Alright, I'm going to add this comment here, having perused the rest of the thread. I find it a little amusing that people on this list keep referring to Pentax dosing something, (that includes me by the way). Pentax isn't going to do anything. Pentax no longer exists. There isn't even a Pentax division of Ricoh anymore. All we can hope is that Ricoh, designs builds and markets K mount cameras a little smarter than Pentax and then Hoya did, though history doesn't offer a lot of hope there. Ricoh seems to think that their own brand is the prestige photographic brand compared with Pentax and they've made a conscious effort to make Pentax a secondary brand. Unfortunately, I don't think this bodes all that well for the future, it seems like a bad marketing decision. I've seen a lot of those from Pentax over the years, I suppose that it's good to see that Ricoh has decided to carry on at least some of Pentax's traditions. What's more interesting though that I could pick up the GR from what was the official Pentax distributor, and I heard one of the reasons Ricoh bought Pentax was their distribution channels. If this is true, and we all know that Pentax distribution was not stellar, no wonder you never heard of Ricoh cameras. What is the best, iyo, modern Pentax brand Zoom
I mostly use the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 EX DC and the Pentax DA 18-135 f3.5- 5.6 WR. Both my lenses are excellent copies and tack sharp. Note: I get a combined seamless focal length from 10 to 135 mm (15 to 200 mm in APS-C term), covering my genre of Street, Travel, Architecture and Landscape Photography - 85% in of the time - 50/50 ratio. For that balance 15% low light situation shoots, I use the brutally sharp Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens. And for that odd sports, wildlife, naval or air show shoot, I use the Sigma 70-300 DL Macro I purchased for a song from KEH - an excellent sharp copy. Re: lunchtime comparisons
Interesting observations. I've been using the 28-105 PZ a bit these days for film shooting. It is not a bad lens at all but does get a bit soft around the edges at the wide end. The rotating front element can also be a bit of a pain if you are using a polarizer. DId you test it on an APS-C DSLR? I've been thinking about a replacement / upgrade but have not yet found anything that I'm convinced will be better, especially for film. I might hold out for a new release - I assume that when Ricoh issues a full frame DSLR they will also issue a complete new lineup of FF glass optimized for it... :-) Mark On 9/18/2013 1:09 PM, CollinB wrote: I'll put up results when I have time to edit the images for something practical. The lenses compared were (1) FA28-105 (pz) (2) 18-55WF (3) K50/1.4 (4) 70/2.4LTD (5) A50/1.7. First off, at 50mm, I was surprised how well the 28-105 compared to 2,3, 5. The full frame was well-rendered. The A50/1.7's cool cast coatings made for a bit more contrast. Sharpness was not a lot different across the range. But that's at the center of the range of the 28-105 -- which ought to be expected. At 70mm it is clearly inferior to the 70. But it was still quite good. At 35mm the image rendering was good but there was a lot of color fringing. Though the FA35/2 also showed some (this was from white flowers in bright sunshine), it we a fraction of what the 28-105 produced. While the 18-55 is very good it isn't quite long enough for my work. 28-105 will allow me to shoot in the lens' strong area of 40mm-80mm for best results. Recommendation: The FA28-105 (pz) is a very good lens. At the selling price of around $80 on eBay I can highly recommend it in terms bang-for-buck. And if/when FF comes you'll be happy you've got it. ;-) Would I use it on a pro shoot? Yes. And at the price having a backup copy is not out of the question. Also, for the dancers I've been shooting the 105mm reach works well. I need to go out to about 70mm or there about and this will make the shoots go better. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: You didn't hear it from me...
Ricoh used to make a line of second string K mount SLRs, prior to that they made a line of second string m42 mount SLRs, and apparently they marketed a Nikon mount SLR, made by Mamiym. They put some pretty nice technology into them, often the K mount bodies seemed to have somewhat better tech and more features than Pentax, and they were pretty nice cameras, but there was always something off about their ergonomics. Back when Pentax still had a presence in most Cameras stores, (not that long ago actually), one of the best local camera stores in the area went out of business, (they had one of my LXen in for repair, and I was worried about getting it back, I did eventually), at their going out of business sale they had a used Ricoh, I forget the model number, it resembled a Pentax A3 but included a ME Super style button system for setting manual shutter speeds IIRC. This particular camera seemed to be pristine condition and the price was certainly right, I was seriously considering buying it as a body to carry where I didn't want to risk a LX or MX, when one of the buttons simply fell off. The salesman who I knew, (it wasn't a paid liquidator running the sale), said, That seems to happen a lot, it just snaps back on. I decided to take a pass. Ricoh abandoned the SLR market sometime in the 90's. I don't remember when, exactly. I don't remember any big announcement, such as when Yashica stopped making cameras, Ricoh just sort of stopped, making SLRs. On 9/21/2013 7:40 AM, Stan Halpin wrote: On Sep 21, 2013, at 2:42 AM, P.J. Re: You didn't hear it from me...
I'm not saying the sky is falling. I'm just being realistic. Ricoh doesn't seem to be any better at marketing than Pentax was. More importantly they don;t actually seem to have any allegiance to high end Cameras as a product. For Pentax cameras and lenses were the heart and soul of the company, even though it wasn't the primary profit center. It defined what Pentax was. Ricoh simply stopped making SLRs one day, for them it was no biggie. That worries me a bit. You bring up the example of GM and Cadillac, I think a better model is GM and SAAB. SAAB made a car with some unique technologies, a very quirky body style, and owned a couple of factories, and a design house, that designed SAABs. SAABs were something of an acquired taste, but they were relatively unique. GM bought SAAB, integrated them into their European operations so completely that SAAB simply ceased to exist. The unique product became just another high end Opel. GM decided to sell off SAAB after failing to make the mark profitable, but all the new buyer got was a couple of factories that were now tooled to make high end Opels and a name. Re: Anyone have the Pentax X-5? or Q7?
