RE: Amiga monitor on MSX

1999-12-20 Thread MkII

Look at following diagram: (I have a SCART connector on it, but you should
be able to connect it to a Turbo R)
So all the fuzz about seperate syncs is out of the way now: the monitor
 has
 a seperate composite Synchrinisation input!

A-ha. Now it's clear: according to your wiring diagram, the newer 1084
models with DB-9 connector seem to HAVE a composite sync input on pin 7.
Building a custom SCART or DIN-8 cable to hook an MSX to them would be
straightforward.

But the problem is with older models which have a DIN-6 connector for
analog RGB with no comp. sync but separate h/v syncs. They have a separate
DIN-8 connector for digital RGB which HAS a comp. sync input BUT the analog/
TTL switch prevents that signal from feeding the sync circuitry when
working in analog mode 8:(

The best solution would be soldering a female SCART socket onto the empty
space reserved for that purpose, but a bridge on the place and my
suspicions that some components apart from the socket are missing
discouraged my purpose.

By the way, are these monitors better than Philips CM-8833?

The older model is EXACTLY the same monitor but in white color. The newer
model is more robust, with smoother design, has a monochrome green switch,
includes the dreaded COMPOSITE SYNC pin 8:) and was electronically revised
and enhanced to support the heavier duty they got from Amiga users 8:D

Kiss you all.

Re: DiskROM *MOTOR OFF*

1999-09-29 Thread MkII

Well, I can tell you that it's pretty irritating if the harddisk spins down!
Several demo's do that also, e.g. the demo Scrollmania (I thought it was) in
IOD's Metal Limit. Other software does so too... BUt ok, in your game it
isn't
that much of a problem, since indeed, it doesn't have to load afterwards
(does
it? Don't you need to load the next stage pictures?) AND you cannot quit the
game other than reset the MSX.

Gee... the game loads the girly backdrop *every* stage. I guess you haven't
completed the 1st round yet! 8:D

You still can quit the game in this release. Press CLR/HOME.

The problem if my harddisk stops, is that I can't turn it on again! Only by
turning off the power of the powersupply, wait 3 seconds, and turn it on
again...

?!?!?!

Is that a standard behaviour of harddisks on the MSX?!?

If so, I think the best solution would be:

To play the game from diskette, boot the computer (the final release will
have a custom bootsector and *no* MSX-DOS system files). The game system
will stop the motor via the *INTERFACE SPECIFIC STOP ROUTINE* (please
confirm address and parameters if any).

If ran from other media booted with an already installed MSX-DOS, the game
system won't stop anything.

Nice or what?

   LD IX,04029H
   LD IY,(0F347H)
   CALL 0001CH

This calls the STOPDRV routine from diskrom (entry point 4029h). But I
don't know what will happen if you have 2 disk-interfaces connected to one
MSX. Does somebody know?

OK, thanks. Now I'm calling the STOPDRV routine for each valid DiskROM
found in the table at #FB21. It works very smooth. Perhaps it will spin
down hard disks and similar devices but that's OK since the game gathers
all system resources and no scatter disk access is done during gameplay.

Thanks. I implemented acceleration to the scroll. It has a barebones 2
channel repetitive PSG "soundtrack" but I was given the choice of
hardcomposing a tune in assembler or keep sleeping on the mats, so... 8:)

The backdrop was also rush coded in PostScript.

Btw I forgot to switch on the motor off logic in the Playmate kernel (used

Re: Snes vs Megadrive rectification

1999-09-04 Thread MkII

Yeah. So what was the point of that "CPU immense power" then???

Well, Some MegaDrive (Genesis) games try to do with 68000 the same
as SNES does with its VDP: rotation, scalling, etc, etc, etc. A fast main
processor can be used to do some calculation... I think that is the
point... Not only Video calculation, but any calculation that is needed...

You have to agree that the "main loop" of a game isn't a very
time-consuming process, when you do not consider video drawing,
music play, etc, etc, etc...

And fast processor means nothing if not used wisely.

Yeah, but a 7MHz 68000 is *NOT* a fast processor, whatever use you make of it!

Even with 2 68000
processors, Z80, VDP, CDROM, etc, etc, etc, SegaCD lost the
war agains SNES... Just because SNES has a better VDP and effects
processor built-in...

