Hi All, sorry for not posting this yesterday. I blinked and missed Friday. I have here for sale: One Sigma 15-30 3.5-4.5 EX DG lens. It's been well used but not abused. Not by me. I bought this lens from former list member Richard Seaman in anticipation of the arrival of the Pentax Digital. The matte finish on the built-in tulip hood has worn away to smooth black on all the edges and also in some places on the barrel. Doesn't look as pretty as it could but the glass is still perfect. It comes with its soft case and all its paperwork. There is no front cap (I presume there was one at some time?) but it has a rear cap. $200 plus shipping One Tamron SP 17mm f3.5 adaptall2 lens. Like new in its box with hood and case. Also includes a PK adaptall2 mount $200 plus shipping Wendy Beard, Ottawa, Canada http://www.beard-redfern.com

If it was a CT-1 counter top unit that interfaces with an RA-2 digital printer, depending on what it is networked to, a file larger than 20mb would make it kaak (my machine), or as small as 8mb might make it refuse the file. Re: Gasp - a film question
Beware of mercury vapour! Does some pretty weird stuff. http://www.muddypawz.net/dfst3 I'd play safe and go for the 3200 BW. You may be disappointed with the colour shots if the lighting's like I had. Last time I was shooting in an arena (see above) I was only getting 1/350 at 2.8 so it would appear that it's pretty bright in the Palace. From: graywolf Of course if they won't even try to fix them or want to charge you reprint prices then run, don't walk someplace else. Anyone can make a mistake, it is only when it happens too often or they try to deny it is their mistake when you should worry. When I was fed up with the over-saturated prints from Blacks, I decided to try elsewhere. Started off with a photolab in the next mall Jiffy Photo. Took in two negs and asked for an 8x10 from each. One summer shot, one winter shot, both featuring the same bernese mountain dog. One print the dog was green, the other the snow was pink. I told them it wasn't acceptable. The assistant said if they did it again it would come out the same as the machine did it itself. Good Grief. I took my business elsewhere. Had good results from the camera shop formerly known as the Focus Centre. They had a kodak lab on site. Alas, no longer. Henry's shut it down when they took over. Sept PUG Comments
Seeing as we are discussing commenting on the PUG, I thought I'd show willing by throwing in a few comments about images in this month's PUG. My criteria for choosing which images received a critique was quite simple. Photographers whose first names begin with J Without further ado, here are my comments: Sunset1 by Janosch Heinz - (Takes a deep breath) Okay, but not a photo which makes me go Wow. Nice line of clouds and pretty sunset colours, but too much dark around. Perhaps some heavy cropping just to highlight the sky might have made this better. Gums by John Coyle - (another deep breath) Another photo which leaves me indifferent. I don't really get the cold winter afternoon feeling. The trees are a little too dark. I like the sparkle of light at the base of one of the trees though. Troublesome Creek, June 29 2003 by Jim Moniz - Nice creamy water photo. Remarkable lighting, the water looks almost fluorescent! Notre Dame from Upstream by Joseph Tainter - It might be a cliche, but I like it! Detail on the lower level not too blown out by the floodlights. Pretty good calculation of exposure time. Fireworks-3 by Jeffrey - I think Jeffrey's done this before! In Thought by Jonanthan A. Donald - Nice use of sepia tone. Great expression on the boy's face! If it were my son, I'd say he was contemplating where to lob the piece of rock in his hand... I don't like the bright patch in the top right of the shot and would try and do something to darken it up. Here endeth the js I have to comment on one more though Rhythm by Facit - A friend of mine has a postcard in his WC which this shot reminds me very much of, except the sheep are all going downhill. From discussion under Postcards from Colmars thread I need to learn who to knock up such pages with PhotoShop. I do mine manually sigh. Is it possible to include an add copyright text action to this automation? The FA* 24 200mm are easy to turn, the FA 50mm almost as easy. But my FA 35mm and F 100mm macro are a little bit harder to turn. Are these variations normal? I know it's a subjective issue this whole thing, but any help is appreciated. When I bought into AF a few years back I bought Minolta (600si). I didn't have any AF lenses and very few manual at the tim, so which manufacturer wasn't important. Although I did want to choose Pentax, I didn't like what was available in the shops at the time. No Aperture ring on the lens. No big deal. When the MZ-S came out, I bought that and sold my Minolta. No problem switching back to setting aperture on the lens. (Though I had umpteen years of using an MX before going AF) I found the current 28-105 Pentax-made lens difficult to turn. I solved the problem by buying myself a 24-90 and giving the 28-105 to hubby, who never usually takes it off A anyway. (snigger) Wendy Beard, Ottawa, Canada http://www.beard-redfern.com

