Please keep all BBCiplayer post related to 1.6 and later onto one thread
which relates to current releases - instead of using this ancient one.

2018-12-02 Thread bpa

I've done a small update to BBCiPlayer & BBCiPlayerExtras - it should
appear to anyone using the BBCiPlayer repo
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/betarelease-repo.xml

Nothing will change for users of other repos.

Please do not post anymore to this thead.

New post to this thread

I don't think I can do anything about this. The URL is a BBC WebUI URL
just with a JSON request - the following should work in a browser for a
"norma" display
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/a-z/by/k/player

What version of LMS are you using ? https handling has been gradually
improved in 7.9.1 and 7.9.2

I get this error on every letter on every station - nothing at all works
for me on the BBCiPlayerExtra.

And in terms of 'special' setup, I have nothing unusual - straight
broadband connection, albeit I'm in Australia. Doesn't matter what time
of day and how long I leave it in between attempts - same error every

My thoughts from observation of the similar previous events and are just
my guesses.
* The BBCiPlayer feed is "refreshed " about 4 times a day from a
database which has changed since it was setup so extra shim layers have
been added making is less reliable than original implementation.
* The Web UI is up to date with "Listen Again" program within a very
short time of a program been broadcast so the BBCiPlayer feed is a
"secondary" feed.
* These problems show up when a program has been changed/edited after it
has appeared in "Listen Again" for example - end of program cut off,
events since broadcast make some parts inappropriate, legal threats
(e.g. News Quiz). I think when a program is edited - it takes a while
for changes in PID to migrate into older feeds and may now need manual
help.
* The Web UI gets the new version immeditalely by BBCiPlayer feed get
correct sometimes within 24 hrs but other times 2-3 days (Weekdend ?).
* The "Programmes" API ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes ) has been
effectively been rebranded as "Sounds" - it seems to be a bit of window
dressing - lets users download programms as part of new BBC Sounds
approach "personalise" etrc. It also gets around BBC promise to shut
down Programmes API

The link is correct and works OK for me. What happens is BBC load
balancing newtwork requests and you hit a bad time where redirection of
the URL (i.e. to a different server) exceeded LMS redirection limit.
Furthermore, LMS caches the failures so if you keep trying - LMS will
just used the cached error and will keep doing so if you keep trying
every couple of minutes - as it will refresh the cache timer. Wait at
least 30 mins or stop LMS, clear HTTP cache and restart LMS.

Do you get the error with any other letter ?

"Special" network setups such as VPNs, smartDNS etc can also influence
this sort of behaviour

Looks to be a BBC problem with the 5 live feed - the URL they provide in
the feed gives a 404 error (i.e.does nto exoist at BBC end). Plugin can
do nothing with bad info from BBC.,

On LMS the BBCiPlayerExtra (which takes info from a different feed -
same as BBC web interface ) plays the Kermode program OK.

Not sure if this is a problem unique to me or if it's affecting others
too? For the most part everything is working fine on my setup but there
seem to be a limited number of listen again programs that refuse to play
- when I click them they show "connecting" and then nothing happens.
Most notably I see this on the Kermode and Mayo program and Fighting
Talk, both on 5 Live. I can access both streams using the BBC Sounds web
page but no luck via LMS.

I'm located outside the UK but that hasn't affected listening to these
programs in the past but we've not been able to access either of these

glitch. Is anybody else experiencing issues with these programs or are
there any suggestions as to why they may be particular troublesome
whilst the majority of other programs play perfectly?

Listen Again in HLS format seems to be restricted - as a non-UK user I
get "403" for Listen Again program in HLS format. DASH still works OK.

This may be
* a UK vs non-UK change
or
* a gradual move away from HLS as BBC previously announced
or
* it could be a temporary glitch

Plugin cannot do anything about this except advise to set "DASH" as the
first preferred format in Settings.

I think you have hit on the problem. The Soma pls doesn't work and nor
does an example AAC that I downloaded.

At the risk of heading off topic, is there a fix to get the Classic &
Duet transcoding the AAC again? It worked before the holiday and it
worked on earlier Debians/OMV and LMS. I shall post elsewhere if
appropriate.

Thanks for the help so far.

If Radio works and Classic & Touch doesn't but MP3 stream play OK then
the problem is probably AAC transcoding.

Can you play the following AAC stream on Classic -
http://www.somafm.com/illstreet64.pls

If the stream doesn't play on Classic or Duet - then the issue is not
BBCiplayer plugin specific.