That's it. It lost the war because even 2 68000s cannot emulate in software
what a VDP does in hardware, at a reasonable speed.

I'd like to point out an Atari ST had serious problems to move a single 16
color layer. And I don't mean SMOOTH moving!

A dedicated device yields much higher throughtput than a general purpose CPU.

Re: Snes vs Megadrive rectification

Please get your facts straight Laurens. The MegaDrive/Genesis had a 68000
processor running at 7 mhz. Twice the speed of the SNES. I admit that the
Snes has cool graphical features like you mentioned, but take one look at
the sonic games released for the Genesis, it has so many layers most
computers can't emulate it, because of the immense speed!

A 7MHz 68000 can barely handle a single layer without additional hardware.

No way.

And how to do 6502 emulation? Classical emulation or a simulation
  (like Executor)?

6510 emulation is feasible. But the 1MHz CPU is a mere register setup
device for the custom chips, like on the Amiga.

  Ok, I don't know C64 but comparing C64 with Turbo-R:
Well, C64 has poor sound and no much fine performance. My ST plays
"Amiga MOD files", displays more than 256 colors and plays "digital

Which are the special things of SID? Great effects?

SID has really powerful programmable filters, complex interchannel
modulations (including ring) and different oscillator waveforms (including
variable width pulses) which yield a rich, dynamic sound.

Its design is sheer brilliant. Hence the Byte award.

Bear in mind it was designed in the VERY EARLY 80s, so comparing it against
a TR or whatever 90s computer has little sense.

C64 is the computer with the best built-in sound capabilities of ITS AGE.

About C64, I were 6 years old the last time I played with one, and then,
it seemed wonderful to me. Recently I downloaded the C64 emu for PC, and
also one game, "HERO" (which was the first game I ever played on a

perhaps the HERO conversion to C64 wasn't good, I don't know...

Hero for C64 sucks big time.

Re: Assembler evolution (was Re: Compass 2.0)

1999-08-04 Thread MkII

Well I like it! Although adding the extra 0 to an address can be a pain
sometimes indeed... But an intelligent assembler should be able to see the
difference between an address and a label, too bad they usually don't.

How could an assembler state whether BADH is a hex number or a label in a
single pass?

H's are indeed a standard Intel convention *BUT REMEMBER* Zilog enhanced
the 8080 architecture with their Z80, including the assembler!!! So don't
make a step backwards, please.

Then why does Zilog use H-suffixes in all their official documentation?
(Z80, Z380, etc.)

Because they use a bad 8080-friendly assembler 8;)

Trivia: Most of the Motorola 680x0 series official documentation listings
are written in UPPER CASE when it's officially discouraged!

Trivia 2: Most of the Amiga system software is *NOT COMPLIANT* to the
official Style Guide!!

The # prefix was introduced as a more convenient *alternate* way of
specifying a hex number. It's not officially endorsed as the only supported
method!

People involved in writing the official docs felt more confortable with the
H suffixes, just like the M680x0 official coders felt confortable writing
with the caps locked.

Assembler evolution (was Re: Compass 2.0)

1999-08-01 Thread MkII

Jon de Schrijder wrote:
Question: would you guys mind if I would drop the support for other

YES! ^^;
I always use h and b suffixes.

Prefixes are the best way of indicating a base. It's easier to read, to
process more pleasant to the eye, more recognizable and less ambiguous. I
personally hate the trick of adding a 0 to an address starting with a
letter (0h... argh!!).

$ prefix for hex is used by Motorola/MOStech I think...

Yes.

I have no idea where some people get the # prefix from ^^;

I've been using the # prefix since 1982. I've *always* seen it on serious
Z80 assembler (including coin-op firmware sources). I came thru the ugly H
suffixes later in the "PC rebirth" era (!) and now in MSX (!!).

Which is a standard Zilog/Intel convention
AFAIK.

No.

H's are indeed a standard Intel convention *BUT REMEMBER* Zilog enhanced
the 8080 architecture with their Z80, including the assembler!!! So don't
make a step backwards, please.

People got bad Z80 assembler habits because of the 8080/Z80 assembler
combos (like the M80). Many people keep using DB and DS when the standard
Zilog equivalents are DEFB, DEFM, DEFS and DEFL.

