Same here with the Green Car Company. I am seeing a few of the
Smarts on the road now. At least they are real cars, unlike the
bastardized beasts the seller is making with old Volvos into diesel,

Found it, thank goodness the shock strut doesn't have teeth or it woulda'
bit me. For some reason the left front shock strut, the threaded rod part,
extended ~ 1/4 and was causing the problem. I disconnected the two nuts,
added an extra rubber washer under the top washers and the noise has
disappeared.

Rubber buffers are probably dead then. I believe you can get new ones
-- some rainy day it will be worth your time to replace all four sets
-- when going back in, only tighten the pair of nuts down to where a
thread or two shows at the top of the top nut, or the equivalent
distance with a lock nut. You can run them down until they stop, but
then you don't have the cushioning of the rubber as intended.

You asked:more slippage during shifts - in other words,

when a shift takes a longer period of time - more wear is taking place

It's just like a clutch on a manual tranny. If you let the clutch out
slowly the gear will engage slowly and smoothly at the expense of a buildup
of heat on the clutch disc material - and subsequent wear. OTOH, letting
the clutchout quickly so the geares are engaged solidly quickly, the parts
will mate and little heat will be generated. Of course, the shift will be
pretty abrupt.

Does this suggest that the more slippage during shifts - in other words,
when a shift takes a longer period of time - more wear is taking place?

I have the feeling this is the case, as I understand that in auto trannys,
a

quick, crisp shift is more healthy than a drawn-out shift where the engine
speed sort of takes a long slide down into the higher gear (like
fingernails

on chalkboard to me)? Our CRV does this under some conditions.

We have a 1992 600SEL. The 1992-1995 S-Class cars used bio-degradeable
wiring harness's under the hood. If your car starts throwing error codes it
isn't the senders - it's the wiring harness.

Another known issue is the evaporator core - local guy can do them for $3300
using factory parts.

Rear accumulators - two nitrogen filled spheres ( softball size ) affect
rear ride for ASD. The nitrogen leaks past the seal and the dampening is
gone. Not wiring related but you might as well replace that harness also
when your replacing all the other ones.

V-8 motors have the oil tubes on top the motor that get brittle break and
also get clogged - easy DIY fix.

V-12 motors typically need the ETA's replaced. $3500 each from the dealer.

I have heard that the door trunk closers can die, haven't experienced that
yet.

1996 - 1999 use OBD2 computer systems diagnosis which is much better than
OBD1 and the wiring harness's hold up much better.

Find a local shop with old school guys working there. Dealerships typically
use FNG's because their cheap. But they're also clueless.

OK, have a few questions regarding the W140 S Class (S500). I'm looking
 for
a car for my Dad. I've looked at a few older W126 models, but most are
either rough, unknown history, or the old tin worm is starting to get to
them. I've looked around for a SDL, but not many around up here. I know
there has been much negative stuff said about the old W140, but I've
 always
loved the look of the car. Also, they seem to have depreciated pretty
 fast
compared to some other models. Ok, the questions. What is the going
 range
for a nice S500? What were the real problems with these cars, and did
 they
infact have that many problems, or was most of it due to lact of
 maintance?
I mean, were there problems with the important things like the engine,
 trans
etc, or was it more fiddly things like the auto door close latch, and
similar toys? What are some of the problem areas on these cars? My
 dad
does very few miles now that he's retired, but I'd like a big safe
comfortable car for him and Mum. Gas mileage is not a really big issue.
 I
now a coulpe of guys sell parts on the list, and there are a few mail
 order
places listed too. Any of you guys carry parts for the old W140? Also,
 any
places in Canada selling parts, other than the dealer? I've seen a S500s
around lately. Can anyone recommend a used car place in Toronto for such
cars. The few I've seen at the dealer are WAY above what them seem to go

Hi James,
Thanks for your help and pointing out a few things to watch for. Love the
V12 cars. I like the early ones as I belive they had a little more power,
and didn't have the two tone interior? I saw a really nice '98 S500 the

catch them, but no show, so I left.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the shop manual for the W140? A

Thanks again for your help James. Hope the back is feeling better.

know
there has been much negative stuff said about the old W140, but I've
 always
loved the look of the car.
I've seen a
S500s
around lately. Can anyone recommend a used car place in Toronto for
such
cars. The few I've seen at the dealer are WAY above what them seem to
go
for in the market, and they weren't even anything extra special.

Thanks for any help, suggestions and advise.

