I've got to clarify - it didn't offend my sensibilities, it's just that in
a shared-office environment I have to be much more circumspect about what I
splash across the big displays. Something about wanting to keep my job and
all... :-)

Re: Disgustingly large GESO

That's it. I'll wager the lines line up with his sensor and that the image
as we see it is rotated somewhat from the original capture. But what would
cause those lines, I have no idea. My 2MP Olympus 2040Z would do that with
extended exposures (over 2 seconds) but that was a million years ago,
photographically.

Politically, it looks like you spent Saturday in Atlanta the same way I did
in St. Paul. Photo-wise, I would say it reminds me a lot of my days with
Pentax. Missed focus everywhere... :-(

There are some fun ones there, but a crap-ton are spoiled by motion blur or
focus not being anywhere near the subject of the image.

Yeah, just yesterday I bounced it off of the CFO (as I call her):

"I know we can afford this, but I just wanted to make sure it won't cause
any issues. Found a good deal... etc etc etc"

Her reply: "If it's something you'll use, go ahead".

It keeps things happy around the house here if one stays on the up-and-up.

Thanks, PJ - that's what I'll have to do. I'd call the lens condition
"Good" (because of the small nick on the front element). Wish me luck -

Holy cow. Just got back from the local photo shoppe. I was expecting a
low quote for the K5 because the bottom is all scuffed up. I was NOT
expecting a lowball on the 16-50. They offered $180 for the body and $100
for the lens - due to the "low resale value of Pentax these days" and a

I do have a couple of adapters - still working out which lenses work well
with the OM-D and which do not. I'm jealous of that 85mm f1.4!

My biggest problem with adapting the old K and A lenses is that my eyes are
starting to SUCK - I'll dial the focus in, think I've got it, hit the
shutter... and later I'll see that I was MILES from being in focus. Even
using the focus peaking. Old man... (sigh)

2017-01-06 Thread Charles Robinson
Yeah, I think I got it about a zillion years ago for something under $700.
The K5 has been "well loved" and would probably be listed by KEH as "fair"
or maybe even "BGN" (or even UGLY - don't know!). The 16-50 is as good as
it ever was, though, so I'll poke around a bit and see - perhaps starting
with the local shoppe is a good start, saving all the hassle of shipping
and whatnot.

In other news - I've missed this list! Perhaps I'll stick around a bit.

Howdy, folks! I used to be on this list and things got busy/weird and I

I came to the realization a while ago that since getting into the Olympus
OM-D line, I've not used my Pentax gear for ages - almost a couple of
years, actually.

It pains me to watch my K5 and lenses just rot in a bag - is there *any*
resale value on an original, "well-loved" K-5 body? And what's the current
state of opinion on the 16-50? (But if each are only a couple hundred,

Re: Equipment Changes

2015-06-19 Thread Charles Robinson

To that end, I have done the following:
My daughter has been given my fairly new K-5iis and DA* 16-50 and DA* 50-135
I have purchased an Olympus OM-D E-M10 with small kit lens and small
telezoom. Along with that I got an adapter for my remaining Pentax lenses of
which I think the M 50/1.4, Tamron 90/2.8 macro and A 70-210/4 will see some
 use.

I just got the same kit and so far I'm pretty darned happy with it. I'm
keeping the K5, though, at least until I can put the E-M10 through its paces in
some of the more-challenging conditions, like rock concerts.

I just sold my K7 body (formerly my backup to the K5) to a local camera store
for $100.

FS Friday: AF-540 FGZ flash - price reduced

2015-06-19 Thread Charles Robinson
Re-listing this here... perhaps I was asking for too much the first time around.

It's about 8 years old, I think? It's the original model, not the II.

I realized recently that I almost never shoot with flash, since getting the K5.
And when I *do* use flash, it's a party camera which the K5 with AF540
definitely is NOT.

I've never had any issues with it beyond design limitations. It comes with a
soft case and that little round base you'd use if you were standing this up as
a slave somewhere.

$150 + shipping - or, heck, what is it worth to you?

Paypal accepted, but I'm open to other methods of payment from fellow
Pentaxians here on the list.

I get a whopping 5Mbps upload speed with my DSL account, and Crashplan does a

would really be worthless as backup.

If you don't mind being part of the Google Collective Google Photos lets
you upload unlimited pretty good images. I pointed it to a folder full of
RAW files and it converts 'em to JPEG somewhere along the line.

It's not perfect, but I'm already backing up actual copies of my RAW files with:

 1. Time Machine
 2. Crashplan (no speed issues here)
 3. Occasional external harddrive that I connect, sync, and throw back into the
cabinet

So this is just one more place I can have my images parked. They aren't
full-quality so I don't really think of it as a backup though. For FULL
quality, Google lets you do that for a fee.

