Re: Henrys taking lens orders

I found that it depends who you are dealing with at Henry's. When I
wanted to buy my K10D, they would only take $20 off ($900 at the
time), while another sales person took $60 off my 21ltd.

(I bought the K10D elsewhere).

I rarely pay sticker price at Henry's (I usually shop at the Outlet as
well, so I'm already saving over the main store)

I have tried to dicker with them in the past without success, but
then I deal with the two stores in London which are probably more
consumer oriented. That, and I only make it down that way a few times
per year so they do not know me. I do better with Stan C. Reade, whom
I have done business with for 30-odd years. Even though I am in there
no more frequently than Henrys, they know me and I can usually get a
 discount.

Re: Work flow with different cameras

2008-01-23 Thread Dave Kennedy
I'm changing my management organization now, and removing the
camera-specific hierarchy.

My plan is :
Directory structure:
ImageLibrary/mmdd-tag/

Image filenames are renamed to:
MMDD-HHMM-origname.

I'd use the database tool to determine any camera differences.

Like Bob, I'm also planning to use a networked computer for backup.

Thats what i'm finding now. Abit unorganized and dificult to tell or

Sounds like a main directory and then set up like Cotty or Godfrey,
with code for the camera maybe. I don't use LR or Elements to
download, i drag and drop from the card reader to the folder directly.
That might be easier to follow for back ups. Its time to remove photos
 from the PC and ibook.

Purpose? To help inform my suspicions...

1/ How many DSLRs do you currently own?

Two

2/ How many have you owned in the past?

Two

3/ How many years ago did you buy (not just use) your first DSLR?

2.75 years

4/ What's the longest length of time you've owned a single DSLR camera?

2.5 year

5/ When you purchased your first DSLR, did it live up to expectations?

Exceeded.

6/ How long have you owned you current DSLR (if more than one, the latest) ?

3 months

7/ Has your latest DSLR lived up to expectations ?

Not yet. K10D - needed to send back for Backfocus, non-level sensor.
Still waiting. Therefore, it hasen't had a chance to live up to my
expectations.

8/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you buy it?

No. I only buy if it has functions I need (and I don't forsee that,
for the time being).

9/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you consider your current or latest model
 'obsolete' ?

No.

10/ Do you consider your first DSLR (whether still owned or not) 'obsolete'?

No.

11/ Have you ever had sex with a bicycle? (You don't have to answer
this. In fact, better if you don't).

I back down the overall exposure until the red channel is within bounds.

Don't you then loose all non-red detail? No they become somewhat under
 exposed.
In my cardinal images, It didn't take much correction to prevent red channel
blow out, but yes doing this will potentially underexpose non red detail
which you should be able to recover in post processing, whereas blown out
red detail is gone if you don't bring it within bounds.

Mike, there is usually an option to erase each title somewhere in

Re: Birding pictures in your back yard.

2007-05-25 Thread Dave Kennedy
Speaking of squirrels... Our dog has great fun chasing the squirrels.
He's normally in the house, but when we see them at the feeder, a
whisper to the dog, and he's ready at the door. Open it a crack and
he's bolted after the squirrel. The squirrel usually makes it up the
nearest tree and chatters away at him.

On occasion, he's at the feeder before the squirrel sees anything and
then it's a really interesting dance between the 2.

most amusing. :)

I've been thinking about setting up a place for photographing the
birds for a while, I don't like bird feeder shots. My wife likes the
feeder nice close to the house, but that's not conducive to getting
the shots I want.

Re: Poll - Your Backup Copies?

2007-02-21 Thread Dave Kennedy
My process:

1) When I move from SD to harddrive, everything is also copied to a CD-R.
2) Raw files are processed and moved to a directory For Second
Backup, Jpegs are copied to My Pictures
3) When the For Second Backup reaches approx 4G, it's copied to a
DVD-R, and removed from the harddrive.
4) I use the Photoshop Elements backup utility to recommend the Jpeg
backups. I always do a full backup.

