One more hello to everyone.

I just heard more good news from Ken's other half. Fred has been through
some anxious moments since April 19th. Ken is finally back in Keene, NH
and is doing well. He'll need to stay in a rehab facility for about a week
before returning to his own home and family: Jasmine, Cayenne, and Fred.
Apparently his life and brain were saved when the NJ EMT crew packed him in
ice, preventing his brain from overheating. No wonder it seemed to take
much longer than usual for the professionals to attend to Ken on the floor of
the PAL gym before eventually loading him into the ambulance.
Fred says that Ken is in good spirits and is already making plans for the
future. No doubt he will be hearing from quite a few of us while he
improves.

I am looking for three gold-plated soundboxes to fit the Edison P-1
Portable Phonographs that plays needle-cut records which is only
made of pot metal. The P-2 used a similar nickel-plated pot metal metal
soundbox. The one on E-bay is for a different model
 Edison needle-cut portable.

looking for an Edison Needle Cut reproducer?? This one is brass, not pot
metal!

Thank you for comments everybody.
This video was originally made to show basically what was involved with
removing a spring, and was posted in a thread on the old OTVMMB in a discussion
with some members that hadn't even seen the inside of a barrel. It was never
intended to be an instructional video for someone who has never touched a phono
motor before.
The spring is a small Thorens spring, which is mentioned if you read the
discription box, where I also recommend wearing gloves, eye protection, and
that a beginner should not attempt a large spring like a diamond disc, if they
have never done a spring before. I also mention using a jig to hold the barrel,
giving you two hands to manipulate the spring.
Once you've got the hang of smaller springs though, larger springs are not
impossible to do in exactly the same way.
I will be adding another video to this one, showing a real spring being
removed replaced. I have been trying to get to it for a couple weeks now, but
haven't found the time as yet. It will be posted in the next couple days
though, using a diamond disc spring, and perhaps a large Victor double spring
barrel as well.
However, I will not be using jigs or gloves, because I have never used them
since I started doing springs when I was 13 years old. I will be recommending
the use of both in the video however, as it seem most people can't be bothered
reading the discription box.

One piece of advise that was posted, I must say I disagree with, and that is
using multi-grips on the spring. This can score the steel lead to spring
breakage.

so what is the solution? I know the N was originally supplied with

it was thicker than a #2.
  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Happy Valentine's day to all!
Has anybody got a Victor III Back bracket and tonearm that they would trade for
a Victor II back bracket and tonearm?? There is not much striping on the Vic II
tonearm, and I wouldn't be too picky about the Victor III bracket..I have a
really nice Victor III that I am going to have to sell, but the back bracket is
incorrect and I would like to fix that.
It does have a very nice elbow as well, and I might be enticed to throw that in
for a straight trade. I know I'd be getting the worst of that deal, but I do
need to sell the three. Spouse out of work for 8 months now and nothing in

[Phono-L] hello all

2009-02-01 Thread zonophone2...@aol.com
here is a friend of mines comment on a new move by ebay
any one else care to comment

This is simply the text (below, in blue) of a quick message I sent to
eBay on their Contact Us website option. Earlier today I spent a half-hour
on-line with an eBay helper person, trying to get an answer to my question.
It took Vickie almost 30 minutes to verify that the problem could not be
resolved.
Now I am sharing this info with friends who use eBay. I was disappointed to
learn that a useful feature has been eliminated. When watching or bidding
on items, there were formerly several buttons from which to choose, including
delete from list or compare or add a note. I used the comment button
to add my thoughts, like whether I was sniping the item; my maximum potential
bid; real name and past satisfsaction of/with the seller; suggested value of
a specific record in guide books; recent sale prices of a  similar item;
whether I already own 1 or more examples; person or friend who has been
seeking
this item; errors or omissions in the seller's description; etc. Just another
unfortunate move by eBay. I am not surprised that their revenue and user
satisfasction are both declining.

Hi Brian,
I do art restration for a living and use many different types of chemicals
to clean smoke and dirt from paint. I would start with Kotton Cleanser -but
do not use paper towels, rags or steel wool-use cotton balls. put some on a
cotton ball and use a circular motion. do not try to clean every bit on the
first pass. Do the entire item then wipe down with mineral spirts.Let dry
and repeat.
If this does not clean it up in the manner you are looking for let me know.

It is right as rain, just incomplete. It's an early 20th century projector.
The case should be oak and it looks to be. It's missing the lens for one
thing and the reels, illuminant, et al are missing. Basically what is there
is the feed mechanism. Not as rare as one would imagine, they turn up like
this rather frequently.

