[LegacyUG] ***SPAM*** Re: Webinar on using ChatGPT

2023-12-06 Thread John Bernacki
I did not receive anything in Legacy News with that subject line. However,
I found it when I revisited the email: In the bottom left corner of the
email, I just noticed a little note saying “[message clipped]” with a link
beside it, saying “view entire message”. When I clicked on it, the full
email opened up, and when I scrolled down far enough, I found the link
about the ChatGPT webinar.

Perhaps My Heritage has made me too paranoid, but I am reluctant to
subscribe to webinars. In any case, I have finished researching genealogy
for now. My time is taken up by editing and polishing my draft,
comprehensive family history book.

Cheers,

John

[LegacyUG] Webinar on using ChatGPT

2023-12-04 Thread John Bernacki
I received an email from Legacy about upcoming webinars. The heading
included "5 Ways to Use ChatGPT for Genealogy". However, when I opened the
email, this topic was not among them. Nor was it mentioned in the Legacy
News section of Legacy Home. Although I am wary of using ChatGPT, I am very
curious to see the webinar. Where can I find it?

Re: [LegacyUG] Billing

2023-12-01 Thread John Bernacki
A long time ago, something similar was done to me by a My Heritage
subscription. They used every dirty trick in the book. I live in Australia
where there are no laws protecting people from vile companies like My
Heritage who use “Dark Patterns” tricks etc. They own Legacy, so perhaps
they are now starting to also dupe Legacy users who live in countries with
weak consumer protection laws.

Re: [LegacyUG] MyHeritage subscriptions

2023-08-08 Thread John Bernacki
There is usually no problem getting refunds for any payments made via
PayPal. I don’t know if this applies for payments made a long time ago.

When I wanted to unsubscribe from My Heritage, I had to search the internet
for a way to do so, because MyHeritage had buried the way, very deeply and
obscurely in their website. I believe that under US laws, companies must
make unsubscribing easy. I wish Australia would hurry to do this.

Re: [LegacyUG] MyHeritage subscriptions

2023-08-07 Thread John Bernacki
Ian,

Do you, like me, live in Australia? I once subscribed to MyHeritage and did
not know why I was subjected to every dirty trick in the book, while other
subscribers seemed happy with MyHeritage. Recently I found out the US has
strict laws against such “Dark Pattern” tricks, but Australia does not. It
appears to me that MyHeritage, instead of simply treating Australians the
same way as Americans, deliberately crafted their interface for
Australians, to trick them.

[LegacyUG] What does "Rebuild Source Citations" do?

2023-08-03 Thread John Bernacki
I was trying to solve some bugs, and somewhere within Legacy (I don't
remember where), I came across the option to "Rebuild Source Citations".
The bugs were not related to sources, but out of curiosity, I clicked on
it, thinking another screen would pop-up which would make it clearer what
it was about, or would provide options. Instead, it immediately went
through my database to perform the function. When completed, there was no
message. I checked some of my sources but did not notice any changes. What
did "Rebuild Source Citations" do to my database? I cannot find a reference
to it in Legacy Help.

[LegacyUG] Legacy tip

2022-09-22 Thread John Bernacki
After using Legacy for many years, I just found something that I really
wish I would have known about.

If you are in General Notes and you press control + F, you can find key
words you are searching for. It is far more convenient and effective than
using Search and Replace, especially when you are checking or searching for
information but not wanting to replace words. Has this feature been
commonly known to Legacy users? Perhaps some others will benefit from this
tip.

I use General Notes for my family history stories or biographies, and some
individuals have 30 – 50 pages each, so my “discovery” is a Godsend.

Cheers,

John

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding Page Numbers to already-created PDF Reports

2022-07-05 Thread John Bernacki
I think Brian's suggestion of using the Publication Centre is good. The
contents of the additional chapters you created, could be pasted into
Special Text Entry Pages or Place Holders. Also, in future you could much
more easily make different versions or new editions of your book, by adding
or withdrawing chapters or content. You could easily save a new version of
your book in the Publication Centre.