Thanks for the speedy responses. I think your feeling could be right.
I use my Classic 90% of the time and that has the issue. It gives
"Stopped" on the first Play press, and "Item not found" or similar on
subsequent presses. I tried the Duet and it behaves exactly as the
Classic, i.e. only playing mp3.

However, the Radio behaves exactly as it should, playing all versions of
Listen Again.

I have done nothing to the system, I went on holiday on 16th and all was
well. I got back last night and the Classic wasn't working.

For the record I did upgrade the OS a week before the holiday and
reinstalled LMS. However, as above, LMS was working fine on the new
installation.

Any idea what could be happening and, more importantly, how I fix it?

Ignore Extra issues - it needs BBCiPlayer to be working.

All working for me with 1.6 - LIve both DASH and HLS , Live. Listen
Again only DASH.

It "feels" like an issue with your installation.
What type of player ? Could there be a transcoding issue ?
Any OS update since 16th Nov ?

I have a fix for the HLS Listen Again but I just need to package to get
it out - but this shouldn't affect "Live".

Don't think this is the issue. The HLS problem in Oct was with Listen
Again not with Live - did something happen with live HLS ?

Ensure you have Dash before HLS in the iPlayer plugin settings, there
has been an HLS format change by the BBC that the plugin does not
support. That said, I thought the problem was isolated to live streams.

I am just back from holiday and the only bit of the iPlayer plugin that

I'm with Mr PasTim, I just want to be able to open the BBCiPlayer Plugin
and access the shows i'd like to listen to, Amazon is constantly
suggesting products and CDs i'd like to buy and it gets on my nerves a

Look at contents of BBC Sounds website Categories - AFAICT most of the
program are broadcast but some are from local readio and World Service -
you can find many of them already in BBCiPlayerExtra - "A-Z All
stations" or in "Latest by Category"

AFAICT BBC Sounds is repackaging of BBC Podcasts + BBCiPlayer Radio with
specially comissioned podcasts for new material rather than just
broadcast material.
It may also include personalisation.

BBCiPlayer won't change as it is broadcast material.
BBciplayer will not do personalisation.
For the new/other podcast material - tihink there are outher feeds
already available.

Thanks guys , well I'll just keep listening to my Squeezebox BBC player
while I can. I have half a dozen Squeezeboxes and Raspberries about the
house and enjoy having them all synced and playing the BBC on Saturday
mornings while doing the chores ( my wife thinks I'm a bit dotty). Radio
Four Friday night comedy, Bells on Sunday, The Shipping Forecast, BBC 2
Folk Show and of course the wonderful Six Music, I'd be lost without
them :)

interestingly this statement is made in the BBC SOUNDS FAQ to a
question about using BBC SOUNDS on an internet radio:

Can I use BBC Sounds on my internet radio device?
If you're listening via an internet radio device you should be able to
listen to live BBC radio stations and access podcasts. *Full on-demand
programmes (i.e. programmes which* *have already been broadcast) are not
available on internet radio*; you'll need to access these either via a
web browser or mobile/tablet app.

Hello

Sorry I was not sure where to ask this question but BBC 6 Music has been
announcing a new app called BBC Sounds these past two weeks. I had a
quick nose in iTunes but it is not available over here in the Great

anything about it and more importantly is it going to impact the
Squeezebox BBCiplayer plug in ?

Many thanks

The BBC quickly reverted the 30 days history to 7 days. It was on this
thread or another one a few weeks back. So no point loading a different
menu.

If you want 30 day history use iPlayerExtras plugin (which requires
iPlayer plugin to work).

Picoreplayer uses Jiveplay (mainly the same as Radio/Touch) - Home
should have been enough (digital clock is just a screen saver - Jiveplay
is still running) but not what what Jiveplay caches. Waiting a while is
generally a good thing - it allows for caches to expire. It's why so
many things start working properly the next day.

What sort of player ? SB3 shouldn't need power off but a Touch/Radio
might as menu handling is a bit different and it mightn't recognise the

I mean that, even after going back to Home on the player, the player
still only showed 7 days, whereas the menu in the LMS web browser menu
showed 30 days.

But, after switching off the player, leaving it for a bit (while I ate

It doesn't change becuase users requested to have the default menu URL
shown so they can change back. After a load check the BBCiPlayer menus
but only after going to home and rentern BBciPlayer menu.

Unfortunately this very old thread (which techically still refers to the
Triode's 1.3 plugin) has come alive (along with about 3 others) when all
this 1.6 detail has already been posted on other threads (see
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?106409-BBCiPlayer-V1-5-2-beta-test=920987=1#post920987
).

