And I have found my grandfather enumerated as a child living with his
parents in New York City and enumerated with his fellow students at a boarding
school in northern Connecticut. Boy he moved fast. I realize that the likely
happening is that his parents named him when they should not have.

Very good point as I have found it both ways. A person living on April 1st but
not reported on the census as they had died in between as well as well as a
person not born yet who was reported on the census. Keeps us on our
toes!

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Census event vs

You are confusing the date of the census with the date the enumerator
finally made it to that household. For example, the 1930 and 1940 US Census each
contain the statement at the top of the form, "Name of each person whose usual
place of residence on April 1, 1940 (or 1930), was in this household." It may
not have been until June when the enumerator got around to a specific household
but the data on the form was supposed to be valid as of April 1. If a family
member died on April 2 or later, and the enumerator made his rounds later in
June, then that person's name would still be listed on the census.

The actual
date that the census was taken by the enumerator which is hand-written in on
each census page is of little value because it can sometime appear to show
invalid information as you suggested in the case of a person that had died. If
you pay attention to the official date of the census which is preprinted on each
page, then your dead person was indeed alive and present on that date, was
listed with the family, and was certainly an event for him.

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Census event vs

I don't see it as a real event because if a person listed on the
census was dead at the time the census was taken (and is listed with the family)
then how could it be an event for that person? My great grandfather was said to
be lying in a casket in the parlor when the census taker arrived. It could have
been an event for him, but I wouldn't say he was actively involved in it.

The
other thing about the census is we don't know if the entire family was there at
the time. Not being witness to it we can't say for certain it was an event for
each family member. The head of household could have been the only one filling
out the information which is why there are always discrepancies.

Years ago I
used to list the census as an event, but found it was just duplication because I
also used it as a source. I still find some of them in my data that were never
deleted.

Anne:

You have seen the responses about stopping the potential problem for
individuals. But I would also have a reburial event for those that are
affected. As far as the frozen ground, do you mean that graves had not been
pre-dug (see Northern Exposure episode where the mayor is estimating the number
of graves needed and the doctor, Joel, refuses to give his thoughts as to who
might die.)?

Subject: [LegacyUG] Potential Problems

I've been stewing about what to do about this issue for some time. I
have
several people with potential burial problems and the problems stem
from the
following circumstances:

1. Burial took place within a few days of death;
person was disinterred
and reburied in a new location; i.e. from a family
burial ground to a
new cemetery. I have quite a few people this happened to.
They lived in
the Lexington, Kentucky area.

2. Cremation took place but
ashes weren't interred for quite some time
afterwards (several instances of
this.)

3. Due to weather, person was not interred immediately. Most of
these
were due to people not being buried right away because ground was
frozen.

I don't want to turn off the potential problem alert, because it
helps
in correcting errors. Not sure what would happen if I add an
additional
burial event; make a custom re-burial event or used alternate burial
event.

Ideas?

You may find it easier to do the sorting in the Picture Centre (Tools - Picture
Centre)
Switch to the Attached Pics Tab and not the Order arrows
Used in connection with the Attached Pictures list to the left of the tab -
the bottom box, this may or may not be less frustrating than dragging and
dropping multiple times.

Drag and Drop should work to move the pictu re into any visible spot on
 the
screen. Since the screen only displays a max of 3x3 pictures (the
 slider in the
lower right controls how many per row) you may be limited
 to moving the last
picture a couple of times from row 4 to row 1 with an
 intermediate stop on row
2 since row 2 will be the top row when row 4 is
 displayed.

