 Hi all,

 I'm testing some math fonts with ConTeXt in the current TeXLive
 pretest (2012.05.25 18:21). I'm not sure which are supposed to work
 with MKIV, but I found typescripts for the following ones in
 type-imp-*.mkiv which are also included in TeXLive:

 * Latin Modern
 * Euler
 * Asana
 * Palatino (px)
 * Times (tx)
 * Utopia (mathdesign)
 * Charter (mathdesign)
 * Garamond (mathdesign)
 * Antykwa Torunska
 * Iwona
 * Kurier
 * Xits

 Compiling the example in the attachment I found than Euler and all
 Mathdesign derivatives are not working.

Not working in what sense? That you don't get the font or that you
requested or that you get wrong output? (I never tried to use
Mathdesign in ConTeXt, I actually didn't notice that it was even
supported.)

 Does anyone know if Millenial will be supported by TeXLive 2012?

I don't find the font on CTAN. I guess that would be the main requirement.

 Also
 MKII supported Fourier (for Utopia and Schoolbook). What is the status
 of this font in MKIV?

I leave that question to others.

 P.S. Euler is working in the 2012.05.26 16:40 Standalone version.

The version of ConTeXt in TeX Live is almost the same as in minimals
(ok, I didn't check in the version from 26th because I was away for
the weekend, if the difference is actually in that version), but I
somehow suspect that the font (euler.otf) is missing on CTAN and in
TeX Live. Something for Khaled to answer. The font is also being used
in Maps and ConTeXt Proceedings, so it would actually be very nice if
the font was present in TL. (I find it strange enough that I didn't
notice that when playing with ConTeXt Proceedings, but it may be that
I was simply using the ConTeXt Distribution or failed to realize that
I got the wrong font.)

Thank you very much for spotting these.

The font was never done and I'm not very happy with its current state
(it was my first attempt at an OpenType math font, now that I learnt
much I want to redo it), there were never any releases and thus no
upload to CTAN.

Another weird observation: Kurier is not working at all.

Plus, Asana-Math and Xits are not installed as part of ConTeXt scheme.
Should I add them? (It's size is 0.5 + 1.5 MB while in tar.xz.)

Hans, maybe you could add Tim's example into your testsuite (but each
math font should be surrounded with \bgroup...\egroup or start/stop).

texlive/2012/texmf-dist/fonts/opentype/public/xits/xits-regular.otf

and in mkiv under

Asana-math is in texlive, but not in mkiv -- I don't know why.

[NTG-context] thelabel problem

I installed ConTeXt in 2009 in my laptop and wrote some documents. Now I
have installed ConTeXt in other computer and tried to process some of those
documents but it doesn't work.

It looks that there is something wrong with Metapost/Metafun. I have tried
a simple program like

draw thelabel.rt(the right way,a) withcolor .625red ;
\stopuseMPgraphic

\useMPgraphic{gh}

Then I get:

In this case \int and \sum are of the same size, so it appears as a
design choice, and more importantly, we can patch the font to change
DisplayOperatorMinHeight.

It's really weird ... in the virtual font builder we have

DisplayOperatorMinHeight  = t . math_operator_size. text_style

and there has been a good reason for this otherwise it would not be
there. For the normal (12pt) size this becomes 1040448 for px as well as
tx. Both fonts (when looking at them with \showfont[pxex.tfm] etc have
the same shapes.

Concerning the rest of the parameters, only for this case irrelevant
differ a bit.

% name px tx

% RadicalRuleThickness  46399   44040   2359
% FractionDenominatorDisplayStyleGapMin 139197  132120  7077
% OverbarVerticalGap139197  132120  7077
% RadicalDisplayStyleVerticalGap133103  130744  2359
% UnderbarVerticalGap   139197  132120  7077
% FractionNumeratorGapMin   46399   44040   2359
% OverbarRuleThickness  46399   44040   2359
% StackGapMin   139197  132120  7077
% RadicalVerticalGap57998.7555050   2948.75
% StackDisplayStyleGapMin   324793  308280  16513
% AccentBaseHeight  353107.968  353894.4-786.4320003
% FractionRuleThickness 46399   44040   2359
% FractionDenominatorGapMin 46399   44040   2359
% OverbarExtraAscender  46399   44040   2359
% SubSuperscriptGapMin  185596  176160  9436
% MinConnectorOverlap   11599.7511010   589.75
% FractionNumeratorDisplayStyleGapMin   139197  132120  7077
% UnderbarRuleThickness 46399   44040   2359
% RadicalExtraAscender  46399   44040   2359