134a is just as pricey as R12 substitutes. There is no reason to use 134,
especially if you like your air conditioner to cool. swap the compressor

I think many people think of a car as being old once they buy one or two
parts, and the cost of those parts is greater than the value of the car.
:-) I've driven lots of older cars as daily drivers. People will often say
they can not drive an old car as they couldn't trust it. I ask them, when
they last went on holiday, how old did they think the plane was they flew at
40,000 feet in, over sea or ocean. :-) hee hee.

mineral oil, and change the rubber hoses, both hi and low side. The
permeability
of rubber hoses gets worse the older they get, and 134 will leak out of a
hose quicker than 12. You already mentioned you will be changing the
compressor
and the drier/receiver.

The new hoses will have a teflon lining to increase their leak resistance,
which will be fine for R12 and/or it's substitutes.too. leaving any mineral
oil in a system changed to R134 is asking for trouble, does black death get
your attention?

Given the fixed specs of your system, R134 will be from 12 to 20% less
efficient, especially on hot days, when you need it most. Where you live, can
you
give up that performance.

Let's hear from a successful R134 convert.

Re: [MBZ] 123 R134 conversion

2007-03-27 Thread Tom Hargrave
R134a and mineral oil are compatible, the issue is that the oil is not
transported through the system with 134a. This is why you have to add PAG
oil or Ester oil to the system.

The black death mentioned by Jim is caused by the very high hygroscopic
nature of PAG oil. You must change out the receiver dryer completely
vacuum your system before adding PAG oil.

I've converted quite a few to 134a and have had no problems. But I always
change out the receiver dryer and I always pull hold a vacuum for at least
2 hours on a hot day.

I've also converted a few to freeze and have always had problems later. The
issue is that freeze depends on a balance of two gasses if the balance
gets off by more than a percent or so, it looses its refrigeration
properties. One of the gasses is a much smaller molecule size than the other
it leaks out faster (all auto AC systems leak). Once you leak enough to
get out of balance, you have to completely evacuate the system recharge.

Freeze is also very flammable! R134a is not.

Jim,

Gasoline is not intentionally brought into the cabin of a car a gas fire
will almost always start under the hood, giving you plenty of time to
escape. Unless you drive a 1974 Pinto, you smoke are rear ended by a
Gremlin...

One failure point, requiring me to remove rebuild 2 high pressure hoses
was the bend just before the expansion valve. Both failures dumped Freon
into the cabin of the car. I could smell the Freon rolled down the window
in my 300SD. My son's 280E suffered the same fate. He did not smell anything
but it could have leaked out overnight. I don't smoke but if I did smoke
with Freeze in the system? Possibly - Boom!

They were spun off from Toyota many years ago and may be still part of the

quick. It took quite a bit of cranking to get it to go again.
Put in a new driver's door panel (Thanks Fred!) which has cured the car from
randomly locking the doors.
Then I thought I'd take a look at the clicking window regulator in the driver's
door. BIG MISTAKE, the inner workings of the window motor etc are still a
mystery to me. In fact all I managed was to take a window that just made noise
when it was all the way up to where it makes noise all the time its going up
AND doesn't go all the way up without help.
Ahh well, I'm going to Las Vegas for work in April, my Indy can take care of it.

Still looking for the valve that raises idle when its cold out. Found a likely
looking suspect and a bad looking 90 degree adapter which I replaced but no
benefit. Some playing with the mity-vac is surely needed.

I also put a full bottle of Diesel Kleen in both through the fuel filter and in
the tank,.The stuff smells just like Diesel Purge and has a similar effect in
quieting down the engine.

Finally since snow season seems to be over I pulled the 3 extra wheels and
tires from the trunk (another thanks Fred!). Hopefully the reduction in extra
weight will buy me a couple points in fuel mileage...

Need oil and air filters for my Nissan truck, thought I'd give Rusty

other generics at the local shops. Several filters listed, Denso
being one, also NPN. Any suggestions?

Luther,

IF you go to 134 (not recommended by me) you should flush out all the
mineral oil, and change the rubber hoses, both hi and low side. The
permeability
of rubber hoses gets worse the older they get, and 134 will leak out of a
hose quicker than 12.

Re: [MBZ] Frankenheapery

2007-03-27 Thread Jim Cathey

Getting a heartbreaking hole in the seat back upholstery? Mysterious
scratches on your new belt? I probed the hole with my finger and
found, of course, a broken spring end. Damn! The upholstery was
pretty decent for its age before this happened. (I can always get a
new belt.)