DA 50-200mm zoom - $50
F80-200mm zoom - $40
FA50 1:1.7 $150

Manual Focus:

OT: Does anyone here have the Olympus OM-D E-M10?

2015-05-15 Thread Charles Robinson
I'm considering it as a second body, something more point and shoot that is
small enough to carry around more regularly than the K5 with the 16-50. Kit is
going right now for about $500 which seems great but I was wondering what
people in Pentax-land think of the overall handling/image quality, etc.

These days the K5/16-50 combo, while beautiful and durable and capable, seems
kind of heavy to carry around all day when traveling casually. I was initially
looking at the Sony a6000 but this Olympus seems like a great combo of features
and price.

When I recovered the hook I placed it back in the latch and held it in place

the door closed better than the gaffers tape, over time.

I expect that repair is more expensive than simply buying a used copy with
out the problem you want fixed, for a camera that's more than one generation

I suspect that a little super glue might be judiciously applied at some point.
That'll be that, unless someone has a better suggestion.

I'm certainly not going to execute any solution which would require any
disassembly of anything more than just the hinge/door assembly!

Repair was $200+ on the weather sealed door.
Hope they have improved design since then.
Repair had to take apart a large part of the shell to fix it.
I should have just used black duc tape after the super glue failed.

I took the rubber seal off, which let me get to the retention clips that let
the plastic part slide all the way off of the metal part of the door.

Glued the plastic back together... that's when I noticed that part of the
plastic has a loop which expects the hinge pin to slide through it. That
won't do, if I'm leaving the hinge pin in place! A little dremel undid the
loop so I could slide the plastic back onto the metal part of the door until it
clicked into place onto the metal part of the door.

Then the rubber was re-applied to the metal. Done. Good enough for government
work, and I'm confident that the door is still weatherproof, as the only
weatherproof ANYTHING on the door is where the metal part of the door (with its
rubber seal) is pressed against the SD slot (and the magic shut the camera off
if the door's open button).

It sure looks like a major disassembly is required to get that hinge pin out -
certainly the top plate of the camera would have to come all of the way off --
which is NOT going to happen in the time that I own this camera!

K5 SD door broken

2015-05-12 Thread Charles Robinson
In the middle of my week-long trip to China a couple weeks ago, I pulled my
camera out of my pack and noticed that the battery door had been pulled open.
Annoying, but with the way it goes into and out of the Lowepro backpack, that
happens.

As I went to slide the door back into place, though, I noticed that a chunk of
it was missing. I found it later in my camera bag. Somehow the door had been
stressed while open, and a part of it snapped off.

Photo here of my half-assed field repair, if you want to see:

http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2015/IMG_7199.jpg

It's the right hand side of the door that's broken - there are no rubber
seals on that part of it, so I think that the camera MIGHT still be
weatherproof. The gaffer tape that's on it right now is how I made sure that:
 1. The door stayed in one piece for the rest of the trip
 2. The door stayed SHUT for the rest of the trip

Ideally I'd replace the door, but I don't know how involved or expen$ive a
process that will be. Has anyone had to deal with this kind of thing before?
How'd it go for you?

Other than that: I had a great time in China! I was looking for pictures to

Tokyo, Kyoto and Mt Fuji/Hakone Park. We then will spend a few days
in Beijing, including a day trip to The Great Wall, followed by three
 days in San Francisco.

I just spent a week in China. I brought:

 K5
 16-50
FA70-210 (which I almost never used)

That's it!

iPhone6 was a backup camera when I just couldn't be bothered to whip out the
SLR, and I used my GoPro clone a few times for fun shots. The Canon S95 was
tucked into a pocket of my bag and was used precisely 5 times. I could have
left it at home.

Be in the moment, enjoy the trip. I'd leave the monopod and most other lenses,
just go with the SLR and the 18-135 and call it done. But that's just me. Oh,
I see you have a GoPro. Sure, toss that in.

The lenses you suggest are all pretty close in zoom range. If you've got
18-135, what good is the DA50-200? 35mm? 40mm? 50mm? All that is covered
already. Unless you're doing some shots from very very far away, having more
zoom than the 18-135 is probably pretty unnecessary. I'd just shoot at 135mm
and then crop the heck out of it if you need to get closer.

I took my external flash with me the last two times I was in China for once in
a lifetime (gone 3 times now), and I used it about 4 times with the ist-DS,
once with the K10D, and for the K5 this time I left it at home.

