Discuss with your husband and doctors having a Medi-port put in his chest. I've had one since 1998 and it's great. Less risk of clots, easier access for IV's and not hard to flush and heplock. Re: [QUAD-L] Blood Clots - Picc line vs port
In 1998 '99 I was having a lot of trouble with my legs. I ended up having both amputated in 2000 due to Osteomyelitis, Osteoporosis, muscle atrophy and cellulitis. I was also having frequent UTI's and had no veins left for IV access. The medi-port was a great solution for me. It has to be flushed and heplocked once per month to keep it free from clots. You should've started earlier, Joan. LOL I started this journey 41 years ago. I'm now 59. I come from long-lived people. I Am looking forward to some of the things that live in the future-new grandchildren and great grandchildren, watching the others grow up and tackle life as best they can, finishing my garden (probably not), enjoying the greenhouse and fresh tomatoes in winter, staying involved in youth activities (I love to see how children get comfortable with me in the wheelchair and only think of me as a lady who uses a wheelchair to get around rather than a disabled person), maybe writing a book-don't know who would read it but I might enjoy writing it-, helping friends and family landscape their houses-I get the fun part, designing it, they get the fun part of doing it-continue taking a couple of college courses that interest me. OK, I guess I get it. My list as much longer for things I want to do than it is for things I'm afraid of. Heft To: QUAD LIST Sent: Friday, January 18, 2008 7:00 PM Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Re: Our Relationship With Others Hi Billy. Bill of Il.here. I share your sentiments and emotions. I too, lived my life as you do, dead from the neck on down, but my brain never quit working. Unfortunately, as you say, some insinuate that we must be as equality retarded as we are handicapped. I understand that blind people often experience something similar to this same event. Seems that when individuals learned the person was blind, they immediately began talking much louder and had to be told, Hey, this person is blind, not deaf. Example. At one point, when I was 60 years old, I was told that I had only 24 hours to live, and that there was no hope for me because the tumor had crushed my spinal cord to the thickness of a ribbon. Those were the words of my neurosurgeon, a great and wonderful doctor. After surviving the removal of the tumor, I was told that I was lucky to be alive, but that I would live as a vegetable for the remaining time that I remained alive. I spent months lying in bed, not being able to turn over or to even feed myself. I remember lying in bed, doing the only thing I could do on my own, and that was to watch life go by. When I tired of that, I would yell and someone would turn me away from the window. The longer I lay there, the more determined I became to make an effort to change my situation, if only in the slightest way. So slowly I began to fight back against this thing that tries to destroy us. I remember the first time I tried to sit up. Someone had to hold me in a sitting position or else I would fall off the bed. It took several months, but I finally reached the point where I was able to sit up unaided. What a great feeling it was to experience that feeling of freedom. We have all been robbed of our lives and dreams and aspirations by an enemy we never knew. We didn't ask for this life, so why should I give this enemy every last once of victory. Every time I learn to do something that was taken from me, I win back an once of freedom. I take back what has been taken from me. Like Billy stated, I am not brain dead, and I have an awful lot of time to think as long as I am sitting there, so I began to outsmart the enemy and figure out ways to succeed in the simple tasks. One day after a lot of work I actually buttoned one button on my shirt. Yes, in a matter of seconds my PC person could have done it, but that person (as wonderful as they are) will never experience the sweet feeling of that success. I never, never belittled anyone for trying to help us. These were embellishment written by someone else writing on the list. The analogy was given about an elderly lady crossing a street. Should we sit idly by and watch her struggle, or should we run up to her and announce that we are going to help her cross the street. We do neither. We first approach and ask her or him if they would like any help. This satisfy's the human urge to help those in need, but remember, we can only respond to the elderly lady's response. If she says why yes, thank you, we then her. but if she says, no thank you, I want to attempt this crossing on my own, we can only capitulate and watch her cross the street. No one is demeaning those who are care givers, but if any of you were to come up to me and ask me if you could do assist me with somethingBill o I was trying to do, I would simply tell you not at the moment, thank you, I want to fail first. Today, as I write, after 6 years of trying, I can walk a little bit on my own, even though I was told that I would never be able to walk unassisted. I am not through declaring war on the enemy, and will continue to do so until the last hour before I die, which time is always near. When I do check out, I plan to do so with a smile on my face, because I gave that enemy(whoever that might be) the best fight I was able to bring to the battlefield, given the condition I am in. Re: [QUAD-L] What Keeps Us Entertained
