Hello,

into exactly what Phillip described. They also test the vulnerability of
your computer/network to attacks from the outside. I have used Shields Up
to check my computer and the network at work each time I installed or
changed network equipment or software.
The major topics of this site are; Shields UP! Home, Explain this to

Not to start up this thread all over again, but you may find this

Can you provide a brief explanation of what the site contains? Our Net
Security folks are quite prude about where they allow us to go, and the
above title contains one word that will surely trigger the WebCensor.

FWIW, a brief explanation might allow those of us who are under such terms
of usage to send appropriate email to the local SysAdmin for subsequent
cancelation of the automatic webblock for sites containing certain topical
words in their definitions...If you know what I mean?

Thanks,

Howdy,

I do not know if any of the higher priced packages accomplish this check. I do know
that even Allegro's Autosilk function does not correctly or always prevent text on
pads. Valor does check for these violations, though it may not be an economical
solution.

Out of luck I think - there is no possibility using the current set of
design rules (from memory). I was asked about this some time ago and spent
a little time looking at it but I can't even remember where we got to. I
know I am still doing it with a visual check so I guess I did not work out
 a better way.

I would certainly like a better solution. A server could be written to do
the check but there is absolutely no incentive in writing such servers
unless you have lots of free time or your company will pay you to do it.

There may be some combination layer colours and Transparent layer
colouring that would show up violations clearly but this does not do much
for mis-registration (there is no clearance parameter).

I know that some of the CAM packages can do an overlay/silkscreen cut to
prevent text on pads but I do not know if Camtastic has such a checking
 function.

A design rule would be nice.

Re: [PEDA] PROTEL TO ORCAD CAPTURE

2001-12-10 Thread Andrew W. Riley III

Hello,

Protel exports the older SDT version of OrCAD. More unfortunate is that Protel does
not export the parts you need. Therefore, Protel does not export to OrCAD at all.

When you open an SCH file, OrCAD looks for the SDT.CFG file to find where the parts
are located for the SDT schematics. Without these parts, only the wires make it
through.
You should have an SDT.CFG file in the 'samples' directory of the OrCAD installation.

The process may not be worth your time. However, if you still wish to tackle the
import, I will do what I can and my time allows.

Cheers!

Re: [PEDA] Starting out with Protel99, Questions

2001-12-09 Thread Andrew W. Riley III

Howdy,

   1) Is there a standard or rule of thub that can be applied to the
seperation for a split plane ?

I use a 50mil separation everywhere I can unless there are rails over +/-12. If the
difference in voltage of the split planes next to each other is over 25V I try to use
a separation of 100mils. This is an imperical method and may not be practical in all
applications.

   2) For plated pads and vias, is hole size in layout before or
 after
plating. ie if i set hole size to be 50mil, will it compensate for

fact hole will be plated and compensate drill size so hole is
 50mil
   after plating?

It can. I specify Finished Hole Size in the drill chart on the fab drawing, and I
have never had any problems from doing so. If memory serves, the Copper Connection
advises against against what I just wrote.

   3) Is there a standard or rule of thumb for dimensions of pad in
relation to hole size ? From most of the library components I
 looked
at, it seems hole is about 2/3 pad size.

I use a pad 20mil over drill (10mil annular) for pins unless otherwise specified or
impractical.

   4) Is there a standard via size/sizes ?

I use an 11mil drill and a 25mil pad due to the board houses my customers use. When I
need to get a 5mil trace between the pads of a fine pitch BGA, I use a 24mil pad.

   5) For a given size diameter component lead is there a guidline
 for
   hole size ?

For round leads, I like to use 10mil hole over the lead size.

   6) for a component with square pins, .025mil (+- .005) mil on a
 side,
I was going to use pads of diameter 80, hole 52. This sound
   reasonable.

For square leads, I like to use 5 over diagonal. Pythagorean's theorum is a^2 + b^2 =
c^2.

 |\
a| \
 | \c
 | \
 -
   b

To find the diagonal of a right triangle, c = square root of (a^2 + b^2).

   7) For a thick track, say 30mil to 50mil, is it normal to use
 multple
   small vias ?

Absolutely. I prefer to use multiple small vias rather than one large via for most
designs.

   Any other pointers welcome.

   Any help greatly appreciated.

To save my customer money in the fabrication of the board, I will combine hole sizes
within 2mils of each other, except for press-fit or other critical applications.

The aspect ratio of drill hole to board thickness is a very important issue and can
greatly affect the cost of the design. A hole size that is ten times smaller than the
thickness of the board may affect the cost of the board more than any benefits gained.
Try to stay at or under 8:1.

