[LegacyUG] Familysearch ID number

2022-05-13 Thread Barbara Lewis
I can’t find where the FS ID number is shown on the family view of Legacy.
Sometimes when a person is deleted from FS the ID doesn’t match up with the one
found in Legacy, but now I can’t find where that ID is found in Legacy??

Bruce in the Legacy FamilySearch module there is a sources tab. It's
useful but you do need to know that Sources can't be attached to all
events on the FamilySearch tree. It's to the Right of the Share Data tab.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch sync data question

I have looked at the family and created a test file using the people in the
family which Andrew provided.

For the list after Andrew manually added parents to his problem person it
solved his issue for that person but in the view Andrew provided there were now
three children with the red chain problem icon.

a. These three children had no equivalent person in the family at
FamilySearch(FS)

b. When clicking on the icon to transfer the child from Legacy to FS the only
option was to unlink, there was no option to add the person to FS offered.

I have examined the three problem children and in all three cases the person
with the FSID from Andrew's file has no parents shown at FS.

In conclusion it looks like you cannot add missing parents via Legacy. I am not
sure if this is a limitation imposed by FS on Legacy through the API which
controls what Legacy can do to manipulate FS data or is an error in the way
Legacy has implemented the transfer in the case of missing parents at FS.

To "fix" his problem with the three children he will have to add the missing
parents to the three children on the FS website just like he manually added
parents at FS to fix his original problem.

Andrew: I also suggest you send a report to Legacy as a problem report so the
programmers can examine the difficulty in transferring people when parents are
missing at FamilySearch but are present in the person's Legacy file.

I just had a case in my own file where my file had different parents

A careful examination of the sources in my file revealed that I had

Examining the source details for the marriage revealed that the
incorrect person was born in Ireland according to the marriage source
while my person was born in Canada.

I unlinked my person by deleting the incorrect FSID. A new search
found the correct FSID so the person is now linked to the correct
parents both in my file and in FamilySearch.org. I have unlinked the
incorrect spouse and children, deleted a whole bunch of events which
applied to the incorrect person and will now have to rebuild the
person's family (FS has a different spouse and list of children).

I have found exactly the same. The only solution I have come up with is to
note the FSID(s) of the child(ren) then go to the parents in FS and add the
child(ren) to the parents.

Very annoying because it makes the process take so much longer.

So, it appears that no parents are recorded on FamilySearch.org for this

done...?  The only option I get for the parents is ‘unlink’…

Must I go onto the web site FamilySearch.org to manually add each parent

function from the FS popup dialog?

You have eliminated two of the three possible reasons so by elimination
check for the third reason "The person is linked to the wrong individual
in FamilySearch." That becomes the most likely.

I just had a case in my own file where my file had different parents for
the FS person. The parents did not display and had the red chain icon on
the My Legacy Person side of the screen because of that difference.

A careful examination of the sources in my file revealed that I had
linked my Legacy person to the wrong FS person based on similar names of
parents but I had added an incorrect spouse from a marriage record.

Examining the source details for the marriage revealed that the
incorrect person was born in Ireland according to the marriage source
while my person was born in Canada.

I unlinked my person by deleting the incorrect FSID. A new search found
the correct FSID so the person is now linked to the correct parents both
in my file and in FamilySearch.org. I have unlinked the incorrect spouse
and children, deleted a whole bunch of events which applied to the
incorrect person and will now have to rebuild the person's family (FS
has a different spouse and list of children).

I have found exactly the same. The only solution I have come up with is
to note the FSID(s) of the child(ren) then go to the parents in FS and
add the child(ren) to the parents.

Very annoying because it makes the process take so much longer.

Often, I only have the "Unlink Person" option, and I cannot tell why I
cannot add that child to the currently displayed family in Family
Search.  The tool tip text states:

For this individual:

Doesn’t appear to be any duplicates.  FS states Possible Duplicates (0)

Person has death place and date, so should be considered not living.

The FS-ID is correct in Legacy and in Family Search.  LY6Z-6MR for this
example above.

So why can I not make this link in the Family Search pop up dialog?
E.g. copy the child from left hand side (My Legacy Person) to right hand

Or, maybe the question should be, why is the individual NOT displayed on
the right hand side (Family Search Person)?

Thanks,

[LegacyUG] FamilySearch sync data question

2020-04-05 Thread Andrew Robbie
Hi all,

Hope everyone is staying safely indoors and doing lots of family history stuff!
 :)

Question regarding synchronizing children via the Family Search popup dialog.

Often, I only have the "Unlink Person" option, and I cannot tell why I cannot
add that child to the currently displayed family in Family Search. The tool
tip text states:

For this individual:

Doesn’t appear to be any duplicates. FS states Possible Duplicates (0)

Person has death place and date, so should be considered not living.

