Somehow the volume on calls is at 0. Does anyone know how to turn it up? I
double tapped the screen and then flicked up but it remained at 0.

Hi,

Try this:

• Restart your Mac into Recovery mode.
• Go up to the Menubar, to Utilities and down to Terminal.
• In Terminal enter "ls /var/db" then press return.
• Navigate through the resulting list and see if there is an item
named ".AppleSetupDone".

• if there is, then our job is to remove it.
• Type rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
• Type ls /var/db again and check the resulting list.
• if that file is gone, life is good.
• Quit Terminal and restart your Mac.

If that doesn't allow you access to the .AppleSetupDone file, then I'd
use an external HD with MacOS installed to startup from.  Then using
the same commands in Terminal, remove the .AppleSetupDone file from
the internal drive.  Because you've started from an external source,
you'll need to first switch over to the internal drive by using the
command "cd /volumes/Macintosh\ HD.  The back slash is required when
there is a space in the volume title as we don't want Terminal to read
that space for other purposes.

I haven't done this in a while, so can confirm the first method
tomorrow morning on a different machine than this one.  The second
method would work for sure.

Re: Further to my question about playing external audio files on my Macbook

2018-04-12 Thread Steve Matzura
May I make two more suggestions, and this time they're people, not
books. Tim Kilburn of this list is an Apple teacher, I'd bet he could
sort you in a New York minute via Skype or some other non-batch chat
exchange, and if he's too far west timewise to be convenient to work
with, I offer my own expertise such that it is via the same media. I'm
not yet an ACSP, but should be taking the exam by June, so while I'm
probably not as good as Tim, I'm closer.

On 4/12/2018 4:34 PM, 'andy' via MacVisionaries wrote:

Hi all.
Thanks to everyone who has written to offer me some help with this
learning curve, of playing media files on my Macbook.
Unfortunately, it seems that I have multiple issues going on at the
moment and this is perhaps why I'm experiencing all these other
problems with my Macbook.
For you who have written to me, I've saved your messages and plan to
be able to return to them after these other problems can be resolved.
Perhaps my biggest problem is that I live on the West Coast of
Scotland, some 55 miles north of Glasgow and my nearest VI tech guy.
I cannot get him to visit my home, because he has a standard guide
dog, whereas, I have a specially trained off-road guide dog that can
cope with my rural environment as well as the streets of a busy
Glasgow, so I'm obliged to make an appointment , visit him and secure
his support  and get help, before I can even think of playing media files.
One of my initial problems is an announcement saying something like
"This computer cannot connect to Cloud because of a problem with your
btinternet.com account"!  I've noticed this same message a couple of
miles away in my local bar, though thought that it was simply
attempting to connect with my Roughter in my house and I was 2 miles away.
There is no way that I can even begin to sort this out so need to get
that sorted before progressing to playing media files.
So my next plan is to secure this help in the hope that my problems
can be resolved away from my home.
I did get all devices set up in Icloud months ago, so perhaps if the
problems can be resolved on my Macbook, then my Imac will just pick
these up.
So for the meantime guys, I'll have to disappear for a while but I
will keep your files and hopefully be able to have a go at playing
media files on my Apple equipment later.

.
Thanks again for your patience and support.
Very best wishes.
Andy.
From Scotland with Love.

Re: MacOs couldn't be installed

2018-04-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It sounds like you'll need to reinstall MacOS High Sierra. If you cannot
enable VoiceOver at this dialog, press and hold the power button for about 5 to
7 seconds. This should force your Mac to shut down. Wait for about 5 seconds
then press the power button to start it up. Right after you press the power
button, hold down the cmd (Command) and "r" keys simultaneously and keep then
down through the Startup chime and for an additional 2 to 3 seconds, then
release. Wait for a minute or two as the Recovery system loads. Press cmd-f5
to turn on VoiceOver. If it does not turn on, wait for another minute or so
then try again. VoiceOver should turn on at this point. Once it is on, follow
the prompts for the language, then at the MacOS Utilities window, select the
Reinstall Mac OS X High Sierra item and press Continue. It should ask you to
agree to terms and such and may ask for a password. If it seems to be sitting
there for a long time without any noticeable progress, use the Window Chooser
to see if there's something waiting for your input. Allow it to progress
through the installation process and allow it to restart. It's possible that
it may restart multiple times, so do not interrupt the installation. Try
turning on VoiceOver if it's not already on, if it does not speak, wait a while
longer and try again. Do not turn off the Mac during the installation process
unless you've been sitting there for hours without any change in status. If
you have the Seeing AI app or something similar, check what is presented on the
screen if you're unable to have VO tell you.

HTH.