So, there is no real reason for px to behave different than tx. However,
when we nil DisplayOperatorMinHeight we get the scaled glyph. Okay, we
could have threshold issue but even putting some real large math mess
after itm it will not bump to the next size shape (there is only one
larger size btw) .. puzzling

BTW, what is the status of Pagella Math? Should we default to that
instead of px-fonts?

It does make reading more difficult. I still cannot decide. In the end
legibility should be more important, so ragged right is better like you said.

Sure, I wanted to say: it would not break the overall design at all :)

Just wondering, why is Optima-Regular embeded so many times?

We wanted to have a sans serif font for the viewgraphs that matches the Palatino (orig.
1948). So we went for Optima (1952-1955 and also from Hermann Zapf). Wikipedia says
Optima's capitals (like Palatino's) are directly derived from the classic Roman
monumental capital model [...]. I think, it does look good together. We also wanted
a TeX Gyre font as main font, so that it is available on every system.

Of course a good choice, but I meant something different. When I have a
look at the Properties of the document in the Adobe Reader or just list
the fonts with pdffonts command on linux, then Optima-Regular is
listed 141 times. Figure labels use sans serif, so I'm wondering why so
many times the font is included.

Thank you. I check it, and you are right. I forgot to include the
definitions when I cut and paste that part of the code. I thought the
problem was related to the btex command, but it's not.

The first line is:

u=1.000mm; linecap:=butt; linejoin:=mitered; path pp; picture pic;
labeloffset:=0;

I compared it with your code. The numeric u; definition is missing in my
file. I have included it and now it works!!

It's really weird since I compiled it in 2009 and it worked as is. I still
have the pdf output file...??

 Should I add them? (It's size is 0.5 + 1.5 MB while in tar.xz.)

If you feel like adding some packages to the ConTeXt scheme, I'd
strongly suggest libertineotf. It's one of the best free font around (I
believe it's not by chance that they were used on Fonts in ConTeXt and
Layouts in ConTeXt), its coverage is *huge* and the typescript is
included in the core. It increases the installation size by a 8 MB (I
think it's worth of). Ok, not a big deal, because it can be installed,
but just my two cents (the same goes ever for the Minimals,
anyway... not a big deal but nice to have).

%% start minimal
\setupfootnotes[way=bychapter]

\starttext

\chapter{chap}

hello\footnote{ciao}

\chapter{chap}

hello\footnote{ciao}

\stoptext
%%% stop

The numbering is not by chapter any more.

(from TeXlive pretest)
mtx-context | current version: 2012.05.25 18:21

also happens with the Minimals
mtx-context | current version: 2012.05.26 16:40

Further problems are found on a document of mine, which once compiled
with these versions, have the first footnote starting with the number 3.

I'm bisecting and I'll let you know once I've found what it triggers
it (because it's longish and doesn't really help as it is now).

Best wishes.

Ok, thanks, that works for the bychapter thing. (Apologies, I didn't
keep track of this setup change).

But the 3 numbering is another problem. It starts at 3 by itself. As
I said, I'm trying to figure out what it triggers it, as the document is
long and will take a while to strip it down.

right page: background graphic

The transparent pages are left out in pagination.
Between chapters (i.e. stories), the following macro does what I want:

\def\DoublePic#1{
\page[right] % foreground picture on transparent paper

\setuppagenumbering[state=stop]\setuppagenumber[state=stop]\par

\setuppagenumbering[state=start]
}

Now, the publisher would like to move the picture pages in the middle of
the stories, i.e. I need them to float here without manual page breaking.
How can I achieve that?

I’d also appreciate enhancements to my macro above.

Thank you very much in advance!

