Funny, I'd never thought of using a laser pointer to assist AF. I don't have a

HI Ann,

I'm very tempted by the Benbo. Can you tell me if the main post is
adjustable while the legs are locked in place? And how smooth the
movement is? This is very important for what I want to do with it and
hard to tell from the pictures.

Thank Heavens we're heading for winter. No endless hours to wait until
that stupid old sun has gone, the light is fine again, it's cold enough
that everything steams and smokes as it should be. And all this at times
when one can take pictures like the one linked below and still be home
for dinner.

Add to this a K-5 and life could hardly be any better. Haven't even
needed to do a multi-exposure blending. Couldn't have dreamed of doing
this with the K-7.

Re: off-camera flash

2010-11-20 Thread Leon Altoff
Hi Ecke,

I use Pentax wireless controlled from the camera flash in almost every
situation.

The one exception (which is one I encounter all the time
unfortunately) is where you are shooting towards or through a
reflective surface - in which case the on camera flash is reflected
back to you. In that case I use the Pentax off camera flash cables
and connectors. You can use one off camera flash to control the
others in a multi flash set up, but cabling them all back to the
camera stops the flash ready light from coming on until all the
flashes are recharged.

The Sigma flashes have an interesting wireless feature in that they
pulse the AF assist to show they are charged and ready to go. this
may be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the situation. Sigma
flashes have a bad reputation from an early implementation of Pentax
Wireless, but at present they work with all the current cameras (no
guarantees for future cameras however).

Hope this helps.

Leon

I can't vouch for the k10d, but the only time the built-in wireless
trigger hasn't worked for me was when the batteries in my flash died.
I know what you mean about losin' that lovin' feelin'... I have a

I can fire the 360 & 540 together with the wireless set-up... but I
think I've only used the flashes on manual settings. Maybe using
p-ttl changes the ballgame? How does the camera deal with ttl &

so now i always import directly and automatically from the card into

  Subfolder: "Image Year/Month/Day"

(which would make a 2010 folder and place that folder within the

I guess I don't trust that to work as well. My feelings for my K10D
have deteriorated somewhat. besides, I can't save any money; I don't
have any. anything I spend is courtesy of my bank so I try to sell
more than I buy and only get what I need without delay. "need" is

the hotshoe adaptor F lets me put one flash on top plus one via the
f5p cable so it effectively acts as a splitter. not sure about the
sync cord, I think not.

does this answer it? =)

Ann, I did some pixel peeping on other photos in the set looking for evidence

That's true - and I'd have difficulty focusing in the dark for sure!...
I used to set the focus a bit shy of infinity whenever I couldn't see what

I was doing...

On my cameras auto focus won't work in that light, and I didn't bring my laser
pointer.

Pointing directly at the moon it wouldn't have made a difference, but do
polarizers have the same effect at night on darkening the blue of the sky? Can
they be used to bring out the stars better?

no clue, but I wouldnt think so...

Here's one where I used the burn in brush in lightroom to darken the sky:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/5193155990/

To do this right, I suspect I'd need to know a lot more photoshop.

And, for those that are interested some more shots from the set:

well even though it is soft - I think this one is a lot more interesting
than your night with stars shot

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/5193161970/in/set-72157625430541230/

I think it is really difficult to get an intersting shot at night with

I was driving home from dancing in SF, and seeing the mist and clouds lit by the

when I was bracketing two cameras (K20 and Kx) two lenses (16-50 & 20/1.8),
several isos and exposures, my first thought was that if I had a K-5 this would be
so much easier because I'd at least know which camera body to use. Then I realized
that for this shot I didn't need a K-5, I needed a 645D. Then I realized what I
really needed was Ralf's nightscape skills.

Where my thoughts ended up, while waiting for the 30 second exposures, plus the
30 second dark fields, is that what I'd really like to see is what Ralf could
do at night with a 645D, and that if Pentax were smart, they'd loan Ralf a 645D
for a few weeks, just to see what one could do for night time landscapes.

I need to go to bed rather than going through all of my n-dimensional
bracketing from three different shooting locations, but after a quick scan,
this seems to be one of the more promising shots:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/5191532097/

K20, ISO 400, 16-50 at 16mm f/2.8 30 second exposure. Which matches my
previous experience that the sweet spot at night is a 30 second exposure with
the K20 at ISO 400.

For the Bay Area Folks, this is shot from the frontage road, just north of
Black Road (Bear Creek exit off Hwy 17).

If there's interest, I could post my full bracketing of one of the shots. The
last one I took ran into problems because the lens started fogging up.

