Does anybody have a shift rod from a
201 sitting around?  Im working on this 190D that had
the blown out missing flex disk, and the shift rod is
MIA.  I do not have anything in my stock that will
work, apparently its a 201 thing only.

Re: [MBZ] W123 fenders available via CA Classic Center

2009-08-01 Thread Christopher McCann
It is kinda slow. We've sold about $1,600 in stuff the past month. But,
considering that it's not ours and we get 50% and it doesn't take too long,
it's worth it. If we were buying and reselling, it would not even be close to
worthwhile.

I was looking at your other items,
and while they are probably a good price, the way things are
now, and the way ebay sucks, you cant hardly give that stuff
away.  In fact, I have not listed a single thing on
ebay all year.  I just have not had time to do anything
with cars at all, just have not felt like it.  Maybe I
should get rid of half my fleet.

Re: [MBZ] cash for clunkers recycling

2009-08-01 Thread Christopher McCann
Interestingly, because of the 25 year old clause, my rusting-to-pieces W115
240D is not a clunker, but my very nice '85 300SD is a clunker...although maybe
not because of better than 18 mpg fuel economy...unless the EPA says different.

An article in the local paper today
said that the engines had to be trashed, but the rest of the
cars could be recycled.  But it was an AP article, so
take it for what it is worth.  I wonder how many Benzes
of certain ages might be showing up for trade-ins?
Scrap value for a chassis with trashed engine? Can't be more
than a couple hundred these days?  That might free up
some nice parts.  You on that Kaleb?

So I'm taking it a California one has bad emissions

What do you mean about the air filter digits?

Re: [MBZ] Injection pump 1984 300D

2009-07-05 Thread Christopher McCann

loping slightly at idle is almost certainly (esp. if at HOT idle, like after
coming off the highway) the rack damper bolt.

Hard start could be a bad glow plug or, more likely, the valves need to be
adjusted.

I would definitely check these things first.

What are the symptoms of a worn or
improperly working injection pump in a 1984 300D.  My
car (260,000 miles)has been losing power over the last year,
is beginning to start hard and lopes slightly at idle.
I have replaced filters and have put in rebuilt injectors
 (local bosch injector service)in recently.
Is there a way to test one while still in the car?

 Thanks,
 Mike

These are golden.  Anything for a W100 chassis is
worth a small fortune - just look at the M100 Web site some
time.  You know the secret handshake, don't you?

Hold out for the $800 BIN - I'm willing to bet you'll get
it - someone is just trying to get a deal and assumes you
 don't know what they're worth.

Worst case scenario you can relist.

I've dealt with these guys with two former MBs, and Todd's
 quote is spot on:

I know what the M-100 secret handshake is: The rare and
elusive US $1,000 bill. This is just like the secret Masonic
handshake. You come up to someone that you suspect may have
an M100, and extend your right hand with a $1,000 bill
cupped in your hand and smoothly pass it on. If the person
looks down, and says WOW, I've never SEEN so much money in
my LIFE, you immediately grab it back and continue on. If
they say Huh, this is what I spent on my turn signal
repair, you embrace them warmly. - Todd Knutson

I kid you not, the prices for the parts on these things are
nothing short of obscene, and if you've got NOS stuff,
you're sitting on a gold mine.  Hold out for every
penny, 'cause eventually they'll cave, as this stuff cannot
be had unless they go to the factory and pay out the bottom,
if it's even available.  And rest assured, these people
have the money - it's just difficult separating it from
them, and they prey on those who don't understand the value
of these parts.  I would opine that the person who
offered you $600 for the pair already had a buyer at a
 (much) higher price.

I'll reserve my opinion somewhat, suffice to say that the
few dealings I've had with M100 people were not pleasant.

SO, I'm friends with the owner of the local Indy shop. He just moved from one
part of KC to another, after 26 years in the same location. He asked me if I'd
like to help him sell his old stock. SURE!

So I started putting some stuff up on Ebay this weekend. If you're interested,
here is the auction number of one item: 200357443812
from there, you can click to see my other auctions.

There are THOUSANDS of parts to sell, so if you're looking for something, let
me know (part number is nice, but I'll try to find it for you if you don't
know). I'll let you know if I have the part. I am free to set the price, as
long as it's reasonable. The owner wants the parts OUT of the warehouse, so I
can pretty much beat any other price.