The menu.opml files is located in the BBCiPlayer plugin directory. This
diectory is in different places on different OSs. the Setting "load "
button is an easy way to copy a file either local (use file:// ) or
netrworked (use http://)

The examples at the moment are:

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/default-30-day-menu.opml

There is a lot more flexibility that just 7, 15 and 30 day for all
statiuon but requires editing the menu.opml file.

SuffolkPunch is probably using the term "listen again" to distinguish it
from "listen live".

There is now an option for the iPlayer menus to display 7,15, or 30 days
worth of programmes.

UNder each station there are days of the week with a date. In that
mnenu there is a list of program by scheduled time - you can play any of
them - so you can listen to 6 O'clock news from 1-Sept

After the days of the week there are the Porgramnames - click on a
program names and you will get a list of the epsiodes of that program
that are available to play - so you could binge play all episodes of
"Book at Bedtime".

Also with a Listen Again program say a daytime chat show Radio or a 3
hours concert - you can jump to specific segement which are indexed - so
you can listen to the parts of the show which interestes you.

don't refer to 'Listen Again' anywhere, but SuffolkPunch refers to "In

Thanks to bpa for reviving Listen Again!

I see one issue - hope someone can help? In LMS, when I click on
'Listen Again BBC radio 4 FM' LMS shows a page without the usual lists
of dates etc. instead the page displays

The same thing also happens for Listen Again for BBC radio 2.

All other Listen Again stations (e.g. radio 3) work.

This is one of several reasons I run LMS on Windows. I don't want the
hassle of having to sort out Perl versions on the system each time I
update LMS or the iPlayer plugin. That's the sort of thing installers
are supposed to handle automatically in my view. There may be good
reasons it can't be sorted out, but it is still a failing somewhere in
my view.

Later today, I'll start up a new BBCiPlayer thread and then ask michael

A side effect of this problem is that it provide a better estimate of
the "Listen Again" user base - about 950 download of V1.6 in 2 days.

7.8 handles some https but as different instances of it appears, more
fixes to handle https have been applied right up to 7.9.1

Just as important is the version of Perl as some versions of supporting
Perl module for SSL do not cater for all versions of TLS and AFAICT BBC
do not support SSL2 or SSL3. Perl Version is not an issue with Windows
system as Perl and associated updated Perl modules are all bundled in

I rather suspected it might be a bit more complicated. People with the
old perl will just have to move on once their systems stop working.

2018-09-18 Thread Owen Smith

There is no working old iPlayer plugin version 1.3, users have to
manually apply about 3 patches to the file. I know mherger moved the
repo for the old 1.3 as the previous ones stopped working. But even with
the newer repo I'm not sure bpa can put out an iPlayer 1.3, it was
Triodes and maybe only he can issue a new one or maybe now only mherger
can (I'm not sure what the restrictions are).

In addition to which, I suspect bpa doesn't want to be responsible for
merging all the 1.3 patches and issuing an updated 1.3 and then dealing
with the support problems as they arise.

Better in my view to let 1.3 wither on the vine and do no work about it.
What I was asking is if it had already completely withered, but if live
play still works I guess not.

Life is not so simple.

I've tested Extra on 7.7.3 with Perl 5.22 and it worked OK - so I think
1.6 should run as well. However BBC redirects a lots of http URLS to
https (e.g. for metadata) and AFAICT BBC only support TLS 1.0 as a
minimum - not SSL2 or SSL3. Also AFAICT the Perl 5.14.2 SSL/TLS
support modules as shipped with 5.14.2 do not support TLS 1.0 only
SSL2/3. The oldest Perl support that "ships" with 7.7.3 is 5.16. So
although 1.6 may run with 7.7.3 - it is likely a user who started with a
7.7.3 installation has a version of Perl older than 5.14 and also their
associated Linux distro doesn't have a build later than 5.14.

The xml files have no provision for minimum Perl version.

That's a hard choice. From the posts I've seen LMS 7.7.3 or thereabouts
still seems quite common - would that need to be updated? How old is
iplayer 1.3? Will 1.6 run on 7.7.3?

There comes a time for all software users when they have to move with
the times. I'd suggest 3 years stability is acceptable (others may
disagree), but after that one should not be surprised when you have to
move on. (I keep very up to date, but that's my choice).

I guess the alternative is to provide 2 versions, one for older systems

I was thinking the same but I am afraid of forcing people - if I
underestimate how many are using 1.3, I could end up with a lot of work
as usually with old system other things break in succession (e.g. need
to upgrade LMS and then upgrade Perl because of SSL library etc then
need to upgrade distro)

I was wondering if now was the time to change the default iPlayer plugin
repo in LMS if the "pre bpa" versions had stopped working completely.
But if playing live using HLS still works (with plugin patches) then I
guess not, there will be some people that only play live radio.

