Or the VW Tourag. When they were doing the V10 rocketship I kind of got it.
The 3.0l doesn't excite me.

Oh wait, I just looked it up, stock early 3.0l is 220hp/406#ft. Later is
240/406. Stage 1 tune takes that to 280/427 and 305/490 respectively.Sounds
like that'd be real fun in an older pickup. Maybe something like a '60s vintage
full size Jeep...
The V10 is actually a little disappointing, 313/553. Not that those numbers
aren't nice, they're just not that much more than the 3.0l...

get it running in a new chassis with the original key is tricky.

I guess there might be dealers that want to see the car, but I would think that
is the exception rather than the rule. Consider how many instances where it
wouldn’t be possible to bring the car in, or what an inconvenience it would be.
I’m sure that policy would get hammered after MBUSA got a few calls.

The form they fill out (a “safety” form) for keys that I’ve seen only requires
copies of ID that match the registration or title provided. So if I show up at
the dealer with my driver’s license and a title and the information matches,
they’ll sell me a key. Granted, my dealer knows me and will even order a key
without ID from me - but will require it upon delivery and before giving it to
me - there’s not a whole lot more they can do to assure you’re a legit owner.

Interesting idea.
IIRC, the 1200, 510,610,710, and B210 were all RWD, so you'd just need to deal
with motor mounts, shift linkage and driveshaft.

The 1980 Mazda GLC/323 was about the end of RWD economy cars in the USA.

If it weren't for all the LUV and P'up owners buying up the engines, a diesel
Chevette would have made a decent, if low powered, donor for a Metro.

I was just looking on TDIClub and somebody has done 67mpg in real world
driving with a 2013. The 2015 has a different engine and should do slightly
better. Best I've done so far was 56 or so. Thats to work and back which is an

Time to create the wreck in reverse.
Unbolt the hood, once you get it open, Pull the front grill and bumper, so
you can get to the frame structure and have a good look for wrinkled paint
[indicates frame bends, if any] Drill 3/8 hole where the sheet metal needs
pulled forward, put a metal plate behind the bolt so it doesn't pull
through the skin, or wide area washers. bolt through a link of chain of the
pull side, and get your 3 ton come along hooked to a tree... pull the inner
fender forward.
Repeat as necessary to stretch the wrinkles out... hammer and dolly while
under load to help smooth the damage...
Might unbolt the fender to access the inner structure better... Hit pick
and pull for what is to broken to smooth out, like the hood.

No kidding failed to market... I didn't even know there was a Cruze (or
any other GM) diesel car being produced. Anyone know how they hold up? I
see a new 2019 listed near here and it is 9-speed automatic transmission
which sounds potentially fragile, all by itself.

Detroit Diesel 20V-149. That’s what you need. We used these on very large (2mW)
generator sets. One big, honkin’ engine. Sucked fuel so badly you could watch
the level in the day tank drop when they were running under load.

Here’s a link to a picture of one with six guys in front of it to give you an
idea of scale:

The 1.4 TDI Polo is a three cylinder.
I wonder if it shares any parts with the 1.9 four cylinder.

GM has bungled the Cruze diesel almost as badly as they did diesel cars in the
late '70s. The difference being that this was marketing bungling vs just bad
engines the first time around.
The original Cruze diesel was a top end car, no manual transmission, all the
bells and whistles, that they somehow thought they were going to sell to
cheapskates who wanted 50mpg...

Re: [MBZ] The $500E300 did its job tonight

2019-07-18 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Thanks.

I pulled the pass door open yesterday, it was hanging on the fender just
a bit, wasn't sprung, closed OK.  Got me wondering now if the thing
might actually be fixable.  That might just be the fender mashed back
from the hit.  Engine wouldn't turn over, I'm wondering if when the
airbag deployed it activated some cutout to shut off the engine.  I
haven't fooled around with it to pop the hood yet and assess what
happened inside, but most of the damage seems to be the lower right,
pushed in the bumper bar and the intercooler and I guess tore up the
radiator as I think it lost the coolant.  I might have some time later
to try to get the hood open, will get some pics.

hmperhaps the $500E300 will live another day!

Unfortunately, General Motors, after totally failing to advertise or try to

Just because its sideways mounted in a VW doesn't mean it can't be inline
elsewhere. In fact the '99.5-05 Passats had the engine mounted inline. Pretty
weird that VW made both and weird that they had an inline, front drive...
Lots of people put TDI engines in lots of things...

A lawyer friend defended a similar case, driver crashed car, was on scene and
wondering around for about thirty minutes. Deputy arrived, noted smell of
alcohol, driver failed the field sobriety test and breathalyzer.

At court, deputy testified that he did not see driver operating the car, did
not observe when the drinking occurred. Driver was not advised of Miranda
rights, so any confession was not admissible under the fifth amendment.
Government could not prove when the alcohol was consumed, and adequate time has
passed between crash and arrival of deputy that driver could have become
impaired after the crash. Not guilty.