Re: [LegacyUG] myheritage bought out

2022-04-24 Thread John Bernacki
Reg,

I long time ago I subscribed to MH website and found the attitude or
culture behind it to be vile. They used every dirty trick to try getting
more money out of me. The website was misleading or did not have full
disclosure. If it did, it was buried. The website contained various
options, which when selected, were totally ignored. Maybe MH only treats
Australians like idiots or suckers. I do not want to waste any more of my
time on MH, even to give more details or examples of their vile behaviour.

Re: [LegacyUG] Changing color scheme in Family View.

2021-09-02 Thread John Bernacki
Hi Cathy,

Thank you. Going via Customise 9.2 solved the problem with saving. I hope
you can help with a related problem: I do not want gradient colors anywhere
in the Family View. The only way I found of doing this was to select the
"vintage" color scheme which does not have gradient colors for the parents
or children. I would however like to change those colors in the Family View
but I cannot work out how to do it. The main color I would like to change
is the framework around all the boxes. I have played around with the
options in the "Other User-Interface Colors, but seem to be going around in
circles.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.5: unrecognised items and lines from imported GEDCOM

2014-01-21 Thread John Bernacki
I would to thank people for the replies. I think Legacy is great software
except for the fact that it cannot handle all Polish diacritics. Legacy has
some diacritics in its Special Characters Bar, so I do not understand why a few
more cannot be included there. Why would it need a new platform (whatever that
is)?

I decided to subscribe to MyHeritage for one year- only for the database and
“super search” facility. I have no interest in its “Premium” subscription. It
has already proved better than Ancestry for me, because my parents were each
from different non-English speaking European countries. When I tried Ancestry
for a year, I only found a little information on very distant cousins descended
from people who emigrated to the US. Most of it I had already found by other
means. With MyHeritage, I have already found family groups of people who are
definitely relatives and others I am very confident are related somehow.

My Heritage is however irritating because it wants you to use its social media
and more expensive subscriptions, although they are probably cheaper than
Ancestry.

John

I have limited experience with MyHeritage, but that is because that program has
so many problems. I doesn't correctly import GEDCOMS, for one, so perhaps it
doesn't export them correctly either.

Some university needs to fund a new, comprehensive GEDCOM replacement, but if
Legacy can't display the other languages, that may do no good.

If the German names are showing, it may well be that it is the Legacy lack of
accommodation that is the problem. Many of us wish they would solve that
problem, but they tell us it would involve switching platforms. Some of us will
probably not live to see it happen.

This is my first experience with a GEDCOM, so I am not sure where the problem
is. The GEDCOM was sent by a distant cousin in Poland. We rely on electronic
translations which can be problematic enough, so I at least want get my facts
right before contacting him again.

I downloaded the GEDCOM into a new family file. The vast majority of
individuals are shown as “unknown” but some have dates of birth or death.
There are no names of places for anyone in this file.

Could these problems be caused by Legacy not recognizing names of individuals
or places containing Polish diacritics? The only names of people displayed are
German (without diacritics) from ancestors who emigrated to Poland in 1784.
This may however be a coincidence- I have previously tried pasting
letters/characters with diacritics into Legacy notes and the only thing that
happened when saving the information was that letters with diacritics were
automatically substituted with other letters or symbols.

My understanding is that GEDCOM is an international program and handles all
languages. It appears that the sender uses “MyHeritage” web based software,
which seems to be an international program where the user selects their
language.

Just before downloading the GEDCOM, Legacy showed only two “Unrecognized
items”: MOON and PRIN. Later, Legacy showed there were many “unrecognised
lines” for both “Individual Records” and “Family Records”, which were placed in
the notes. For example:

BIRT: RIN MH:IF438

DEAT: RIN MH:IF439

RIN MH:SC109

Technology is not my strong point, so I hope someone can help me solve this
“mystery”.

John

which seems to be an international program where the user selects their
language.

Just before downloading the GEDCOM, Legacy showed only two “Unrecognized
items”: MOON and PRIN. Later, Legacy showed there were many “unrecognised
lines” for both “Individual Records” and “Family Records”, which were placed in
the notes. For example:

BIRT: RIN MH:IF438

DEAT: RIN MH:IF439

RIN MH:SC109

Technology is not my strong point, so I hope someone can help me solve this
“mystery”.