The Raw DVDs are kept in my detached garage (about 30ft from the house).

Therefore, I have Raw files on CD DVD.
JPEGS on multiple backup DVDs.

So I was checking Canadian online shops for price of DA primes (70,

In fact if I've been shooting RAW I fire up Elements to build a set of

OT because I didn't use a Pentax for the pics, but some of you might
have already seen my handiwork without knowing it.
The 2007 Dogs in Canada Annual features 12 of my photos and one of
them is actually of me :-) (besides my photo of myself and Tyra in the
 contributor's section)
Besides going to all the members of the CKC, the annual is also
available in bookstores such as Chapters - it might even be available
in the US, I'm not sure. Anyway, if you spot it in the bookstore just
 take a peek :-)

there are some folks here who were here when I arrived and who are still
here. Bill Robb, Steady Stenquist, Stan Halpin, Rob Studdert, and Steve

Not in my hands yet, but it will be fun to try out the Pentax glass I have
when it arrives. I decided I could wait for SR until later when I will
 probably
 get the K10D.

More important to me now than SR is seeing if I can get as good results (or
almost as good) with the DS and some older Pentax glass as I have gotten with
my 300D and expensive Canon glass. This is not a minor point as it will take
big bucks when the new Pentax lenses come out to duplicate the Canon kit I
 have
now. If I switch back completely, I can't outlay that much right away. It will
 definitely be incremental. :-)

 Thanks for everyone's input.

Cough. I guess I am back in the Pentax fold. Part way anyway. 1/2 Lightside,
1/2 Darkside. Like that Star Trek episode. Wonder if I will be as conflicted

Mesa Verde NP by Tom Reese

Tom's photos usually strike a chord with me, but this one failed to
pluck even a single string, I'm afraid. I'd say it probably works as
an illustration photo of the place, though. It makes me want to visit
 the place some time.

Seen Better Days by Bill Burton

Old cars are great subjects for abandoned. This shot absolutely
conveys how the car is about to literally fall apart, but I think the
composition could have been made stronger if the shot was taken closer
to the car, to avoid the branches intruding on the pic from the left.
There also seems to be something very odd about the colour balance in
this shot. Too much green/cyan, maybe?

When I was a kid.. by Sandy Hermann

The story around it makes the picture grow, but I think some of the
elements distract. The unsharp object in the lower left corner, and
the unsharp twig in the right hand corner. The long twig meandering
from the top is a nice element, I think, and it would have been even
better if it didn't cross the valve.

With the almost square format, the crop is actively chosen for the
presentation, and to me it seems like a good choice because it brings
the object so close and sort of intimate. Not easy to be intimate with
 an old cart wheel...

 Marble by Robert Gonzalez

This device looks like it has lost more than it's marbles (ok, ok,
just can't resist...). Parked by the roadside, some nondescript and
undefinable objects in the background and the wheels coming off; it
 looks seriously abandoned.

Four fungi by Jan van Wijk

Too bad the fourth got turned to mush...:-)
It's a lovely pic of the three fungi remaining. Special price for most
stretched interpretation of the theme. :-)

 Forerunner by Ann Sanfedele

 Running ahead into abanonment... lol...
This pic certainly hit home with me.

 Frosty Roof by Dave Kennedy

Great detail, sharpness in the right place...

Like it. Not for any particular reason at all, I just like it.

Hwy 395 revisited by Brendan MacRae

This one is also very well done. Wouldn't change a thing.

Villa Maiuri - Interior by Gianfranco Irlanda

There's something special about this one. It's so anti every rule of
composition with the huge door and wall in the middle, and the two
exits on either side. Still it works. Very intriguing. My favourite
 this month.

What are the areas where improvement will be noticeable? Sharpness, colour,

As far as the rear cap I use the non bayonet type caps (like the ones)

makes the total package too long for my bag/slot design and means
hunting for the right lens as part of a lens pair, can mean even more
bits to juggle. I tried it with my Leica gear some years ago but
 didn't like it very much.

