[LIB] Help, what wifi card will work with a 70CL
Date: Sun, 31 Jul 2005 13:32:49 -0400 From: ujb [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Help, what wifi card will work with a 70CL I'm a new owner just getting stated and have two questions about WiFi. I've tried two WiFi cards so far on my Libretto 70 CL (32 MB) running Win 98, a VCTnet and an Airplus by D-link and the computer doesn't see either one? Both work on my Toshiba 2180 CDT with out a flaw. Also I'd like to get WiFi working on a 50 CT with 16 MB, can it be done in win 95? Thanks, ujb -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Look at the part that slides into your computer. Do you see a gold strip with bumps on it? That indicates that the card is a cardbus card and will not work on the 50 or 70, but will on a 100 and above. What you need to do is stay away from card bus cards. So basically that means the old 802.11b cards. I believe that linksys has a CF card for PDA that if it has drivers for your Windows 95 system may give you somewhat higher speeds, or allow you to connect to a g network. Now that I have a clue I'll see if I can find drivers for an old Wave Buddy without the gold strip. Thanks again, ujb FYI: Seems I've had at least one cardbus PC card that didn't have those bumps on it. I could be wrong. But it'd probably be best to check the specs on any specific card before you go nuts trying to get it working in the 50/70CT models that don't support a 32 bit cardbus interface Matt Wanted: 110 motherboard or bare bones 110 system Libretto list info: Libretto list archive #1: http://www.technoir.nu/cgi-bin/libretto.cgi Libretto list archive #2: http://www.mail-archive.com/libretto@basiclink.com/ To unsubscribe: http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/2004/msg01419.html David Hettel wrote: Date: Sun, 31 Jul 2005 13:42:03 -0400 From: David Hettel [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [LIB] Help, what wifi card will work with a 70CL Ok look at the two cards that you have that do not work. I found a Belkin Wireless card adapter F506020 ver.2 new at Best Buy last year. Another thing to try is WIFI CF Card used with pcmcia to cf card adapter. I tried to use the belkin in the jornada but belkin didn't offer CE 3.0 support. I noticed there was windows support for the cf cards. I'm considering buying this system: Inspiron 8600, Intel Pentium MProcessor 725 (1.6GHz), 15.4in WUXGA 0) Keep in mind that laptops, like most other computer components, depreciate AT LEAST 50% PER YEAR or MORE! In other words, you can expect to buy a new Inspiron 8600 for about 1/2 the price you are paying for it this year, or about $900 next year. This also means if you're smart and spend less, you can use the money you have left over to upgrade to a new system next year -- rather than spending a whole bunch this year, and not being able to upgrade next year, or the year after that as well. This is often times the 'smart' way to stay ahead of the game while spending a smaller amount each year. 1) The cheaper deal that would run rings around this baby would be the eMachines Athlon 64+ laptops. They've benchmarked very high in 3dMarks as well as standard office apps, and although not the ultimate highest in these marks, among the fastest available laptops for a really good price of $1400. Even PC Magazine rated it as the fastest notebook they've ever tested earlier this year, and you can get lots of tips on tweaking this notebook on the eMachines forums. http://www.dexplor.com/phpBB2/index.php?sid=b626ba12cf1057831610a500feb04728 http://reviews.cnet.com/eMachines_M6811/4505-3121_7-30994117-5.html http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=eMachines_M6810 Benchmarks on one guy's M6805 goes 11,000+ 3dmarks03/3100+ 3dmarks03 -- pretty awesome for a notebook w/o spending over $1400! Their laptops have dropped =significantly= in terms of reliability from the 2002/2003 to the 2004 year. See PCMag.com 2004 Reliability Survey. http://common.ziffdavisinternet.com/util_get_image/7/0,1311,sz=1i=77230,00.gif Here, ignore the 'subjective' ratings, and look closely at the column that says : percent needing repair - 24%!!! I don't know about you, but 1 out of 4 notebooks from Dell.com being bad is no good in my book. Even Toshiba at 17% or SOny at 16% are far better deals. Then again, if you're cheap, nothing like giving your sister a bad notebook that'll have a good chance of breaking =p 3) BLACK FRIDAY! BLACK FRIDAY! BLACK FRIDAY!! Some of the very hottest sales are coming up in a few days, and the day right after Thanksgiving is usually the one loaded with the hotest Friday weekend prices around! (eg. last year, brand-new Toshiba notebook for $499 after rebates) Expect killer sales for those that wake up early (yes, you MUST BE IN LINE at BestBuy and most other places by 3AM or else you will not be able to buy the hot items! Excellent eBay resale, naturally, for some needed $. 