I saw syrup there today but didn't check for a price. Gas is 4.499 regular, 4.999 premium. I bought regular at Marathon for 4.499-.05 instead. BTW, it's Groupon days again. I bought a $60 membership coupon from Groupon for...$60. Took it to the store, where the friendly young lady upsold me to Executive for another $60 (supposed to get a 2% rebate at year end with a $60 floor so I get that extra $60 back). Signed up for the Citi Visa card, another $50 if and only if you're an Executive Club Member. The Groupon gets me a $40 shop card and $40 off on a $250 online order, if I sign up for auto-renew (which I always cancel after I get my $40 shop card). Only works if you haven't been a member in 2022. High gas prices will also drive more buyers to EVs, thinking they won't need to buy fuel anymore. Electric rates will rise, gas will get cheaper. I suspect this summer we'll see a decline in travel and an increase in sedan sales. Ford and GM will, as usual, be left behind in sales due to their gamble that nobody will buy anything other than SUVs anymore. Gas prices will stabilize as demand decreases. I drove my Lexus GX460 this weekend on a 775 miles round trip. One station was $4.89 for premium. For a big 4WD SUV, I got 19.2 mpg which doesn’t seem horrible. But, at these prices (4.75 average), it was almost $200 for gas. Diesel was over $5 per gallon, but a 2014 Mercedes E250 Bluetec (I saw one for sale) would have cost half as much getting 40-42 mpg. This will do wonders for CA gas prices. The United Steelworkers union (USW) at the 245,000 barrel-per-day plant outside of San Francisco said in a notice to members that it has canceled a contract extension, "offered the company a safe and orderly shutdown," and was awaiting a reply from Chevron. I used to have two wood stoves going most of the time. I obtained free firewood - cut to length logs dumped on my driveway by tree cutting crews in the neighborhood. I would listen for the chain saws, track down the work crew, and then offer to save them a trip to a landfill. Worked great plus I got a workout splitting the wood (usually oak). Again, as others have stated, a wood burning device is of little value unless it’s properly located and installed in the home. Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
They're definitely simpler and easier to live with. Make sure you have an alternate source of electricity so if/when the power is out you still have heat. Downside of pellets is they don't store well long term. As far as I know there is no binder in them, they're just held together with pressure. Fortunately when the degrade they just become sawdust, easy cleanup. Curt On Monday, March 7, 2022, 02:37:12 PM EST, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes wrote: I think I wouldn’t mind a pellet stove. A wood burner in a living space is a constant mess to keep cleaned up. Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
Even without a catalyst most (all?) new stoves have secondary burn that will burn off most of the volitiles. My stove is an older Jotul 118, probably from the '80s. It's got a big secondary burn chamber which also recovers heat from that stuff being burnt off. Once it's burning good it rarely produces any smoke. Mostly just around reloads and then only for a minute or two. That of course assumes good, dry wood. -Curt On Monday, March 7, 2022, 01:00:11 PM EST, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: A wood stove fire is sort of nice if you are going to sit around the stove feeling the heat and hearing the fire crackle. We have a wood stove/fireplace insert that puts out a lot of heat once you get it going. I hate dealing with it though so it’s only used in emergencies. Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
We're fortunate to have a small house with the wood stove in the basement. It heats up the floors and thus the upstairs. Our bedroom is the farthest room from the stove and thus the coldest. To heat that room up I vacuum the bedroom. We've got central vac, the canister for which is in the basement by the stove. The vac sucks cold air out of the bedroom and pressurizes the basement which forces warm air up the basement vent. Works a treat... -Curt On Monday, March 7, 2022, 12:28:24 PM EST, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: True, but I feel just as good about turning up the thermostat, more so than lugging wood into the house from outside several times a day, having to light/start a fire every morning, and cleaning out the wood stove and dumping ashes daily. -D > On Mar 7, 2022, at 12:22 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > On Mon, Mar 7, 2022, at 12:18 PM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: > >> With a gas bill of under $100/month in the coldest part of the year >> it’s difficult to justify the time and effort to burn firewood, not to >> mention it’s not exactly the most efficient or cleanest way to heat, >> either. > > It is a lot more work, and does emit some smoke/particulate pollution, > but it is carbon-neutral! Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
We ran the wood stove for a few days to see how it would go, and while it made that part of the house “toasty”, there was no good way to distribute the heat throughout the rest of the house. The wood stove is in the far corner of a former 2 car garage that was converted to living space many years ago. As a result, there’s limited airflow from the HVAC system out there, so there’s no viable way to “push” the heated air into the rest of the house. I tried using a box fan to blow air from the are to the rest of the house, but again, it wasn’t terribly efficient and didn’t really make a significant difference, even with using the HVAC blower to move air around. That and it consumed wood at a crazy rate. I have a couple of those big canvas “carriers” you use to carry wood around, and it would easily go through one to one and a half of those in wood in a day. In the week or two that we ran it, just during the day, I probably went through a 1/4 of a cord or more. You can get free wood for the taking from parts of the National Forests around here, but it goes really fast as one might expect. That and I don’t really have the means to collect and manage a large volume of firewood, unless I get a trailer for the ML. With a gas bill of under $100/month in the coldest part of the year it’s difficult to justify the time and effort to burn firewood, not to mention it’s not exactly the most efficient or cleanest way to heat, either. Thankfully, we’ve got double-pane windows but I don’t think they’re anything fancy with gas between the panes. One advantage of multi-pane windows is cutting down on noise, too. -D > On Mar 7, 2022, at 11:23 AM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes > wrote: > > _All_ we did was double up the attic blown-in insulation. I've been slowly adding insulation to our attic. This week I plan to go get the rest, I've got a bunch of Home Depot gift cards... I've been using unfaced fiberglass laid perpendicular to the existing fiberglass. The rafters are 2x6 so like R19, I'm adding R30. Even having done only half the house I can tell the difference in the heating bill. It's horrible hard work but worth doing... -Curt On Monday, March 7, 2022, 11:24:42 AM EST, Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote: _All_ we did was double up the attic blown-in insulation. One thing folks have not mentioned yet. Last time fuel prices exploded the demand was much higher. With the Covid bs going on, we have now moved to more remote work so a lot of folks don’t have to drive near as much as before. Pretty soon, rather than getting expensed for miles for work, might have to switch to renting cars and expensing that and the fuel. Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
