Delete it and try to get the full download. A partial download will
not work. By the way, the size of 30mb is a very old message. I have
suggested that Millennia update it. Version 7.5.0.278 download is
about 47.5mb. The download still works for 7.5 as I have done it

release would be posted when all the Legacy Family Tree issues with

 Hi Marie,

choose to download v7.5 from there if that is what you want.

Legacy v8 installs itself in a different place to past versions. This
makes it very easy to install it and have a look around while still
using v7 (or earlier) for your main data file maintenance, if you want
 to do that.

As I said in another post just yesterday, be aware that v8 will want to
convert any older data file to its format, so make sure you use a copy
of your data file for this purpose, or use the sample data file provided

Re: [LegacyUG] LEGACY 8

2014-03-11 Thread Wendy Howard
All programs have 'unresolved issues'. :-)

It is entirely your choice whether you download Legacy v8 and start
looking around now, or wait for a later date to do so. If you're
undecided about spending money on an upgrade, use it in the free
Standard mode for a while before making up your mind.

As has already been said several times now (most recently earlier
today), Legacy v8 installs itself in a different location to previous
versions, so it is possible to have both v8 and whatever you're using
now (v7 in your case) running at the same time. Just don't try to open
the same file in both programs - make a copy to open in v8 so you can
still open the original in the older version.

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Also with respect to the manual, I agree that a PDF corrections update

First of all, an 'upgrade' implies a replacement of what you've already got.
Because it can be installed alongside Legacy 7.5, Legacy 8 should be regarded as
a separate product.

So, I would download the standard version for now and get to grips with it using
copies of your own data. Then, when you're satisfied that it's stable enough for
your use, purchase the upgrade and unleash the premium features. I would still
not make Legacy 8 my main program until I was happy that the premium feature
were at least as effective as their 7.5 counterparts. Only then would I move
across to using Legacy 8 full time, but I'd still keep 7.5 around in case of
problems.

If you've only got the .PART file, then the download has failed or is in
progress. Where is Firefox putting downloaded files when it's finished? Where is
Firefox putting the download whilst it's in progress?

If all you see is the .PART file, don't be impatient. Wait for it to finish.
Even with a super-fast DSL line, downloading 48683kb is going to take more than

Millennia could adopt a slightly more user-friendly policy.

a) Issue hardcopy at time of initial release and when a reprint is indicated
b) Issue PDF copy at initial release and at each major e.g. 8.1 release
c) Issue an Errata file (RTF or DOC or...) and include in each version.

This last could be installed along with the program and accessed from the Help

the Family file listed with bolded names. I have been all through option 3.8 in
the customization to no avail. I set Use + at the end of name to indicate
spouses and continued lines. the other 3.8 options are unchecked, which can
cause bolding. However, some of the names in the Children lists still come out
bolded, with no seeming rhyme or reason as to why they do.

I have wiped out version 8 and reinstalled , to no avail. I have tried
resetting options to Legacy default, to no avail. I do not believe this was
occurring before build 412. Any ideas? Thanks. Chuck.

The event sentence in the Family Group Report is displaying the wrong person. I
ran Check/Repair, checked the event sentence definition, restarted Legacy 8
(latest release), to no avail. The problem persists, and nothing seems to
correct it.

First problem: My Citizenship event definition reads as follows [FirstHeShe]
was automatically granted [Desc] [onDate] [inPlace].[Notes] [Sources] which
should read as “John was automatically granted United States Citizenship at the
moment of his birth on 9 May 1949 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.” Instead
of displaying this way, the [FirstHeShe] placeholder picks up his mother’s
name, instead of his.

Second problem: While checking the event sentence definitions I also noticed
that all of the [sources] and [notes] were missing from the event sentence
definitions even though the sources and notes displayed correctly in the
Report. Is there a setting that I have missed?

Any assistance in resolving these two issues would be greatly appreciated,

[LegacyUG] Master sources

2014-03-11 Thread Graham Love
Hi - a simple question but one which confounds me at the moment. I have to
create numerous new sources which are similar (Single county parish
registers where only the name of the parish is different but the origin of
the source is different). Is it possible to copy a master source? Then I
could just change the name and origin.

Yes, I do it all the time but you need to be VERY careful when you do this.
Bring up the source you want to use but alter. Click Edit over on the right
side. Make the changes you need. Now click Save. Make sure that you select
2. APPLY THE CHANGES TO A NEW COPY OF THIS MASTER SOURCE.

