Both beige palomino (MB-Tex/Leather/Velour) upholstery was available
on the later W123's. Highly unlikely that you have leather or velour, so
look for code 154 (palomino Tex) or 155 (beige Tex) on the radiator
cross member build plate.

Thanks, Chris! I should be able to find some here. Got a question
about the Mercedes floor mats on Ebay. I've heard my wife (who
passed away) call the inside and outside of the '83 240D biege
color. The Ebay mats below are palomino. Looked palomino up on
the 'net and it seems the color can vary between light brown and
golden or darker. The color of the mats shown on Ebay look pretty
close to the color of the 240D. In your opinion, and/or anyone elses,
is the color shown what Mercedes generally refers to as palomino. My
color sense is close to zero. Gerry

[MBZ] Unresponsive lazy car sellers

2013-10-05 Thread Chris James

Hmm No questions or answers have been posted about this item.

Something that really annoys me, it seems like you can't get a hold of
anyone anymore to answer questions or provide even the slightest bit of
additional info about the car they're selling.

You try emailing, you try texting and either can't get a response or
it's I'll get back to you tonight, tomorrow ect. with that and you
never hear from them again!!! Meanwhile the listing is still up. How do
they expect to sell anything if they can't be bothered responding to
potential buyers #frustratedrant

Turbo OM352-A (145hp/295lb-ft)

http://asheville.craigslist.org/hvo/4100878804.html

Don't see many short wheel base MB trunks, most I've seen for sale have
huge cargo boxers or flatbeds. The short nose MB trucks are really
unique looking, too bad they stopped selling them in the late '80s? here
in the US. It would definitely be cool if they re-issued them with
modern equipment! I guess in the '90s D-B decided to focus on their
other brand acquisitions (Freightliner ect.).

Supposedly the US market trucks were assembled here in the US (like the
Sprinter), anyone know by whom or where? They were quite popular in
other parts of the world.

[MBZ] 350SDL on eBay

Seen this 350SDL while browsing eBay. The color caught my eye, don't see
Teal Blue cars too often. But the vid they posted was a total turn off.

OK, we get it, it hauls! Everyone knows the benefits of an Italian
tuneup, but all the revving of the engine racing it around the parking
lot in a for sale vid didn't impress me or befit the car, especially
with the clicking/clacking lifters and/or belt tensioner it just
seemed overly loud in general. That 603 certainly wasn't purring. More
like $60K new 30mpg.keep dreaming!

Still it's a pretty car, just not for their original $8K asking price. I
wonder how much the dealer picked it up at auction for?

Well, there are good dealers bad dealers (and good bad service/parts
departments).

Re-reading Kaleb's post, a chat with the adviser regarding previous
service history, prior to handing over the keys may have prevented the
up-selling improved his experience. Everyone knows those Airmatic
shocks are $$$ (just by themselves) to have replaced at the dealer, no
surprise there.

If you can afford it, I don't see why a new Mercedes diesel should not
be considered enjoyed. The cars now going on 20-30 years are certainly
not issue or trouble free with far more expensive bits that are
needing to be replaced then a new car off the lot would have! :-)

I think Kaleb provided a very good reason earlier when he informed us
as to the level of service received at the local dealer. These things
are as complicated as a modern petrol burner and as such will more
than likely have as many issues, in their electronic management
systems and will have expensive bits that are needing to be replaced
on a regular basis. Anyone that things they will get old school
mechanical Diesel reliability out of these things, could be
mistaken. Then there is the question of how much more these will
cost, compared to a similar MB with a petrol engine?

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2014-mercedes-benz-e250-bluetec-diesel-first-drive-review

It's 2.1L 4cyl turbo diesel is rated at 28/45 MPG! Amazing! You could go
nearly 1000 miles on a single tank! Glad MB finally brought over a
smaller engined diesel E-Class. With a 4matic version to follow no less!

I know, I know, all the new MB's are all ugly, full of plastic, over
complicated no longer special, but seriously who on here wouldn't want
to be able to have one of these parked in your driveway or garage?