The purpose for the back to back rear caps is to enable changing the
lens more quickly and reducing the amount of bits juggling you have
to do in the operation of pull out a lens - pull the rear cap - put
a cap on the lens you just took off the camera. With back to back
rear caps, you twist a lens onto the one you just pulled from the
bag, then hold the cap and twist the other right off, barely moving
your hands. The lens that goes in the bag has a cap on the rear in
the end, with a siamesed rear cap opening unused.

Because I will not depend on the caps to stick together with the
weight of two lenses bearing on the cement joint, almost any cement
will do (epoxy, rubber cement, cyanoacrilate ...). Their join could
always be reinforced with a glued in reinforcing ring too.

Another thing I'm going to do is buy six rear caps and glue them
together into pair. That will make it easier when doing a quick
change to transfer the cap from one lens to the next ... just connect
the lens you just took off to the one you just pulled out, then twist
the one going to the camera off and drop the other back into the bag.

Powell bought his first Pentax in the early '60s and subsequently studied
photography in California and then as a member of the Royal Canadian Air
Force. He quit the RCAF to go to the University of British Colombia and
worked as a wedding photographer to make money on the side as well as being
a staff photographer for the student paper.

He taught me the basics of photography and I ended up with his Pentax S1a
back in the '70s. I have since always had at least one Pentax, except for a
short period a couple of years ago when I thought mistakenly that a digital
could do it all and sold my K1000. When I realised the digital camera I
could afford couldn't do all I wanted, Powell sent me off to eBay to get a
decent Pentax film camera, and encouraged me in my subsequent Pentax
 collecting fever.

He maintained his interest in photography throughout his life even though he
seldom earned his living directly from it. I noticed his last contributions
to the PDML were at the beginning of October, a couple of days before his
 health failed.

He was a wonderfully jack of all trades but with the twist of being
master of several. The explanation of how he fixed his Pentax F 70-210

Powell worked at the Nanaimo BC art gallery for the last 18 years, a tribute

college course before, and my mother spent here career as a college
professor, so I'm well aware of the enormity of the job part of the
 deal. Lotsa work involved...

There's a whole lot of serendipity involved in my getting this job. I
picked up the Sunday (July 16) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette classified ads
on Monday morning after a busy Sunday. I noticed this teaching
position at Youngstown State University (in Ohio) that looked
tailor-made for me so I made a note to apply for it. It hadn't been in
the previous week's paper so I didn't think there would be any urgency
about it, even though something in the back of my mind thought it was
late in the year for this kind of position to be advertised.

I didn't get around to preparing my application materials until
Tuesday afternoon, at which point I noticed that the application
deadline was Wednesday, July 19 - the next day! I continued scrambling
to get materials together and zapped off a quick email to them asking
if it was OK to apply via email or if they wanted hard copy (I
mentioned, while hoping not to sound too desperate, that I'd be
willing to drive up Wednesday if necessary). On Wednesday morning I
got a reply saying email would be fine (I was just getting ready to
get in my car to drive up there) so I sent of an email with a ton of
 attachments.

On Thursday morning I got a phone call asking if I could come up to
interview and give a brief demonstration lecture on Tuesday.

So I spent the weekend preparing my presentation and drove up Tuesday
morning. The woman who had led the search committee recognized me from
my web page head shot (thanks Cesar!) and I discovered that she:

Also lives in Pittsburgh and commutes to Youngstown
And lives less than two miles from me
Did the same master's program at Duquesne University that I did
And her husband teaches at Duquesne
And that she knows the guy with whom I taught the sound course at
 Duquesne last year

Anyway, my presentation wen *very* well on Tuesday and they called me
at 9:00 Wednesday morning and offered me the job!