What do you all make of this? The seller describes it as a peephole
device, but the original serial number plate reads Projecting
Kinetiscope. The cabinet at first glance appears to be home made, but
the age of it seems honest; not faked to look old. The external hardware
certainly appears to be age-appropriate, and yet the cabinet wood looks
like pine or fir, which would be odd for the time.

The mechanism appears intact, but I don't see anything that's obviously
involved with projection. Is this part of a larger affair, or something
made from a more complete device to adapt it to a different use?

  Hi Allen --

It's basically a mechanical procedure, very straightforward, that you
can have done by any number of people in the phonograph restoration
world. However, my experience is that Steve Medved has a unique
sensitivity to the nuances of several affiliated aspects of this job,
that most of the others don't possess or don't worry about. In
addition, he does listening tests on suitable machines as part of the
work. He may recommend other improvements, such as replacing gaskets,
which should be done at any rate if the existing ones are original or
  hard.

The result of Steve's conscientious approach can be a dramatic
improvement in sound quality and volume, over what you might expect
from a simple R R (remove replace) of the stylus bar or basic
  stylus and gasket replacement.

  Good luck,
  Andy

I don't have a great deal of knowledge on Phonographs to get involved with
this message board but on this subject I believe I do.
If you want a truly honest person that has fantastic skills with repairs and
also the ability for testing reproducers simply don't waste your time trying
to contact anyone else bare Steve.
I had an Edison Opera with a damaged reproducer and hated the sound.
This reproducer needed some very delicate repairs which Steve made a
fantastic job of he also fitted a new stylus and completely overhauled this
Diamond A reproducer.
I couldn't of hoped for anything better and it plays brilliantly I now hear
sounds that I could never hear before.
I am from New Zealand and it was a big decision to send the Diamond A
reproducer out side New Zealand in case I never got it back as I don't know
where to find another one.
At a time when there are so many people trying to rip you off in some way it
is a big decision sending any part half way around the world for repairs
and knowing if this part goes missing the machine will be shelved. But when
you find the right

1. Columbia AS Coin Op. Outstanding original finish. Works great..plays a
record completely, coin op mechanism works perfectly. Great original decal.
Original coin drawer, crank, feet. It has the early tag marked only S Sign
board is new but matches very well. Original reproducer with the set screw.
There are a couple of new parts (coin chute, connection from trunion to
post, post and timing gear. The horn is a 14 inch all brass horn with
original elbow with a nice patina. It is a soldered seam between the bell
and cone so it is early. Asking $5500.

2. Victor model P-1. This is an outstanding original example. All
original save the turntable felt and brake leather. This is the second
incarnation of this machine and has a unique motor that mounts on the bottom
of the cabinet. The speed control actually has a knob that comes though the
side of the cabinet and a vertical governor assembly. I believe the later P
models are the only Victors to use this motor. It has the oxidized copper
support arm and escutcheons. Finish is good with minor pitting on the
support arm. Wooden traveling arm and a metal elbow horn with nice original
decal and nearly perfect bell with a nice patina. Original Long throat
Exhibition reproducer. Asking $1500

I wanted to hear your thoughts on this. I just got a notification email

them is that they are no longer going to allow paper payments, i.e. money
orders or checks as a form of payment. Excuse me, but shouldn't it lie with
the
seller what form of payment to accept?? This is going to cost them a lot of
business from sellers and buyers who will not use Paypal. Of course since
eBay owns Paypal, they are foreseeing a swell of business and fees...
Here is the text of eBay's communication on this:
Beginning late October 2008, all items listed on eBay.com must be paid for
using one of the following approved payment options:

Direct credit or debit card payment via a merchant credit card account
PayPal
ProPay
Payment on pick-up
Paper payment methods such as checks and money orders will no longer be
accepted on eBay.com.

By January 2009, all approved electronic payment methods will be integrated
into eBay checkout. For example, buyers will be able to enter their credit
card number directly into eBay checkout, and the payment will be routed to the
seller's Internet merchant account or to their PayPal account.

Please note that the new payments policy will not apply to the vehicles
categories in Motors, capital equipment categories in Business Industrial,
Mature Audiences and Real Estate.

[Phono-L] Columbia no. 5 reproducer repair for Columbia AO

2008-09-10 Thread zonophone2...@aol.com
hi ray
you are right
a ball stylus might work like for pathes
its a neat reproducer and very much like a disc machine one
but the kit you buy you need to make sure you have the sliding mount to put
it on
the tube where the horn goes is a bit bigger too so you have to adapt the
horn a bit
good luck to all the searches for it

That's too bad, Zono, as the proper stylus may be tough to find. The kit to

convert an AO to an AO/AW was made available by Columbia, but I don't recall
seeing one for sale. The #8 reproducer is rare and was used only on the
AO/AW and the AW (other than the MG which we don't have to talk about as few
if any exist). I guess one reason to convert the AO, assuming the kit could
be found, would be to have a much rarer machine with an unusual reproducer.