Unless you're shooting professionally, where you HAVE TO GET THE SHOT, there's
no need to overpack/overthink it. That's just my opinion though, of course.

1-Hz clicking in the videos with certain converters/players, including

 Charles,

I see the point that Bruce is trying to make: experimenting with an
non-orthodox lens can occasionally give some interesting results.
While I am trying to do that myself with a fish-eye, I was also puzzled by
Lensbaby line when it was introduced.

At one of the photo-equipment shows in San Diego back in 2007, I came to the
stand with Lensbaby, and directly asked the lady presenting the first line of
Lensbaby lenses: So, what's the appeal? What can I do with these lenses? I
was genuinely interested. But she must have took that as an attack, and after
saying one sentence turned away to somebody else (rather rudely), and never
came back. I just shook by shoulders and went to something else that
 interested me.

I realize my question, too, may have sounded confrontative - not my intent! I
did see some good responses, people - thanks.

Holy CRAP. Under $500?

I've heard over and over that the K-5II has improved autofocus over the K5.
How much better, can anyone say, is the K3 over the K-5II for focus speed?

Because, honestly, better autofocus speed (and certainty) is the only thing I'm
craving on my K5.

So I'd either jump up to a K-5II or a K-3, whichever is most confident in AF,
if I were to upgrade at all. Anyone?

OT: screen calibrator for $70 or so?

2014-12-23 Thread Charles Robinson
Are there any decent calibrators for in the $70 dollar range? I think I have
my screens pretty well set up - any time I send a print job to CostCo and say
no corrections they come back looking like I'd like.

Lately, though, I've occasionally hooked up a second monitor to my laptop and
the appearance is WAY OFF. I'd love to be able to get those sorted and so far
no manipulation of the controls either on the laptop or the panel itself has
yielded acceptable results.

It would be nice to have a profile do the work for me - but since I so rarely
plug in the big monitor, I don't want to drop a lot of money for it would be
nice!

Platform: MacBook Pro, so OSX compatibility is a must.

Also: I've read of some stuff that only works on one computer. I've got two
Macs at home so it would be nice to run this on each of 'em. Thanks.

Re: OT Counterfeit external Hard Drive.

2014-10-21 Thread Charles Robinson
I second Zos' recommendation. If Sam's sold you something bogus, take the
issue up with them. Even if it's been about a year and maybe you can't find
the receipt.

I know CostCo typically extends warranties for devices purchased through them.
If Walmart and their ilk do the same, you might be able to swap that device out
(for a legit one) for the cost of a drive down there.

Here's something everyone should be aware of. I apparently bought a

closeout for the ridiculously low price of $37.00 each. So I jumped on the
deal, and was very happy until about a week ago one of them died.

I tried to get a warranty replacement, and I can't. I need the drive serial
number and the one printed on the case isn't an actual Seagate serial
 number.

Now here's the interesting part, as I said, I bought a pair of them, the one
that's still working /is/ not counterfeit. It has an actual Seagate serial
 number and model number.

Now to the naked eye, except for the bogus serial number and bogus model
number, the two cases appear to be identical, made of the same materials, in
the same factory to the same quality level. The only difference between the
two drives is the silkscreen label on the bottom of the drives, and except
serial number and part number, they look identical.

I saw a show last night at First Avenue, and the artists (band name:
Lucius if you're curious) wrapped up the program by performing their
encore in the middle of the audience, rather than up on stage.

I like the cozy look of the key lighting here:

For perspective, here's the whole room. I actually really like the colors

I take it that you've never tried photographing dancers at a social dance:

 can't use a flash.

Yes, what we can get out of sensors at ISOs above 6400 these days is really
amazing, but trust me, the need for fast glass for reasons other than shallow
 dof has not gone away.

I agree that for dim-light action photography, you just can't beat a fast lens.

I was surprised at my last series of concert photos, though, that I shot with
the F70-210. I forgot to set the program mode for SPEED and had left it at
MTF. Upon reviewing all of my (pretty decent-looking) images after the show, I
found that almost every shot was taken at f/8! That would have been absolutely
unimaginable in the film days.

I can't say enough good things about what you can do with pulling up
detail from the shadows in the K5.

Saturday night, the wife and I pedaled around Washington DC taking photos
of the monuments. One shot I did, I figured well, the contrast is too much
but I'll just expose for the brights and see what else I can get in post.