Most assemblers recognize 8080 directives for former 8080 coders
convenience, not Z80's!

Re: Compass improvement??? Jon! Listen!

1999-07-24 Thread MkII

Yeah! Let's for example tokenize CALL as #CD, RET as #C9 etc...

Well yes, that was the idea. Would assemble really fast, wouldn't it?
And if use #FF as opcode for other things like labels or comments... (#FF
#FF = RST #38).
#21 #00 #00 would then be LD HL,# in the code and
#21 #FF "LABEL1" would be LD HL,LABEL1.

Gee... again, this already exists and it's called OBJECT CODE! 8:D

But the great thing is... that it's indeed a great idea and it would work!

ZX Spectrum used straight tokenized BASIC, and most BASICs (if not all)
tokenize internally. I'm also coding a PostScript tokenizer for small

Re: Text editor w/ varitabs

1999-07-22 Thread MkII

I'm not sure what I'm looking at is the same you typed. You used TABs in
this e-mail and my reader may have a different tab width than yours.

This is what I see (I replaced tabs by spaces):

It's not the same, so I'll drop tabs further on for assembler.

The format I use:

FOOBAR
  LD A,B
  DJNZ FOORBAR

Never label and code on a single line. It's practical when inserting a
line, removing a line or cutting/pasting lines.

Nice to see everyone has its own definite style. Personally I'm pretty
demanding and always work with an editor capable of dealing with labels +
code on a single line in a comfortable way (like the fab DevPac editors for
ST Amiga).

For me the air in the sources is the most important issue when it comes to
readibility, and I find separate labels a bit confusing.

As the most edited labelled lines are the first of the subroutines, I
usually use separate labels just this way:

FOOBAR ; USELESS ENDLESS LOOP
; E: FOO FOO FOO FOO
; M: BAR BAR BAR BAR

LD A,(FOO_VAR)
USELESS NOP
DEC A
JR NZ,USELESS
RET

I'm practical, but visually appealing 8:)

By the way, MS Word can do variable tabs, but I don't think it qualifies as
a good text editor... ;)

Definitely not 8:)

Re: Joystick status

1999-07-22 Thread MkII

I still don't understand the AND/OR values for reading joystick status from
the Portar documentation ?!?!???!?!??? ? ?!?!?!? ?!??!?!?:

This rotine will read joystick 1 or 2:
F3di
3E 0F ld a,0fh Write this for Write this for
D3 A0 out (0a0h),a Joystick port 1:Joystick port 2:
DB A2 in a,(0a2h)
E6 DF / E6 AF and 1101b; 0DFh and 1010b; 0AFh
F6 4C / F6 03 or 01001100b; 04Ch or 0011b; 003h
D3 A1 out (0a1h),a
3E 0E ld a,0eh
D3 A0 out (0a0h),a
DB A2 in a,(0a2h)

I lost the reply someone (Laurens?) did to my message. It was stated the
utility of AND/OR againt multiple BIT/SET instead of the actual meaning of
the bit salad regarding joystick reading.

I of course know the AND/OR vs BIT/SET! I was poking Z80 opcodes right in
1984 when the rest of the classroom was learning "present continuous"! 8:D

I wanted to know the reason of these values. According to the Portar doc it
should be enough to toggle the joystick select line. The lower bits seem to
be for touchpad handshaking and all 4 should be "1". The AND instruction
also wipes another bit apart from joystick select.

I've been using this routine blindly for some time and it works, but I'd
like to know exactly the electrical reasons behind the process.

Kiss you.

Re: Those Microsoft coders...

 But this string:

 C085 426F6F74206572 DEFM "Boot error"
 726F720D0A DEFB #0D,#0A
C091 50726573732061 DEFM "Press any key for retry"
 6E79206B657920 DEFB #0D,#0A
 666F7230726574
 72790D0A

Ah, no. You have to include the byte after #0A too!!! I bet it is a 0.

Of course. I wanted to show that the string contained no "$" signs, so it
was possible to just call function #09.

No, it saves some time... :) It saves a CALL and a RET-instruction.