Re: [MBZ] Fan clutch

2013-07-13 Thread Chris James

I wondered why they didn't put electric clutches on the larger engined
cars. They are pretty neat perhaps offer better control of engine
temps with a defined on-off signal from the temp switch.

Looked at a W116 300SD for sale once. The owner said he had bolted the
fan to the clutch?, so it turned all the time. Not sure that's such an
ideal fix though.

Hopefully a new clutch will help. Just looked at new OE MSRP for your
617, whoa!

On 7/13/2013 7:49 AM, MG wrote:

All I could see for the 190s is the all electric fan, no clutch there at
all.

Have been having slightly higher then normal temps in the summer ever
since I did a cooling system flush and installed a new thermostat (up to
100 at first and 110 now in Fl with AC at high speeds or around town
with heavy traffic). My thought actually was to try a new thermostat
since that is the most likely suspect (not opening far enough?). It was
brand new from Rusty so I put less of an emphases on that and thought
more of the fan clutch especially since it has been getting worse in the
past year or more. Wish I hadn't thrown away the old thermo so I could
put it in now.

Then again it could have been some crud that got into the radiator from
the engine during the flush.

The whole idea with the electric clutch is just that it's a neat-o cool
thing to have on an engine ( well in my confused mind anyway, no
accounting for tastes is there). That said I do have a new thermo and
clutch on the way but still am in want with the electric clutch thing. :-)

Came across this interesting gray market 500SEL on CL tonight. What
caught my eye was the fact it's sitting so low at all for corners, I'm

It would have to be earlier then '87 though, due to the heated seat

changed the wheels when they imported it or later on.

There was a large contingent of workers, all black men. They worked

dad was an engineer for a local electronics company, which I guess was a
pretty good job, but did not come anywhere close to working at the car

I came home that afternoon and was going on and on about how wonderful
it was that Cleo's dad worked at that car wash. Next time we went I
said I wanted to find out which one was Cleo's dad but my dad would not
let me go bother them. Never did find out but I told Cleo I went there

Huh? I think there are enough carry over exterior design elements on the

Prefer the early W220 myself (styling wise), with the opaque headlights,

Bad vac pod, seal (or both) on the defroster flap? Never encountered

If your running the A/C on the coldest setting, try raising the temp for

anything for condensation.

Here's an interesting article which discusses the short lived 85MPH
speedometer.

Speedometer top speed often exceeds reality

A brief quote from the AP article on Yahoo:

Claybrook concedes there's no data to show the 85 mph limit saved
lives, but she believes it did. She calls the ever-higher speedometer
numbers immoral.

http://news.yahoo.com/speedometer-top-speed-often-exceeds-150136959.html

Mercedes didn't wait for a redesign. The speedometers on all cars were
all changed back to their previous limits for the '83MY! Silly to think
you can make people drive better or safer by lowering speed limits or
speedometer numbers!

Well, being outside the 4yr/50Kmi warranty.at least they paid
something. How disappointing to have that happen though.

Looking back, any warning/symptoms before the chain let go? I think the
defective chain TSB only covers Jul '92 - Apr '94 built models.

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/OM60X/OM60x_Timing_Chain_TSB.pdf

If an original 3.5L OM603 engine has made it 20yrs/150Kmi and currently
has no issues, I would think it's safe to assume it not a Rod bender.
Many did have issues though (usually just outside of the warranty, IIRC)

currently has for special options/trim (which they hide in the ordering
guides, not sure why?), that entails a total additional $250 charge for
the option(s) ordered.

Yes, Kaleb's '95 E300D is both a five seater Special Edition!

It was the Limited Edition '93 190E 2.6 that had the four place
black/red sportline seating package.

The '95 W124, '00 W202 '02 W210 all had Special Edition model's

For 1993 the W201 had two Limited Edition model's.

Finally the 1999 W140 had an S500 Grand Edition

I think that covers all of the '90s '00s sedan model Editions.