4) Avoid anything with Celeron in them like the plague -- very poor battery life, and bechmarks on a 2.8Ghz Celeron are so slow, you might as well throw away your money. Pentium M CPUs typically run about 1.5x to 2x faster than they're rated, so a 2Ghz P-M is similar to a 3.0-3.4Ghz P4 (depending on application) in a laptop environement for the top end notebooks. BUT just like the recent PCMag.com review found in their annual notebook review, not all same-speed P-M CPU notebooks run as fast! IBMs are typically no-frill, solid units. Toshiba are typically reliable and good value. Panasonic Toughbooks range from rugged to indestructible. Sony are expensive and very flashy units. Dell used to be a good choice, but their quality has dropped somewhat in recent years. Still, they have decent support and good prices. Haven't looked too much at Fujitsu recently - I suspect they are hard to find in Canada, so I can't comment on them. Above and beyond brand names, anything based on the Pentium-M chip (Like the Centrino platform stuff) is a good way to go. You usually get a much more portable and battery friendly machine than trying to go with a P4 or Athlon. Tory

I'm reasonably sure he has the same card as I got... so he either got a floppy I didn't, found a driver somewhere buried in the floppies I've actually scoured myself, or did a smarter search of the net than I did and came up with something. Does it work in DOS, Windows, or both? It works in Windows only I think...at least it opens in windows then does some prep work then restarts Libretto as I recall...so whether it reboots in Windows or DOS, I don't remember exactly... If you're working in DOS from your Libretto, your problem may be that your Libretto can't see HHDs larger than 8GB in DOS without drive overlay. Right... Your other notebook seems to be capable of seeing the entire 60GB of the new HDD. Have you tried putting the 60GB HDD in the firewire case connected to your other notebook, and running DriveImage from there? Matt Didn't think of that, but that's good idea!! Although would be nice to get DriveImage working on Libretto... Well, it very well may be a problem with the Libretto BIOS's 8GB HDD limitation. Windows can deal with it as long as it's running. But as I reported here: http://www.technoir.nu/libretto/list/2004/msg00505.html PM (Edit: Partition Magic) requires EZ-Drive to be installed on a 8gb HDD to work correctly in DOS booted from HDD or FDD, as well as when booted into Windows. Your imaging problems with DriveImage may very well be similar to the ones I've seen with Partitiion Magic in that list post above, as well as similar problems I've had imaging a 8GB HDD with Norton Ghost. Ghost required the correct command line switch to be run depending on whether or not drive overlay exists on a HDD. You might try installing EZ-Drive drive overlay, and then running DriveImage. Or see if DriveImage has a command line switch that gets it to run without errors. EZ-Drive installs EZ-BIOS very easily. Once the installation program is run from a boot FD, don't use the 'advanced' or 'automatic' installation menu item at the top of the list (I'm a bit fuzzy on the name of the menu item) that will actually wipe and create partitions automatically. Choose the 2nd menu item from the top, I think 'EZ-Dribe Setup', or something like that. In there you can quickly install EZ-BIOS in one quick action. Remove FD, exit setup, and the system will reboot. Then try DriveImage and see if it works. EZ-BIOS uninstalls just as easily. But going into that EZ-BIOS setup as before, you have to 1st 'disable' EZ-BIOS (or EZ-Drive), save and exit that menu. Then go back in again, and select the 'uninstall' option. If you want to try this, and can't find a copy of EZ-Drive, let me know and I'll send you a copy. Matt _ Express yourself with the new version of MSN Messenger! Works great! Only issue now relates to my partitioning new drive with PartitionMagic before installing Win98SE. Put drive in external FireWire case and connected it to my other laptop to partition. What exactly did you do with the new HDD connected via a firewire case to your other