Mmm... if it wasn't for the unjustified JP (and your smiley!) I could
believe that but... no 8:D 8:D 8:D 8:D

 And
besides, they use 0 as terminate-character, and not "$"... (I don't
understand why, for god's sake why does the stringroutine use "$" as
terminating character??? CP/M-compatibility, okay. But then why did the
developers of CP/M choose "$" instead of a 0

Definitely CP/M legacy.

Another source of *BAD HABITS* *:D

Haven't checked that but I'm quite sure, I know quite a bit how Dos is
programmed and I really expect those kind of tricks of them.

Tricks? To repeat a ROM function? To use JPs in loopless near jumps??? 8:?

Well okay that's not a trick, I meant it as an expression. But if you want
to see a Microsoft-trick, try to disassemble (and understand!) the first
part of the MSXDOS2.SYS-file.

Mmm... you all guys seem very fond of the MSX firmware system software.

Well, it should be, since this is the first computer I still had not the
need to disassemble / reverse-engineer its ROM!!! 8:)

But if you really want to know why they used JP: let's just say that JP is
generally faster than JR, and you will never get 'out of range'-problems, so
most programmers use JP all the time. I do too. I hardly use
JR-instructions. Only sometimes, when it's faster than JPs (for example in
conditional jumps which are 'false' more than 60% of the times they are
executed).

The best solution is an assembler with optimization capabilities. Again,
like DevPac for ST Amiga. In restricted memory and speed environments
like all the 8-bit computers any byte and T-state saved has its weight (at
least in your programmer's pride!) 8;)

Re: Meaning of VRAM size speed bits

1999-07-22 Thread MkII

 1SP? Sprite (0=On, 1=Off)

The name is SPD, not SP. With it you can disable the sprites, which
drastically spees up the VDP (that's why the name is SPeeD).

Mmm... I'm thinking in disabling sprites + display in the invisible parts
of the screen in my overscan routine to gain some speed (dunno if that
would actually mess/disturb/desync display).

Anyway with the game code 90% complete the main CPU VDP loop only takes
1/4 of the frame time!!! -_-v

 2VR0 VRAM size and speed

It's the VRAM mode.

According to my docs it has to be 0 (it has no value), but when looking to
the meaning of the 3rd bit I think you can switch between 1 and 4-bit VRAM
with this. On MSX always keep it 0!!!

OK. I prefer to poke values directly to VDP registers instead of reading
the shadow, mask and modify the bits I want provided I know exactly what
I'm doing!

 3VR1 VRAM size and speed

Again, it's the VRAM mode.

My docs tell me:

1 = 64k x 1bit / 64k x 4bit
0 = 16k x 1bit / 16k x 4bit

I don't know what the value on MSX is, I guess it has to be 1 all the time.
You can check the value by doing PRINT RIGHT$("000"+BIN$(VDP(8)),8) in
Basic.

1 indeed.

 4CBcolour Bus direction (0=Output, 1=Input)

This one can also have 1 value, otherwise the VDP won't work (it might even
blow up!).

OOPS! Same seems to go for PSG register 7. 10xx or BANG!

The first time I laid my hands on an MSX I POKED the PSG register 7
directly... with 00xx!!! My 8250 sounds real bad when doing phaser
effects, so I presume perhaps I blowed something with that POKE?!?!?

 5TP?Transparent from palette

If this bit is set color 0 isn't transparent anymore. As far as I know this
only affects the sprites. You know the use of it, don't you?

Yeah. I actually ABUSE this bit.

PSG function trigger

1999-07-20 Thread MkII

What PSG registers actually trigger the oscillator/envelope generator when
written to?

For example, writing the fine tone does not retrigger the oscillator
(yielding smooth pitch transitions) but writing the coarse tone seems to
restart the wave, with the annoying "pop" (and IMO it's not a matter of too
diferent pitch since I've tested an equivalent transition on an Amiga with
smooth results).

Same goes for envelopes. Which register(s) actually cause the EG to restart?

Has anybody btw used the EG to create triangle and sawtooth tone waveforms
like it was used on some great games demos on the Atari ST?

Nope. Mainly for historical reasons.