Most people go through them - dog jumping, dog jumping, dog jumping, dog jumping, dog jumping, dog not jumping, dog jumping, dog jumping etc. Whereas I go through Roxy doing the gamble, Branson in that marvellous jumpers run, Oh, look that's Tanja just before she ran off course because I was there running my dog and so were a lot of my friends. The reason for the sameyness of the shots is because often there are only one or two good vantage points and Dave doesn't want to be running around like a blue a*sed fly trying to get different shots for the general public, he wants to concentrate on at least one good shot of each rider in the hope that each of those riders will buy a print! William Robb Hmm, this is a difficult challenge given the theme. There are a few which are immediately obvious as being digitally manipulated, even just by seeing the thumbnail. I would have to skip those as it's possible I would have no answer for the last part how you think you would have taken the picture, had you been holding the camera. First glance through the thumbnails, my eye rested on Vic MacBournie's submission. How did he get my dog in the photo? Glanced though again, spotted ERN's photo. Wanted to click on it just to see the beetle properly. (looked about the same age as my old one - about 1970's vintage) Next thumbnail to it was from Bernd Scheffler. I clicked on it. Why? It caught my eye - probably for the wrong reason. The shiny patch on the image made me want to look at it further. I liked the idea very much. It fitted the theme and was probably shot especially for the PUG. It almost worked. I liked the composition. All except the reflection on the glass of the watch. This is the distraction which drew my eye to the image in the first place! I'd have tried to light the shot differently to avoid, or diminish the reflection. I'd have tried to straighten up the watch in the foreground too as it's leaning slightly over to the left. I still think Bernd did well and applaud him for his efforts. He certainly put a lot more thought and effort into his submission than the person who just slapped their camera on the scanner and submitted it ;-) Wendy Wendy Beard, Ottawa, Canada http://www.beard-redfern.com

I did notice that no one has yet mentioned switching brands for Pentax AF gear. BR Me, I did. I switched from Minolta AF when the MZ-S came out. I have since sold my Minolta 600si and lenses and bought another MZ-S body (thanks, Andre!) Really and truly I didn't so much as switch to Pentax, but switch ~back~ as my manual stuff was a pair of MXes and an LX with various lenses. Tiny Cars and PUG
Rejoice Frank. The little urban car you seek is now being marketed in North America Saw one of the new minis in the car park at Canadian Tire today. Bigger than I remember. Told hubby he could buy me one for Christmas. He said yes, dear, so I guess that's sorted then! Once we got inside Canadian Tire however, he changed his mind and said he'd buy me a mini dremel grinder instead. Interestingly, at an outdoor classic car show in Ottawa earlier this year the department of transport had a Smart car on display. Now I doubt very much that that would be approved for the roads here! Ditto the mercedes A class. I mean it couldn't even pass a European Moose test. Not to mention the fact that any passengers in that hideously pretentious car would be throwing up at the first corner. You don't want to be driving one of those things in the Alps, trust me. Anyway, enough off topicedness from me for this evening. Wendy p.s. Not quite. My dog got her Advanced Agility title this evening. I had the LX with me, but didn't have the presence of mind to have anyone take a photo. p.p.s. I'll try and make some time to submit something for the next months PUG. Wendy Beard, Ottawa, Canada http://www.beard-redfern.com

Pat White It's just been playing on BBC Canada. Stunning ad (not). Shows the MZ-6 as well. Reminds me of the Visit the Taj Mahal for Fine Indian Cuisine, around the corner from this Cinema type ads that used to run before the main feature in Pearl Dean days of my youth. Advertising on a budget, I think it's called. Wouldn't win any prizes for snappy advertising, but sure beats the interminable ads for The Shirley Temple Video Collection and Bobby Vinton's Greatest Hits on two CDs or cassettes (rush orders available) Wendy Beard, Ottawa, Canada http://www.beard-redfern.com

I didn't expect them to measure up to a custom print but I didn't expect them to be trash either. I thought I'd get something usable from a commercial lab but they were awful. No contrast, colors were off, highlights were washed out. Just terrible. My experience too. I took a 67 velvia slide in to Blacks to get an enlargement made. I'd tried scanning the slide on my HP flatbed without much success (unmounted, I couldn't keep it flat enough). Terrible print. I've now taken it somewhere else to see if the results are any better. A good argument for buying a film scanner
I know I'm preaching to the converted here, but I thought I'd post the results from some scans I did today. http://www.beard-redfern.com/scantest/index.htm By the way, the scan of the print is pretty much true to life. That's the sort of quality I'm getting back from the photo lab. Why they can't get it right with equipment costing thousands of dollars and I can get results 10 times better with a film scanner costing $500CDN, I don't know. The three scans are unmanipulated, they are just as they came out of the scanner. Contrast, colour and sharpness haven't been altered. Now if only it wasn't so tedious scanning negatives.. Re: Only 5 more days until...........
Yep, I'll second that. That's precisely what I did on Sunday. Even though it was chuckin' it down, I decided that I was going to the Gatineau Park before all the leaves fell off the trees and my cameras were coming with me! The rain got heavier and I almost turned round but decided on a better course of action - lunch in the pub! Lunch over, rain abated, went off for a wander in the woods. Shot 2 whole rolls of film plus a bit more. Boy, did I feel better for doing that! Next stop, hope something suitable for the PUG came out of it and get it scanned and submitted! Shooting Auroras
Right, Question for all you out there who do any sort of sky/night time photography. Is there any rule of thumb for shooting Auroras. Open the shutter and count to 10 - 20? 30? Set the camera on auto and let it sit and expose for a few minutes? I suspect it's all just trial and error but I'd still like some hints. tia Wendy Wendy Beard Ottawa, Canada http://www.beard-redfern.com
