When I did it near Atlanta at a Chevron station, it worked just like a credit
card.

I read a while back that Meijer was going to have Apple Pay at its pumps.

I saw one of those symbols two days ago at the Pilot in Simpsonville. I had
already inserted my credit card, so I didn’t get to try it, but I was wondering
how it would work in a situation where you haven’t actually purchased the
product yet and don’t know how much it’s going to cost. Can Apple Pay “suspend”
entering the amount until the purchase is completed?

We drove to Tampa last week and stopped for gas near Atlanta. I tried Apple Pay
at the pump. It didn’t do anything with my default (Discover) setting, but
worked when I switched to a different card.

This is the same as always happens at Subway, even though they take the
Discover card.

In zooming in this may be the radio frequency used by some Androids & some
credit cards. Not near as safe as NFC that Apple uses but we can’t use these.

Could be it’s in preparation but not yet activated. Could be the attendant
has to interact & hit the “credit” button inside. Both are wild guesses.
When I’m checking out at many places I have to tell the clerk to hit the
“credit” button, especially at Starbucks & Walgreens. At Meier the sale won’t
work even after I’ve used my ApplePay until the clerk pushes some button for
completion.

I would go in and ask what they want.

I pulled into a shell station to get gas. The pump had an applepay logo. I
pulled out my trusty iPhone, opened my wallet and put the phone next to the

John,

This doesn’t tell me how to do it. How does apple pay on my phone connect with
the site from which I am purchasing something.
Also I don’t have an Apple Watch or face recognition and my otterbox case won’t
let me use my fingerprint on my phone. I enter my pass code whenever I use
Applepay in the store.

[MacGroup] Apple Pay

2018-06-20 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I ran a bunch of errands today - 6 stops. I was able to use Apple Pay at all
but one stop.

These folks take Apple Pay:

Trader Joes
Paul’s Fruit Market
Mark’s Hallmark store in Gardiner Lane Shopping Center
Valu Mart
Keith’s Hardware

The one place I went that doesn’t take Apple Pay is Costco.

I always ask about it and this time the cashier told me Costco doesn’t take
Apple Pay because Apple attaches a fee to the transaction.

Don’t know if that’s true or not but thought I would pass it on.

I’ve been using ApplePay from my touch-bar Mac for several months. It has
a fingerprint reader on the right end of the touch-bar. It works well with
 Groupon.

Harry,

Sorry, I think of one thing at a time….ALSO, anyplace that uses “Square” can
normally take ApplePay, we have a local Coffee Shop that I pay with ApplePay
using Square, and there is a Toppit Pizza place that I pay using Square.

Harry,

Here is a good list for in store, on the Web and for giving to Charity…it’s not
complete as I just purchased from Tumi and it’s not on the list.

Re: [MacGroup] Apple Pay on a Dedktop

2017-11-27 Thread John Robinson
Harry,

ApplePay is offered on many sites, I’ve used it a dozen times…when checking out
there are choices of PayPal, the credit cards and if the firm has decided to
include ApplePay the Icon is included.

Clicking on it with a Laptop as Lee has then authentication is by Lee using his
fingerprint on the laptop, but if your on a regular keyboard as I was today
then I learned they access the Apple Watch and ask for me to authorize, if I
didn’t have the watch then I’m sure they would have ask me to approve through
the iPhone.

I still believe Apple will bring out a keyboard that has the fingerprint button
as Lee’s laptop does…a wild guess but until then it can still be done as I
discovered today.

[MacGroup] Apple Pay on a Dedktop

2017-11-27 Thread John Robinson

I’m like Johnny Appleseed, going round spreading ApplePay seeds….

Today I had my first experience using ApplePay from a desktop, normally I’m
using a mobile devise where I have the fingerprint authentication.

Today Tumi had a bag that will fit my equipment when going to the gym, it was
over 30% off, then another 10% for Cyber Monday…

At checkout I could use ApplePay but I was on a desktop, how was authentication
going to work?

I clicked on the ApplePay and Apple filled in all the particulars of the sale,
I didn’t have to type a thing….Then my Apple Watch started vibrating with an
arrow for me to double tap the bottom button, the one we use for ApplePay in
the store.

Once I did that then my debit card appeared, I could have switched to the
credit cards but I left on debit..

Soon the window on the monitor got a checkmark and the transaction was complete…

I felt Apple would put a fingerprint button on the keyboards for on-line
shopping, now I see for purchases this is not needed.

Cool, Ray-Ban glasses, open shirt and gold chain…I mean we’re hip for sure.