Re: Playing audio media on my Macbook

2018-04-12 Thread Steve Matzura
You are correct, I misstated, because I never think about the sidebar,
which does not appear on my screen.

On 4/12/2018 4:29 PM, Tim Kilburn wrote:

Hi,

This is actually not a valid statement.  The drives and other external
media always show up in the Finder, it is simply the location or style
of "Showing up" that is handled by the Finder Preferences.  By
default, these items show up in the Sidebar of any open Finder window
as opposed to appearing on the Desktop itself.  This, therefore, keeps
the Desktop less cluttered from some people's point of view.  Many of
us long time Mac users prefer the items to be on the Desktop itself,
but many other users, as well as a lot of sighted users prefer to just
access these items through the Sidebar.  VO users can also access
these items via the Sidebar, but most of us find it easier to place
these sorts of items on our Desktop, either for convenience or due to
being accustomed to operating that way.

Hi Andy let's start with the basics, in the Finder you should see any

Re: Custom Ringtones

2018-04-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

It seems that there's a bug in iTunes. Even though the Tones reside on your
iPhone, they're not showing up. You can copy new ones over, and the Tones
table will populate with the new ones, but I don't think that they really
transfer properly. When I did a copy of tones over to the iPhone, they just
said "Copying" forever. That may be because the tones already exist, but I'm
not sure yet. In any case, things aren't working totally as they should.

Re: Admin Account

2018-04-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Did it give you an error that you can relay? A few things to note. From the
external startup drive, make sure that the "Ignore Ownership" checkbox in the
"Get Info" window for your mac is checked. This will allow you to make
modifications to the Mac even though permissions may say otherwise. Going over
some of the things you'll be doing...

1. Start up from the external drive.
2. Log in as an Administrator on that drive.
3. Open Terminal.
4. Use the following commands.

ls /volumes

• this command should list the volumes connected to the current OS. One should
be the name of your external drive and the other should be your Mac, which I'll
assume is Macintosh HD. With it being named Macintosh HD, do the following:

cd Macintosh\ HD/var/db

• This command will change the directory focus from wherever it is to the
Macintosh HD and into its corresponding /var/db location. This may have been
where you went astray. If you had changed the directory but simply entered
/var/db/.AppleSetupDone as the item you wished to remove, then it was likely
trying to delete the .AppleSetupDone file in the external.. That would not
have been allowed.

Now, since focus is on the Macintosh HD's /var/db location, you should be able
to enter the following without the entire path reference.

rm .AppleSetupDone

Note that there is a period before the AppleSetupDone that might not be read by
VO depending on your Verbosity settings. If no error is returned, then the
file should be gone. You can confirm this with the ls command in this location.

ls -a

Note that the "a" has a dash in front of it. This should list all the files in
the /var/db directory within the Macintosh HD. The files that begin with the
period are normally listed first. You can VO up/down through the list and
there should be no file named .AppleSetupDone. Without that file, when you
start up your Mac, it will look for that file, and in its absence, start the
Setup Assistant. During the Setup Assistant, you enter all the required info
and create a new account. Because this account was created during the setup
process, it will be an Administrator account. You should then have two
accounts, the new one and your old one.

So, once you know that the .AppleSetupDone file is gone, make sure that the
Startup Disk is set to the internal Macintosh HD of your Mac, then restart it
and follow the prompts.

HTH.

Later...

Hi,

Further to my question about playing external audio files on my Macbook

2018-04-12 Thread 'andy' via MacVisionaries
Hi all.

Thanks to everyone who has written to offer me some help with this learning
curve, of playing media files on my Macbook.

Unfortunately, it seems that I have multiple issues going on at the moment and
this is perhaps why I'm experiencing all these other problems with my Macbook.

For you who have written to me, I've saved your messages and plan to be able to
return to them after these other problems can be resolved.

Perhaps my biggest problem is that I live on the West Coast of Scotland, some
55 miles north of Glasgow and my nearest VI tech guy.

I cannot get him to visit my home, because he has a standard guide dog,
whereas, I have a specially trained off-road guide dog that can cope with my
rural environment as well as the streets of a busy Glasgow, so I'm obliged to
make an appointment , visit him and secure his support and get help, before I
can even think of playing media files.

One of my initial problems is an announcement saying something like "This
computer cannot connect to Cloud because of a problem with your btinternet.com
account"! I've noticed this same message a couple of miles away in my local
bar, though thought that it was simply attempting to connect with my Roughter
in my house and I was 2 miles away.

There is no way that I can even begin to sort this out so need to get that
sorted before progressing to playing media files.

So my next plan is to secure this help in the hope that my problems can be
resolved away from my home.

I did get all devices set up in Icloud months ago, so perhaps if the problems
can be resolved on my Macbook, then my Imac will just pick these up.

