This is lovely. If you click through to the larger image, it is clear

Re: PESO: 'Seney Sunrise'

2013-07-11 Thread Darren Addy
The bright patch behind the trees on the left appears a bit blown out.
I'd want it toned down just enough that it doesn't appear paper white.

It's not like there is significant detail there that is going to be
brought out if it is less than paper white. I don't personally have
a problem with the highest values being blown out if it is to
preserve more important detail at the opposite end of the dynamic
range. If the scene exceeds the dynamic range of the film/sensor then
something has to give, and I think it is anything but objectionable
here. If you've got blacks that are paper black and you've got the
detail you want in other the other zones, I just don't think it is a
crime to have parts that go paper white.

I have a small area near the horizon of my Kansas Gust Front photo
that is similarly blown out but only one person commenting on it has
ever picked that particular nit.

Re: How do you photograph dark skinned people?

2013-07-12 Thread Darren Addy
Virtually all of the answers so far have focused on exposure only and
not lighting. I found this article to be very informative.
http://www.nyip.edu/photo-articles/archive/photographing-people-of-color
The secret is to create lots and lots of highlights on dark skin.
This can be done with reflectors or side lighting.

From experience, I know that using a strobe from the side would also
be very effective if a wedding dress was in the photo. The side light
shows the dress in relief (which highlights and preserves folds and
details). In fact, a single on-camera strobe is probably the worst way
to show off a white wedding dress.

Shipping only to Europe for the equiv. of $525 (each). Includes

to you (elsewhere), the DA* 300mm f4 is currently $1400.

Fortunately, I'm not tempted (mainly because I'm tapped out. Just

DSLR Camera Market Now Bigger than Point Shoots

2013-07-15 Thread Darren Addy
Those of you that follow Petapixel may have already seen this:
http://petapixel.com/2013/07/15/the-dslr-camera-market-is-now-bigger-than-point-and-shoots/

I think that Ricoh may have seen this coming when they made their
purchase of Pentax. Phone cameras are going to rapidly extinct point
shoot cameras, but the interchangeable lens market is something that
camera phones can't compete with (either in style of functionality).

Companies that are smart will probably stop devoting so many resources
to the PS segement and that should mean good news for DSLR and DSLR
lens development for the companies that have them in their stables.

Prescient analysis or wishful thinking? I report. You decide.

Tim Parkin weighs in on digital vs film (game is not over YET)

2013-07-16 Thread Darren Addy
I believe that Tim Parkin is a PDML subscriber, so maybe he can
illuminate this a bit more, but on Twitter yesterday he pointed to
some extreme crop comparisons between:
Nikon D800E with a Zeiss 25mm lens
and a Mamiya 7 (6x7) with a 50mm lens with Velvia 50 and Adox CMS 20.
The results might surprise you.

Here is the whole scene: http://static.timparkin.co.uk/static/tmp/fullframe.jpg
Here is the D800E (top) and the Velvia (bottom)
http://static.timparkin.co.uk/static/tmp/compared-with-clean-velvia.jpg

And here is the D800E (top) and the Adox CMS 20 (bottom)
http://static.timparkin.co.uk/static/tmp/compared-with-clean-cms20.jpg

I suppose that there could be some debate on the differences in the
lenses and I'm not sure if the film was scanned (or with what). But I
find it interesting that film can still exceed digital at exteme
crops/very large printing sizes and only by going to a 6x7 size over
what is considered the state of the art full frame sensor camera
available today. I think the film wins by a substantial margin.
(Keeping in mind that this is just not *any* film).

For most of us, this is academic, since we rarely need such extreme
crops or print at such sizes, but I find it interesting nonetheless.

After reading this a little bit closer, I don't think that this flash

But this is why when you order a Metz you need to buy one for your

Frankly, my first thought is that this can't be that pricey or hard to

least close to the same cost) but then I saw you said it was an A

Re: Semi-OT: The true reasons for a full frame camera

2013-07-17 Thread Darren Addy
While I'm sure that there is some engineering involved to make the SR
mechanisms handle a larger full frame sensor, in practice the software
change should be rather trivial. Due to the 1.5x FOV factor being done
away with, all one would have to do is a mathematical change in the
focal length that is displayed on the LCD. (What was formerly a 75mm
would become a 50mm). The problem is that I don't think there WAS a
75mm (it was 85mm) but my point is (hopefully) taken. The algorithm
probably needs few changes but the display focal lengths would.