Kristen,
I teach Legacy classes all the time. What I teach depends a bit on
the audience. I have to take into consideration their level of computer
knowledge in general, their knowledge of genealogy database programs in general,
their knowledge of Legacy specifically and what level of genealogists they are.
Class size also matters. I try to make it user driven as much as possible
showing them how to do things that they specifically want to know. I do have
some specific topics that I like to speak on, my favorite being cleaning up your
file (standardization). I also do a lot with using Legacy with FamilySearch.
Absolute beginner classes are great too because they are usually amazed ☺

We
do have some materials for leaders of local user groups. These have not been
updated since version 4.0 but they should still give you some ideas.
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Presentation.asp

I also teach people
one-on-one for anyone in the Columbia County Genealogical Society and the
Augusta Genealogical Society (Georgia). All they have to do is call me and I
will arrange to meet them at the Euchee Creek Library. I try to coordinate it
with the monthly meeting of the CCGS (which happens to be today). They all know
that I will stay after the meeting and help as well. I always have my laptop
and the library has a nice projector. I suggest you start with some one-on-one
because they will help you learn what sorts of things people are most interested
in.

As far as having a set curriculum... I use PowerPoint for my general
genealogy presentations but I never do this when I am doing a Legacy class. I
just crank Legacy up and have it on the screen as I talk. I encourage the class
participants to have their laptops with them. They retain more if they are
actually working in the program. I usually have a list of things I want to
cover for that particular class but that's all the written notes I have. Since
I know the program very well I don't need written notes other than a simple list
of topics.

A couple of minor thoughts
1) Use a neutral color scheme on
your Legacy program so that the colors aren't distracting. If you are using a
projector you will want to test the look out on the screen before you do the
class.
2) If you use your real data file it is a good idea to bookmark specific
people in your file that you can get to fast. You don't want to display living
people in your file as you are navigating (your other option is to have a test
file set up, I use both).
3) If your talk is on a specific topic and you have
specific examples in your file to illustrate it, again, have these people
bookmarked so that you don't spend a lot of time making people dizzy as you
navigate through your file.
4) Keep the presentation to no longer than an hour.
Any longer than that they will probably go into information overload, especially
if you are working with beginners. Better to break it into two sessions if you
need to.

Welcome to Legacy. If you click on the Options tab at the top, then click

Follow the instructions after that and all should be good. If I am not

Re: [LegacyUG] First Birth After Marriage

2015-02-12 Thread Howlanddavisii

To all who wrote:

Thanks for your comments. But I understand why there is a potential
problem and I understand, and have, excluded problems where I have checked. My
concern, and comment. is why my grand aunt has the symbol but her parents do
not when, if you would look for an additional child, my grand aunt's name would
not be involved. Her parents' names would be; to me, that is what one would be
looking for. You are looking for the birth of a child by the parents, not by a
subsequent son/daughter.

Howland Davis

P.S. Nan, my given name is Howland, not Howard G, no problem. For three
years, when I worked for Goodyear Tire, the company computer system changed
Howland to Holland because I, obviously, did not know what I was typing. I
finally found the right IT individual who changed the system so it would just
underline Howland in red but not change it. And motels frequently take my
reservation and then put it under Howland so that I am told that they have no
reservation for Davis.

Howard, the red exclamation mark shows what Legacy sees as a possible error
and one that says birth date too late after marriage just indicates that in
usual circumstances, there would be births between the marriage date and that
childs birth date. Mostly the first birth occurs within the first 2 - 3 years,
so with the large gap, there is a strong possibility that there are births you
haven't found or still births that may not even be recorded.

It isn't saying your Great Aunt is the problem, just that before her birth
there could be births you have missed. I found this out as I also had this
message and I also know there are definitely no births beforehand in mine like
you.

There is a way to turn off this exclamation mark for just this one incident I
think. Someone with a better knowledge of how Legacy 8 works will tell you.

[LegacyUG] First Birth After Marriage

2015-02-11 Thread Howlanddavisii

I am using Legacy 8, download 8.0.0.454 (I know, I should update).
I have a grand aunt who has a red exclamation symbol. When I click for the
details, it says 'Birth of first child tool ate after after marriage date.'
She had no children and it is marked as such. Her parents married seven years
before her birth. So to whom is the potential problem referring? If you are
looking for a preceding sibling, shouldn't the parents have the red exclamation
symbol not their child; the child was not involved with the birth of any prior
child?