You don't want to accidentally pick the first option or you will overwrite the
one you already have and then you will have a mess.

Make sure that you don't forget to change the NAME of the source too.

I have also sent in a bug report, however, I have not heard anything further.

RE: [LegacyUG] Question - Cemetery or Tombstone as the source?

2014-03-11 Thread Graham Love
Slightly tongue in cheek but my favourite quote at the moment is from Geoff -
'What have you got in your hand?'. The answer in this case is a photograph so
that should be the source and the source detail self evident. Cemetery burial
records would be another source. Just a thought.

Pat,
Your email address should have nothing to do with downloading updates. You
do not even need to provide an email address to download updates. If you
are getting an invalid email address notice when trying to log into the
Family Tree Webinars site, that means that the email address you are trying
to log in with is not the same email address you originally registered with.

change ONLY the name of the Source and save it. Then, if I've saved it
correctly as a new Source, I open it and carry on with the edits and
save it again. If I have accidentally overwritten the one I was

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy failing to recognize my email address

2014-03-11 Thread Ron Bernier
Pat,
Do you have a Family Tree Webinars subscription? Most of the webinars are
only available for a brief period (I believe 7 days or less) after they
have been presented. Registering for a webinar does not mean that you can
watch the webinar anytime you desire unless you do have a subscription. By
the same token, if you do not have a subscription, then you cannot use your
email to log into the Family Tree Webinars site. You will only be able yo
view the webinars that are currently free for viewing.

RE: [LegacyUG] Question - Cemetery or Tombstone as the source?

2014-03-11 Thread Michele/Support
Here is how I do it. I record the source using this template….

Cemetery Records Grave Markers, Plaques, Tombstones, Monumental Inscriptions
Grave Markers, Rural (most of mine are rural)

Here is how my citation looks:

Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery (Lamar County, Mississippi), Eliza J.
Barefoot marker, personally read, 2001.

I then attach the photograph of the marker to the cemetery event.

Pat,
If you do not have a Webinars subscription, then you do not need to log in.
Click on the tab that says Archived Webinars Any webinar that is
available for viewing will be listed. If the webinar you are looking for
is not listed, that means that it is no longer available.

Correction to my last email - it looks like all webinars are listed under

If a webinar viewing period has expired, you will be able to view a

RE: [LegacyUG] Question - Cemetery or Tombstone as the source?

2014-03-11 Thread Poppke Genealogy
Graham,

Thank you. I considered this approach.

My concern is;

If I take a couple of photos of a monument, say to get a closer shot of each
spouse, do I end up having a bunch of sources, say Pic01.jpg, Pic02.jpg, and
Pic03.jpg? Are individual photos my sources, or is the collection of photos
gathered together from one cemetery trip and stored together (digitally) my
source?

If I went this route, I would cite my source as a photo album of tombstone
photos and have a photo album for each cemetery. That is how I store them now.

My hierarchy on my storage drive is Country - State - County - City - Cemetery
Name - Date

I believe that photos are just a method of transcription. They can limit some
types of errors.

Thanks,

Ted

Yes, I do it all the time but you need to be VERY careful when you do this.
Bring up the source you want to use but alter. Click Edit over on the right
side. Make the changes you need. Now click Save. Make sure that you
select 2. APPLY THE CHANGES TO A NEW COPY OF THIS MASTER SOURCE.

You don't want to accidentally pick the first option or you will overwrite
the one you already have and then you will have a mess.

Make sure that you don't forget to change the NAME of the source too.

Hi - a simple question but one which confounds me at the moment. I have to
create numerous new sources which are similar (Single county parish
registers where only the name of the parish is different but the origin of

Here is how I do it.  I record the source using this template….

Cemetery Records Grave Markers, Plaques, Tombstones, Monumental Inscriptions
Grave Markers, Rural (most of mine are rural)

Here is how my citation looks:

Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery (Lamar County, Mississippi), Eliza J.
Barefoot marker, personally read, 2001.

I then attach the photograph of the marker to the cemetery event.

I use the Cemetery recordsCompiled records: database online template for those
like at rootsweb and if they are for those from find a grave then I use the
InternetWebsite, generic with a new source for each contributor to that
Cemeteries find a grave memorials. So I may have several find a grave sources
for a cemetery but different contributors and each contributors memorials would
be the citation.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy failing to recognize my email address

2014-03-11 Thread Ron Ferguson
Pat, Thank you.

