Insert a command Before \documentclass
I want to use the package fix-cm.
In the manual it is stressed that one should load the
packagebefore\documentclass, and use the command\RequirePackageto do so, rather
than the normal\usepackage:
\RequirePackage{fix-cm}
\documentclass ...
Any idea how I can do this in LyX?--

If you do double display (e.g. connect your computer to a projector) then you can see on the laptop monitor your notes for the presentation together with a timer and a thumbnail of the next slide. Click View->Message Pane A pane with all the actions placed on LyX is now visible. Do your action (export ps2pdf or whatever) and watch for what the message pane says. Now go to preferences->shortcuts click new shortcut In function field, write exactly the action you see in the message pane. Now bind a key board shortcut to it. How to modify tables with InsetLayout
In the help file "Customizing LyX: Features for the Advanced User", section 5.3.10, it is said that by using an "InsertLayout table" one can modify this pre-existing inset. I am curious to know what changes can I make to tables? Looks like tables are set-up using the many buttons of the gui. I created a style in my local layout that has "LatexType Command".
Is it possible to allow the user to insert multiple lines of text inside this
command?
Something like the option MultiPar 1 (which is good only for InsetLayout Flex,
not for Style.)
What I want is to get the following Latex code:

hyperlink without a prefix
This is a follow up to a question on Latex.org:

I want to create a phone call link in my pdf, so the latex code would be
\href{tel:+1202999}{+1--202--999--}
But when I use the hyperlink inset in lyx the user most resort into one of
three categories:
- a webiste link starting with http://
- a mailto link
- a file link
Is there a way to overcome this and just do
\href{whatever is in the Target field}{the text}
?

Why a copy of my graphics file is created in the temporary directory
When I insert a graphics into my LyX document with the gui ("Insert>Include
graphics"), even when the graphics file is in the same root directory as the
lyx file, a copy of that file (with a different name, though; its new name is
`0_Users_username_long_path_to_file_myfile`) is created in the temporary
directory.
A look in the tex file that lyx creates in that temp dir also reveals the
following few lines right at its beginning:
\batchmode
\makeatletter
\def\input@path{{/Users/udi/Downloads/}}
\makeatother
Why is it?
On the other hand, when I include the graphics with ERT code, a copy of the
image file is not created in the temp dir, but the same tex code from above is
still there.
It's not a bug; Everything works fine, I just try to understand the way that
LyX works.

Document Setting "Synchronize with output" doesn't work
I tick the check-mark for "Synchronize with output" in Document Settings->Formats for my document, but no synctex.gz file is generated. The problem is on LyX 2.3.6.2, on macOS 12.1, and the line of code \synctex=-1 disappears from the preamble in code preview pane only when I tick a check mark on "Use Non Tex Fonts" setting. When I uncheck the check mark this line of code re appears. Why is it? Numbering of Float doesn't change
I am trying to define a margin figure in my document. The tufte book document class makes use of this environment. In the file tufte-book.layout the following is defined: Counter marginfigure End Float Type marginfigure GuiName MarginFigure Placement tbp AllowedPlacement none AllowsSideways 0 AllowsWide 0 Extension lof NumberWithin none Style plain ListName "List of Figures" ListCommand listoffigures IsPredefined true UsesFloatPkg false End But margin figure and figure have two separate numberings. Figure is counted within chapters (2.3 for the 3rd figure in chapter 2) but margin figure has its own counter (margin figure 1, margin figure 2, margin figure 3 without any relation to chapters or the other figures). Am I missing something? Does it work the same in your installation? My goal is to have the two floats share the same counter (figure 2.3, margin figure 2.4, figure 2.5 etc.). Define an additional InsetLayout for captions
I want to insert figures in the page margins in my book.
In order to have two figures one above the other, with each one having its own
caption and label, I want to create inside lyx the following latex code:

I copied to my layout the Float Style from tufte-book.layout. It defines a

I am now struggling a bit with the \subcaptionbox command:
1. I can define a new Caption which is based on "InsetLayout Caption:Standard"
found in the stdinsets.inc file. But I can't see it in the Insert menu, not
even inside Custom Insets.
2. Let's say I overcome this issue, is it possible to make it "sensible" only
inside the marginfigure environment?
3. If I don't want captions for the subfigures, then I don't need the
\subcaption command. And then the include graphics doesn't have to be wrapped
with {}. But if I change my mind and want a caption, then I do need the {}
around the figure. Any idea how to handle it nicely?