We have all these "water" oaks on the Island.  I don't know if they are
specific type or what, that's what everyone calls them. They get to be a
certain size and they start to rot or are too weak to hold up.  If it
rains, the canopy gets wet and heavy, and the ground gets soft, and down
they go.  This one actually snapped off right above ground level, rot or
bugs in the trunk or something.  Our roads mostly have canopies of oaks,
many live oaks which are actually amazingly strong, so to minimize the
risk the roads would have to be clear cut, which would cause tremendous
outrage, although the newer residents from Off have no clue and want the
trees cut down.  Nope, not happening.

Haha, yeah "insurance" I do have to call and cancel it though.

Woke up a bit sore this morning but my buddy and I went to collect the
car, load it on the trailer, which was a bit of an effort but that
worked out the kinks.  So the car is back home. Couldn't get the hood
popped, will have to work on that at some point.  Intercooler is all
bent up so that part is dead.  I don't think much else got damaged, the
radiator probably gone.  Most of the damage is low on pass side front,
and the fender pushed back. I don't think it is fixable so will have to
become parts.  Good new tires on it so those can be recycled to
something.  At some point I'll dismantle it and save the good bits and
take the hulk to the knacker, get a few $$ for it.  It ran great so the
engine and tranny are good, I wonder what that would transplant into,
get a diesel again!  Would it be a drop-in on any 210?

I'm actually reminded of last summer talking to a Canadian friend who is a gun
owner. He mentioned something about getting a firearm shipped to his house.
"Wait a tick, you can do that?" Apparently you can.

In retrospect I don't think I asked if it was because of Canada's national gun
registry or whatever.
He did mention that if he took his AR-15 out in public, like had it in his car
not locked up with the ammo in a different box, I don't even remember all the
strict measures, he'd go to jail. Buuut he had another black, plastic gun in
.223 that was basically the same as an AR-15 without actually being an AR-15
that he could get away with all sorts of foolishness with. Apparently Canadian
lawmakers are just as dumb as those in the USA. Which is actually kind of
comforting in a way...

More proof that you live in a police state. Why wouldn't they take evidence at
the accident scene?

That would be a bad idea in Canada now. Thanks to our wonky Liberal
government, the police can now come to your house hours after you have
driven and demand a breathalyser sample. So, if you have a couple of
drinks at home and that puts you over the allowable limit, even if you
were under the limit when you last were behind the wheel, you will be
charged with impaired driving.

What insurance? Would someone carry comprehensive insurance on a $500 car?Heck
that reminds me, I need to take the extra insurance off my pickup. A 9 year old
truck shouldn't be costing me an extra $500 a year.
When I took comprehensive off the Ranger the insurance agent said "What would
you do if you got in a wreck?" I said "I'd buy a new truck, you wouldn't give
me much for this one anyway..."

Subject: [MBZ] The $500E300 did its job tonight

Rode to a community meeting this evening with a buddy. Left his house to come
home about 930. We had big tstorm roll through earlier. Driving down the road a
BIG oak tree falls in the road right in front of me. I guess the storm had
weakened the tree. I hit it full on at 45mph, managed to stomp the brakes but
road was wet so not much good there even though I felt the ABS. Airbag deployed
but I don’t think I hit it, seat belt tensioner must have fired. I’m ok just a
bit rattled. I’ll probably be sore in the morning but right now Mr Basil Hayden
is ministering my aches.

I left the car by the road will go over in the morning with the trailer and
retrieve it. FD came and cut up the tree and got the road cleared. A good ol
boy with a pickup with a winch pulled the car off the road.

I guess the car is probably not worth saving but I’ll take a look in the
morning once I drag it home. Engine was still running but radiator and front
end smashed pretty good. Pass door wouldn’t open. It’s got a salvage title
been wrecked twice before. I’ll dismantle it and keep all the good bits.

I’m thankful I didn’t arrive 1/2second sooner, that might not have ended quite
as well.

And how was YOUR evening?

Distant cousin was killed about five years ago.
Tree fell across a road in the UP in a storm at night, blocking the road.

Two of them stopped, Mark got a chain saw out of his truck and the other guy
helped, then somebody came along and hit Mark, or hit the tree into Mark, I
don't remember exactly.

Whew, probably needed to change your shorts after that.
Theres been a big push across New England (well MA, NH and ME that I know of)
to move trees back from the road. Partially because of things like this but
also to keep them off the power lines. This is a good reminder as to why...

I probably pushed the tree a good 20ft or 30ft or more.  Thumped it
good.  Main hit on pass side front, so that pushed the fender into the
door a bit.  I'm headed over shortly to collect it so will check it out
more.

Should have looked at the picture first, looks like you might have moved the

But like Peter said, if the door openings aren't door shaped any more, it's
dead, even if it wasn't worth 3 digits to begin with.

I assume if you were going to do something like that, the $500 300D or the $200

If a door won't open, it's toast -- too much distortion in the body to ever get
right.

And this indeed is why I drive a Benz -- saved my life when a guy ran a red
light due to inattention and T-boned me doing 60. Mashed the car all to hell,
but I walked away.

Wow, sorry to hear about that, and also glad to hear that no ride to the
hospital required.

Well, those turbo engines have some value if you want to pull and keep
that. Looks like the intercooler probably got crunched though. There are
some other electronic modules that commonly go bad like the K40 relay and
the gear shifter box, and the radio.