Initially may I make it clear that I do not know why you are hitting the
download problems. I can, therefore, only suggest what I would do under your
circumstances, rather than give a proven resolution for the problem.

I would start by forgetting about updating and consider a complete reinstall.
To this end I would uninstall v. 8.0.0.358. I have thought quite a bit about
this, as I realise that it is the only working version of v 8.0 which you have.
Nevertheless, I think it would be advisable. It will not affect your data etc.
which is now stored in your documents.

Then download the full version of the current version (v 8.0.0.414) from the
web. It will ask for your email address (any will do) and do let it download
until complete – keep an eye on the progress, and if it stops leave it until it
restarts. Then install.

Please let us know the outcome.

If you use the ID Number field in Legacy, have you tried a search for duplicate
ID numbers?

Go to; My Toolbar, Merge, Find Duplicates, Special Duplicates Search, Find
duplicates using only User ID number, Continue.

I ran the search for duplicate ID numbers and found 57, 416 duplicate ID
numbers per the Legacy version 8 software. I have ran it in the past with
previous versions of Legacy and did not find many. When I go to the Name List,
I only have 66,194 people in my database!

I do have duplicate ID numbers starting with B, because I imported data long
ago for Ingalls listed in Burleigh's 1903 book on the Ingalls.
The researcher who added the data to her genealogy program added ID numbers
starting with B for Burleigh to indicate the number came from his book. The
book was published in 1903, so many of the individuals she added to her data
are descendants of some one in his book. She handled that by using the number
for the last ancestor listed in Burleigh plus a dash number indicating the
number of generations an individual is removed from B1. So, there can be many
descendants with the same ID number such as B1222-10.

I did a search for ID numbers starting with B and found 3,948 People with ID
Numbers starting with B. Not all of them are duplicates!

I did a fairly extensive audit of all my ID numbers and found very few
identical ID Numbers, except for the Burleigh numbers. Looks to me like there
is a software problem.

When the icon is half-coloured it indicates that you have added media to

Sometimes, on Vista or later versions of Windows, downloaded files are marked as
being a security risk. The Properties page for a downloaded file has extra

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplicate ID Numbers Software Problem?

2014-03-11 Thread Brian/Support
I applied the RINs preceded by RIN- to my database of about 5,000. I
had used the ID field years ago when inputting data on my maternal
grandparents descendants from a report created by a cousin at a family
reunion so there were some manual IDs in the file as well, it was a
spreadsheet and I used the line number for each person as their ID
number. A duplicate ID field search found 296 duplicates. The first
dozen I checked were all valid duplicate ID numbers because the
spreadsheet had both husbands and wives on the same line number.

data long ago for Ingalls listed in Burleigh's 1903 book on the Ingalls.
The researcher who added the data to her genealogy program added ID
numbers starting with B for Burleigh to indicate the number came from
his book. The book was published in 1903, so many of the individuals she
added to her data are descendants of some one in his book. She handled
that by using the number for the last ancestor listed in Burleigh plus a
dash number indicating the number of generations an individual is
removed from B1. So, there can be many descendants with the same ID
 number such as B1222-10.

I did a search for ID numbers starting with B and found 3,948 People
with ID Numbers starting with B. Not all of them are duplicates!

I did a fairly extensive audit of all my ID numbers and found very few
identical ID Numbers, except for the Burleigh numbers. Looks to me like
 there is a software problem.

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplicate ID Numbers Software Problem?

2014-03-11 Thread Brian/Support
The 220 set count include MRINs where the ID was set as well as the 160
individual RINS. The Sample database has 60 marriages and 160 people for
a total of 220.

The cleared count looks like it is not clearing those 60 Marriage IDs
that were set. That is a problem I have input to our reporting system.

RE: [LegacyUG] Source Citation; multiple sources on clipboard

2014-03-11 Thread Pam Gosling
Thanks Cathy and Jenny; I get it now. . I somehow missed those 2 points, the
right click on the source/save, and the copy to source clipboard at the bottom
left. That helps immensely to be able to copy an assigned source to re-use for
a specific family. I was using the prompt for detail, I understood that part,
just was using the wrong save button and thus was losing my typing entries,
and not the copy button at the bottom!
I appreciate your time to help Sincerely, Pam

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Source Citation; multiple sources on clipboard

Hi Pam,

I haven't seen the presentation but I think you misunderstood unless there is a
change coming that Geoff has and beta testers don't have.

