I haven't heard of (reliably anyway) a non MBZ box on anything
but a 16 valve W201. 2.3-16, Evolution, Evolution II all had Getrag
5sp with 1st gear back and left, 2-5 in an H pattern

2005-11-18 Thread Hendrik Riessen
I am not sure but I think it is overdrive. Why else put a 5 speed in there?
My old 81 200 from south Africa has a 4 speed.
Also looking at the operators manual for my 230E it states that a 5 speed is
optional on the 200, 230E, 230CE, 250, 280E and 280CE. Not that any where
ever officially imported to Australia. Interesting thing is that top speeds
rating in the owners manual states that a 5 speed W123 will go faster in 4th
than 5th for example a 230E fitted with 5 speed will according to the
operators manual do 112 mph in 4th and 105 mph in 5th.

Well at least it is diverting attention away from the real reason

THE drive for green energy in the developed world is having the
perverse effect of encouraging the destruction of tropical rainforests.
From the orang-utan reserves of Borneo to the Brazilian Amazon, virgin
forest is being razed to grow palm oil and soybeans to fuel cars and
power stations in Europe and North America. And surging prices are
likely to accelerate the destruction MORE

Re: [MBZ] 280SE resto cost

2005-11-25 Thread Hendrik Riessen
The biggest costs are usally labour, so if you have access to the equipment
and have the skills to do the work then there is a good chance of making
money. There are other factors such as the purchase price of the vehicle to
be restored and having good contacts to get parts at the right price but
there are very few cars that are worth restoring.
Example: in todays paper there is a 78 450SEL advertised which cost
AU$20,000 to restore and the seller wants AU$7,200 ono

Given the current fuel prices I doubt that he/she will get the asking price.

I can tell you exactly when that happened on my '82 Pontiac Bonneville
wagon. I was driving back to Houston from Fort Worth, stopped at a Texaco
station in Waco and filled up with what turned out to be wet diesel
fuel.

Within 20 miles the engine started missing, and we barely made it back to
Houston. At that time it had 40,000 miles on it. Took it in to the
dealer
and they said, oh, there's a special warranty on the IP and we'll
replace

it at no charge. No wonder they were in such a hurry to get me out of
there. Never was the same after that, and the IP failed again at 70,000,
and I dumped the car to get a '79 240D.

WHY GM?

In a rush to capture part of the growing diesel market after the second
gas shortage (76 i think) GM dieselized its 350 gasser. it was
available in Olds, chevy, and caddy big cars and pickups. They put an
itty bitty fuel filter on it, hidden on the back of the intake manifold,
and piped the OUT side of the filter on the bottom, where any water would
collect. Any water in the fuel went to the injectors and ruined them,
costing big bucks.

The engines were prone to failure, and the dealers didn't want to service
diesels, nor did their mechanics. Most problems were plugged fuel
filters,

or ruined nozzles. The engine was reasonably reliable, if you put a Racor
or Master filter on them that really filtered the fuel and separated the
water. (remember, this was another period when bad fuel was prevalent.)

If pulled hard, the bottom end would go out.

then, in the fall of 1984, GM made a very loud announcement that the
diesel engine had no future in the US, and GM was stopping production of
diesel engines. There was a lot more to the announcement, generally
saying

that if you bought or owned a diesel car that you were feeble minded. Not
content with that mayhem, GM went to the EPA, and collaborated to toughen
the emissions standards so that NO diesel engine in production or planning
could meet the regulation. Until that day, GM had been ardently fighting
the EPA and the greenie weenies on Diesel emission regs.

GM diesel cars sat on lots or were junked. You could buy a nice GM diesel
for $500, 1, 2, or 3 years old. The proclamation was so widely publicized
that it killed the sales of Diesel cars for every manufacturer, even those
committed, like MB and VW.

Mercedes had already prepared the trap oxidizer for the CA market, and
could meet the regs for 85-87. But the damage was done. There is a
reason

why 81-85 123 cars are so plentiful. They were very popular, and of
course, very durable. But, very few diesels sold after the GM
proclamation. There were a few SDLs sold in 86 and 87. There were a
handful of TDs sold in 87, mostly for dealer roadside assistance
vehicles. A few 124 300Ds sold. Ford sold most of its escort diesels to
fleets such as GTE to use up the stock of engines. VW could not sell
enough diesels to bother meeting the regs for a few years.