I don't own one but I did research a while ago, for pretty much the reasons you've got. The bottom line appears that the Pentax X-5 is really just another bridge camera pretty much like all other bridge cameras. It's a small sensor, though quality is supposed to pretty good up to ISO 400. When it was first released the zoom range on the lens was pretty special and it had sensor based anti shake, but since then there are a number of cameras in that class with amazing zoom ranges and anti shake systems either sensor based or optical. About the only thing it's got going for it is it looks a little like a small K-5, and the only thing it's got over the Q is it has an eye level EVF. Marnie, unless you absolutely have to have a Pentax, I'd heartily recommend you look at the Nikon Coolpix P7100, a really great little package that has most of the features of a mid to low level DSLR with a lens that goes to an effective 200mm. No interest in X-5 myself. My walkabout camera is an Olympus E-PL1 that I picked up body only used for $95. A new Olympus 15mm f/8 body-cap lens was $50, and I already had the Ricoh GV-2 finder for the Ricoh GXR with A12 28mm camera unit. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3748/9859745064_0ae3102f26_o.jpg The whole deal weighs 14 oz as you see it there, and is big enough to hold steadily. The lens is a fixed aperture 15mm f/8 triplet. It focuses from infinity to .3m at the close limit with a little lever, is click-stopped at the hyper-focal distance for snap-shooting. When you slide the lever to the red mark, it's covered and protected. Light, handy, in body image stabilization ... the body takes an EVF if you want to as well, and the lens mount is completely compatible with the entire range of Micro-FourThirds lenses and other accessories. Image quality is not bad for a cheap triplet lens ... http://www.flickr.com/photos/gdgphoto/9859734955/lightbox Of course, if I want more quality, similar size and a wee bit more weight, an Olympus 17mm f/2.8 lens and a 35mm optical viewfinder does an even better job on the same body. Re: Anyone have the Pentax X-5?
Yes, I am sure the one I had was crap. The concept is good and with sensor technology what it is these days it should have been a winner. But it was very bad! I shot hundreds of pics with it and only one was somewhat OK. The electronic vf was So BAD. Totally a toy. The rear screen was ok, but then you look at just about anything else out there and it was much better. Just not worth the money. Re: You didn't hear it from me...
Quoting P.J. Alling webstertwenty...@gmail.com: Ricoh used to make a line of second string K mount SLRs, prior to that they made a line of second string m42 mount SLRs, and apparently they marketed a Nikon mount SLR, made by Mamiym. I had a Ricoh XR-2 in the 1970s/80s. It may have been a second-string brand but it was an excellent camera - functionally equivalent to the ME Super in a slightly larger body and without the push buttons. Sadly, it was stolen in the mid 80s but, on the positive side, the theft brought me back to Pentax :-) I think Ricoh decided not to get involved in the SLR autofocus race. They continued to make a few manual focus SLRs until the mid 90s before pulling the plug. -- Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

PESO -- Coming and Going; A Diptych
This pair of photos really needs THE STORY for explanation. As I stated in my post accompanying the PESO -- Charge, I was present at a Polo match that was being held for charity. A group I'm associated with was selling BBQ sandwiches with all proceeds being donated to the same charity, I was supposed to be there to ostensibly, to get some shots of the match and of our crew for publicity purposes. Well Coming is a photo of our first customer, (I was going to say satisfied customer, but she really doesn't look to happy), though she assured me that she was. Well now the story becomes kind of personal. One of my cohorts saw me take the photo and asked to see it. So I showed the image on the back screen of the K20D. Before I could even protest, he exclaimed that's really good and went over to the subject of the picture and told her how great it was... Next thing I know she's at my elbow and wants to see, and based on what you can see on the rear screen she's very pleased, thought I don't know how she'd feel about the larger version I've posted here, and for the next hour she clung to me like a Remora on a Shark. I learned quite a bit about her in our conversion except for her name, I never did get that. Finally without a word of good buy she simply decided to walk away, which is the subject of Going... So there you have it. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20coming%26goingdiptych.html Equipment: Coming: Pentax K20D w/smc Pentax F 70-210mm f4.0~5.6 Going: Pentax K20D w/smc Pentax A*300mm f4;0 smc Pentax F 1.7x AF Adapter. When they work these are just wonderful lenses. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20nobull.html Equipment: Pentax K20D w/smc Pentax FA 28-70mm f4.0 As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored. -- A newspaper is a device for making the ignorant more ignorant, and the crazy, crazier. - H.L.Mencken -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Failure Notices
Lately I've been getting Failure Notices on some of my PDML responses. Anyone else? Hasn't happened in the past. When this happens, I've been simply forwarding them from my Sent folder and they go. Re: Anyone have the Pentax X-5?
I mentioned Disneyland in particular. That is not a place you want a heavy camera, going on rides, et. all. For the Southwest, for sure, I'd want a DSLR or something good. HTH, Have a Nice Day! Marnie aka Doe ;-) I think one of the Fujifilm Fine Pixs will work great as a little travel camera. Decision made. In a message dated 9/21/2013 3:29:01 P.M. When I go somewhere interesting I want to take my best camera. I agree - especially if I'm going some place that I'm unlikely to return to. Carting my K-5, backup K200D and a few lenses around the USA became tedious but I don't regret it. -- Cheers Brian -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
