drip some AT fluid onto the shafts at the end of the motor I have done this. Can I get to it to do that? Through the air intake grilles in front of the window. Re: [MBZ] SD run-hot update
I replaced the radiator hoses when I installed the rebuilt engine in the SLC, but only because I had replaced almost everything else. The old hoses (no idea how old - no records with the car) appear to be fine. I have not had to EVER replace a top hose except following accidents. The hoses on my present cars (and the ones I retired over the last 4-5 years) are/were almost all original. Re: [MBZ] 115 blower??
Sounds about right. I've done the job twice - once by the manual - took me about 20 hours, and through the speaker hole the second time - took 6-8 hours. I had to glue the speaker cover frame back on to keep it from rattling - the lip it snaps to had to be cut off to get the fan out. MB lists the job as 18 hours labor, IIRC, to do it the Benz way. If you go the trans-speaker hole route, it can be cut down to 5-6 hours, BUT you end up with banged-up knuckles and hands and lots of swearing. The whole car was built around the blower motor on the MB assembly line, so getting to it is the bear. -- OK Don, KD5NRO Norman, OK The Americans will always do the right thing... after they've exhausted all the alternatives. True, I ran between Huntsville, AL and Nashville TN one a week and I slowed down to 40 MPH climbing one particular hill. I used to get on the interstate, push the pedal to the floor and let off at the other end. Most of the time I drifted between 80 and 85 except for those darn hills. Oddly enough, I would go no faster than 80 - 85 down hill which made no since until I studied how the fuel injection system worked. The engine is governed to a top speed of 5500 RPM. Re: [MBZ] Bio Standby Hose Package-Rusty
Everybody: I have been running various blends and formulations of biodiesel in my 4 diesels for a couple years now. Here's what I found: 1. New standard braided injector return lines can fail catastrophically in less than one year, spraying the engine compartment with fuel and creating a dangerous fire hazard. Happened twice, thankfully no fires. 2. New tank filler gaskets will rot in 2 years. Goopy melted rubber oozes down the side of car, damaging paint. 3. Fuel tank lines have not yet shown obvious acceleration of rot other than standard rate of decay. I watch these closely. 4. Fuel leaks at mechanical joints are appearing all over. Rubber problems seem to depend on the particular bio used. The commercial bio sources seem to be the worse than homebrew. The latest shipment from a commercial supplier is particularly nasty. I strongly recomend that anyone running bio replace the braided return lines immediately wth Viton or 1/8 hi pressure rubber fuel line. The old style lines constitute a fire hazard. There may be no sign of leakage, softening, or other prior warning before they blow competely off. Yes, you might smell the leak and pull over if one fails, but a family member might not recognize the problem until a fire breaks out. Bruce Levi Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well, I'm not too worried about the rubber lines with bio. The other part I've heard is that there aren't many rubber lines that are made with natural rubber that are more susceptible to being eaten by bio. I certainly don't blame wvo for a leak I had on a worn out cracked and split return line on a 23 year old car... As for the synthetic, it's all in how you look at it. I've experienced first-hand how synthetic causes leaks. I switched to synthetic one weekend and then within an hour I had an oil feed line for the turbo that was spraying a stream of oil. Now, I don't think synthetic dug a whole in the line, but I think it unclogged the gunk that was previously plugging the hole... So, whether it caused it or not is semantics, but the fact that synthetic can start leaking when you switch over is definitely true in some cases. Levi (: On 5/24/06, David Brodbeck wrote: Bob Rentfro wrote: Is Viton the super secret good stuff? Viton has very good chemical-resistant properties. In my previous job at a carwash manufacturer we made heavy use of Viton seals for valves and fittings that carried soaps. A lot of the soaps contained D-Limonene, a powerful degreaser and solvent derived from orange peels. It's non-toxic, but it'll swell rubber in high concentrations -- Viton and PVC are about the only polymers that will stand up to it. It's pretty amazing the first time you see a rubber O-ring that's swelled up to twice its normal size. I wonder how much of the biodiesel kills hoses story is because a lot of old cars have hoses that are about to go anyway, and when they fail the biodiesel gets blamed. Sort of like the old wives' tale about synthetic oil causing leaks. ___ http://www.striplin.net For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net ___ http://www.striplin.net For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net Bruce 82 300CD 334kmi 'His' 85 300CD 240kmi 'Hers' 75 240D 202kmi 'Donner' 77 240D 204kmi 'Blitzen' 73 220D 'It' - Do you Yahoo!? Yup - that's the one. First badged as 450SLC 5.0, then changed to 500SLC with a re-designed engine and four speed tranny. It's the first aluminum block 117 engine with the chassis tuned for the rallies/races that MB won in that time frame. My take on the illegals: We have them in mass quantity, mainly because our system has consistently granted preference to illegal over legal immigration. The illegal gets amnesty, which usually treats him as if he had legally entered and started the citizenship process on the day he can first prove he was illegally here. Meanwhile, his cousin who was stupid enough to ask for permission is still waiting in Mexico. There is virtually no legal immigration from Mexico, because the country specific quota is already exceeded by the illegals. My solution: Get serious about finding and exporting the illegals. The video from the May Day protests should give us lots of prime suspects. For every illegal we kick out, we let in one legal. My amnesty program is to show no preference or ill will towards the illegals we kick out, they can apply for legal entry, securing their place in line with everybody else who applies today, behind everybody who already applied. Re: [MBZ] Bio Standby Hose Package-Rusty