[NTG-context] \footnote numbering starting with 3 [Was: ConTeXt MKIV 2012.05.22 and \footnote]

\starttext

\placelist[chapter,section]

hello\footnote{ciao}

\chapter{Hello\footnote{weird!}}

\section{Hello\footnote{another fn}}

hello\footnote{ciao}

The first footnote will start at 3 by itself.

There is some weird interference between the placelist and the
footnote, as removing the \placelist the numbering starts correctly.

Found in both the latest minimals and in the TeXlive pretest.

Still, given the large amount of data that gets printed during a
compilation (it is basically impossible to figure out if something
goes wrong without carefully looking at the log), I would also support
the idea to print missing characters by default.

I'm also contemplating a different idea (after TL): wouldn't it be
nice if ConTeXt (luatex) would print warnings (missing image, missing
module, missing character, ...) in colour (if that's supported), to
make it clearly stand out from the rest?

clang and CMake use that regularly for example.

Hi Mojca and Khaled,

You're right about Kurier, I've overlooked it. Asana is also not
installed with Standalone.

I've always found it regrettable Fourier is not longer supported in
MKIV, so I hoped Utopia+Mathdesign would be a nice replacement. There
are typescripts for Mathdesign+{Utopia,Charter,Garamond}, but both the
roman font and the math font are not loaded.

Shouldn't we have to support the Type1 version of Euler in TeXLive if
the OTF version won't be included? I missed Fourier but maybe others
will mis Euler when they switch to MKIV.

Regards,
Tim

2012/5/28 Mojca Miklavec mojca.miklavec.li...@gmail.com:
 Another weird observation: Kurier is not working at all.
 Plus, Asana-Math and Xits are not installed as part of ConTeXt scheme.
 Should I add them? (It's size is 0.5 + 1.5 MB while in tar.xz.)

 Hans, maybe you could add Tim's example into your testsuite (but each
 math font should be surrounded with \bgroup...\egroup or start/stop).

Euler is also used in the magazine ... but of course it is up to
Khaled if he doesn't want to include the font. Khaled - would you at

installation into TL) or put it into tlcontrib?

I would find it hard to tell whether MKIV should fall back to Type1
Euler or not, but I'm not sure that the sole lack of font in
distribution justifies this fallback. Even if the font is not perfect,
I don't see any reason why it couldn't be in TeX Live, even if with a
big warning that the metrics might change in future.

Having a font as part of the distro is a convinience, but normally, I just
add (or git clone or svn checkout) the fonts that I use in

$HOME/texmf/fonts/opentype/

and sync $HOME/texmf across computers with dropbox. So, it is not a big
deal if a font is not part of TL.

[NTG-context] How to typeset recipe symbol for a doctor's prescription pad

2012-05-28 Thread yuji sakai
Good day!

Been trying to typeset a prescription pad template for a doctor but am
stumped at the recipe symbol. Searched the internet for help but I just
couldn't find it.

Hope someone who has tried using this symbol in MKIV can help me with this
one.

Thanks.

Joel Mendoza

Ah --- are you running mkiv ?
It's ok with mkii, ie
mtxrun texexec kk.tex

I need to check with mkiv, ie
context kk.tex

 indeed

 Still, given the large amount of data that gets printed during a
 compilation (it is basically impossible to figure out if something
 goes wrong without carefully looking at the log), I would also support
 the idea to print missing characters by default.

 I'm also contemplating a different idea (after TL): wouldn't it be
 nice if ConTeXt (luatex) would print warnings (missing image, missing
 module, missing character, ...) in colour (if that's supported), to
 make it clearly stand out from the rest?

 clang and CMake use that regularly for example.

mkiv has
draw externalfigure
while mkii has
externalfigure

This is ok

Testing

\startuseMPgraphic{gh}

numeric u;
u:=1;
textX:=87.51u;
textY:=96.31u;
pic:=thelabel.urt(btex {Test} etex scaled 1.00,(0,0));
draw pic shifted (textX, textY);
draw externalfigure mill.png xscaled 80.13u yscaled 60.09u shifted
(69.85u,20.30u) ;

\stopuseMPgraphic

\useMPgraphic{gh}

\stoptext

Also search
externalfigure vs. draw externalfigure in metafun

That is unicode 211E character, although in most fonts it does not look
nice.