notebook? You said you partitioned it. I used PartitionMagic8 to partition it into 2 partitions, one primary and one other. * While partitioning, did you allow for the Lib BIOS hibernation space at the 8GB boundry on the new HDD? WHOOPS! ;-) Just made the first partition about 40GB * Did you load the Windows 98SE installatioin files onto the new drive via your other notebook, then put the new HDD in the Libretto and install the OS? That's correct. * Did you install drive overlay on the new HDD like EZ-Drive to enable extended Int13 BIOS calls? No, thought I didn't need to do this if I partitioned drive with PartitionMagic (if I understand other posts correctly). While Windows/Apps are working OK, when I tried using DriveImage to make backup image to my new EXP CDRW-2400 drive, I get error message #626: Now is this using the new 60GB HDD in the Libretto set up with W98SE as above or some other method, and imaging to your old HDD in the EXP CDRW-2400? If so... goto: $#^%@ If not, are you trying to image a partition on your old HDD to the new HDD in the EXP CDRW-2400? No $#^%@ I'm not familiar with DriveImage. [LIB] HELP - Install CD-RW Driver
Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 21:53:06 -0700 From: Mark Srebnik [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: HELP - Install CD-RW Driver Hello Libretterati, Could really use some help trying to get my new external CD-RW working...very frustrated right now... It has PCMCIA card (or USB interface) CD-RW made by CenDyne. Came with both interface cables and a floppy disk with drivers. I may have screwed things up trying to install drivers I tried installing using some sort of DOS app that was already installed by the previous Libretto owner. The INSTALL.EXE app did run in the DOS app window and then I rebooted, but when I plug in the CD-RW drive it froze up the Libretto. After rebooting, tried doing restart in MS-DOS mode, but can't seem to get the INSTALL.EXE to run. Think it's been too many years since I had my ol' 386 and can't remember the right DOS commands ;-) Anyway, below is the ReadMe file on the floppy disk. Unfortunately, that's all the info I have with the drive. It does refer to the INSTALL.EXE file just before section I.2. Also, I do get error messages I.2.b and I.2.e during startup. Win95 is on Libretto now. Wanted to get CD-RW drive working so I could upgrade to Win98, install other apps from CD's, etc. Do I need to do something first to 'undo' my first install attempt with that DOS app? What DOS command should I use to run the INSTALL.EXE file? Any other suggestions? Thanks! Tks, Lazar Lazar... I wonder if you're having the same problems receiving Libretto list messages that I am. Days, and sometimes weeks will go by, and I get no mail from the list that most other members are getting. I have to go to the archives to read mail, and all the posts there are at least a couple days old. But here's my reply to your original post, as well as one from David Chien. Let me know if you've received these already: --- From: Matt Hanson [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Lazar Krym [EMAIL PROTECTED] I do not write often to this list, but I read most of the messages. And I need now some help. I recently have changed the 4.3G HD by a 20G HD in my Lib 110 (64M RAM, WIN98SE). Windows, all the Lib drivers and my programs were installed from scratch. The problem I'm having is that the Lib is very slow. (very, very, very). As an exemple, it spends around 1,5 minutes to open/change a Window Explorer window. I am not an expert in configuring Windows, but I think that the configuration files could be changed for improvements, mainly in memory management. An indication that something is wrong in those files can be that, when booting with an IBM Microdrive inserted in the PCMCIA slot, I get a STACK OVERFLOW error message, and the boot stops. No trouble when inserting the microdrive after the boot is completed. The current configuration files ara attached. Thanks in advance for any help and a great Christmas and New Year for you all Lazar Krym As soon as the system has booted, go to 'Start Menu | Settings | Control Panel' and the 'Performance' tab and check 'System Resources'. Go 'Start Menu | Run' and type in 'msconfig', hit Enter, and go to the 'Startup' tab to turn off everything you can. Only 'Exporer' is needed, but you'll want 'systray' too. The most practical solution for setting up Windows on the Libby hard drives is to get a cheap 3.5 to 2.5 IDE adapter. Pull the HDD out of the Libby, and plug