I am trying to see if LyX foreword search (through synctex) works on my windows 10. I have LyX 2.3.6 installed on windows 10. I have set up LyX so that Sumatra opens when compiling pdfs. But when I try to do "Navigate->Foreword search", the button is gray and inactive. Does anyone have an idea why? Is there a "convention" among you tex users to trigger the SyncTeX command for navigating the current view from the LyX cursor to its corresponding position in the pdf reader? A few words and then \cleardoublepage and the a few words. I select a word in LyX and go click Navigate->Foreword search and Skim is indeed raised but I can't see any red dot as the one seen in your screenshot. Thanks a lot. At the moment I am trying to get SyncTeX working on macOS. I don't have a folder with the name "bin" in "/Applications/LyX.app/Contents". I do have such folder in Program files in windows. I rather prefer Sumatra as the pdf viewer, not Okular. With the help of Stephan Witt and Udicoudco, I am now using Skim to open the pdf files produced by LyX. But I want to add SyncTeX to that. I configured LyX and Skim according to what is written in the wiki page (https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/SyncTeX) but I am not sure if everything is set up correctly or no, since I don't know how to initiate SyncTeX to work. I double clicked a word of text in Skim and nothing happened (no change of active window to LyX). How does one uses SyncTeX with skim? I don't export to tex and then to pdf, I said that just to clarify that .lyx is one type of a file extension, .tex is another one, and .pdf is yet another file.. How to update a template used by a team
I am writing a template to be used by my colleagues.
The template is mainly based on a module file that changes the WYSIWYG in the
lyx editor to look close enough to what you would see in the printed pdf file.
But, not all latex commands you can write in a module file.
For example, changing the page style with the fancyhdr package,
\pagestyle{fancy}
is a command that should be inserted as an ERT code somewhere in the lyx file.
I have sent over to one of my colleagues a beta version of this template, and
he started using it and inserted his own content in it.
But after improving the layout I understand that I need to place this command
somewhere else in a different position in the document.
So in order for the writer to line-up with this change, it has to be done
manually by him since this is not a command inserted by the module file. This
is an example for a minor change, and of course, I can send him an email
telling him what changes should be made, but this is not considered a smooth
and correct workflow.
Do you have any insight or idea how we can work better as a team?

How to achieve a simple element with LyXHTML
I am trying to remove the html attributes assigned by LyXHTML to the Standard
text inserted in the editor.
LyX's default is to render Standard as

appearing in the header.
What I want is to get the simple html code

Extend the visible area of the text
Is it possible to extend to the bottom of the visible area where one types the text? At least, a bit lower than just to the bottom of the text (LyX's default)? MS Word has a useful tool called "Show/Hide". According to the documentation (link at the bottom), "The Show/Hide ¶ button turns hidden characters like spaces, paragraph markers, or tab marks on and off." I am looking for a similar tool or feature in LyX. Can any one point it out for me? Add options to begin{enumerate}
The enumitem package allows the user to change the layout of the enumerate,
itemize and description environments.
The change takes effect in the following way:
\begin{enumerate}[⟨key⟩=⟨value⟩ syntax goes here] % <-- NEW
\item text...
\item etc.
\end{enumerate}
I want to insert such ERT code to my lists in LyX.
LyX allows the user to add such argument to each item, but this is not the same
thing.
As I see it, if I want to introduce such a change to my lists inside LyX, I
have to make a change to the Styles defined in the file stdlists.inc in the
layouts directory. Is that correct?--