Some rare things in there (tail lights for 600 limo) to brand new 123 fenders.
Most stuff is genuine MB, but some is aftermarket.

Chris

Are you serious? Prolly my favorite car mag. You used to be able to get a
subscription, but they stopped distributing it to individuals in the US, so now
you have to get it for, like $8/issue at BN. But it's great.

[MBZ] a question about EPC use...HELP!

2009-06-24 Thread Christopher McCann

If I have a part number, will the EPC tell me what US models (with year) that
the part goes into? If so, how do you do that?

I've been able to use the 'part search without vehicle data' to take a part
number and then find the engine number (if an engine part), the trans number
(if a trans part) and the chassis number (six digit, if not an engine part or a
trans part). That's better than nothing as I can then go here:
http://www.egermanparts.com/mercedes-chassis_90-92.html and figure out the
model designation and year, BUT I want to eliminate having to go to that chart
if the EPC will tell me that info.

And, when looking up a non-engine, non-trans part number, it does give the
model designation of the chassis the part belongs to, but not the year, so I
still have to go to the chart.

Can anyone help me out here?

THANKS!

Re: [MBZ] 2 things -- 300SD

2009-06-14 Thread Christopher McCann

There are two trans fluid cooler lines that go forward to the trans fluid
cooler at the bottom of the radiator. I have seen them leak before...make sure
the one on the left is not rubbing on the oil drain back tube. Also, if the
trans is over filled, it might come out the trans vent.

The 180 degree air hose should not have crud in it...maybe too much blowby...do
you have the MEYLE upgraded breather hose? If not, that will probably help.

I have refilled the tranny 2 times
now, tranny fluid is leaking somewhere.  Is there a
tranny cooler?  It looks like some lines come forward
from the tranny that are covered with fluid.  I have
not had the car up on ramps yet (I know, I know), just
wondered if anyone might have some thoughts on what a
regular leak might spring from.  Tranny shifts fine, so
I think it is OK functionally.

Yesterday I replaced the air cleaner mounting bracket (and
the broken one looked like a replacement as well, with the
Benz sticker on it explaining it was Qualitat), took off
the 180deg turbo inlet bend.  The whole thing was all
crapped up with dirty oily stuff, and the turbo inlet seemed
to have some oily gunk in it too, and some on the
vanes.  It spins fine, but I was wondering if spraying
something up in there to clean it would be a good
idea.  Maybe some EFI intake cleaner or carb cleaner a
little bit at a time?  I don't want to get the engine
running away or anything.  I would presume it would be
best to do that with the engine running?  Or would I do
it engine off, and just vacuum or wipe out whatever crap
 runs off?

Oh, and I just glued up the wood piece on the front of the
ashtray to the ashtray with some Gorilla Glue, it had been
stuck on there with what looked like black roofing
tar.  I cleaned all that off with some turpentine, and
sanded it all lightly, I'll give it a couple hours to set
up.  90F today, that should go quick.

 Thanks

That's a pic of the updated breather hose - 1 piece of rubber that is flat in
the center and has little baffles inside that retard the flow of blowby oil.
You probably have the old plastic pipe version and as the engine ages, you are
getting a little more blowby and it is getting to the turbo.

Well you are spot on about the tranny
cooler line -- the one under the
A/C compressor next to the oil pan has been rubbed through
 where the
little bracket holds it, took off the bracket, cleaned it
 up, looked
like a little fluid was dripping there, fired the car up
 and it looked
like I had stabbed a jugular.  Gonna put some epoxy on
 it for the time
until I can get a new line.

I don't know how I would tell about MEYLE breather hose,
 but yeah, I'm
guessing the oil is coming from the valve cover into the
 little can
thing in the air cleaner, and migrating from there.

the german spends most of her day
enjoying the great outdoors in my large
fenced area of weds.  i slept between 8pm and 11pm and
 then got up to check
 email.

i let the dogs out and about 20 minutes ago, invited them
 back in.  the
german proudly had what i guess to be  a 3/4s dead
 baby possum in her mouth,
ran into the house with it, and jumped into the kid's bed
 with it,
depositing it there as the kid slept.

ok, never in my life have i heard such blood curdling
 hysterical screams as
 i've just encountered.

kids and dogs are just not always a winning combination

i used to use my backyard all the time, but don't even go
 back there anymore
as it is just the killing fields out there.  i've
 never seen a beast with
the sort of prey drive the german has.

you'd think this might make for a good guard dog, but no
 such luck either.
she simply LOVES all people.  and HATES all other

There are two 190D 2.2s in the Kansas City PNP. There was one last month too,
but it's gone now. Neither are picked over very much. One is a 4 speed and the
other is an automatic.