I think the bigger problem is in the processing engine and the number
of AF points. If you are coming from Pentax's AFS-C design perspective
to full frame, I would leave the 11 AF points where they are and then
design more around the periphery (of the larger sensor). Adding a
minimum of 12 might do it, but you have a lot of computational changes
to make to accommodate them. In addition, you have a larger filesize
to process and write to disk (new territory for Pentax) so the buffer
might again be a problem for continuous shooting.

I think that Pentax should probably not shoot for PRO land here, but
ENTHUSIAST land in their first full frame DSLR. Then take the lessons
learned and apply them to the next generation. I think that the body
will have to be somewhat bigger, just to accommodate the larger
mirror/pentaprism needed for a full frame. It wouldn't bother me if
they ignored video COMPLETELY on a full frame camera, but I doubt that
the marketing department would be very excited about that.

I'm not sure that anyone who isn't familiar with the injection molding
(plastics) business can truly appreciate the amount of time and
complexity that goes into a significant new revision (like a full
frame camera would entail). My employers own three injection molding
plants and an injection mold machining business. That's (probably) why
the past several models have all pretty much been in the same K-5
body. A full frame would be a BIG departure from that.

And that isn't even considering the software side of things. There are
reasons that things take time.

mirror box as the ZX/MZ camera and the *ist-Ds camera has a mirror box and
mirror more in keeping with an APS-C sensor. Yet it isn't appreciably
smaller for that, the volume just seems to be distributed differently. Now
the shake reduction system might require a slightly different form factor,
but then again it might not.

what any Pentax FF must offer. Still, it has some shortcomings from my
point of view (beyond Nikon having put their IS in the lenses).

Someone mentioned the D7100 as an example of what a Pentax K5II
follow-on camera would need to be, so I took a look at its specs on
DPReview and it seems to have fixed every concern I had about the D600
(other than IS which I understand ain't gonna' happen).

Semi-OT because the author bases his design of a hypothetical compact FF
Nikon D800c on scaling up the the Pentax K5 body to fit in a FF sensor
  mirror box.

The rest of the article doesn't matter all that much, but I thought it
was interesting for the suggestion that Nikon should be taking design

two quickie test shots. Metadata is above the photo.

 http://www.caguila.com/darreltest/index.html

I'm getting a replacement motor for the DA*. I purchased the lens 4th
quarter of 2007, and this is the first repair I've had on the lens--so that
makes nearly a 6 year run with absolutely no hiccups until this recent
service. Not too bad I guess.

Curious thing about the replacement motor though. The service guy at CRIS
said they had to order the part, which seem well curious to me. Isn't
replacing the motor a common repair? Wouldn't they have motors on hand?

Anyway, the DA* repair takes about two-four weeks. I got the FA 50mm back 10
days after I called to give go-ahead on repairs after getting estimate via
 email.

Well, so far, so good. Keep your fingers crossed for the DA*.

 Cheers, Christine

P.S. Still keeping up with PAW but the last three shots are so boring I
decided to spare the list the pain. :-)

Re: Bulk Film Loading

2013-07-19 Thread Darren Addy
It has been a long time since I have done bulk loading. Bulk loaders
are so cheap right now, that one could have several with a different
kind of film in each (assuming one shoots more than one kind of film).

No need to bulk load the entire roll in one session. To do that you
would need a pretty big supply of reloadable canisters. Obviously, the
more exposures you put in one canister the fewer you need (and the
fewer frames lost to waste), but one of the advantages of bulk loading
is that you can make 12 exposure rolls (if you like). Less time with
film waiting in the camera for exposures to finish a roll (as often
happens with longer rolls).

Dust is your enemy. I'd suggest keeping the bulk loader in a gallon
zip-lock baggie with a packet of silica gel.