Time to weld! I removed the seat from the car and then took off the
seatback panel. The seat back has what I would call 'ribbon' springs,
versus coil or serpentine wire, and one was broken where it took the
sharp bend from the rear of the frame to mate with the main ribbon
that spanned the back in that area. The broken end had worked its way
past the main ribbon and dug a hole through everything. Fortunately
it was able to wedge into its proper place due to the location of the
break, so I didn't have to rig anything to hold it in place. I used
the wire-feed welder to weld the broken spring ends back together. As
is usual, I don't trust a welded spring to hold, the welding heat
ruins the temper. So I got a strip of scrap mild steel and bent it
around the joint, then tacked it together. If the spring breaks again
right there that should hold things together enough to keep the broken
end from going on another journey of discovery. (Ouch!)

Hi Alex,
I fear we are being rapidly left behind as technology marches forward.
The 140 is now 10-15 years old and for someone to have been trained to work
on it means the techicians have been in the shop for 20+ years so they'd
have a little residence time before being trained on the Monarch of
Mercedes. MB would have trained the most experienced technicians to work
on those very expensive models. So, at this point, those technicians will
have been working as technicians for 30-45 years making them 50-65 years old
presently - hence the old school guys comment.

The young wippersnappers won't know what a W140 looks like
unfortunately. Plus its electronic controls - state of the art back in the
90s is archaeic now.

Yesterday I got in the car to go home from work, hit the key and
nothing. No alternator light, no glow plug action, no cranking. Dead
as a stone. Crap. I popped the hood and found that the positive
battery cable had come loose, probably going over the speed bump just
before I parked. (The clock had stopped at about the time I'd gotten
to work.) Due to the way things are laid out there's a bit of tension
on that cable that encourages such misbehavior. I got the wrenches
out of the trunk and put the cable back. After that no problem,
things were back to normal. Good thing this wasn't my wife's car!

You need new links in the suspension. Have the subframe mounts checked too --
they sometimes go bad by now (they will eventually die, they are rubber!).

AC problem is hopefully just bad o-rings on the piping manifold and not a

Re: [MBZ] 123 R134 conversion

2007-03-27 Thread Glenn Brown

I had the AC compressor on my '84 300D replaced in '98 and, as far as I
know, all that was done was that the system was flushed and R134A added.
Other than nedding to get a fillup every 2-3 years (Note: The car would
sit idle in the garage in the winter), and the fact that R134A indeed is
less efficient than R12 so things don't cool very well unless there's a full
charge (Note: There probably isn't as much of an AC need in Rochester, NY as
elsewhere). But when there's a full charge of R134A in my 300D, I've driven
to NC in July without any problems, but of course I'm not one who likes the

I fear we are being rapidly left behind as technology marches forward.
The 140 is now 10-15 years old and for someone to have been trained to
work
on it means the techicians have been in the shop for 20+ years so they'd
have a little residence time before being trained on the Monarch of
Mercedes. MB would have trained the most experienced technicians to work
on those very expensive models. So, at this point, those technicians will
have been working as technicians for 30-45 years making them 50-65 years
old
presently - hence the old school guys comment.

That makes sense, and makes me feel even more lucky to have a good indy to
go to. The shop foreman is in his 70s, and most of the techs look to be in
their 40s and 50s. Most of the cars I see in there are 123s, 126s, and
124s, too.

That ground strap down to the tranny on the 123 causes head-scratch
problems too if it comes just loose enough -- and it is not real easy

I think you're right about for the time. What did it do, 145-150 mph or
something? That was pretty good as V8 Ferrari would be pushed hard to do
that, and a porsche 930 was only a tick faster. Today, many sedans have to
be chained down to keep them at 155 mph, though I hear Mercedes and BMW may
be lifting the limiters to keep up with other luxo brands. I think in
Germany, on some AMGs you can already order an optional limiter that raises
the limit to 300kph over the current 250kph limit. Even at 300, I'm pretty
sure they're holding some models back.

To answer your question, I met my wife on the schoolbus way back when we were
in highschool. We dated for about 4.5
years and were married young. I was 21 and she was 18. We will have been
married 34 years in August of this year.

Let me offer some advice - worth what you will pay for it perhaps - but here
goes in any event.

It is not going to get any easier to find the right girl. As we get older we
bring along more baggage. So, if you
are determined to be married, get on with it.