[Phono-L] Columbia BC friction wheel drive

2008-08-31 Thread zonophone2...@aol.com

Hi Greg,

Does anyone make reproduction parts for these reproducers?

Steve

: [Phono-L] Columbia BC friction wheel drive Ron, it's difficult to
explain the BC friction wheel driveshaft system without pictures or
handwaving
:o) The drive train begins with a gear-driven piece of metal tubing which is
enclosed in the stationary outer housing which is fastened to the gear
housing casting on the side of the machine. This first piece of tubing (call
it part 1) rotates but does not translate axially. Inside this rotating
tubing is the brass coupling sleeve (part 2) which can rotate and also slide
along its axis. And inside the brass sleeve is the solid rod (part 3) which
connects with the amber wheel. This part 3 rotates and also slides axially.
Part 2 has two slots, diametrically opposed and milled into its outside
surface that run almost the full length of the part. Part 1 transmits its
torque via two setscrews which extend inward from Part 1 into the slots
milled
in part 2. (Access to these screws is via a hole drilled in the s
tationary outer tube.) This allows Part 2 to be rotated by part 1 and also
to slide axially inside part 1. Part 3 has a T shaped fixture at its end
that engages two longitudinal slots milled INSIDE of part 2. This is what
transmits the torque from part 2 to part 3 and also allows part 3 to
translate axially. The slots inside of part 2 do not extend all the way to
the
ends of part 2. When part 3 is pulled along the mandrel with the reproducer,
its T fixture hits the ends of the slots inside of part 2 and thereby drags
part 2 along with it axially. All this assemblage has a purposefully
sloppy fit to allow the amber wheel end of part 3 to wobble around radially
so
it can follow the stylus assembly as it is raised and lowered from the
record surface. Clear as mud? Again, it's hard to envision what's happening
without seeing the structure in detail. But maybe this helps understand it.

film

Edison traveling Kinetoscope Model A, B, C appeared in various forms. The
most desirable is the one with movable lamp house and two lenses, one for
the
motion picture and the other for glass slides. These projecting
Kinetoscopes
can go to $7,000 if they have all the lenses, arms, base, crank, etc.

If the item is a floor Kinetoscope let me know as I will be at the auction
with a VERY large newly infused checkbook!

The Models A, B, C have serial numbers and these are important to
collectors of projection equipment. The earliest As are very hard to find
as Edison
tried to rent them out rather than sell them to maintain his control over
the
business.

If all they have is the oak fold up cased projection head then you can
expect
a collector to bid up to $2,000 for it alone. The oak carry case was
always
one of the first things that gets separated from the projection head.

Heads equipped with a shutter in front also sell for more. There are many
variables that you need to describe before buying.

Yes, the vinyl records from the postwar period have held up
 surprisingly
well so far. Certainly better than magnetic tape from that period. If
 you
can manage to find a Vogue that hasn't been played or scratched to
 death,
the sound quality on them is pretty good. But one of their potential
problems is the oxidation of the aluminum substrate. I have more than
 one
Vogue that has been severely cracked or chipped in years past which has
allowed moisture and air to get to the aluminum surface. This causes
 mild
to severe powderizing and bubbling of oxide to form on the aluminum
 which
then bubbles up the paper and vinyl sheet laid on top of it. This
 damage
can usually be heard before it's seen - the bubbling causes a noticeable
increase in the rumble content when you play the record. I'm not sure
 why
Vogues were made with an aluminum substrate rather than using a vinyl
 core
as is done with modern picture records. Might have been a patent
infringement thing since RCA and others had made picture records in the
  1930s.

Indeed. There have been very few plastics that have had any
   permanence.
Catalin has shown to be more stable than many others, but when the
plasticizer finally dries out of the plasticx, it's curtains for the
  piece.
In the thirties, plastics were all the panic. There were things shown
  in
plastics that were downright sensational. I'm sure that a lot of
  people
thought that glass would soon be made obsolete by gorgeous plastic
 things.
Well, my mother and my aunt didn't throw out their cut crystal, and I
 now
have a couple of cabinets full of it.