Question that I'm wondering about - is there any problem with just putting
the 100 foot roll into the loader and then filling canisters as needed, or
is there a reason why you should load up the whole bulk roll in one session?
Although I do shoot a fair amount of film it would take a month or two to
use up the approximately 20 rolls I'd get out of a 100 foot roll.. Is it OK
to just load up a few canisters as needed, which means the bulk roll would
be stored in the loader, or should I load it all up at once?

 TIA -

Every K-mount Tokina lens I've had, the red dot on the rear flange

That's not the question Ann had, though.

My Olympus 4/3 lenses have a bayonet mount, and a red dot for positioning.

I would not be at all surprised to find that there are other systems that

Re: Bulk Film Loading

2013-07-20 Thread Darren Addy
If you have a lab in your area, see if they will give you some of the
plastic film canisters (with lids) that they normally toss. There are
probably a lot fewer of them these days, but a lab will still be the
accumulator.
Hopefully they haven't gotten precious enough to CHARGE for. But then
you can put a piece of masking (or painter's) tape on the lid and
label THAT. The canister provides other obvious protections, as well.
I'd also add that if you are rolling different sizes that it is also
important to put the number of FRAMES on your label.

PESO: First test shots with Uniplus Tube 25 DA 16-45mm

This is a bit different for me. Instead of curating (at all) this set
is just a DUMP of all jpegs straight from the camera (including the
rejects) that I shot while walking the dog with my K-5ii, Uniplus Tube

45mm end and I believe my aperture on all shots was f/8 (ISO 800).
Most of them are crap (or to be nice unremarkable) but there were a
couple of keepers in there.

Frankly, if you were a Pentax shooter and you were considering
spending $2500 for this lens, you would get more bang-for-the-buck by
purchasing a Sony A900 (24.3MP Full Frame with Sony Exmor sensor

give up the 1.5x longer FOV, but in exchange get more megapixels and a
full frame sensor.

It was actually recommended to me by a Nikon pro when I was taking a

went to another of his workshop he had to borrow and examine it as he had
heard it was equal to or better than the Nikon 200 macro he was using. Quite
 a recommendation I'd say.

In my estimation I'd have to say its worth as much or more than the A* 135

Darren, I'd sell it when they unwrap my cold dead fingers from around it !
It one of the lenses I'll never sell as long as I'm on this side of the
 grass I'm still shooting Pentax.

It was actually recommended to me by a Nikon pro when I was taking a
workshop from him and he saw I was shooting Pentax. When I did get it and
went to another of his workshop he had to borrow and examine it as he had
heard it was equal to or better than the Nikon 200 macro he was using.
 Quite
 a recommendation I'd say.

In my estimation I'd have to say its worth as much or more than the A* 135
because of its unique function - macro with working distance.

Re: July Extra PUG - Open Gallery - is UP

2013-07-23 Thread Darren Addy
Really enjoyed this whole gallery, which I think is one of the best I
have seen since becoming familiar with the PUG. (I promise I will have
entries again. one day soon.)

There were really just too many, one could say things about all of them.

My fav would have to be Brian Walter's postcard perfect The
Struggle, with Dario's How It Was and Rick Wormer's Playing at the
edge of the Sand. All just gorgeous.
I loved the technical perfection of AnnSan's Soho Shadows (which would
also make a lovely cyanotype print, IMHO) along with Bob Sullivan's
Looking for a Mate and Patrick Temmerman's Morning Fog. I would
also be happy to claim Zos' Random Butterfly and Gerrit Visser's
Done Fishing as my own.

Special mention goes to Calvary by Matthew Hunt for capturing FOUR
crosses (I only saw three on my first viewing, but then I've always
been a bit slow). Well done. And whether it was purposeful or not, the
placing of Jorge Zaven Kurkdjian's lovely Yerevan immediately after
Calvary made me see three crosses in his image, as well.

Wonderful stuff and very inspirational (everyone)!