The FS-ID is correct in Legacy and in Family Search. LY6Z-6MR for this example
above.

So why can I not make this link in the Family Search pop up dialog? E.g. copy
the child from left hand side (My Legacy Person) to right hand side (Family
Search Person).

Or, maybe the question should be, why is the individual NOT displayed on the
right hand side (Family Search Person)?

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi John, Sadly has been intermittent since Sat 6th April 2019 (AEST), same
message appearing.
Tried again as message implies and after few attempts connected only to do
complete sign in again (I am a registered LDS/Family Search member), this was
worse on Sun 14th April 2019.
Have had no problems since, my operating system is WIN 10 Ver 1903.

and had no problems whatsoever. You may need to re-install just the
FamilySearch module. You can send an email to supp...@legacyfamilytree.com

Re: [LegacyUG] Familysearch download - error

2017-03-11 Thread Darlene Dimitrie
I did finally manage to update to 8.0.0.596 - what I didn't put in the
other email is that I was trying to update and kept getting an error
about an "access violation".
This time I went to the Legacy Home Tab and did the update from there,
instead of having the LFS tell me I needed to update. This did work.
Now the LFS seems to be working better. I only got 725 people this time
and it finished fairly quickly. This looks accurate. I'm not sure why I
got 30,000'ish.

Thank you Brian and Cathy for your help. The latest update did the
trick and I appreciate the link to the training for LFS. I didn't
realize how it worked when I went in a few weeks ago and I ended up
using the chat support to have them guide me through fixing what I had
done. Boy, did I learn my lesson! I didn't know that it worked in
"collaborative" mode. I assumed it worked like Ancestry where you work
in your own little world and it doesn't affect other people's work.

The church made changes on the FamilySearch / Family Tree servers. The
latest release of Legacy 8.0.0.439 will work just fine.

However, you will probably run into problems with trying to use Legacy
FamilySearch in earlier builds and earlier versions of Legacy so please
update or upgrade right away if you are using this feature.

I am having a problem with opening FamilySearch on Legacy8, but the problem
is with just one of my family files. When I first opened this particular
family file, it did work with FamilySearch, now when I click on it, it
initializes, finds my FamilySearch password and then opens with the message
'Too few parameters. Expected 1'. If I click O.K. on the 'parameters'
message it keeps the main screen open, but there are no names in the list.
The message is 'No one is selected in the filter list, please select someone
or modify the filter list'. The 'Current Filter' is set to 'No extra
filtering'. I know there must be some small setting or maybe a missing
file?

Judith

Judith,

Did you set the option to integrate this family file with FamilySearch?

[LegacyUG] FamilySearch Error

2013-12-01 Thread Mike Fry
Been getting a lot of these messages when trying to merge individuals on
FamilySearch FamilyTree

Error merging individuals: Error number 400: HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request
This error can occur if the individuals are related or are different genders

Message is totally useless! As far as I can see, the message is appearing
because of a timeout. The merge has actually taken place (as evidenced by a
later attempt) but the results are not getting back to the program quick enough.

I'd send this to the other place but that's been so quiet as to be useless as
well.

[LegacyUG] FamilySearch Problem

2013-08-15 Thread Mike Fry
Downloaded and installed the latest edition of Legacy and have immediately
tripped over a problem in the FamilySearch interface.

I have individuals for whom no records exist within FamilySearch. The program
correctly identifies that there are no matches for these individuals. When I try
to add the Legacy individual to FamilySearch, nothing happens. The individual
does not get added. This does not happen with all such individuals. Some get
added and some don't.

I see the same thing happening in a case where there are possible matches, none
of whom match my individual. I still can't add the new individual to
FamilySearch.

RE: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch Problem

2013-08-15 Thread Paul Gray
Mike,

I am actually surprised that you can add any individuals at all. Family Search
'deactivated' the old interface API to newFamilySearch on June 30, and that's
the API that Legacy is still using to the best of my knowledge. (I think the
API still 'works' in the sense that you can view, and maybe even download, data
but I don't think it's possible to upload anything.)

Family Search has moved on to Family Tree, replacing newFamilySearch. Legacy
announced mid-June that they had been certified to use the new interface, and
that there would be an update by the end of June. We are still waiting.

Two comments - Dave, that's true that you can't open the Family File
in an earlier build or version once it's been converted, but if you
really need to, you *can* create a gedcom in the most recent build and
import it into the earlier one.

