The turbo timerjustkeeps the voltage up on the key-switched "IGN" circuit when you turn the key off, basically just tricking the car into thinking you never turned the car off, they generally use a 555 timer IC to count down to zero and then cut off. Some models will include a double plug (usually for different brands of car), so to install it all you do is unplug the barrel, put the doover in it's place and plug the wires back into the doover. For the record though, I hate turbo timers. They are a scam and you don't need one. If you take the last 2 minutes of your drive nice and easy, it will give the turbo time to "warm down" anyway. One is black, with a clip plug, so I am guessing that is the earth. Then there are three wires in a plug, don't really care about the plug, but there is 1 green wire, one blue wire and one red wire. I am guessing red is power. Where do the other wires get spiced into? Or have I got the power wire mixed up? No I didn't get a manual as it came out of another car. Any help will be good. Re: Conrods...
hi, the only way your gonna stroke a engine is to get a different crank, that has longer throws. changing conrods or pistons wont stroke a engine. the crankshaft brings the rod assemble ub an down. get a crank with longer throws, and if u use the same rod assemblys the pistons will come out the block. so what u have to do is get shorter conrods or shorter pistons or both. mark k - Original Message - From: Mohit K. Re: L18 EFI turbo in a 510 (T3 turbos)
a peice of string is heaps long... mark k - Original Message - From: Geordie [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: membersozdat@datascribe.com.au Sent: Saturday, 17 September 2005 10:24 AM Subject: RE: L18 EFI turbo in a 510 (T3 turbos) Oh man. How long is a piece of string? You can do a whole bunch of calculations based on how much airflow is required, and so forth.. But at the end of the day it really depends on what you want out of it. Read the book... :) If you have a high compression ratio then your going to be fairly limited on the amount of boost you can run, but still you will want a turbo that can produce the amount of air required for the engine. If your stroking it, then I assume that you don't plan on making it rev very hard, so you will have to be very careful about what turbo you choose. You're going to want something small on the exhaust side, but with enough huff on the compressor to feed it, without making it surge. Plan on using an external wastegate on it and you'll be on the right track. T3/4 turbos are cheap but a GT30somthing is going to be much better, but there's a zillion combinations to choose from. Really, You will have to look at how much power you want from it first, where in the RPM range you want it, and what it's going to be used for. Your in a real dilemma mate, because you haven't even built this engine yet. If your going to run the turbo before it's stroked it's going to require a whole different setup to when it's stroked. If you are going to build the engine first, then select a turbo for it as the very last thing you do, make sure you have all the specs figured out beforehand, and ask some experts. I guarantee they'll all give you a completely different opinion on what turbo will suit it. The best thing you can do is what I told Rob, and that is to read those 2 books, do your own research and make up your own mind on what you want. Then you can't blame anyone can you. Learn to read a compressor flow map as well, because they can / will save you megabucks of trial and error blowups. -Original Message- From: Dan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, 16 September 2005 7:06 PM To: membersozdat@datascribe.com.au Subject: Re: L18 EFI turbo in a 510 (T3 turbos) Hey Geordie, I have a custom made manifoldfor an inline 6 L series with a T3 flange on it, will be fitting it to an L28 with a P90 head (when I can find one hehe), eventually I'd be doing boring and stroking it out, evenually I want to create a 3.1 litre turbocharged engine out of it, I will probably turbocharge it before I do that though, I'll find a way to deal wit the compression ratios when I do it. Anyway, what are your thoughts on the turbocharger units and power it will make? Geordie wrote: It really depends on how much power you want to make how much lag you will accept. A T25 will give good response, but will be limited in power output and you won't want to go over 10psi with no intercooler or 15psi with intercooler. T28 will be a smidge laggier, but if you get a ballbearing one then that will offset the lagginess and give you good response like a T25 without the flow restrictions. The exhaust side A/R in real basic terms is this: The bigger the number the laggier it'll be, but with the benefit of more overall flow. .48 is small and will choke it'self up in the high RPM range. .64 is a nice middle size for 1.8 to 2lt engines. .8 is getting on the big side of things. Probably not necessary unless you start putting on big compressor housings and stuff. There are some real nice turbos and options in the T2x range, so you don't need to really go changing to T3 flange unless you have to. What i've found is that if you can switch up to T3 series of turbos (change the flange on your manifold), there are some really nice options available such as T3/4 hybrids that are dirt cheap and produce some sickening amounts of power, not necessarily laggy either. I bought a T3/4 for my SR20det and it is running on 18psi, making some really scary horsepower. On stock boost it made 215hp @ the wheels while I was running the engine in. It's now run in and 18psi is just a whole new dimension that I haven't experienced previously. It's fast, and will bag up the tyres in 4th gear @ 140ish km/h. I haven't dyno'd it at this boost level yet. For the record, the exhaust side is .48 T3 housing which *I Think* equals something larger in the T2x series like .6 to .8 ish. I might be wrong about that part tho. A turbo'd L 18-20 engine with similar turbo configuration could do the same sorts of things. The T2x series of turbos are quite sufficient though in most setups, so don't take me too literally. I just went to T3 coz I had one sitting around, and then found a bigger badder one very cheap when the small one blew up. If you can, grab yourself a disco-potato GT25RS and you will be set. These are apparantly the ducks guts of ballbearing T2x turbos. I LOVE turbos. Cheap