Your right, I love the open mouth response.

Thursday I ordered some items from Penny’s at checkout there was no ApplePay so
I canceled the order. The wanted me to call, which I did saying I wouldn’t
shop without AP.

Did the same with the company I buy my magnetic iPhone case, told them to get
the X case I would need AP, they wrote back saying they were going to adopt.

Wrote to Lexus this week saying my next car will have to have Apple Car play,
then naming other companies that offered. They wrote back saying they were
always listening to their customers needs & they were considering adding Car
Play.

You have to stay proactive.

Harry,

A note on speed….if you’ve used ApplePay you’ll instantly realize the speed of
NFC vs a chip card, there is no comparison, Apple is immensely quicker….well
with the Apple Watch 3 the speed is instant…I hardly get the Watch to the
reader and it’s over….possibly twice as fast, three times, as the original
watch…

Re: [MacGroup] Apple Pay question

2017-11-03 Thread John Robinson
Kroger does NOT accept ApplePay, I’ve been corresponding with their PR
department for months upon months…if they took ApplePay they would certainly
tell me. I’ve had a clerk tell me that one man held his phone next to the slot
where card’s are swiped…of course they didn’t know if it was Apple or
Android…I’ve tried but it didn’t work.

Cashiers only need to hit the “credit” button on their terminal, I’ve had to
instruct quite a few…but now so many know and if it’s a drive-in window they
have the portable terminal ready.

Re: [MacGroup] Apple Pay question

2017-11-03 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I was at Kroger on Goss Ave. yesterday. I asked if they took Apple Pay and was
told yes, but it doesn’t always work. And it didn’t. There were a lot of people
in line behind me, so I just used my credit card.

I have four cards in Apple Pay - all from different banks.

But I primarily use just one, because I get more money back for using it.

I’ll keep trying. Does the cashier have to do something before the card will be
accepted?

When we were in restaurants in Europe when it came time to pay the bill, the
waiter would bring a machine to the table. My card never left my site and Apple
Pay was taken everywhere!

Well, I understand they allow 1 phone call from the hokey!

At least if your standing in line & it doesn’t work you can quickly change to a
card that hasn’t been updated & then work on updating when you get home.

I have a Chase Debit, Chase Credit, Capital One, & State Farm cards that are
all ApplePay on my iPhone & Apple Watch so hopefully I’ll have one that would
work.

I’ve had times when it doesn’t work but that has been a problem with the
register. At Meijer the Watch nor the phone would work, a manager was called,
who transferred by purchases to another register & it worked perfectly.

you might need to remove the card, then add it again.

[MacGroup] Apple Pay question

2017-11-03 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I guess this question is for John,

One of my credit cards associated with Apple Pay has a new expiration date and
a new CVC code.

I don’t see any way to update the card within my Wallet. If I delete the card
and reenter the card with my new info I also delete my transaction history.

Is there any way to update the card without deleting it and deleting the
transaction history?

Or is there a way to export the transaction history?

Thanks.

Harry,

Collect the latest data on the use of ApplePay, use the dollar numbers, not
percentages…it’s something like 12% of Apple users avail themselves of the
service…UGH….then go to the firm and explain what it means to serve the Apple
consumer. I also use data showing what Apple User’s mean to a retailer vs the
Android folks…good grief, Android is miles ahead of Apple is number of units
but only a fraction of spending compared to the Apple User….let the firms know
this…Apple means sales, they don’t know this, even the large firms don’t
completely understand…thus if the Apple User’s would mount up and start using
this the stats would get EVERY vendor’s attention.

I doubt if ApplePay caused your problem in Europe for some reason those folks
are eager to adopt the service, it’s because your card company hadn’t done
their job….but I understand your wife’s fear…

Re: [MacGroup] apple pay

2017-10-09 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
John what is the explanation “in dollar terms” to use when I contact Costco?

BTW, I was in Europe the last three weeks and Apple Pay was accepted most
places HOWEVER, I used it when I first got there and the next time I tried to
use it the card was denied.

Previous to going to Europe my wife had contacted the credit card company,
twice, to let them know we were going to be in Europe but they hadn’t made note
of it. Well, we got it straightened out. BUT

My wife is “The Great Worrier” and she associated the card not working with my
use of Apple pay. To keep her happy, and much to my frustration, I didn’t use
Apple Pay in Europe.

When she gets like that, there is not stopping her from worrying and freaking
out. But it’s all good now.

John, Thanks for persisting with your Apple Pay rants. You got me using it.

Harry

It's called NFC (near field communication).