FYI

Re: [MBZ] 190D 2.2's in PNP

2009-04-19 Thread Christopher McCann

I can't be sure since they are in the PNP, but both engines are clean and look
OK. One was abandoned, according to the sticker on the windshield.

Actually, the one that was there last month was a 2.5 non-turbo...manual also,
I think.

I have a vegetarian friend at work who is looking for soup

He wouldn't mind a chicken broth base, but he would prefer

I put a request for a resistor assembly for the blower on an
'83 300D Turbo on the bottom of someone elses request
for parts and that was probably a mistake, so here's the
 request again:

I need the resistor unit which is inside a cage and sits on
the right wheel well under the hood on an '83 300D
 Turbo.
This works with the solid state blower speed control module
 above the glove box.
 I initially thought that only the solid state modules;
pushbutton, heat control module, and blower speed control
module; were all that got fried when everything shorted out
on the climate control system; but I'm now thinking I
ought to replace the resistor module as well just to be on
the safe side. (I've already found the solid state
 replacement units.)

This is going to be a puckery situation when I fire up the
restored system the first time since nothing on the MB
electrical repair manual checks out on resistance, ground,
or hot versus wire number. I'm still playing with it
and trying to make heads or tails of it, but there are
something like 30+ wires going to plugs on the four units.

I can send you a check, money order, or pay you via paypal.
 Thanks,

OK, that problem solved - what I was thinking, maybe I could
by a set of headlights from a wrecker in UK for instance and
have them shipped here? After seeing prices around the US a
set runs around $300 or more. They must have plenty of
these in UK - as long as shipping is acceptable maybe I can
get a set and save some $$s.

Anyone try something like that? I imported MG parts from
UK in the mid 80s (pound vs dollar was favorable) and resold
them. Haven;t done anything like that except for a couple
hundred Porsche posters I bought from Germany.

Going to lunch today, I noticed a couple of spots of oil
right under the front of the car. I looked and found that
the lower connection to the oil cooler seems to be leaking.
Can't quite tell if the connection is leaking, or if the
oil is seeping through the rubber hoses and running down
onto the connector. There is oil on the hoses too.

This might explain why my oil consumption has gone up a bit
lately with no symptoms of actually burning oil. Seems I
recall that replacing oil cooler lines is a PITA. What am I
 in for?

Re: [MBZ] OM617 leaking oil from cooler lines

2009-02-13 Thread Christopher McCann

Yes, you have the engine shock...two, I think.

Now there is the shock and the shock mount. Shock is about $35 and the shock
mount is like $75...check buymbparts. If you need new engine mounts, you very
well may need new shock mounts too...especially if they got oil on them and
turned to rubbery-jello.

I think there is a shock mount rebuild kit which is better than buying a new
shock mount.

Personally, I would rebuild the shock mounts and replace the shocks even if
they are still good. They do go bad and you will be right there to do the work
easily.

Well, Diesel Purge isn't very potent if you run it
 through in a tank of
fuel (even two bottles in a tank). It was designed to be
 run through the
engine straight (disconnecting the hoses and running on
 JUST DP with the
supply and return hoses in the DP bottle). If the engine
 starts
instantly sometimes and take several turns sometimes, then
 fuel is slow
getting to the engine properly. That could be the injection
 pump
misbehaving (not likely, but possible) or an injector or
 two that are
less then optimal. It COULD be several other things too,
 but a really
clean engine running on synthetic oil seldom behaves this
 way except
from a fuel problem. If you use conventional oil, then
 I'd recommend
that you change to synthetic and see if that makes a
 difference
especially in how fast the engine cranks over and starts.
 This will take
many thousands of miles for all the benefits to max out,
 but it's
improved every one of my engines more then ANY other thing
 I've ever
done to them (other the replacing BROKEN parts or
 connecting things that
 were disconnected or plugged up).