Job officially starts on Aug 16 (classes begin Aug 28) but I'm going
to be up to my eyeballs in preparation until then. I suspect the
teaching workload with new (to me) classes will severely cut down my
PDML participation time from now on. Whether that's good or bad is
 another matter ;-)

Re: Managing all these RAW files with Photoshop Elements 4.0

2006-06-22 Thread Dave Kennedy
This is the way I'm managing Raw files. I typed it up for myself so I
would stick to it better.

Raw Workflow:

1. Import raw files to: ~/MyPictures/RawImport/yymmdd directory.
2. Process using RSE
3. Convert to jpeg into directory: /converted.
4. Move jpegs to /pictures/istd/yymmdd structure for import into Elements.
5. Rename raw file directory to 'archive_x-x'. x is the
image number.
6. Copy Directory to CD-R.
7. When the enough files accumulate, copy again to DVD. Store offsite.
8. Delete Raw files from Hard Drive.

This gives me CD-R and DVD backups of my Raw files and RSE conversion data.
It also keeps the Raw files out of Elements, making it easier to
manage (to me). Because I rarely change jpg filenames, I can easily
find the RAW original if needed.

Elements Workflow:

1. Apply Tag To be reviewed/Categorized to all new images
2 As images are categorized, remove this tag.
3. Perform jpg backups as per Elements 3 Reminder.

If I end up shooting jpeg for a specific reason, these files go
straight to the /pictures/istd/yymmdd Directory structure.

 Hi Bob,

I suspect there will be as many best practices as there are

Folder structure is the basic element of my solution. All the
RAW-files goes into one folder structure The names of the folders and
the organisation is down to personal taste, of course. I prefer a
 simple date-based setup like this:

 RawFiles
 year
 quarter
 date-keyword (example: 20060620-gardenShots)
 date-keyword
 quarter
 ...etc.
The quarter structure is a bit arbitrary. I chose to use it because
it fits well with my production volume and the change of seasons where
I live. It also works as a zeitgeber for my secondary backup cycle
 (DVD burning).

For developed TIFF files, I have a similar structure, but skip the
 date-keyword level.

I also have a third structure where I put all images to be published
on the web, but that's not in a state fit to describe to anyone...:-)

When all that is said, I must admit that I avoid using Photoshop for
organising files. Instead, I use ThumbsPlus v7, which is an archiving
software capable of creating previews of raw files and keeping them in
a database for swift access. In addition, I use a dedicated raw file
converter which has a reasonable file browser as well.

If you don't wish to invest in archival software, maybe the freeware
viewer suggested by Mark Roberts a week ago could be something:

So now that you have me shooting RAW files, how do I manage them in
  PS
  Elements 4.0?

That is, I have 3,600-4,000 photos in Elements 4.0 now, mainly
  jepg's.
Some RAW files are also mixed in from this month (GFM and later).
They are a pain to open for editing because they each want to be
  converted on opening.

So what do you all do? Convert them all in a batch and just save
  the
converted versions as high quality photoshop files? Do you put the
RAW originals away somewhere, out of Elements 4.0?

I really need to untangle the mess I am making by having the RAW
  file
and then 2 or 3 versions of the conversion jpeg in the catalogue.

What's the best way to do this? Sorry if I wasn't paying attention
  before :-(

  Regards, Bob S.

Raw images need help. Flat, Dark.

2006-05-12 Thread Dave Kennedy

Recently went our for a walk at a local Conservation Area, cool, dark,

- Shot everything in Raw.
- Back home, imported to PC,
- Raw to JPEG conversion via RSE primarily with the default settings.
- In Elements, added Name to corner,
- Exported to resize and reduce jpeg quality (to about 8)
- Uploaded them to the web

The pictures looked fine/ok on my pc at home during the Raw
Conversion, but now on my PC at work, they are dull, flat, dark, soft.

My home monitor is uncalibrated (as is my work monitor), but I'm still

Thanks for the comment Paul.