I guess the other side of the coin is that marriage does not suit everyone and
it may not be the end of the world
if you remain a bachelor. We have a friend who is now 80 and has never been
married. He seems to be a happy sort
and gets along quite well. He lives amid a mess and is often rather unkempt
looking but that is just part of his
charm.

Speaking as an Aging Bachelor (48 this year), I don't necessarily agree that
being single at 27 is an automatic cause for concern, it's all relative to
your life goals.

HOWEVER, I say that with the caveat that I at your age, while I wanted to
get married, got a TON of bad advice from both my contemporaries and older
men, to relax and not take the whole thing seriously (women are like trains
and all that crap). Problem is you may find you suddenly don't like any of
the trains, and you realize you let a couple of nice trains go right through
the station years before.

So my advice is to not worry but instead play hard, not in terms of bars and
so on, but in any way that provides opportunities to meet potentially
compatible women. Night classes, outdoors, volunteer. You may not actually
meet a person directly that way, but you will meet women and women have a
tendency to assist fate when they see an opportunity (friends of friends,
etc.).

Actually, just getting out there is the best strategy. A friend of mine does
the speed dating thing from time to time and rather likes it.

Arranged? A bit retrograde but given the divorce rate overall, it's no worse
than any other strategy I guess.

I found wife #1 sitting behind me in History class the freshman year of
college, 1970.

I found wife #2 in an Internet chat room, 1995.

Guess which one is er, ... umm ... more fun?

Well, you're 27 and haven't found a girl yet; let us give it a shot.

Re: [MBZ] way OT: finding a wife

2007-03-27 Thread Rich Thomas
Cooking classes.

When I was 20something I took some Chinese cooking classes in Cambridge,
MA. I was the only guy in them, except for one who signed up with his
girlfriend so they could both get out of the house together (from the
spouses). They soon disappeared, so me and several girls. Not only did
I learn how to cook Chinese food (from a Polish Jew, go figure, who took
Asian studies at Hahvahd and lived in China for awhile) who was also
kinda hot and somewhat interested, it kept my social life going for a
few years -- I would go to parties with one girl or another, meet others
too. I got considerable interest from the women in the classes (I ended
up taking 3 I think, over a year or so), who appeared to have signed up
to meet guys. Some good times, in the classes and out. Going out after
for a pop was always fun too, me and 3 or 4 girls (including one or two
who were married but drank double and acted single). I think all of
them were professional types, educated, and mostly very nice and fun.
One of them I got fairly friendly with was truly a psycho, but she was
wicked smart, attractive, and also quite nice (she would tell me about
these bizarre things her roommate did, then I found out she had no
roommate, she was talking about herself in a way her shrink told her to
talk to me about these things to get a gauge on my acceptance... oh
well). She was a lead-in though to another girl who was, um, very much
fun to be with, nudge nudge wink wink say no more, who turned out to be
TOO much fun to be with, and required more, lots more, fun than I was
able to provide given some geographic constraints).

I worked with my wife, but the Chinese food was a big plus in the early
stages. No other straight guy could cook like I could.

Or you could tell your parents you're gay, they would likely drop dead,
then you wouldn't have to worry about it any more.

I think it is way too late to start thinking about a different model. This one
has just become too comfortable -
like my old 300D. Not the newest and most stylish but just keeps pluggin away.

[MBZ] Think I found one, what should I pay??

2007-03-27 Thread E M

Hey Everyone,

Just when I was about to give up, a car fell in my lap. Want you thoughts.
It's a gaser. '88 with a whopping 320,000 kms on it. Very very clean, no
rust or repaint, interior mint, one owner. Feels like some of the rubber
bits in the suspension could do with a little work. Starts right up, and
runs quiet. Book stamped until they ran out of room 9 years ago. Asking
$4300 Canadian. I think that's about $3500-3600 US? Is the guy in the
ballpark with the price? Oh, comes with winter rims, minus tires too.
Thanks for your thougths.

Ed
soon to be a benz owner I think. Hee hee!! :-)

First of all, 27 IS STILL VERY young. No hurry getting married.

To answer your question. My wife was my ex-girlfriends roommate. I
peformed the first and only successful roommate switch. (Seinfeld fans
will know what I am talking about).

I date her roommate for about a year. We broke up and I started dating
my wife. It was weird at first, then the ex-turned crazy and it got
weirder and now I have been married to the good one of the two for
almost 9 years.