OK, that may be Legacy's definition but why is it a potential problem for

It is referring to her and the fact that, I assume she was the first

[LegacyUG] Showing Half Children

2014-09-23 Thread Howlanddavisii

LUGgers:

I am doing something wrong but I cannot figure out what. I have added two
additional wives to a collateral ancestor. He had two children by his first
wife and his third wife had three children by her first marriage. If I have
the father and his first wife, only their two children show. When the father
and his second wife show in the Family View, only his two children by the first
wife show as 1/2 children. When the father and his third wife show in the
Family view, all five children show as 1/2 children. Why don't all five
children show with each wife with the 1/2 as needed?
I am using LFT v8.0.0.427; would going to .439 help, do I need to do
something else or do I need to do both?
 Thanks in advance.

You are not doing anything wrong, 1/2 children show only when they are
linked to one of the two people who are spouses in the current family view.

Only 2 children show with the first wife because they are the only
children linked to that couple (children of wives 2 and 3 are not 1/2
kids here).
When the second wife is selected only the two children linked to him
show (from this I assume he and the second wife had no children together
and she has no children from another marriage). They show as 1/2 kids
because the second wife is not their parent.
The 5 children show with the third spouse because three children are
linked to the third spouse and two are linked to him.

That is right, once they are linked to him you can set the parent child
relationship to reflect the state of that link, adopted, step etc. so
reports can include that relationship where that is allowed.

[LegacyUG] Missing Media Files

2014-04-23 Thread Howlanddavisii

I recently printed a list of missing media files and corrected them.
However apparently for five of them I must have given different file names
because I still get a list showing those five. Is there a way to tell Legacy
8.0 Family Tree that those old file names are no longer good and should be
deleted so the Missing Media list shows no files missing?
I have version 8.0.0.352 and it says that that is the latest build.

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Media Files

2014-04-23 Thread Howlanddavisii

Jenny:

Instead of letting Legacy look for the missing files navigate to each
one yourself and when Legacy says something like original file was xxx,
do you want to use this one which is yyy? you tell it you do. Legacy
will then stop looking for the original filename and recognize the new
filename.

That is what I expected to happen and did happen on the other twenty
missing files when I started the media file check yesterday. I clicked on the
correct picture but it showed the picture as a new picture with no caption,
date, description or file ID so I filled in the information and continued with
the other five files of interest. The rest of the files were fixed as you
said. So I now get those six as still missing but they are not.

I try to word everything so that it makes sense both now and at any pointin the
future (e.g., 10 years from now). The word ‘present’ would be
completelyambiguous. I would try to get the event to read nicely while leaving
the enddate out. You might have to use the notes field instead of the date
field. Innotes, you can say things like ‘she started in 1980 and was still in
thatposition as of Apr 2014’.

Legacy 8.0 has a new Gather my Media Tool that will gather all the
media linked to your file into one common folder (the default media
folder). That tool will be perfect for you to find media wherever it is
stored and copy it to the media folder.

Go To Tools Gather Media to start the process. It can also create a
list of the media it copied. Note that it copies the files it does not
move them so the originals will remain where they were.

Howland:

The best write up on this is in the Help file within Legacy.
1. Click on Help, Show Help Index
2. Click on Search Tab to perform searches
3. Enter Custom Internet Search Strings hit return
4. You will get 4 topics, double click the 1st one - Create Custom Internet
Search

Legacy's help file should be enough detail for you to understand the search
strings.

You can go to your favorite genealogy site and so a manual search using their
data entry. This will create the search string you will need to Legacy's data
fields for the first name, last name, birth, etc.

Then create you own search strings.

I have a fairly comprehensive list of search strings.
You can go to my DropBox folder and download the Word Document at:

Re: [LegacyUG] Two questions

2013-08-28 Thread Howlanddavisii

Cheryl:

1. Oldtown, Allegany County, Maryland is the location I've
given for an 1787 event. When I attempted to insert the
Geo-location data, the program correctly complains that
Allegany county wasn't formed until 1789. So, I then select
when I know to be the name of the county from which Allegany
was created; Geo-locator can't find Oldtown.