Thanks Ann. Most of our squirrels are of the red variety. (Others are coal
black. We don't have the grays that were familiar in Chicago and NY. ) But the
full grown reds are a lot bigger than this guy. I would guess he was only about
8 inches long. Most are about 12 inches. Hard to get a sense of scale from the
photo. He was also a lot faster than the big ones. Perhaps that's how they
survive to become big guys:-).

I wonder if Pentax Europe is easier or harder to reach than North America or
corporate?

I hope that Pentax is flooded with orders from early adopters of the 645D, and
that drives the price down, as well as helps them iron out all the wrinkles. I
hope that there are enough people complaining about lack of tethering that they
get a good tethering solution, and that it trickles down to the APS models.

I also hope that the 645DII is to the 645D what the K-5 seems to be to the K20,

I do not import direct from camera or card to LR. I also have
directories set up for Nikon, Pentax and Canon(my g3 IR P&S) and copy
my camera files/folder to which ever camera i am shooting, and use sub
folders such as 11-10-10-jays in back yard.

Those photos are copied to the folder, then i open LR and import that
directory. Seems to work well, and no lost files, so far.

thing that causes polarization of light, but that' is usually off of flat, non
conductive surfaces. Conductive surfaces (metal) don't reflect polarized light.

The effect of the atmosphere on the light, I would guess, would be the same
whether it's from the sun, or the moon.

I also expect that the color balance in both the visible and the invisible
spectra would be different between moonlight and sunlight.

I plan to sometime. It would have required thinking of it when I was grabbing
my cameras out of my car.

I think that my biggest lapse in forethought was in not bringing a microfiber
cloth to wipe the dew from the front of the lens. That may have contributed to
the softness that Ann saw.

Well, the session went quite well.

A bit of a pain with two different Canons and 1 book, but we pushed through.

One thing for me, is i have re confirmed my reasons for not buying a
Canon Dslr. Man, what a PITA their menu system is.

I think they now have a decent grasp on Tv, Av as well as M mode and
AF point adjustment and ISO.

The thing that impressed them the most was showing them the Histogram

features, and used them on our walk around of the farm.

Oh, and one of the ladies is an ex KX shooter and gave me an M 200 F4

Larry, light is light, right. The main difference is the amount that is there.
It still has the same properties so I would think it would have some effect
though it might be hard to tell while you are looking through the viewfinder.
You would also loose approximate 2 stops, so would give you longer shutter
speed. This is just speculation on my part, I have not tried using a polarizer

Try it and see what happens.

The short spiral cable is only 3 ft long, right? Why not just use the
in-camera wireless capability, if that's how far off-camera you're
going? Save your money for lenses! :)

My ttl cord is 6 ft, has the hotshoe connections built-in, and
available on amazon for about $40. I'm not sure I understand why the
3-pc set is more versatile... What kind of jacks are on the hotshoe
adaptors? Would they be used for anything other than the f5p ttl
cord? Could you use a (pc or 1/8") sync cord to connect to manual
off-camera flash with these?

Just curious,

I tried that, but couldn't see anything in live view, I'll have to try again

I have to admit that:

1) I immediately thought on your pictures when I read the initial post.
2) I also find that (C)s particularly annoying/disturbing (basically beacause
they don't allow me to fully enjoy your images)
3) I have never found that someone else has used one of my images without

complained.

This is going to sound odd, but the last time I did long exposures at night, I
found that using the Live View was a great way to quickly get my little points

I got the 3-piece combo as a "buy it all, I'm not piecing it out" deal when I
got my Tamron 90mm f/2.5 lens. $120 for the lens, cables, 28-80 zoom, film
camera body, and a camera bag which is now my primary bag.

The price was right - I did some research on the cost of the Pentax parts and
it's phenomenally overpriced for what it is!

You're all far overestimating the role I'm playing in all this. 90

Yes, there is good and bad light at night. The time around full moon,
like tonight, is always good. Combine it with a few low hanging fluffy
clouds to give the sky more depth and you already have one half of a
good shot.

Far less wizardry involved than you all think.

So would I. :-)

Anyone at Pentax reading this...?

Though I'm currently quite happy with the K-5. Been spending whole
evenings finding out just how far one can push things in Lightroom
without producing any noticeable of noise. Incredible, absolutely
incredible...

As to your shot, I honestly don't see how I could have done any better,
especially since such simple nature shots are far more demanding than my
industry scenes which are quite spectacular just by their subjects.

I'm not sure, however what I can learn from them other than that I occasionally

Re: The right tool for the job

2010-11-20 Thread Larry Colen
Thanks all for your comments.

Ann, I did some pixel peeping on other photos in the set looking for evidence
of tripod shake. I think that one problem I'm having is accurately focusing
the 20/1.8 in the dark. I suspect that infinity is not exactly infinity. On my
cameras auto focus won't work in that light, and I didn't bring my laser
pointer.