I really appreciate the breakdown of your workflow/thought process as
you go through the Raw Workflow. I use the histogram alot in camera,
especially to determine if there saturated highlight's but I've been
using the monitor view when tweaking for the Raw Conversion. This is
why I've been wondering if I have a monitor adjustment issue. I'll
keep a closer look at the histogram when I do these.

blacks can go deeper without going off the histogram. But that's why the
histogram is provided. It helps you see when too much is just too much. I'd
also turn up the exposure until I either achieved the overall brightess I
wanted or until the histogram indicated that highlights were being clipped. If
highlights started clipping before I achieved sufficient brightness, I would
brighten the midrange some more with the brightness slider. I would also look
at everything at 200% to see if any CA was evident. If I saw any color banding,
I would try to eliminate it with the CA adjustment. I would then set my output
size to 16 bit 144 megabyte, select prophoto colorspace and convert. (I make
all my files large for the masters.) I then might perform some a!

I'm not familiar with RSE. I use PSCS RAW converter, but I can say with
certainty that very few RAW images will look satisfactory at any given set of
default settings. Almost all require fine tuning. Yours are very close for
RAW,
and they err in the direction in which they should: subdued highlights. All
they
need is some adjustment during the conversion process. You can just tweak the
jpegs now if you wish, but working with your images during conversion is much
prefered as you will find that you can fine tune the range much better. If you
don't want to work on your conversions, shoot jpeg.

Just converting without adjusting does not make sense. You are not using the
potential of raw shooting.

At first I struggled a lot with this myself. (In fact, I still do, but my
skills have improved).

RSE has a neat feature that will get you going pretty fast. You can simply
use the Alt + E keys, and viola, RSE suggests adjustments based on some kind
of picture analysing. The suggestions are not perfect, but in many cases
they are ok. And in most cases it will give you a rough idea on what to do.
After a bit of fine tuning it usually ends up pretty good.

Off course, the best thing is to do it all by yourself, but why not get a
bit of help? It sure speeds things up.

Re: Wide Angle advice for *ist-DS

2006-04-03 Thread Dave Kennedy
I'd started writing an email similar to your original post several
times over the past few months, but never finished it. I'm in a
similar situation, although the lens lineup I have is a little
different. I don't have the 16-45, but the kit 18-55 instead, and I
have the FA100/2.8 Macro instead of the 135

Short-wise, I've pretty well decided to go to a 14/2.8. I was bouncing
alot between the 16-45 and the 14, but I've pretty well come to the
conclusion that the 16-45 would be too big for snaps, and the fact
that it doesn't give me a *whole lot* more width than the 18-55.
Probably the biggest issue was that it's taking me about 6-8 months to
save up for the lens, and the FL difference between the two isn't that
big. While I recognize that there is a quality difference between the
18-55 and the 16-45, a longer term plan to work toward primes tends to
make me lean toward the 14mm. I've never actually had anything wider
than 28mm (in 35mm) so this will be an interesting experiment. If I
really don't like it, I expect the resale value of the 14mm would be
pretty good.

 the roadmap?

A couple people have mentioned that I ought to just get my use out of
the 16-45. It has been a great lens for me, and I never feel that it's
producing inadequate results. I just happen to actually *enjoy*
shooting with non-zoom lenses more, for some reason. I've never been
able to quite put my finger on the reason. I think that by picking a
focal length and sticking with it for awhile helps me to see potential
shots in terms of that focal length before I bring the camera up to my
eye, and that helps me to achieve more meaningful composition.

By the way, my *least* used lens, since acquiring the *ist-DS is the
80-320. I almost sold it a couple times, but stopped myself when I saw
how cheap they go for on eBay; not even worth bothering to sell. So I
hang onto it for the one or two times a year where it proves to be the
 right choice of equipment.

I'll do business with them again.

You can't sell cameras if they aren't available to

That bodes ill, not well, as with less than 10% of

   Pentax
really can't afford to lose sales. If Pentax can
   see a camera is selling
well and the volume of that model in the supply

foresight dictates that they ramp up to keep the

I question why I don't see a single Pentax DSLR at

I don't think it's because they sold out.