THAT is why GM. If it weren't for GM, diesel cars would be selling at
about 20% from 1985 until now.

In 75 to 1980, I usually had the only Diesel at our MBCA section
events. Sometimes there was one other car, a 220D or a 240D. Then at one
meeting, I could not believe my eyes, Every car there was a
diesel! 240Ds, 300Ds, CDs Over the winter everyone had traded for a new
Diesel 123! Same people, they now had diesels. I think that was in the
spring of 82.

When I left the house to run an errand this evening in the '90 300D

didn't work - it was blowing a little air, and wouldn't turn off.

When I got to my destination, I turned the car off - the light stopped
blinking - then started it again - the light didn't blink and the ACC
worked normally.

It all works normally for two more stops, then home again.

Those South Africans drive on the left like all sensible people. There are
quite a few SA 123's over here in Oz, I know I owned one for a couple of

the trade embargos.

Re: [MBZ] 190D Day 3

2005-12-08 Thread Hendrik Riessen
I have never had the need to do this but you can try and measure the
temperature of the water in the radiator to confirm that the gauge is not
working. Just because the thermostat is near new does not mean it can not
fail, especially if it is a cheap one.

Hi Marshall,

I talked to the guy I bought it from and he told me he put in a new
thermostat recently. Considering the temp needle barely moves I think it
likely something is wrong with the gauge. I definately had heat more than
the gauge barely registering would give.
When you say The temp gauge WILL read low if there is any resistance in
the lines or
connections that go from the gauge to the sensor you're talking wiring
right? Do you know where the sensor is on the block? Maybe (this would be
so nice) the wire is just disconnected or something.

Re: [MBZ] 84 190E - Concerns?

2005-12-08 Thread Hendrik Riessen

Does it have the K or KE jetronic (CIS/CISE) fuel injection system?
They do rust, mainly in the bottom of the doors. If the bottom of the doors
are rust free the rest should be alright.
Other than that you may have to replace the timing chain and varuious
suspension components, as per other Mercs.

Fuel pump may be tired.

All,

Looking at a 190E for what I feel is a too cheap price of $600. The
seller says the vehicle will start and run but usually needs to be
coaxed into doing so. Said something like the injection pump was bad
and that the repair was more than the car is worth?

I thought it was diesels that had IP's, not gassers? But, never having
owned an MB yet I know next to nothing about them except what I've
read here.

The body appears straight and I can see no immediately apparent rust.
190,000 miles, AT (of course), have not seen interior yet. (Talked to
seller on phone, have seen a few pics)

What should I know about this so I go into this with eyes open? Is the
190E engine problematic? What questions should I ask? Why does he say
IP is bad? Are these like the 116 that traps and hides rust? Where
should I focus looking for rust? You know, etc, etc.

Thanks in advance all

123 cars don't centrally lock/unlock from ANY lock but the driver's side.

It's a distinct possibility that the dealer-cut key was cut incorrectly -
I've had it happen to me. Of course, when it happened to me, I had
another

key to compare it to, showed the parts guy at the dealership, and they
ordered me a new (properly-cut) one.

I'd still replace the thermostat, in spite of your kitchen test. That can
be

the only variable here that I can imagine. Pretty cheap test. If nothing
else, you will have a spare working thermostat in your trunk.

I couldn't believe the difference when I replace mine about a year ago.

However, I don't really like my personal information being splayed out all
over by whoever posted it.
Perhaps instead of just investigating and trying to decipher my intentions
people could contact me and judge for themselves. It's just a little
humble
of a nothing enthusiast club, and not a threat to anyone. It's not some
scam, it a novelty. Auto entusuiast groups meet in America for every kind
of car, why not W123s?