In those days (that I remember so well), the automotive industry went
ballistic over plastics too. Today, there are guys who re-mold
  steering
wheels for those cars. The big plstic was Tenite I, a plastic by
 Tennessee
Eastman in Kingsport, Tennessee. You'll travel long and far to see an
original steering wheel on a prewar car!. However, I have a '38
 Cadillac,
with the original steering wheel, and still decent dash plastic, and
   you
  just don't ever see that.

Which brings us to the Vogue records. Tom Saffady, a tool and die
 maker
  on
East eight mile road in East Detroit (Across 8 Mile from Detroit) got
 the
idea of making these pretty records. I understand that he used an
 aluminum
base, attached the artwork to it, and molded the plastic to it,
  pressing
the recording in the same operation. While I don't know for sure what
 the
plastic is, I'm sure that it's a vinyl, and of the best quality at
   the
time. When they hit the stores, they made quite a splash, and they
  sold
well, more for their novel character than anything else. No surprise,

Subject: [Phono-L] Vogue Picture Records values

Around 10 to 15 years ago, most Vogues (except the rare 8 or 9 ones) sold
in the neighborhood of $100 or so. With the advent of eBay, their value
has dropped significantly. It seems that most go for $20-$30 or less
these days. Value guides were available at one time, but now are
worthless. Are there any Vogue collectors on the list that would have a
spreadsheet or other information on current values of these picture
records? Is there a factor, such as 1/4 or 1/3 that could be applied to
the old values that would approximate the current value? Thanks for any
 information..

[Phono-L] Vogue Picture Records values

2008-08-13 Thread zonophone2...@aol.com
hi all
queen for a day did go for a lot of money on ebay a few years ago
and kurt was the underbidder
but he already had one anyway
i believe kurt sold all his collection on his auction awhile ago
and had a starting price for them all

Agreed, Ray. I don't think those Bear Family repro's were ever intended to
substitute for the real thing, but to be some kind of tribute novelty to
make noise for the label that issued them (probably just a passion of the
owner). I have one of the repro's, and while the audio quality is decent,
it's graphics don't look that great at all, not even half as sharp and
detailed as any of the original Vogues I have. But I was curious about
them, and now I know.

That collection that was offered in Kurt Nauck's catalog a few auctions ago
was stupifying, with all those one-off tests and what-have-you. I don't
know how great an investment Vogues are right now either, but I was sure
drooling over those pages for a while.

Thanks for your interesting comment on the Vogues. I agree with you on
 the
reason for the drop in value of the Wurlitzer 1015, but I am not so sure
  the
same argument applies to the Vogues. The 1015's were bought and sold as
entertainment devices, and the bars, etc. that bought them for 45s and CDs
could care less if they were original or reproduction machines. On the
other hand, vogues were generally not bought for their music content, but
rather as vintage collectibles. Prior to eBay, collectors considered them
to be scarce items, and most record collectors, I would think, would
 have
little interest in the reproductions. Once eBay demonstrated to the hobby
that they were rather plentiful, the prices started to drop to the current
low values. I don't know how well the reproduction Vogues are doing these
days, but I don't see them advertised very much (although I don't look for
them). Whatever the reason for the price decline, Vogues don't look like
 good investments these days :)

[Phono-L] Repairing a Columbia one piece aluminum arm

I'm restoring a Columbia type BN outside horn phonograph. This machine has
a one piece aluminum horn and an analyzing reproducer. The arm appears to
have been plated originally. I assumed that I could buff the aluminum to a
nice shine. My problem is that the surface is quite pitted and when I try
to buff it, the dirty buffing compound winds up in all of the pits. I had
planned on filling the pits with a car body filler and then priming it and
painting it with a chrome paint that contains aluminum particles and gives a
fair shine. A friend suggested I fill the pits with an aluminum epoxy and
then polish it out. I've goggled epoxy aluminum and found a number of
products. There are a couple of aluminum putty sticks mentioned but I can't
tell if they can be polished like aluminum after they set. Have any of you
used any products like this to repair aluminum arms? Secondly I would like
to replace the rubber pad that fits between the Analyzing reproducer and the
arm. Can anyone recommend a source for this piece or a suitable material to
make one out of. I have enough of the old one to make a pattern. Lastly I
would like to replace the 3 screws used to hold the reproducer to the arm .
The ones I have are very rusty and won't hold the reproducer tightly to the
arm. I did jury rig it well enough to make it work by backing up the 3
screws with some small rubber O rings and small washers. I would like to
repair it properly and assume the correct screws will do it. Do any of you

know the correct thread pitch of the screws or a source to replace them.
Were any additional gaskets or washers used with these screws originally?
Thanks in advance for your help.

instead of Victor Artists is says Artistas Victor on it and there is a
store address stamped on the back from a store in Mexico.

