 All,

A new release of Microsoft Office 2016 is now available via the automatic
update if you have already downloaded it before.

Re: Creating a folder to burn from my Mac to a CD

2015-05-19 Thread Pamela Francis
Hello
Maybe I am misunderstanding my own question. I know you're answering me to the
best that I'm able to explain it.
I know it isn't hard, I'm just a little confused. I have an audiobook that was
broken up into chapters that are audio MP3 files.
I can work with it in iTunes on my Mac. However I need to put it into a format
that I can transfer to my Windows computer in order to use the software on my
Windows computer the book was written for. If my Windows machine sees it as a
data CD, will it come up as an audio file? The specific software is not
available for my mac, or I would use it with my Mac. There are no accessible
alternatives for my Mac. Therefore I need both the instructions and the
software on my Windows machine. I apologize if I made it more of this than it
was, however I am attempting to truly explain what I'm trying to get done. Need
to make both computers happy.
 Thanks Much

Re: subscribing to the list

Hi Chris and Walter. There's another step that you left out but you probably
don't know about this since this was just implemented. Once he sends the blank
email to macvisionaries+subscr...@googlegroups.com
 he will likely receive an
email from one of the admins or moderators of the list asking how he heard of
the list. This is so that possible spammers are prevented from joining the
list. When I chose to create an iCloud email account and transferred emails
from this list to it, I got an email from Chris Blouch asking me this question.

Re: Searching and selecting text in PDF documents

2015-05-19 Thread Nicholas Parsons
1. Navigate and interact with the toolbar, then navigate to the end of the
toolbar where there is a search field. Type text in there to be searched and
press return. Then stop interacting with the toolbar, and next to the PDF
content area will be a new scroll area. Interact with that scroll area and
you’ll find a table of search results. Once you have selected the search result
you want from the table, interact with the PDF content area and you’ll be on
the page and possibly even the line of the search result.

2. Selecting text has become trickier since OS X Yosemite. Not sure if it has
been fixed in the latest update. It used to be that the best way to select text
was to enter the VO selection mode using VO return, selecting the text you
wanted to highlight with normal VO navigation keys, and then press VO-return to
exit selection mode. You could then copy the highlighted text. However, if this
doesn’t work, as seems to be the case of late, I just use the VO-shift-c
command to copy the last phrase spoken by VoiceOver.

Hello Walter. I trust that this evening finds you well.

To subscribe, have your friend send a blank message to:

macvisionaries+subscr...@googlegroups.com

The plus sign in the above address was not a typo.

Leave the body and the message completely empty. Once this message is sent,
they will receive a confirmation e-mail back. Simply reply to this message
without changing anything. Literally, just hit reply, then immediately hit
send.

This will forward on their request to one of the administrators who then
will get them approved/added to the list.

Hope this helps.

one of the options will create burn folder. Once the folder is in place, open
it and you should see a burn button at the bottom of the folder, or possibly
the burn is in the file menu. And you’re all set. Your windows pc will just see
it like a data disk and you can copy etc.

Re: Office 2016: Sending Feedback On Found Bugs

2015-05-19 Thread Eileen

Hi George and Sean Again,

First, let me apologize to you Sean for misspelling your name. I have seen it
spelled 3 different ways 'now. I know this is slightly different then the
current subject line, but I'll post it anyways. Is the navigation in Word 2016
following the voiceover commands found in let's say Pages or TextEdit? Because
I have been a heavy PC user of the Office Suite products, I keep thinking that
the Office Suite on the Mac would react the same with similar keystroke
equivalents. So, what I mean is on the Office PC side, one could use ALT-H to
open the "Home" tab and then arrow down to access the ribbon. On the Mac, the
ALT key is the Option key, so would this logic work? I just closed out Word
2016, so I can't test that. I have an idea that the answer is no. That's why I
posed my question at the top of this post in order for me to begin to rethink
the whole Navigation process in Office on the Mac.

Thanks for my rambling and reading this.

Best,
Eileen

Creating a folder to burn from my Mac to a CD

2015-05-19 Thread Pamela Francis
Hello everyone,
This may have been discussed previously, however I need some easy steps for
creating a burn folder on my mac comprised of MP3 files from an audiobook that
deals with the program I will ultimately use in windows. I need the CD to be
able to transfer to my Windows machine in order to play it, then use the steps
it gives me. As it is, the book was sent to me as a zip file in my email. I am
currently able to pull it up in iTunes on my Mac. The software it discusses is
not available for my mac, or I would use it that way. I'm certainly not
attempting to make a mountain from a molehill just need to know how to do this
in order to make both computers happy.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.
Best regards,

Pam Francis

Re: Office 2016: Sending Feedback On Found Bugs

2015-05-19 Thread Eileen
Hi George, and shawn,

Thanks for suggesting to check the ribbon. I need to get use to the Mac way of
doing things and where or how to access them. I found the "Help Improve Office"
tab next to my "Developer" tab. and used a VO-SPACE on it. I'm now going to
explore all of the tabs and see if I can solve some of it, if that's possible
and will definitely send my findings to MS.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

Cheers,

Hey Jeff,
I am unsure about your second question, but your first one I believe I can
answer.
Find a .rar file that you want to tell the app to use.
Now press command I. Interact with the scroll area.
You want to look for the "Open with" discloser triangle. It may be collapsed.
Expand it with VO backsplash. Now choose stuffit expander from the popup button.
VO right and find the the following. Use this application to open all documents
like this one. Now you want to find the "change all" button and VO space on it.
God bless.