Entering special charcter with keyboard shortcut
I want to insert with a keyboard shortcut a special character that I use a lot in my document. Until now it was saved in my system clipboard and I would just paste it wherever I wanted, but I want to use a keyboard shortcut for that. For example, I want to insert this symbol: № (Unicode U+2116 or in html). How can I do it? By the way, I just checked two other layout files that consist of only one argument for PageStyle: aa.layout (Astronomy & Astrophysics) and amsart.layout (American Mathematical Society (AMS) Article). The first should allow the user to use only page style "plain" and the latter only "Headers". What does Provides do?
I am trying to understand the effect of the class parameter Provides when inserted into a layout file. In the Customization manual, it says: Provides [string] [0 , 1] Whether the class already provides the feature string. A feature is in general the name of a package (e. g. amsmath or makeidx) or a macro (e. g. url or boldsymbol). See Appendix A for the list of features. What does it mean that a class provides a feature such as amssymb or xcolor? What changes should I see in the preamble of my tex file when including this command? And what about providing a macro. Effect of FontSize as a class parameter
What is the meaning of the class parameter FontSize when inserting it in a layout file inside ClassOptions? The customization manual says: FontSize [string="10|11|12"] The list of available font sizes for the document’s main font, separated by “|”. Does this command takes effect only inside the LyX editor? Can a layout file change the document language settings
I am writing a document in a non-English language. To take care of that, one can navigate to Document Settings->Language and choose the document language and language package in that menu (I know, those settings are saved in the header of lyx file). Either way, my question is: Can a new layout file that I write (let's call it myNewLayout.layout) which is later to be chosen as the document class in LyX, can make an effect on these two settings? It might be a bit unrelated to my question but I am very interested to know: I tried now to see what changes does ticking the mark on "Apply changes to current session only" do. I don't see any changes to the preferences file in my user directory and no additional commands appended to the header of my lyx file. In what file are those changes being listed? Settings file for lyx
Me and my colleagues are working on a multi-user project. Is there any way to guarantee that all of us have the same LyX settings? We can share screenshots of the settings window, but I prefer something more technical. I mean, the document settings are part of the file. But LyX settings definitely should not be the same for all users. Particularly, settings that are related to languages, font encoding and shortcuts, for example, could change if an expert user has made changes after the first installation. I was wondering if I can write down a file to be sent via email to my colleagues so can double-click and open it, and after running it they would have the same settings for LyX as me, the project manager. Change lyx use of tex system
I got two tex installations on my computer running Windows. One is TeX live 2021, the other is miktex. Is there any way to tell lyx which one to use? Or is it rather determined by the computer via the control panel PATH (in the Environmental Variables menu)? I haven't seen any menu in LyX that lets the user to choose such a thing, so I tend to think that you can only make such decisions from the system's control panel. How to include a bunch of tex commands globally
I have a big block of tex commands (about 80 lines in length) that set up
theorem environments using the amsthm and thmtools packages.
To this bunch of tex commands there is also a corresponding LyX module that
defines the theorems in the editor (paragraph styles, section 5.3.7 in the
customization manual).
I want to avoid this 80 lines code block in my document preamble. It clutters
the document structure.
Of course, one can insert the code block as it is inside this:
Preamble
⟨80 lines of code go here⟩
EndPreamble
But this adds the big code block right into my preamble, which, as I said, I
want to avoid.
The other option is to save the code block in a tex file (`myPreable.tex` for
example) and to load it into my document:
Preamble
\input{myPreamble}EndPreamble
But this means that the file `myPreamble.tex` must be located in the root
directory of the LyX project.
Is there any way to load the code block while it is located in the
"Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/layouts/" directory? I am about to
send this module file and all its accompanying files to a colleague, and I want
to spare him from the task of taking care which files go where.

1. The geometry package is not listed in Appendix A of the customization
manual, and I tried passing it to Requires but lyx doesn't add
\usepackage{geometry} to the preamble. It does so when I specify a package that
is indeed listed in the appendix.

module specification, should LyX add the \uspackage{} line to the preamble or
not?

Of course, I can do

But I prefer the \usepackage{}` command to be inserted automatically, just like

About the effect General text class parameters
I just selected for my document the IEEE Transactions layout (IEEEtran.layout).
In this file one can find the following content:
Sides 1
SecNumDepth 3
TocDepth3
I expected to see a change for the corresponding parameters in the Document
Settings dialog, but nothing changes:
The table of contents depth and section depth keeps to be just the same as used
by my settings for Document Defaults (chapters and onward is not included).
I also don't see the removal of "twoside" option for the document class: It
keeps to be
\documentclass[twoside]{article}
Should the statements of this kind (Sides, SecNumDepth, TocDepth) lock the
corresponding buttons and menus in the document settings?
If nothing changes or activates when I declare those styles, then what is the
point of them? Or perhaps I am missing anything here?--

I am having difficulties creating a Flex Inset that creates the following
command:

and
\marginnote{text}[arg]
Because sometimes the user needs to give the argument arg.

Hebrew document, numbers inside marginal note and footnote change to small font size
Consider the attached LyX file.
The document's language is Hebrew and the Language package is set to "None".
I inserted a marginal note and typed inside
```
א 1
```
For some reason, the latex code for the "1" is transformed into
```
{\small{} }{\beginL 1\endL}
```
Same happens with footnotes.
I noticed that changing the Language package to polyglossia removes the \beginL
and \endL.
Why is it?
How can I avoid the \beginL and \endL when using "None" as the Language
package, and also remove the \small{} change for the font size?
However, inside a caption, digits doesn't seem to change font size
I guess I need to amend the Inset Layout in the stdinsets.inc file for the
marginal note and the footnote, but I don't know what needs to be changed.