it in as the master drive in a desktop PC running windows. Boot from a Win98 boot FDD, select 'CD-ROM support' with the Windows installation CD in the drive, CD\ to the CD-ROM drive, and run 'setup' from there. No info I'm especially privy to, as the process has been written up many times on the list throught the years where I 1st learned it. My Windows 98SE stalls right after the startup sound. You might try hitting F8 at boot, and try going into safe mode. Not quite sure what else you can do to address your problems if you get there though. PCMCIA support in dos is extremely tricky as any installation of PCMCIA software usually goes for the harddrive, and many places must be edited for the software to load properly from floppy. But I have done this once. If only I could find that floppy I could give the files to you and let you interegrate the dos driver for the correct cd drive - they are all different, it is just the PCMCIA layer and MSCDEX that will be the same. I ran scandisk and all is well there so here it sit. Scandisk will only (barely actually) account for the basic state of the files on the disk, it won't make any decisions on how those files will work. It is like the basic neighbourhood watch, they look at your house to see if it still there, but they are not liable if you find the house emptied when you arrive back. I loaded the backups of the registry and that did not work much to my surprise. I may have to get pro help as it is the only PC I have. Serious counselling is expensive, save yourself the money for a shrink and have your computer fixed instead, that will remove the stress symptom ;) Your neighbour may not be a pro, but a 2.5'' harddrive USB box kit will cost you little and be of so much help. So go get one, then put the libbys disk into it and knock on the door to a neighbour, friend, collegue, someone who owes you a favour - it's time to cash in the favours. Or to make new friends that'll work, but probably set you up for a favour to someone later on. -breiler ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. Install Win98 fresh and you can boot and pull everything off. If needed, you can try to repair the other win98 install with the working one, then delete the new or old win98/program directory depending on your results. 3) Backup to CD-R discs often! Symantec Ghost or Powerquest Drive Image are highly recommended. You can easily restore from these backups in minutes when your PC goes bad in the future. 4) If you're in Los Angeles, let me know and I can help in person. --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Date: Wed, 10 Dec 2003 10:02:15 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [LIB] HELP! Can't remember if this is the one or I am remembering for the 110.. It could be me.. But any old Windows boot floppy made from some other system will get you to the DOS prompt. If one uses a proper bootdiskette one can with great success comment out the scsi sections of the config.sys nd autoexec.bat files ;) You can re-install Windows from there if the installation files are still on you hard drive. CD\ to the installation directory, and run 'setup'. You might 1st want to check to see if your old Win98 setup is recoverable. What happened to loose access to it? Sometimes all you need to do is run a Windows boot FDD, and then run scandisk. Or fdisk /MNR, then sys C: and if that fails try installing over the previous instalaltion, if anything was missing it will be repaired, if on the other hand there is a virus, the best thing to do is to discard the current setup, format the disk (/Q to make it fast). Whenever I find myself starting over I do this. I boot up and load XMSMMGR 2048 from the cd insatllation directory, then I wipe the disk using either deltree /Y C:\ if I remembered to put that on the boot floppy I use. Or I use format C: /Q to make a quick format of the drive. Then I issue these commands md c:\w98uk2 c: cd w98uk2 copy X:\system\*.