You can avoid having all the sources added if you have prompt for detail
checked - but once you cancel that's it - the rest of the sources on the
multiple source clipboard are not attached.

Try it out on the Sample database or some other test database.

I think the multiple source clipboard is an abomination and I wouldn't use it
for anything - in fact I can't think of a case in my own research when it could
be useful.

So I use the single source clipboard constantly.

How do I change back to another source without retyping?

If I know I'll want to use it again soon, or it is a source I often use, I SAVE
it and then LOAD it to the clipboard when I want to use it again.
10 sources can be saved in this way.

If I didn't realise I'd want it again and so haven't saved it, then I find the
person where I used it and go to their Assigned Sources page.
Highlight it and then use the Copy to Source Clipboard button on the bottom
left of that screen.
If you haven't got Prompt for Detail always checked, you will need to then
click the triangle of the Source Clipboard if you need to make any changes to
the Source Detail or change the Recorded Date.

However, it's worth updating. The cautious wait a few days after the release of
a build. If there's any real problem, it will be followed within a day or two
with another build.

Have fun,
Cathy

Hello,

I saw Geoff’s great presentation on Sources on Friday great Geoff by
the way!

Anyway, it looked like, from his demo, now? Â we can pick and choose
which of the 5 sources on the clipboard we want to “source”,
instead of them ALL being pasted at once. . is this new since the
lastest build(s)? Or did I misunderstand him?

What he showed (e.g. select one source from list),  doesn’t work for
me, ( I am using the build from March 9, is that build 367? (not
listing correctly in my download but that is another issue). It still
pastes all sources to whatever event or person is applicable where I am
working.

So did I misunderstand his demo . .or I’m not doing it right?  I
know they’ve been working on this issue, but hadn’t read about any
changes. . .if this is not true, how do people handle having to go back
to another previous source WITHOUT pasting/copy/retyping multiple lines
of information?). I know I could make a SEPARATE new master source for
everything, (I do it for census items,  it’s not that hard to redo
w/ cut/paste w/ census information) Â but for individual family
sources, Â I was trying to combine sources that are similar and easily
copy specific data(e.g. a specific case or ID #, multiple line items)
relevant to that particular family or situation, instead of adding
thousands of similar master sources, just to prevent having to do a
search and find and retype of the same source again later, when I
already have it detailed for another family member.  (not sure if
I’m explaining myself very well. . feel free to ask for a better
explanation)   I also  tried double clicking  on the previous
(duplicate) source, Â for example, for that previous family member in
the  individual assigned source detail line, brings up the source, but
that doesn’t save to the clipboard(would that be an easier change
from a programming standpoint than changing the multiple source
function on the clipboard?)

Or, how do other people do this differently? I can figure out my own
workarounds if there isn’t a better way, but wondered if I’m
missing something. Or, maybe, if this is as shown in the seminar, I
just need the newest build?

Thanks for any help, from a sometimes tech challenged Pam

[LegacyUG] Recording changes of residence

2014-03-11 Thread Roger Lamprey
I'm trying to get some ideas for recording changes of residence for an
individual. Similarly, though not the same, how might we record
knowledge that a person lived at address A in year Y?

In Legacy's Master Event Definition List are some possible event names
(Land, Property, Immigration, Emigration), though I don't quite like any
of them for reflecting either a change of residence within a country or
that we know the person lived at address A in a given year. The Census
event would seem fine for indicating the latter based on a census, but
that is too specific and is rather arbitrary just to handle knowledge of
a person's location based just on a census source.

I added a Residence event to the list, but I am not particularly happy
about that as it doesn't address a move.

Any good ideas for handling this? Am I missing something?

Roger Lamprey

Initially may I make it clear that I do not know why you are hitting the
download problems. I can, therefore, only suggest what I would do under
your circumstances, rather than give a proven resolution for the problem.

I would start by forgetting about updating and consider a complete
reinstall. To this end I would uninstall v. 8.0.0.358. I have thought quite
a bit about this, as I realise that it is the only working version of v 8.0
which you have. Nevertheless, I think it would be advisable. It will not
affect your data etc. which is now stored in your documents.