How to add Hebrew hyphenruls?
I am writing a document in Hebrew. Choosing "Hebrew" as the document's language
together with Language Package Automatic (and ticking "Use Non TeX font") adds
the following to the preamble:
\usepackage{polyglossia}
\setdefaultlanguage{hebrew}
\setotherlanguage{english}
(which is correct)
Now I want to add some Hebrew hyphenation rules. For that one should add after
the above three lines the rules as an hyphenrules environment, like the
following:
\begin{hyphenrules}{hebrew}
\hyphenation{או-פ-ט-י-מ-ליות}
\end{hyphenrules}
These kind of rules should appear after loading polyglossia.
How can I tell LyX about those hyphenrules? If I insert it to the document
preamble via the document settings dialogue, then the rules are called before
polyglossia and I get an error.
Any idea or suggestion for that?
The other thing I can do is to choose "None" in the Language package and just
type manually all the commands (use polyglossia, declare languages, state the
hyphen rules).
But that sort of misses the help LyX editor offers me - to type manually less
commands.--

I want to create a custom inset for the listings package.
The LaTeX command for displayed code should be as follows:

or

( Sometimes it is better to type the code inside $$ or !! instead of {} )
How can I tell lyx that ! or $ should be the command delimiters?

Why LyX formats digits as small font size
I have created a module that creates a custom inset for marginal paragraphs.
This inset is typed inside the Marginal Note inset.
When I type Hebrew text inside this inset, digits are converted to small font
size:
instead of 1, it is formatted as `{\small{}1}`. Why is it?

Thanks a lot. That's right. Modifying InsetLayout Marginal located in the
stdinsets.inc file indeed controls the presence or absence of "\protect".
The reason I want to get rid of it is because that without the protect, the
exported tex file looks more the way I would have typed in a text editor
outside of LyX.
From the TeX point of view, is there really a reason for the protect in this
case?

Compiling child document with bibliography
I am writing a book where each chapter is typed in a child document. The book contains citation from a bib file. I am following the instructions here (https://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/Multidoc#multipart-bib) and am pretty sure I created my branch correctly. I created a master file, inserted the bib database into it, created a branch, created a child document, activated the branch in this child doc, and also deativated the branch in the master doc. However, I now compile the first chapter and it seems that no information regarding the bib database is included in it. When I export this child document to a tex file, nothing related to biblatex is in the preamble. How can I print the cited work when compiling only this chapter? would need a minimal example. It would need to be a self-contained
document (your previous MWE had include commands for child documents not
attached to the message), preferably with as little customization as
possible. Every package you add, font or language change you make, etc.
makes it a bit less likely that someone on the list has all the packages
necessary to compile your MWE.
If by "unwanted formatting" you mean that you really want the LaTeX
commands entered in the order you used in your ERT, I doubt that is
possible without resorting to ERT.

I want to insert the following styled text to my document:
{\large{\textsl{Some text goes here}}
This is what a a LaTeX user would have inserted into his .tex file.
If I select my text in LyX and right click it and choose Text Style ->
Customized...
I can apply the aforementioned features, i.e. slanted shape and large size, but
the command LyX inserts is not the one above, but rather
\textsl{\large{}Some text goes here}{\large\par}
Is it possible to achieve what I first wrote, rather than inserting ERT
commands?--

Remove textquotedblplain from preamble
I noticed that LyX adds the following to my document preable:
LyX specific LaTeX commands.
\providecommand\textquotedblplain{%
\bgroup\addfontfeatures{Mapping=}\char34\egroup}
Where in the document settings or in the LyX preferences is the specific
setting that is related to the above? How do I remove it?--

LyX adds unwanted stuff into index entries
Please consider the attached .lyx file.
The file mainly consists of two index entries inserted via the Insert->Index
Entry button in the editor.
It is a MWE for a larger project to be compiled with XeLaTeX. The exported tex
commands are not as clean as they could be. Instead of the simple
`\index{Dirac, Paul}`,
I get
`\index{Dirac, Paul@\textenglish[variant=american]{Dirac, Paul}}`
or
`\textenglish[variant=american]{\index{Dirac, Paul}}`
The latter seems to be more correct, but I would like LyX to get those entries
cleaner.
Can anyone see the reason for this? Can I change it?
Of course, I can bypass: Create a new custom inset with the following inserted
into the layout:
InsetLayout Flex:index
LyXType custom
LabelString "Index"
LatexType Command
LatexName index
Decoration classic
End
But I prefer using the default LyX tools.