There is ONE final CHEAP trick I use when nothing else
 seems to work
(and it DOES work more the 50% of the time) and I've
 run out of
inexpensive ideas. Put a qt of 10W30 conventional motor oil
 in the fuel
tank and drive the car (hard at least a little of the
 time). The engine
should seem quite smooth, but ever slightly lower in power
 with the oil
in the fuel. When the tank is nearly empty refill with just
 #2 and see
if the engine doesn't have more power and is smoother
 then before and
 usually starts faster?

Having researched the 123LWb for several years before
purchasing one myself, I learned a lot about both the gas
and diesel versions. The diesels were designed specifically
for taxi service, and were purposely geared for driving in
 city traffic.

Many (more like most) of the 123LWB diesels that made it
over here did so after they were taken out of service as
commercial vehicles in western Europe, mostly in Belgium
 from what I could tell.

I'm a little surprised this one has MBTex rather than
velour or cloth, which was typically used, but then again,
you could order them any way you wanted.

At least it has manual climate control. It should also
have 15 wheels, rather than the stock 14.

Not sure - and that would be important. I have a guy asking me about a rear
door for an 89 300SE and I don't have one, but the pick n pull here has quite a
few 126's - SD's and SELs. The SELs won't work, but the SDs might...but if the
decorative panel does not match, that won't work either.

Hmm...

I've also got a nice Montblanc collection - ballpoint, rollerball, mechanical
pencil and fountain pen from the Meisterstueck Platinum line. I love the

write VERY well for a $28 pen...and you don't have to worry about dropping it

Hi Peter - I love fountain pens, and have a dip well set I
 use on my desk at
times, plus a couple of other desk sets. I often keep a
 fountain pen in my
pocket, and enjoy writing with them. My favorite for
 writing is a gold Mont
Blanc with matching roller ball. The best deal I found was
 a old gold
Waterman set [fountain pen and pencil] from someone in
 Columbia a few years
ago when the economy had turned bad for them and few people
 trusted sellers
from there. I decided to give it a try - for $28 - and
 have enjoyed them.
They can also be a PITA.

 rollerball,
mechanical pencil and fountain pen from the Meisterstueck
 Platinum line. I
love the fountain pen. I bought Lamy's (also German)
 for my 2 oldest
daughters and they write VERY well for a $28 pen...and you
 don't have to
worry about dropping it or someone using it, etc.

2009-01-27 Thread Christopher McCann
What's the story with iridium tips on the nibs? Montblanc claims to use iridium
points, then I did some research and I read that lots of pens claim iridium
nibs but very very few really use iridium. I asked Montblanc customer service
if they use real iridium and I never got a response. What is so special about
iridium and why do some companies claim to use it when they don't...and why
don't they if it is so great. I mean it can't be s expensive that you
couldn't put a gram of it in a $600 pen.

 Ed,

 Makes perfect sense.

You can find fountain pens in the calligraphy section of
 most hobby shops
that write different widths depending on the direction you
 are drawing the
pin. My issue with these is that they force you to hold the
 pen at a very
specific angle to the paper. You can also find supplies in
 the same section,
 including some cartridges.

Use the pens you have and I believe you'll find that
 the writing style you
are looking for will appear as the nib wears down. The nib
 starts rounded,
leaving very narrow lines on the paper. As the nib wears,
 the lines drawn
from side to side start to lengthen.

I have two pens which I've used for years. I also have
 one of my
Grandfather's, but the bladder is super dry. Glad to
 hear there are places
to find replacements. I'll use the pen once in awhile
 if only writing a
couple of lines, like signing a card or something, by
 dipping the nip in a
ink well. I'd really like to get it restored, and the
 nib gives a really
classic 40's look to the writing.

I don't know enough about them to shop for what I would
 really like, but I'd
like to find a new pen with a nib that is less rigid, that
 allowed for
different thickness on the up and down strokes. As much as
 I like my pens,
the nibs are too rigid, and the pen doesn't respond at
 all to different
pressures applied to it, if that makes sense?

[MBZ] ADVICE NEEDED ASAP...KALEB!???!! ANYONE?!?!?!?

2009-01-25 Thread Christopher McCann
Kaleb (or anyone else),

You remember the $350 '82 300SD...well, I have it on CL for $1650:

http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/1004824610.html

A guy with an '87 300E came to look at it last night. Turns out, he has it on
CL too:

http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/998880287.html

He doesn't buy, but calls back today and wants to trade - even swap. He needs a
running car and fears that he will not get anything for the 300E as it has a
cold start problem that he cannot solve. He's replaced 6 injectors, rotor and
distributor. (PO did valve job and timing chain). Anyway, I did a little
research on 300E cold start problem and it is clear that he has not addressed
some of the simplest things - cold start valve, temp sensor, bunch of other
things to check first.