Surely I'm doing /something/ wrong, but what? And yes that
IS how Maryland spells Allegany.

Using Animap, I find that in 1748, Oldtown was in Frederick County. In
1776, it was in Washington County. And in 1789 it was in Allegany County. The
latitude given was 39.541 and the longitude was 78.611.
I hope that helps. And you were right; my spell check does not like that
spelling of Allegany. of course it does not like my first name either!

I'll try to explain a bit better but using one of my own blended
 families as an example

Under Tools Set Direct Line as Preferred .. when I set myself as
the root person for that, then I have my Dad my Mum correctly
 showing for my Dad's marriage.

However, if I was to use a child of one of my half-siblings from my
dad's first marriage, and set them as the root person for the Tools
Set Direct Line as Preferred... then when I look at my father's Family
view, it shows his first wife, not his preferred wife, because it is
showing the direct line of the designated person.

 Hope that makes sense.

If you navigate from a 1/2 child to you, you should see that child’s motheras
your wife. Otherwise you should see the preferred wife.

To mark a wife as preferred, you need to do more than just selecting her inthe
‘wives of...’ window. You need to click on the ‘Set to Preferred’ button atthe
bottom left of the window. Make sure there is an asterisk next to her in the‘P’
column.

Hi Howland,
I'll try to explain a bit better but using one of my own blended families as an
example

Under Tools Set Direct Line as Preferred .. when I set myself as the root
person for that, then I have my Dad my Mum correctly showing for my Dad's
marriage.

However, if I was to use a child of one of my half-siblings from my dad's first
marriage, and set them as the root person for the Tools Set Direct Line as
Preferred... then when I look at my father's Family view, it shows his first
wife, not his preferred wife, because it is showing the direct line of the
designated person.

Hope that makes sense.

I curate the database(s) for three fairly large families
beginning in the US in the early 1700s. That's 14 or 15
generations. The numbering can get ugly.

You might want to GOOGLE Richard Pence + numbering It's a
fun read, if nothing else.

Bottom line is, though, most numbering systems are static
not dynamic.

For one project I use a generation number, a G, and a
sequential number. It isn't perfect but then again it works
for me.

CE,

Legacy has always had a 'sort date' field.

It is hidden from view but derived from the data in the date field you see and
can edit.

The following is an old copy (ver 6) of DATES, I doubt anything has changed;

--
   'Format of StoreDate
'pbddmmddmm
'p = prefix
'If the Len(StoreDate) 1
'   :=bad date, 0=normal,1=abt, 2=cir, 3=bef, 4=aft, 5=bet, 6=bc,
7=ad, 8=WFT Est
' g=est, h=cal, F=from, T=to, M=to between dates, s=banns, t=lic
' b=british quarter dates (Mar Q , Jun Q , Sep Q ,
Dec Q )
' =date displayed with brackets around it...an estimated date
12 Dec 1800
' [=a private date used only for sorting purposes [[12 Dec 1800]]
' ?=a date with a question mark after it 12 Dec 1800 ?
' |=two dates with or between them 12 Dec 1888 or 13 Nov
1889 or 17 Feb 1718 or 1719
'
'If the Len(StoreDate) = 1
' ?=unk, a=dead, b=deceased, c=child, d=infant, e=stillborn,
f=young,

t=lic,
' u=not married, v=never married, ?=unknown

'b = bc flag

'Also, if the date is partially recognizable so that we can get a sort date
out of it, we put the
' pieces we recognize into the ddmmddmm slots, put a colon at the
beginning prefix position
' and then put a backslash (\) in the 19th position, followed by the date
entered by the user.
' So, if a date starts with a colon but has \ in position 19 then display
the Mid$(TheDate, 20)
  ' Close to 31 Jan 1961 becomes :031011961\Close to 31 Jan 1961
' This way we can act like the date is OK and display it as the user
entered it.