Re: Rally light's/ Alternator
hi, i think MAYBE u might be able to use a holden v8 alt on the 1600, these would be higher amps. i remember using a L series alt on a 253 v8, but cant quiet remember if i had to change/modify anything mark k - Original Message - From: rclough [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: membersozdat@datascribe.com.au Sent: Monday, 5 September 2005 10:22 PM Subject: Re: Rally light's/ Alternator Mark, the original alternator puts out 35amp and is OK for a pair of 100w driving light globes in addition to standard other electrics, typically used on a road car. However, when used all night, rally cars suck a fair bit more power driving all lights plus additional interior instrumentation and equipt. On cold night time events, assume heavy use of wipers, washers, heater, demister, intercom, trip meter, compass, four lights continuously on high beam (400Watts) plus high wattage reversing light, map reading during stage breaks without engine running to recharge, trouble lights in engine bay and boot at service stops, cabin light, almost contant use of brake lights, etc. If you add it all up its quite a load. This use sucks out battery power faster than the 35Amp alternator can put it back, and the battery will eventually go flat if it has a standard storage capacity. 55/85 amp alternators used to be the go. Now you can buy 100amp plus alternators to keep really small batteries fully charged. However these suckers are really heavy and pull more power off the engine. You need to get the balance between bigger battery (more storage, full voltage supply), slightly larger alternator (keep up with demand and faster recharge), without adding too much weight or diverting too much engine power to keeping the battery charged.. - Original Message - From: Mark Overend [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: membersozdat@datascribe.com.au Sent: Monday, September 05, 2005 2:39 PM Subject: Rally light's/ Alternator G'day, Can anyone tell me if i will have to upgrade my altenator on my 180B when i put rally lights on. You can take parts off a 40 year old car, bolt them onto a 30 year old car, shove a 10 year old engine in, and bolt on some brand new spankn turbos and come up with a car that can tear the ass off a brand new $80,000 commodore bweteen traffic lights for $20,000. Meccano eat your heart out. hi, i reckon we have some old asbestos sheeting some where , cut some out for pad material...?? mark k - Are you still wasting your time with spam?... There is a solution! If i have any problems i suppose i can hunt around for a valve of those cars. Has anyone tryed the QFM Brake pads, i have been told the Bendix dont work as well as they used too, due to the asbestos being removed. Perhaps not totally relevant but I ran QFM pads in the front of the HQ racer and they were great - caused less rotor wear than the Bendix at the time too. My favourite pads in my most demanding car (VN) were made by Lucas though - seems like moving from asbestos to composites shuffled the deck with pad quality, at least in the early days. -- No virus found in this incoming message. Re: Removing snapped head bolt
hi, this is what i have found removing bolts ESPECIALLY high tensile bolts , heads etc.. if the head is completely broken of and u can get to the top of the broken bolt, get a reall small straight edge screwdriver, or a longish thin center punch, modify if have to, then get a hammer . get the punch etc and position it on the edge of the broken bit, then try and knock it around like to undo it.. the thing is with high tensile , when they break, all the tension from under the head is released, i have even unscrewed ht bolts with fingers, once they have busted. if it was a mild steel bolt, theres a 50/50 chance you`ll get it out, since the metal is softer , when u titen it it , what u call ithmmmushes up in the thread and can be a real hassel to remove. if there is a bit you can get to clamp some vice grips on the bit and turn. or place a ht nut over the broken bolt, get a mig on decent heat , and fill the middle of the nut thats sitting over the broken bolt with weld, when its cool ed down use a socket etc to remove,,hopefully how did u break it ? or wasnt it you ;-) mark k - Are you still wasting your time with spam?... The concern i guess is the amount of engine in front of the struts affecting cornering. i put this to the ozdat forum the concensus was that i was mad for suggesting it :) i reckon in the end the best 6 cylinder would be the vg30. i think that it is legal in NA form, just within the weight ratio? has anyone had any experience with the vg30 swap ? from what i have seen it is probably just as expensive as a sr20 etc. i thought the L series 6 transplant might be quite cheap to do, but have no idea how bad the weight distribution would affect the corner ability of the vehicle. I found a guy (Eddie) who has seen that orange stanza, he reckons the radiator is under that aluminiun cover that you can see in the photo. I still like the idea of the L20 or L28 in the 1600 i think it would be comparatively cheap to do, ie no special requirements for fuel injection etc etc, just stick triples on it. the handling has me concerned though, any ideas ?anyway enough rambling for now.

hi, i sorta dont know about it cost wise... then again if you can do it at reasonable cost i` would do it. some times you can offset grind a crank. but u can only do this to the max undersize bearings avail able , which i think would be 40 or 50 thou, ( wouldnt be much of a hp improvenent...)just like conrod bearings for my vn v6, ooosss let that bit slip mark k - Are you still wasting your time with spam?... Anyone here built an L18 stroked? Is it worth doing compared to an L20B? I know that it will be about 50lbs lighter based on engine weights that have been posted a while ago here. That alone interests me. It looks like around 1940cc is possible with a +.060 overbore and 5mm stroke. Would a Japan L18 block take this OK? Would the crank be welded up for this and reground. What piston specs are required. I'm not looking to save money going this way, BTW. The concept interests me as a replacement engine for an L16 for road use without going the L20B route, that's all.