We haven't seen any problems with this update conversion, however it's
always wise to make a backup before updating Legacy. In Legacy v8,
you'll be given some very clear cut options to select when a
conversion is necessary. I'd recommend that you all take the few
seconds to do the backup!

Two comments - Dave, that's true that you can't open the Family File in an
earlier build or version once it's been converted, but if you really need to,
you *can* create a gedcom in the most recent build and import it into the
earlier one.

We haven't seen any problems with this update conversion, however it's always
wise to make a backup before updating Legacy. In Legacy v8, you'll be given
some very clear cut options to select when a conversion is necessary. I'd
recommend that you all take the few seconds to do the backup!

Sherry

I've been wondering the same thing. I've just opened FamilySearch inside
Legacy and I can go to nFS as before. I thought there was a way to go
from there to Family Tree but I guess not. It's the same login but not a
connected location yet. I'm guessing when it's time Legacy will make the
change to link up to Family Tree directly.

In the meantime, if I use Legacy to upload more information to nFS will
it also show up in Family Tree? Everything I put up to nFS last year is
also on FamilyTree. Just not sure how that would work right now.

I'd suggest you question and discuss on the LegacyFS (Legacy Family Search)

Discussions there center of Legacy as it related to Family Search and nFS and

I've been on Family Tree for nearly a year now in beta. Yes, changes made in
nFS will also appear in FT. The only thing I have heard conflicting stories
about is whether your nFS sources will transfer. Anyone looking to check out
FT can contact me off-list and we'll see what we can do.

I'm looking forward myself to see what Legacy does with FT. I would love to
see some kind of Source Box integration (hint hint).

JL:

What I'm understanding at this point is that Family Tree and
new.FamilySearch are just different views of the same database but they each
have slightly different capabilities. I log on to new.FamilySearch directly
or through Legacy but go to Family Tree via FamilySearch.org. I believe
you're probably correct in guessing that Legacy will switch over to Family
Tree at some point. Maybe that's what version 8 is about?

Re: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch (and Legacy file organization)

2011-08-02 Thread Connie Sheets
Rich's information, below, is perhaps the most accurate in this thread.

Although I've been registered for a long time, and help with indexing, I'm not
a Church member so I do not yet have access to the family trees (although some
non-LDS who have received invitations do have access).  The family trees is the
only thing I don't have access to.  I have incredible FREE access to all kinds
of databases and images of original records.

Anyone who is not LDS and isn't using Family Search Historical Records is
missing out on a treasure trove of original source material; better than
Ancestry.com already, IMO, at least for the geographic areas where I research.

I'm guessing though that we're off topic.  To answer the original question in
this thread, I would create and use only one database.  You really don't need
multiple databases in Legacy, IMO, unless you want to keep someone else's
gedcom in a separate database.

Re: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch (and Legacy file organization)

2011-08-02 Thread Robert E. Carneal
The only time I maintain separate databases is when the main subject
is different. I keep human (i.e., my family) in one database,
cemeteries I have transcribed in another database. Ie., Kentucky
cemeteries I keep under KyCem, Indiana cemeteries I keep in InCem,
Virginia Cemeteries I keep in VaCem, and so on.

If I transcribe a book, I will put that into it's own file, unless,
the book is related to my family.

Kinda off topic, but that is how I do it.

Thanks.  -Robert

Re: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch

2010-03-16 Thread Ron Ferguson
Michael,

No, that is incorrect. Only yesterday Geoff, yet again, stated that the
increased functionality which Family Search will make available to the
general public, ie. non-LDS members, will be available in due course. That
is when Family Search are satisfied that it is properly debugged etc.. The
current phase should be regarded as a Beta test. At that time some, but not
the confidential LDS Members section, will be available in the Legacy
Program.

At the present time the facility is only of use to LDS members. And, know it
is not yet known when the general section will be availbale. Their IGI is
currently available through Legacy.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, but the link you posted
(Family Search Pilot, or sometimes called Family Search Labs)
involves actual records (e.g., indexes and digital images of
original records like Ohio Death Certificates and Argentina census
records, both of which I've had the need to use, believe it or not).
In other words, it is #5 on Heather Stovold's explanation earlier
today of the various FamilySearch collections. You do not have to
be an LDS member to use this site.

The only portion of FamilySearch one needs to be an LDS member to
use is NewFamilySearch (#4 on Heather's list). Legacy 7.4 has been
built to be compliant with NewFamilySearch (along with correcting
things that are important to all of us, not just LDS members).

That's what Millennia have been saying all along.

If Legacy is to be used by LDS members for Temple work, than it has to
be certified. You can't expect Millennia to wait until the LDS make the
new stuff public before they start this process, so the development has
gone hand in hand with the LDS beta testing of their new site.