* md vga md audio md zoom md 3com (here I copy the contents of the driver floppies for these devices onto the harddrives subdirs. using copy A:. vga, or the contents of the driver directory for Windows 98 on the cd for the device. Zoom is my wireless lan card, 3COM my network card) I start the installation of windows. And go through it. And choose standard stuff. Upon 2nd boot I install the drivers, and after booting up again I install TotalCommander (used to bne WinCommander), and set up to have TweakUI for Windows 98 - powertoys, autologon to the network, set display preferences to have no animated windows, and no autoplayback of cds in the cd drive. Those are the basics. I leave all the instalaltion files on the disk in the \win98uk2 directory, and preserve the structure. After that I can go about installing software and insert any data I have backed up prior to starting over. When All is done I usually make a ghostimage of the C: drive. Usually my C: drive is set to 1500MB but on some systems where I will be using more software I set it to 2GB. The last thing I install is antivirus software, which is then updated and s scan is made, I never bother system emergency floppies, as everything I need including data files less than 24 hrs old are on my network. Which of course is also antivirus protected - on a machine that never reboots, and when it is is thoroughly scanned. A trick I've learned in the past when making multiplle attempts to get Windows set up on the same system is to run 'setup /is'. Once scandisk has checked the HDD, there's no need (at least in my experience) to have to have scandisk run each subsequent attempt to setup Windows if you have problems the 1st time. The /is switch skips running scandisk. Indeed it is slightly speedier. I also like keeping the Win98 installation files on a 2nd partition. That way I can run 'format c:', to start from a clean file syste, I find that if I need to format C: then I won't be using any files on the computer in question but load from CD or equivalent from my server. There usually is a reason why software fails. -breiler ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. I went to reload it all and found my recovery boot diskette is bad as well! Does any one have one? Its 1.2 meg so it is uploadable. Thanks everybody, Bill Boy... I don't even recall getting a recovery FDD when I bought my 50CT back in '97. But any old Windows boot floppy made from some other system will get you to the DOS prompt. You can re-install Windows from there if the installation files are still on you hard drive. CD\ to the installation directory, and run 'setup'. You might 1st want to check to see if your old Win98 setup is recoverable. What happened to loose access to it? Sometimes all you need to do is run a Windows boot FDD, and then run scandisk. I also like keeping the Win98 installation files on a 2nd partition. That way I can run 'format c:', to start from a clean file syste, Matt _ Winterize your home with tips from MSN House Home. http://special.msn.com/home/warmhome.armx ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. [LIB] Help - 70CT won't access FDD or HDD
Date: Mon, 13 Jan 2003 18:38:28 +1300 From: John Pallister [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Help - 70CT won't access FDD or HDD Hi, I've just inherited a 70CT from a friend, who said I could keep it if I could un-wedge it. He's actually getting married next month, so I'm hoping to fix it up for him and give it back as his wedding present. ;) The problem is, it seems unwilling to access either the floppy or the (2.1GB) hard disk. Even the F12/BIOS upgrade procedure doesn't work; when I press a key, it will spin the floppy disk and then beep. When I boot it with no HDD in, it will ignore the Esc key (if pressed) and the FDD, sit there for a few minutes, and then say Insert system disk and press any key. While still completely ignoring the floppy drive. When it boots from the HDD, it tends to just sit there with the cursor flashing, which I gather means it's trying to de-hibernate, or something. This is independent of the relevant BIOS setting. If left long enough it will re-hibernate (with the associated animation), although I think I've persuaded it to stop that. The HDD boots (Win98 from a Win95 boot menu) fine on another PC. The BIOS is 6.30, but the HDD was born and bred in the Libretto, so I there shouldn't be any conflict there. I'd try flashing 6.20 (and/or 6.40), if it would let me. This behaviour is not completely repeatable; I'm sure I even got it to say NTLDR not found at one point... Other times it will sit there beeping for a while, or keep rebooting itself every few minutes... What else? There's no RAM expansion, upgraded thicker disks or anything else I've read about in the archives of this list that could be a problem (AFAIK). I'm not averse to obtaining another system board from somewhere (Hi, Martin!), but obviously if there is anything I can try, up to and including the old debugging by soldering iron tactic, I'd be very keen to hear people's suggestions. Any ideas? However, the card did not seem to be detected on my L100CT