I am inclined to do this trade as it could be a really simple fix...seems that
it is LIKELY to be a simple fix. OTOH, it could be expensive and complicated.

I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH GASSERS, SO I DONT KNOW IF IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO GO
AHEAD AND TRADE. I have a 7:30 meeting to look at it. Appartently has almost no
rust, nice interior, fast, drives well, blah blah.

THOUGHTS?

Thanks for the input. This seemed to be a no brainer, but I hesitate to get
involved with gassers...I don't know what I'm doing...but it seems this guy
doesn't either.

Yeah, kind of ballsy to ask $1,650 for a car that I paid $350 for just 3 weeks
ago...strange thing is that the guy asked me how much I have into it and I told
him about $500 - which is pretty much true (more like $400). He test drove it
and I was totally honest about everything...well, you saw the ad, I lay it all
out. Now, if I get the 300E and sell it for a decent profit, I will have some $
to invest in my transmission project...transmission jack, some special tools,
lifetime supply of trans Assemblee Goo, etc.

Will let the list know if I trade for the 300E...if I do, I'll have a bunch of
troubleshooting questions.

holy crap, I cant believe you are going to try and get that
much for that $350 car. AFter getting it to not overheat
anymore etc, I could see it maybe being a 6-800 car to
somebody, but I cant see somebody paying anywhere close to
1650. In any case, I would jump on the chance to trade it
off for a much nicer (from the pics) 300E.

Typically this is a vacuum leak or a bad O2 sensor that
responds differently at high temperature than at low
 (relatively, of course).

One thing that I've found to be a real problem most
people don't know about is the o-ring seal on the
injector holder, the plastic insert into the manifold. They
get rock hard and shrink just like all the other MB rubber
bits, and not everyone knows they are there. I discovered
this when I started started replacing the injector seals in
the TE -- two of the holders pulled out instead of the
injectors pulling out of the holder! Ran much much better
with all the seals and boots fixed.

This includes vacuum servos too, by the way. Dead servos
in the ACC or bad connectors on the hard lines can give you
 idle problems.

The duty cycle is adjusted by getting a reading a
2500prm and then comparing this to the one at idle, it
should be within 10. Just setting to 50 at idle may well do
damage because the motor could be running lean at operating
 revs.
MB do not give a specific figure to set the duty cycle
at because as the system ages it will change, when
everything was new the duty cycle may well have been 50 at
idle and 50 at 2500rpm but as an example, mine is at about
 35. I may have issues somewhere but that is where I could
get the two readings to be within 10% of each other.

Check for and repair vacuum leaks, most important
are idle control valve hoses and boot between throttle body
 and air flow meter horn.

Make sure someone didn't fix the
vacuum leaks by messing with the idle mixture -- set it to
50% at idle warm -- if it's too lean, it will never
 start cold.

Clean the air flow meter horn venturi -- a bunch
of crud in there (from the leaking boot) will cause it to
stick cold, and hence no fuel and no start.

Verify that the EHA is getting correct current - a
bad wire will result in no cold enrichement and hard starts.

Excellent. Look forward to it.

I received a really good 722.3.4 rebuild manual today. 100 pages, all in
plastic page protectors and very easy to use, conversational language. Tons of
pictures, lots of helpful notes and suggestions. Apparently this trans is far
easier to rebuild than the 722.1.2, at least that's what this manual says.

Tony,

Thanks for your thoughtful e-mail. It is a major boost of confidence to know
that this can be done DIY. I'm putting a copy of your e-mail with the rebuild
manual so I remember your suggestions and caveats.

In addition to the factory manual and the ATSG (Automatic Transmission Service
Group) manual, I received today a copy of Mercedes 722.3/722.4 by Greg
Catanzaro. It is really excellent and in easy to read language.

BTW, did you replace your brake bands? I haven't had the chance to research
this yet, but I have already seen conflicting advice of 1) ALWAYS replace the
bands 2) Only replace if worn out as the replacement bands are nowhere near as
good as the originals.

Thanks!

