RE: 64 bit processors
The only place you'd get an 8 core processor out of the box would be in a server. Re: some newbie mac questions
And I have some basic questions as well. Not the least of which include the scanning software (or is it hardware) Florian mentions. While I have been using a Mac more on than off for a year now, I still get stuck and end up going back to windows. Here are a couple of examples. 1. I need to know how to efficiently navigate calendar and addressbook. In calendar for example, when I do control shit t and then get my date I want to view entered, I hear nothing and when I vo right or left, I'm back to today's date. Also, entering appointments is weird for me because I haven't quite figured out how to know whether I'm on the month chooser, the day or the year, and then we add in the time. It doesn't seem to be consistent that one right arrow takes me to month, 2 to day, 3 to year and 4 to time. I use this feature a lot, since my appointments sync over the air with my iPhone and my other family members' calendars so any help would be amazing! I am still at a loss to efficiently navigate to a contact in addressbook. I'm at such a loss, in fact, I can't even tell you what I can't do, smile! 2. Occasionally I need to copy then paste things from a website, such as a recipe. I cannot consistently do this. Sometimes shift downarrow works and sometimes it does not. I would also love to know how to jump to the next block of unlinked text. In Window-Eyes, I simply press x which moves me by blocks of unlinked text. If, as a somewhat new user, I could make any suggestion to Apple, it would be to elaborate just a bit more in its command list. It's quite likely that the answers to my questions are there, but are worded such that I don't get it straight out of the gate. Thanks to any and all who can help, and I hope this first post is not too lengthy or too basic for this list. I am looking forward to learning and sharing with you all. Re: saving attachments in mail
I expect that you have headers disabled in your mail messages since that appears to be the recommendation of a few folks on this list. f this is th case I recommend the following based on memory... skype 5 beta
Hello listers. After looking on macrumors.com and finding out that Skype has released v5 beta 1, I immediately went and downloaded it. There are a lot of accessibility improvements. 1. contact statuses are now spoken [online, away, etc, etc]. 2. A lot more of the buttons are labeled. Thats all I've found in the 3 or so minutes I played with it. Please! Note!: the interface is a lot different and so you will have to relearn where everything is. Thanks. Once all the text is selected, press control option enter again and then command c to copy. I'm not real kean on that method and try to use control option shift C whenever possible. I would also love to know how to jump to the next block of unlinked text. In Window-Eyes, I simply press x which moves me by blocks of unlinked text. I had to look this one up. Turns out it is control option command p. For a complete list of html navigation commands, go to safari and press control option shift F. Then you can arrow down a menu with all of them listed. Re: Saving file directly to a folder
Hi Linda, I've answered all three of your questions below. Hopefully this clears up any confusion you may have. First question: When you wish to save to sub folders, I first suggest that you put your dialog either into List mode (cmd-2) or Column mode (cmd-3). Do this while the Save dialog is active then follow these steps: In List mode: 1. cmd-shift-s to bring up the Save dialog. 2. Enter a name for the file. 3. Press cmd-shift-h to bring focus to your Home folder. 4. Interact with the File Table. 5. Navigate down to the Documents folder or whatever folder you desire. 6. Press return. 7. Navigate to your desired folder and/or repeat step 6 if going even deeper. 8. Press return again and it will be saved in your desired location. In Column mode: 1. cmd-shift-s to bring up the Save dialog. 2. Enter a name for the file. 3. Press cmd-shift-h to bring focus to your Home folder, for example. 4. Interact with the File Browser. 5. Navigate down to the Documents folder or whatever folder you desire. 6. Navigate right then down again to your desired folder. 7. Repeat step 6 if going even deeper. 8. Press return again and it will be saved in your desired location. If the desired location is not within your Home folder you can use other keyboard shortcuts to quickly get closer. eg. cmd-shift-d for your Desktop. cmd-shift-i for your iDisk. cmd-shift c for listing all devices possible currently attached to your computer. Second question: I don't believe that it is possible to save one file to two different locations simultaneously unless you are set up on a network where Home syncing is configured. You'll just have to press save more than once to do what you're asking. Third question: the easiest way to put a message into the Drafts folder of Mail is simply to close your message window. Mail will either ask if you want it saved as a Draft or just do it automatically depending on whether it was previously a draft. Later... Is there a way to save it to a sub-folder? Also, if I have a file on the Desktop and the same file in my document folder, can editing changes to the one on the desktop be saved to the duplicate file at the same time? It appears that they can't be saved to both files at the same time. Last question for now. In Mail, I began a message and wanted to save it to my draft folder while I looked up something. I tried the tool bar save as draft button but it was dimmed. How do I do this? Many thanks to all of you who have helped me learn the Mac. hello folks, I just got the beta and I just have to say that this is quite a bit better. OK, the layout has changed, but it's a fairly logical layout. with the source list on the left