Totally different from either below. You have to hold the watch or phone close

And while you’re at it, Harry, why don’t you try sending me some money too?
$100 would do just fine, but if you want to send more, that’s okay too.

Harry, I’m doing the Happy Dance, and just to be sure it’s working correctly
once the new iOS is on our devices you might try sending me some money using
iMessage…I’ll gladly help you walk through this next phase…

Once you begin to use, you’ll not want to go back…Remember be mentioning that I
had purchased, through Amazon, an oil that is really helping with skin tone,
then I went to the firm directly and I was able to order using ApplePay, it was
fantastic…

Today I went back to the site and now ApplePay is gone…and I’m betting big that
it’s because the link to this firm in the first place was through Amazon…which
has forced them to remove ApplePay, Amazon wants our business and those firms
associated with them have to bow to their demands….

I’ve written to them telling them I had four items ready to check out and I
cancelled the order since ApplePay has been removed…I’m waiting for an answer,
which of course won’t be the actual reason…

If we all push hard enough a little noise can go a long way….

Thanks Harry, looking forward to your iMessage transfer..

You are truly the master of it.

[MacGroup] Apple Pay, Gaining ground

2016-02-14 Thread John Robinson

Draining the bank with Apple Pay, so much enjoyment paying with a Watch and
looking at the people around you…they realize there is a weird person going
through the line….

But what about ONLINE, I haven’t been able to use Apple Pay with an online
vendor…until last night….and of all places?

I had called them twice asking for them to accept Apple Pay.

I had written twice, and all replies were they didn’t have intentions of moving
that direction…well shucks…..

Then, an email, a notice that if you downloaded their App you could use Apple
Pay for your bills, be it the Credit Card or paying on your accounts….

Who is this place that was not interested? A large company? Listening to
their customers request?

STATE FARM, of all places, my employer.

So, I set up my bank with them online, and immediately went to the State Farm
App….AND NOW I can logon to my account using the fingerprint
authentication….SO MUCH easier than remembering and typing my logon and
password.

Once into my account all the policies are listed and the bills…pick the bill
you wish to pay. Click or type in the amount you wish to pay and hit the
Apple logo at the bottom which says “Apple Pay”…

Then it ask for my fingerprint and immediately the bill is paid….

I may be several decades into my allotted time but I still find this technology
fascinating and so much easier to use….within seconds State Farm sent an email
confirming my payment so now I have a record to attach to the file….

I guess it was a Valentines gift……

Apple Pay Coming Soon to Crate & Barrel, Chick-fil-A and Au Bon Pai

Thursday February 4, 2016 4:18 am PST by Tim Hardwick

Apple Pay is now available at more than 2 million retail locations, with
merchants such as Crate & Barrel, Chick-fil-A and Au Bon Pain set to accept the
system in stores imminently, reports The Business Times
.

Online clothing retailer Zappos.com also added Apple Pay to its iPhone and iPad
apps on Tuesday, following a number of requests from customers to use the
feature.

The announcement by Apple comes alongside news that the mobile payment service
exceeded the company's goal to make it available at 1.5 million locations by
the end of 2015. In-app purchases using the service also more than doubled in
the last six months of 2015 compared with the first half, says the company.

Apple Pay is set to expand to China

early this year, making it the fifth country to adopt the payments service
since its U.S. launch in October 2014. The service expanded to the United
Kingdom in July 2015
,
followed by Australia

 and Canada

last November in partnership with American Express. Hong Kong, Singapore and
Spain

are also expected to gain support later this year.

Re: [MacGroup] Apple Pay Version 2

2015-10-02 Thread John Robinson
Tom,

Finally had the account established at Chase, entered the card today in the
iPhone and linked to the Apple Watch.

Immediately went to Walgreen a couple doors from my office.

Checking out I held the watch to the reader and nothing, again and
again…finally the clerk said…oh, my problem I had to hit “payments”. The halo
around the top of the reader lit with several blue LED lights and once I tilted
the watch the transaction was in the blink of an eye…instantly it was complete.

A single use does not make for a well documented study but I wanted you to know
I hadn’t forgotten your question. Funny, when I walked away the lady in line
behind me ask the clerk…..what did he just do? The clerk said I paid for the
merchandise with my iPhone….well, maybe but this is so new no one knows what’s
going on.

I also went back to my old bank to change my account, I thought by not doing
any transactions, drawing it down to a bare minimum I might have fees….no, not
a one, but when I explained to the new branch manager (a young guy...should
have known about these things…and he uses and iPhone and iPad) WHY I was doing
this he didn’t have a clue what Apple Pay was. He listened with great interest
and said he was excited for himself and hopefully down the road for his bank.