A bit closer to my first cyanotype

2013-07-24 Thread Darren Addy
(This is not OT, since the original image was created with my Pentax K-5.)
I mentioned in a previous thread, my interest in Alternative
Processes. That interest was reawakened at our local Art in the Park
a couple of Sunday's ago. There was a Nebraska practitioner of
Alternative Processes there (that I had never heard of before) by the
name of Jason Jilg.
http://www.jasonjilg.com/home

His work was quite lovely and he displayed cyanotypes, salt prints,
bromide prints, and tin types. I got to visit with him briefly and
gathered a few nuggets of information. He is soon moving to Wisconsin,
but apparently he had offered classes through the Sheldon Art Gallery
in Lincoln, NE (which I was also unaware of).

Anyway, this reminded me that I had intended to purchase Jill
Enfield's new title after it was published in June, so I did. I can
highly recommend it and even wrote a review on Amazon for it. In
addition, I checked another book that is considered a classic in that
field entitled, Coming into Focus by John Barnier. This book is
apparently used in many classes and so was in short supply when I last
looked (and textbook expensive). However, this is a good time to
purchase textbooks (before students begin purchasing them again for
August classes) and I found a Very Good copy for less than $20
shipped. While I was at it, I purchased the chemistry for cyanotypes
(Photographers' Formulary 07-0091 Liquid Cyanotype Printing Kit) and
some hake brushes.

I've created the inverted image files for a couple of different
versions of my image God Rays that I hope will make a decent
cyanotype. I have the transparency material (Inkpress Transparency
Film, 8-1/2x11) and I plan on printing 7x10-1/2 on watercolor paper
from the local Hobby Lobby.

Once I have a few transparencies, I'd like to experiment with some of
the other processes beginning with Van Dyke brown.

If there is anyone on the list that has dabbled in Alternative
Processes, I'd love to hear your experiences.

Re: reviews on the wirecutter.com

2013-07-24 Thread Darren Addy
The inability to use m42 lenses (without an adapter that contains an
optical element for infinity focusing) is the main reason I would not
have a Nikon. Love to experiment with those legacy lenses. And in-body
image stabilization is a biggie feature, for me.

On Wed, Jul 24, 2013 at 4:07 PM, Larry Colen l...@red4est.com wrote:
A friend just pointed me to http://thewirecutter.com
It seems that they do far more in depth reviews than other places, and

Their mid-level DSLR review is on the D7100,
 http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-mid-range-dslr-is-the-nikon-d7100/

And, they are thorough enough to compare it with the K-5II
Surprisingly, the biggest and most serious competition to the Nikon D7100
right now comes from Pentax, who is often forgotten in these debates. The
Pentax K-5 IIs is almost blow-for-blow on par with the D7100, and in most
respects is its equal. The choice between the two has been a frequent topic
of internet discussion. The image quality is on par, it’s more weather
sealed, and Pentax packs image stabilization into the body rather than the
lenses, meaning it works no matter what glass you attach to the front.

However, the Nikon has more focusing points, is higher resolution, can hold
two SD cards at once, the lenses are generally cheaper, and right now as a
company, Nikon is holding its own far better.

Eventually, the best way to decide between the two if you’re torn is to have
a look at the lens selection, and see which fits your shooting style better
(if you’re super outdoorsy, the Pentax weather sealing might appeal to you),
and try and get both in hand to shoot with for a while. Comfort in hand can
be a very important deciding factor.

But the Nikon is simply the best APS-C camera on the market right now, thanks
to its excellent under-the-hood guts, software, and overall image quality.
Without some sort of compelling reason to go in the other direction, I’d say
the Nikon still is the top choice.

Re: Semi-OT: silent lens upgrades

2013-07-25 Thread Darren Addy
Interesting article, thanks for the link.

It would seem that the optical change in the Super-Multi-Coated 135mm
f2.5 from version 1 (5 elements in 4 groups) to version 2 (6 elements
in 6 groups), the same optical design that was carried over to the
first SMC K version) was an example of a silent change made by
Pentax. They did change the Part Number (which dealers would have
noticed, and you can find stamped in the little A/M switch) but many
people are completely oblivious to the fact that these are (in fact)
*completely* different lenses with the same name. (In this case it was
an upgrade. The 6 element design (K) is one of the highest rated
Pentax lenses... 9.31 out of 10
http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/SMC-Pentax-K-135mm-F2.5-Lens.html)

Especially aggregious is the supposed Review Page on Pentax Forums
for the lens, which groups the two optical designs together so you
don't know if the reviewer is reviewing the one or the other.

