the setting in the customize function,-which I
have and it works fine when I do. What I don't understand is how I can get
to the changes that need to be made in the research center so that I can
make sure that they have the proper URL in them.

It appears as though something has changed some of these URLs, -I don't know
what, or how, but I have ran the latest virus scan and spyware software
trying to locate whatever created the problem. I do not believe that this
is a problem that originated in Legacy. I believe at some point in time,
something has either corrupted the files in this program and reinstalling is
not helping. Everything else on my computer including the rest of Legacy
works fine. I am hoping that if I can get to where the addresses are stored
for activating the various websites within the research center then, perhaps
I can fix it. I can fix the ones in the (search the Internet for current
person close) via working with the URLs and figuring out how to put the
correct ones in.

Once again, if you are the technicians could tell me how to get to the URLs
in the research center so that I might change them, then I believe that I
may be able to fix this.

Thanks for helping
John

With Legacy closed, go to the Legacy folder on your hard drive. Delete the
iSearch folder and the iSearch.usr file. Then when you go back into Legacy,
the default search strings will be recreated.

There are a lot of them in Legacy and they're all really long!

I really don't know why the answers we've given you in the past aren't

Geoff/Staff - is my request to have the relationship designation to a
starting person (me most likely) be able to print in reports/charts still in

line for a possible addition to Legacy? It's the one problem I have because
it takes me such a long time to put the relationship designation into each
person I'm related to as an Event. I think it adds so much to a report to
see how each person is related to me.

Just wondering -

RE: [LegacyUG] Creating CD's to share with relatives using Passage Express

2007-04-06 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Ron,

Because of the way Legacy is developed, Legacy itself cannot be run, or a
file cannot be viewed from a CD, which is why the user would have to open
the file in Legacy on their computer. However, I've had some thoughts on how
to get around this in the past few days, and will bring it up to the
programmers in our meeting today.

Otherwise, it is a simple, free method of distributing information. Even if
you just wanted to create a backup of your Legacy file, pictures, etc.,
which has a nice menu system, it is a good solution.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Creating CD's to share with relatives using Passage
Express

For quite a few years I have been using Legacy to create web pages that
I convert into autorun CD's which can be viewed by anyone with a
computer that has a browser. So, I was quite excited to see Legacy is
now providing free software to create CD's.

After a lengthy download over my dial-up connection (my grandkids say I
am so 20th century), I started using the new software. My initial
excitement soon turned into disappointment. The interface was great and
it worked well on the computer I used to create the CD. But, when I
tried to use it on my laptop which has Legacy installed I found I needed
to transfer the file and open it in Legacy in order to view it. Next, I
tested the CD on a computer that doesn't have Legacy and learned I would
have to download Legacy in order to view anything but the pictures and
links to my website.

Am I missing something? Most of my relatives don't want Legacy
installed on their computers unless they are actively doing genealogy
research, so the CD is useless to them. If they already have Legacy, I
can simply send them the appropriate .fdb file. If they want Legacy, I
can save them the download by sending the setup exe along with the fdb.
There are many programs which allow me to produce CD's with images,
sounds, etc. What advantage is there in using this new software. Does
the paid version offer enough additional features to justify the cost?
I honestly can't envision buying it without having a trial period to
test it, particularly after my disappointment with the free version.

I hope those of you using this new software can let me know what I am
overlooking that makes it worth using.

Ron W.

I recall a version of Legacy that showed any 3 tags in FAMILY VIEW - and
whether a person was tagged or not.  I think the tags were either blue or
red.  This was often handy - so see quickly whether a family member was
tagged.  Is there a way to make that happen again?  I have looked and found
only a way to show it on NAME LIST - I would like it back on Family View.

Ideas?

Hi Geoff,
I recently purchased and downloaded the new GenSmarts but
cannot find hide nor hair of my receipt (which I normally
keep.). Is there any way to check online and see if I received
the discount? Maybe that would be a nice addition to the web
site - to have a My Account. Then we could see what we have and
have not purchased and the prices paid for the software.

Thanks,

RE: [LegacyUG] Non-standard locations

2007-07-11 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Alice,

Thanks so much for your response. I hadn't read George's article. I, too,
agree with this position. Not understanding the historical jurisdiction of
the event causes so many researchers to look in the wrong place.

