[nysbirds-l] Fwd: [cayugabirds-l] Elmira Limpkin

2023-10-22 Thread Richard Guthrie
Forwarding this post about LIMPKIN in New York State Begin forwarded message:From: Dave Nutter Date: October 22, 2023 at 10:18:50 PM EDTTo: CayugaBirds-L b Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Elmira LimpkinReply-To: Dave Nutter On 12 October Barb Borelli found and photographed a Limpkin along the Chemung River in Elmira and reported it to eBird. This morning (22 October) Martin Cain refound & photographed it, also along the edge of the river. This afternoon Ann Mitchell & I went to look for it, and we were close by, as were Adam Farid & Mike Gullo, when Jeremy Collison discovered the Limpkin a hundred yards from the river standing and resting in the dead-leaf-strewn floodplain forest immediately southeast of Pirozzolo Park in an area which seemed to be associated with a culvert below the corner of the levee. The bird was standing almost under the Japanese Knotweed which covered the embankment above. We were surprised when it walked toward us, coming within a few yards behind a narrow screen of knotweed, then it turned and strolled toward the river, sometimes out in the open, and rested again at the top of the riverbank for several minutes, remaining there when we left at 4pm. During the 40 minutes we watched it, it was silent and neither flew nor fed but seemed relaxed & healthy. Later observers saw it catching worms in the leaf litter. If you seek this bird, don’t just look at the edge of the river, look in the woods, too. Pirozzolo Park is near the West Elmira fire station on Water Street. This is the second NYS record for this species. The first record was just last autumn along the Niagara River. That bird was captured just before the deadly blizzard hit Buffalo, and I believe it was released in South Carolina. - - Dave Nutter

[nysbirds-l] Possible Flamingo sighting- Ulster County

2023-10-01 Thread Richard Guthrie
I don’t see it having been reported here thus far:

There was a sighting report today at about 1:30 PM of a “large pink heron like
bird with black underwings “ flying north along the Hudson River at Saugerties,
Ulster County.

Searchers spanned the river viewing points from Saugerties to Albany and beyond
with no subsequent sightings.

It would be worth checking suitable habitat sites in the upper Hudson Valley to
see if this pans out.

[nysbirds-l] Fwd: [cayugabirds-l] Possible new birding spot in Ovid?

2023-08-16 Thread Richard Guthrie
A bit off topic but important opportunity for statewide input from concerned birders. This could become a major birding attraction and related economic benefit to the loval  community   Begin forwarded message:From: t...@ottcmail.comDate: August 14, 2023 at 6:26:47 PM PDTTo: cayugabird...@cornell.eduSubject: [cayugabirds-l] Possible new birding spot in Ovid?Reply-To: t...@ottcmail.com

Hi,

Until recently the NYS Department of Corrections ran a shock
incarceration camp on the grounds of the former Willard Psychiatric
facility.  NYS has closed the shock incarceration camp and Seneca
County is now trying to identify the best use of this land for he
future.  Last month the County IDA and its consultant held a public
open house where they solicited ideas.  Sarah Davis, the IDA
Executive Director, asked for additional public comment to be
emailed to her.

A follow up email from Ms. Davis stated in part:
Before finalizing the concept site plan, we
will host another workshop to present some initial concepts and
make sure that we understood and incorporated your feedback
accurately. We will send you another email to let you know the
date once it is finalized. In the meantime, the materials from the
first workshop have been posted to the Seneca County IDA website:
  https://www.senecacountyida.org/highest-best-use-study.
You can find the information sheets, boards, and maps there, as
well as more information about the consulting team working with us
  on the plan.
As the linked maps show, this is a very large parcel of land that
includes a long stretch of lakefront - at the meeting they said
there was a mile of lakefront.  There are many buildings on the
property, most of which have not been maintained and will have to be
torn down, although it might be possible to save a few.  A large
part of the property has been pretty much untouched for 100 years.
All of this land has been off limits to the public for decades and
exactly what birds might be there is not known, but it includes a
deep forested ravine, very similar to the ravine just south of there
where Louisiana Waterthrush are heard, and a mixed upland forest
that likely hosts both migrating and nesting passerines.  There also
is a small wetland.  A 40+ acre portion on the east side of the
county road has a half-dozen buildings in two clusters and some
woodland, but much of it is grassland.

The people running the meeting in July seemed to expect that the
land to be divided up among several things.  Why not set aside some
of it for a bird sanctuary with a birding trail?  There is state
land close by - Sampson SP, Bonavista Golf Course, and Willard
Wildlife Management Area - but none of these is managed for birding,
or is particularly birder-friendly.  Sampson, for example, recently
was put under private management and a great deal of edge habitat
was destroyed immediately after that.