Does anyone know if this would be from the same era as the American
version? It apperas to be exactly the same poster. The label on the back
is obviously the same one as on the American version as it is in
English. Also, it has an old frame I believe to be the original but it
does not look like the one in the book. Would differernt types of frames
been normal for such advertising pictures. Should I try to get the
original frame repaired so it's safe to hang or just refame it?

I have found a mahogany C-19 that is looking for a home. It has suffered
water damage to its lower two inches or so, and needs veneer help there as
well as on its lid. It is complete, no missing trim bits or hardware. It
is mechanically complete as well and played a DD with no problem. There are
maybe 15 or so disks with it. It is located in Seekonk, MA, off rt. 44 near
the Rehoboth town line.

If you are interested in a project, contact
me off list and I'll provide a phone and e-mail for the owners. They need
to get rid of it to empty out a house and will let it go for short money.

Subject: [Phono-L] Edison Home Under Glass
Message-ID: 208485.10789...@web30314.mail.mud.yahoo.com

I have a very good friend that wants to sell his Edison home under glass. He
has asked me to list it on eBay or sell it any other way I could, as he needs
the money. I believe that he is asking a very fair price based on the
condition , etc, so thought I would offer it up to the list first. He lives
approximately 2 1/2 hours from me and I will not be picking it up and
inspecting it for a week or so. He is asking $3,750.00 for it. The last ones i
have seen sell went for around $5000+. I have not seen this machine for some
time so my description is from memory and talking to him.
The case has been refinished , and while the glass is old the woodwork on the
glass lid has all been very professionally replaced with old quartered oak. I
can't remember for sure if the pulls are original or replaced and he does not
know , nor since he is elderly can he describe them to me very well so i can
make a judgment, I am pretty sure though that they are not the original ones.
The below cylinder cabinet is the standard HS cabinet , but it does not have
the applied carving above the top drawer as i have seen on most of them. i
has the pressed design that you generally see on the cylinder cabinet alone. It
is however my understanding and in looking a HS big picture ad I believe that
the Hm UG originally could have been offered with this style cabinet also.
The Home model A's bed plate as i remember it is in fair condition , but
certainly presentable. I am told it had taken a beating in a shed with the lid
off prior to his purchase about 10 years ago. I don't
remember the crank, but know it is not the normal nickel crank which came with
these. He has a repo horn with it.
I believe this is a really good deal and if i didn't have a real nice one
already I would be buying it. I think this is a great opportunity to buy one at
a reasonable price, if you have a desire to own one. By the way all money is
going to him I have not added anything on for my troubles.
If anyone has an interest in it please contact me off list at

THanks,

Greetings Mike:

There is no such Edison domestic Phonograph as a Model H. The only Model H
items I know of are a Model H coin operated machine and a Model H 4 minute
reproducer. You see this misidentification all the time on eBay. People think
the machine model is what is written on the reproducer tail. Triumph machines
went to a Model G, Homes to an F, Standards to a G, Gems to an E, and Firesides
to a B. Not an H among them.

Assuming your machine is a Model D Standard equipped with a Model H
reproducer and with a green painted Babson horn and crane, the eBay prices
average $400
to $600 depending on condition and horn decoration. Babson horns can go from
6 panels up to 11 panels as commonly offered on eBay. The small plain horns
do not command the prices of the largest 11 panel horns done in translucent
clear coat with hand painted flowers. TTCo horns go for a bit more depending
on
their condition and decoration. Occasionally you will see a larger brass
belled Standard Amplifying Horn painted green rather than black.

There are many variables in determining Edison machine value. You need to
supply more information for a more accurate estimate.

Is this an eBay sale? If so, give the number and knowledgeable collectors on
this learned list can give you a fairly good estimate of value.

One eBay effect is the continued lowering of prices on common cylinder
machines. My guess is that is due to a lack of decent cylinder records to
play.
There is just something uninspiring about Toots Paka's Hawaiians.

Best wishes,

Al

In the mid-1980's when I lived in California, I was in Folsom for the first
time. In the window of a closed antique shop was a Leon Scott de
Martinville Phonoautograph! I about fainted! I called the number on the
door and the proprietor came over and opened the shop for me. Also in the
shop was an S. Bergmann exhibition tinfoil! Turns out the proprietor --
Norm Solgas -- and his father built both these machines in the late 1950's
from plans provided by the Edison Historic Site. Norm's father had been a
machinist in the Navy during WW II and built them after he mustered out.
Through me, the tinfoil went to Bob Bresnick of LA, who had the flywheel
returned to more accurate dimensions provided by Ray Phillips, and had an
exact reproduction wooden base with foil drawer built for it. From there it
went to John Woodward who had a master pinstriper go over it. It was
beautiful when it was finished. I believe Woody sold it around 1990 or so.
I don't know where it -- or the replica Phonoautograph -- are today.