and the contact list or conversation on the right (reminds me a bit of Itunes really). Also I saw they have command-option-h to hang up. So I'm guessing they also have one for picking up, well, I hope so at least. -- Ruud -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. The inconsistancy in the date and time control could be because it remembers where you left off. so, if you only set the month and the day for an appointment, when you get back to the date control it will still be on day instead of starting back at year. It's definitely not inconsistant so something in the logic of how these things work is off. I am still at a loss to efficiently navigate to a contact in addressbook. I'm at such a loss, in fact, I can't even tell you what I can't do, smile! This one is easy. Press vo I for the item chooser menu. You can then start typing. If you type the first few letters of any piece of info the item chooser will pull up everything that has that info. Typing lie will give you all the liebergs. Typing mar will give you all the marlenas and margarets and marys. Even if you have hundreds or thousands of contacts, the item chooser will still get you to the vcard you want in seconds. If you then want their work phone, go back to the item chooser and type work. If you want their home address go to the item chooser and type home. The item chooser may in fact be even more useful in calendar and address book than it is in safari, and that is really saying something. 2. Occasionally I need to copy then paste things from a website, such as a recipe. I cannot consistently do this. Sometimes shift downarrow works and sometimes it does not. There are two ways to do this. One, press control option shift C when you hear something you want to rip off of the webpage. This is the copy last phrase to clipboard option. It's pretty intuitive and will often scoop up large blocks of text for you without having to do anything. If that fails, press control option enter and then control option left and right arrows to select text word by word. Re: Handbreak
Hi Kimberly, To use Handbrake: Place the DVD in your drive. 2. DVD Player will most likely automatically open, just wait until it does then press cmd-q to Quit DVD Player. 3. Open the Handbrake app. It usually brings you to an Open dialog upon startup. 4. Press cmd-shift-c to bring up a list of devices attached to your computer. 5. Interact with the File Table and select the DVD. Press return. 6. Wait while Handbrake reads the info on the DVD. 7. I have Handbrake set to convert to Apple Universal which is within the Table of the Drawer. 8. I also have Handbrake set to save my files to the Desktop. You can set this by pressing the Browse button right after the Destination area of the Handbrake window. Once you've pressed Browse, just press cmd-shift-d to bring focus to the Desktop then Press return. 9. All you need to do is press cmd-s to Start the process after that. Things to note: • Next time you use Handrake, all you'll need to do is select the movie you wish to convert then once the Handbrake window is active, just press cmd-s to start the conversion process. • This takes quite a while with a commercial DVD, well over an hour usually. • Once the file has been converted, you'll need to bring it into iTunes in order to be transferred over to the iPad. • Just select the newly converted file on your Desktop, then press cmd-o to Open it. iTunes should open automatically and begin the import process. You can Interact with the LCD section of iTunes to determine when the import has completed. You can then go into the Movies portion of your Library and then locate the movie in your Movies Table. You can even rename and set other tag info by selecting the movie, then pressing cmd-i to bring up its Info. Select the Info tab and fix the name and such so it is better labeled. • Once all that is done the transfer can be done the next time you sync your iPad. • Some DVDs mess up the order of the scenes as a method of copy protection. If this does happen, you'll need sighted assistance to determine the proper title to actually convert. I or someone else can give instructions for that if you encounter this issue. HTH. Later... 2. Hope this helps. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionar...@googlegroups.com. Re: Skype 5 Beta and listening to voice mails
Yep. Found out something for those of you who use Audio Highjack Pro though. You might want to be aware that if you launch Audio Highjack Pro first then navigate to Skype session then press command+r to begin highjacking and recording the session, A problem reporter dialog will pop up that informs you that Audio Highjack Pro cannot Highjack Skype; but, if you press the restart button, it will take the second time. Since this is a beta for Skype, I rather expect that now would be the time to let Skype and Rogh Ameba know about this problem. The work around seems to be that you should launch Skype first, then, Audio Highjack. Once both apps are opened, you should then be able to navigate to the Skype session in Audio Highjack and press command+g to highjack or command+r to highjack and record without issues. Another thing I'm finding is that not all my sounds will play. This applies to custom sounds I created. Some will play but others will not. The spects for all files are the same, and therefore, there should be no issues there. One thing in addition I've found is that Skype will really compress volume very hard so that, if the party you're talking to goes in to another room, Skype will really push on their levels very hard in an effort to make that person audible. I love the new layout, and, the accessibility is really very much better than we had before. Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! Now A Very Proud and very happy Mac user!!! One more thing. IF you are on a missed event, and that event is that a person wants to contact you, and you decline, Skype will crash on you and you'll have to restart. voice mail retrieval in Skype 5 beta