First time for me, but had no issues (thankfully) bleeding/flushing the
lines with new syn DOT 3/4 fluid, just by pumping the brake pedal (being
careful not to depress it fully) keeping the reservoir filled.

IIRC I did go through 2-3 (small) bottles making sure all the old brake

Probably should have tried to find 42mm hose.

Re: [MBZ] Response from Trent -- Worldpac problems?

2013-06-11 Thread Chris James

Not always.

It may state Original Equipment Manufacturer show a picture of the
MB part on a Worldpac parts site BUT.Bosch does not always = the
Bosch part spec'd for your MB.

For instance, I can get aftermarket Bosch wiper blades at the local auto
parts store...if I'm ordering online I want the original MB part. There
IS a difference between the two! The MB spec'd blade of course being of
better quality, has better fitment look. Unless your parts suppler is
ordering direct from Mercedes, there is a chance you won't be getting
what your expecting at times.

I ended up having to order another blade washer nozzle from MB to
finally get the right ones for the early W201 I had.

Of course many OEM parts in other situations are fine, belts, hoses,
filters ect.with some MB dealers now offering online parts ordering
with info sourced from the EPC, not sure I'd bother with Worldpac or
anyone else when I have another MB that I need parts for

Some more interesting cars! I enjoyed browsing your local CL, you have
quite the selection to choose from! It would certainly be fun to spend a
day(s?) going looking at all the cars in your locale! :)

This one has got to be at the top of the list!
Beautiful, nearly fully loaded black 1997 E300D (real heated leather,
not Tex! Every option except power rear shade)

2002 C320 (Nicely equipped!):

2000 ML55 (AMG, need I say more!):

2003 CLK320 Cab (last year, well optioned!):

1993 Limited Edition 190E 2.6 (Very nice!):

1987 300E (Nice, if your a fan of DB877 Petrol or Blue/Green!)

Out of state (IL), just came across this 40Kmi 1987 300E? Think I prefer
the DB261 seafoam over the DB877 blue/green. I would expect to drop a
few K's on it getting it mechanically up to snuff due to age/storage
though. Would be a shame to drive it though, a display car really

As to your list, that '94 S350D you found looks interesting too the'98
S420, very well presented probably the best of the lot! Wasn't really
impressed with the E320 Cabs you found though. Save up get a nicer
example that would not need a lot invested in it...if your really
interested in one, I say

Re: [MBZ] Opine away - Limited Edition 190E

2013-06-06 Thread Chris James
No, that is a real Limited Edition! The seller does note that he
wrapped the original trim due to cracking, it's very similar to the
original though. I'm surprised you've never heard of them or seen one.
700 each were produced of the 190E 2.3 2.6 for the '93 MY. There was
no charge for the additional equipment totaling around $3K, a steal really!

The 2.3 came in monotone metallic emerald green w/ cream beige leather
additional burl wood trim, the 2.6 in two tone black w/ black red
leather sport seats carbon fiber trim. Easily recognizable by the 8
hole rims headlight wipers, which at the time were either not
available (in the case if the rims) or rarely seen on the standard 190.

Despite the handling upgrades sport seats/trim on the 2.6 Limited
Edition it did not have Sportline exterior badging, also the standard
model designation was omitted on the trunk lid of both models. The 2.6
did have a Sportline gearshift knob though.

A look back at the 1993 Mercedes 190E 2.6 Limited Edition - a classic
ahead of its time.

Why no Sportline badges on the front fenders?
Did the Sportline seats have those red inserts in them in 1993?
I'd have to take a close look at my 16v and 2.5 turbo before I could say
whether it's got the Sportline sized steering wheel.

The shift knob doesn't look leather, but I'm not familiar with auto
tranny Sportlines, I always used to look for manuals.

I don't think those wheels came from a W201.
That 'carbon fiber' in the dash looks aftermarket to me.

I'm thinking that somebody got a hold of a four passenger seat set and
modified a non-Sportline car's interior, and stuck W124 wheels on it.

Mitch.