Cheers!
Drew

Jeff,

I agree with everything John states below. It is well written and good advice.
Also consider the smallest drill to board thickness, a.k.a. aspect ratio, that will
change the price of building your design at the board house. A related issue is the
count of different sized holes made by your design.

 Jeff:

First step for a question like this should be your board house. They
should be able to tell you right off the bat whether there will be
any impact on their yield (read: cost to you) with the lower annular
 ring.

Another alternative would be to drop your trace widths and clearances.
9/9 is very generous - most board shops will do at least 8/8 with no
cost penalty, while 6/6 is also not unusual for high performance shops
without yields suffering (bleeding edge at 4/4 and below is another
 story...).

As an example, one of my local (ordinary quality) board shops has a standard
set of design rules (i.e. high yield expectations) that include:
 0.15mm (0.006) track width
 0.15mm (0.006) tack spacing
 0.25mm (0.010) annular ring

With this shop, I regularly do 0.175mm (0.007) annular rings (by mutual
agreement), and with a consequent yield impact (i.e. I'm happy to pay
 the extra cost).

If you do drop your annular ring below the board shop's accepted standard,
then you should restrict the use of these pads/vias to only the locations
necessary. The more instances of exceptions to rules that exist on the
board, the higher statistical probability of a board failing in mfr.

Remember that the principal reason for min. annular ring specifications
is to guard against drill breakout. There are alternative design techniques
that can allow you to shrink the annular ring, by allowing controlled
breakouts (usually on interior layers) without sacrificing board
performance. For example, teardropping to a pad provides a guard against
breakout on the side of the connection. (If you use this or other
techniques you'll need to give your board shop explicit permission to
 allow breakouts)

 Hope this helps,

 John Haddy

Ivan,

My reply is regarding your experience with eCapture stated in the second to last
paragraph of your post included at the end of my e-mail.

I come from the extreme sides of both loving and hating OrCAD for what it is. The two
and only problems I experience when importing SDT III files into Capture v9.x are
because of an incorrect or nonexistent SDT INI file and missing symbols.
If you think that my experience or the 'e' version of Capture is your problem and I
can help further, I will do one conversion from SDT to 9.2 for free, even if one is
all I do.
I am experiencing a three month itch, and I want to keep in shape.

I have a few thoughts on file conversions that might be of help. Of course,
this probably won't help you with your problem now. But going forward into
 the future, it might.

Rule #1: NEVER get rid of your old CAD program software. Keep the original
media and make a backup copy every 2-4 years or so. This goes for the OS it
 runs on, too.

Rule #2: If someone wants to clean house and get rid of old software, see
rule #1. If your company leases vault space, you might consider putting
software in it to prevent it being thrown out.

Rule #3: Save some non-native format versions of your CAD files. For
example, a Protel SCH should be saved also as a ASCII file, a DXF, and a
PDF. That way you can at least print a fresh copy when the old ones have
 been worn out or lost.

Rule #4: For any current (still shipping) designs that you may want to
revise, bring your CAD data forward into the latest
Protel version. But DO NOT delete your old Protel version CAD files.

Rule #5: Make new archival copies of CAD data every 2-4 years on whatever
the current media is (yesterday floppies, today CD-R, tomorrow who knows?).

Rule #6: Keep a PC that is capable of running those old CAD programs should
you need to resort to one. This is easy now since the PC is still king, but
when the X86 architecture is left behind, you're going to need that old
 dinosaur PC.

This week I am going through my old designs (some of which date back to
1989) and bringing them forward. It would be much more difficult if I
didn't still have those old CAD programs. I tried that eCapture thing to
bring Orcad files forward to Orcad DSN format, but never could get it to
work. It was easier to use SDT3 itself to make SRC libs to import into
Protel v3.X. Then I saved it in Protel 3.X format and imported it into
Protel 99SE. Some cleanup was required, but the results were pretty good.
 Why did Protel not put the ability to import Orcad SDT3 schematics in 99SE;
 it was in 3.X?

Every gizmo you ever design will be a legacy item some day. So, keep all
your Protel versions! And other CAD program versions!

The reason I ask is that we have files in version 8.x from 6 years ago.
  When I investigated
converting these to Protel it didn't appear possible. Cadence themselves
  could only bring
our old version files into their latest version be iterating through every
  version of software they
produced since version 8, one at a time, all separate installations.
  Needless to say that also
required a great deal of sucking up and money to accomplish.

We now have a contractor manually convert any old files we need to rework,
  depending
upon the level of changes. Other than that all the legacy files are kept
 in
  CAM350 as
Gerbers. We did keep the netlists which makes the checking easier when
  redrawing the
  schematics into Protel.