Hello,

First, I want to say that I did open the help menu hoping to find a support or
send feedback button, but that option was not listed. That's why I posted on
the list. I know this was discussed before, but I have misplaced the info on
that email address.

Secondly, here are some of the items that I guess I'm calling bugs or are not
accessible with VO.

1. I typed a few misspelled words in a doc. The spell checker is better than
before, but when I open it VO annnounces "image," which gives me no idea on
which word is not spelled right. Only when I tab over to the suggestions table
do I know the word in question.
2. I created a table of 3 rows and 3 columns, but I can't do much more than
have VO read this to me. There is no grid to navigate in or out of a cell. I
know that there was another recent post on accessing tables, so I won't discuss
this one further.
3. I use bullets in my docs from time to time. I could access the
bulleted/numbers dialog and select the bullet type I wanted to use. However,
when back in a doc and creating my list, I couldn't tell if the bullets were
placed infront of the text where I wanted it to be. This is something that one
has access to in Word 2010 or 2013 with the Pc screen readers of choice.
4. When creating instructional materials for work, I use either 3-4 different
heading styles. I did open the styles dialog and tabbed over to the list table.
When I interacted with the table, I only had 7 choices and heading 1-2-3-4 were
not in the choices. In previous Office 2016 Preview, I could at least scroll
through many rows, but find these options. There isn't a simple solution like
on the Windows side in Office 2010 or 2013 where one can use a Windows
keystroke to add the various heading levels. Maybe someone else can chime in on
this one, but it shouldn't be so lavorious to do these attribute changes.

Sorry for the long post, but you wanted to know my experience with the new
update. I finally got frustrated enough and closed Word 2016 and performed my
tasks with Word 2010 where everything works. :)

Re: Office 2016: Sending Feedback On Found Bugs

2015-05-19 Thread Eileen

Thanks Eileen,
Yeah, I saw tat link. It looks good. I guess there are no mac tutorials yet
for the office products as they have recently become accessible. But I guess I
would be able to transfer windows instructions to the mac.

Re: microsoft office question

2015-05-19 Thread Eileen
Hello,

So do you want tutorials that are Mac based to learn the Office Suite products?
On the Windows side, I can't recommend more CathyAnne Merthers tutorials. In my
opinion, they are the best for the PC side. the link to her website is:

www.blindtraining.com

The tutorials are not inexpensive, but it has gotten me up and running quickly,
especially when Win 8.1 was released and using Office 2013 when it was
installed on BootCamp on my MacBook Air. HTH.

Re: Good monitor and keyboard for the mac

2015-05-19 Thread Alex Hall
The monitor never went anywhere, but yes, I did take the keyboard a few
different places. It was $12 though, so even if it had broken, I could have
replaced it easily enough. Ultimately, the desire to travel with a Mac led me
to switch to the Macbook, and I'm far happier overall. Sure, I miss all the
ports of the Mini, but the laptops are portable and way more compact, plus
offer the multi-touch trackpad and a mic/webcam.

I personally have heard great things about the Logitech keyboards. You can

If you do any amount of typing I would suggest not going cheep on the
keyboard. On the other hand if these are Apple products you currently have
and you live close enough to an Apple store it does not hurt to bring then

WatchOS 1.0.1 Available

2015-05-19 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
For those who haven’t noticed yet, and own Apple Watch, WatchOS 1.0.1 is now
available. Use the Apple Watch app to install, from General, Software Update,
as usual. The process self-voices, in a nice iOS-like fashion, with an
updating progress bar. (But then, anything is an improvement over iTunes, eh?)

Security and bug fixes, including non-specific accessibility responsiveness
fixes.

microsoft office question

2015-05-19 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello all,
I am getting ready to start working on my master’s this fall, and I was
wondering if anyone knew of any good training resources for learning word,
excel, and powerpoint. In word, I have never been great with formatting and
making things look professional, and I would love to be able to get a good
handle on that before starting to write papers. I will be using the mac when
office 2016 becomes available. Right now, I am working with the preview, but I
would like to learn how to do some of this before classes start so I am not
fighting the software. Just would like to brush up on my office skills.
Thanks,
Brian

Hello All,

I know that this has been discussed before, but I have missed placed where I
need to send my feedback to (address) in regards to bugs that or features that
are not fixed or accessible to voiceover. I would appreciate it if someone
could post that email address. There are several items that I want to have MS

use voiceover.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Ensuring correct file was attached before sending, and determine attachment formats

2015-05-19 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Christine. It attaches. It does not go into the email. VoiceOver says image,
but everybody gets my attachments just fine, and it sends the file. Also, in
the Sent folder, it says the name of the file. It works great, and the only
thing I wish it differently was to say the name of the file. It did in
Mavericks, but not in Yosemite. However, I used to have blank files sent in
Mavericks, but have never had a problem in Yosemite with that.