Okay; seems that the way you retrieve voice mail in Skype 5 beta is, to me, a little confusing. From the source list, choose the number or name of the person who left the voice mail. Then, navigate to and interact with the HTML content frame, and eventually find a button that play/pauses the voice mail, another one that deletes it. It's do-able, but not obvious. • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: WorkAround for Truncated Braille Paragraphs on Web Pages
Hi Teresa, Thanks for reporting this. I know that Annie has speculated that the difficulties with long paragraphs that show up when reading books in the Stanza app with a Braille device are due to the app, but I think this is really down to a bug in the way that iOS 4.1 handles things for Braille devices (as you suggested in an earlier post). There are no problems of this sort when using Stanza with VoiceOver gestures, or controlled with a Bluetooth keyboard, and the fact that this problem crops up with other formats (such as certain web pages), points to its not being specific to Stanza. I hope you guys report this issue to Apple's accessibility team. Cheers, Esther On Nov 4, 2010, at 04:06, Teresa Cochran wrote: Hi, folk. This isn't a pretty work-around, but it works in Safari, Webkit, and Stanza, as far as I can tell. I use the Item Chooser (VO-i), and move down at the end of each paragraph. Yeh, I'm not really sure how to help with this. I'm sure I have the answer but not really how to communicate it. Hope this helps. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. To post to this

Re: Skype 5.0 Beta and conference calling
Hi! Well, I can find the button to do it by moving the horizontal slider to expose the call controls. Only thing is, it just seems to take you into the edit field of the chat with the person you're already in a call with. I'm assuming that it probably pops up, but we just can't see it. I'm interested to know if there is a workaround for this as well. Regards, Nic GoogleTalk: chojiro1...@gmail.com Facebook Twitter Skype: Kvalme MSN Messenger: nico...@home3.gvdnet.dk Yahoo! Re: skype 5 beta
Hi, Just one of my strange questions again. I downloaded the Skype beta 5 and noticed a very very strange thing. It no longer seems to be possible to have conference calls if you use Voiceover. Pressing the button add people or pressing its shortcut cmd+shift+a just moves me to an edit box. When i try seeing a list of possible people to add to the conference, nothing is shown, only the chat window which i don't want. Anyone got a clue about what's happening? I don't accept that you can't have a conference call if you use Voiceover. /Krister 4 nov 2010 kl. 16.46 skrev Matthew Campbell: Hello listers. Introduction
Hello. I have had quite a last few months. Apples everywhere! First, I got an iPhone in June. I wrote an article about it, which went viral: http://behindthecurtain.us/2010/06/12/my-first-week-with-the-iphone/ Since then I've appeared in such publications as the Atlantic and on CBC's weekly technology program Spark. I immediately fell in love with Apple again, since I actually started on an Apple II/E with an Echo II speech synthesizer, to anyone who remembers that. It still works, by the way. After I got an iPhone I got an iPad to check out the larger screen. I knew at some point I would get a Mac, and one day a month and a half ago I knew the time had come: http://behindthecurtain.us/2010/09/11/rejoining-the-apple-family/ I absolutely love my Mac. I got an iMac to do audio editing, but now just use it for everything of course. I also just got one of the beautiful brand new MacBook Air 11-inch models. Now I have the whole line! Unlike many, I actually come to the Mac from Linux, having ditched Windows years ago. I felt delighted to learn that a lot of my knowledge will not go to waste. I feel that Apple has brought the cutting edge to the blind, for example bringing the power of touchpad gestures to the desktop. I also appreciate the way it combines a clean interface on top of a Unix environment. I look forward to learning so much! The Apple Accessibility team contacted me because of my iPhone article, and recommended I join this list. I feel glad I did, I've already started learning things. Check out my blog and read about my adventures, including my most recent tale of getting a MobileMe account. No doubt I will have many more Apple tales! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: saving attachments in mail
Yah; I have had an iPhone and a MacBook Pro for about a year, but got stuck and didn't quite know where to turn. Recently, I got a MacAir instead of the Pro, as it is much lighter and has the same keyboard as the Pro. I got the 11 inch model, it is really sweet and easy for travel. I'm afraid I don't even know all the finder commands. I have been laboriously sledgehammering my way through all this with very few shortcuts, so some of my questions are very, and I do mean very basic! But learning about cmd-shift-c is amazingly wonderful! What does cmd-downarrow do in the save dialogue box? I'll stop thanking people for putting up with my questions, but I can't share enough how much I've appreciated this list and learned from it in just one day! Also, entering appointments is weird for me because I haven't quite figured out how to know whether I'm on the month chooser, the day or the year, and then we add in the time. It doesn't seem to be consistent that one right arrow takes me to month, 2 to day, 3 to year and 4 to time. Yeh, I'm not really sure how to help with this. I'm sure I have the answer but not really how to communicate it. 2. Once all the text is selected, press control option enter again and then command c to copy. I'm not real kean on that method and try to use control option shift C whenever possible. I