To summarise, from our investigations, apart from the converter you
 mention
  below, I am
not aware of any other solutions. Version 2.8 of Protel is the only
 version
  RSI seem to

Not wanting to push any particular product, but my boss has asked me to look
 into using Relex (www.relexsoftware.com).

It appears to have a CAD interface wizard which is what interests me,
however I haven't actually put it thru it's paces yet (to weed out the
marketing fluff) so I can't comment on that. Unless you order the CD,
it's a ~22MB download, so put the jug on. Good luck.

[PEDA] [PROTEL EDA USERS]: Annotating Schematic

2001-05-07 Thread Andrew W. Riley III

Hello all,

I have a one-page schematic that I created mostly by block copying parts of other 99SE
schematics. Some of the reference designators are duplicates, others are new with
question marks and so-forth. I have tried to reset designators and then annotate, and
I also tried to annotate all. All that happens is that I get a blank report file and
none of the designators have changed.
If I export the schematic and the library that I created into 98 schematic, the above
annotate functions work fine, I then import the schematic back to 99SE and all is well.
Is there something that I am doing wrong in 99SE?
The above is both with SP5 and SP6.

Mr. Lomax,

Yes, it is reproducible. The reset option has no effect.
I have tried every option available to me even though it is only one sheet.

Re: [PEDA] [PROTEL EDA USERS]: having W2k installed, can I run...

2001-05-07 Thread Andrew W. Riley III

I have been trying to send this for over four hours. Please accept my apologies if it
gets duplicated as our ISP seems to think [EMAIL PROTECTED] does not
exist.

Robi,

 Will W2k tolerate modem-sharing?

Yes. ICS is included with W2K, though I recommend and use a hardware solution
instead. Also, I upgraded to DSL shortly after I bought W2k

Will W2k tolerate dual screen-setup with totally independed
 screen-settings?

Yes. At home I use NVidia's GeForce2 MX (a dual-port w/TV-out) running a 20 Silicon
Graphics @ 1152x864 and a 15 Magitronics @ 800x600, both at High Color (16-bit)...
checking e-mail while watching a route is great eye-candy for me.

 Will W2k tolerate a DOS-Shell?

Not nearly as easy to answer as the first two. I would rather you pull my finger
nails out. If a program can be run from the 'Command Prompt',.. I have no problems
running a DOS-based MTBF program, however I never got PCAD 5.0 or 7.0 to run w/W2k.
With a batch file to switch between the different settings and a second (much older -
remember when they had a switch on the bottom?) mouse, I was able to run 7.0 from
within '98 and 5.0 in '98's MS_DOS Mode. I have an extreme hatred of P-CAD, based on
the two versions I have used, so I do not really care to put more of an effort to
getting it to run on any of my machines.

Now, I know that last one didn't help,
Drew

Will this really work? All of the dual head video card sites
 I've checked
(Matrox and ATI) say that Win2K limits the 2nd display to the
 same resolution
and color depth as the primary monitor. They SPECIFICALLY say
 it's a Win2K
limitation and not a driver limitation. I am running a Matrox
 G400 MAX 32MB
 Dualhead card on a Viewsonic 21 (1600x1200 32bpp) and
 17(1280x1024 32bpp)
with Win98SE because of this. I would LOVE to switch to Win2K as
 my primary OS
if I don't have to give up dual monitor support.

Re: [PEDA] [PROTEL EDA USERS]: Eating Crow (was: having W2k installed, can I run...)

2001-05-07 Thread Andrew W. Riley III

Hello again,

The second port on my GeForce2 MX has decided to quit working. Two weekends ago I
re-moved my dual boot (W2K/WinME - upgraded from a single Win98 installation) option
by starting over (clean W2K install) with a bigger HD. And now I have no evidence to
back up what I said in my original post. I do not know if I screwed up the second
port, it had something to do with WinME/W2K drivers or all of the above.
It was my mistake in not verifying my video card's abilities before publishing it to
this thread.
I DO now know that it is extremely possible that I was talking out of my a... since I
can only find info that supports Andrew Jenkins' statement of W2K's limitations with
one GPU driving a dual-port card.
So (eating crow),.. I say 'nay', one cannot actually change the individual resolutions
of two monitors driven by a single, dual-pipeline chipset video card within Windows
2000. You, Andrew Jenkins, are most correct in your advise to Robbi Bittler.

I never saw my post here or at work even though Outlook has it in my 'sent' folder.