running Win98 SE at all! However, when I inserted it into my Sony Vaio PIII 700Mhz laptop (running XP (Xtra Problems...) I know the i386 directory is the guts of Windows 2k, but I have no clue as to how its suppose to sit on the Libretto harddrive and be automatically detected. Could I just make the Lib HD primary on my desktop and setup Windows 2000 from there? Would that make sense...? I haven't installed Win2K, but I'd guess it'd install like Win9x. After you copy the i386 installation directory to the HDD in the desktop, slap it in the Libretto and boot from a FDD with just the system files. At the C: prompt type 'CD\i386' (without quotes) and hit 'Enter' to get to the 'C:\i386' directory. Then it should just be a matter of typing 'setup' and hitting 'Enter' again. I'm guessing from Neil's post that Win2K has the video drivers for the 100/110 Librettos. Please help This is odd...but something we've seen before with IBM disks. You may have to search the archives, but I've seen two cases (on my machines) where pin-15 overclocking didn't work. Occasionally, the disc interface chip won't work at the higher bus speed, so no boot - but yours boots with the original tosh disk, so it doesn't look like that. The other problem is that some IBM disks won't work at the higher speed. If you use the IBM test disk that sometimes comes with them, you'll find it reports something like 'faulty cable'. Here's the fix that worked for me: clock the bus speed down to 50 by reconnecting pin 15, then increase the multiplier on the processor. It's a bit more complex to get to - I think the instructions are on Xin's site - but that should give you 100MHz on the processor. It's not as fast on i/o bound applications (disk, memory access is still at the old speed) but compute bound apps benefit (mpg replay etc) Neil ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. I'm suspicious of the drive itself. Remember, the PCMCIA floppy drive only works as a standard floppy drive on bootup. Once you've booted the OS, you need drivers to run it (regardless of the OS - Windows95, 98, NT, 2k, Linux, etc.). Is this necessarily so? My recollection is that 95 from a standard installation disk image uses the bios to address the floppy; though having loaded a 95 from the original toshiba floppies last week I was surprised to find that it too failed to see the floppy (which is, I submit, a bit rich!). I'm not inclined to experiment further because I just used 95 as a vehicle to get 98 and linux cd images on the HD for daughter's machine. Either way, checking that the Lib boots from the floppy, and can see the floppy if booted from the HD in dos mode (*not* a dos start from within windows) is a good first test. Again, it would be good if Ian could remove the HTML. My recollection is that 95 from a standard installation disk image uses the bios to address the floppy; though having loaded a 95 from the original toshiba floppies last week I was surprised to find that it too failed to see the floppy (which is, I submit, a bit rich!). Well firstly, the BIOS only treats the floppy as a standard floppy if it's seen on bootup (ie. you put the FDD in after bootup and without drivers it won't work anyway). Secondly, even if you boot with the floppy in, the moment that any program tries to initialize or query the PCMCIA slots AS PCMCIA slots (remember, the BIOS puts those slots into a 'weird' mode that lets the BIOS directly access the FDD), the BIOS lets go of the FDD. I found this out the hard way when I tried to do a floppy install of Linux but using a boot disk that enabled a PCMCIA CD-ROM drive (I had both the FDD and CD plugged in using the EPR). The moment it hit the code that initialized the PCMCIA slots (to access the CD-ROM drive), I lost FDD access ... I *think* I confirmed this in the list somewhere, otherwise it was on a website somewhere the location of which I've long since forgotten ... heh I'm not inclined to experiment further because I just used 95 as a vehicle to get 98 and linux cd images on the HD for daughter's machine. Wouldn't a drive converter be a lot easier/faster? Why would you need 95 first to get 98 onto there? Either way, checking that the Lib boots from the floppy, and can see the floppy if booted from the HD in dos mode (*not* a dos start from within windows) is a good first test. Definitely. Otherwise everything else we've said is irrelevant ... heh Make sure it's safe mode command prompt ... I don't know if CnC services are loaded on a standard command line boot. The boot from floppy test