Another SoCal collector friend of mine who is now approaching 70, was in
Benecia in the early 1960's when he was a pup collector. There is a huge
used furniture/antique store downtown (I'm sure it is probably still in
business) that has been there for decades. He bought approximately 100 mint
Concert and Grand cylinders there for a couple dollars apiece! He said
there were several antique dressers with the drawers chock full of them. He
also said they used to have dozens of phonographs back then. Ahhh . . . the
good old days! I thought about his cylinder find every time I went in that
place.Have a great weekend all! John

HELLO AL,
THE WEST POINT HORN WAS MADE FOR THE EDIPHONE, NOT FOR THE PHONOGRAPH. IT
WAS MADE LONG AFTER THE OUTSIDE HORN CYLINDER MACHINES WERE HISTORY.
THE FROW BOOK IS WRONG AND HAS BEEN DISSEMINATING THIS FALSEHOOD ALL TO LONG.
I HAVE SAID NOTHING ABOUT THIS FOR YEARS BUT NOW SOME FOOL PAID $4600+ ON

Well, I sometimes bring a Victor 2-55 portable with me in my '29
Chevy coupe, but when I was courting my wife a mere 18 years ago, the
phonograph I brought along in the car then was a ca. 1927 Silvertone
portable with a remarkably good tone quality. When driving this car,
I play various period music on a concealed cassette player
(eventually to be updated to CD, I suppose), with 12 volts supplied
by a power inverter. Similar setup in the '50 Pontiac convertible.

In the '29, it's usually early Duke Ellington or Vaughan DeLeath and
some mixed tapes to further the illusion while driving. The '29 is
basically unrestored original, dark green with black fenders, brown
corduroy interior, with about 36,000 original miles (yes, I drive it
but just now and then, and enjoy every mile).

In the '50 it's typically Nat King Cole, Ink Spots or Les Paul Mary
Ford. The Pontiac is Rio red with beige canvas power top; all
restored from an extremely weathered but solid New Mexico
foundation. People thought I was crazy to try to restore that car
given the sad shape it was in, but just as I'm sure some of us do
with phonographs, I could see the beauty inherent in the design and
couldn't resist the opportunity to bring it out.

Photos of either can be emailed to anyone who might wish to see them.

I'd love to find one of those underdash 45 players. I've only had
one in my restoration shop over the years. No doubt they're tough on
records, but WHAT a novelty!

A century ago, brass horns were given a coat of lacquer to prevent them from
tarnishing (lacquer has been around for centuries). This was brushed on, and
when found today with original lacquer still intact, the brush strokes are
often apparent. Like others who responded to this thread, I have never seen a
century-old brass horn retaining its original lacquer and still shining like
new. The lacquer wears with handling and cleaning over the years, and the brass
begins to oxidize.

20 or 30 years ago, there was a collecting contingent who claimed that
patina (tarnished original finishes) on brass phonograph horns should be
preserved at all costs. This struck me at the time as tantamount to preserving
rust -- and neither rust nor tarnish were original equipment on phonographs!
I've been happy in observing that virtually all the advanced collections I've
seen in the past decade have featured newly polished and lacquered brass horns,
preserving them for another 100 years.

I feel I should add to George Paul's comments on lacquered brass. First of
all I am not fully knowledgeable on types of lacquer used in horns.
However, with other types of brass ware, namely scientific instruments
(microscopes, telescopes, surveying instruments, et al) the lacquer used can
and does often survive in excellent condition. Any cleaning/polishing of
this finish can and often does lead to the loss of the original finish and
can and does lower the value of the instrument, sometimes by more than half.
A shiny new looking instrument compared to one that has a respectable, yet
aged patina, is not only un-acceptable with collectors, but often shunned.

I'd like to pass on a story that happened when I was the scientific and
mechanical music specialist at Christie's in London. A couple brought in a
very important early brass quadrant (17th century if my memory serves me
right). They knew nothing about it, having found it in the attic of a
deceased relatives home. We explained that it was not only valuable, but
quite important historically, and that it would fetch 10s of thousands of
pounds. They wanted to think about it over the weekend and left. Sure
enough on Monday morning they returned wanting to consign it. But, thinking
they knew best, they had gotten the brass cleaner out and polished the hell
out of it, thus slashing the value down by many, many thousands.