*** Sort Dates *

'Sort Date (long int) Used to display sorted list by date

if date is blank then - (sorts before any other date)
otherwise the number is made up of the mmdd digits

If no date, the number is -.
If there is a year but no month and no day then

I personally have no problem with commercials for products that can be
used with Legacy Family Tree as long as they are *labeled* as such, preferably
the first word after *[LegacyUG].* I get emails from other genealogy sites

Hello Fellow Users -

If you are a Legacy user who has a website produced from Legacy Family Tree,
then GenDexNetwork.org is for you!

Here is a quote from the website -

·GenDexNetwork.org is a genealogical index (GenDex) which searches for
persons in family trees on the internet. The first GenDex was operated by Gene
W. Stark from 1994 until 2004. It was begun when computer indexing for
genealogical information was in its infancy.
·GenDexNetwork.org connects the family trees to make one huge database.
Clicking on a name in the search results immediately takes you to the same
person on a family tree web page with their genealogical data.
·GenDexNetwork.org is FREE and will remain FREE!
·GenDexNetwork.org is more effective than normal search engines because:

·GenDex indexes all the family trees in one database
·GenDex can be searched by names, dates and places of birth and death
·GenDex includes all family trees in one search
·GenDex requires no joining or membership to search the database

Enjoy

Jim

Syble:

You have gotten other responses to your inquiry to which I agree. In
addition, I wanted to show one way (that I use) as my citation for all emails
received that have information included on family members. I am sure that
there are many variations; if I was starting out, I would use Elizabeth S.
Mill's book to find a standard citation.
Here is my blank citation:
Name [ID #]. email address. Subject (Information On
[Commentary] In Response To An
Email From The Compiler Dated [Date]). [Date Emailed]. Personal
Email. ([Date Read]).
Two explanatory notes:
1. ID# - if the email comes from a family member, that identifier goes here;
2. If I have asked for information then the phrase In Response . . . Dated
[Date] is used;
I hope that this helps in some way.

I was wondering how others handle this.

I receive e-mails from other family researchers asking various questions,
sometimes sending me information that I'd like to document and if I find
additional information be able to readily get back in touch with that
researcher. Sometimes I have a related person in my database and sometimes
not. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like to document this is Legacy,
any ideas would be appreciated.

As with a recent e-mail, I said I'd get back to her if I find additional
information, I have family folders in my e-mail program, but having it in
Legacy would be much more practical.

This is not a big deal, but just a nuisance. Whenever I open an
individual screen to add a new female or to edit an existing female, I
have to click the save button three times in order to save and close the
screen. Always 3 times. Males are no problem; marriages are no problem,
just females married or single. Any ideas on how to fix this?
 Check/repair didn't help.

I have traveled out of the U.S. several times. I would use an Event titled
Travel and use the passenger list as my source. Then there was my trip to
Vietnam in 1967; I do not list this as travel! This comes under Military and
uses my orders as the source.
You say that you have passenger lists for each arrival back in the U.S. Do
you have passenger lists for leaving the U.S. too?
If the family went back to Europe and then returned with another member who
was immigrating then that person would have an Immigration event.

Hello everyone,

I have a family where the husband and wife were both born in Europe,
immigrated to the US (at different times), married in the US and had
their family here. Over a 10 year period, this couple took their family back
and forth to Europe three times, so I have Passenger Lists for each
arrival back in the US.

I have entered an individual Immigration event for the husband and

for the wife that marking their first arrival. What I am not clear on
is how the three other Passenger Lists should be entered. Are these
arrivals considered Immigration events, or Emigration Events?
Does it make a difference?

Would appreciate some clarification.
Thanks,

ept them often involved with Military service for the men.

One thing lacking in Legacy is the ability to print a lineage report from me to

Just asking if this Trellis chart could be the answer for me.

and they appear to be all over the place.