Lastly, I'm not a dealer, the limo is not mine, and I think I made it VERY
clear the car is no gem or bargain. It is a W123 that someone wants to
sell
and I let people who desire as this private owner did to gain free
advertisement on my website. I make no money off car sales- no commission
or anything-

Feel free to post this email on your forum as my rebuttal- I'd join in
myself, but I'd only be hocking wares where it seems it wouldn't be
recieved too well.

(except I got Rusty for the most important order, but that was because
 I
 asked for him).

Gary is good on the phone. He was very professional until he realized
 who I
was. And then he turned into Howard Stern on the wrong meds.

But in the end, in spite of himself, he guided me toward what I needed
 to go
along with the part I was ordering, etc. Yea, maybe he called me a few
 names
and was abusive (in a good natured way) and kept me on the phone for a
 long
time, but that is what builds long-term customers, letting them know
 that
you as a vendor really care about the customer and his/her needs.

Gary is very helpful on the phone. Prior to talking to him, I had no
 idea
that I had to periodically replace the air in my tires.

2005-12-23 Thread Hendrik Riessen

99% of cars are rust buckets, the only difference is the rate of rust.
My 230E is a similar exterior colour but thankfully it is light tan inside.
Anyhow let us know the outcome of the bidding on the SLC, if it is half as
good as the ad states then it should attract a pretty sum. However that
colour combo is not to everyone's taste, perhaps a touch too seventies. Then
again the retro look is in again.

Same symptom. Reverse works fine. Neutral is where it should be. Shift
lever feels the same. It goes into 2nd at 2400rpm and 15mph. I take it
to 3000rpm at 35mph and no shift into 3rd. 3500rpm and still no shift.
No noises, no vibration. Fluid level okay. According to my notes, it's
a 140.134 chassis, 603.971 engine, with a 722.367 transmission.

A stuck kick down button can do that. Then it will shift when the engine
speed approaches the redline. If it's not the kickdown switch or the
cable linkage, then it starts to get expensive.

Helps to keep the grime/dirt/stone-chips off the car. I am not a great fan
of car washing, so anything to keep it cleaner for longer is fine with me.
Obviously putting mud flaps on a exotic Merc is a bit lame but on a daily
driver not a prob.
The ones on the front are off my old 200 and seem to be a little odd because
they are molded to fit into the wheel arch but they look alright and do the
job. Unfortunatley the PO's did not believe in flaps so there are stone
chips on the bottom of the car.

Re: [MBZ] Tire pressure gauge

2005-12-30 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Cheapskates like me use the one down at the servo, plus they give me free
compressed air if I require it.
Now they have the digital one where you pre-select the pressure, whack on
the hose and then wait for the beep beep beep.

Great unless some idiot has run it over.

I kind of like the little digital ones. They're cheaply available at
most big box and auto parts stores. Unlike dial-type gauges, they
usually hold the reading for a few seconds so you don't have to try to
hold the gauge on the valve and read it at the same time. I figure
their accuracy can't be any worse than the pencil type gauges, which are
notoriously bad.

Re: [MBZ] Tire pressure gauge

2005-12-31 Thread Hendrik Riessen
I do shop around and not just go to the same one. Also I can tell within a
couple of pounds how much pressure is in the tyre by looking at the bulge at
the bottom.
There is no point in having a gauge if there is no compressed air to fix the
problem.
Years ago when I was working in the bush at harvest time checking the truck
and trailer tyre pressure was a real pain because the dust in the rims would
blow in my face while checking the pressures. That and being sweaty, I would
end up looking pretty grubby after 18 tyres at 90-100psi. However better
that than losing a tyre and having the boss check all the wheels himself to
find low pressures.

I checked the mechanical gauge on the compressor at the 7-11 against my

run over a few times.

Re: [MBZ] WTF?

2005-12-31 Thread Hendrik Riessen
I have had a couple like that just recently, at the mo I've bought a couple
of clear indicator assemblies and the seller has left feedback already, even
though the indicators (according to Fedex) have not even left the states.
A decent seller should leave feedback once he/she has what they are after
(money). Otherwise they are withholding feedback to try and intimidate the
buyer into leaving good feedback. Unfortunately however that is the way the
feedback system is going.
Anyway ebay is full of con artists at best and downright crooks at worst and
every vehicle in which the A/C is not working just needs a recharge:-)

I've literally never seen a transaction go that way. Generally the
buyer leaves feedback once they're satisfied (or not) with the
merchandise, then the seller leaves feedback. You really don't know
whether someone's a good buyer or not until they've gotten the stuff.
Just because they paid doesn't mean they won't try to weasel out of it
later.