should give a definative answer anyway. Again, it would be good if Ian could remove the HTML. Well firstly, the BIOS only treats the floppy as a standard floppy if it's seen on bootup (ie. you put the FDD in after bootup and without drivers it That may be where I have seen it - perhaps I've always had the floppy plugged in when I needed it and booted in w95 :) Having said that, I'm pretty sure I never installed a driver under w95, while w98 was a nightmare if you got the wrong driver. I'd hazard a guess that *maybe* Win95 doesn't, by default, try to initialize the PCMCIA cards (I recall after install, having to double click on the PCMCIA icon in control panel to actually install the 32 bit access drivers). Perhaps until you do that, Win95 won't initialize PCMCIA on boot and hence won't knock the BIOS off it's special FDD access routines when in contrast, Win98 will initialize PCMCIA straight away? That may have been confirmed by me. What happens under linux is that the first load of the floppy is via the bios. Thereafter linux installs its own floppy drivers which bypass the bios, and lo and behold there ain't no floppy there... bugger! Hmm ... nah it was definitely the PCMCIA boot disk that killed it (at the specific point that it initialized the PCMCIA controller) ... it was happy when I used a standard boot disk (but then I had other unrelated problems). I'm not inclined to experiment further because I just used 95 as a vehicle to get 98 and linux cd images on the HD for daughter's machine. Wouldn't a drive converter be a lot easier/faster? Why would you need 95 first to get 98 onto there? I have so many drives (5) hanging off the desktop machine it wasn't worth the hassle of doing it that way - windows gets unhappy with too many drives, it seems, and throws major wobblies. Does it? Win98SE/WinNT/Win2k seemed quite happy in my old machine (2 RAID arrays of 2 drives each, 2 CD-ROM drives, 2 extra hard drives plus parallel zip drive plus numerous mapped drives ;-) Why don't you just temporarily replace one drive with the libby (just long enough to do the file copy)? So, having a big heap of floppies, I copied them to the disk, Good lord! How long did *that* take?!?! then installed from the hd, then (the cd rom being recognised in the pcmcia) copied the w98 and linux cd to the hd, then loaded w98, then loaded linux - which has sensible drivers and recognises the pc network card - Gee you had more luck that I did! Linux was a headache to get working (including 2 kernel recompiles) just to get PCMCIA and networking ... and I still haven't really got my FDD working properly yet ... not that I tried very hard since ... hehe On and this is RH6.2 ... does Mandrake have better support (not that I can be bothered reinstalling it)? so I could get the windows drivers from the net... there have to be easier ways, but now daughter has a dual boot mandrake/w98 machine that works on our local network. (I missed out the bit where I loaded W2k and then took it off again) Hehe ... off floppies again I presume? ;-) - Raymond --- /~\ | | Does fuzzy logic tickle?| | ___ | My HDD has no reverse. The best option I found on the lib50/70 was Mandrake 7.1 - anything later needs too much memory to load, though it will work if you jump through hoops with another machine, the later kde is so slow it's not worth the effort. Boot from a floppy, install from the hard drive. Never bothered with the floppy, I use it so rarely. Hi Neil=0D =0D I have just tried starting it using F8 no joy I get not ready message.=0D =0D The Floppy / CD tries to start ie you get an initial noise from them then they stop.=0D =0D Ian How about the boot? I'm suspicious of the drive itself. Remember, the PCMCIA floppy drive only works as a standard floppy drive on bootup. Once you've booted the OS, you need drivers to run it (regardless of the OS - Windows95, 98, NT, 2k, Linux, etc.). Look through www.toshiba.com for drivers. Another thing is that if you loaded Windows 95 on a *different* laptop, it may have misconfigured the PCMCIA controller to start with. Go into hardware settings and delete the entries for the PCMCIA controller then reboot, get Windows to redetect then get it to reinstall the 32 bit drivers (do this by double clicking on the PCMCIA entry in Control Panel after you've reinstalled the drivers). I can't remember if the 50 needs it's own PCMCIA drivers, cruise around the toshiba website and see if you find any anyway. Finally, if you partitioned the hard drive (less than 8 gig) in another computer, be aware that should the laptop hibernate, it may destroy data in the upper portion of the hard drive as the other computer is unlikely to have reserved that space for hibernation data. Use a program such as Ranish Partition Manager or Partition Magic to resize the partition (leave about 50MB of free space at the very end of the drive) to get around this. [LIB] Help!!! on my Libretto 50CT batteries