Eventually - big word that one! - the LDS will make their
new-and-improved FamilySearch site available to everyone, at which time,
Legacy will work 'out of the box'.

I'm not a member of the LDS and I don't expect to make a lot of use of

Ok, I have a yes and a no. Once 7.5 comes out I assume it will be
certified for LDS work and it will be of great benefit for LDS users. I
can see how this will be of great use to LDS members but, will it do
anything for the rest of us? And is there any time estimate or is it
simply that it will happen when it happens? I am just curious.

Re: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch

2010-03-16 Thread Rick Merrill
So if you are not an LDS member then all this new FamilySearch
functionality that is now in Legacy is useless? This new stuff is for
 LDS only?

Yes, that is true for right now. The new stuff with Legacy FamilySearch is
only useful to the members of the LDS Church. They need this feature to
interact with the new FamilySearch data base that is currently only
available to members of the church. If Legacy does not provide this
interface the those customers will be have to leave Legacy for another
genealogical software that does.

But there are many great resources available to everyone right now.

Such as the regular FamilySearch site http://www.familysearch.org that give
you access to many great records and even online tutorials on how to do
research around the word.

Or the http://labs.familysearch.org/ website where you can find access to
the images and indexes that are being done by volunteers around the world.
The LDS church has over 24 million rolls of microfilm with information from
around the world. You can look up in the catalogue and have your local
Family History Library order them for you at a minimal charge. They are
currently digitizing all of these rolls of file and then indexing them at a
rate of around 1 million names a day. This is then being put online for
free though this website.

IN THE FUTURE the new FamilySearch website will be open to everyone. At
which time you will be able to access it through the Legacy FamilySearch.

SO WHAT YOU ASK. On Ancestry or Roots web and other site you upload you
family tree for other so see. So does you brother, your Great Aunt, and
your Cousin twice removed. And a lot of the data is identical and some of
the work may be your own research repeated a few times. But yet they are
STILL SEPARATE FAMILY TREES. What the new FamilySearch is doing is merging
all the trees and information that it has into ONE FAMILY TREE with all
those people linked together. This is a collaborative effort. So if
someone has something different you can contact each other and get the real
facts correct. When it is finished I think you will find it a great asset
to your own research.

But currently there are a few difficulties. One it currently takes some 650
serves to run the website. Some 350 just to do the searching. The backup
takes some 21 Tera Bits of hard drive. And you thought your data base was
large. The family tree currently contains some 1.4 BILLION names. That
will be helpful in anyone's research. Another problem. Currently there is
only a place for notes. No Sourcing. But I am sure it will be available
someday and maybe even linking images such as census images or the SSDI.
But that really will take a lot of computing power.

So for EVERONE there is something usefull from the regular FamilySearch and
in the FUTURE more great stuff in the new FamilySearch.

Re: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch

2010-03-15 Thread Heather Stovold
Just wanted to add a bit more information on the LDS records.

1. Ancestral File - as noted below - submitted by researchers - a repository
of family trees. Some are very good, some are totally horrible.

2. IGI - as noted below - from 2 sources - submitted by researchers, and
extracted from records
3. Pedegree Resource File - replaced the Ancestral File (had a few more
features) - and has same limitations on accuracy.

4. New Family Search - THIS IS A BETA. - currently available only to LDS
members (and that has been slowly rolled out to LDS members 1 geographic
region at a time to limit the number of people and the number of problems.)
I believe the hope is for it to become a large linked tree with
collaboration between people, yet people being able to control the
information they have submitted. It is very ambitious, as some of the
ancestral people entered in it will have hundreds or thousands of
descendants working on the information for them. Information that is in it
comes from various sources - including
a. - Each of the 3 sources of records listed above
b. - LDS Church membership records - records/information of living members
is only available to that person (and maybe their very immediate family
members?) - deceased members have the records available to others.
c. - Information submitted/edted currently by people - This would be where
the Legacy linkup would come in... or other genealogy software - or people
can enter stuff directly. Again - take with a grain of salt. Good thing is
that source information is now able to be submitted, so you can check things
easier.
d. - other???

5 - Family Search - PILOT - This includes the Indexing project, where the
millions (billions?) of microfilmed actual records stored by the LDS church
from various government and (other) church records are being computerized.
I always look forward to seeing more here!!!
As said below (I copied it)
a. Transcriptions of actual parish, govt, records - often with a link
to the image of the actual record. Again, the reliability is no different
than that of any other transcribed source.
b. Images scanned from the microfilmed records not yet transcribed or
indexed. These images are the exact same thing you would see if you went to
a church and viewed the actual parish registers. Or to the state or county
office and viewed the actual record.