A bit slow to the party - this problem started last week and eventually
has been solved. Since you posted on this thread you may have a very
old version.
You need to upgrade to V1.6.0
If you have V.1.5.* - you should already be notified of the update in
Plugins tab
If you have V.1.4.* you're best to remove 1.4 and change the repo URL
If you have V.1.3 - you're best to remove 1.3 and add the new repo URL.

The repo URL to use is
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/betarelease-repo.xml

Hello, I have just started getting 404 errors from the iPlayer plug in
when choosing stations from the main menu.. The one with 'Listen Live'
at the top. I can drill into the lower levels OK, but the main stations

What about the Favorite entry extracted from the favorites OPML file ?
It would show if there is something "odd" included as that is the only
way the display is going to be affected - the plugin has nothing to do
with Favorites.

It doesnt change using the Chrome kiosk style window I use, I can
maximise the window to full screen and change the font bigger/smaller,
same result. It works fine though on orangesqueeze the Android app I
use. It's no big deal, and much more useful to have the favorite that it
is to have the text wrap in the wrong place.

It looks like text wraparound as the font is too big for the narrow
panes and possibly a couple of lines of text have a lot of spaces.

Does the problem change if you widen the browser windows or use smaller
font, then clear browser cache and reload.

What does the "offending" entry look like (i.e. the outline) when you
examine then entry in the prefs/favorites.opml file

Internet error codes beginning with 5 are all from the destination
server and nothing to to do with the source unless the URL is
incorrect.

In this case for some reason the LMS squeezboxc network is returing an
error - nothing to do the iplayer plugin. As the destination URL is
working for me and I guess others.

I suggest:
1. Check all the additional repository URLs you have entered in your
Plugins tabs are correct
2. Restart your router and LMS in case there is some sort of bad data.

FYI, just to followup on this. I tool the URI from above an posted it
directly in my LMS as the first entry in the LMS favorites. While it
messes up the formatting on the LMS browser UI on Chrome, as a favorite
it's worked perfectly since I added it. I select it, it brings up todays
TODAY iplayer list for BBC London. I select the program I want and it
starts.

I'll just hope it keeps working. Thanks for a great idea, and an even
better plugin.

That's the biggest obvious benefit of Dash. HLS provides catchup at
128kbps max. Dash also makes less onerous demands on your broadband,
especially for DNS lookups.

I have two choices.
1. Post to existing thread
2. Create a new thread.

If I create a new thread - people will still post to the old ones - so
there is less chance of finding anything and more confusion.

Use of Flac was by definition "bleeding" edge as it was part of BBC
Taster - if you want to test you must pay attention. I implemented it
(and segment times) as part of a user request. I try to make it as
easy as possible. The flac stream is ONLY on the "Radio 3 Flac menu"
> I still don't know which of the two repos I mentioned is the 'right'

I don't know what is "right" for you - do you want "stable" or "latest
version to be tested" such as Flac ? Some people wanted "Flac" so the
"right" one is the version with "Flac support" even though it is being
tested.

There is only and only ONE repo for stable DASH. It will always deliver
the latest stable version - it was 1.5.2 and it isnow 1.5.3 and will be
1.5.x in the future. It will NOT deliver a version that is "fresh" or
experimental or has not been used by a few other users.

> I don't even know if HLS still works, since DASH is still test, or did I
> miss something?
I don't know whether HLS works either - as I said frequently I do not
support HLS - this branch of the plugin is about supporting DASH and I
have no non LMS way to test BBC HLS (I have no iPhone or iPad).

If you want just use the same URL I gave at the start of the 1.5.2
thread. This way life is simple for you.

If you want "latest" / "bleeding" / "may break" then use the other URLs
I post from time to time but they will disappear as a new version appear
and so you have to pay attention - which means following threads and
reading posts. I cannot test for UK users or OSX or Win10 so I must
publicise latest versions to get a small group of testers with a spread
of systems.

There are many hundreds of posts on iplayer, and they are hard to
search. The ends of threads quickly become the middle, and I for one
get lost. Many of us wanted to use flac when it was available, and I'm
unsure whether I lose anything, apart from the now non-existent flac

Yes and I keep answering - the following are just the last few weeks but
I know I post this regularly..

