Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Census event vs source
And I have found my grandfather enumerated as a child living with his parents in New York City and enumerated with his fellow students at a boarding school in northern Connecticut. Boy he moved fast. I realize that the likely happening is that his parents named him when they should not have. A person living on April 1st but not reported on the census as they had died in between as well as well as a person not born yet who was reported on the census. Lightfoot [mailto:br...@the-lightfoots.com] Sent: Friday, October 23, 2015 7:36 AM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Re: Census event vs source You are confusing the date of the census with the date the enumerator finally made it to that household. For example, the 1930 and 1940 US Census each contain the statement at the top of the form, "Name of each person whose usual place of residence on April 1, 1940 (or 1930), was in this household." It may not have been until June when the enumerator got around to a specific household but the data on the form was supposed to be valid as of April 1. If a family member died on April 2 or later, and the enumerator made his rounds later in June, then that person's name would still be listed on the census. The actual date that the census was taken by the enumerator which is hand-written in on each census page is of little value because it can sometime appear to show invalid information as you suggested in the case of a person that had died. If you pay attention to the official date of the census which is preprinted on each page, then your dead person was indeed alive and present on that date, was listed with the family, and was certainly an event for him. My great grandfather was said to be lying in a casket in the parlor when the census taker arrived. It could have been an event for him, but I wouldn't say he was actively involved in it. The other thing about the census is we don't know if the entire family was there at the time. Not being witness to it we can't say for certain it was an event for each family member. The head of household could have been the only one filling out the information which is why there are always discrepancies. Years ago I used to list the census as an event, but found it was just duplication because I also used it as a source. I still find some of them in my data that were never deleted. Anne: You have seen the responses about stopping the potential problem for individuals. But I would also have a reburial event for those that are affected. I have several people with potential burial problems and the problems stem from the following circumstances: 1. Burial took place within a few days of death; person was disinterred and reburied in a new location; i.e. from a family burial ground to a new cemetery. I have quite a few people this happened to. They lived in the Lexington, Kentucky area. 2. Cremation took place but ashes weren't interred for quite some time afterwards (several instances of this.) 3. Due to weather, person was not interred immediately. Most of these were due to people not being buried right away because ground was frozen. I don't want to turn off the potential problem alert, because it helps in correcting errors. Not sure what would happen if I add an additional burial event; make a custom re-burial event or used alternate burial event. [LegacyUG] Changing Picture Location In The Picture Gallery
LUGgers: Is there a way to move pictures in the picture gallery from one place to another when there are a lot of pictures (more than nine, let's say)? When I add a picture to the gallery, it is placed at the bottom. If it is a new picture (i.e., up to date, showing what the person looks like), I want to move it to the first position (top left) and set it as preferred. I realize that I can set it as preferred in any position but I like to see the most recent individual and group pictures that I have in the first row. So I go to the new picture and move it up one row, then to the next row, etc. Is there a faster way to do this (more pictures per row, more rows per screen, etc.)? I have tried to move it several rows at a time but that doesn't work. Howland Davis -Original Message- From: Michele/Support mich...@legacyfamilytree.com To: legacyusergroup legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Thu, Jun 11, 2015 7:55 am Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Teaching people how to use Legacy Kristen, I teach Legacy classes all the time. What I teach depends a bit on the audience. I have to take into consideration their level of computer knowledge in general, their knowledge of genealogy database programs in general, their knowledge of Legacy specifically and what level of genealogists they are. Class size also matters. I try to make it user driven as much as possible showing them how to do things that they specifically want to know. I do have some specific topics that I like to speak on, my favorite being cleaning up your file (standardization). I also do a lot with using Legacy with FamilySearch. Absolute beginner classes are great too because they are usually amazed ☺ We do have some materials for leaders of local user groups. These have not been updated since version 4.0 but they should still give you some ideas. http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Presentation.asp I also teach people one-on-one for anyone in the Columbia County Genealogical Society and the Augusta Genealogical Society (Georgia). All they have to do is call me and I will arrange to meet them at the Euchee Creek Library. I try to coordinate it with the monthly meeting