I've been usign the DevPac developer environment in all 8 and 16-bit
computers I own since 1985 and it has always proved to be the best
(integrated "100% written in optimized assembler" editor, variable tabs,
colonless labels, tons of output formats and options (including S-records),
built-in disassembler, debug info, FAAASSSTT!).

The great thing is that visuals functionality of DevPac is THE SAME on
all computers (ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, Amiga...).

I even use the editor to edit TEXT FILES! It searches and replaces 100
times faster that any other!

I came across GEN80 and MON80 at Funet, but haven't found the whole DevPac
package (which should include editor and BIOS/BASIC/BDOS include definition
files).

I'm desperately seeking the full GEN80 package from HiSoft (assembler,

Officially this pack is called DevPack I believe... Something with Dev in
it, at least not Gen80.
But anyways, it can be found on funet: ftp.funet.fi (FTP)

I only found GEN80 and MON80, not the entire package. I'll further check.

Btw, what assembler environment was used in the MSX world back in 1984?

M80 L80?

Re: VDP port addresses in ROM

1999-07-20 Thread MkII

Do you guys get the VDP port addresses from main ROM (at #0006) or you
  actually bang #9x ports directly?

 We all use #9x immediately.
Unless we write a tutorial were we say that the standard asks us to use
 #0006 ;-)

He is right. There is some MSX1 to MSX2 transformer which has different
ports but we need the speed too much to read it from adress 6. And in
Dos-environment we have to do some difficult interslot-read... nah, assuming
#98-#9B is much faster, easier, clearer.

Using address 6 forces you to always use the OUT (C),r form, but I've
managed to cope with this in a clean way but... the setup interslot-read
and unorthogonal incrementing-storing really makes me SICK. It's the worst
part of the code and it's right in the beginning! 8:D

And by the way, from MSX2+ on, those ports #98-#9B are standarized too.
So if you directly use these ports, it will work, according to the standard,
on every MSX 2+ and higher. And in practice, it will also work on every MSX,
exept for those which are adapted to MSX2 with this very rare Japanese
board.

And as I have no access to these rarities... perhaps some other
incompatibility would arise despite the effort!

So #9x is the way.

EI/RETI (was Re: Accessing disk with disabled interrupts)

1999-07-20 Thread MkII

Should I disable interrupts accessing the VDP register directly?

Yes.

Like this:
LD A,value
DI
OUT (#99),a
LD A,register+128
EI
OUT (#99),a

Keep in mind that when executing an EI the interrupts will be enabled after
the next instruction. So this is the way to keep the interrupts disabled as
short as possible, which is always preferred (although not required).

Nice tip. This reminds me of the EI/RETI pair back in the ZX era. The fact
is that...

***I DON'T REMEMBER THE REASON!!!***

Is this tip used in MSX interrupts? Why (or why not)? ZX Spectrum used IM2.

Is it legal to call 256 times #FD9F with interrupts disabled at VDP level?

Absolutely. But it might re-enable the interrupt. You'll have to check that.

OK.

Is it legal to tell Disk ROM to stop the motor with VDP interrupts
disabled?

Yes. Basically the DiskROM has nothing to do with the VDP. Just keep in mind
that there is a chance that they enable the interrupts.

But not at VDP level I suppose.

But why do you need to keep the interrupts disabled???

It was posted on this list that F700 had disk speed problems because of
poor disk interrupts. One way to cope with this was disabling interrupts
during disk loading. This way the F700 problem is solved at boot time
without disturbing other MSX models and without the hassle of saving/RET
poking/restoring the int vector.

Re: Text editor w/ varitabs

1999-07-20 Thread MkII

Is there any good text editor with variable tabs per line (for assembler
 readibility's sake!)?

Well if you want a text-editor I suggest Ted, very good although it has
Dutch menus, which may be a problem (but I think not).

Why is it not available in plain english? It's not a big problem but feels
a bit uncomfortable and gives software a bit too much of a "public domain"
look.

But if you're programming assembler: GO GET COMPASS!!!
(Yes, I'm shouting!)

I'll have a dekko at it (now I'm deaf btw!) 8;)

??? So you want different TAB settings per instruction???

My message was messed up (by your reader or my poster). I don't want
different tabs per instruction but per line field.