That reminds me that my standby generator guy comes tomorrow morning for my twice a year PM visit. Guess I should check my 500 gallon tank and see what it needs. The propane places around here are so messed up - it’s just the national chains, no locals. Of course they all want to sell you a plan where they come by regularly to top off the tank, but they don’t seem to understand a generator as a consumer of fuel in that it uses very little just exercising weekly. They also try to screw you over if you own your tank - they all wanted to charge me an “inspection fee” before they would fill my tank. Some were as high as $200! I think I ended up with AmeriGas, who quoted me $69. What was funny was the guy came out and filled it, then the guy came later the same day to inspect the tank. Yes, a scam no doubt. Lucky for me I got the tank installer to fill it the first time. He’s about 50 miles away or he would be my regular supplier. -D > On Mar 6, 2022, at 7:07 PM, mitch--- via Mercedes > wrote: > > On 2022-03-06 12:13, Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes wrote: >> So what about home heating oil? Windows and doors were already good, so no need to do anything there. While they weren't efficiency considerations, we added air conditioning to the house with the new furnace and a mini-split to an addition that was poorly insulated and conditioned. Total cost? About $8,000 not including the AC and mini-split. We recovered about $1,000 of those costs in rebates from state, local and Federal rebates and tax credits. It will take some years to recover the costs, but the real gain is in the level of comfort that exists in the house. Parts of it were colder than heck, and I can’t even begin to imagine what it was like with no insulation in the floor (we had the insulation work done in September.) The PO installed a wood stove, but we never use it as it’s not necessary. The gas bill last month for heating, water heating (demand water heater) and cooking was $93.00. Coldest month of the year so far, and we keep it at a comfortable 68F during the day while turning it down to 66F at night. Ambients can often get down into the single digits at night in the winter at this location, so having that tight envelope with a solid amount of insulation makes the place very efficient. Heat rises, so it's not as bad as an uninsulated attic. But having a cold floor (and hence, cold feet) can make the room *feel* colder than it is, and you will lose some heat to the principle that heat conducts from warmer to colder objects. Go down to Home Depot, buy some insulation and get some of the day workers to install it for you. I can’t believe there’s no insulation in a crawl space/floor in a home that requires heat in the winter. That’s crazy. -D > On Mar 6, 2022, at 2:28 PM, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes > wrote: > > Neither one of our houses has insulation under the floors and I can't say I > have heard of it being done around here. Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
And make sure your home is as efficient as possible, too. I’m not discounting the increase in fuel costs by any means, but a lot of times people will only look at the direct expense (of fuel) rather than ways of increasing efficiency. For example, at the Flagstaff house we had an energy audit done right out of the gate that showed some glaring efficiency issues that we expected based on our survey of the house when we bought it. The house is about 2,000 sf, wood frame construction from 1975 on a crawl space. The floor of the house was not insulated, and never had been since it was built. Blow-in insulation in the attic space was a mess from being moved around during several renovations as well as having settled. In fact, it was so bad in some spots it caused ice dams on the roof that resulted in ceiling damage in one part of the house, yet the PO didn’t do anything about it. We took an aggressive approach, which wasn’t cheap, but had insulation installed in the floor/crawl space, the attic insulation straightened out and more blown in, and a blower door test done before and after with any and all gaps or leaks addressed. A new furnace was installed, however, this was a choice on our part due to the age of the existing furnace (28+ years) that was in the mid to upper 90% efficiency range. For those of us who lived through the energy crunch in the 1970s, the one good thing it did was forced people to look more closely at efficiencies in how we use energy as well as alternatives. -D > On Mar 6, 2022, at 1:05 PM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes > wrote: > > Time to look into alternative heat sources. > > > On 3/6/2022 11:13 AM, Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes wrote: >> So what about home heating oil? Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
> If oil hits $8 per gallon by then which is not a stretch then I will be > paying $2000 per month to heat my house. Yep. Let's say a semi gets 6 mpg. That semi travelling from a state that grows food to a state that consumes food goes 1,200 miles. The fuel cost for that trip went from $400 to $1,600 when fuel hits eight bucks a gallon, coming from $2 a gallon. Are we seeing an incoming problem yet? The problem with mathmatics (and hard facts) is that "it is what it is". Math doesn't lie, emotion doesn't change it. Mitch's customers are now coming to that realization now that it's tax time. Was stunned to pay $3.799 on Tuesday, then remembered Let's Go Putin. Today it went up to 4.099, for Regular. 4.79 Diesel. I never paid over $4 for 87 before. Paid as high as 4.299 for Premium 10 years ago, and think I paid $4.55 or more in NY in March of 2012. Yesterday crude was up something like $7 in one day, to $115/42 gallons. Was $67 just before New Year's, when I paid 2.83 for 87 Octane. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