Re: some newbie mac questions - item chooser
Hi Marlaina, Here's another option for using Address Book. • Navigate to the Groups Table. 2. Select the first item, All contacts. 3. Stop Interacting With the Groups Table. 4. Navigate to the Names Table and Interact with it. 5. Press the first couple letters of the first name of the person you wish. 6. Stop Interacting With the Names Table. 7. Navigate right to the Contact Information Scroll area. If you simply wish to look at a contacts info, just Interact with that Scroll area and you can hear everything that you have regarding this contact. If you wish to edit this info in any fashion, do the following: 1. Navigate past the Scroll area until you hear Edit Card Unchecked Checkbox. 2. Check it with VO-space. 3. Navigate back to the Scroll area and Interact with it. You can now modify this card. Also, because that checkbox is now checked, if you choose another name from the Names Table, you could modify it as well. You could also use this method if you have a specific Group selected from the Groups Table. Note that if you edit the card when you're within a specific Group, it will also edit the card within the All Contacts area. HTH. Later... hi there are 2 ways to do this 1. find the add people button and type the whole/partial skype name of the person press down arrow note becareful that you only have one matching skype name or you may add the rong person 2. in the conversation chat box type the following /add skypename some times there will be a scroll area to the left of this field that you have to enteract with and find the persons name an click the menu and select call hth On Nov 4, 2010, at 4:09 PM, Nicolai Svendsen wrote: Hi! Re: some newbie mac questions
Hi, can't help you much with the calendar and address book, since I don't use those, but I can help with selecting text on a web page. Interact with the text, and move to where you want to start the selection. Press control option enter. Now move to the end of the text and press control option enter again, the text between the 2 points will be selected, you can then press command c to copy it. On Nov 4, 2010, at 10:12 AM, Marlaina Lieberg wrote: And I have some basic questions as well. Not the least of which include the scanning software (or is it hardware) Florian mentions. I'm sure I have the answer but not really how to communicate it. Re: some newbie mac questions - item chooser
Yes, I have auto fill turned on. What I was wanting to work on is more efficiently arriving at a contact name to phone them or share their phone number, etc. Thanks so much! Also if your happy with all the info in your address book you do not need to use it directly, if I understand one of the things you want to do is add names to a new message or to a message you want to forward! Both of these tasks can be done from within mail! If when in mail and you start a new message with the command [command+n] then use the command ]command+option+a] this will bring up your address panel and all you have to do is interact with the name table and choose the names you need! there are a couple of ways to do this! You can firstly just type the first few letters of the name you want then stop interacting and then scroll left to the [ to field] and just press vo+space bar and that name will be put in there for you and just repeat that to add any more names [ just for a few names only] secondly you can interact with the name table and if you have a lot of names that you want to use that are back to back with no other names in between them just go to the first of the names and hold down the shift key then without letting it up just go down the names with the down arrow until you get to the last name you want then release both shift and down arrow and vo should say something like 13 rows selected then like before stop interacting and scroll left to the [ to field] and just vo+space bar on that and all them names will be put in there for you! [ sorry this is so long :] ] There is also a way to select names that do not follow each other I can not remember it proply for now but I'll get back to you on this unless someone else does :] thirdly you have the option to have the names auto fill as you type them in your message headers [to field] this might be already on so set up a message and go to the ]to field] and interact with it and type a address you know and it should fill the whole thing for you if so and it is the one you want then just press return and then you can start typing another and if thats right then again press return and so on till your done! fill in subject field and message then send! are you still awake sorry! HTH. Later... Re: some newbie mac questions
Thanks Mike. When I tried interacting with text, I got a beep. So I thought perhaps somehow I was already interacting; I tried down arrow, vo right and vo down and all I got was beeping. The site on which I tried this is www.skinnytaste.com I wanted to copy the recipe I found on the first page. Thanks so much! To those i say : My apple journey is about to continue. I have ordered a macbook yesterday and am impatiently awaiting it's arrival. I have a couple of questions though. I've been reading this list fora while now, browsing the archives and trying to keep up with recent stuff as well. My first question concerns garage band. Are there things that still don't work after the update, or is everything accessible? Can you for example select a portion of a track now? Second is scanning. I read alot about the whole readiris and vuscan thing, is this still the way to go for scanning and OCR? Last one, and i'm sure this one has been asked a million times before: Is there a directory of apps that are accessible with voiceOver? And i don't mean the supported applications page on Apple.com, surely there are more :P Thanks for any help, Florian -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group.