of the CCGS (which happens to be today). They all know that I will stay after the meeting and help as well. I always have my laptop and the library has a nice projector. I suggest you start with some one-on-one because they will help you learn what sorts of things people are most interested in. As far as having a set curriculum... I use PowerPoint for my general genealogy presentations but I never do this when I am doing a Legacy class. I just crank Legacy up and have it on the screen as I talk. I encourage the class participants to have their laptops with them. They retain more if they are actually working in the program. I usually have a list of things I want to cover for that particular class but that's all the written notes I have. Since I know the program very well I don't need written notes other than a simple list of topics. A couple of minor thoughts 1) Use a neutral color scheme on your Legacy program so that the colors aren't distracting. If you are using a projector you will want to test the look out on the screen before you do the class. 2) If you use your real data file it is a good idea to bookmark specific people in your file that you can get to fast. You don't want to display living people in your file as you are navigating (your other option is to have a test file set up, I use both). 3) If your talk is on a specific topic and you have specific examples in your file to illustrate it, again, have these people bookmarked so that you don't spend a lot of time making people dizzy as you navigate through your file. 4) Keep the presentation to no longer than an hour. Any longer than that they will probably go into information overload, especially if you are working with beginners. Better to break it into two sessions if you need to. Re: [LegacyUG] First Birth After Marriage
To all who wrote: Thanks for your comments. But I understand why there is a potential problem and I understand, and have, excluded problems where I have checked. My concern, and comment. is why my grand aunt has the symbol but her parents do not when, if you would look for an additional child, my grand aunt's name would not be involved. Her parents' names would be; to me, that is what one would be looking for. You are looking for the birth of a child by the parents, not by a subsequent son/daughter. Howland Davis P.S. Nan, my given name is Howland, not Howard G, no problem. For three years, when I worked for Goodyear Tire, the company computer system changed Howland to Holland because I, obviously, did not know what I was typing. I finally found the right IT individual who changed the system so it would just underline Howland in red but not change it. And motels frequently take my reservation and then put it under Howland so that I am told that they have no reservation for Davis. -Original Message- From: Nan Bailey aus.bai...@gmail.com To: legacyusergroup legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Thu, Feb 12, 2015 4:34 am Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] First Birth After Marriage Howard, the red exclamation mark shows what Legacy sees as a possible error and one that says birth date too late after marriage just indicates that in usual circumstances, there would be births between the marriage date and that childs birth date. Mostly the first birth occurs within the first 2 - 3 years, so with the large gap, there is a strong possibility that there are births you haven't found or still births that may not even be recorded. It isn't saying your Great Aunt is the problem, just that before her birth there could be births you have missed. I found this out as I also had this message and I also know there are definitely no births beforehand in mine like you. Only 2 children show with the first wife because they are the only children linked to that couple (children of wives 2 and 3 are not 1/2 kids here). When the second wife is selected only the two children linked to him show (from this I assume he and the second wife had no children together and she has no children from another marriage). They show as 1/2 kids because the second wife is not their parent. The 5 children show with the third spouse because three children are linked to the third spouse and two are linked to him. Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Media Files
Jenny: Instead of letting Legacy look for the missing files navigate to each one yourself and when Legacy says something like original file was xxx, do you want to use this one which is yyy? you tell it you do. Legacy will then stop looking for the original filename and recognize the new filename. That is what I expected to happen and did happen on the other twenty missing files when I started the media file check yesterday. I clicked on the correct picture but it showed the picture as a new picture with no caption, date, description or file ID so I filled in the information and continued with the other five files of interest. The rest of the files were fixed as you said. So I now get those six as still missing but they are not. I was printing the report for a second time because, though I was born in 1942, I supposedly died in 1607 which meant I had multiple problems (dates and events) and my children were born well after my death Double G. [LegacyUG] Potential Problem - Unrecognized Event Date
In trying to clean up my Potential Problems, my sister has an unrecognized event date. I am trying to say that she worked at her present position from 1980 - present. Re: [LegacyUG] Two questions