Regards,

John

The word Ingenuus means freeborn, which perhaps suggests that what you

[LegacyUG] Merge problem in Legacy 7.5

2013-12-03 Thread John Bernacki
I had 2 unlinked families in the same file. Recently I finally found proof they
were related so proceeded to the merge a husband and wife in family A, with the
equivalent couple in family B. I had not used the merge tool before and found
it a bit confusing. After several attempts, all of the relationships appeared
correct in the family views, so I saved the merge.

I have since found that the chronology view and Legacy charting shows the
husband married twice to the same wife (everything identical including RINs).
Also, Legacy charts displays 2 identical sets of their children.

Is there an easy way to fix this? If not, would deleting the wife, re adding
her and then relinking all her relationships work, or only confuse things more?
I am in a “hole” and do not want to dig it any deeper.

John

You could use a file sharing app – for example Dropbox or Sugar Synch- the
first is more popular.

The only caveat is that you can’t use/update the Legacy file simultaneously –
for example, assume you have Legacy and Dropbox installed on your 2 computers
and laptop; you could open Legacy on one system, update records, then close
Legacy– when the file is closed Dropbox copies the updated file to the other
two systems. You could then go to either of the other systems and open Legacy
which will have the latest copy of the data.

Another way is to keep the data on a movable disk – such as a memory stick
(Flash Drive). I think Dropbox is the better solution.

What about breakdowns for old locations? Genealogists are supposed record the

Sorting

If you have created a custom event in Legacy 7 you will have to add your
own event sentences, roles and the sentences for those roles for your
custom event after your file has been converted by Legacy 8. Legacy 8
will not transfer the event sentences for custom events from Legacy 7
because the sentence structures and rules on what is used have changed
so drastically.

When defining a custom event or role for an event there are options to
populate the sentences with a default set or to copy them from another
event or event role. We do try to make it easy to use the new feature.
In your case you could copy the event sentences from the Legacy Standard
Census events and the role sentences from the census as you add roles to
your custom event.

good to include if possible. I don't like FTM or RM at all. Too cluttered

make it the dream software compared to the rest.

compi ler

Having read all the previous responses to this question, I shudder to think
how disappointed many Legacy users would be to find that their computer
files will probably not even be looked at following their death. Yes, there
are many close families that will make this an exception but on the other
hand there will be many whose computers will sit in the corner of a closet
or garage for years until somebody decides to do a spring house cleaning and
finally dispose of ol' grandpa's stuff. By that time, your computer's
operating system will be as ancient as Windows 3.1, your CDs and DVDs will
be suffering from bit-rot (assuming there still are such things as CD and
DVD players), and the Legacy company from Surprise, Arizona may no longer
exist or else the current version of Legacy is v124.6. For that matter,
Arizona may no longer exist.

I'd just like to pass along my recommendation for passing along your own
legacy: HARD COPY ! No exceptions.

[LegacyUG] Adjusting resolution in Publication Center

2012-07-26 Thread John Bernacki
I am a newbie to the Legacy User's Group. I would like advice about using the
Publication Center to produce high resolution (at least 300 dpi) books, to be
printed on a commercial printer. In the bottom right corner of the Publication
Center, the default number 80 is displayed. Is that for 80 dpi? If so, I
would presume that I would able to change the dpi, by changing that number,
before saving to a PDF file. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [LegacyUG] Use sources from one file in another file

2012-05-14 Thread John Bernacki
To copy a source with the detail as well: Go to the source that you wish to
copy, in the relevant person's List of Assigned Sources. Then copy source to
clipboard (click icon in bottom left corner). Go to the person to whom you
want add the source, and open their List of Assigned Sources. Click on the
relevant event to highlight it. Click on the icon that is immediately above the
clipboard icon- the source will 'pop up'. Click save.

Is there any way to use sources from one Legacy file in another Legacy file? I
cannot find any way to export or import sources. I have also tried to use the
source clipboard between two different files in split screen, but that does
work because each file has its own clipboard.