To my knowledge vegetable oil needs to be at like 600F or higher before it might potentially ignite. So, I suppose it's possible on the turbo or something (Pretty sure an oil leak on the turbo/exhaust is what cause the fire on an old Impulse I had). Not sure what the temp is of diesel. A spark certainly wouldn't set either off. For that matter, I've tried to burn some spilled vegoil residue off of concrete with a propane torch and didn't have much luck. A bit better, runs at an even 100 or just under during the day, and in colder temps late at night varies between 100 and 110-ish, depending on driving conditions. So I am thinking I have a clutch-fan issue too (though the viscous aspect of the clutch fan is near perfect). Some time stop the engine and feel the radiator immediately behind the fan. It should be 'hot'. If it's cold there's a flow problem. BTDT. Can't decide whether to bother with a citric flush and refill through the top hose (I seem to recall on the older lists some people found the flush only worked for a few months), or just go ahead and replace the radiator. If the radiator is full of deposits, likely the engine is as well and heat transfer on that end of the cycle is also compromised. Before a radiator replacement (expensive) I'd do the flush in any event. Our SDL is entering its third summer after the acid flush, and has not overheated since. We had a bout of 90+-degree weather already, and no problem. Borrowed time? Perhaps, but it's at an attractive interest rate! -- Jim

I don't know of any other way to get the bugs and trash out of the center of the radiator, just in front of the fan clutch. Trying to blow it clear will only damage the fins. If HOT air can't pass over the clutch, it will not fully engage, even if it is in perfect condition. I would say 7-8 years in the desert, but maybe less than 3 years in the Midwest, where the air is full of bugs and chafe, etc. Side note: If you take any car into a radiator shop for a rodding out, and/or internal cleaning, they are not going to tell you about all the trash the found on the front of the radiator. They are going to take your money and take full credit for cleaning what may have been an almost perfect interior. Side note 2: If you have never pulled a radiator, the next time you are in a wrecking yard, take notice of the radiator faces, on cars that have had the condenser scavenged. It led a very hot life. The odd thing here is that the car's tendency to run hotter in cold ambient temps probably means the problem with the clutch fan is related to the 'sensor' (not sure what to call it) not being able to cope with cold, not hot. Side note: If you take any car into a radiator shop for a rodding out, and/or internal cleaning, they are not going to tell you about all the trash the found on the front of the radiator. [MBZ] OM617/300sd oil pressure drop at idle, in gear
This is related to my run-hot thread I seem to recall that the (base) MB spec for oil pressure at hot idle in an OM617 is 1 bar. I am getting ~1.5-ish bar at idle hot in park, even when the car is running hot, but it drops further and faster, to 1 bar in gear once the engine has really got hot, or I'm in dead traffic, and can even sneak just under the 1 bar mark in traffic jams. So I am constantly shifting into neutral when waiting. Question: what is the spec, and is it spec'd for neutral/park or idling in gear? I need to replace a leaking pressure switch on top of the dryer in an '83 300D Turbo. What weight oil are you running? Some say spec is .5. I was using 0/40 M1 and saw the same conditions you describe. What's the flash point of bioD? I've had #2 spraying around the engine compartment from time to time for years and NEVER had a fire and know of NONE reported in any Mercedes diesel as the result of leaking fuel. Is Bio that much more hazardous? Might be a good reason to prohibit it's use. Good idea to replace the return hoses with Viton to keep things tidy though if using Bio. The oil pressure must increase to 3 bar as the car comes up to speed (Mercedes doesn't absolutely require it to reach 3 bar until 3000 rpm, but I get nervous if it's not there by 2000). Of importance is that idle be at 700-800 under ALL conditions (AC on, AC off, in gear, out of gear, etc.). If it won't do that, there is something (usually minor) wrong. Re: [MBZ] SD run-hot update
The odd thing here is that the car's tendency to run hotter in cold ambient temps probably means the problem with the clutch fan is related to the 'sensor' (not sure what to call it) not being able to cope with cold, not hot. That screams thermostat (or eroded thermostat housing) to me, not fan clutch. Not all brand-new thermostats are good ones. When you feel the radiator immediately behind the fan, is it hot or cold? When the SDL's radiator was clogged that area was cold, so of course the fan clutch wouldn't (and shouldn't, and wouldn't have done any good if it had) engage. -- Jim