Then download the full version of the current version (v 8.0.0.414) from
the web. It will ask for your email address (any will do) and do let it
download until complete - keep an eye on the progress, and if it stops
leave it until it restarts. Then install.

Please let us know the outcome.

[LegacyUG] A simple place-name question

2014-03-11 Thread Roger Lamprey
When recording the place of an event, we should record it as it was at
the time of the event, rather than as it would be referred to today.

In that case, how should we refer to the American Colonies as a group
for events taking place before the United States became a nation (maybe
just American Colonies?). And, at what date did the crossover from
that name to United States take place?

Thanks!

2014-03-11 Thread Leon Chapman
Roger:

I enter a Residence Event for each residence. You can include the date
the full address as part of the Event or in the Notes of the event. When a
person moves to another location, I add a new Residence Event with the new
date and new address. This becomes part of the individual's chronology or
life store as to where that person lived. This information also allows you
to Map Family that shows a nice graphic of where the person has lived and
events have taken place.

An example using Census information as the source would look like the
following:
1900 Jun 20Residence:USA, IA, Wapello Co, Columbia.
1910 Jul 1Residence:USA, KS, Cowley Co, Pleasant Valley.
1920 Jan 2Residence:USA, OK, Kay Co, Vernon.

Enjoy!

[LegacyUG] Website Creation: Event Notes Privacy Brackets

2014-03-11 Thread Bryan Pratt
I’ve just amended the Event notes for a particular event for my website,
because of a complaint about privacy issues.

It’s a Military Service event with date and place filled.

I’ve amended the Notes with double brackets around the offending lines, but
when I create the web pages the whole event disappears. I can do that with
making the whole event “Private”.

But I only wish to take out the so-called disputed statement and keep the title
of the event and one sentence in the Notes.

Any thoughts?

Thank you

Bryan

Re: [LegacyUG] problem with Legacy 8, build 412 and up

2014-03-11 Thread Ron Taylor
A bolded name means it is on the Preferred Direct Line (when the last box in
OptionsCustomize3.8 is checked).  Look at the P column in Edit Children to
see the + and * indicators that can appear left of a name (not to be
confused with + on the right side of a name).  Help filesSearchSiblings
List explains What are those characters? which can also be reached with the
Help button on the Edit Children window.

Unchecking that option will un-bold the preferred direct line names.
Apparently, the preferred direct line is stored somewhere in the database
because if you again check the box, the names are bolded again without having
to run ToolsSet Direct Line.  I just tried both ways and the current release
seems to function as expected.  What is not functioning yet is the bolding in
Descendant tab.  Also, the preferred direct line is not bolded in the
Spouse/Child or Siblings Lists in Pedigree tab but they do have the left side
+.  I believe that the preferred direct line names should only be bolded on
all screens when the option is checked and they should have the left side +
when the option is unchecked.  Another check box is probably needed in 3.8 so
that one box would be similar to what it is now Bold direct-line children
names in lists and a box Show plus sign left of direct-line children names in
lists.  Then the user could select none,
bold, +, or both.  The important thing is that the notation would be
consistent across all displays.

I believe that since I updated to build 412 I have started seeing Children in
the Family file listed with bolded names.

Any ideas? Thanks. Chuck.

Re: [LegacyUG] A simple place-name question

2014-03-11 Thread Ron Taylor
By your reasoning (and apparently most traditional genealogists), what would be
the location description for the place we call Boston, Massachusetts today if
the event happened in 1690?  or for New Orleans, Louisiana in 1802? or for
Jacksonville, Florida in 1720?

After working for many years with master code databases, I am very familiar
with the ability to have a current code/location easily converted to how it may
have been designated in some other time frame or language.  A good example is
how AniMap works.  In the university files, it is necessary to have codes that
represent various things.  The code 26782 might be interpreted as Intermediate
Math from 1965 thru 1973 and then the same code meant German Literature from
1974 to 1992.  By combining the code with the date the computer can easily and
quickly report the correct interpretation.  The same logic is done regularly
with locations.  It is much easier and usually more accurate to specify the
current location than to try to determine the right designation for a long past
time frame.  I believe that computer programming will evolve that will resolve
this genealogical school of thought difference in much the same way that it is
used in industry
 and education.

When recording the place of an event, we should record it as it was at the time

In that case, how should we refer to the American Colonies as a
group for events taking place before the United States became a
nation (maybe just American Colonies?). And, at what date did the
crossover from that name to United States take place?

Thanks!