Enablement. FA100 Macro from KEH.

2006-01-10 Thread Dave Kennedy
Financial Christmas gift from my Dad went into my Lens fund, and I
just received my FA100 Macro (EX+) from KEH.

Looks beautiful, but sadly my cameras are at home (and I'm at work),
so I can't test it. (Especially after seeing the thread about the
problem William had with the KEH lens).

Shipping went well (UPS into Canada). Ordered on Thursday, arrived
today. Passed thru customs, no tax.

I reshuffled my LWL (Lens Wish List) before christmas after my Kiron
105/2.8 Macro started rattling and giving some haloing around high
contrast areas. That, and the problems with the F70-210 I had in the
summer as caused me to re-evaluate the wish list..

LWL now stands at:
Wide angle 18mm
70-200/2.8
Something between the Wide Angle and the 70-200/2.8, possibly 16-45,
28/2.8 or 35/2, to replace the 28-70/4 in the event of failure.

Re: Enablement. FA100 Macro from KEH.

2006-01-10 Thread Dave Kennedy
Thanx Igor. Yes, it is the 2.8. I would have gone with the DFA, but
the cost advantage of the FA did it for me. (A DFA 100/2.8 Macro runs
about $800 CDN, I got the FA for half that).

Enjoy it when you get it! I hope the lack of inventory of the
DFA100/2.8Macro is a good sign indicating high demand. I know some of
the Canadian site here mark it as a hot item.

Which one did you get? I guess f/2.8. (or 3.5?)

I've been looking at the 100 macro f/2.8 FA's myself.
About a month ago there was one in a similar condition at jackscamera
 for $309, IIRC.
For myself, I practically decided to buy a D-FA version instead.
Smaller weight+size + shift focus (+ presumed benefits of D- antiglare
feature) of a D-FA overweighted (pun intended)
the better build quality + focusing range limiter + cheaper price
(used vs. new) of an FA.

I hope disappearance of the D-FA from Adorama and BH is temporary,
and just a result of the holiday rush.

Not with those you list, but I have certainly bargained with almost every

Is £50,000.00 your best price for this used lens cap?
We might be able to take a bit off.
 I'll give you 50p
 OK.

They're in the business of moving stock across the counter. As long as they
make a profit (or minimise a loss) they'll do a deal. If you've ever sold to
a dealer, you'll know how much mark-up they put on the stuff, so you can
generally work backwards to find their best price.

I've had reasonable success with the chain stores, although they are limited
in what freedom they have to bargain by group protocols. The local mom
pop store's original owner (the grandfather of the present staffers) is so
hard nosed that I have had almost no success at all. He comes across as
this avuncular figure that is doing you a real favour selling you something
whereas, in fact, he is carefully removing your eye teeth along with the
 contents of your wallet.

It's the only place in town that does secondhand gear now, though. Anyone
else noticed that there is virtually no secondhand stock in the shops any
 more?

Yup. When I went on holidays in 2004, I regularly used 2 bodies. Long

I'd like a 2nd DS to use along with the 1st - it cuts down the number of
times that I have to change lenses (which, depending on the situation, may
or may not be of significant help). And, if one did ever poop out on me
(perhaps even due to batteries or a full card), I'd have the other one
ready to go. (Yes, I know that batteries and memory cards can be changed,
but sometimes it'd be quicker to switch bodies and lenses than to swap
batteries or cards.) And, of course, this would also be true if the
failure was more serious than a full card or empty batteries.

Re: Which RAW converter?

Not really. It just automates the process. Creates a new directory
based on import date and time, and brings all the new images up in a
new window for cataloguing (or deletion).

If you move images around outside of PSE (i.e. in the windows
environment) after they've been catalogued, you may screw up PSE
cataloguing. I expect this is a problem with any image managment s/w.