LABEL DJNZ LABEL; FOO
LD A,B ; BAR

That is, something like 8 spaces per colonless label (so you can fit it in
the same line), 5 per instruction (the longer mnemonics HALT, DJNZ, etc.
have 4 chars) and a suitable space for comments without touching the
instruction paramenters.

Well, if you want readability I suggest you drop your entire current layout
and go start a new one:

Mmm... me and the lot of 6502/Z80 coders back in the very early 80s were
using that layout! See Terminator part 1 robot listings 8;)

Foobar: lda,b
djnz Foobar

Some prefer to have the labels on seperate lines because it's easier when
inserting/deleting instructions but I don't; the CTRL-L keycode of Compass
is very useful.

Just like me! It's a bit messier if you have a poor editor, which is not
our case, huh? 8;)

Also, I use lowercase characters for the code (but uppercase is nice too),
and lower+uppercase-characters for Program-labels (like Foobar), and
uppercade-labels for data:
DATA: DB#FF

Well, it's almost mandatory to use lowercase for 68000-like assembler,
since it resembles a high level language:

FooBarLongLabel movem.l d0-d3/a0-a2/a5,-(sp) * Foo bar loong comment
eori.b #$25,$22(a0,d0.l) * Foo bar looonger comment

That in uppercase would be DEADLY!

But I personally prefer 8-bit assembler in uppercase. It looks more
consistent, and opcodes ain't that messy to become unreadable. Again, see
Terminator. Robot listins wouldn't be as impressive in lowercase 8;)

I really hope you take over these programming-habits because it really makes
your source much easier to read, it really makes a difference!

As I've said it was a problem of TAB conversion between our mailing
programs. My habits are just "classic" early 80s stuff: uppercase
varitabs. Nothing that messy. They were actually stroking listings on
teletypes so the code had to be real readable! *:D

And btw I'm quite proud of my crystal clear assembler. I even don't put a
single comment mixed with my code if it's not a matter of life/death! I
prefer a short and clear header description, clear labels and equates, the
right amount of "air" and choosing only the best way to do things (there's
only one, so there's no chance of misunderstanding).

I also prefer notes, diagrams and algorithms off the source, even though
I'm proud of my ASCII art 8;)

Kiss you lot.

Re: Those Microsoft coders...

1999-07-20 Thread MkII

Disassembling a standard MSX-DOS V1 boot sector I've come across the
following:

It uses a BDOS function 6 loop to output the boot error string instead of
 function 9 (!). Any reason?

Yes. It probably is a null-terminated string, which sometimes is nessacary
if you for instance want to display a '$'-sign, or when you are printing an
ASCIIZ-string Dos2 uses for its diskroutines.

But this string:

C085426F6F74206572 DEFM"Boot error"
726F720D0A DEFB#0D,#0A
C09150726573732061 DEFM"Press any key for retry"
6E79206B657920 DEFB#0D,#0A
666F7230726574
72790D0A

Has not a single $. Neither DOS2 did exist. It's the bootsector as found in
the Philips NMS 8250 MSX-DOS release *1*.

I really don't understand the programming style of the bootsector. Really
BAD habits.

By the way, if you disassemble function 9 you'll see it's nothing more but a
loop which calls function 6 until it encounters an '$'.

I guess so, but that's precisely the reason to use 9 instead of reinventing
it and the wheel!

Haven't checked that but I'm quite sure, I know quite a bit how Dos is
programmed and I really expect those kind of tricks of them.

Tricks? To repeat a ROM function? To use JPs in loopless near jumps??? 8:?

There're spurious JPs where it should have been JRs (!). Plenty of
space??? *:D

Well JPs are a bit faster than JRs. Speed is more important on MSX than
space I think. Although in the case of Dos they don't seem to use that
policy. But the mapperroutines are as fast as they can get. They get credits
from me for that.

Faster for an error branch (no S/M code)?

Is the whole MS firmware this quality?

Bootstrap SP alternate register set cart x-ecution

Standard MSX-DOS bootsectors seem to set stack pointer at #F51F. Is that a

Do MSX-DOS or Disk BASIC ROM reserve alternate (EXX) or index registers for

Does the F700 slowdown apply only at file level or also at sector level? Is

PSG wave stop

1999-07-10 Thread MkII

What's the actual effect of setting both pitch registers of a channel to 0?

