Craig is right about the price jump.

1974 450SEL MSRP $17,400 according to NADA

By 1979, the 6.9 was $45,000 give or take, while the 450SEL was a mere
$30,000 give or take.

I would say somewhat more than $10k.

I bought a '72 220D/8 on 22 Aug 1972 for $7124.50.
I also recall a price increase in the 1974 timeframe, and, if I recall
correctly, it was because of a currency exchange rate change.

Bought the wife a 2005 Mazda 6 new from a local dealer. Great car, put almost
160k on the clock before we parted and it had no repairs required until it had
around 120k. Then it was a couple of COPs and a vacuum leak in the plastic
intake manifold.

Other than regular maintenance, I probably put less than $1000 into repairs in
that car over our ownership.

Great car.

I saw a video of a test (at the NTS, maybe) where a heat-seeking missile
was supposed to fly toward the top of a mountain and hit the
gasoline-fired target suspended on cables. In one case, the heat seeker
broke lock with the gasoline-fired target and locked on a utility
transformer on the top of a "power" pole about half-way from the launch
site to the top of the mountain. People were not happy when the missile
hit and destroyed the power transformer.

Re: [MBZ] NAWCWD

2018-11-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Since these were contractors and often testing for performance related to
designs, accuracy was considered a critical result of the tests, at least the
ones I saw.

I saw a few that missed, and missed significantly. In one case a whole bunker
of testing and video gear was destroyed that was a few hundred yards from the
projected impact point. People were not happy.

Re: [MBZ] NAWCWD

2018-11-16 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
When I was assigned to a ship (early 90's), very rarely did we get to fire
our gun on a range where the target was towed by a boat and the boat was
crewed. They used a really long tow, and the safety measures took a long
time and were very cumbersome, so the whole deal was rather anti-climatic.
The tow was so long that the safety observers could visually see that the
gun barrel was pointing down the bearing of the target and not on the
bearing of the tow boat.

When we did live missile firing exercises, we shot against a drone; the
range was pissed when we actually hit the drone and destroyed it, they
would try hard to fly it so we'd miss and then they could re-use it. A
near miss that didn't damage the drone was a passing grade, the real point
of the exercise was to safely and properly go through all the steps up to
and firing the missile, once it was "off the rails" and the fire control
radar was locked onto the right target, it was a passing grade (assumption
was that the missiles would do what they'd been designed and tested to do,
probably at China Lake).

Yes, I do. I also know that Ford and Mazda make or made a lot of the same cars
that were badged differently depending on the market and manufacturer.

I can’t say I’ve had a bad Ford or Mazda, ever. And I’ve owned most of them
from new.

I drove a Fusion hybrid when the S420 got totaled, and while it was pretty
soulless, it was good transportation and very economical. Not my thing, but it
had merit.

was already a little squirrely getting in and out of camp with just 8". One guy
got stuck and I nearly got stuck a couple times. The trick to driving in that
much snow is to pretend you're making a truck commercial and drive way faster
than you would normally, the guy that got stuck hit a drift without enough
speed to pull through. I pulled him out but it was a hard pull.
Anyway I got home and Angie says "I have bad news, your car is dead." Oh boy,
just what I wanted. She's been driving my car as hers has a turbo actuator
issue thats preventing it from passing inspection. Everything is working fine
its just throwing a code. I should have gotten it fixed this summer, instead
it'll be Monday.

I went out and she's right, its totally dead, no dome light or anything. I
unplugged the seat heater and hooked up the battery charger, the dome light
sprang to life. Today, after leaving the battery charger on all night it sprang
to life no problem.
I've got this aftermarket seat heater that plugs into the 12v port which on my
Jetta is not switched. My car occasionally gives an airbag light, its a dying
heap after all, the light scared Angie, so rather than asking about it she just
drove her car leaving the seat heater plugged in in mine. After 3 days of
trying to heat the car with the seat heater the battery gave up...
Love easy fixes, hopefully this doesn't ruin the battery.

[MBZ] OT - big knife to the rescue

2018-11-16 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
"Homeowner Evan Luongo
said
he was listening to meditation music in his room trying to fall asleep at
about 8 p.m. Monday when he heard glass breaking and someone inside.

He grabbed his machete to investigate and found two teenagers – one with a
BB gun and one with a knife -- in his office.

Luongo told the pair to give up and get on the floor -- and they did. He
then called police.

“I have a shaved head, a crazy beard, I work out, climb mountains, run
races, I’m covered in tattoos and I was in my underwear with a machete. I
think most people are going to comply with that guy,” Luongo said.

Police arrested Adelson Fedna, 19, of Medford, and a 16-year-old Malden
teen. They were charged with armed burglary."

Decent price for a 2009 with under 120k on it from a dealer.
PPI it to death before you drop $10k on it though.

Take off the ML320 Bluetec badges and the stars, put Lexus swoops or Acura
dividers in the circles that used to have stars in them?
Or just say 'you wanted me to get rid of all the junkers and buy one solid car,
so I bought the most versatile one I could find'?

But seriously, you're the one driving it, so as long as she doesn't think it's
a public embarrassment (did I guess right about her opinion of Polei and the
gold/purple car?), what does she care?

If the garage isn't full of non-car stuff, 3 cars in a 2 car garage or 5 in a 3
car can be done without hoists. The extra cars go perpendicular in front of the
daily drivers.
Unfortunately, my '2 car garage' is only 20x22 and it's got a lot of non-car
stuff in it, making it a one car garage.

Nice, I need to do that in my 2-car garage. I think I'd only be able to
fit convertibles (top down) in the upper storage, due to a support beam
that goes across the ceiling of the garage.

Those garage doors are exactly what I need.

My guess is that she may not appreciate your customization of the cars.
I know my wife would not look favourably on the "hot wheels" car or the

If you kept them stock looking, would they be less objectionable? A
reasonably shiny classic Mercedes is generally considered a nice car by

I have several sockets that have had the tapered lip ground off so the hex
grabs immediately for those shallow tight nuts.

Good job Michael. I'm surprised at the low NAPA prices.

Re: [MBZ] That’s the “breaks”

2018-11-16 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Brakes are one of the easiest and most satisfying jobs on a 123 (126
too).  More hassle to get out the jack, jack it up, remove wheels, etc.
than to actually change the brakes.

I have to do all the calipers on this CD I have, I bought them some time
ago and just haven't been over to do the job.  I think I ordered all the
stuff from Advance Auto, coupons and free shipping and such was not too
bad on price.  They let you get the core credit when you take back the
old ones to a store.

Put everything back together and let them gravity feed for about 30 minutes. (I
kept adding fluid to the reservoir as I was working on them). Tightened

If you get a real cruiser, it will have a hard plastic back seat and no carpet.
Makes it easier to hose the back down after the perps have been dropped off at
the jail.