Fortunately, for the U.S., there are two great tools to assist in locating
the correct jurisdiction for the time period:

- AniMap - watch a preview at
http://www.millenniacorp.com/_videos/animap/animap.html
- Legacy's U.S. County Verifier, accessed from the Tools menu

I sure wish there was an AniMap for the rest of the world

Marcellyn,

George G. Morgan, an internationally recognized author, speaker and
authority on genealogy, recently had this to say about recording locations:

Record Precise Information: For each of your ancestors' vital dates (birth,
marriage, and death), always record the precise location as it existed at
the time of the event. That means listing the town, the county or parish,
and the state for U.S. events. For foreign locations, the town, province,
and county should be recorded. More important, because boundaries and
jurisdictions change so much over time, make certain you have the correct
county or state or province or country listed as it existed when the event
occurred. This is important to you for purposes of locating copies of
records and important for future researchers who want to confirm your
research and obtain copies for themselves. ---Tips from the Pros: Record
Precise Locations as They Were from George G. Morgan, 24-7 Family History
Circle Blog, 5/25/07.

I don't think he was exactly referring to the time period you are working
with, but you get the idea. If you decide to follow George G. Morgan's
advice, it might be a good idea to record somewhere within Legacy the
approximate location according to today's maps. -- Alice

[LegacyUG] New General Release Build - 28 Jul 2007 - ver 6.0.0.155

2007-08-06 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
** Deluxe Edition Users - Use the Download Now link on the Legacy Home
tab. **

** Standard Edition Users - Download the update from our web site at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp **

WHAT'S NEW

IGI Search - Added a new BEPSC column which will show up for LDS users.

Timelines - Added a French Government timeline. Contributed by Claude
Georges.

CHANGED

Screen Size - For first time users the default screen size was quite small
for people with larger monitors. We now open Legacy to fill most of the
screen.

Standard Edition - We have added a comment to the Descendant view about it
being a Deluxe Edition only feature. It was totally blank and people
thought it wasn't working.

Timelines - Updated the Canada Prime Ministers timeline.

FIXED

Ancestry - Fixed several broken links to Ancestry's web site.

Internet Searches - Updated several of the Internet Searches.

Legacy Import/Export - When importing a Legacy file into a new file the Not
Married setting was not being set.

Master Location List - Fixed a problem where Importing locations from
another family file's Master Location List. This was rare and hard to
reproduce as it only happened on a few people's files.

Master Location List - Fixed a problem where the Geo Database could
accidentally cause the blank location record to contain a value. This blank
record is reserved for Legacy to use for everyone who doesn't have a
location.

Relationships - In Descendant view if a person is unknown an incorrect
relationship was being displayed. Fixed.

Renumber Rins - Fixed an error 75 that some users on Windows Vista would get
when renumbering RINs.

Timelines - Checking for BC dates was getting an error for a year of 25 BC.
Fixed.

Timelines - Checking for BC dates was incorrectly swapping the from date and
two date. Fixed.

Vista - Fixed a problem writing to the temp folder.

 Well said, Denise.

Elizabeth Shown Mills' new book, is available as a pdf download, for $29.
I
have the book on my shelf already, but immediately downloaded it when I
heard it was available in that form. It makes it really easy to enter a
search term (land entry or whatever) and go directly to the section of
the
book that is applicable. It can be found at
 http://www.footnote.com/evidenceexplained.php (and other
places, probably). Very handy to have it right in my laptop.

I have focused for the past two or three months on cleaning up my sources,
and putting them in publishable form. I have converted from being a
lumper
 to being a splitter. I had been guilty in the past of taking shortcuts;
for instance, sourcing a book, and omitting the fact that I viewed it at
an
 online source.

I started by working my way back from my parents, taking one direct
ancestor
at a time, and printing their chronology, with sourcing, to pdf. As I
review
each source, I go to the original document or digital file and source it
properly. I frequently reprint the chronology and sources to pdf until I
am
satisfied that they look exactly as I want them to, and they conform to
the
Elizabeth Shown Mills standard. Then I move on to the next direct
ancestor.