So, I spot-metered on the Washington monument, and took this 13-second
exposure at f/9 and ISO 100. As you can see, the image straight out of the
camera is not much to write home about:

 https://www.dropbox.com/s/cpbyheptagcykqj/K5__4359-original.jpg?dl=0

However, in LR I did only two (very-drastic) adjustments:

  1. I jammed the exposure slider all the way up (+5 stops)
  2. I pulled the highlights all the way down (-100)

The result is this. Not high art, but a good-enough documentation of what
I saw when I was there:

 https://www.dropbox.com/s/7djxrsj2pwcfl0e/K5__4359-processed.jpg?dl=0

There is some mottling up in the sky due to it being a low-quality JPEG
export (and there's also a speck of dust on my darned sensor!) but still -
 wow.

The Develop options are there to be used; it’s not cheating if you use them,
but ultimately you should be looking to render your photos in a way that
realizes the way you, the photographer, envisions the photo. Even if you
Auto Tone, you can scale back or up on the sliders to customize the Auto
Tone. Just start moving sliders around to see what you get. This is one way
 to learn about the adjustments.

Is it just me? Seems like any time I hit the auto tone button, the first
thing I have to do is back off the exposure by a stop or two. Auto tone
seriously blasts the levels way too high almost every time I use it. It seems
to get the relationships between highlights/shadows/etc pretty well, but the
overall exposure - no good.

That being said, I've used it a few times to get a photo to a starting point
when I'm not sure where to begin - but seriously, each time I click auto-tone I
have to jump for the exposure slider to bring things back to reality.

Is there some way that I can fine-tune what auto-tone does? Does it have
anything to do with the fact that I shoot RAW?

and Maryland's eastern shore. We have one wildlife refuge on the eastern

OK - so I am trying to travel light. The biggest impediment to that is
bringing backup bodies and lenses. When you travel - do you carry backup gear
or just trust to fate that everything will work?

Here's my travel kit - WAY less than what you would want, but it's what works
for me:

 K5 body
 16-50
 F70-210
 compact tripod (Ultrapod II)
AF540FGZ for the rare occasion when flash is needed. It usually never comes
out of the bag.
 Spare battery and charger

Canon S95 for I don't want a big camera with me occasions
 spare battery and charger

For the truly-important photography assignments (I'm the official photographer
for the Group Photo at the Twins Days festival I attend every year), I bring
the K7 as a backup body... but I've never had to use it.

This all fits nicely in the bottom of my Fastpack 250. Good for travel.
Camera is out of the way and don't have to think about it if I'm doing things
that are not photography-related.

I would pack differently if I was traveling specifically with photography (and
not general recreation/touring) in mind. To my mind, you are overpacking to
the extreme.

FWIW I will be taking a trip to DC in late September, and the above is my
entire kit that I'm bringing with me. Should be a good trip. If I owned a
12-24 or a 10-20 I'd take it with me as I'm sure there are going to be a number
of oh my, this isn't wide enough situations. I'll have to use the GoPro

Followup:

Sandisk asked for a bit more documentation (including the serial number printed

I got an apology that the 30MB/s card is no longer available and they will be
replacing it with a 45MB/s card (more than the K5 can shove at it, but hey).

So I've printed out the UPS label, boxed up the old card, and shipped it off to
SanDisk. They made it clear we will not ship warranty replacement cards
without return of the original product so I expect within a week or two my bum
card will be replaced with a shiny new one.

That went about as simply as one could hope for!

appeared to format in the K20D but then failed when I attempted a test photo

Both cards were bought at the same time, and neither had given me any trouble

Turning the power on, there is about a 3-second pause (no lower-right access

OT: Sandisk Extreme failure and it gets HOT

2014-08-06 Thread Charles Robinson
I took my card out last night to load some images, and left it on the desk
overnight.

This morning I found the card on the (carpeted) office floor. I picked it up,
popped it back into the K5 and turned the camera on so I could format it.

Turning the power on, there is about a 3-second pause (no lower-right access
light as is normal upon power-up) and then a card error message.

I turned the camera off, and upon removing the card, I noticed that it was VERY
WARM. Repeating the cycle yields the same results.

There are no external signs of damage - but I guess it's remotely possible that
my office chair rode over it on the carpeted floor.

Has anyone else ever seen a failure like this? How is Sandisk to deal with in
terms of checking out warranty coverage? I may or may not have the packaging
and receipt from 2+ years ago when I bought it...

PESO (non-Pentax): Selfie x2

2014-08-06 Thread Charles Robinson
I spend the last 5 days in Twinsburg, Ohio for my annual Twins Days venture
with my twin brother.

The K5 performed flawlessly for days beside (and almost IN) the swimming pool,
as well as an entire day outside in the rain.

For all that I put it through, my favorite photo from the weekend was not taken
with the K5, but with a little cheap Nabi Square HD action camera.