A "frozen" wave or a "supersonic" pitch wave?

I'd like to stop a sound without dropping volume to 0 (resulting in a
"pop!"), and I've discovered setting both pitch regs to 0 stops the sound
smoothly.

But... if it actually outputs a supersonic sound... don't like my
neighbourhood dogs around nor my brain being damaged!

Re: PSG pitch table, wave re-trigger, 4-bit PCM YM/AYdifferences

1999-07-09 Thread MkII

I'm looking for an accurate pitch to tone registers value translation table
 for PSG.
Do you mean, how values you can use in (in case of use channel A)
register 0 and 1?
If yes, you can use de following:

 Fclock
Freq=--
 16*(r0+r1*256)

where Freq mean the frequency you wish
Fclock mean the CPU's clock (3579545 Hz on TR)
r0 and r1 is register 0 and 1 of the PSG

Yes, but I'm looking for a precalculated table, just to save the hassle of
searching for an "equal-tempered" scale in Hz and coding a piece of BASIC
or CM to generate the table 8:\

What's the recommended method to setup PSG for 4-bit PCM playback? Setting
the lowest pitch? Disabling both noise tone in the mixer?
Ricbit can tell you more details about that, but in the simple way:
-disable noise
-set R0 and R1 (channel A) with 0
-drop the sample data in R8 (channel A)
only these 3 things. Is it hard?? ;-)
Note that the mixer values has no effect, you can disable or enable the
channel, the sample will be played anyway.

OK, thanks. I did it on the ZX Spectrum an the ST, but they have the Yamaha
flavour of the PSG.

Kiss you lot.

S/F motor off

1999-07-09 Thread MkII

Talking about flashing drive LEDs...

What's the best system-friendly way to stop floppy disk (or whatever
spinning device) motor before taking over system?

Bearing in mind that data may have been loaded from another device (HD,

not in use for a long time.

AARGH!! (was Re: Fast VRAM loader)

1999-07-09 Thread MkII

Oh my!

My loading routine was OK! I've just tested in my NMS 8250 and it's really
fast. Less than 6 sec per screen 8 where basic takes almost 10!

*BUT*BUT*BUT*BUT*

The problem is with my F700!!! It takes 400% more time to load!!! The drive
LED even turns off when feeding data to VRAM!!! Cannot test BASIC load
times as I have no working keyboard.

I'll try to test on a G3/F500 tomorrow.

Any clue on this strange behaviour?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I buffer data at #8000 and the routine lives near #100. I guess BDOS is
going crazy slotswapping and bankswitching (dunno actually the innards of
BDOS!)...?!? I'll try to call from #C000 area...

Fast VRAM loader

What's the fastest way to load say a screen 8 file into VRAM using MSX-DOS
and a 16KB max buffer? Which file reading function, register size, buffer
address are the best?

How can you feed VRAM in a reasonable system friendly way while keeping
disk performance as the next section of the file is being read?

Does having BIOS + DISK-ROM already living at -7FFF have an impact on
performance?

Much too used to step motors and head settling times I guess...

Bad habits?

VDP memory write timings

1999-06-30 Thread MkII

I have to write a gfx data burst to VRAM as quickly as possible while the
display, and possibly sprites are enabled.

I've noticed data corruption when using quick transfer loops (via POP) that
disappears when display is disabled.

Is there an accurate way to determine required VDP timings and ensure
proper functionality on all MSX models regardless of different clocked CPUs?

TurboGrafx vs MSX (was Re: Wanted: Bee Card/Softcard adapters)

1999-06-30 Thread MkII

There is a simple and single reason that makes not possible to directly
use
PC-Engine/TurboGrafx code on the MSX.

The reason is that it uses a dedicated(mildly modified) 6502 as main
CPU.
Just like NES and Super NES(last one is sligthly based on the Supergrafx
PC-Engine
plus a dedicated sony audio engine.)

So tell me, what are exactly those similarities/differences between the
MSX, TurboGrafx SNES???

What kind of cards are these ?

They are also used at least on the Atari Portfolio handheld computer and
the NEC Turbographx (PC-Engine).