So for the meantime guys, I'll have to disappear for a while but I will keep
your files and hopefully be able to have a go at playing media files on my
Apple equipment later.
.

Thanks again for your patience and support.

Very best wishes.

Andy.

Re: Playing audio media on my Macbook

2018-04-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

This is actually not a valid statement. The drives and other external media
always show up in the Finder, it is simply the location or style of "Showing
up" that is handled by the Finder Preferences. By default, these items show up
in the Sidebar of any open Finder window as opposed to appearing on the Desktop
itself. This, therefore, keeps the Desktop less cluttered from some people's
point of view. Many of us long time Mac users prefer the items to be on the
Desktop itself, but many other users, as well as a lot of sighted users prefer
to just access these items through the Sidebar. VO users can also access these
items via the Sidebar, but most of us find it easier to place these sorts of
items on our Desktop, either for convenience or due to being accustomed to
operating that way.

Re: Playing audio media on my Macbook

2018-04-12 Thread Steve Matzura
Remember, drives don't show up in Finder by default. This is something
about which I have never fully comes to intellectual grips. If one were
to buy a Mac, bring it home, turn it on, and start  using it, drives
appear in Finder; if one were to install the Mac operating system from
scratch, taking all the defaults with the exception of File Vault and
storing the Documents directory in the cloud, no drives appear in Finder
unless and until they are told to do so.

My fingers tremble at my Macbook and I'm so afraid of doing something wrong, I'm paralysed.

So I'm thinking that I should try something really simple.

I'm addicted by the way to talking books, so lets look at that as a method to break the ice.

I've placed the above book on a thumb drive but every time I plug it into my Macbook, absolutely nothing happens, so I cannot access this media.

On a Windows computer I'm asked "What do you want your computer to do?".

So if anyone can tell me how to access a thumb drive and be able to go through some of the easy chapters of this book then listen to them, it may be enough to finally break my spirit and get me started, hahaha.

Sorry guys for the long message but I'm sure you have all heard it before.

Very best wishes.

Re: Navigating messages inside the Mac mail app

2018-04-12 Thread Jonathan Cohn
One other possibility especially if you have the messages associated with the
mailing list in their own folder or smart folder is to interact with the mail
table down to the column level and then use the standard arrow keys to move
about once the VO cursor reads a subject. Sorry, the description above sounds
fairly complicated, but at that point the only thing read while navigating
would be the subject and perhaps the coma sped 10 messages in thread verbiage
that VOiceOver likes to say in threaded conversations.

First off, it's time to get a really good instruction book which will
take the fear outa using a very different operating system. I know, I
had it, too, and these books really did the job. Get
http://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/MAC-BASICS.html and then
http://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/MAC-HIGHSIERRA.html The first one's a
quick-start,the second one, despite its description, goes into a lot
more depth. If these two don't do it for you, then it is quite possible
Mac OS and you just don't get along. If that's so, fear not, I'm
definitely on your side (LOL). Been trying to hack Mac since 2009, and
every day I just roll my eyes in wonderment at how it takes just so many
more keystrokes to do anything. But don't let any of that pull you down.
Success and triumph over adversity are their own rewards sometimes. Keep
up with it.

Andy,

cmd is simply short for "Command". So, the key just to the left of the
spacebar is the cmd or Command key. All you need to hold down the cmd
(Command) key, then press the comma key to open the Finder Prefs.

Thanks so much, i tried it now,
it’s there, and i tried it.
but frankly i don’t like this view at all, so, is there a way to know the
subject without using the classic view?
thanks in advance

Re: Adjusting volume of battery low message

2018-04-12 Thread Jonathan Cohn
In general anything changed in Macintosh settings is saved immediately. There
are some exceptions mostly in the network settings where changing one value
effects others. In those cases when you close system settings or switch to a
different tab, A dialog will pop up asking you to confirm the change. Of course
there are cases where this doesn’t work right because of a corrupt preference
file, but those cases are rare and getting rarer.

In terms of the latter, I generally haven’t had an issue but just to be sure, I
just unplugged, my El Capitan, and I will get back to you in less than 24
hours. (I am not sure if I can use all the battery before leaving work.)

Re: Admin Account

2018-04-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Thanks Jonathan, and I can confirm that you'll need to use the second method.
Starting up from a external source is necessary unless you have root privileges
on the given machine. Single User mode gives you those root privileges by
default, but it is less than accessible.

Best.