Note that on the pilot site, there are also some other little projects that
may or may not be developed furthur. This is available to anyone I
think

6. - The millions (billions) of microfilmed actual records - available to be
sent to various Family History Libraries worldwide (for basically shipping
costs) for you to view.

Please be careful about lumping all LDS records into the same
category. There are actually several different categories, and the
reliability varies. Many are indeed sourced very accurately.

 1. Ancestral File: Yes, these are records submitted by researchers,
generally without sources and so must be taken as possibly correct or
possibly incorrect - but valid as suggestions for where to look for other
 records.

 2. IGI: Some are submitted by researchers. Others are records extracted
from actual parish records, government records, etc. The batch number and
the identified source film will identify those records. Those are as
reliable as any other set of transcribed records- whether it be on Ancestry,
FreeBMD, FreeREG, etc. The short coming of the extracted records is that
not all the available information is transcribed. But seeking the
identified source will provide the extra info.

 3. Pedigree Resource File: Similar to (1) above.

 4. Family Search pilot site: This combines two sets of records.

Michael,

The new.FamilySearch has been in beta for a few years. There are all
sorts of rumors when it will be available. I am on the test team and it
is on .99 which means it is getting closer for release (Closer is
relative). Having said that, it will probably (My assumption) only be
available to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
To be released to the general public, is up to the General Authorities
of the Church. I don't think even the software developers know when the
project will be done, for it is constantly evolving. So my guess is
*shrug* :-)

the point is that like any other depository they are a source of leads and

2010-03-13 Thread CLARK1528
Please be careful about lumping all LDS records into the same category.
There are actually several different categories, and the reliability
varies. Many are indeed sourced very accurately.

1. Ancestral File: Yes, these are records submitted by researchers,
generally without sources and so must be taken as possibly correct or possibly
incorrect - but valid as suggestions for where to look for other records.

The short coming of the extracted records is that not
all the available information is transcribed. But seeking the identified
source will provide the extra info.

3. Pedigree Resource File: Similar to (1) above.

4. Family Search pilot site: This combines two sets of records.
a. Transcriptions of actual parish, govt, records - often with a link
to the image of the actual record. Again, the reliability is no different
than that of any other transcribed source.
b. Images scanned from the microfilmed records not yet transcribed or
indexed. These images are the exact same thing you would see if you went
to a church and viewed the actual parish registers. Or to the state or
county office and viewed the actual record.

Kath,

What you say is very true, and an excellent Caveat for any careful
researcher. Most repositories that I have seen lack in documentation that
is
carefully verified and sourced, and many are outright plagerized. I think
the point is that like any other depository they are a source of leads and
clues, that need further research, verification, and accurate source
citations.

The main issue I have with LDS records are that they aren't verified or
sourced. Any LDS member can put information up that is just based on family
talk. Nevertheless it is a good place to start and a source if you have
nothing else.
Happy searching

Graham,

I am not an LDS member, therefore, I cannot speak for those that are,
however, I have found FamilySearch.org to be an excellent resource. I have
found clues that, after further research and verification, actually helped
to break through some brick walls. FamilySearch Labs also has some
interesting tools under development, however, they are at a point where
they
can be used.

Personally, I view FamilySearch.org just like any other depository i.e.
Ancestry.com (hope I don't get into trouble for using that word). The
information that is available is only as good as the researcher that
provided the information, however, it is an excellent source for leads,
etc.

Here  are a couple of links, if you don't have them;
http://labs.familysearch.org These are various Lab tools under development.
http://www.familysearch.org I do have an account with this one (not
new.familysearch.org)

Hope this helps a little,

Charles

RE: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch

2010-03-13 Thread Kath
I was referring to the records in the LDS put in by individuals without any
formal reference.
e.g. My mothers brother is about 7 years younger than her and she was born
in 1915. I'm pretty sure he was born in the same place she was so I enter
his name and date of birth as 1922 and the same place of birth as my mother.
The reality is her parents had moved by then and he was born in a different
location. He isn't really 7 years younger, it's actually 8. Even though he
is always known as John his full name is actually William John.

Cheers
Kathy

Kathy,

While you mentioned below that LDS records aren't verfied, you didn't
mention where you found these unverified records. Such a blanket
statement sounds to me to be somewhat ambiguous.

Are you referring to the Ancestral File records, or the IGI records, or the
Social Security Death Index records, or the microfilmed records of various
governmental localities around the world, or the recently begun scanning and

indexing of records which also appear on the FamilySearch.org site. Or
perhaps you are referring to the totally different site called the
New.FamilySearch web site?

So, I would appreciate your clarifying your statement.