Re: [MBZ] the warp drive mystery

2006-01-01 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Well...it may be the filter. If it is old, change it. However
there are other possibilities such as blocked screen in the fuel tank (not
likely due to the suddenness of the problem). Weak fuel pump (not likely due
to the suddenness of the problem). From there things get more tricky (more
likely).

Is it the CIS or CIS/E (K or KE) jetronic injection system?
What troubles me is the suddenness of the problem (am I repeating myself?),
if it was filter related I would expect a gradual loss of performance unless
some really filthy fuel went into the system. The oilers will agree that
blocked filters come on slowly and not just one day I was zipping along and
the next day it was no go.
Agreed that if the engine revs with external fuel delivery then ignition and
air supply problems can be ruled out, so back to the fuel system.
Have you checked the throttle linkages to ensure they can move their full
amount of travel (the throttle flap should move about 80 degrees)?
Have you checked the sensor plate for ease of movement? When pushed down
there should be slight resistance all the way down and then should snap
shut. You can also push down the sensor plate with the motor idling, it
should stall.
The only real way of diagnosing the system is with fuel pressure gauges,
which I don't have.
Anyway you can try changing fuel filters but I have a feeling there might be
bigger probs.

This is a nice overview of the system

Well I went over to my dads where I stashed the car and loaded it up on
the trailer. Decided to use the 6.2 suburban instead of the usual 1 ton
6.5 turbodiesel to haul it back home. Boy is there a difference in
towing. With the 6.5 turbo, I dont even know there is a fully loaded
trailer hooked on the back. With the 6.2, I know its there. Still tows
fine though. Anyways, back to the 380. Barely had enough power to load
on the trailer. Once home, I took the air cleaner off and fired her up.
Of course wouldnt rev up past about 2k in neutral. Brought out the
gas can and just putting the nozzle over the throttle body cause it to
be able to rev up. just from the fumes. Poured a couple of drops down
it and she revved all the way up. The conclusion is the filter has to
be plugged up. I guess running it so lean trying to keep up speed was
enough to superheat the exhaust. Doesnt appear anything is wrong with
the exhaust that I can tell.

2006-01-01 Thread Hendrik Riessen

Check for rust.
If it has a aftermarket turbo fitted, I would pass. MB never turboed those
engines, hmmmnh wonder why?

Did I mention to check for rust?
If it is in good condition without a turbo then it is worth the money as
these cars have pretty much reached value bottom and are only going to go
up. The 4.5 is also desirable because it puts out a fair bit of grunt
without the bigger maintenance costs of the 6.3. Do you know anything about
the D-jetronic fuel injection system? I take it from what the seller wrote
that it is not running or running very badly.

Make sure you get under the car and check for rust.

Actually one day about 2 years into owning my 240D I noticed a SEVERE
reduction in power that changing the filters fixed right away.
I'd let the tank get much lower than ever before a day or two before and
I guess it just took a day to really pack all the crud into the filter. A

Well, if this thing has a factory turbo motor I would suggest you get
yourself down there with the dosh and don't haggle.

Factory M117 turboed motor. Wonder how much that is worth?
If it is factory, don't run the motor just get it trailered back to your

Mercedes did turbocharge the 117 4.5 litre engine - in the C111, and
set several world records with it. They did this after setting all
those DIesel records with the turbo'd 617, and after porche stole a
record from them. Got it back with the C111/117.

May be, but NOT in a W108 chassis! There's barely room for the
exhaust, let alone turbo piping, and it goes fast enough as it is -- I
have one.

The 617 swap was fairly common in Germany -- reduced the taxed
considerably and didn't take too much off performance.

Bob,

It looks pretty nice and I like that cream yellow color.