The trouble is people want to run the latest test version which I only
want a limited number of users to test specific features and so I do not
put the URL on the top page as they are transient. But some users just
read the end of a thread (which is the most active) and so find these
transient URLs.

bpa - I'm not blaming anyone, especially you who does so much for the
rest of us. It's just that there are a lot of threads on the topic.
It's all been 'test' of some form for a very long time, or so it seems
to me.

As far as I can see, the DASH 1st post says use
"http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/repo-short.xml;
The 1.5.2 thread 1st post says use
"http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/betarelease-repo.xml;
I can't now find the bleeding edge posts

I may have lost my marbles.

Maybe Michael could let you place a small edit at the start of the
original iPlayer thread? Or maybe he could implement something to make
threads defunct?

For some of us, possibly of a certain age (and in my case with a limited
memory), it's getting hard. You may have noticed quite a number of
people asking for similar information.

To be honest, even though I try to follow all the iplayer threads, I
have little idea which is the correct latest (test) repo. I'm currently
on
"http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/V154ftestrelease-repo.xml;,
whikch was the last flac version I used (I know flac has now gone, for
now at least). Searching for this information is not easy (I've been
trying and failing for 15 minutes so far).

Is there any way you can keep an up-to-date 1st post on this thread, or
the 1.5.2 test thread (or is there another one?), summarising the
versions (if more then one).

Sorry for being so dim, but whilst it may be obvious to many, for some
of us it isn't.

It was in the LMS Control Panel, in the Alerts section that I noticed
it. It said something like "we have noticed that you are running a Proxy
Server..."
You're right that you can't control it there, so I went to LMS Settings
- Advanced - Network, and removed the entries that were there.
I'll try and remember to stop LMS while I'm running the VPN in future -
in any event, if it happens again I now know what to do.
Thanks for your time...

LMS does not expect network setup to change when it is running. So if
you start a VPN while LMS is running , or stop a VPN which was running
when LMS was started - it will cause problems. I'd advise stopping LMS
when playing around with the VPN. Also BBC has VPN detectors so you may
get strange problems when using BBCiPlayer due toi BBC (who use CDNS
such as akamai).

Which control panel LMS Control Panel or Windows Conrl PAnel - I don;t
use Windows LMS that often but I can;t see a setting for Proxy in the
LMS Control Panel Windows

AFAIK Settings in a Windows control panel will not get "inserted" into
LMS setting - except for items such as IP address which are really just
a copy taken at LMS startup. Proxy acting at Windows level should be
invisible to LMS - if not then it is a bad proxy.

Uninstalling and reinstalling s/w will do nothing. The plugin code
saves nothing ansd reloads everything each time BBCiPlayer menu is
entered. LMS gets details at startup. Your probelm may be related to
caches. There are LMS caches and can be cleared using the LMS Control
Panel Adfbaced Tab - Cleanup section. Stop LMS and Clear the cache
rather than uninstall.

Some Windows setups used to have very aggressive caching which could
keep "bad" information for days - serving it up days after a problem has
gone away. Not sure about Win10. Try clearing the Windows DNS cache from
command prompt "ipconfig /flushdns" as it might be holding bad data.

Thanks for that. I will look at 1, 2, 3. I think I know what caused 4
and 5.

In messing around I noticed in the Control Panel that I had a Proxy
Server set, which is wrong, I don't use a Proxy Server, but there were
settings in there, which I had not entered. Weird. I cleared the
settings, then the repository worked, reinstalled iPlayer Plugin and
then BBC streams worked.

The only thing I can think of is that I occasionally use a VPN on the
server PC to watch US-based movies, and sometimes I forget to reset it.
Could that cause these entries to be inserted into the LMS settings?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayer Plugin (UK only)

2017-10-02 Thread bpa

You have lots of different problems - which I think are interacting and
makign things worse.

1. You seem to pause a player when playing BBCiplayer live streams -
this will cause the "estimated delay" messages. This pause may be due
to a player setting "Pause on Power off". BBC does not allow pauses
longer than 3 hours. To get rid of this issues change the player
setting to "Stop on Power off"
2. The database seems to be corrupt or not setup properly - I'd advise
"clear and rescan everyhting".
3. Youtub plugin has some problems - don't use when trying to solve
this probem - oif the file descrpitpopgoies away then you'll know it is
Youtube
4. There are a number of http 500 errors - in theory these are
destination problems and nothing to do with your system but they seem t
come from timeservers - so I suspect there is something messing with
your network stack - what security s/w are you using ?
5. There are number of long dealys from BBC - this means you ISP
connection is not great. What is your local network setup I hope LMS is
not on a wireless connection ?

The above is a first pass but until you address some of these issues -
the real problem will not become clear.