Cheryl: 1. Oldtown, Allegany County, Maryland is the location I've given for an 1787 event. When I attempted to insert the Geo-location data, the program correctly complains that Allegany county wasn't formed until 1789. So, I then select when I know to be the name of the county from which Allegany was created; Geo-locator can't find Oldtown. Surely I'm doing /something/ wrong, but what? And yes that IS how Maryland spells Allegany. Using Animap, I find that in 1748, Oldtown was in Frederick County. In 1776, it was in Washington County. And in 1789 it was in Allegany County. The latitude given was 39.541 and the longitude was 78.611. I hope that helps. And you were right; my spell check does not like that spelling of Allegany. of course it does not like my first name either! I and my first wife are shown; this is not as I want it. 2) I go back to my great grandfather, etc., and then I come back down through my grandfather, then to his daughter and then to me. One of the spouses listed will have an asterisk (*) in the P column - that's the preferred spouse for this particular person. By default it is the first spouse attached to that person. If there is more than one spouse, you can choose which spouse will be the preferred one - that means that when you navigate to this person (not the spouse), this is the spouse who will appear next to them. It has no bearing on which is the first spouse or how they will appear in reports, that is determined using the Order arrows to sort them as you wish them to appear. [LegacyUG] Census Head Of Household Question
Luggers: I have an ancestor who was a supervisor in an asylum for the insane per the 1880 census. The first person listed for the dwelling is the superintendent of the facility. When I write a citation for the census, is he the head of the household or would I show the name of the facility as the household name (i.e., McLean Asylum for the Insane Household, 1880 U.S. Census, etc.)? Re: [LegacyUG] Emails Legacy
Syble: You have gotten other responses to your inquiry to which I agree. In addition, I wanted to show one way (that I use) as my citation for all emails received that have information included on family members. I am sure that there are many variations; if I was starting out, I would use Elizabeth S. Mill's book to find a standard citation. Here is my blank citation: Name [ID #]. email address. Subject (Information On [Commentary] In Response To An Email From The Compiler Dated [Date]). [Date Emailed]. Personal Email. ([Date Read]). Two explanatory notes: 1. ID# - if the email comes from a family member, that identifier goes here; 2. If I have asked for information then the phrase In Response . . . Dated [Date] is used; I hope that this helps in some way. Lavern: I have traveled out of the U.S. several times. I would use an Event titled Travel and use the passenger list as my source. Then there was my trip to Vietnam in 1967; I do not list this as travel! This comes under Military and uses my orders as the source. You say that you have passenger lists for each arrival back in the U.S. Do you have passenger lists for leaving the U.S. too? If the family went back to Europe and then returned with another member who was immigrating then that person would have an Immigration event. I'm still really shaky on how the whole research notes thing is used. When I put things into it, I end up with page after page of disconnected information. A paragraph here and another there. I want to source each, but haven't figured out how to source each one separately. I realize that I have opened a can of worms, but without them one may not catch the trophy fish. I add this transcription to the Research notes of each family member listed in the census. This allows a quick review (all the information in one place) and helps me in making sure I am on the right path. I enter the census as an 'event' for each person and include a transcription in the notes as well. Overkill? Maybe. If they are a direct line relative I also include an image of the census page in the 'pictures' within the event. As you can see from all the other replies, there is really no right or wrong, it's what works best for you. Sometimes, though, we haven't yet figured out what's best! However, this is coming from one who many would not consider a 'true' genealogist - I collect most anyone that connects to my line. I now have approximately 23,000 relatives in a single tree of around 340,000 names. I also work very closely with another researcher on the same tree and we each enter the data a little differently. Documentation/sourcing is very important and I don't think you can really overdo it. Thankfully Legacy can handle it! Re: [LegacyUG] GPS for street addresses - NOT
Ladies Gentlemen: The thread on GPS For Street Addresses was of interest to me. But it was hijacked! Someone, especially Support, should have changed the subject line. I am tired of looking at emails titled GPS that have nothing to do with GPS. Re: [LegacyUG] Birth - Marriage Records / Registers
I may be completely off base but I would agree with John as far as a single event (a record) or several events (register). I recently obtained my mother's birth and death information. The death information was provided as a Certificate Of Death listing her information only; this is a record. The birth information was on a page listing births registered in Boston MA in 1916 and in almost chronological order (being dependent on the date of reporting) with the birth numbers in order on the page (40 in all from Dec 12 - Dec 17, 1916). Listed in the register (across the double page) were the birth number, date, name, sex, parents name, physician's name, place of birth, residence of parents, occupation of father, birthplace of father, birthplace of mother and date of record (when late?).