They claim the 72-73s were the last hand built Mercedes. Very stout and
safe as a vault. The gearing was pretty low (3.69:1) and the engine runs
pretty
fast so performance is good but mileage is affected and it would be tough
to
get better than 15 town, 20 highway. Make sure it has fuel injection.
The

low horsepower 280s had dual carbs that were not as desirable.

I sure don't know if the turbocharger could be for real, but stranger
things have happpened.

I had a 65 Euro 300SE with a four speed stick that ran (and looked) like a
gangster car. Lot of fun to wing that big six up to 6 grand in the
gears!

Do you know anything
about

the D-jetronic fuel injection system? I take it from what the seller wrote
that it is not running or running very badly.
Make sure you get under the car and check for rust.

Re: [MBZ] Used Engines from Tri-Star

I think the only way is to get them to send you compression figures.
Once the engine is running your end do another test to verify figures.
Also make sure they give you the engine number of this low mileage engine,
that way they at least know that you are not a no-nothing. You have to get
the idea across to them that you know your stuff, that way they will rip-off
some other person.

2006-01-04 Thread Hendrik Riessen
The basics should be the same, in 85/86 they went to the KE/CISE injection
system.
The 123's as far as I know always used the K/CIS injection system. Cold
start valves and other parts of the K-jetronic system can give trouble but
are generally easy to fix/replace. Fuel pumps is one of the things that
gives out regularly on these types of fuel injection systems.
It is recommended to strictly follow the oil change routines in the M102
motor with single timing chain.

Other than that it is the usual 123 problems to look for.
However a word of caution, if this vehicle has not been properly maintained
and has no service history you may get more trouble than you budgeted on.
There is a difference between used and abused and used and maintained.

You might also ask Tri-Star for the engine # and if possible, the VIN of
the car it was removed from. With the VIN a Carfax *might* tell you
something about the condition of the engine, or it might not. If you get
the engine # *and* the VIN you should be able to determine if that engine
actually came out of that VIN. It might not be possible to tell if that
*exact* engine came from the VIN they provided but MBNA *might* have some
info to help correlate the 2 numbers together. But gathering more info
is

never a bad thing. There's also a possibility Tri-Star will tell you that
info is not available. If nothing else, Tri-Star will see you're not

Re: [MBZ] Used Engines from Tri-Star VIN no.

2006-01-05 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Looks to be a import as well. You might want to get back to tri star and ask
them about the mileage. Does carfax make mistakes like missing out a zero on
the end. I would not believe that the 240D has only done 10Kmiles, even 105k
miles is a bit low for an 82.

On the other hand it checks out as being wrecked in the middle of 05.

Thanks for running, guys. So the issue to be concerned about is the
mileage

reports I suppose. This report says some 10,5xxx miles. Tri Star says
105,xxx miles. Sounds like Tri Star doesn't know the mileage on that car
at

all, and is just claiming it to be 105k.

Nice car, but he appears to be casting aspersions on the the
individual who originally imported the vehicle:

This model mercedes was never available in the United States; it was
imported by a private part in 1985.

BTW: Does anyone have a 123 guage with the economy meter built into
it, like this gasser's setup. I'm just looking for the fuel level/oil
pressure/coolant temp/fuel economy guage set.

They sell for 6 euros, and since the buck is weak to it, $22 is pretty

Re: [MBZ] 5.0 euro, replaced the fuel filter, warp drive back up sort of

2006-01-09 Thread Hendrik Riessen
I'd say at WOT your fuel air mixture is too rich, whereas when you back off
the throttle the mixture improves (less fuel).
Have you pulled the spark plugs, they sometimes tell the story. Are you able
to adjust the mixture on your fuel distributor?
The later KE ones have a plug to stop tampering (govt regs), whereas the K
jet ones have a adjustment screw which takes a Allen key. Make sure that the
Allen key is a good fit. Adjusting the mixture without a CO meter is an art
form and not something that should be done without some knowledge of the
procedure (read that as a disclaimer).
To do this properly you should check your fuel pressures before turning the
mixture screw. No good trying to compensate for a system running the wrong
pressures.
I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO LEARN MORE ABOUT K-JETRONIC SYSTEMS BEFORE
ATTEMPTING TO ADJUST ANYTHING, YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO
BEFORE YOU DO IT. Especially if you are doing this without the proper
diagnostic equipment.