I've got almost all that already. There is a very
 nice spring compressor
that you can buy which looks really handy.

Yes, the 722.4 and .3 are very similar. They are
 covered in the same ASTG
  rebuild manual that I bought...

 http://www.atsg.biz/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=actioncategory=EIMPkeywords=allpricecode=passsubnum=

So, you obviously rebuilt a 722.4 - did you have any
 trans rebuilding
experience before you did it? Did you use a manual to
 guide you through? If
  so, which one?

It's amazing that the clutch disks last as long as
they do. Now that I have
a bit of a clue how the automatic trans works,
I've changed my view on them
a bit. They don't really break at 200,000
miles the wear pieces just wear
out. Of course, the hard parts can break, but that is
 not usually the case,
  it seems.

 Chris-

This was my first. I'd gone through the service
 literature a few times and
found it most helpful. Other than that it was basic follow
 the directions,
document anything special, bag parts/assemblies from like
 areas and document
where those were (writing notes in the directions)- pretty
 basic stuff.
Get lots of little containers to sequester parts. Use a
 digital camera to
take lots of pictures through the teardown.

In my case I use the top of a folding table covered with
 three layers of
plastic. My only wish is that the table had a lip to
 contain the fluid you
WILL lose- no matter what you do you'll still have ~ a
 half quart inside the
box. You'll need lots of rags, preferably lint-free
 ones. I got away with
paper towels, but cleaned the inside of the case with rags
 and pieces with
rags (not paper towels) on reassembly. I found and used a
 tub of
transmission assembly lube, which being quite viscous was
 quite useful in
certain areas where o-rings etc might have wanted to move
 about a bit. Also
VERY useful when mating the valve body back into the box.
 Other than
dropping the whole valve body (keep track of which bolts go
 where) I didn't
do any further disassembly; figured 1) it didn't have
 issues before; 2)
there are a whole MESS of parts, balls, pins, springs etc
 to cause grief
given half a chance and 3) if there was a problem, I can
 quite easily get
 the body back out.

I deliberately did the transmission on a weekend the
 family was out of town
for a weekend so I could focus, concntrate and take my
 time. But overall it
was straightforward. If you've tackled something like
 ball joints where you
need to assemble plumbing fittings to press in the joint,
 you've got a good
head start on the kinds of things you'll need to get
 creative on.

While I'd always love an excuse for more tools, most of
 the special tools
for the transmission would not be terribly useful
 otherwise.

I really was amazed at how little wear there was. Even on
 the B3 brake
assembly, at least two of the friction discs still had
 visible imprinted ink
on them. Only two were significantly worn.

After everything is back in you'll need to dial in the
 modulator; there is a
MB gauge set for this but you can also use a banjo bolt
 used on some M103
thermostat housings as a purge fitting; this fitting, some
 1/4 PVC
(nprmally rated to 50 PSI, right around where you need to
 be) and an
accurate gauge will help you dial in the pressures.

If you go to the page above and read the second post, you'll see that Hit Man

about? Is that something in the service manual or is there more detailed info
somewhere else? And, does anybody have the document he's talking about? I
joined the forum so I can try to contact him, but I haven't been approved yet.

Awesome! Thanks. Now I don't need to join the Schuman list.

I thought he might be a little strange because of his avatar...not much Benz

2009-01-16 Thread Christopher McCann
Between this video and another I ordered and the manuals - factory and ATSG and
another one - I think learning this is not impossible...even if I have to
attempt it several times.

Looked on CL in KC today for a trans tech advertising on the side - I found one
that looks good. I am going to call him and see if he'd take a couple days to
walk me through this...basically give me and Charlie a 722.3 tranny rebuild
course over a couple days. It's gonna cost (unless he wants to swap for the
$350 SD), but it will be worth it.

Need to post some pics of that. Need to rearrange my garage into trans shop
mode too. No room right now.

BTW, I am looking for a used transmission table/transmission workbench. Search
ebay if you don't know what that is. If anyone has one for sale or sees one for
sale, let me know. I could make one - the new ones are too small.

I'm holding off on the tools till I figure out exactly what I need. Baum tools
has a Mercedes Transmission tools section in their catalog. Seems like most are
for 722.6+ transmissions. Then there are some simple tools that are useful with
any trans (various pics, etc). Will have my Bavarian friend Paul price all the
MB trans tools I need. Might be cheaper to buy them in Germany and ship them
here than buy them from an importer...should probably check ebay.de for
Getriebe Werkzeug Mercedes - transmission tool Mercedes. Need to get tranny
lube gel too - parts installation lubricant.