It is an enormous undertaking, even though my database contains fewer than
4,000 individuals. But satisfying to see the results.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy v7 - Sources based on _Evidence_ by Mills

2007-08-27 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Without giving away too much, the v7 will allow you to continue with the
existing sources, or use the new templates. Like Gail mentioned, they will
offer the additional flexibility that v6 currently does not have. You will
have the ability to create your own templates, adjust the existing ones,
etc. Personally, I can't wait to have them fully operational. For years we
have had to wonder exactly what goes where to attain the desired output. In
v7, you won't have to wonder.

I sort of think that some might be missing part of my point. I made
not have made it very clear in my earlier note and if so, I apologize.
I'm actually asking for much *more* flexibility with source citation
than we currently have. Right now, the output order, format, etc. is
totally set and you cannot change it to suit your needs. The author
goes in one spot, the title in another, and the publication facts in
their own. There can be no blending of master source fields with
citation detail fields in the output from v6. I'm asking for and
hoping for much more flexibility in v7 to create whatever output order
I want (Mills style or not).

Although Geoff's interview highlighted the templates as a way to take
out the guesswork with sources and make them standardized, I do
believe the new source templates (and ability to create one's own
custom template) will give this much-needed flexibility, yet not force
everyone to start with a blank piece of paper if they don't want to.

I do respect everyone's desire to do sources their own way and don't
want to push one method over another.

 Gail,

Whilst have no feeling one way or the other about Legacy accomodating a
format compatible with Mills's latest output, I would hope that it will
maintain the flexibility that has characterised the program.

One of the strengths of Legacy is the way in which it can be used to suit
different countries, cultures and individual ways of working and in my
opinion it would be most regrettable if this is sacrificed on the altar of
standardisation. In particular I have no wish whatsoever to have to redo
all

my web pages because of a change in the format of sources, or anything
else
 for that matter.

Hi user group and Legacy staff, I listened to Geoff's interview with
Dear Myrt and carefully read Renee Zamora's blog entries about the v7
Sneak Peek. All the information on sources and bibliography creation
 sound very promising!

I know that _Evidence Explained_ just came out this month, but I truly
hope that the powers that be will make sure the v7 source template
incorporates as much of this second book as possible. There is so
much more information here and the source components are carefully
described and laid out. Mills' first book certainly still stands on
its own merit, but the new book expands to many other types of sources
and does justice to all the online resources people use more often
 these days.

Renees' post said that there will be bibliography output capability
and I really look forward to this. The formatting is different
between a footnote and a bibliography. While v6 will provide a master
source list, it does not put the components in bibliography format,
which has periods instead of commas and does not include the citation
 detail.

RE: [LegacyUG] A question for Geoff

2007-08-29 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Hi Tish,

I just print the one alphabetical list, and include the MRINs and RINs on
it. Using it, it is very easy to locate the correct family. Remember the
rule is that if you can find anything in about 15 seconds, then the system's
working for you. That's what I found with this system.

The Pedigree index will be printed if, in the index options for the pedigree
chart, you select to include the index.

I did send for and received the material to begin to file by mrin.  I think
it is a wonderful way to do it.  However - when I printed off the Index
report, with all the mrin's and rin's, there is  67 pages - do I just put
them behind the folder called Pedigree folder?  Then do I print off aother
list with it being alphabetically listed?

The index report is great!  I didn't know it existed, but it shows the
spouse and children, if any, and their rin's., and all mrins.

I do not know how to print off the pedigree list - so does the index list do
just as good?    I am not computer stupid, but some things are not obvious.

Hi, now that you are probably in our Beautiful BC waters heading North, I
don't know if you get e-mail.

I have a huge request. Could - would you please make a CD of the MRIN
filing system, begining with the printing of the Descendants Charts, right
through putting data into the filing system?

It would be a treasure, and one that we could study to our heart's content.
What a help it would be, and I do thank you in advance. Looking forward to
reading how to order.

I have ordered and isntalled GENViewer and it seems like a good program but
I am concerned that the instructions state that it works with Legacy 3 -6 .
Does that mean that it won't work with Legacy 7?