What if Pentax did a Kickstarter?

2013-07-25 Thread Darren Addy
Here is an ingenious Kickstarter that has already raised 3x the number
of $$$ they had as their goal and there is still most of the month
left.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lomography/the-lomography-petzval-portrait-lens
Delivery of the first lenses is supposed to be Feb. 2014

It is by an established company (Zenit) and it made me wonder why an
established company like Pentax couldn't do something similar. Take a
lens that everybody wants and Kickstart it. The backers get their lens
before the general public (and often for less than the eventual
selling price) in exchange for their support (and their prepaid WAIT).
The company can judge the level of excitement for a product by the
amount of buzz and support dollars it generates. Delivery is in the
future.

It would be possible to fund even relatively small Pentax projects
this way, with the manufacturing process even being different than the
mass-produced way, but if successful a particular lens could be moved
into the mass-production methodology.

Thoughts?

OT: anyone familiar with UK copyright (for publishing in the U.S.)?

2013-07-25 Thread Darren Addy
I have an interesting situation that I just bumped across. I've found
a long out-of-print title (published in 1980) by a now deceased author
(died 2009) who, in a 1997 USENET post, gave permission to reproduce
(photo/ copy) his book if anyone found a copy. He also stated that
he owned the copyright (therefore could give such permission). I have
reason to believe that the title might be reasonably popular today, if
again available.

I guess my question is: Would his copyright have passed to his heirs?
(Or what happens to one's copyright at death in the UK system)? Does
his giving permission to reproduce mean that I could now republish it
in the U.S. without treading on anyone's rights? Or if someone
maintains rights, how might I go about finding out who and procuring
them?

Thanks for any insights.

first SMC K version) was an example of a silent change made by

Especially aggregious is the supposed Review Page on Pentax Forums

don't know if the reviewer is reviewing the one or the other.

Just a short follow-up. It appears that what I am asking about is
called orphan works and UK law recently changed regarding them:

We are 33 years out from the original publishing date (no other

know who the original publishing house was, but there would be no
reason to give them a heads-up on what I'd like to do... they can't
possibly have publishing rights that extend this far out (can they?)

Interesting.

Learning to refine my Google Fu. It appears that copyright extends 70
years after the author's death in the UK and that copyright is like
property (assignable to heirs, can be bought/sold, etc).
http://www.ipo.gov.uk/types/copy/c-ownership/c-creator.htm
There is also a difference between the property rights and the moral
rights that go with copyright in the UK.
In addition, the Berne Convention governs copyright law between
countries, and that the UK and the US got behind in 1988.

Re: Modern Tin Types

2013-07-26 Thread Darren Addy
I know you are joking, but the introduction of Jill Enfield's new book
(Jill Enfield's Guide to Photographic Alternative Processes: Popular
Historical and Contemporary Techniques) makes the point that when
photography was introduced and started to become mainstream, painters
throught that their craft was dead. It seems silly to us to think of
painters getting rid of their painting gear, canvases, and paints just
because they now owned a camera (or their neighbor did)... but that's
pretty much what has happened when it comes to film, and especially
darkroom equipment.

One reason that Alternative Processes appeal to me is that regular
film work lasting into the future depends upon manufacturers that
continue to produce film and photographic papers (something that is
going to end at some point and already has for some beloved films and
papers). The only alternative (impractical for most of us) is to have
a stockpile of film and paper for our lifetimes. Alternative Processes
do not rely on such things. You size your own papers with the
light-sensitive combination of chemicals and then they develop in
other chemicals (or simply react to UV light). Your negatives can be
produced on your inkjet printer (from digital images) or produced
analog on paper negatives (possibly adding the fun of building your
own large format camera). It's a big world with lots of different
techniques to explore and hopefully master.

If hipness could kill, he'd be in the ICU.

Seriously though, there is a lot that you can learn from shooting film,
though most of it could be applied to shooting with a digital camera.
There is nothing preventing you from taking care to set up each photo
with digital, and then move on after it has been taken.