As George says, 20-30 years ago a tarnished horn was more accepted than a
re-polished horn and that has now changed. However, who is to say in a few
years it won't revert to the old way. Also, think about how aged looking
it is. Is the brass as black as can be or is it just a slightly darkened
brass? Patina is important to many collectors and once lost can not be
replaced.

Some phonograph horns do darken considerably due to the loss of the lacquer
and especially due to the polishing off of the lacquer. The reason for the
lacquer was not only protection of the metal itself but to keep from having
to polish the brass.

So, the point of my message is this: before polishing brass of any type
decide for yourself if it really is too far gone or if you may not keep the
machine the rest of your life.

Best to all,
George Glastris

I was 12 years old when I got my first old phonograph. This was in
1974, and the machine, which I paid for with lawn-mowing earnings and
a Morgan silver dollar was a lowly Berg-Artone suitcase style
portable. It had a broken governor, damaged diaphragm, very black
greasy motor etc., but it also was my first phonograph repair
teacher, in a manner of speaking. I used to drag any willing adult
into my world just long enough to play the machine for them. This
was often as not met with the comment It's amazing that it still
works, followed by my boring them with the details of the work it
needed and the repairs I carried out. I used to think it a trick
question when they asked how I knew what to do, and was always at a
loss as to what to answer. It was only later that I came to realize
that not all people understand a mechanism when they see it, or how
to go about putting it in order. Admittedly, at 12 years old my
approach was creative when it came to repair materials, but at least
the methods worked. It was a great discovery some years later when I
learned that there were real live companies devoted to selling parts
for repairing phonographs.

I don't know when my interest in this subject began, but it was
certainly in place by the time I was eight or nine.

I just purchased a photograph from eBay, circa 1917 or so.

http://www.littlewonderrecords.com/East%20Texas%20girl.jpg

The buyer thinks it was taken in east Texas. I bought it because of the
Bubble Book that's on the floor. Thought I'd share it here because of
the phonograph that's on the desk.

The photograph wasn't very expensive, so I doubt it's a fake, but if
anyone knows something that would hint otherwise I'd sure appreciate the
information, or anything else anyone might know about it.

still have the pictures, and I am sure glad those guys helped me out. Ray, I
have to agree with Merle. The Little Wonder came with a crank. A simple
little crank with a crimp in the end that slides into the machine, It has a
simple little straight black barrel on other end where you grip the crank. I
really do still have the pictures if anyone needs them. Thanks to Jerry, and

Thanks, Merle and Fred for the info. However, if you look at the photo of
the Little Wonder on p. 192 of Reiss' book, you will see the machine with a
KEY, rather than a crank. Is it possible that the key on this L.W. from the
Walter Bellm collection is a repro? If so, why wouldn't a repro crank been
used? I am not sure this matter has been settled.

Oh no Ray, I sure hope you are wrong I've been looking for one of those
little cranks for almost three years, I finally found one among the odds,
and ends of another collector. When I started looking for it in March, 2001
Jerry Blais, and Doug miller both sent me photocopies of the cranks with
their machines. I still have the pictures, and I am sure glad those guys
helped me out. Ray, I have to agree with Merle. The Little Wonder came
with a crank. A simple little crank with a crimp in the end that slides
into the machine, It has a simple little straight black barrel on other end
where you grip the crank. I really do still have the pictures if anyone
needs them. Thanks to Jerry, and Doug.

[Phono-L] Union Show and Sale

2006-12-24 Thread zonophone2...@aol.com
hi all
I enjoyed the show.
Many nice machines were there and some early record boxes.
i saw two glass sided zonophones and i bought one of the two grand opera
zonophones that were available there.
The only sad note was bill landon lost a screw down on a berliner and the
next day the same guy came back it seems for the reproducer.
Its pretty sick when you have to do that to a dealer.
The first day on Thursday was a little hectic as there was some disagreement
on people coming into the parking lot to sell or buy who didn't have a
table, so to be fair mike and randy let anyone who was there pay the dealer
price
to sell or buy. This was only $150 for two people which is more than fair to
all.
I for one hate to see the dealers pay for space and others come in to sell
who pay nothing.
The oliphants again had many nice items to buy also as well as charlie
hummel.
i was not there on Sunday but was Thursday afternoon thru Saturday night.
also jasper was very cordial to us all as usual.

Sorry for this additional post but, based on a few emails I got I wanted to
clarify two things:

1. PLEASE use stevenr...@aol.com as the address to request the books. Do not
use this address.

2. Though I directed the offer to US Collectors, I'm not limiting it to US
collectors. Canadadians who want the book or coasters or bookmarks or postcards
can probably save some having me ship them as well. The shipping cost will
just be more than that to US buyers.