Re: Using Swift to Dev Apps

2018-04-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Simon,

I am supposed to promote these titles in iBooks when doing presentations to
teachers and such, so I'll suggest them to you as well. In the iBooks Store,
type "Swift" into the Search field and check out the results. My
recommendation is to first download Swift Playgrounds to your iPad and go
through the Learn to Code with Swift Playgrounds 1, 2 and 3. There is also an
iTunes U course you can take which is found in the iTunes U app on your iPad.
Open the iTunes U app, double-tap the Featured tab, activate the
search field, then type Playground. There should be the Learn to Code with
Swift Playground course there and some other titles. There are App Development
iBooks as well that will show up when you do the previous search in the iBooks
Store. Hopefully, this is the sort of thing that you're looking for.

Re: Adjusting volume of battery low message

2018-04-12 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello Stacy,

I believe you are saying that VoiceOver volume is fine, but that when you get
an alert like Battery is low it speaks at a different volume and perhaps even a
different voice.

If indeed this is the case, then I believe you have text announcements of
alerts turned on. You shouldn’t need to have this enabled while using
VoiceOver. To turn it off, open system preferences to the Dictation and Speech
panel. Click the “text to speech” button and then uncheck the "Announce when
alerts are displayed” checkbox.

HTH,

Re: Admin Account

2018-04-12 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Quick minor correction here, I believe that the files starting with a period
are not listed when using the ls command, unless you specify the dash a option.

So I believe the command should be ls -a /var/db

Re: Navigating messages inside the Mac mail app

2018-04-12 Thread Bill Gallik
Hi Ramy,

When you are in the mail application, use +<,> (That’s the COMMAND key
along with the COMMA key)to place you directly in the Preferences dialog for
mail. The ToolBar will have a number of buttons - “View” included. Select
that button and you will find the “Classic View” check box as the first item in
this dialog; make certain that checkbox is indeed checked and close the dialog.

  Hello Andy,
First of all, when you plug in your thumb drive, it should show up on your

Re: OT: Aftershokz Trekz Air and other headphones

2018-04-12 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi.

I have also been using Aftershokz Bluetooth headphones for a long time now,
also just for speech output. However, since owning my AirPods, I no longer use
them. The AirPods are great for speech, music and pretty much anything else
sound-related for which I might use them. Not only do they work seamlessly
with Mac products, but they are also working quite nicely with my Kindle
equipment as well.

Take care,

Mike

RE: Admin Account

2018-04-12 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi ET,

Do you already have admin rights on the machine?

Single usermode unless this has changed since el cap doesn't work well for
access other than a magnifier

If you have admin rights already you could create one through the usual way of
users and groups,
Or possibly through the recovery console / terminal to reset password

What is it we're working with.

Using Swift to Dev Apps

2018-04-12 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Listers,

I've got a couple of things I'd like to develop in the way of apps for IOS and
wondered if anyone had information on the best way to get into app development?

I've just purchased myself a new iPad Pro 10.5 inch 256GB device which will be
somewhat easier to carry around and work on.

But need to start looking at swift development
Another question is
Can you develop apps on the iPad or do you have to do it on / via Mac OS and an
SDK

Cheers.

RE: Employment at Apple

2018-04-12 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Karen,

I've been looking more in to this working for apple thing and it appears that
due to my location on the planet I'd have the best chance of a job in one of
the austrailian offices

So writing a few applications over the weekend.

It appears I'd be totally out of luck getting a green card to work in the USA
although Canada being part of the british commonwealth although still difficult
might be an option.

Heres giving it a go.

Where?
The e-mail lists everything from sales to design, at least they are gathering
resumes via this CNIB effort.
If you are in Canada I can share it with you as well.
Perhaps apple members who monitor this list can confirm their process in
general.

Playing audio media on my Macbook

2018-04-12 Thread 'andy' via MacVisionaries
Hi all.

In brief, I'm a very determined and apparently reluctant learning of the Apple
operating system.

I've been using windows since Dos 3.1 and like many people, I am afraid of this
new system.

I Purchased a 27 Imac and a Macbook pro about 2 years ago and have hardly moved
in my learning.

Despite buying a great book, titled, Janet Ingber - Everything You Need to Know
to Use the Mac , I cannot get the motivation to "Use the mac"!

My fingers tremble at my Macbook and I'm so afraid of doing something wrong,
I'm paralysed.

So I'm thinking that I should try something really simple.

I'm addicted by the way to talking books, so lets look at that as a method to
break the ice.

I've placed the above book on a thumb drive but every time I plug it into my
Macbook, absolutely nothing happens, so I cannot access this media.

On a Windows computer I'm asked "What do you want your computer to do?".

So if anyone can tell me how to access a thumb drive and be able to go through
some of the easy chapters of this book then listen to them, it may be enough to
finally break my spirit and get me started, hahaha.

Sorry guys for the long message but I'm sure you have all heard it before.

Very best wishes.

Andy.