Military pilots are required to log x number of hours per month for training purposes. We used to haul beer to the USCG Exchange on Nantucket (from Cape Cod) and log it as training time. We also flew Admirals on sight-seeing tours to Maine lighthouses -- logged as training time. So, each time a C-130 full of illegals are rounded up, haul them by bus (air conditioning optional) to the nearest military facility, load them on board, and have the pilots log some training time. Mexico is but a short hop, and it it is to Europe then a training flight into one of our bases there, then a different aircraft (more training time) to the nearest border. Let us also take a look at the current proposal of letting anyone here 5+ years apply for citizenship - absolute bonanza for forgers; 2 - 5 years to exit and reapply - bonanza for forgers and less than honest immigration workers [reported to be a problem already]; getting rid of the rest. 90 days to process up to 12 million people, including finding them to begin with, doing a detail document check to sort out forgeries. Then of course there are the usual case of dad has been here 6 years, mom only 3, etc. I am not sure I could prove I was working 5 years ago without IRS and employer records. Say we could somehow find all the workers we need already trained to speak the correct languages, spot forged documents, and determine who was really supposed to fit into which category. Assuming the 90 days is 90 working days and not three months - that means that if this imaginary work force could each do 25 full checks a day [which I doubt would be possible, including calls to the sub-contractors who supplied day laborers to farmers to ask about their records of hiring illegals, paid in cash, from 5 years ago] we would need 5,333 workers for each of the 90 days. I'm sure none of them would get ill, quit, or be a slow worker. I think we would also need to assign all state and national legislators to be part of such a work force. At least they wouldn't be able to suggest any equally impossible legislation while they were trying to do that. Such a well thought out plan. I just wish I had a better one to answer all the problems. Nothing was said about the English version being discontinued. MBUSA is discontinuing it, but I wonder if it is still being produced in Germany and may be available through another channel. I only ever received two copies (subscribing just as they decided to discontinue it). BOTH issues came Priority mail! This is NOT how to mail a magazine... DID ANYBODY ELSE GET THEIRS ALL BY PRIORITY MAIL? I'm wondering if MBUSA was loosing money on it because they don't know how to mail magazines... 40,000 is alot of subscribers and even though they are scattered around english speaking countries, there are shipping methods (ISAL - International Surface Air Lift) which makes international mailings reasonable. Anyway, just thinking aloud. I really liked the magazine. I can't see someone ditching a mag with 40,000 subscribers when you are simplt translating from a mag you are already doing for 90,000 subscribers. I think someone screwed something up. It wouldn't hurt to check and clean the sensor connection to ensure good contact and accurate readings. BTDT, also repaired the frays in the sheathing on the wire to the sensor. Was the original T-Stat stuck open or closed prior to changing it? It was only six months old and I changed it, well, just because it was the cheapest way to start. Spud's still unsubbed from the list; too busy to keep up these days. He's asked me to forward the following, which I've culled from several emails in hopes someone can shed more light. Those of you who've been around surely know how to send mail to him direct. I'm on digest so won't make a very good conduit anyway. j Begin quoted text: My BIL had to replace the compressor in his 87 300D, and while he was at it, decided to convert back to R-12 and flush out the neon green PAG/POE oil. However, the FSM is rather vague on the fresh oil fill. There's a spec of 120cc of mineral oil to be added to a new, empty compressor. Question is, is that spec for the compressor only, or the entire system? It appears that there may need to be another 70cc or so for the condenser, drier, and hoses. Anyone know for sure? ...he did put in approx 7 ounces of oil. The system held pressure for 2 hours with dry nitrogen (around 300psi, I think) and then was vacuumed for a couple hours also, then charged. And after all that, the new compressor was binding enough to squeal the belt and trip the belt safety circuit... d'oh! Absolutely no idea what went wrong - any ideas? Put 4oz into the compressor and the remaining 3oz into the lines. It was a fresh rebuild, or new, I'm not sure which (probably rebuilt). It arrived dry - no oil in it. He added 4oz to the compressor and turned it by hand about 20 times before installing it. I too am wondering if it's a bad rebuild... at least I hope so. He's not too happy about losing a fresh charge of R-12, though, that's for sure
Re: [MBZ] MB Invoice / WIndow Sticker
Maybe I'll try again in a few months - sometimes people make mistakes when looking thru files - When I called about my 78 240D a long time ago they said my VIN wasn't in the system - and the only explanation was that it might be a gray market car. But I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would import a 240D that's loaded (everything except leather seats) when they could buy one at their local dealer and not worry about service/warranty problems. I suspect their filing methods may be less than perfect. Re: [MBZ] A/C dryer replacement
In a message dated 5/27/2006 9:24:39 A.M. US Mountain Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I need to replace a leaking pressure switch on top of the dryer in an '83 300D Turbo. In American cars the dryer is usually replaced any time a part in the A/C system is replaced, but I don't want to replace this $180 dryer until vacuuming and gassing up the system to see if this is the only leak. All opinions on the pros and cons of replacing the pressure switch without replacing the dryer are welcome. Gerry, Ithink it was about 82 or 83 that they made the pressure switches so that they screwed into a shrader valved port. If so, you won't loose more than a psssft of freon. Non the less, I would feel totally comfortable changing any switch without changing the dryer. Just be careful how much pressure exists, IF you are unscrewing a sensor from a live penetration. The word bullet comes to mind! Regards, Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 262 K miles 98 ML 320, 142 K miles