The disposition of the Willard land is a situation where relatively
few voices can have a large impact.  If you think that setting aside
some of this parcel for birds and birding is a good idea, you might
want to send an email to Ms. Davis
.  If you live in Seneca County it would be good to mention that but
it also is helpful for her to hear from others in the region who
would make use of this property if it were birder-friendly.
Somewhat to my surprise, it doesn't sound like the County is hoping
the land will all be converted to expensive housing and businesses,
but they need public comment to demonstrate that there is interest
in other uses.  Comments need not be formal or lengthy, but it would
be helpful to say what you would like to see done with part of the
property and how you would make use of that part.

[nysbirds-l] Mississippi Kites - nesting in southern Saratoga County

2022-06-10 Thread Richard Guthrie
Passing on the current status:

Nesting is CONFIRMED based on the observation of them carrying nesting
material (sticks) to the suspected nesting location.

The birds were seen this morning, Friday, June 10 after a no-show
yesterday.

They are in a rather heavily wooded residential neighborhood and tend to
disappear behind private houses and out of sight. But they will
occasionally fly up above the treetops and would then be visible from
public viewing places along the several winding residential roads in the
area.

The neighbors, thus far, have been welcoming for the most part. But as
usual, care, courtesy, and concern should be displayed by all visitors.
That should go without saying. But bears a reminder.

The most favorable location to watch for these birds is near the
intersection of Meridian St and Ridge Ln which are off Ushers Road / off
Exit 10 of the Adirondack Northway (I-87) in southern Saratoga County
(just north of Albany).

Good luck if you try for them and please keep us posted either through

[nysbirds-l] Hunting season Oct. 1

2021-09-30 Thread Richard Guthrie
Heads-up

Small game and beginning with Snow Goose, waterfowl hunting season starts
tomorrow, Oct. 1st.

Despite objections, duck hunting and deer hunting are permitted on the
Coxsackie Grasslands. The persuading argument put up was that there's no
evidence that birders are discouraged from entering the grounds even though
the posting signs indicate that hunters may be present.

At the Coxsackie Grasslands, the duck season runs from Oct. 16 through Nov.
28th, and Dec. 4th through Dec. 10th. The second season elsewhere in the
southeastern zone runs through Dec. 19th.

So, be aware that at the Coxsackie Grasslands, duck hunting is permitted
up to 3 hours after sunrise and then from 3 hours before sunset. And, deer
hunting is permitted in the deer season. For December, the permitted
hunting hours would be up to apx. 10 AM and after apx. 1:30 PM. Hunting
will also be permitted through December 10th, and during the week of Dec.
26th through Jan. 1st.

Plan and dress accordingly.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Cold Spring Harbor Spoonbill Stuff

2021-07-29 Thread Richard Guthrie
Remote birding

If the bird is there, there it is. No matter how it is detected.

How that knowledge is used is a different matter.

eBird even has a category for accepting records derived from night calls
monitored by digital recording devices and introduced by later downloads
into the database.

But a bird viewed at a feeder cam isn't acceptable.

I can understand that we don't want several hundred reports of the same

Re: [nysbirds-l] Cold Spring Harbor Spoonbill Stuff

2021-07-29 Thread Richard Guthrie
Remote birding

If the bird is there, there it is. No matter how it is detected.

How that knowledge is used is a different matter.

eBird even has a category for accepting records derived from night calls
monitored by digital recording devices and introduced by later downloads
into the database.

But a bird viewed at a feeder cam isn't acceptable.

I can understand that we don't want several hundred reports of the same
vagrant at a feeder entered into the data. But at least one entry ought to
be acceptable. All the other duplicates (except perhaps for subsequent
dates ) could be disregarded. But, wait. Don't we accept dozens of reports
of the same rarity reported by many observers at a stakeout? This is how
programmers earn their keep.

[nysbirds-l] Regarding the Dutchess County spoonbill

2021-07-22 Thread Richard Guthrie
The previously reported Roseate Spoonbill in Dutchess County has been seen by
many appreciative birders throughout the day today. Whether it continues or for
how long are, of course, unknowns.

The land owner has graciously extended permission for gentle birders to walk in
on their private lane to view the bird better.

The rules are simple: park elsewhere (Holiday Inn?) and walk in on the lane,
but NO FURTHER THAN the power station. Do not drive in the lane and do not
impede access for others.

Of course, be courteous and don’t crowd the bird.

Good luck if you go for it.

Yes, I am enjoying this discussion.