We had a UHF station in Detroit (ch. 50) that we were able to receive starting about 1961. There was a guy named Bill Kennedy that hosted a show that played nothing but classic movies. Kennedy's claim to fame was playing the executioner in the film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He had only 1 line in the movie where he was lighting the fire to burn Qusimoto's love at the stake. It was Hand me another faggot. A faggots was a bundle of sticks tied together. Not a derogatory term for a gay person. As you can see, my answer is Yes. I love classic films. I guess the reason for this is that I grew up in the era and genre. So it was with great pleasure that I found a good Bogart movie last night that I had never seen before. It was entitled,'Marked Women' co-staring Betty Davis and was a 1937 production. As Bogart starred in mostly B movies in his early career, it wasn't a bad production. It was also quite evident that Bogart had not reached his potential yet. I am curious to know if by chance there are any other fans of classic moves here. Those of us who share the love of the black and white cinemas talk by the hours about the likes and dislikes of the classics and sharing bits of trivia. For example, the Bogart movie 'Casablanca has been rated as the most Romanic movie in the history of US films. Another circa favorite of the black white films are the Bowery Boys, produced from the late 30's up through the 1950s. These films have developed a cult following and produced such loveable characters as Slip, Sach, Chuck, Whity and Louie, the sweet shop owner. Anyone on the list old enough to remember these films? Some of these films were entitles 'Hell's Kitchen, Angles With Dirty Faces and The East Side Kids'. Much thanks goes to Ted Turner for airing the TCM television network which airs these classics 24/7 commercial free. Perhaps I might just invoke interest in this subject or even the associated field of literature, but then on the other hand this subject might be perceived as the ranting of an old man. Bill of Il.

Re: [QUAD-L] better today
Alan, How long (if ever) did you push a manual chair? I have arthritis in my shoulders from over 17 years in a manual. I developed bone spurs in one shoulder and had rotator cuff surgery. The shooulder problems caused chest muscle pain because I used them to compensate for weaker shoulder muscles. I don't know if that's your problem, but think about it. Right arm still has some numbness and weakness, but that's been standard for a while, and it's not nearly as bad as the past two days.) Yesterday was really scary - the arms were extremely painful, and I could barely move them, and it got more difficult as the day went on. I really feared I'd wake up today with no arm use at all. I went to bed at 7:00, because I couldn't really type any more, and could barely control my chair - unless I'm sick or the catheter blows, I never go to bed before I go in for the night at 10:00, no matter how bad pains are. To explain the difference between yesterday and normal, when I'm in bed, I do movements of my arms in sets of 20 (that's sets, plural, for some moves, like rotator cuff.) Yesterday, I tried to do them after I lay down. By the fifth move, I had to stop - I couldn't do them. Today, I got full sets done, and into second sets, and I'm pretty much having only the usual difficulties using my arms - upper back pain, poor balance and posture, and popping scapulas. What could cause this? Deficiency in some vitamin or mineral involved in nerve conduction or muscle movement? The inner arm pains definitely felt like the central pain - the skin and muscles pulled when I moved, and all the sensations felt like the rest of my body. They came on so fast! I'm not taking any new meds, and I am eating (not much, but that's normal for me, and I have my Boost Plus and multivitamin daily.) I don't think effects of a syrinx would come on that fast, and I doubt they'd get better by themselves. Anyhoo, I'm much better physically and emotionally today. Re: [QUAD-L] to all in wheelchairs