Dunno exactly whether they were designed or just manufactured by Hudson
Soft (hence the name). A Spanish company was also producing its own flavour.

They're credit card size and thinner than a PCMCIA card, with electric
contacts on one side instead of the "mini-Shugart" hole matrix.

Re: Strange gfx7 m2 sprite issues

1999-06-14 Thread MkII

I checked your overscan-proggie and it indeed looks very, very nice.

Thanks -_-v Please come back for more.

NB: The display adjustment trick DOES NOT WORK since display start is only
checked ONCE per frame by the vertical blanking circuitry. You can only
alter horizontal adjustment on the fly (the register is checked every
 raster line).

Fortunately, 'cause otherwise my nice 4-direction smooth scroll (which still
isn't perfect!) wouldn't have worked.

So what does prevent it from being perfect?

I've noticed rare sprite behavior when using graphics 7 (SCREEN 8) mode 2
 sprites.

 1) It's impossible to obtain opaque black (color code + active pixel
 on the pattern).

True. You'll have to (re)set bit 5 in VDP r#8 (something like "Transparant
mode enable").

It works! Thanks 8:D

 2) "Bright" black (color code 1000) yields *ORANGE* (!!!).

Color code 1000??? What do you mean with 1000??? Is it an RGB-code (which
should then be 3-digit, not 4-digit), or is is a binary number (then state %
or b in front of it)???
If it's binary then it's color code 8, and if I do COLOR 15,8 in Basic I get
a red background.

It's a 4-bit digital RGBI sprite color. To be precise, it's an IGRB color
code (Intensity Green Red Blue) that works in gfx7. In other modes it's
just a 4-bit index for the 16 color palette.

1000 should be an "intensity enabled" black, but yields pure orange on a MSX2.

Attached is a tiny test. It shows 2 horizontal orange blocks when in
theory
it should be a solid opaque black square with two "bright" black strips.
I've tested it only on 9938 VDPs.

I'd appreciate if someone could test the program on later VDPs so I could
make the assumption it works this way on all MSX models.

On my v9938 VDP I saw a bright 2x2 green dot.
On my v9958 too.

Oh yes. And if you wiggle your joystick in port 1 you should be able to
paint the screen with a smooth overscan scroll!!!

But what *around* that green dot? black or orange stripes? or nothing???

By the way, this file only worked in Dos1-environment... Why??? Are you
changing the memory or so??? Also (and that also goes for the
overscan-demo), your programs reset afterwards... is it so difficult to
execute a BIOS-call to select screen 0 again and the terminate the
Dos-program (JP 0 or LD C,0:CALL 5)???

I just can test my programs in MSX2 computers running DOS1. They work 100%
in those environments. I abuse the memory since it's just a quick and dirty
test. I don't check for system memory boundaries yet -neither drive spin
down-, sorry.

The program indeed reselects screen 0 by using a BIOS call, but DOS2 memory
is likely to be seriously trashed at this point.

Hope to fix it in forthcoming tests. Watch out.

Errm... Something completely different... I checked the Yamaha-site, and at
the videoprocessor-part I read the following:

Product: V9938
Display Type: CRT
Display Format: Up to 512x424
Grayscale Colors: Up to 512
Output: Linear RGB Composite Video

Up to 512 colors???
How did they think to do that??? I hope not using screensplits...

It means a 512 color palette (9-bit RGB).

And about the greyscale-bit... if I set the bit in one of the VDP's
control-registers (0, 1, 8, 9) my screen does everything but turn grey.

Dunno. Will test/investigate as well.

Kiss you lot.

Re: MSX and gambling boards

1999-06-13 Thread MkII

We are an Italian company and we produce coin-op boards and software.
Since the capabilities of the embedded boards that are normally used for
the delivery of gambling software are very limited, we would like to
check if it could be possible to integrate an MSX computer on a
JAMMA-standard board (the JAMMA connector is the standard connector in
  this field).

Aha! Sounds like an original idea!

We already had this idea. See my previous postings. A vertical display
flavour of our videogame will be presented next AAM MSX user meeting at
Barcelona running on an impressive MSX JAMMA coin-op cabinet.

If someone could supply a cabinet at the forthcoming fairs in Japan we also
could present the Japanese vertical version.

Kiss you lot.