He talks about the dynamic range of film, and to my surprise Tri-X
might exceed the dynamic range of the K-5 at ASA 400
 http://www.dantestella.com/technical/dynamic.html
ItemNumeric Stops of range in subject
Polaroid Sprintscan 120 scanner 3.9dDepends on the film being

I will say that the kinesthetic experience of using a film camera is
different than that of using a digital. In comparison, most digital

 (See e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSliMjBfhF4t=15 )

It does not appear on the original video, and occurs only when I upload
the original .AVI file. If I process the file (using avidemux, - nice
free program for processing/converting videos) and then upload, no
such clicks happen. Also, no problem with the files from K7.

 Has any body experienced this?
I wonder whose fault (Pentax or Youtube) that is, and if there is some
way to overcome this problem, short of converting every video before
 uploading.

would determine whether it was worthwhile for a company to offer the
option or now. It would certainly be one way of separating your

the K-50, for instance).

Gawd you are SO lazy Larry.
;)

Seriously, even if such a thing were fairly trivial, I think it goes
against the spirit of the list, since it is unlikely that you would
expend the energy to go back and find the original PESO thread in
which to place any comments you might have. That means less feedback
for each individual PESO/GESO posters and (over time) would probably
lead to fewer PESO/GESO posts, as a result.

If you wish to organize, it is easy to create a filter (in Gmail) and
put all emails with PESO or GESO in the subject line in a different
folder that you could check on occasion, if you are just trying to
separate them out from your other Inbox emails.

I've been watching for one of these for a while on eBay and picked up this

 This is a T-Mount lens and came with a Canon mount. I ordered a T2 to K

remarkably found it. It fits but the mounting screws for it are missing. I
have it taped to the lens.

The T Mount that works is simply marked Adapter for K/M. Any idea what the
proper designation of this kind of T Mount would be? I looked on BH and
eBay, but only see the T-2 mounts. The black electrical tape I used works
pretty well, but I'd like to get a properly mounted adapter.

Interesting discussion on this guy (and the psychological profile of
artists in general):

Also, from an image in that discussion, it appears that he used
eyeglass lenses and other lenses taken from existing optics. Probably
not so much grinding lenses from plastic with toothpaste and ash (but
that does sound more romantic).

You will notice that all of his images are BW. I would imagine that
he did his own processing and. in addition, BW takes care of those
nasty chromatic aberrations.

Re: Enablement - Sima 100mm f2.0 Macro! And T-Mount Question

2013-08-03 Thread Darren Addy
Seriously, as most of you probably already know, soft focus does have
its place. The brides would love a series that I would do (back in my
wedding photography days) that was close-ups of the BG looking into
each other's eyes (shot by doorway or window light with no flash, and
from the perspective of over the shoulder of one and then the other).
Back then we would use a UV filter that had clear nail polish dabbed
around the outside, leaving the very center portion clear. The effect
could vary depending upon the aperture and how much light you had
spilling on the front of the filter.

Soft focus is also good for vain older women's portraiture.

Re: What if Pentax did a Kickstarter?

2013-08-05 Thread Darren Addy
Don't know if anyone has seen the follow-up story on Petapixel, but
Zenit's Kickstarter has raised over $1 MILLION dollars and has 18 days
still left to go in the campaign. Roughly 2500 copies of the lens have
been pre-ordered.

I do think that there are some lessons that Pentax (and other
companies) could learn from this. Over half of the million dollars was
raised by the people buying this lens for $350 or $400 (funding at a
level that gets a production lens, I should say). People paid MORE for
the privilege of getting one of the FIRST lenses produced (low serial
numbers), or having something engraved on the lens, and some people
paid up to $2600 for packages that included a trip and the lens. Zenit
was also smart in making two versions (brass and black) available for
this lens, so they could effectively double the number of funding
points (making separate ones for each lens version).

I have to believe that this has wildly exceeded Zenit's initial goals.
Knowing exactly how many are preordered will allow them to source
the materials at bulk quantity prices, as well as gauge potential
future demand (should they wish to continue offering it into the
future, or have some to sell as stock).