Pointing directly at the moon it wouldn't have made a difference, but do
polarizers have the same effect at night on darkening the blue of the sky? Can
they be used to bring out the stars better?

Here's one where I used the burn in brush in lightroom to darken the sky:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/5193155990/

To do this right, I suspect I'd need to know a lot more photoshop.

And, for those that are interested some more shots from the set:

OT: what has kept me away these past few weeks

2010-11-20 Thread Ann Sanfedele
So after I returned from my trip back home to Chicago to attend the
funeral of my oldest friend and stay with her family a few days,
O shuffled off to Detroit and Toronto... I did post before that I got to
see Christine nd Paul S and Knarf - and I have to tell you all how

much they were a comfort ...

After I got home, there were a few um adventures..

Firstly, in addition to grieving, I lost my roomate to her boyfriend --
not surprisijng, but didnt think it would happen so fast - that actually
was known before I left for Chicago, but she didnt move out until Nov
1st... this was more than a financial shock because while she still
has the store across the street and we visited briefly every day , she
is now only working in the store itself two days a week... - and Id gotten
in the habit of briefly stopping by the store for a quick hello and
exchange of news in person that was always cheering... she has partnered
up with 3 other women and they alternate store duty.

This also meant there were household chores she helped with that I was
left to do on my own - and I attempted things I should not have done
alone... to wit... when I got Luka's wonderful photo I was eager to get
it up on the walls and was switching things around and reframing etc to
accomodate it... I was standing on the couch.bed in the livingroom -
lost my balance, and stopped my self from falling all the way to the
floor somehow by swiveling around and coming down hard on my right shin
on the wooden chair next to couch. a bit painful, though not quite as
debilitating as it might have been...

Then in one day (two weeks ago exactly, actually) I managed to have one
of those good news, bad news days...

Good news - the last box of things Barb's daughter sent me from Chicago
(my inheritance kind of) arrive in the morning so
I put on new sneakers and made the bedroom look beautiful with the new
comforter and perused bits of nostalgia

Bad news - Ifell down on the cement and bruised my ribs, right under
my left boob , on the side of my body that already has
lowered range of motion - I was relieved I didnt break anything and
continued to the store -- bad idea.. ice when home.. It
was the worst physical pain I've felt in years. and the rally annoying
thing was, I had to sleep on the couch in the livingroom as a result
because I couldnt climb up into my bed that was now looking so
spiffy I was finally able to manage it a couple of nights ago...

Good news... I won $50 on a scratch ticket! which is the amount Kate
would ahve paid me for a week.

Bad news _ I got the blood work from my doctor... Cholesterol went up,
etc... so now I'm struggling to be a good girl with
diet . a couple of other things looked a bit off so I'm trying not to
eat wicked things and will get tested again before the end of the year
so it is covered by this years deductable. And I got instructed to get
a blood pressure machine .

So that Saturday wasnt much fun... since then, I was in a funk for a
while.. still am, really, although I'm healed enough now

so that I can and have taken long walks .

Can't do any shooting... hurts to hold the camera up to my eye

On the other hand, I have a rent controlled apartment and a lot of nice
friends...

So now I'll try to return to my usual wise-cracking silly self for the
benefit of all... will someone start a nice pun thread?

Thanks, Boris. I'm figuring out my routine. All suggestions are helpful at this
point. I've been importing directly into LR from the camera, but I can see
advantages to copying from the camera to the disk before importing into LR.

E.g., the images on my camera are in subfolders by date in a folder for the
year. When importing directly from the camera into LR end up with a subfolder
for "2010" in the folder for "2010." Then I have to move the folders in the
subfolder to the folder, which I find awkward in LR. It would be easier to do
in Finder before importing the dated folders into LR.

Thanks, Christine. I'd watched this a couple months ago. Having worked with LR
for a while now I now see lots of things I'd like to incorporate into my
routine. I have difficulty remembering them once the video's over, but at least
I'm able to experiment a little more intelligently.

Between the video and the help file I figured out what to do what I wanted to
do. I went ahead and deleted the "invisible" folder from the Finder, then used
LR's Find Missing Folder command to establish a link to the folder I moved into
its place.

that name in the folder. While I can see the file in Finder, it
doesn't appear in the Lightroom file list. The files in the
"invisible" folder are duplicated in the folder I'm trying to move.

Can I just go into Finder and delete the "invisible" folder?

Eric, I know I am doing this the wrong way, but I've been doing it this
way ever since LR 1.0 and I find it mighty convenient. So here goes:

* I have a folder for each camera I own - \K10D for Galia's camera and
\K7 for mine.

* When I import my or Galia's shoot, I first copy the files off the card
to either of these folders and rename the files/folders as I like.