I’ve watched young gulls (both Herring and Great Black-backed) doing pretty

[nysbirds-l] That Heerman’s Gull

2021-05-31 Thread Richard Guthrie
A (The) Heerman’s Gull that visited Massachusetts and Rhode Island recently
turned up at Cape May, New Jersey yesterday. If it is the same one, then surely
it passed through New York somewhere. Ah, but where?, when? Anyone have random
photos of gull gatherings that might warrant a good scrutinizing?

[nysbirds-l] That Heerman’s Gull

2021-05-31 Thread Richard Guthrie
A (The) Heerman’s Gull that visited Massachusetts and Rhode Island recently
turned up at Cape May, New Jersey yesterday. If it is the same one, then surely
it passed through New York somewhere. Ah, but where?, when? Anyone have random
photos of gull gatherings that might warrant a good scrutinizing?

Gee, I'm sorry everyone for my dumbass mistake yesterday. There's no excuse.

I should probably have waited till I got home and could actually see what I
had typed into the tiny cellphone keyboard.

It won't happen again, at least I hope not.

So now would be a good time to end this thread and let these lists go back
to their intended purposes.

[nysbirds-l] Violet-green Swallow update - no subsequent sightings today

2021-04-22 Thread Richard Guthrie
The Violet-green Swallow that was photographed at Vischer Ferry Nature and
Historic Preserve in southern Saratoga County this morning was not refound
throughout the rest of the day today, Thursday, April 22.

The bird had been photographed as it perched on a branch along the old
canal tow-path about 1/4 to 1/2 mile west of the "Whipple Bridge" entrance
to the preserve (at the intersection of Riverview and Van Vranken Roads in
Halfmoon, NY).

There was a congregation of about 30 Northern Rough-winged, Tree, and Barn
Swallows milling around the target area. There was also a larger
concentration of swallows at a marina to the east of the preserve and
probably other groups out of sight along the Mohawk River.

The weather there was rather brutal with biting winds much of the time and
occasional snow flurries with about a dozen or so birders toughing it out
through much of the day.

Given the weather for the next day or so, it's unlikely the swallows will
continue their migration journey soon. But the prospects of re-finding this
bird is in the order of the needle in the haystack odds.. But there will be
some of us trying anyway.

Updates will be posted as appropriate.

Good luck if you go for it.

The Tundra Bean Goose was searched for by many hopefuls today. So far it has
not been seen. But (to the disappointment to some - imagine that) a Pink

[nysbirds-l] Goose access info

2021-03-14 Thread Richard Guthrie
Despite the sign saying “Open to the public “ the RV trailer campground is not
accessible.

The state boat launch is open but the goose has been playing nip and tuck
amongst the trailers and has not been seen in about an hour. It is probably
resting with the flock of 20 or so Canada Geese.

[nysbirds-l] Color banded Ring-billed Gulls

2021-03-05 Thread Richard Guthrie
Yesterday, then today, I came across two different color banded Ring-billed
Gulls. One in a parking lot in Catskill. The other at the Coxsackie Boat
Launch, both in the Greene County.

Yesterday's [Blue band on Left Leg with the code: "*1ZT*"] was banded as a
juvenile in Quebec in 2013, Prior to my report, it had been seen in Quebec
twice in April and again in June, 2017.

Today's [ blue band on Left Leg with "*FJY*"] was banded as an adult male,
also in Quebec in June, 2019. I saw and reported this same one back in
November last year, also at the Coxsackie Boat Launch. It had also been
seen up in Quebec twice in May, 2020. So this one was seen at the same
location on its way south last year, and again on its way north this year.

[nysbirds-l] Private property / Ferruginous Hawk

2021-01-19 Thread Richard Guthrie
Reminder: the hawk will on occasion go to fields in private property. DO NOT
trespass. The landowners are adamant about this. While some have been lenient
about allowing limited access on occasion this is not one of them.

Don’t ruin it for the local birders who have had long time good relations with
the local farmers.

[nysbirds-l] White Red-tails

2021-01-07 Thread Richard Guthrie
I saw yet another report of an all-white Red-tailed Hawk. This one in
Ulster County - away from where one that had been previously reported.

So. Are all-white Red-tails increasing in number and distribution?

Seems so to me.

Do you know of the location of one? Without giving specific location, can
you provide a general idea where it is/was?

I know for example that there were the following:
Millbrook, Dutchess County - nesting female which was around for about 15
years, at least; not recent
Stone Ridge, Ulster County - another nesting female around for maybe 20
years; no recent reports;
New Paltz, Ulster County - recent
Near Columbia County Airport - Ghent, Recent but no reports in the last few
years;
Near Hoosick, Rensselaer County; few sightings from about 10 years ago

Did I miss any?

Current ones?