It is also worth noting that this is for a lens design that is highly
flawed by modern optical standards.

Rogers is a Nebraska village on Hwy 30 (historically known as the
Lincoln Highway) and is almost exactly at the midpoint of traveling
between the larger Nebraska cities of Columbus and Fremont,
Nebraska. According to the 2010 census, there were 95 people living in
Rogers. This old timey auto repair shop (also known as a garage)
has long captured my attention while driving past, but this is the
first time I took the opportunity to stop and photograph it. As luck
would have it, after one shot my camera battery died and I didn't have
another with me, so I got only one shot. I had some settings wrong, so
it came out with the wrong color balance and exposed improperly but I
didn't get rid of it. A long time later I tripped across the image and
decided to have go at it with the Nik software filters of Color Efex
Pro 3 and then Silver Efex Pro. This was my favorite of the various
iterations that I made. I may share the others later for a comparison.

Re: Carrying a camera on a long walk

2013-08-06 Thread Darren Addy
I'm not sure if this qualifies as readily accessible to you or not,
but the Lowepro Flipside series of backpack bags are kind of
ingenious. When wearing it as a pack the zipper side is against your
back (pickpockets/thieves can't open it). But it has a strap that goes
around your waist. You can slip your arm out of one side and rotate
the pack to your front, where the zipper access if face up in front of
you for easy access (without putting the pack down in the
mud/dirt/etc). Zip it up, rotate it back around and slip your arms
back in and it is a comfortable pack again. How easy this is depends a
lot on how much you load into it (and what size you get). I've got the
Flipside 300 AW and I can get quite a bit of stuff in it. If you want
something even smaller they make a 200 AW. Just checked Amazon and the
smaller 200 AW is actually $8 more than the 300 AW.

I find it a comfortable backpack and much preferable to having the
camera around my neck for extended periods, particular if with a big
lens.

I can see why you like it so much, George. You captured the decisive moment!

That's the real test. That generation seldom asks for prints any

George, honestly I think a photo like that defies and and supersedes any

This is one of my favorite photos. Taken long ago with a Spotmatic.

I missed the focus. They ran from a brightly lit part of the yard
into shadow and I didn't react fast enough so the original was
underexposed. Just think, if I had the fancy auto-focus,
auto-exposure camera of today it would be be a technical masterpiece!
Well, probably not. More likely it would be mis-focused and poorly
 exposed in a different way.

I scanned it from a 13 year old faded slide, cropped it, tried to fix
the exposure, and cloned out a bunch of junk that was cluttering up
 the yard.

Anyway, as technically poor as it is, this photo has always been and
continues to be a favorite because of the content. I'm going to make a
small print. It will make a nice addition to the family photos that
 hang on the wall.

Here are some pictures from my recent trip to Rouen et ses alentours:

 http://www.web-options.com/Rouen2013/

I cycled from Greenwich to Newhaven, ferry to Dieppe arriving at 4am, then
cycled to Rouen. Later I took the train to Paris and cycled back to Rouen
via Saint-Cloud, Versailles, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Medan, Meulan,
Giverny/Vernon and Les Andelys. Then a round trip to Ry (for Mme Bovary),
Vascoeuil, Lyons la Foret, Mortemer, Fleury-sur-Andelle and back via
Montmain. A day trip by train to Cleres, which is lovely, and finally
 cycled
back from Rouen to Dieppe (in 3 hours!). 700km / 420 miles in total on the
bike. The whole thing was really enjoyable, apart from getting caught up
 in
rush hour traffic trying to get out of Paris.

There are still many photos which I haven't looked at yet, but this is a
quick selection mainly from Rouen. It wasn't specifically a photo trip -
it's awkward to cycle and take pictures at the same time! The routes were
determined by literary and arty choices, as well as their historical
 interest and beauty.

I stayed in a lovely gite, which I can recommend to anyone who wants to
spend a few days in Rouen:
 http://www.gites-beffroy.fr/

I hope you enjoy the pictures. Some of them may seem a little obscure, but
they're intended for people in my French circle who will get the