I use the Legacy Archive a file when I'm done updating the project. I have
several projects going at one time. My Mom and Dad are separate as is my
husbands, a one name study and then my daughter in law and sons in law. When I
started 35 years ago with pencil and paper it didn't seem that big a deal.

I use restore in Legacy when I move the project from machine to machine.

Howland,
There are times when posts do disappear into the waste bin in the sky for
easons best known to a soothsayer.
The varying times of arrival of posts often have little to do with the ISPs at
ither end but more with the routes which they have taken to arrive at your

Are there problems with Megan Smolenyak's webinar? I have tried twice to
watch it. The first time, just before the second question, the screen turned

Any suggestions to solve the problem or are there problems at Legacy?

I’ve been working on my database for awhile now and have a question. How do you
all decide to add to your databases? Do you add anyone with the surname your
are searching or only those people with a confirmed link? Until now I’ve only
been adding only those that I can confirm a link. However, lately I’m wondering
if I’m overlooking a lot of potential links because they may be several
generations previous to the one I’m currently searching. Just wondering how you
all feel about this too. Thanks!

Howland,

I think LFS stands for Legacy Family Search, which is the whole new piece which
is the integration or interface between Legacy and New Family Search. In it,
you see data from your Legacy file on the left, and New Family Search on the
right.

Nfs is the Family Search site itself on the internet, which can be used totally
independent of Legacy, or any genealogy program if one so desires.

Bruce- (and everyone- I need all the help I can get on this one) when you put
things in the research notes, if you have numerous notes already in there, how
does one find the notes that tell you what you have got or not gotten on that
person? I'm still really shaky on how the whole research notes thing is used.
When I put things into it, I end up with page after page of disconnected
information. A paragraph here and another there. I want to source each, but
haven't figured out how to source each one separately. I realize that I have
opened a can of worms, but without them one may not catch the trophy fish. I

Hi Bruce,

Personally, I like to include a transcription of the census in the Research
Notes where I have a quick reference of the family line. I add this
transcription to the Research notes of each family member listed in the census.
This allows a quick review (all the information in one place) and helps me in
making sure I am on the right path.

I enter the census as an 'event' for each person and include a transcription in
the notes as well. Overkill? Maybe. If they are a direct line relative I also
include an image of the census page in the 'pictures' within the event.

As you can see from all the other replies, there is really no right or wrong,
it's what works best for you. Sometimes, though, we haven't yet figured out
what's best! However, this is coming from one who many would not consider a
'true' genealogist - I collect most anyone that connects to my line. I now have
approximately 23,000 relatives in a single tree of around 340,000 names. I
also work very closely with another researcher on the same tree and we each
enter the data a little differently. Documentation/sourcing is very important
and I don't think you can really overdo it. Thankfully Legacy can handle it!

Geoff:

Beating your own drum I see. How much do you getG? I hope you get a
lunch for each one sold. I am still debating whether I want to hold it in my
hand or be able to search through it. Is there a discount for both?

Re: [LegacyUG] GPS for street addresses - NOT

2011-09-27 Thread Howlanddavisii
Ladies Gentlemen:

The thread on GPS For Street Addresses was of interest to me. But it
was hijacked! Someone, especially Support, should have changed the subject
line. I am tired of looking at emails titled GPS that have nothing to do with
GPS.

Re: [LegacyUG] Birth - Marriage Records / Registers

2011-08-23 Thread Howlanddavisii
I may be completely off base but I would agree with John as far as a
single event (a record) or several events (register). I recently obtained my
mother's birth and death information. The death information was provided as a
Certificate Of Death listing her information only; this is a record. The
birth information was on a page listing births registered in Boston MA in 1916
and in almost chronological order (being dependent on the date of reporting)
with the birth numbers in order on the page (40 in all from Dec 12 - Dec 17,
1916). Listed in the register (across the double page) were the birth number,
date, name, sex, parents name, physician's name, place of birth, residence of
parents, occupation of father, birthplace of father, birthplace of mother and
date of record (when late?).