Well I replaced the fuel filter on the 85 380 with the 5.0 euro, didnt
seem to make a different. I unhooked the exhaust at the manifold and it
didnt seem to make a different. Hooked the exhaust back up and now it
seems fine. Took it for a spin, doenst seem to have quite as much power
as before, almost like a US 5.0. Anyways, what I did notice is that
full pedal down, economy guage all the way in the red, x amount of
power. IF you let up off the pedal slightly, economy guage moves
slighly off full red and you have more power. Can tell a definate
difference. What does this indicate?

[MBZ] Fuel pressure test kits for K-jetronic(CIS)

Yeah well I am in the market for a test kit.
The cheapest I have found in Oz is about AU$600
http://www.autotools.com.au/catalogue/product.php/10/19/224
On ebay there are several overseas but none in Oz, the cheapest is this one
in Ohio ebay number: 4602349480
however if you want to test a broader range then this one is better ebay
num: 4601165793

Of course if a mate lends you his/hers then it will work out even cheaper.
Oh yeah just in case someone is wondering what a bar is, a bar is 100kpa.
One bar is about 14.5psi.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel pressure test kits for K-jetronic(CIS)

2006-01-09 Thread Hendrik Riessen
I'll keep that in mind, however I usally buy tools with a long term view in
mind. That is to say one day I may own a car that has a system other than
K/KE in which case a universal kit comes in handy. Also being able to fix
tricky hard to track down problems will save lots of dollars. Not to mention
when the old school mechanics retire there will be no-one to fix these old
cars.
I don't think too many of todays DC apprentices would know anything about
K-jetronic, except that it a system used on antique Benz vehicles.
Also while I am bashing away at the keyboard, just a word of safety about
working on fuel injection systems.
All fuel injection systems work under a fair bit of pressure (ie. K-jet
works at somewhere between 50-75psi) and the fuel pump is designed to have a
flow rate of about 15 litres/minute, so if there is a problem you may have a
flame thrower on your hands.
To avoid a potentially nasty situation it is recommended to disconnect the
battery (although few do) and ground the chassis to get rid of static
electricity.
OK most won't do that because it is a pain to do, however I do insist that
when working on a fuel system that safety glasses are worn. Spilt fuel is
cleaned up straight away. A working and suitable fire extinguisher is at
hand (not over the other side of the shed behind a whole pile of old bits
and pieces because in these situations seconds count), also make sure you
know how to use the extinguisher (you don't want to read the instructions as
your pride and joy is barbecuing). I have a extinguisher attached to the
passenger seat and an extinguisher just inside the door to the shed (also
inform your partner of the location of extinguisher and instruct in use of
said item without alarming partner). As a backup have the garden hose nearby
just in case.
Lastly if you do get covered in fuel, change clothes immediatley. I usally
just wear a T shirt (and pants) and if some fuel spills it is easy to change
or just wipe the arms.
I realise most/all of you know this stuff but I doesn't hurt to be reminded
as much as first degree burns hurt (which I don't know because I have never
been a human torch).
Also if anyone has additional safety tips relating to fuel systems, please
speak up.

That's a big universal kit. For K-jet, you just need something
you can put in the control circuit with a gauge and a shutoff
valve. With the valve open, you read control pressure. With
the valve shut, control pressure rises to match system pressure
and you see what the regulator is set for.

Thanks for that, does it work on D-jet or more modern type injection system?
It should work on D-jet I suppose because all you can really measure is fuel
pump pressure, the rest is all electrical. Same with the modern injection

Subject: [MBZ] New MB Driven Ssang Yong in AU

From: http://carsguide.news.com.au/story/0,20384,17767442-21822,00.html

Ssanyong is maintaining its expansion strategy on the Australian
market and has announced it will import the Kyron range of
four-wheel-drives to Australia next year.