My brother and I ran into Don and Dave Wolf, who recently had a brief stint on
a reality program: Big Rig Bounty Hunters. During their time on the program
they became intimately familiar with the performance and capabilities of the
GoPro Hero 3 so they bought one to take photos of themselves with other twins
at the festival.

I didn't know this, but I was doing the same thing with my $49 W00T-special
camera.

So we bumped into each other, got close, and Dave and I held our cameras up
together to get the shot.

Dave and Don are looking at my camera... Me and my brother are looking at their
camera.

I dunno - *I* was amused, anyways.

backpack for stuff as well as cameras - Lowepro Fastpack, anyone?

2014-07-22 Thread Charles Robinson
I'm going to be taking a trip with the wife to Washington, DC in late
September.

I anticipate that it will be many days of walking and biking around, and I'm
thinking I might want something more comfortable/convenient than a standard
camera bag -- not only because they have just the one strap so they're always
hanging off of a shoulder (or over your neck), but also think it might be
convenient to be able to carry a windbreaker, or water bottle, or other
sundries with me.

I don't picture carrying a LOT of camera gear with me - but I do anticipate
wanting at least one alternate/telephoto lens for the K5 (16-50 is my daily
lens) with me, as well as the PS and other stuff. NOT a laptop, not a lot of
flash gear, not a tripod.

Searching around Amazon, I've come across the Lowepro Fastpack 200 (not the
newer 250) and it seems like just the ticket. A bit of camera gear in the
bottom section, and regular stuff up top.

It looks like access to the innards of the bag is relatively straightforward
when you need to root around for extra gear (most backpacks make you take them
off and lay them carefully on the ground before opening them up), and I like
the quick access for pulling out the camera/lens combo if you've been walking
around with the camera stowed.

Has anyone here used these, or anything similar to them? Good? Bad?
Suggestions?

Your mistake is 'trying to open the file'

The Mac is unpacking/opening the .BIN file and showing you the .cpgz file that

Instead of double-clicking on your downloaded BIN file, navigate in Finder to
your downloads folder, find the .bin file, and drag it onto your SD card.

My wager is you are not seeing anything on the camera end because the proper

When I was done scanning the card and dumping to the harddrive, I had a couple

OT: Recovering Olympus OM-D RAW files from corrupt card

2014-06-19 Thread Charles Robinson
A friend of mine has run into an issue where he plugged in his write-protected
SDXC card to a card reader (on his iPad) and it glitched out.

He has no idea how that happened. He always specifically puts the
write-protect on before dumping a card, just to be safe

He is able to use some 'recovery' utilities to pull some not-very-swell JPEGS
off of the card (not sure if he was shooting some JPG+RAW modes... maybe?) but
so far nobody and nothing has been able to allow him to recover any semblance
of the RAW files ( *.ORF ) that are on there.

Does anyone have experience with any sort of recovery utility (he's not really
concerned with the cost at this point) that could analyze the card contents and
make any sense of the RAW files that are lost on there somewhere?

Gee, I said to myself halfway through the first movement, this
sounds crappy. I tried all of the equalization settings, and found
flat was the best, but it still sounded crappy.

Were my headphones giving out? I pulled out my MBP and played the same
selection via iTunes--it sounded fantastic. It's the iPhone, not the
 headphones.

 So my questions are:

 1. Is the problem that the music player on the iPhone is crap? Is
 there a better one?

 2. Is the problem that the music files are compressed almost beyond
recognition getting transferred from the MBP to the iPhone? Is there
 any way to circumvent that?

Files transferred from iTunes to your phone aren't (or shouldn't be)
recompressed. But check your settings!

With your phone connected to iTunes, click on the phone in the left sidebar so
you get the summary (phone, backups, options) in the big window on the right.

In the lowest options box, look for the checkbox titled: Convert higher bit
rate songs to xxx AAC.

If that's checked... UN-check it. Now the music sent to your phone will just
be a COPY of the file from your MBP, not a re-rip of same.

I find that the music output on my iPhone5 sounds just great to my 48-year-old
ears.

have you tried different methods of output - ie, using a dock to a stereo or

a line output which would be going through your DAC but not your amplifier...
you could get a clue where the problem lies.

How about when you handle phone calls using that headphone jack? How do those
sound? You might have something gumming up your headphone jack physically, or
there might be a problem with the amplifier.

I know that in the past I've gotten some really REALLY bad sound when a
headphone is not FULLY inserted into the jack - you get something that is
mostly monophonic with the L+R signals added up out of phase with each other
(or something like that). Can really sound like crap. Make sure (compressed
air? toothpick?) that there isn't something keeping your headphone plug from
going all the way in.