It’s up to us to educate these folks and use the system like crazy to build our
brand and at the same time protect our security.

Thanks.
I went to Maui last week and tried the watch to pay at McDonald's,whole foods.
Didn't work. iPhone worked fine.
Anxious to see what your experience is.

For me it's been dependent on the terminal I'm using. Office Depot terminal
came up quick, Walgreens was slower.

The bank I am leaving had promised since January to have it but now they say
they don’t think many of their folks are interested in moving this direction.

Bummer, we Mac folks should be pushing our banking institutions to adapt the
Apple system, it’s by far the safest, everyone is kept out of the loop, the
merchant doesn’t know anything about us, Apple doesn’t know anything about the
transaction and of course the hacker, should he break into the store we just
left, will not even know we were there.

I guess we are not as “tech" in this area for in many parts of the country the
system is taking off like crazy….The University Of Oklahoma has gone Apple Pay
for the entire institution with another 700 colleges and Universities set to
establish the same for their folks.

We can make a difference we we make a little noise.

So, if your looking for a bank with Apple Pay, I use Simple. (This is not a
paid announcement)
I love Simple, they have eliminated all fees, it’s used straight from my
iPhone, I can go to any PNC bank and take money out and it costs me nothing.
Apple Pay works great. https://www.simple.com It’s
the first bank I am aware of that is derived straight from the iPhone. Cost me
nothing to join and I can link any other bank account I have with them. It’s
just been a great bank to use.

Chris,

They have a great website, they are a super youthful organization, and they
partner with a strong bank…I don’t know how comfortable this makes me. On the
link below are listed all the banks by assets, going down to bank number 6,357
with assets of only $3,535.00. This was as of 5/2015. I couldn’t find Simple
on the list, they did mention in their video they had 100,000 customers.

So glad to know they are there and I will watch them to see how it goes, love
they way they get to dress at work, what freedom.

I have been very happy with simple, I have been using them for close to two

will grow to be an even better bank in the future, their CEO seems to be pretty
top notch

Report: Contactless payments will grow by 100% in 2015
by Leena Rao @leenarao SEPTEMBER 7, 2015, 1:16 PM EDT

As Apple Pay grows, more shoppers are using contactless payments to
 purchase items in stores.
Thanks to Apple’s mobile payments push, Apple Pay, contactless payments
are on the rise, according to a new report issued from market researcher
 Juniper Research.

For background, contactless payments let shoppers wave their mobile phone
in front of a reader at the cash register to make a payment. Their credit
card is automatically billed without them having to take it out of their
wallet. Apple debuted Apple Pay last year to enable iOS devices to make
 contactless payments.

Apple APPL 0.00% CEO Tim Cook has said that Apple Pay will be accepted by
1.5 million locations in the U.S. by the end of 2015. During Apple’s
earnings call in January of this year, Cook revealed that Apple Pay made
up two out of three dollars spent on purchases using contactless payments
across the major credit card companies, including Visa, MasterCard, and
 American Express.

Juniper Research supports Cook’s data, and says that the number of mobile
wallets using contactless technology is expected to reach 200 million by
the end of 2016, up 100% from the end of 2014.

Whats more, the launch of Apple Pay has helped spur the growth in
contactless payments over the past year. Google GOOG 1.91% also debuted
its contactless mobile payments technology, Android Pay, earlier this year
and is expected to roll the service out broadly in the next few weeks.

The report also highlighted the weakness of rival contactless payments
technologies, including Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX), a mobile
payments system that is being developed by a group of merchants, such as
CVS, Target, Best Buy, and Walmart.

Called CurrentC, MCX’s technology allows retailers to have access to
valuable customer data from transactions. But CurrentC has had stumbles
along the way, including succumbing to a security hack, and a delayed
 rollout, according to Re/Code.

if you happen to bank there please do send them a missive about getting on
board.

I am unfortunately looking at moving my accounts to another bank that is.

if you can figure out how the UofL Foundation can get a kickback for going
Apple Pay so they can fork over more money to Jim Ramsey that might help get
banks here in town get on board. Just saying.

[MacGroup] Apple Pay

2015-09-15 Thread John Robinson
Today I went to Chase to open an account with them since they offer Apple Pay.

The account manager I talked with knew little about the benefits even though it
was Chase that worked with Apple to develop the system.

In fact, she said I was the first person in their bank to even ask about it!!

John