Andrew,

Regrettably, I think that's been the case for many of us. The list server (or
apparently its host systems) has been acting quite particular (though not apparently
selective in any identifiable way) about which messages get thru and which don't, to
the frustration of many, including myself.

Frankly, for me, it's gotten so bad that I don't know whether I should instigate or
respond to most anything anymore, because I am not sure that it will get sent to the
group, which group members will actually see it, or whether anything will actually
get resolved as a result of my efforts, to my benefit or anyone else's.

The thread to which which you and I are responding is just one example. In response
to an in-preparation-for-specification-of-a-new-computer-system query that Robbi
Bittler made, regarding independent screen resolution configuration for dual-monitors
using a single card solution w/in W2k, one respondent said authoritatively that it was
possible (Matrox G400 dual-pipeline, single chipset), and two (myself included)
responded that it was essentially not possible using most comnbinatorial video
solutions. For all intents and purposes, the thread was simply dropped, at least from
both of my locations, as I received no further mail on the subject at either until
today.

I mean, what's the point of explaining or detailing some process, asking a question,
or answering same, only to have it vanish into nether-space? I don't know about the
rest you, but I need some sort of acknowledgement (agreement, disagreement,
explanation, counter-query, simple nod, flip-o-dee-bird, etc...anything but routine
dead silence) so that I can confirm that I'm not just speaking to myself and the void.
Otherwise, what's the point to having these groups? I don't think that it's meant to
provide a forum for hearing ourselves speak, or if it is, then it should be torn
down, as a mirror costs a great deal less, and at least provides near real-time
response...

BTW, assuming that you actually see this message, (toss of a coin?), and since the
thread (Dual-head limitations) was left dangling...What IS the outcome, yay or nay?
Can one actually change the individual resolutions of two monitors driven by a
single, dual-pipeline chipset video card within Windows 2000, or was it actually
incorrect advise to Robbi Bittler, ie, are the published limitations accurate?

Original participants speak?

regards,

aj

Re: [PEDA] [PROTEL EDA USERS]: Eating Crow (was: having W2k installed, can I run...)

2001-05-07 Thread Andrew W. Riley III

Hello,

I hope you understand, Andrew Riley, my purpose was not to
 challenge you to
a duel of whit, but simply to correct or stand corrected. We had
definitely not reached the point where any flaming was taking place, nor
did I expect that to be the case.

Andrew, I do realize and understand your point. My only intention was to publish the
fact that I stand corrected. And, I could not accept your duel as I am currently
unarmed,..g On a serious note, I realize the impersonal nature of e-mail and that
its intentions are, more often than not, (mis)interpreted - I did not mean to seem
defensive/challenged. In other words, No harm - no foul.

Anyway, on to your B B Q;
It's the list server I have issues with, because I can no longer be sure
that threads are being maintained, or whether their content is only
reaching a portion of the list...
On to bigger and better questions. Intel or other chipset? if not intel
chipset, then make sure you have all of the most up-to-date
 chipset patches
installed, as well as the companion MX drivers (must be the correct
pairing), as the MX cards are more than finicky with non-intel chipsets.
Via? (I've read a lot of blank-secondary!!! type messages in which the
user has a motherboard using the Via chipset. Known prob, known solution.

I believe this may be a problem in my configuration. I will have to check this when I
get home - I do have a VIA chipset. I have recently installed the new MB (chipset?)
drivers using Windows Update. First time ever there was actually something in the
drivers section. I do not really know how current the updates are. Would these be
the chipset patches that you referred to? Also, I do not have updated MX drivers.
I did not know there were updated MX drivers because I have not found them but then
again I have not looked very hard.

Thank you, for your help.
Drew - always here, not always there...

[PEDA] [PROTEL EDA USERS]: Archive Request

2001-05-07 Thread Andrew W. Riley III

Hello,

Would someone be so kind as to e-mail or post to the Yahoo Groups their current
archive from this List Server in Eudora, Outlook or Outlook Express format?
I lost my year 2000 (since August, I think) and January - 2001 archive due to a
check-box I missed in setting up my computer two weeks ago.
I currently use Outlook as my e-mail reader and downloaded Ian Wilson's Eudora
Archive. After a few tries I was able to get Outlook to read the files. The key was
in Ian Wilson's readme file. I had to create a file called DESCMAP.PCE with one line
containing Protel,Protel.mbx,M,U (without the quotes) and keep it in the same
directory as the MBX and TOC file. Outlook then had no problems importing the archive.

I now have from the beginning of May 2000 through the 10th or 11th of August 2000.
So, if someone would fill in any blanks, I would greatly appreciate it.

Your servant,
 r w