Date: Thu, 07 Nov 2002 15:03:17 +0800 From: RAUL A. JAVIER M.D. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: HELP!! on my Libretto 50CT battery Hi! I have a Libretto 50CT whose battery went dead 5 days ago. I was able to buy 2nd hand(refurbished) batteries from a previous Libretto 70CT owner whose unit conked out after a 4 feet drop. I tried the 70CT batteries on my unit and turned it on and it worked just fine!! Happily I went home, and cleaned the 3 batteries I bought. However, while wiping it and on close inspection, I found on the inscriptions on the battery, the following message!! Caution Do not dispose of in fire...Do not directly connect(short circuit)Do not use other battery chargers..Do not use with Libretto 50CT Whoa!!! What happened..!! Stupid meI didn't read closely while buying it. The Model No. of the battery I bought is PA2452U DC 10.8V 1200 mAh... So what is wrong here...?? how come I cannot use this battery on my 50CT? It fits fine, it has the same voltage, it has the same ampere rating...I am sure Toshiba didn't put these inscriptions by mistake...It was there for a reason... FYI, I was previously using an extended battery(the battery that conked out). The part no. of that battery is PA2498U DC 10.8V 2400 mAh. I tried to do a little research on the net, but it seems the 50CT and 70CT batteries can be interchanged, (sites I checked are http://www.impactcomputers.com/toshiba-libretto-50ct-parts.html and others) But one site says, http://www.synack.net/libretto/#faq_bat you can't interchage batteries. So can anyone help me decide which of the two sites above is correct?? Can anyone also give me information why I can't make use of these batteries??? Will it destroy my unit if I insist on using it??(But of course, I didn't even try to put it again on my unit after reading the inscriptions on the battery) Will it explode or anything like that...?? I don't know if I can return these batteries again, but if I can't REALLY use these on my unit and need should be then I guess I will have to ask that guy I bought these from, really nice... and hope he gives me back my money Thanks to all!! oly ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. [LIB] HELP! I need a floppy drive!
Date: Fri, 30 Aug 2002 14:04:02 -0400 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?=B7TechnoDragon=B7?= [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: HELP! I need a floppy drive! Well, I sold my libretto on ebay. (only reason why I didn't advertise it here is that someone bought it 6 hours after listing it) I was removing the linux partition and making a single fat32 partition to span the whole drive when after fixing it, the boot sector somehow got fubared. The thing won't boot because the boot code is damaged, but the partition table is just fine. I have to boot from some other device to fdisk /mbr it, or otherwise fix teh boot sector. But I have no floppy for my libretto, it never came with one. Is there anyone out there in the Seattle area who will let me use their drive for a few minutes? We could meet somewhere and I'll buy you a hamburger at McD's or a burrito at Taco Bell or something for your troubles. I have even tried removign teh drive and installing it into my desktop system, it reads just fine, but I cannot write to the boot sector of the drive. It gives errors indicating that the electronics won't let me write to it. I ran other tests and sector 0 is /not/ bad. If anyone has a solution, please inform me immediately. PS, I'll soon be selling a 640x480 libretto 20 - 70 lcd screen. It has a bad chip on it, but the glass is uncracked. Mix some parts from a cracked screen, and you have a replacement at a fraction of teh cost. If fact, the boards may be able to just be completely removed and swapped around, no soldering required. Do you have 'virus protection' or 'mbr protection' enabled in the BIOS? Some BIOS's by default lock out the MBR so its read only (on the premise that you rarely need to write to it and when you do, you go into the BIOS to disable the protection temporarily whilst you do it). - Raymond --- /~\ | | Does fuzzy logic tickle?| | ___ | My HDD has no reverse.