And, of course I'll ship anywhere anyone wants.

Note that I'll be at ARSC Conference beginning Tuesday through Sunday and
will answer any mail during that time, upon my return.

Thanks!

I use a shoe brush to clean dirty cylinders, I purchased it for that
purpose. I brush the same way the grooves go and it works very well. I
would never use anything that may hurt a record, who knows what the future
damage may be as a result of chemicals or petroleum distillates on wax
records?

Steve

It's not a mold, but rather a fungus. It pits the surface of the cylinder
so the recording is destroyed even if the mold could be removed. Black wax
is actually a metallic soap compound, not just wax (although it contains a
couple of wax compounds). I've never exposed a cylinder to gasoline or the
like, but I imagine it would be incredibly destructive to the cylinder,
particularly the delicate grooves. When I have picked up cylinders with
'moldy' spots, I have applied Mycotin brand anti-fungal in sparing amounts
with a cotton swab to the affected areas. I have never seen the spots go
away, but my hope is to kill the fungus and stop the spread. Cylinder boxes
containing moldy cylinders are also contaminated and should not be re-used
for good cylinders for obvious reasons. John M

My wife's aunt has an old Starr phonograph that was manufactured in
Richmond, Indiana. It has a beautiful wood horn mounted inside the cabinet
with the logo inside that reads: Silver Grain Spruce - The Singing Throat of
the Starr phonograph. To the left of the horn are 5 drawers labeled A - E
that I guess were for record storage. There is a metal plate that is
mounted in front of the horn with the number 81952 which might be the serial
number. I have pictures I can send if anyone will e-mail me. She wanted to
know if anyone had an idea of its value etc.

Keith,

I believe this is a Columbia horn as the Edison just has the ring. 48
inches is the longest horn I have heard of, but $900 is too much.

Steve

I'm not much on trying to explain what it looked like, but it was something
like a heavy wire in brass with 3 half loops where you can attach the crane
in any of the hoops.
That's about as close as I can describe it.
keith

I went to a large Antique Mall that had many dealers yesterday and found an
Edison Concert All Brass Horn.
I want to know what is the price these usually go for.
The Dealer was asking $900.00 for it.
The horn is about 5 foot to 5 ? foot long with a Bell of about 2 ? foot wide
( well, pretty wide anyway).
I really didn't measure it for exact measurements.
The horn is in perfect condition.
What do these usually go for?
Thanks,
Keith

[Phono-L] Union Disappointment

2006-12-24 Thread zonophone2...@aol.com
hi all
no disapointment here either
there were less parts but better machines to choose from.
record wise lots of great deals there too.
i got a great deal on a victor jr and picked up a edison suitcase home with a
2000 serial number for only 400.
the quality was up with all the machines one dealer brought to sell from a
major collector.
and the best part of union is the comradery of old friends and jaspers
collections
kudos to randy and mike for putting on another great show

I must agree with the other favorable comments regarding the Union show. For
me it was an unbelievable opportunity to see and even purchase several
desirable and rare phonographs. Prices were definitely not cheap but in line
with going rates.

I find this show the highlight of my collecting experience. I cannot wait for
next years show!

PS. I am sure there are people who actually LIKE 90F and 85% humidity (and the
associated mosquitoes). For them I am sure the weather was absolutely perfect.

I also have to say this was the best Union show I have attended. This was my
5th year in a row and I found that the energy at the show was the best I had
ever seen and machine quality and quantity were up considerably. While I
paid a premium price for the Columbia BFT with a wood horn, it's amoung the
nicest machines I own. The quality of the machines was very high and
provided the chance to get nice quality machines. I'm not personally into
fixer uper machines because I don't have the time to work on them. I look
for nice machines ready for my collection. I saw phonographs there I would
be suprised to ever see for sale in one place ever again. I will go back
year after year and already wish it were time for next year! Dan

Hi Al,

I agree. Did you rebuild the S on your F?

Steve

By all means get the word out that such a nice condition rare machine is
 up
for eBay auction. I have purchased a number of items that were mentioned
 on
Phono-L when I have missed them on the eBay search. Posting on Phono-L
 has the
added advantage of getting to some very serious collectors first and they
 can
run to check their bank balances though some of us have plenty of money
 and
 nothing left to collect.;-)

The Model F Standard on page 129 of The Edison Cylinder Companion and page
 61
of the Frow Sefl book is my machine. The larger diaphragm of a properly
rebuilt S Reproducer has a great sound with the Cygnet horn. If you are
 going
to have just one Edison Standard in your collection, this one is it!

Best wishes to all on the list, may all your finds be rare ones,

 Al
