[LUTE] Re: The lute list is retiring soon
Thank you so much Wayne. Both lute list and your webpage have been a great help for me. I discovered your webpage as a new emigrant to Canada in nineties. I could not take my lute tabulatures from Poland: they were too heavy, and there were a lot of side trips along the way. I just had my basic bagpack, lute and guitar. So music on your webpage was just like heaven for me. A reeally *BIG* thank you also from my side, Wayne. Thanks Wayne for all your energies and efforts in running these sites. It is really appreciated! On a personal note, I'd like to express a particular appreciation for the TAB software which sits within, and dovetails to my own open source lute tabulature software LuteScribe. TAB source is in github, so should remain accessible for many years to come. Possibly the email list could be migrated to a Google group (free) - they are quite easy to set up, but do need an admin to occasionally free up a blocked message and to admit new users (or it could be auto-join). As previously mentioned, there is an archive of the current list already here: https://www.mail-archive.com/lute@cs.dartmouth.edu/ To my mind the pages about TAB and the downloadable music archive associated with it is of great importance and should also be preserved. Your are getting old:) I am probably one of the oldest members on the list - regarding membership, not my age :) Arto must have joined before me, Caroline Usher used to be very active and the older members will remember those wonderful flame wars between Arthur Ness and a certain person whose name I will not tell you - he has died 1 or 2 years ago. I think he was the only member that was expelled from the list. 20 years ago the was much higher traffic but loosing the list would be horrible. By the way, Wayne, what will become of the updates for tab. Regarding the mailing list we might have a simple free solution. The newsgroup rec.music.early still exists and there is almost no traffic. There are free newsgroup servers with mild limitations. For example nntp.aioe.org does not allow more than 40 [forty] postings per day from the same IP address. This should be enough for everybody - even Tristan :) I have posted a test message a few minutes ago and it appeared a few seconds later. Configuring a mail client for newsgroups is very easy and takes a few seconds. Of course, non-lute readers of rec.music.early might complain. However, the last postings were: Download Solution Manual Fundamentals of Gas Dynamics (apparently the wrong newsgroup) 4 postings "Francesco da Milano: Ness 28 = Chiesa number?" this would fit our list 1 posting regarding recorders. 1 test posting by a certain Rainer Since apparently there are less than 3 [three] postings per month I don't think capturing the list would cause severe problems. For people who have no experience with newsgroups: You do not have to register. They are not monitored (depending on server and list) Attachments are not allowed (at least not on this list) What do the "expert" think? Dear Wayne, I would also like to chime in and express my gratitude for your generous activity. I learned quite a lot on this list, and as an extra bonus I could also improve my English by reading and writing about topics I love. Thank you and best wishes for your retirement! Stephan Am 22. Dear Wayne, Sad news indeed - I wonder if one of the national lute societies might host the site? - it is a wonderful facility and it would be a great shame for it to be lost. Dear Daniel, It would indeed be very good if you could at least host the archive and thank you for the Ning site - this can be a substitute if the Lute list cannot be saved in its present (or similar) form by some kind person - or persons. regards Martyn On Sunday, 23 August 2020, 00:10:30 BST, Daniel Shoskes wrote: 1) I add to the chorus of thanks and well wishing. [LUTE] Re: The lute list is retiring soon
I think I joined about '99 or so and I've watched this list become extremely important to the lute community. We've bounced so many ideas and facts across the world and we could always rely on this trusted, neutral forum, unhindered by outside social corporations. Personally, I've met a lot of people--respectable people, at that!--and learned a lot about lute music, players, history, and . . . us. And, bonus, I found a great lute on your lutes-for-sale page! Thank you, Wayne, for your vision, persistence and work which has allowed _this_ community to thrive. I would like to thank your all for your kind thoughts! I will miss the lute list myself. Danny - the lute list archives at https://www.mail-archive.com/lute@cs.dartmouth.edu/ have no connection to me or my computers, except that the mail list robot sends a copy of each posting there. The archives there will stay as long as the mail-archive people keep them. There are also archives that I keep at https://home.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-old/archives/index.html which will go away. These archives are large files with many posts in each, suitable for downloading to your own computer and searching. Some people consider that fact that this list does not accept attachments a plus! Hi Wayne. Thank you for the message, and thank you for giving us many years of service through the lute list. If it started as you said in 1998, that is 22 years. It seems much longer to me. The service you provided has been so meaningful in connecting lute scholars, players, and builders. I have made many lasting friendships and have been so thankful for all the information presented. Through this list, there has been such a great deal of generosity in sharing information, resources, and ideas. It has made so many connections for us all. Congratulations on your retirement, and thank you for your selfless commitment to us all. Oh that's too bad.. especially for the lute page...any way the page can be hosted sonewhere else ? I used to host on my own servers at home..but it became too difficult with staying up to date with security... Anyone have any free space somewhere? Wayne-- As a retiree myself, I can honestly say "Congratulations!" on your your retirement. Enjoy every minute! And kudos on the Lute List you put together. With input from so many sources, on so many pertinent topics, the list has been a great learning experience. A fine forum/community of musicians. More kudos on the TAB program, which I love to use, and will continue to do so. Thank you for all of it! Bravo, Wayne! I've gotten the list for years--it's time! It has been very much appreciated (except for the times that I get mad...!) Dear Wayne, what sad news, I'm shocked. Having been a member since just before the NY tower terror, and have enjoyed immensly beeing able to communicate with this wonderful community that you enabled, I really hope that the lute list will continue in one way or another after you, because it has been such an incredible resource for all of us. I want to thank you FTBOMH for all these years, and all the work and energy that you have put into it. In the "History of the lute" you will definitely figure as a most important contributor and innovator, not least for the TAB program and also for all the other lute related activities. All things must pass, I wish they had lasted longer but I'm sure that the whole list will agree in sending you the best possible wishes and good luck, for what you will use your time for next, and hope that it will hopefully be lute related. Thank you for these wonderful years Wayne and all the best of luck! G. -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