That would be great. I would have had to have paid someone put it on DVD as I
can't watch VHS, so it works out really well for me.

DAVE, make sure to tell us all when it is available to watch.

I don't think the video is available for purchase anymore...maybe we could put
it on youtube? Technically it's still the property of the creator, but since it
is no longer available, I don't have scruples about making it available to
people who need the info. Not like we'd be making money off it.

Re: [MBZ] transmission repair factory PDF

2009-01-16 Thread Christopher McCann
I've got almost all that already. There is a very nice spring compressor that
you can buy which looks really handy.

Yes, the 722.4 and .3 are very similar. They are covered in the same ASTG
rebuild manual that I bought...
http://www.atsg.biz/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=actioncategory=EIMPkeywords=allpricecode=passsubnum=

So, you obviously rebuilt a 722.4 - did you have any trans rebuilding
experience before you did it? Did you use a manual to guide you through? If so,
which one?

It's amazing that the clutch disks last as long as they do. Now that I have a
bit of a clue how the automatic trans works, I've changed my view on them a
bit. They don't really break at 200,000 miles the wear pieces just wear out.
Of course, the hard parts can break, but that is not usually the case, it seems.

 one I can remember is
 a 3/4 drive 1 3/16 socket (12 point) that worked
 quite nicely on the output
shaft nut. Already had that, thanks to my Dad who used to
 use it on olde
Beetle rear hubs. Was the first time I'd used that,
 though!

You will need an assortment of internal/external ring
 pliers and an
assortment of pics (think dental instruments). Used some
 pipe fittings to
compress the ~ 16 springs that are part of the front pump.
 While this was
 all on a 722.4xx box I don't think the .3xx is much
 different, other than in
how the governor locking mechanism works- a rotating paw in
 the .3xx, an
 internal clip on the .4xx

There are special tools to establish proper gaps in each of
 the clutch
packs. The new friction discs are a set thickness but you
 set the exact gap
by replacing the steels- these are available in variable
 thicknesses. On
mine the B3 discs (reverse) were the most worn. In that
 set there was
perceptable wear in the steels- of the total increase in
 gap of the whole
set about 15% was due to wear of the steels. But since
 there was no
excessive discoloration of the steel I reused them. My
 thought was that OK
this time the tranny may only go another 200k instead of
 the 300k it went
the first time. And there was a differance- reverse took
 about a half
second to engage instead of being nearly instantaneous.
 But given that it
USED to take 3-5 seconds I was OK with that!

You know there is more to it that replacing the clutches,
the valve body will also need some attention most likely at
 this point.

 Christopher McCann wrote:

Yes, the 722.4 and .3 are very similar. They are
covered in the same ASTG rebuild manual that I bought...
 http://www.atsg.biz/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=actioncategory=EIMPkeywords=allpricecode=passsubnum=

So, you obviously rebuilt a 722.4 - did you have any
trans rebuilding experience before you did it? Did you use a
manual to guide you through? If so, which one?

It's amazing that the clutch disks last as long as
they do. Now that I have a bit of a clue how the automatic
trans works, I've changed my view on them a bit. They
don't really break at 200,000 miles the wear
pieces just wear out. Of course, the hard parts can break,
but that is not usually the case, it seems.

It means its able to roll up to 2000 lbs. If you are
talking about those little portable ones, those work just
fine pulling a car up on a car dolly or something. Forget
about dragging a dead wrecked car with 4 flat tires up on a
car trailer though, you need a big heavy duty wench like I

You have springy bars that latch into the hitch head, and
run below the tongue with chains bending them up towards the
tongue. Transfers weight from the back wheels of the tow
vehicle to the front wheels and trailer wheels.

Re: [MBZ] TRAILER block heater for Chris

2009-01-15 Thread Christopher McCann
Thanks for explaining that. Now I can see why it's not enough to move the car
back on the trailer till the trailer doesn't put much weight on the
tongue...that shifts too much mass to the rear causing swerving and
unsteadiness.

Best is to move 50% of the mass forward, if not more, and use the weight
distribution hitch to distribute the weight of the car back to the trailer.

Do I have that right?