Re: ot: subscribe to group digest

2015-05-19 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
It's in the My Settings popup which is about nine tab stops from the
Search field at the top of the page. Once there hit space to activate
the menu then down arrow to Membership and Email Settings. In that
dialog the 4th tab stop is email delivery preferences. If you hit space
on that you can down arrow to either Send Daily Summaries (what most
people call digest mode) or Send Combined Updates which will email every
time there are 25 messages. Currently we average about 41 messages a
day. After you pick then save your settings and you should be all set.

Searching and selecting text in PDF documents

2015-05-19 Thread Jason White
What’s the most effective way to
1. Search a PDF document for specified text, and
2. Select some text for copying to the clipboard from within a PDF document?

So far as I have been able to find out, tagged PDF (recognition of headings,
paragraphs, lists, tables and other structures preserved in tagged PDF files)
is still not supported by Preview.

Suggestions are welcome. I’ve tried Ctrl-Option-F, but it doesn’t appear to
search the entire document. Obviously, structural navigation would be helpful
but, as I mentioned above, doesn’t appear to be supported yet.

Also, what good GPS apps are available for the mac?

I had a Mac Mini for years (still do, but the drive is shot). I hooked up a $12
USB keyboard from Wal-Mart, and a monitor we'd had for at least five years from
Dell, and it worked just fine. Apple computers don't need apple peripherals,
but the Apple stuff tends to last longer and look better. Of course, my $12
keyboard is still going strong, even if it isn't very comfortable.

Hi Nick
It's been a long time ago since I got this message from Greg, so I will see if
I can find it sometime soon. I seem to remember it has to do with going into
the tools menu. I know that what happens in that situation is that the program
names the fields field one for you too, and that's what voiceover calls them.
Then he said the side of person would go into the tools menu to find the place
to rename the form fields

2015-05-19 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Kristi
I have the same problem and so far is getting Yosemite to save the file when I
attach it. However I do my attachments with finder, so I don't have the
problem. What I do is in finder, I select the file I want and copy it to the
clipboard like I'm going to move the file or paste. Then when I open my new
message to write it, the first thing I do is press command v to paste it. In
this way, I have not had the problem of putting in the wrong file and to my
email.

its trying to play the file. Any idea how I can fix this?
2 Since my re-install of OSX my Canon scanner is no longer recognized

Re: Good monitor and keyboard for the mac

2015-05-19 Thread Jonathan C Cohn
I personally have heard great things about the Logitech keyboards. You can
actually pretty much use any USB keyboard, the primary difference between Mac
and Windows keyboards in the US is that the command and option keys by default
are reversed in order. This can be created in System Preferences.

If you do any amount of typing I would suggest not going cheep on the keyboard.
On the other hand if these are Apple products you currently have and you live
close enough to an Apple store it does not hurt to bring then in for a Genius
look. Apple gives free evaluations of issues.

Re: Secure USB Drive

2015-05-19 Thread Marshall Scott
Hi, Tracy,
if you really want security on a USB drive, you should check out the hardware
encrypted USB drives. I use Kingston drives and they are accessible on OS X
and Windows 7. The advantage is that these drives require a password to mount
the drives. The disadvantage is that if you forget your password, there is no
way to recover your data. And,if someone tries to guess your password, the
drive is erased after a number of times.
Also, TrueCrypt is no longer being developed/supported.

Re: Microsoft Office for Mac 2016 Preview | Accessibility of Tables in MS Word

2015-05-19 Thread Sean Murphy
I have already reported this as a bug to Ms. Tables are worse in the latest
release. I need to try Andy suggestion but you shouldn’t have to do this.

Also there is navigation problems with documents if you scroll up by line by
line when in print view mode. Sometimes you cannot move to the next page and
other times you can. If you are in draft mode you do not get this issue.

A lot more to test here.

Re: Introduction and a couple of questions.

2015-05-19 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hi Gary

Welcome to this list!

I actually use the preview pain in Mail to read my messages. All you do is
highlight a message, vo-right until you either hear the message headers such as
from and to or the message content itself. Then vo-shift-down arrow to
interact. You may then have to VO-right arrow until you hear what sounds like
the message content. Note if you land on the first message, you can't always
read using standard arrow keys. But if you press delete and the next message is
displayed, you can read with standard arrow keys. By "standard" I mean without
VO keys.

Just another option to explore besides what has been offered already.

Re: Microsoft Office for Mac 2016 Preview | Accessibility of Tables in MS Word

2015-05-19 Thread Andrew Lamanche
The way I dealt with tables was to resave the same document but in the doc with
macros format, .docm. I've not seen this format before but it is there in the
pop up button for the format of the documents. Then you should be able to
interact with the tables. You won't even have to interact with it, VoiceOver
will automatically do this and then you can use tab or just arrow keys to move
round in the table.

This is how it was in the previous version of the Word preview, I've not tried
this in the latest update.