Kyron looks to be a medium-size wagon and is likely to be promoted for
its safety, yet at typically low SsanYong prices. Engines familiar to
SsanYong models already sold here, such as the Rexton, will be in the
Kyron range. They are the 2.7-litre turbo-diesel five-cylinder and the
double overhead camshaft 3.2-litre V6 petrol jobs made under licence
from Mercedes-Benz.

However, SsanYong says it is particularly proud of a new common-rail
two-litre diesel engine that it has developed in house. All three
engines will be offered on Kyron in Australia. The importers promise
the Kyron will be a genuine sporty 4WD.

It will have multi-link suspension, optional 18in-diameter wheels, an
advanced electronic stability program linked to an active rollover
protection program, as well as hill-descent control.

Also optional is driver seat memory, which is able to store the seat
and mirror settings for three separate people.

A five-speed manual or the T-tronic (that is, Mercedes-Benz type)
five-speed automatic will be the transmission choices. Dual front and
side curtain airbags are part of the standard safety gear, as are
ventilated disc brakes with ABS and a brake-assist system.

SsanYong Kyron is due to go on sale in Australia in the second quarter
of 2006 following its overseas launch in the first few months of the

Just pulled in from the Windy City, where I picked up my winning e-bay

to be exact. Figured it would make a good shakedown cruise. Car performed
flawlessly! 29 mpg over speeds ranging from 45to 80 mph. Cruise worked
All in all, I feel I got a real decent car, not a museum piece.

I love how it says *w123* one of Mercedes most popular models shows off
its (for its time) technological superiority.
For it's time...Heck, I saw a one year old Ford Expedition in the
boneyard last week that didn't fare anywhere near as well as that 123 (
not a severe wreck either, a simple 1x low speed rollover, the thing
looked like lasagna, all doors sprung ( from the wreck, not rescue )roof
line colapsed in a twist into passenger compartment, every passenger
position was either a serious injury or death...gave me the creeps ).
I'll jump in a 123 any day of the week. I would not feel safe at all in
one of those Expeditions.
Instead of saying for it's time it should say: ahead of it's time

Lots of nagging, snide remarks and those looks:-)

What women really want is power, lots of big V8 power. They won't admit it
but that is what they like.
The missus came home the other day after being in a mates new (to him) V6
mitsi and she commented that the car had power.
Of course if they have to juice the car they will get the little buzz box
but women love the feel of power.

2006-01-14 Thread Hendrik Riessen

It's also 27.9mb big.
I am a bit disappointed in the fuel consumption figures, especially given
that my 230E is round about 12.5l/100k's and has a lot more power. Then
given the fact that diesel is usally about 10cents dearer than petrol the
300D and 230E cost about the same to run.

I seem to remember the 450's only came with autos due to the high torque.

Probably a euro 350SE or maybe a 450SE, both V8s. I had a 65 euro 300SE

Re: [MBZ] Lifting the rear end of a W123

2006-01-15 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Not a problem, just make sure that it is centred on the very bottom of the
diff.
Also make sure your front wheels are blocked and of course do not get under
a car that is only supported on a hydraulic jack. Plenty of people do but it
is a gamble.

Re: [MBZ] Rare 300D (W123) test film from 1976 German TV

2006-01-15 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Perhaps one of our better deutsch speakers could produce a transcript of the
more important parts, like the cross wind test. The test involves the 123
driving at 100kmh through a 100kmh cross wind and the deviation is then
measured.
Mostly the bloke goes on about how good it is and that there is no real
competitors from other manufacturers.

Re: [MBZ] old mystery car

2006-01-15 Thread Hendrik Riessen
I have seen a 450SLC converted to manual to rally. It is owned by Joe
Alexander and he was not happy because they bumped him into modified class
because the 450's never came with manual, I seem to remember him saying that
he pulled the gearbox out of a 350SLC.
Plus there are lots of instances of Mercedes rallying SLC's and I don't
think they where all auto or six cylinders.

I think the service managers are pushing the mechanics so hard to do 3x
the

normal work in the same time- the result is, of course, human error. It
could have been a costly accident.