Chris

To make a trailer dynamically stable, at least 10% of the
 mass
needs to be in front of the trailer axles. 15% is better.
 50%
 is best (it's then called a semi-trailer
 -like the big
trucks use - rather than a full trailer). With
 a majority of
the mass in front of the trailer axle, side-to-side
disturbances tend to be self-canceling. With more mass
 behind
the axle, the oscillations self re-enforce. This is a
 common
cause of upside-down trailers jack-knifed in the ditch.

 With a ordinary hitch, mass = weight. So a 2,000 lb (900
 kg)
trailer and a 4,400 lb (2,000 kg) car on it the gross
 weight
of the trailer is 6,400 lb (2,900 kg). 15% of that is 960
 lb
(435 kg). That's how much weight will be on the very
 back of
your van. It _will_ raise the front.

The solution is weight distributing. It is a
 bulky hitch
assembly that's commonly seen on camper trailers. With
 the aid
of one or two spring bars, tension is applied at the hitch
point lifting the back of the tow vehicle. The result is
 some
of the weight is distributed to the trailer and
 steer axles
 - but the mass stays so the stability is not affected.

Now that I have one, I can't see ever doing without it
 - at
least when the trailer gross is more than 1/2 the truck
 weight.

2009-01-15 Thread Christopher McCann
I don't plan on having too many. I think I have 9 right now and it hasn't been
a problem. I have three lots and a privacy fence. I doubt I will have more than
15 at any time.

The plan is: Charlie and I learn how to rebuild transmissions, buy decent MBs
with shot trannys, remove rebuild replace tranny, sell car. So its not that I
plan to have a lot of cars, but the cars I buy will need a trailer.

So far, I've had to pay for tows. I've found a guy that will tow for me in the
metro area for $50, which is pretty good, but then I can't go after cars that
are outside the city. Remember that St. Louis is as far from me as KC from you.

ramp to the second floor. We'll stash things there to if we need to. It's empty
and we've got the OK from the owner.

where are you going to put all these cars you are hauling?

That sounds really nice. What is a weight
 distribution
  hitch?
To make a trailer dynamically stable, at least 10%
 of the
  mass
needs to be in front of the trailer axles. 15% is
 better.
  50%
is best (it's then called a
 semi-trailer
  -like the big
trucks use - rather than a full
 trailer). With
  a majority of
the mass in front of the trailer axle,
 side-to-side
disturbances tend to be self-canceling. With more
 mass
  behind
the axle, the oscillations self re-enforce. This
 is a
  common
cause of upside-down trailers jack-knifed in the
 ditch.

With a ordinary hitch, mass = weight. So a 2,000
 lb (900
  kg)
trailer and a 4,400 lb (2,000 kg) car on it the
 gross
  weight
of the trailer is 6,400 lb (2,900 kg). 15% of that
 is 960
  lb
(435 kg). That's how much weight will be on
 the very
  back of
your van. It _will_ raise the front.

  The solution is weight distributing.
 It is a
  bulky hitch
assembly that's commonly seen on camper
 trailers. With
  the aid
of one or two spring bars, tension is applied at
 the hitch
point lifting the back of the tow vehicle. The
 result is
  some
of the weight is distributed to the
 trailer and
  steer axles
  - but the mass stays so the stability is not
 affected.

Now that I have one, I can't see ever doing
 without it
  - at
least when the trailer gross is more than 1/2 the
 truck
  weight.

No I don't - and you live outside of town and I'm in the city...but if you add
the concrete dealership and Charlie's place, we have a ton of room. But I
really don't want as many cars as you have, I just need to be able to go after
a few here and there that have shot trannys...of course I have to learn how to
rebuild the 722.3 first.

Is 18 foot long enough? I know a car will fit, but is it convenient?

Re: [MBZ] TRAILER block heater for Chris

2009-01-14 Thread Christopher McCann
OK guys, I've revised my criteria. No home made, must have title (usually the
home made ones are the ones w/o title), must have ramps and be very beefy...and
no damage (I've seen several damaged trailers cheap...don't want a trailer that
swerves all over).

What do y'all suggest as a minimum length? I would think that an SDL/SEL would
be the longest thing hauled.

If there is no winch, where do you mount one? A lot of the winches seem to be
2,000 lb...a W126 is heavier than that and a 116 300SD is probably even
heavier...will a 3,000 lb. winch do the job?

Chris