I hate to contradict you, Wheel, but any licensed physician can write the prescription if the OT or PT writes the letter of evaluation and medical necessity well enough. I got my letter from an OT in Feb. '07, my prescription from my doctor's PA in Mar. '07 and my chair was delivered April 13, '07. IMO the DME provider makes all the difference by double-checking everything; making sure every i is dotted, every t is crossed and everything is coded properly. I chose the Quantum 600 and it's been great. I liked the center wheel drive because both my legs are anputated above-the-knee making my weight/balance cause a rear-wheel drive tip easily. It also had the best options for me: Roho high-profile Quatro cushion, tilt, recline, etc. Bill C6 Incomplete since 7/20/68 Age 57 Leesburg, FL Red ship crashes into blue ship - sailors marooned. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ; quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Saturday, October 27, 2007 1:46 PM Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] to all in wheelchairs You will learn in time that obtaining a new chair these days is a lot more difficult today than it was just 5 years ago. Especially if CMS is paying for that chair. First, is the order from a licensed doctor in rehab medicine, to see an Occupational Therapist for a complete evaluation based on medical needs. The evaluation goes back to the doctor for another order to the DME. The DME will then determine what is best for you, with your help and assistance and submit those findings to Gov Insurance to determine if they will be paid for the perfect chair. Sometimes they get a yes and other times they get a no. Submittals have to be adjusted and justifications have to be properly coded and submitted. The process could take 6 months to a year. Maybe longer. Sometimes shorter. Ask around and evaluate each answer, based on its user and needs. Best Wishes In a message dated 10/27/2007 12:29:24 P.M. But it seems like you have not had very good luck with competent doctors. Neither have I but I finally found out that the culprit were those very big, big bladder stones that had been sitting in growing in my bladder for years and kept growing. Anyway, you said that you have had a bad UTI for a month now! If it is bad then I must assume it has gone systemic and you have been running a fever with severe chills for a whole month? Something does not sound right. Not to mention being extremely dangerous!!! In other words... what the F***? have you or the doctors than waiting on/for? After a whole month... you just got urine culture results today which only take three days (on the outside)? Just before, and after, having my bladder stones removed a year ago this past May... the bug that came after me twice in 2 months was Pseudomonas. It is one of the worst ones and both times I had to be treated with IV antibiotics via a PICC line at home. Again, you and I have discussed these ongoing UTIs both on list and off list. There must be some source, or culprit, causing your chronic infections. Mine was bladder stones but it has to be a process of elimination kind of deal. And only you know your body best! You already know that I have had repeated serious UTIs such as Pseudomonas. Yes, it is very depressing not to mention life-threatening. And going through an entire month ... how in the world did you let it go that long if it WAS so BAD? My fevers that bad really quick and I thought I would die before ibuprofen in some sort of antibiotic began kicking in. Then finding out that Pseudomonas has been growing in there the whole time? I would began to think that your urologist OR even your regular physician... sits around reading comic books rather than trying to help you! As far as how many times one can use the IV drugs before the bug gets resistant to them it is really academic if you NEED them anyway. My greatest fear with all my troubles ALSO was the fear that the bugs were growing more and more resistant. After all... when you have to resort to IV antibiotics... that is scary enough! There is nothing left to resort to. This is what leads me to think that your position does not give a rat's ass about your well-being. How you describe it... this is dead serious and something not to just brush off again and again. Also, like I have told you so many times... you might need to travel to get a better urologist and one really cares about your well-being! September 14 th will be my 54th birthday. My evening aide that usually makes my evening meal is taking my mother and myself out for dinner. Last night I was able to go to my sisters first gig after three years and the first time I had ever gotten to see her perform. It was quite exciting, Lori sings indie pop and I will put pictures on my space and the SCI list. It will take me a few days. I think you can click on Lori Wray under my space friends and possibly hear some of her music. I know Mark's daughter also sings. It is a part time job for Lori on the side, she has a full-time job full-time.. Join me at MySpace.com! Some might say I lost the battle but as we all know we're still fighting it every day. I'm not going to dwell on this day I'm taking my son out for his birthday later and enjoy life and the fact that I'm still here with him! On another note my anniversary falls on a dark day for my country and my heart goes out to the families of the TWC victims, no matter how bad we have it sometimes it could always be worse! Dave, I had to quit driving after my legs were amputated. Both hips have been disarticulated, too. It sure changes your sitting balance, doesn't it?