* Then I open LR and right click on the respective folder and choose
"Synchronize Folder". This brings up the import dialog whereas the files
are already where I want them.

* Later on I assign key words, delete duds, and move the files as per my
storage organization.

I hope this helps you.

Re: off-camera flash

off camera would you advise using
a) pentax F (male / female hotshoe adaptor plus sync cable)
b) 3rd party cheapo cable solution
c) wireless, if so, which one?
thanks
Ecke

Ecke, I use the popup flash on my K20D to optically trigger my two
AF-540FGZ's. P-TTL works, but results can be iffy depending on lots of
factors. Triggering one flash is generally reliable, but triggering two
flashes at once rarely works and I generally just switch to full manual
on both flashes.

I've used optical remote triggering both indoors and outdoors and so far
have found no need to buy RF triggers.

I have also used one 540 on-camera as a master to trigger the 2nd 540 in
a softbox up to a dozen feet away outdoors. This has worked perfectly
for me, but it's pretty-much a tripod-only affair. Add up the weight of
the K20, a DA* 50-135 _and_ the 540 flash and you're talking a
wrist-breaker.

One trick I've developed to make the popup optical trigger work better
is to cover the popup with a white 35mm film canister that I've cut a
rectangular slot into. This spreads the trigger flash around so it
bounces off more surfaces and is reliably seen by the off-camera flashes.

BTW: I'm pretty sure you won't get P-TTL to work via any of the
available RF triggers. P-TTL works via Pentax sync cables and some (but
not all) 3rd-party sync cables, and via optical triggering. But none of
the RF triggers get the extra flash hot shoe signals so can't do it.
You'd have to switch your flashes to fully manual.

Good luck!

is finished. [I do it in Lightroom.]

I now have a folder dated 2010-11-18 that I want to put in my 2010 folder.
Lightroom won't let me. It says there's already a file with that name in
the folder. While I can see the file in Finder, it doesn't appear in the
Lightroom file list. The files in the "invisible" folder are duplicated in
the folder I'm trying to move.

Can I just go into Finder and delete the "invisible" folder?

Ann,

It's a tough image no matter what the technique.
I like what you did, but it seems to minimize the fog that I was in.
Keeping some of that effect is challenging.
Thanks for your efforts. I'll keep digging in.

First attempt: not enough tonal range

Method: (as above, plus) @ b&w conversion, Red +8, Contrast + 37

#1 looks like most of what I see out there -- it's the tones of what your eye
catches. It's useful, but there's something about learning to see in b&w that
is different, and I guess it would apply to *how* one treats a neg just the same as
to how one treats a digital image. The second accomplishes the goal better --
giving emphasis to the center object in terms of both tonality and contrast.

But there is still much more work to be done.

Where my thoughts ended up, while waiting for the 30 second exposures, plus the

do at night with a 645D, and that if Pentax were smart, they'd loan Ralf a 645D

For the Bay Area Folks, this is shot from the frontage road, just north of

Darren, I am not certain I grok your rant rightly... Are you ranting about the

All of the above. The law of copyright does not require one to RUIN
one's work in order to be afforded its protection. In addition, they
are giving up a potentially significant income from those who choose
to violate their copyright. (As Mark's posts have highlighted).

Anyway, can you please show an example or two (preferably from different
photogs) where copyright notice gets in a way of pleasant viewing...

I think we have all seen it, to various degrees. I doubt that is
necessary to shine the spotlight on any particular individual for
anyone to get the point of the post.

Darren

There are two examples I can think of ... one of them, sadly,
mine...(accidentally)
Because I have my defaults on smugmug set to watermark new additions, I
have occasionally have found a photo of mine that
was accidentally slapped with the default "PROOF" watermark that smugmug
offers instead of my visible but tiny one... I was
horrified when I saw it.. although it didn't have my name on it, it was
on my page. certainly made it hard to view .

The NY TIMES has an elaborate watermark stamped all over certain black
and white photos on line on repros they are selling.

Further, when someone wants to see a closeup of the artwork on the
cafepress site, a faint "SAMPLE" is printed all across the design
(often a photo, of course) .

I haven't read all the posts in this thread (just getting back , really,
from a recent hiatus) but I remember Mark mentioning once that he
protected his stuff by very slightly cropping the edges of all images he
put on the web so that should one of his ended up in a blatantly

commercial venue he could pursue it.

One thing I do though, is not put any of my photos on facebook - I
hardly go there anyway... except one or two.

I use a larger watermark on photos I've taken for things I'm selling on
ebay... because all my photos of things I'm selling are
the actual object up for sale and constitute a lot of annoying work so
"annsan scan" and the date appear on all, but not
obscuring the thing I'm selling.
